' src=

Do you want to take a day trip from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres? You’ve come to the right guide!

Just 20 minutes off the coast of Cancun, Isla Mujeres is a tiny island known for its incredibly turquoise water and picturesque white sand beaches.

I’m a travel blogger that lives in Playa del Carmen , and it’s one of my favorite places for a quick beach escape and makes for an unforgettable day trip if you’re staying in Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya.

But at 1.5 hours away from Playa del Carmen, it can be a bit of a trek to get there on your own. That’s where I’m here to help!

In this post, I’m detailing everything you need to know to take a day trip to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen , including how to get there, top things to do, tips for visiting, and more.

Read on to find out how to visit Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen!

Isla Mujeres Playa Norte Beach

Why visit Isla Mujeres?

Although it’s somewhat of a trek to get to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen, it is definitely worth it!

The beaches on Isla Mujeres are far superior to the beaches in Playa del Carmen and it’s a fun excursion to explore another part of Mexico.

The best thing about Isla Mujeres is that the beaches almost never get hit with the amount of seaweed that can sometimes be found on many other beaches in Riviera Maya.

Basically, if you’re looking to beat the seaweed in Playa del Carmen , Isla Mujeres is where you want to go!

Plus, Isla Mujeres is very safe , quiet, and laid back, making it the perfect place for a quick beach escape.

It’s best to start the day early and then you can spend a full day relaxing on the beach or exploring the island.

Isla Mujeres Playa Norte

About Isla Mujeres

Meaning “Island of Women,” Isla Mujeres was named by the Spanish when they first arrived to the island.

After arriving, the Spaniards found many images of goddesses dating back to the time when the island was sacred to the Mayan goddess of childbirth and medicine.

Nowadays, the island is much more commercial but Isla Mujeres is still worth visiting and a nice escape from mainland Mexico.

At less than 5 miles long, it still offers plenty of restaurants, shopping, and beautiful Isla Mujeres hotels lining the beachfront.

The prettiest beaches on Isla Mujeres can be found on the north side of the island, most notably Playa Norte , where you will find the most stunning turquoise water and white sand beaches.

It definitely makes for a jaw-dropping first impression!

Isla Mujeres Beach

Where is Isla Mujeres?

Isla Mujeres is a small island in the Mexican Caribbean located just to the east of Cancun, Mexico.

The island can be reached easily by just a 20-minute ferry or boat to Isla Mujeres from the mainland.

Visiting Isla Mujeres is one of the best things to do in Cancun and can still be reached easily while visiting Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen

Getting to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen can be a bit of a trek but trust me it is worth it!

First, you have to travel from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, then take the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.  In total, the trip from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres takes about 1.5 hours.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of multiple forms of public transportation, the easiest way to get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres is by booking a tour.

These tours to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen include round-trip transportation with hotel pickup, saving you the hassle of getting there on your own.

Otherwise, to get to Cancun you’ll have to drive yourself, hire a taxi, or take public transportation to the ferry terminal.

Isla Mujeres Ferry Location

The ferry to Isla Mujeres is located in Cancun at Puerto Juarez and the name of the ferry operator is called Ultramar.

There are a few other ferry locations in Cancun (like the new Xcaret Xailing ) but Ultramar is the most popular option for tourists if you’re coming from Playa del Carmen.

Getting to Cancun

To get from Playa del Carmen to the ferry terminal in Cancun, you can either drive, take a taxi, or take public transportation:

The easiest way to get to the ferry in Cancun is by driving or renting a car from Playa del Carmen .

Navigate to the Puerto Juarez Ultramar Ferry terminal, and once you arrive, there is a parking garage on-site.

Additionally, you can choose to park in a less expensive lot nearby for around $100 pesos (~$5 USD).

👉 For a hassle-free experience, book your car through my favorite rental service Discover Cars by clicking here !

If you don’t have your own car, the easiest and most convenient way to get to the ferry terminal in Cancun from Playa del Carmen is to take a taxi.

The drive will be about 1 hour and may cost around $1000 pesos each way (~$50 USD).

As taxis are quite a bit more expensive, this is a better option for groups that can split the cost.

Playa del Carmen Taxi

By Public Transportation

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can also take the  ADO Bus  or the  Playa Express  van service to Cancun.

Both drop you off at the ADO station in Cancun so you’ll then need to take a 10-minute taxi ride to the ferry terminal.

ADO Bus from Playa del Carmen to Cancun

The ADO Bus from Playa del Carmen to Cancun is a large charter-style bus that has several departures each day and costs around $104 MXN (~$5 USD) each way.

The bus leaves from either the “ ADO Playa del Carmen Turistica Station ” (on 5th Avenue) or the “ ADO Playa del Carmen Alterna Station ” in downtown Playa del Carmen and the final destination is the ADO bus station in Cancun.

From there, you’ll need to take a taxi to the Ultramar ferry terminal, which takes about 10 minutes and should cost around $200 pesos (~$10 USD).

ADO tickets can be booked on the ADO website (Spanish only), on BusBud (English), or directly at the ADO station.

Just make sure to purchase your tickets to downtown Cancun and not the Cancun Airport.

👉 Book ADO tickets from Playa del Carmen to Cancun on Busbud by clicking here !

ADO Bus Playa del Carmen to Cancun

Playa Express from Playa del Carmen to Cancun

Alternatively, the Playa Express is a large Mercedes Sprinter-style van service that is a bit cheaper than the ADO bus and runs more frequently.

You can get on the Playa Express in downtown Playa del Carmen at Avenida Juarez just on the other side of main highway 307 (📍 Google Maps location ).

You’ll take the Playa Express all the way to the last stop in Cancun, which will be the main ADO bus station.

The cost should be around $50 pesos (~$2.50 USD) each way and you will pay upon exiting.

From there, you’ll need to take a taxi to the Ultramar ferry terminal, which takes about 10 minutes and should cost around $200 pesos (~$10 USD).

🧳 The Playa Express doesn’t have much luggage storage, so you’re better off taking the ADO if you are bringing any luggage with you to Isla Mujeres.

Playa Express Public Transportation

Isla Mujeres Ferry Price

Once you arrive to the Ultramar ferry terminal, you can purchase your ferry tickets to Isla Mujeres which costs $540 pesos (~$29 USD) for a round-trip ticket.

Cash or credit cards are accepted.  If you are a local Quintana Roo resident with a valid ID, the cost for the round-trip ferry is only $200 pesos.

Isla Mujeres Ferry Schedule

The Ultramar ferry schedule can be found here .  The ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres usually departs every 30 minutes and the last ferry coming back to Cancun departs at midnight.

Once you’re on the ferry, it only takes about 20 minutes to cross to Isla Mujeres.

Getting Around Isla Mujeres

It’s easy to get around Isla Mujeres by taking taxis, renting a golf car, or simply walking:

Once you arrive to the ferry terminal in Isla Mujeres, there will be a line of taxis waiting right outside to the left of the exit.

Taxis in Isla Mujeres are red in color and can be hired easily to get to other parts of the island.

Isla Mujeres Taxi

Another more popular transportation option on Isla Mujeres is golf carts.  Due to the small size of the island, it’s easier to get around on the narrower streets on golf carts.

Golf carts rentals in Isla Mujeres can be arranged from the ferry terminal to explore the island or for a fun ride over to the beach.

🚨 Do you need travel insurance for Mexico? Yes! Most insurance plans in your home country will not cover incidents abroad. I recommend using Travel Insurance Master, which is a handy travel insurance marketplace where you can compare policies. Get a FREE quote by clicking here !

Depending on where you’re going, it is possible to walk directly from the ferry terminal.

It’s about a 15 minute walk from the ferry to the Playa Norte beach and takes you on a nice stroll through downtown Isla Mujeres.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

Although it’s a tiny island, there are a ton of fun things to do in Isla Mujeres whether you’re looking for something more adventurous or just want to relax on the beach.

No matter what you do you’ll be treated to stunning views and the most crystalline turquoise water.

Isla Mujeres Playa Norte Beach

Visit a Beach Club on Playa Norte

Of all the beaches in Isla Mujeres, the most popular beach is Playa Norte , and visiting this beach is always my number one recommendation for day trips to Isla Mujeres.

It’s just too pretty to miss! Playa Norte can be reached from the ferry terminal by walking or grabbing a quick taxi.

Once you get to Playa Norte, you’ll see why it’s considered the best beach Isla Mujeres has to offer.

The beach is flat and widespread and there are several alluring beach clubs to choose from.

If you’re looking to relax, the northern end of Playa Norte is generally less crowded and less congested with beach umbrellas.

Isla Mujeres Beach Club

Below are a couple of Isla Mujeres beach clubs I would recommend:

Oceanvs Beach Club Isla Mujeres

Located on the northern end of Playa Norte, Oceanvs Beach Club is a popular Isla Mujeres beach club situated inside of the Casa del Jaguar Beach Hotel .

Oceanvs features comfortable full-sized beach beds and umbrellas which can be rented even if you’re not staying at the hotel. You’ll likely just have to pay a food and beverage minimum consumption fee.

The menu consists of your typical beach bar items including nachos, guacamole, tacos, pizzas, etc.

Beach Chairs at Casa del Jaguar Beach Hotel Isla Mujeres

Green Demon Beach Club

Another popular beach club on Isla Mujeres is Green Demon Beach Club .

With string lights, great music, and hexagon shaped beach beds, the atmosphere at Green Demon is very cool.

True to its name, the menu offers much healthier items like fresh fish, wraps, sandwiches, and salads.

They also offer wellness drinks and smoothies, but don’t worry you can still order beers and cocktails!

Green Demon Beach Club Isla Mujeres

Go on a Catamaran Tour

Another one of the best things to do is going on a catamaran sail or boat trip to Isla Mujeres.

These Isla Mujeres catamaran tours can be booked online in advance and often include snorkeling, lunch, and an open bar.

Some leave directly from Cancun and some even offer round trip transportation from Playa del Carmen.

I personally went on a catamaran trip to Isla Mujeres for a friend’s birthday celebration and it was a totally unforgettable experience!

Isla Mujeres Catamaran Tour

Go on a Snorkeling Tour

Isla Mujeres is also a great spot for snorkeling in the Riviera Maya and even has an underwater sculpture museum.

There are many Isla Mujeres snorkeling tours available and with the crystal clear water, you are sure to have some incredible underwater views.

The very first time I ever visited Isla Mujeres was on a snorkeling tour and it was super impressive!

And if you’re visiting during the months of May-September, you can also visit Isla Mujeres on a whale shark tour , when the whale sharks arrive annually to feed on the plankton-rich waters.

Go Shopping in Downtown Isla Mujeres

Another more laid-back option is to go shopping in downtown Isla Mujeres. There are several souvenir shops, restaurants, and snack bars in downtown Isla Mujeres.

Here you can pick up some Isla Mujeres souvenirs as well as your traditional Mexican handicrafts, similar to the 5th Avenue shopping in Playa del Carmen.

Downtown Isla Mujeres is also a great place to just sit, relax, and grab a drink.

Isla Mujeres Souvenirs

Visit Punta Sur

Punta Sur is the southernmost tip of the island and a less well-known tourist attraction.

It’s essentially a cliffside park that is home to one-of-a-kind sculptures, Mayan ruins, a lighthouse, and breathtaking ocean views.

With a small entrance, visitors can explore the park at leisure admiring the unique sculptures and taking in the sights.

It’s one of the best places to visit on Isla Mujeres and where you’ll find the best ocean views!

What to Bring on a Day Trip to Isla Mujeres

Below are a few items I would recommend bringing on an Isla Mujeres day trip.  You’ll definitely want to pack light so you don’t have too much to carry on the ferry.

If you’re going in the water, biodegradable sunscreen is definitely a must to protect the coral reefs. You can pick up my favorite brand on Amazon here .

Getting Back to Playa del Carmen from Isla Mujeres

Once you’re done with your adventures on Isla Mujeres, you can head back to the ferry terminal to return to Cancun.

Be sure to check the ferry schedule for departure times so you don’t miss the last ferry back.

If you are taking public transportation, the Playa Express and ADO bus run late into the night back to Playa del Carmen.

Isla Mujeres Playa Norte

Overnight Stay in Isla Mujeres

If you’re not up for the long trek back to Playa del Carmen or simply want to spend more time on the island, you can always consider booking an overnight stay at a hotel in Isla Mujeres.

This is a great option for a more relaxed experience plus you’ll have more time to really explore what Isla Mujeres has to offer.

Below are a few recommendations for hotels in Isla Mujeres on Playa Norte:

  • Casa del Jaguar Beach Hotel
  • Mia Reef Isla Mujeres
  • Lotus Beach Hotel

🇲🇽 Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

🏨 Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

🚗 Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

🚙 Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

🤿 Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

There are many different ways to get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres. While there isn’t a direct ferry between Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres, transportation is not overly complicated.

In this guide, I’ll discuss the best options from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres. So, no matter your schedule and preferences, you can easily hop over to the magical Caribbean island.

How to Get From Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres: Quick Guide

👉🏽 distance between playa del carmen and isla mujeres.

The distance between Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres is 84.7km (52.6 miles).

The distance from Playa del Carmen to the main Isla Mujeres ferry terminal (Puerto JuĂĄrez Maritime Terminal) to Isla Mujeres is 71.2km (44.2 miles).

Isla Mujeres is about 13km (8 miles) offshore from Cancun.

👉🏽 How Long Does it Take to Get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres?

The trip from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres should take between 1.5 hours – 2.5 hours.

Traveling from Playa del Carmen to the Cancun area takes approximately one hour, and the ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres takes about 30 minutes.

The total time may vary depending on how you travel from Playa del Carmen to the Cancun area.

For example, a colectivo from Playa del Carmen to Cancun may take much longer than a private transfer or taxi.

Best Ways to Get to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen

1. renting a car + ferry.

Renting a car and taking the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres is one of the easiest ways to get around because you have more independence and freedom.

When you rent a car, you can work on your schedule and not worry about the headache of coordinating transportation.

The main ferry terminals have parking available for the day or overnight.

It’s generally safe, but avoid leaving any valuables or belongings in your car when you leave it unattended for long periods.

If you’re driving from Playa del Carmen to the ferry terminal, I recommend driving to the Puerto Juárez Maritime Terminal (or Gran Puerto Cancun, right next to it).

There’s a large parking lot, and easy to get to.

You can pay around $45 USD a day for a car rental, plus about 300 MXN ($17.50 USD) per day for parking at the ferry terminal.

🚙 Car Rentals at Playa del Carmen

Are you wondering where to rent a car in Playa del Carmen ?

There are hundreds of car rental companies in Playa del Carmen. Some are excellent, while others are more “scammy”.

When renting a car in Playa del Carmen, one general rule of thumb is this: if it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t legitimate.

You’ll find a lot of car rental companies listing extremely low prices. Then, when you pick up the car, they’ll try to charge x500 more for “mandatory add-ons” like insurance.

One of the best tools for car rentals is DiscoverCars . You can check out different prices across town and compare them with one another.

Aerial view of Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres.

2. Private Transfer or Taxi + Ferry

Organizing a private transfer or taxi from Playa del Carmen to the ferry terminals is another easy way to travel.

You don’t have to worry about long travel times or the hassle of renting a car.

You can organize a private driver or taxi for the time you plan to leave and head straight there.

They won’t make additional stops, and you don’t have to worry about sharing your space with anyone else.

Private transfers or taxis from Playa del Carmen to the ferry terminal should cost 600 MXN ($41 USD) to 1,200 MXN ($70 USD), depending on the driver and services.

🚕 Uber from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres Ferry

I don’t recommend taking an Uber from Playa del Carmen to the Isla Mujeres ferry terminals.

Uber in Quintana Roo was approved for operation in January 2023. However, taxi drivers have revolted against Uber drivers.

If you find an Uber driver on the app in Playa del Carmen, it might not be the safest choice.

The lifeguard tower in Playa del Carmen.

3. ADO Bus (Cheapest Option) + Ferry

An ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to the ADO Bus Terminal in Cancun , followed by a quick 5-minute taxi to the ferry terminal, is the cheapest way to get there if you’re traveling in a small group.

ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) is a private bus company that offers transfers all over Mexico, particularly in the southern regions. It’s a very safe and affordable form of transportation.

The bus from Playa del Carmen to Cancun leaves frequently and is pretty fast.

The buses usually have a bathroom on board, comfortable seats with charging ports (but don’t rely on the charging ports to work all the time), and even a movie playing in Spanish.

Since the bus tickets are per person, it may be cheaper to travel by taxi, van, or private transfer if you have more than three people in your group.

But it’s the most affordable option for just you and another person.

The price of an ADO ticket from Playa del Carmen to downtown Cancun is 240 MXN ($14 USD), though sometimes you can get tickets on sale during “non-busy” departure times.

🚌 ADO Bus Schedule from Playa del Carmen

There are two ADO bus stations in Playa del Carmen; both have regular departures to downtown Cancun.

The most popular ADO bus station is ADO Terminal Turistica Playa del Carmen, located right on 5th Avenue, on the corner with Juarez.

This bus station is closest to all the action and more convenient to get to since it’s right downtown.

The second ADO bus station is ADO Alterna Terminal Playa del Carmen, on Avenue 20 and the corner of Calle 12. This one is only a few blocks back from Fifth Avenue.

When you purchase tickets, you know which bus terminal you depart from. The ticket should clearly say “Turistica Playa del Carmen” or “Alterna Terminal Playa del Carmen.”

Buses leave from both stations every 15-30 minutes, starting around 6:00 a.m. and going until around 1:00 a.m. So, it shouldn’t be a problem getting to downtown Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

You can purchase your ADO tickets through the ADO website , the ADO phone app, or directly at the bus station.

View of the white sand beach of Playa del Carmen.

4. Shared Van + Ferry

A shared van from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres ferry terminal in Cancun is another cost-effective and convenient travel method.

Shared vans are convenient because they’ll pick you up directly from your hotel or chosen location. And they’ll likely drop you off at the ferry terminal or very close to downtown Cancun.

One of the downsides to a van is it might take longer depending on how many other passengers are going and when you’re picked up.

For example, if the van has eight different passengers, and you’re the first to be picked up, you’ll have to ride in the van while the others are being picked up.

There are many tour agencies and shared van services around Playa del Carmen. A shared van should cost around 350 MXN ($20 USD).

5. Playa Express (Colectivo) + Ferry

The absolute cheapest way to get from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres is with the Playa Express (colectivo) and the Isla Mujeres ferry in Cancun.

However, it’s a bit more challenging to navigate.

The Playa Express is a public bus service that regularly operates between Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Vans leave every 10-15 minutes, regardless of whether it is full or not.

Playa Express begins on Highway 307, near Benito Juarex Avenida, Chedraui, and Mcdonald’s.

However, if it has space, you can hop on the colectivo/van at any point to Cancun. Simply head to the highway and flag it down.

Playa Express from Playa del Carmen to Cancun costs 55 MXN ($3.20 USD) and drops off at the ADO station in downtown Cancun.

You can take a quick taxi ride to Puerto Juarez Ferry Terminal to make the last leg to Isla Mujeres.

A bus in Isla Mujeres.

6. Tours + Ferry

If all of that is too complicated, the easiest thing you can do is hop on an Isla Mujeres tour from Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen is a tourist hotspot, so there are plenty of options for all those tourists. There are dozens of different tours to choose from.

Most tours organize roundtrip transportation to and from your hotel doorstep, meals, drinks, entrance fees, and other associated costs. This is by far the easiest way to visit Isla Mujeres.

It’s also a great way to meet people. Most tours have a small group of travelers, so you can easily make new companions if traveling alone.

If you’re traveling with your family or a group of friends, it makes the planning much more manageable.

It’s also great if you’re on a limited schedule. If you’re trying to squeeze in a lot of activities in a short time, a tour can help you fit it all in by having everything pre-planned and prepared.

The downside is you don’t get to plan your activities or work on your own time. Instead, you’ll likely be with a small group, going to the main tourist spots where all the tours go.

Here are three of the best Isla Mujeres tours from Playa del Carmen.

Isla Mujeres is split into two main parts: the north point and the south point.

The ferry from Cancun drops you off right in the center of North Isla Mujeres, where you can easily walk to many of the downtown hotels, restaurants, and the well-known Playa Norte.

Walking to anything you do on the island’s north side is straightforward. And most of what you’ll need regarding food and beach time is found on the north end, anyway.

However, if you want to venture to other parts of Isla Mujeres, like Punta Sur (the easternmost point in Mexico), you’ll need to find a more efficient mode of transportation.

✔︎ Golf Carts

Electric golf carts are the most popular way to zip around the island. The roads are narrow and windy, not exactly built for cars, but perfect for golf carts.

There are golf cart rental companies all over the north side of Isla Mujeres, so it’s pretty easy to find the perfect one.

The rentals cost around 1,200 MXN ($70 USD) for 24 hours, but prices may vary depending on the season and who you’re working with.

When you’re driving around, make sure to explore all parts of Isla Mujeres. There are many beautiful vistas on the other end of the island.

Just watch out for topes or speedbumps. They can pop out of nowhere, and the last thing you want is a damaged golf cart because of a speed bump.

The Moon Statue in Isla Mujeres on a clear sky.

✔︎ Motorbikes/Scooters

You can rent a motorbike or scooter if a golf cart isn’t your thing. These are little electric, automatic motorbikes that usually don’t exceed 65 km (40 mph).

Motorbikes are much more affordable than golf carts and usually cost around 300 MXN ($17 USD) per day.

While motorbikes are really fun to drive around, they’re also very dangerous.

There are multiple scooter accidents daily between Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, some of which are fatal. You have to drive very cautiously.

Hiring a taxi is the next best option if you don’t want to drive around.

There are many taxi drivers near Playa Norte and downtown Isla Mujeres, so it should be easy to snag one.

If you plan on taking a taxi to the other side of the island, you can look into hiring a driver for the day or a few hours, as there aren’t many taxi drivers without passengers.

Taxis around town usually cost around 50 MXN ($3 USD) to 100 MXN ($6 USD). Taxis from Playa Norte to Punta Sur cost about 150 MXN ($9 USD) each way.

Generally, a taxi driver charges around 300 MXN ($17 USD) per hour if you’d like to hire a driver for a few hours and save yourself the hassle of finding a new driver every time you get out of the cab.

Things to Do in Isla Mujeres

🏝 explore the beaches.

Isla Mujeres has earned international recognition for its beautiful beaches, so you have to make sure you spend some time exploring some of the best beaches on Isla Mujeres.

Playa Norte is the most notable beach on the island, actually earning a spot on Trip Advisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards of the best beaches in the world.

Playa Norte is characterized by its white sand beaches, calm turquoise waters, and many exciting beach activities. The water is pretty shallow and almost always warm.

You’ll find beach clubs, bars, and water sports activities lining the beach.

But Playa Norte isn’t the only beach in Isla Mujeres. If you have the time, venture out to other lesser-known sports for fun in the sun.

Here are some other beaches on Isla Mujeres:

🌊 Playa Centro (Central Beach) : The first beach visible from the ferry, located in downtown Isla Mujeres close to Playa Norte.

🌊 Playa Albatro (Albatro Beach) : On the west coast of Isla Mujeres, a smaller, less populated beach closer to the island’s south side. There’s a beach club here with a few umbrellas and hammocks.

🌊 Isla Contoy : An uninhabited island about 30 km (18 miles) off the coast of Isla Mujeres. You can visit on a day trip and relax on the practically untouched Caribbean Beach.

🏝 Book a Snorkeling Tour

5.0 ⭐️ 1,358 Reviews

Snorkeling is one of the best things to do in Isla Mujeres , so take some time to get out in the water.

Unfortunately, there isn’t the best snorkeling right offshore, so joining a snorkeling tour is highly recommended.

The Riviera Maya is located on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef behind the Great Barrier Reef.

This reef is full of fun marine life, including sea turtles, colorful fish, starfish, and other sea creatures.

Additionally, the underwater museum is right off the coast of Isla Mujeres.

The museum has over 500 lifesize structures and sculptures, including art pieces, sunken cars, and other unique items.

The underwater structures have become integrated into ocean life over time, as well.

This Isla Mujeres Snorkeling Tour Adventure is one of the best snorkeling tours on the island.

First, you’ll go to “Lighthouse Reef,” a shallow and fun snorkeling spot.

Next, you’ll visit the underwater museum. And finally, you’ll stop at the largest near Isla Mujeres, “Manchones.”

This Isla Mujeres Snorkeling tour also provides a delicious, fresh ceviche lunch, sandwiches, and beverages on board the boat.

Great trip! Everything was very well organised and the guides did a very good job – in English also! Recommended undoubtedly! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Georgios_P , Aug 2023

🏝 Scuba Diving at MUSA

If snorkeling just isn’t enough action for you, try scuba diving in the warm waters around Isla Mujeres. MUSA (the underwater museum) is the most popular dive shop here.

While you can see a lot of the museum snorkeling, you can see even more while scuba diving.

If you’re already scuba certified, this is an excellent two-tank dive to MUSA Underwater Museum and Manchones Reef .

You’ll follow your PADI-certified instructor and can choose between two dive times, depending on what works best for your schedule.

If you’re not scuba certified but up for an adventure, consider a PADI Discover Dive. This is a PADI-instructor lead guide following a brief course in the pool.

This is an excellent way to dip your toes into scuba diving in a safe and comfortable environment. If you’re still confident, check out this PADI Discover Dive to MUSA and the Manchones Reef .

🏝 Go on a Catamaran Tour

Another excellent way to enjoy the beautiful Caribbean Sea is on one of the incredible catamaran tours.

These boat tours generally include several snorkeling stops, an open bar buffet-style meals, and everything you might need for the day.

This is not only the best way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the Caribbean but also an excellent way to meet other travelers.

Usually, the groups are pretty small, and other like-minded travelers will be aboard (unless you book a private tour).

If you’d like your private tour from Isla Mujeres, check out this 4-hour Isla Mujeres Private Sunset Trip .

This trip includes a private catamaran for yourself and your family or friends and the use of snorkeling equipment, snacks, water, and beer.

If you’d like to hop on a beautiful catamaran cruise to Isla Mujeres from Cancun, check out this incredible Sailing Experience to Isla Mujeres in a Catamaran .

This is arguably one of the best ways to travel to Isla Mujeres. The tour includes entrance to a private beach club on Isla Mujeres, an open bar, and a buffet lunch.

🏝 Shopping at Downtown Isla Mujeres

If you want to spend more time on land, shop in downtown Isla Mujeres.

Ten or twenty years ago, the island was quiet, with only a large handful of shops and markets.

Recently, tourism has seen a boom, and shopping opportunities have exponentially expanded.

Nowadays, Isla Mujeres is such a fun place to shop. You’ll find practically anything here: island-style outfits, traditional Mexican souvenirs , high-quality tequila brands, handcrafted gifts, local chocolates, and more.

The end of Punta Sur.

🏝 Visit Punta Sur

Punta Sur is located on the southern tip of Isla Mujeres.

It’s an ecological park with a short boardwalk along the ocean, a lighthouse, a Sculpture Garden, and unbeatable views.

Punta Sur was once the home to an ancient temple honoring Mayan Goddess Ixchel, the Goddess of the Moon and wife of the Sun, and was considered a fertility goddess with life-changing healing powers.

Women traveled from mainland Mexico to Punta Sur, Isla Mujeres, for centuries to seek help.

Now, residents of Isla Mujeres gather at Punta Sur on New Year’s morning to greet the sun.

Punta Sur is the first place in all of Mexico to see the sun’s rays every morning, as it’s the easternmost spot in Mexico.

So, visiting Punta Sur, learning more about the history, and enjoying the beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea is a must-do while you’re on the island.

Where to Stay Overnight in Isla Mujeres

🛏 casa barco hotel boutique (budget).

Casa Barco Hotel Boutique is the best budget hotel, although it doesn’t feel like a budget hotel.

This cute boutique hotel is only 200 meters from Playa Norte and 600 meters from Isla Mujeres Beach.

It also features a small rooftop pool with a nice seating area, making it an excellent place to watch the sunset.

Everything, cannot fault anything. The AC was excellent, the wardrobe, balcony, bedroom, and views were exceptional. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stephanie , AUG 2023

🛏 Izla Hotel (Mid-range)

Izla Beach Front Hotel room.

Izla Hotel is the perfect mid-range accommodation with a large outdoor swimming pool, a private beach, a garden, and an onsite bar and restaurant.

The hotel is a bit further away from the center of Isla Mujeres, so it is not within walking distance of everything.

But with its private beach and endless amenities, you won’t need much while staying here.

Loved how it was a private beach and that it’s really away from the loud party. If you want to really unwind and relax, this is the perfect hotel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ GLORIA , SEPT 2023

🛏 Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets (Luxury)

Impression by Secrets Isla Mujeres room.

Impression by Secrets is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort toward the south end of Isla Mujeres.

The hotel is right on the beach, with incredible Caribbean Views. It also has a massive outdoor pool that overlooks the ocean, making it one of the most beautiful places in Isla Mujeres.

Guests can enjoy meals from the highly-rated onsite restaurant or spend the day sipping drinks at one of the two bars.

The Secrets all-inclusive experience is about as good as it gets.

It is a beautiful brand new resort and the butler service is amazing. The restaurant/bar staff are all so kind and helpful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ NICHOLAS , SEPT 2023

Getting Back to Playa del Carmen from Isla Mujeres

Getting back to Playa del Carmen from Isla Mujeres is just as simple as getting to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen.

You can head to the ferry terminal on the north end of Isla Mujeres, where you arrive on the island.

If you bought a roundtrip ticket to Isla Mujeres, head straight to the boarding line. If you still need your ticket, purchase your ferry ticket at one of the ticket counters.

The return ferry takes about 30 minutes from Isla Mujeres to Gran Puerto Terminal.

From here, you can either walk toward the main highway for a bus back to Playa del Carmen, take a taxi to Playa del Carmen, or take a taxi to the nearby ADO station in Cancun and an ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

The trip should take about two hours, depending on how you travel from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres

The best time to visit Isla Mujeres is typically from January to April when there is little to no rain, and the temperatures are not sweltering.

The rainiest months tend to be September and October, so you should avoid these months if you think rain will put a damper on your vacation.

That said, prices tend to be much more expensive during the high season, from January to April.

If you want the best deals, consider a trip during the rainy season or shoulder weeks (the beginning and end of the high season).

A Day Trip to Isla Mujeres, Mexico: Everything You Need to Know

A colorfull sign reading 'Isla Mujeres' on a sandy beach with the sea in the background

Welcome to this guide on visiting Isla Mujeres.

And although I’ll describe how to plan a perfect Isla Mujeres day trip , after reading what the island has to offer you might decide to stay longer than just a day!

Literally translated as “Island of Women”, this beautiful island is located just off the coast of CancĂşn in the Caribbean Sea.

Known for its great beaches and lively party scene, it is a great escape from the more touristy areas of CancĂşn and Playa del Carmen and is only a short ferry ride away.

In this article, we will explore the island, how to get there, what you can see and do, the best time to visit as well as some recommendations for a perfect day trip.

The easiest way to plan a day trip to Isla Mujeres is by booking a full-day catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres .

But, you can also take a ferry to the island to spend the day exploring everything Isla Mujeres has to offer.

And that; both how to get to Isla Mujeres and the best things to do on Isla Mujeres is what I want to share with you.

A Day Trip to Isla Mujeres

a day trip to Isla Mujeres

With the region of the Riviera Maya being quite large, many wonder what Isla de Mujeres offers and why you should travel here rather than elsewhere.

Why Travel to Isla Mujeres?

The island as a whole is a lot quieter than the bigger cities of CancĂşn and Playa del Carmen , which is why many come here for more peaceful vibes. However, the island still retains a nice ambiance and atmosphere.

There is a nice mix of both busy and secluded beaches, with the option of a lively night out . So after soaking up the sun, you can head to numerous bars and clubs that are open until the early morning hours.

One of my favorite bars on Isla Mujeres is Isla Brewing Company, which is an excellent option on the northern end of the island, with a great range of craft beers!

On the north side of the island, there are lots of beautiful beaches and some of the best waters for diving and snorkeling in the entire region.

And to add to that, Isla de Mujeres also happens to be one of the most popular places in Mexico to get your PADI scuba diving certificate . This is due to the cheap prices, numerous companies that are based here as well as the great visibility of the waters and exotic marine wildlife that you can observe.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres?

Ultramar ferry docked at Isla Mujeres

A visit to Isla Mujeres is a popular day trip from Cancun , but also from Playa del Carmen.

And getting to Isla Mujeres is easy.

You can get the ferry either from Puerto Juarez or from two locations in the Cancun hotel zone : Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. Puerto Juarez is the cheapest option and buying a round-trip ticket is slightly cheaper than buying two one-way tickets.

At all three locations the ferry is operated by Ultramar, which has a good website , in English, with timetables and prices. You can book online or go to the ferry terminal and buy your ticket there.

Alternatively, if you choose to take the ferry from Puerto Juarez, Jetway is another provider there with slightly lower prices than Ultramar.

If you are in Playa del Carmen (slightly more south than Cancun), then be aware that despite having a large port as well, they don’t actually offer ferries to Isla Mujeres . You’ll need to take a bus to CancĂşn and then take one of the ferries mentioned above.

Use the bus company called ADO — one of Mexico’s coach services. They run routes all over the country, are inexpensive and the buses are clean and modern.

Tip: if you are planning a day trip to Isla Mujeres, make sure you check the time of the last ferry back!

Things To Do on Isla Mujeres

In this part of the guide, we will look at some of the best things you can see and do when visiting Isla de Mujeres.

However, check out the “best time to visit Isla Mujeres” section below as well, as some of these may be impacted by the season.

1. Snorkeling and Diving

scuba diver getting ready for a dive

Isla Mujeres is one of the most popular places to learn to dive or to go diving as an already certified diver. Many travelers visit Isla Mujeres with the sole purpose of scuba diving the beautiful dive sites.

As well as some of the lowest prices, there are some really beautiful, crystal clear waters to explore on the north and western sides of the island.

Another great experience is swimming with whale sharks , and the best time to do so is between May and August. There are small tours that operate for you to go and see them, however, due to them being protected by the island, this means that only one or two people can swim with them at a time.

If you like to snorkel on your own from the beach, Isla Mujeres unfortunately is not the best place. Although they do have Garafon Reef (where you can also go kayaking and zip-lining by the way), the waves around the island can be high and rough. Then there’s North Beach which is perhaps the calmest spot on the island, but visibility is not great.

The best snorkeling around Isla Mujeres is done by boat. So if you’re mainly interested in snorkeling and spending the day on the water, then scroll down and read my recommendations for Isla Mujeres tours.

Tip: if you are only planning a one-day trip to Isla Mujeres and want to go diving or swim with whale sharks, I highly recommend booking that in advance. Do a Google search for dive centers on Isla Mujeres. Almost all of them offer diving, snorkeling, and swimming with whale sharks (during the season). Read some reviews and choose the one you feel most comfortable with.

2. The Underwater Museum

MUSA underwater sculptures

Another really cool thing to do on Isla Mujeres is visit MUSA (Museo subacuĂĄtico de Arte), which is a one-of-a-kind underwater museum located just off the coast of Isla de Mujeres!

There are over 500 life-size sculptures, spread out underwater between Isla Mujeres and Cancun.

Whilst you can’t visit independently, many dive centers offer trips here. And because the dive site is shallow, even if you’re not a certified scuba diver yet, you could, after some initial training, do a first dive here!

Do keep in mind that if you are not a certified diver, going diving here will take up most of your day. So if this is something you really want to do, you might want to change your day trip to Isla Mujeres into a multi-day trip.

And, although diving will give you the best experience, you can also snorkel here. Most sculptures are located in relatively shallow water, so you can easily see them while snorkeling above them.

3. The Beaches

one of the beaches on Isla Mujeres

The island has two main zones for beaches. You will find the best beaches for relaxing and swimming on the north end, with the best being Playa Norte (also known as Playa Cocos) where there are virtually no waves and plenty of space. However, this beach tends to attract more people.

The western side (which faces the busy hotel zone of CancĂşn) has many beaches where you can swim, and it has a nice range of amenities nearby. Two of the best beaches in this area are Playa Lancheros and Playa Indios.

The southern end of the island is more rugged, with a hilly landscape and shorelines, whilst the eastern side is wilder and is open sea until you hit Cuba (too dangerous to swim).

ruins of the Ixchel temple

On the southern tip of the island known as Punta Sur ( south point in English), you can visit the ruins of the Ixchel temple , which were dedicated to the goddess Ixchel herself.

Ixchel is known as the ancient Mayan goddess of medicine and midwifery, and many Mayan women used to make the pilgrimage to the island to honor her.

Nowadays, despite the ruins being mostly eroded due to hurricanes, you can still climb up the vantage point and get beautiful panoramic views of the island and sea .

5. Hiring a Golf Cart

driving around Isla Mujeres in a golf cart

Another fun thing to do on Isla Mujeres? Rent a golf cart and buzz around the island !

Renting one will cost you around $45 for the day, and this way you will be able to venture more off the beaten path, and get from the north to south ends of the island a lot quicker.

Regarding safety; there isn’t a lot of traffic on the island. You’ll find virtually no cars but instead just taxis, some buses, scooters, and other golf carts.

6. Shopping, Eating & Drinking

2 restaurants in Isla Mujeres

You’ll find the highest concentration of shops, bars and restaurants on the north side of Isla Mujeres.

This is also where the ferry arrives, which makes it easy to check out some shops and find a good place to eat, even if you are only visiting Isla Mujeres for one day.

You’ll find a lot of souvenir shops, jewelry stores, and a few liquor stores offering you tequila shots no matter what time of day you walk past.

But, there is also a great selection of restaurants. Whether you want some local tacos, a good pizza, or some healthy vegan food, you’ll find a restaurant for it.

The area becomes more lively around sunset with bars filling up and loud music coming from all angles. If you’re looking for a good night out, you can surely find it here!

Travel Tips for Visiting Isla de Mujeres

The best time to visit isla mujeres.

the best time to visit Isla Mujeres

For the most consistent, hot weather you will want to visit Isla de Mujeres between the months of January to April , where temperatures hover around 85°F (29°C).

If you are thinking of heading between June and October, then be aware that this time has an increased risk of wet weather due to hurricane seasons, where there is slightly more chance of an occurrence in September and October.

Overall, the best time to visit Isla Mujeres would be between November to early January. The weather is great this time of year and the high tourist season has yet to start, meaning generally lower prices for accommodation and travel.

If spotting whale sharks is on your to-do list , then the best time to visit is between the months of May and September.

And for those who are coming to Isla Mujeres to dive , you should know that the best diving conditions around Isla Mujeres are between December and April.

My Recommendations for Visiting Isla Mujeres

travel to Isla Mujeres

Regardless of whether you are a certified scuba diver or not, I think one of the main draws of visiting Isla de Mujeres is the unique underwater museum , where you can observe over 500 statues near the coral reef.

During your day trip to Isla Mujeres you should also head to Centro and check out some of the murals along the sea walls, which have been painted by artists from all over the world.

In terms of the best beaches, I would check out Playa Lancheros for an all-rounder with some waves and local bars and restaurants nearby, and also Playa Norte for calmer waters!

Last but not least, for those who want to see more nature, head to Isla Contoy , which is located some 30km north of Isla de Mujeres. The island is one of the best places in Mexico to see nesting turtles and sea birds. If you want to combine a day trip to Isla Mujeres with a visit to Isla Contoy the best option is to book a tour that combines both .

How to Get Around Isla Mujeres

Taxis are the easiest way to get around Isla Mujeres. They are everywhere and fairly inexpensive.

2. Rent a Golf Cart

As I mentioned before, golf carts are a popular way to get around. They might end up costing a bit more than taking taxis, but they are so much fun!

You can rent golf carts by the hour or for one or several days. There are several rental locations close to the ferry terminal and prices are the same at all locations.

3. Rent a Bicycle

The island is small enough to easily explore by bicycle.

Several places on Avenida Rueda Medina rent bicycles, but make sure you get one that’s in good shape.

Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

an Isla Mujeres tour by catamaran

As I said at the start of this article, the easiest way to plan a day trip to Isla Mujeres is by booking a tour.

Depending on what you want your Isla Mujeres day trip to look like, there are some pros and cons to booking an organized tour:

Pros of Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

  • Everything is organized for you
  • Most tours pick you up from your hotel
  • You get to spend time on a beautiful boat
  • You get to explore some of the best snorkeling spots
  • You can combine a visit to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy
  • Most tours offer snorkeling equipment, food, and an open bar

Cons of Booking an Isla Mujeres Tour

  • Your schedule is fixed
  • You have limited time to actually explore the island

Which Isla Mujeres Tour to Book

Depending on your interests, there are a few different Isla Mujeres Tours you can book:

  • A Full-Day Catamaran Tour On this tour you’ll spend most of the day sailing on a beautiful catamaran, taking you to different idyllic locations. You’ll be able to swim, snorkel, enjoy a delicious lunch, and a beautiful beach.
  • A Fun Catamaran Tour & Island Visit This fun double-decker catamaran takes you to a great snorkeling spot as well, but unlike the first option, it offers more time on Isla Mujeres to actually explore the island. Breakfast and lunch are served on the boat and you can enjoy unlimited drinks since they offer an open bar on board!
  • A Speedboat Tour to Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy This tour takes you snorkeling and lets you explore both Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. If you want to see as much as possible in one day, then this might be the perfect Isla Mujeres day trip for you.

The Perfect Isla Mujeres Day Trip

And that’s all from this guide on visiting Isla Mujeres!

Having read this article, you should now have a better idea about what there is to see and do on Isla Mujeres, how to get there from mainland Mexico, and the best time to visit.

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful, lively, and affordable destination. And although it’s a perfect day trip, it’s also definitely worth spending more than a day here.

If you do decide to stay longer, there’s a wide range of hotels, resorts, and rental apartments on the island. And, if you were ever thinking about trying scuba diving, definitely consider starting on Isla Mujeres!

And if you love Mexican Caribbean islands, Holbox Island, which is listed as one of the best Caribbean islands , is also worth checking out.

If you’re staying in Cancun and are looking for more things to do in the area, this is a list of Cancun’s best day trips .

Why visit Isla Mujeres?

While it may take some effort to travel from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres , it’s definitely worth it ! You can enjoy the beautiful beaches there, which are much better than those in Playa del Carmen. Moreover, exploring another part of Mexico makes for a fun excursion. What’s great about Isla Mujeres is that its beaches are not usually affected by seaweed , which is a common issue on other beaches in Riviera Maya.

If you want to go to a beach destination without seaweed , Isla Mujeres is the place to go! To make the most of your day, start early and enjoy a full day of relaxation on the beach or island exploration.

About Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, which means “Island of Women,” got its name from the Spanish when they landed there. The Spanish found numerous goddess images on the island that dated back to the time when it was a sacred place for the Mayan goddess of childbirth and medicine. Today, Isla Mujeres is more of a tourist destination, but it still offers a great escape from mainland Mexico. Although the island is less than 4.5 miles long , it boasts many restaurants, shops, and beautiful hotels and resorts.

How far is Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen?

A common question is how far Playa del Carmen is from Cancun and how far Cancun is from Isla Mujeres. The answer is that it’s about a one-hour drive from Playa del Carmen to Cancun and a ferry ride that takes less than 30 minutes from Cancun to Isla Mujeres . If your ground transportation and ferry schedules align perfectly, you could theoretically travel from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres in under two hours. However, it’s likely that you’ll have to wait a bit for your ferry, as I did. In my experience, the total travel time was just over two hours.

  • Best Catamaran Tours from Playa del Carmen

The two-step process

To get from the center Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres , you need to take a bus or shuttle to Cancun and then take a ferry to Isla Mujeres. Although carrying your luggage for an additional leg of transportation may seem like a hassle, most travelers find it worthwhile.

Traveling to Cancun

There are three ways to get from Playa del Carmen to Cancun’s ferry terminal: driving , taking a taxi, or taking public transportation.

If you’re heading to the ferry in Cancun, the most convenient options are to either drive or just rent a car from Playa del Carmen . Go to the Puerto Juarez Ultramar Ferry terminal and you’ll find a parking garage there. Alternatively, you can park in a cheaper lot nearby for around $100 pesos (~$5 USD).

Taking a taxi is the easiest way that to get from Playa del Carmen center to the ferry terminal in Cancun if you don’t have your own car. Its a 1 hour drive and may cost around $1000 pesos each way, which is approximately $50 USD . It would be a better option for groups to split the cost since taxis are more expensive.

By Public Transportation

If you’re on a tighter budget, the ADO Bus or Playa Express van service are both viable options to get to Cancun. Both will drop you off at the ADO station in Cancun, but you’ll still need to take a 10-minute taxi ride to get to the ferry terminal.

The ADO Bus provides large charter-style buses for travel between Playa del Carmen and Cancun. There are multiple departures every day and each one-way ticket costs approximately $104 MXN (~$5 USD). The bus can be boarded at either the “ADO Playa del Carmen Turistica Station” located on 5th Avenue or the Playa del Carmen Alterna ADO Station in downtown Playa del Carmen. The bus will arrive at the ADO bus station in Cancun as its final destination.

To get to the Ultramar ferry terminal, you’ll have to take a taxi. The taxi ride will take approximately 10 minutes and cost around $200 pesos (~$10 USD).

You can buy tickets from the  ADO website  (Spanish only).

Taking the ferry to Isla Mujeres

To have a great time on the Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres, it is crucial to choose the right port. There are four ports for passenger ferries from Cancun to Isla Mujeres and one for vehicles. I recommend the Puerto JuĂĄrez port for its proximity to the bus station, affordability, and more than twenty daily departures.

You can also take a ferry from three different ports in Cancun’s Hotel Zone – Playa Tortugas, Playa Caraco or El Embarcadero. Ultramar ferry ports to Isla Mujeres only have three or fewer departures per day depending on your situation.

Is there a ferry from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a direct transportation option from Cancun to Isla Mujeres. However, you can take the Cancun to Isla Mujeres ferry, which is a great experience. On the ferry, you can choose to either sit on the upper outdoor deck or in the air-conditioned ground-floor cabin with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Ferry Schedule

Traveling from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres through the Puerto JuĂĄrez port has an added advantage. Ultramar provides a flexible ticket policy for this route. As the ferries from Puerto JuĂĄrez to Isla Mujeres are scheduled every half to one hour, you can choose to board an earlier ferry if you are ahead of your planned schedule.

I was able to make my 3-hour and 15-minute trip to Isla Mujeres in just 2 hours and 15 minutes. It was great to experience the island’s vibe an hour earlier than expected. If you need to take an earlier or later ferry, you don’t need to purchase a new ticket. Just join the line and board the ferry.

Isla Mujeres Ferry Price

When you reach the Ultramar ferry terminal, you can buy a round-trip ticket to Isla Mujeres for $540 pesos (~$29 USD) . They accept cash and credit cards. However, if you’re a resident of Quintana Roo with an ID, you can get the round-trip ferry for only $200 pesos.

How to get around in Isla Mujeres

Easiest and most convinient way to get around in Isla Mujeres is by taking taxis, renting a golf car, or simply walking:

You can walk directly from the ferry terminal to Playa Norte beach , depending on your destination. The walk takes approximately 15 minutes and will take you through downtown Isla Mujeres, providing a pleasant stroll.

After you reach the ferry terminal in Isla Mujeres, you will notice a row of red taxis waiting to the left of the exit. These taxis are easily available to hire and can take you to all the areas of the island.

Golf carts are by far the most popular mode of transportation on Isla Mujeres because of the island’s small size, making it easier to maneuver through the narrow streets. You can rent golf carts at the ferry terminal and explore the island or for a fun ride to the beach.

Playa del Carmen vs. Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres has a quieter and smaller atmosphere compared to Playa del Carmen. The area is navigated through narrow roads where you will encounter some golf carts as you head towards the coast. The cost of living in Isla Mujeres is actually higher than Playa del Carmen, but you can still find some affordable dining options with a little effort.

The white sandy beaches of Isla Mujeres with their blue water are much better compared to Playa del Carmen. Though Playa del Carmen beaches are also nice, but Isla Mujeres beaches are simply incomparable .

The Beach hop

If you’re planning a trip to the YucatĂĄn, both Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres are unique locations worth visiting. Now that you know the route from Playa del Carmen to Isla Mujeres, all that’s left is to ensure your bathing suit is dry enough to pack. Actually, it might be easier to keep it on since the trip is short, and the inviting waters of Isla Mujeres will be waiting for you upon arrival.

Traveling to 🇲🇽 Mexico soon?

I recommend these travel resources for Mexico that I personally use:

🏨 Hotels : I have found that Expedia and Booking.com consistently have the best deals on hotels and resorts in Mexico. If you prefer to stay at a vacation rental, check VRBO that is usually cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

✈️ Flights : To find the best flight deals to Mexico, I always use Kayak . Remember to subscribe to their price alerts for the travel dates you want. Another great alternative for flight deals is Expedia .

🚗 Rental Cars : I always use and highly recommend Discover Cars because it allows me to compare several car rental companies and view ratings on various factors such as overall value, pick-up procedure, agent efficiency, car condition, and total time taken.

🚙 Cancun   Airport Transportation : For the fastest and easiest way to travel, I suggest arranging a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation . Honestly, no better way to travel from the airport to your hotel or resort.

🤿 Tours & Activities: For tours and activities in Mexico, I highly recommend using either Viator or GetYourGuide . These websites offer a full refund if you cancel your booking 24 hours before the start of the tour, and they also provide excellent customer service in case of any issues.

🚨 Travel Insurance: I always suggest purchasing travel insurance as a precaution before traveling, especially after a recent accident in a taxi in Mexico. For short trips, I recommend Travel Insurance Master , whereas for digital nomads, Safety Wing is a better option.

📷 Best Camera for your trip: I always carry with me a GoPro , It’s light, compact, takes great video and pictures, and most importantly, it’s waterproof ! You just can’t go wrong with one. If you are interested in higher quality video and photography, I always carry with me on my trips and highly recommend the Sony A7IV  which I think is the best travel DSLR Camera out there.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Remember to include a good sunscreen to protect yourself from the summer sun. I always use and suggest  Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is vegan, reef-friendly, and cruelty-free.

15 Best Day Trips from Playa del Carmen

Playa Del Carmen is a coastal town along the Riviera Maya in Mexico’s Quintana Roo state.

It is often chosen by visitors to the region who are looking to get away from the party atmosphere of CancĂşn.

The town is lined with a large beach facing the Caribbean Sea.

It is known for having a much more relaxed atmosphere than other towns in the area, boutique style accommodation and colonial architecture that give the town a very European feel.

If you are looking to get away from the town for a day trip, there are plenty of great options in the region, from natural parks and pools to Mayan ruins and cultural villages.

Here are the fifteen best day trips from Playa Del Carmen.

Tulum Ruins

Tulum is a beautiful coastal town a short drive away from Playa Del Carmen.

The beaches are vast and quiet, with a bohemian vibe adding to a relaxed atmosphere.

One of the most popular attractions in Tulum are the Mayan ruins of the old city.

These are located right next to the beach and can easily be explored on foot within a couple of hours.

After visiting the ruins, you can then head to Playa Maya for more beach relaxing, or to enjoy snorkeling and spotting the sea turtles native to the Caribbean Sea.

Recommended tour : Tulum Ruins Tour & Tankah Ecological Park from Riviera Maya

Coba

CobĂĄ is also home to some Mayan Ruins, though these are a little more impressive than others and feature the highest pyramid in Quintana Roo.

It is a good idea to come either as part of an organized tour or quite early in the morning if you are guiding yourself, as it can get quite busy after lunchtime.

After visiting the Mayan ruins, you can explore CobĂĄ village.

It is quite small but idyllic, and most tourists do not go into the village itself, so you can get a more authentic idea of local culture.

You can also spot crocodiles in the town lagoon – from a safe distance of course.

Available tour : Mayan Ruins of Coba: Full-Day Tour

3. Xel-HĂĄ Park

Xel-HĂĄ Park

Located on a small inlet on the Caribbean coast, Xel-HĂĄ park combines Mayan mythology with natural history in an adventure park that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Xel-HĂĄ focuses on sustainable tourism and incorporates environmentally friendly policies into all of their attractions.

You can visit a natural aquarium to enjoy native wildlife from the neighboring seas, and even snorkel and dive amongst the tropical fish and sea turtles.

Outside of the water, there are jungle trails and a nature train.

You can also enjoy one of their many restaurants.

Book online : Xel-HĂĄ Park All-Inclusive 1-Day Pass

4. Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres may seem like an idyllic hideaway on the surface, but it has an extensive and at times bloody history that you can learn about on your visit.

You can either drive to CancĂşn and take a ferry or join one of the catamaran tours that sail directly from Playa del Carmen.

On the island, you can relax on the beaches, learn about ancient Mayan history and pirate hideaways, or check out the hidden caves.

On the ferry to the island, you may also spot dolphins and sharks in the Caribbean waters.

Combo tour : Contoy and Mujeres Islands Tour with Transfer Options

5. Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya, Mexico

If you have a limited amount of time, you can visit a few of the areas on this list in a single day trip along the Riviera Maya.

Playa del Carmen is just one of the many towns and villages along the coast, and each place has its own special charm.

The region is known for the most beautiful beaches in Mexico and the villages are packed with local culture and craftsmanship.

The area is known for its natural beauty, with a neighboring forest to explore and plenty of opportunities to snorkel and dive if you want to check out the marine life.

There are both coach and boat tours of the region available, but even simply driving your own car can provide a unique day-trip.

Unique tour : Playa del Carmen 3-Hour Dune Buggy Tour and Cenote Swim

6. Contoy Island

Isla Contoy, Mexico

Contoy Island is a protected nature reserve close to Isla Mujeres.

You will need to book a tour to take the day trip there, as visits are limited to a handful of tour companies and only 200 visitors are allowed per day.

Whilst on the island, you can enjoy the native birdlife and learn about the conservation efforts taking place on Mexico’s islands.

Most boat trips on the way also stop at Ixlache Reef for you to snorkel and explore one of the most beautiful reefs in the Caribbean.

The island is also home to the region’s largest colony of sea turtles.

7. Sian Ka’an

Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka’an

Sian Ka’an is another sustainable tourism destination along the Riviera Maya.

It is designed to minimize en-masse tourism, so numbers are limited every day to give you a much more relaxing experience away from the main tourist traps.

A variety of activities are available, including birdwatching, snorkeling and exploring coastal wetlands.

You can take a boat tour down the Sian Ka’an canal and indulge in some fly fishing along the coastal areas.

If you prefer, you can arrange your own tours and only pay a simple entry fee, or you can get tailored tours depending on your interests and needs.

Amazing tour : Sian Kaan Boat Trip and Snorkel Adventure

8. ChichĂŠn ItzĂĄ

ChichĂŠn ItzĂĄ

The second-most visited archeological site in Mexico, ChichĂŠn ItzĂĄ is well known as one of the best-preserved Mayan ruins in the country, with a famous pyramid in the center.

The Kukulkan Pyramid was named one of the new seven wonders of the world in 2007 and draws millions of tourists per year.

This is one of the best places in Mexico to learn about ancient Mayan society and the impact the Spanish invasions had on these societies.

It is a bit further away from Playa del Carmen than other sites on this list but is easily reached as part of a day trip and well worth the traveling.

9. Punta Laguna

Monkey in Punta Laguna

If you like monkeys, Punta Laguna park is the trip for you.

Located around an hour and a half drive from Playa del Carmen, this nature reserve is a great place for you to safely interact with the native monkey population.

You also have the opportunity to swim in the lagoon located within the reserve and explore the vast forests the region is known for.

There are Mayan ceremony experiences and zip-lines through the park.

If you have your heart set on seeing the monkeys, it is advised to book with a tour guide, as they will know the best places for you to meet them.

Recommended tour : Punta Laguna and Coba Day Trip

10. Holbox Island

Isla Holbox, Mexico

Holbox Island is a small, inhabited islet off the coast of Quintana Roo.

There are no cars allowed on the island and tourism is limited, but you can visit yourself by flying from CancĂşn or as part of a guided tour.

Like all other islands in the region, it is lined with gorgeous beaches; however, it is also a sanctuary for flamingos and pelicans, as well as a host of other native wildlife.

It is a true off-the-beaten-path destination due to low tourism numbers, and you can experience the unique local culture in Holbox village with the local fish markets and day to day life.

Suggested tour : Holbox Island Tour with Transfer Options

11. Rio Secreto

RĂo Secreto

Rio Secreto is an underground river system with wide caves and clear waters.

You can only visit the rivers with a guide for safety reasons; however, you get to experience abseiling, river walks and caving whilst on tour.

The caves are filled with stalactites and the tour guides are knowledgeable about the local ecosystem.

Like many other places in the region, Rio Secreto is an ecological tourism destination and they pride themselves on providing sustainable, environmentally friendly tours.

The caves are also a great place to experience local wildlife.

Suggested tour : Rio Secreto Underground River Tour

CancĂşn

Probably the most famous city on the YucatĂĄn Peninsula, CancĂşn is famed for its nightlife, casinos and bustling beach life.

Away from the main tourist strip, however, there are more secluded and quiet spots for families and other tourists to explore.

There is an interactive aquarium to learn more about the marine life, and a Mayan museum if you are more interested in cultural activities.

For a slice of local life, you can visit the street markets and test out your haggling skills.

There is something for everyone in CancĂşn, so do not be put off by its party town reputation.

13. Cenotes

Gran Cenote, Tulum

Cenotes are natural sinkholes and pits that allow you to access ground waters.

You can swim in them, or simply check out the native flora and fauna that thrive alongside the pools.

The largest cenote – Gran Cenote – is in Tulum, and from here there is a trail along the Riviera Maya known as Ruta de los Cenotes.

If you are unsure about the safest cenotes to swim in, there are plenty of tours leaving directly from Playa del Carmen.

Nevertheless, for the more adventurous, you can find plenty of information online to compile your own tour.

Many of the best ones have trails allowing you easy access.

14. Valladolid

Valladolid, Mexico

A popular option for visitors to ChichĂŠn ItzĂĄ who are looking for a less touristy town to explore, Valladolid is quite a sleepy town where you can relax and take in the local culture.

The central plaza is filled with beautiful native plants and surrounded by colonial architecture.

You can visit the Museo de San Roque and check out the colonial and Mayan artifacts.

You can also visit markets that surround the central plaza to pick up some local handicrafts as souvenirs of your trip.

Modern art is also available at Yalat Boutique, where you are encouraged to browse at your leisure and purchase anything that catches your eye.

15. Cozumel

Isla Cozumel

Cozumel Island is only a short ferry ride away from Playa del Carmen and is a great day trip option if you do not want to spend a lot of time traveling to the destination itself.

Like others in the region, the main draw of this island is its beautiful beaches and snorkeling opportunities.

However, you can also opt to explore the main village on the island to enjoy the unique Caribbean culture experienced by locals.

There are smaller Mayan ruins dotted around the island, and even some great nightlife spots if you opt to stay the night.

When I reached the malecon that morning, I thought that the light was kind of eerie. My camera could not capture it.

The sun was about to rise upon another perfect day.

I attended Island Church with Sister Sue and friends Donna and Carol.

That afternoon I whiled away the time at Centro Beach with SIL Lorraine, Kelly and friends Kim, Brenda & Deenie. Lorraine and I had a lovely swim in the ocean. I had to head home to wash the salt off before dinner.

Thank you Kathryne for the continued trip reports. I love that your restaurant choices are places that are new to me. Your food musings and photos continue to delight. Thank you!

Thanks for the continued reports, Kathryne. I liked the heart shaped sandwiches at the end of the food musing one. :)

FYI - Pizza slices are now 95 pesos for the pan/Sicilian and US$2 for the thin NY cheese slice.

Is Holbox Worth Visiting in 2024? Travel Guide + Tips

Wondering if Holbox is worth visiting on your next trip to Mexico? You’re in the right place!

Isla Holbox is a small island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. While it isn’t the easiest place to get to, this tropical island is undoubtedly worth all the trouble.

As a travel blogger that lives in nearby Playa del Carmen , I’ve visited Isla Holbox several times and am here to let you in on what it’s really like.

In this post, I’ll discuss why Isla Holbox is worth visiting , the best things to do there, and who Holbox is most suited for.

I’ll also review important safety information, how to get to Holbox, and other travel tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Ready to find out everything you need to know about visiting Holbox Island? Let’s get going with this Isla Holbox travel guide!

Is Holbox Worth Visiting?

Yes, Holbox is definitely worth visiting! Without a doubt, it’s a beautiful tropical island with stunning beaches and is one of the best-kept secrets in Mexico.

When compared to other Mexican islands like Isla Mujeres or Cozumel , Holbox is more off-the-beaten-path, with its dirt roads, lack of cars, and small downtown area.

But travelers should be prepared to disconnect in Holbox, as the island is still largely undeveloped and lacks stable infrastructure and strong wifi.

However, this admittedly adds to the island’s charm, along with its laid-vibe and untouched tropical atmosphere.

And what I really love about Holbox is the gorgeous beaches with seemingly endless shallow waters–it honestly feels like a dream!

And even if you don’t want to spend your entire vacation under a palm tree on the beach, Holbox offers several other unique activities like bioluminescence tours , snorkeling with whale sharks , and kayaking excursions .

Is Holbox Safe to Visit?

Yes, Holbox is safe to visit . It’s a small island with a small population and few reported crimes.

I’ve always felt very safe walking around Holbox and have never felt uncomfortable–it’s quite the opposite.

Most people are extremely friendly, whether serving you a drink or walking by on the sandy street.

Holbox feels like a breath of fresh air after spending time in Playa del Carmen or Cancun. There are much fewer issues with cartels, and it feels like even fewer scams.

Holbox Travel Advisory

Officially, the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory for Holbox is currently listed as a “ Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution ”.

However, this travel advisory is for the entire state of Quintana Roo, which includes nearby destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen , and Tulum.

While Holbox is arguably one of the safest tourist destinations in Quintana Roo, you should still practice basic street smarts when traveling.

For example, don’t leave your personal belongings unattended at the beach, stay aware of your surroundings, and don’t spend time on the beach alone after dark.

Do you need travel insurance for Mexico? Yes! Most insurance plans in your home country will not cover incidents abroad. I recommend using Travel Insurance Master, which is a handy travel insurance marketplace where you can compare policies. Get a FREE quote by clicking here !

What is Holbox Like?

At approximately 26 miles (42 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, Holbox is a cute and colorful tropical island.

The main tourist area is centered around a small town square, that’s surrounded by just a few blocks.

What most people don’t realize is that most of the island is not inhabited, which makes it feel a lot smaller than it is.

And probably the most noteworthy thing about Holbox is that there are no paved roads and very few cars, adding to its very laid-back vibe.

Instead, you’ll find beefed-up golf carts with four-wheel tires that are built to handle the muddy roads during the rainy season.

You can easily walk almost anywhere on the island, but to reach some of the more remote hotels, you can also rent bicycles or take one of the many golf cart taxis.

The island is also known for its shallow, crystal-clear water and incredible white sand beaches.

The main stretch of beach is lined with beach bars, beach clubs, and little kiosks selling day trips and tours.

Reasons to Visit Holbox Island Mexico

Here are 5 reasons to visit Holbox:

  • Beautiful beaches with shallow waters : Holbox isn’t extensive, but the main beach, Playa Holbox, is a mile-long stretch of sand with beautiful, shallow waters. Holbox honestly has some of the best beaches in Mexico and it’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun.
  • Laid back vibes : Holbox definitely feels like a welcome escape from the busy nearby tourist destinations like Cancun or Playa del Carmen . It’s generally much quieter, but there’s still plenty to do.
  • Bioluminescence : Holbox is one of the few places in the world that is home to bioluminescent plankton, which creates a stunning natural light show in the water at night. You can take a night bioluminescence tour on a boat or kayak and enjoy the glowing waters around you.
  • Lively nightlife : Despite the low population and laid-back atmosphere, Holbox has surprisingly good nightlife for such a small island. There are only a handful of bars and clubs, but they become packed at night, often with live music, especially during peak season.
  • Birdwatching : Holbox is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve and is an island paradise for people who love birdwatching and nature activities. There’s a 3-island tour that practically guarantees you’ll see some flamingos and includes a stop at an island completely overrun by hundreds of different species of birds.

Who is Holbox Best Suited For?

Even though Holbox has a low-key vibe, it’s perfect for many different types of travelers.

Solo travelers love Holbox because it’s a great place to meet people, especially if you stay at one of the hostels downtown or even one of the boutique hotels near the beach.

It’s also great for couples and families, as it’s considered relatively safe, and there are many different activities for everyone, ranging from beach and water sports to boat tours.

Holbox is particularly appealing to those who want to spend time relaxing on the beach or step out of their comfort zone and experience something more authentic.

It’s also highly recommended for nature lovers because you have incredible bioluminescent waters at night and several islands with tons of birds and other exotic wildlife nearby.

Where is Holbox?

Isla Holbox Mexico is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the northern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The best way to get to Holbox is to travel by ferry or boat from Chiquila.

Chiquila is a small town, with not much there except a few restaurants, parking lots, and, of course, the ferry terminal to Holbox.

Chiquila is about 2 hours from both Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and Holbox is a 30-minute ferry ride from Chiquila.

How to Get to Holbox

Due to its remote location, getting to Holbox takes a bit more work but it’s still pretty straightforward once you know what you’re doing.

Fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN)

The first thing you’ll do is fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN). This is the largest airport in the region and very conveniently located just outside of Cancun.

From Cancun Airport, it’s easy to get to almost anywhere else in the Yucatan Peninsula or anywhere you’d like to go.

Drive from Cancun International Airport to Chiquila

Next, you’ll drive from Cancun International Airport to Chiquila.

Chiquila is about 90 miles (145 km) from Cancun Airport, and the drive usually takes just under 2 hours. There’s one main highway leaving Cancun and usually not too much traffic.

If you don’t have a car, Cancun Airport Transportation offers private airport transportation directly to Chiquila. There are also shared shuttles from Cancun airport to Chiquila.

Additionally, you can also take an ADO bus from downtown Cancun to Chiquila. The bus usually takes just over two hours and drops you off at the ferry port to Holbox.

Take the Ferry from Chiquila to Isla Holbox

Once you’re in Chiquila, all you have to do is head to the ferry terminal on the water. There’s one main road in Chiquila, and it leads you directly to the ferry terminal.

There are several overnight parking lots around the ferry terminal. And if you’re traveling with a larger group, you can take a private boat over the Isla Holbox rather than the ferry.

Several little booths near the ferry terminal allow you to book your boat tickets if you decide on this route over the ferry.

The ferry terminal in Isla Holbox is about a 15-minute walk from downtown Holbox and the main beach. You can walk or take one of the golf cart taxis, usually waiting near the ferry terminal.

Note : If you’re traveling to Holbox from Playa del Carmen , you can drive directly there, take a private shuttle, or take an ADO bus to the ferry terminal in Chiquila.

Best Time to Visit Holbox

The best time to visit Holbox is between December and April. The weather is much cooler during these months, with little chance of rain.

Peak season is at the end of December through the holidays, and things can get a little expensive and crowded during these months.

Summer months are usually more affordable and less crowded, but it gets humid and sometimes unpleasant. Few stores, restaurants, and even some hotels don’t have good air-conditioning.

Hurricane season and rainy season in the Yucatan Peninsula and Gulf of Mexico are June through November.

Travelista Tip: I know this isn’t always feasible, but if you can, keep an eye on the weather and avoid traveling to the island if the weather doesn’t look too great.  When it rains in Holbox, the roads get extremely muddy and flooded and there isn’t much to do.

Is Holbox Expensive?

Holbox is one of the more expensive destinations in Mexico but it can still be very affordable depending on your travel style.

Its remote location makes the prices for food, groceries, and drinks a bit more expensive.

But if you’re on a budget, you can definitely still find cheap hostels, street food, or local Holbox restaurants to make Holbox more affordable.

And if you have a higher budget, you can definitely find boutique luxury hotels and upscale restaurants to splurge at.

I have also found that most tours and excursions in Holbox are pretty affordable, so that’s another way to save money.

Best Things to Do in Holbox

If you’re wondering what to do in Holbox , here are 5 of the best things to do:

Spend a Day at the Beach

Holbox is known for its beautiful beaches, so it would be a shame to go to this tiny island and miss out on spending a day at the beach!

The beach is right past the main square, so it’s easy to find and close to almost everything.

Holbox beach stretches for a mile, so you can easily find a spot in the sun. Or you can visit one of the Holbox beach clubs for lounge chairs and food and beverage service.

But the best thing about Holbox beaches is the shallow turquoise waters–you can wade out a great distance without fighting with waves or deep drop-offs.

And if the weather is nice, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the beach shacks along the beach.

Travelista Tip: Holbox is also the perfect place to watch a gorgeous Caribbean sunset. Make sure to find your spot at least a half hour before the sun sets to get a good view.

Swim with Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is a chemical process that makes organisms (jellyfish, fish, fungi, and even insects) emit light.

It can be compared to seeing a firefly light up the sky in the dead of the night, but bioluminescence on Holbox occurs along the shoreline and in the water.

Holbox is one of the few places in the world that has bioluminescent plankton so this shouldn’t be missed!

The best way to see it is by booking a Holbox bioluminescence tour , which will take you snorkeling or kayaking at night with a group of people.

Go on the Three-Island Tour

The Three-Island Tour is a popular Holbox boat tour from the ferry terminal in Holbox to visit 3 different nearby islands.

The first stop is usually Punta Mosquito, where you can find wild flamingos and other birds.

Next, you visit Isla Pasion, an uninhabited island with a tropical beach surrounded by palm trees and lush vegetation.

Afterward, you go to Isla Pajaros, an uninhabited island with dozens of birds. You’ll also stop in at Yalahau, where you’ll have time to swim in the Yalahau cenote.

Try the Lobster Pizza

Lobster Pizza is Holbox’s signature dish and a must-try for seafood lovers visiting the island.

It doesn’t sound spectacular, but it’s such a unique combination of flavors and almost always made with fresh lobster caught that morning, so it can’t be missed.

Make sure you add some local spices and sauces served with the pizza to add even more flavor.

Almost every restaurant claims they were the first to serve lobster pizza or have the best lobster pizza on the island. But Roots Pizza is one of the best restaurants for lobster pizza and a great place to give it a try!

And if you’re not a fan of lobster, don’t worry. There’s plenty of other delicious food around the island, pulling from both local cuisine and international favorites.

Join One of the Whale Shark Tours

Whale shark season in Holbox is between May and September so if you happen to be visiting during this time, it’s an incredible activity to consider.

You can book a Holbox whale sharks tour with knowledgeable travel guides and swim with these majestic creatures.

And despite being one of the largest fishes alive today, whale sharks are actually gentle giants and won’t hurt you.

It’s honestly an unforgettable experience–I swam with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres and it was absolutely incredible!

  • Where to Stay in Holbox

In Holbox, you’ll find a variety of rustic Mexican-style accommodations to fit different budgets and preferences.

Whether you’re looking for the luxury of a high-end resort, the cozy charm of a boutique hotel, or the budget-friendly simplicity of a hostel, you’ll find it here.

However, if your budget allows, I would highly recommend choosing a beachfront hotel. This will give you direct access to the beautiful beach and lounge chairs to enjoy during your stay.

And staying closer to downtown will give you easy access to all the restaurants, bars, and shops on the island.

But even if you choose to stay at one of the more remote hotels, you can easily hire a golf cart taxi to get around.

Here are the best hotels in Holbox for every budget:

  • Luxury : Hotel Villas Flamingos
  • Mid-Range : Villas HM Palapas del Mar
  • Budget : Madre Holbox
Travelista Tip: The hotels on the right side of downtown typically have the best beachfront area in Holbox with less seaweed.

Tips for Visiting Holbox

Are you ready for your unforgettable trip to Isla Holbox? Here are a few more Holbox tips for your next trip to the Island of Holbox:

  • Bring plenty of cash : There are very few ATMs on the island, and they aren’t always guaranteed to work. Some places accept credit cards, but you can’t rely on them during bad weather when internet service can be spotty. Make sure to bring enough Mexican pesos or USD for your visit.
  • Use biodegradable sunscreen : If you plan on swimming in the ocean, it’s important to only wear reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen to protect the fragile marine environment.
  • Be prepared to disconnect: WiFi on Holbox Island in Mexico is incredibly unreliable, and only a few restaurants and bars have WiFi. Be ready to disconnect from the outside world and enjoy every second away from your phone and laptop.
  • Don’t miss the street art: One of the first things you might notice in downtown Holbox is the incredible street art. Make sure to take a second to admire the beautiful art.
  • Check the weather: When it rains in Holbox, the streets can get extremely flooded and muddy and there isn’t much to do. Try to check the weather ahead of time and prepare accordingly.

Visiting Isla Holbox: FAQs

Here are some of the frequently asked questions about visiting Isla Holbox:

Holbox has been a secret for a long time, although it’s becoming much more popular in recent years. However, it has still kept its small town charm with its lack of paved roads, friendly locals, and beautiful nature.

When comparing Holbox vs Isla Mujeres , it really depends on your preferences. Isla Mujeres is more developed and sees many more visitors. However, Holbox has more of a laid-back atmosphere and rustic accommodations.

People visit Holbox to escape the crowds often found on mainland Mexico and enjoy the incredible nature. You can swim in the calm waters, go on a whale shark tour, visit bird islands, and view the nighttime bioluminescence.

Yes, Holbox is safe for solo travelers. There are tons of travelers flocking here and it’s an excellent place to meet other solo travelers. It’s a small island with relatively low crime rates compared to other popular spots on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Typically 2-3 days is enough in Holbox, depending on what you’re planning on doing. With a few days, you’ll have time to try local street food, relax on the beach, and join a few guided tours. However, more time away from reality is never a bad thing, either.

Final Thoughts: Is Holbox Worth Visiting for Tourists?

Overall, the island of Holbox is undoubtedly worth visiting for tourists. It’s a small tropical paradise that feels like an oasis away from the rest of busy Mexico.

However, make sure you plan your trip around the weather to make the most of it and come prepared with enough cash and plans for the entirety of your trip.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to enjoy the sun and sand–after all, Holbox has some of the best beaches in Mexico.

No matter what you do, you will have an unforgettable time relaxing on the beaches and enjoying the stunning tropical landscapes in Holbox.

Traveling to Mexico soon?

These are the Mexico travel resources I use and recommend:

Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.
