The Best Areas To Stay in Amsterdam

culture trip amsterdam hotels

While all of Amsterdam’s central and outlying neighbourhoods are unanimously charming, some parts of the city have a certain additional appeal. Culture Trip has put together the following list of the most accommodating, fun and laid-back parts of the city.

Weesperzijde.

This small neighbourhood in Amsterdam-Oost runs down the eastern side of the River Amstel and looks onto de Pijp. Its main thoroughfare, Wibautstraat, is named after a famous city planner and was once seen as one of the ugliest streets in Amsterdam. However, during the late 20th century, the area was altered by several urban development projects and is now among the trendiest parts of Amsterdam, partly due to the presence of Volkshotel – a stylish boutique hotel that features a restaurant , ateliers, and a rooftop nightclub. Though it is easy enough to spend entire weekends chilling out inside this all-in-one boutique hotel, there are many other hangouts spread around Weesperzijde. There’s a cellar-like bar called de Ruyschkamer , which stocks specialist, imported beer, as well as Beter & Leuk , which serves excellent coffee, fresh juice and healthy, organic meals.

Amsterdam-Noord

Oud-West lies just beyond Vondelpark and covers the ground between Overtoom, Kinkerstraat and de Clercqstraat – three of the most popular streets in Amsterdam. This multicultural, densely-populated neighbourhood is particularly well-stocked with restaurants and bars, including several famous hang-outs such as OT301 , De Gollem, and Café Panache . Oud-West also has its fair share of excellent accommodation, like Hotel de Hallen, which is part of a massive cultural hub. It features an arthouse cinema and an artisanal food court. While there are many nightlife spots in the neighbourhood, Oud-West’s streets tend to stay relatively quiet during the weekend and its bars, cinemas and venues aren’t usually too hectic on Saturday or Friday nights.

Oud-West

Thanks to its excellent roster of brunch restaurants , picturesque urban layout, and iconic Albert Cuyp Market, de Pijp might be the best place in Amsterdam to chill out over the weekend. Besides these superb attractions, de Pijp also boasts a large concentration of bars and pubs – many of which possess late-night licences. Okura is regularly cited as the best hotel in de Pijp, whereas Amsterdam Hostel Sarphati and Atlantis Hotel Amsterdam offer more affordable lodging. Then there’s the Arcade Hotel , where every single room features modern and vintage video game consoles..

De Pijp

Named after a large park in its centre, Westerpark is located on the north-western corner of Amsterdam’s canal belt and trails into the city’s docklands. As large parts of the neighbourhood were built during the height of Amsterdamse School architecture , many of its residential buildings feature stunning Art Deco-esque flourishes and expressive brickwork. For restaurants, nightlife and entertainment travellers should definitely check out Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam’s largest cultural pavilion that contains restaurants, music venues, an arthouse cinema and even an old-school, coin-op arcade called de TonTon Club West . There are many excellent hotels in the neighbourhood, ranging from stylish designer lodgings at places like Westward Art Hotel Amsterdam, to exclusive waterfront apartments at Yays Zoutkeetsgracht

This charming, residential neighbourhood in western Amsterdam is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere, photogenic townhouses , and impressive culinary sector. Despite being part of Amsterdam-Centrum, de Jordaan moves at a more relaxed pace than the rest of the inner city, making it perfect for quiet, urban getaways. Its central location also means that visitors based in de Jordaan can easily access many of the city’s main sites such as the Anne Frank House, Dam Square , and the canal belt by foot. Many of the neighbourhood’s hotels are located inside renovated canal houses. For instance, there’s Linden Hotel on Lindengraght, which overlooks two parallel canals, or Mr. Jordaan Hotel, which is housed within a spacious, 19th-century building.

The 5 Best Hotels in Amsterdam

From picture-perfect parks to sophisticated museums, the charms of the Dutch capital are many — and so are the city’s exceptional hotels.

World-class museums, leafy parks, quaint neighborhood cafés, and postcard views — Amsterdam has it all. And the Dutch capital makes looking for culture and beauty easy: nearly everything can be reached by bike or on foot. Of course, after a full day of exploring the sites — like the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum — and popping into the many cheese shops and looking for tulips in spring, there's nothing like coming back to one of the best hotels in Amsterdam. Our editors are honoring those properties with this brand-new list of reader favorites.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

T+L readers raved about the picturesque canal views from Amsterdam's most stylish hotels. But many properties also earned points for their interiors. One such example is city icon De L'Europe, which celebrated its 125th anniversary last year and underwent a top-to-bottom refresh in 2020 to eight suites in a separate wing. "It perfectly marries the past with the present," said one guest of the No. 5 hotel's renovation. "Love the design and the vibe in the lobby," agreed another visitor. "Not the usual bland gray on beige."

Another hallmark of the best Amsterdam hotels is exemplary service. Of the Ambassade Hotel (No.4) one four-time guest wrote, "This is our favorite hotel because we can count on being welcomed and treated well."

But of all the well-appointed hotels in Amsterdam, it was the Pulitzer, set in the posh Nine Streets district, that captured the No. 1 spot. Read on to find out why and to learn more about the five best hotels in Amsterdam.

1. Pulitzer Amsterdam

Set within 25 restored 17th- and 18th-century canal houses, Pulitzer is a testament to the trade history of the Dutch East India Company. (Wealthy merchants built homes along the inner rings of canals.) Taking a cruise is essential when visiting Amsterdam, and T+L readers appreciated the option to do so on the Pulitzer's own saloon boat, which can be booked privately and with a food and beverage package. "It was an exceptional experience at dusk," said one reader. In fact, special amenities and superb service were hallmarks of the property. One guest wrote: "We arrived early, and they put us in another comfortable room until ours was ready. And at check in, the manager on duty invited us to a concert being held in front of the hotel that evening. What a trip!"

Best Hotels in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Neighborhood

If you’re looking for a luxury city break, Amsterdam should be on your mind. The city is iconic (for many a reason, naughty and nice) and filled with budget escapes and luxury hotels that will exceed your expectations.

The hustle and bustle is a phenomenal experience. But having a safe, calm place to return to will turn your Dam trip into beautiful memories.

When I first went to this city as a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed travelling noob, I fucked up. I spent so much time commuting between my hotel and the city that I missed a lot of what makes Amsterdam so special. Booking a hotel that is a hub of relaxation nearby the famous Amsterdam canals will provide you with a peaceful oasis to escape to .

Not only do the hotels impress, but so do the culture and world-class museums. The Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum leave you with a fresh perspective of what life was like in this city all those years ago.

You could even have the best of BOTH worlds and find a hotel with a spa. A relaxing massage or rejuvenating facial to leave you feeling as good as you look. 😉 Spend time in the private sauna whilst looking at scenic city views.

We’ll discuss hotels in locations: city center, Amsterdam Oost, Amsterdam Zuid, and more. This Dam hotel guide also goes into depth over the amenities offered in the hotel, the quality of the rooms, and the surrounding attractions.

With cheeky boutique hotels and five-star hotels littered throughout the city, let’s get into the best hotels in Amsterdam!

Amsterdam

Selection Criteria

City center, amsterdam oost, de wallen – the red light district, amsterdam zuid, museum quarter / voldelpark, tips for booking a hotel in amsterdam, tips for booking a hotel in amsterdam on a budget, faqs about amsterdam’s hotels, discover amsterdam with the broke backpacker.

It is important to decipher the key factors when booking a hotel in Amsterdam. Here’s what you should consider:

  • Location  – Your location when visiting Amsterdam is arguably, the most important factor when booking a hotel. Whilst in the city centre, the prices will usually be higher, you will save money on transport costs. Whereas locations outside of the centre often are cheaper and have more charm.
  • Customer reviews and ratings –  As most people should agree, the reviews and ratings of hotels matter. Your experience at a hotel can make or break a trip. The best hotels in Amsterdam have many positive reviews – so look out for them!
  • Amenities and services  – Amenities and services are an important factor, especially when travelling with children. From spas, 24-hour reception, and pools, having hotels with modern amenities can elevate your trip.
  • Price range  – Budgets vary for each trip. This list caters to budget-friendly travellers and those looking for a more expensive getaway.
  • Unique features or experiences  – I have chosen hotels with unique features to make sure that your trip is filled with excitement. Each hotel has its own authentic experience to ensure you have a trip of a lifetime.

Amsterdam Canal Bridge Hotel

With all those factors considered, how you use this selection criteria will be determined by your circumstances. For example, if you want to be in the heart of the city, you may be happy to sacrifice the charm of the smaller neighborhoods to be closer to attractions. Think about what you like most when you’re on a city break, and let’s go from here…

Amsterdam City Center is the historical heart of Amsterdam. It’s the most popular area to stay in Amsterdam amongst tourists as you are directly encapsulated in the bustling streets, sleek canals, and the craziest of crazy attractions.

Despite hotel prices being slightly more pricey, you will likely find that by staying here, you will save money on transport costs. You’ll find Dam Square, The Royal Palace, The Sex Museum, Madame Tussauds, and endless canal-boat tours.

Here are the best hotels in the City Center.

Hotel 717

For a “home away from home” type of experience, I recommend you stay at Hotel 717. This private guest house is situated in a 19th-century building, but inside has every modern amenity you could need. This includes bathrobes, complimentary Wi-Fi, concierge services, and a bar and lounge.

The atmosphere here is relaxed, and you really get to soak in the ever-present, bright Amsterdam atmosphere. Before heading out, grab a plate of continental breakfast, where you can find a delicious full English breakfast with all the trimmings.

Hotel 717 is 14 km from the Schiphol Airport, one of Amsterdam’s most popular airports. You can also find the Anne Frank House and the Heineken experience just a short walk away.

Waldorf Astoria

Waldorf Astoria

For an experience of utter luxury, book your stay at Waldorf Astoria. This hotel is the perfect romantic getaway for a night of indulgence and high class.

Waldorf Astoria consists of six phenomenal 17th-century canal palaces that ooze elegance. The authentic Dutch-inspired design compliments the historic charm that makes this city.

While here, you’ll have views of the canal and courtyard garden, an indoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and treatment rooms for relaxing massages. After you have wound-down in the spa, head to the Spectrum restaurant or Vault Bar for a glass of wine and rich, flavor-filled food.

Once you leave the hotel, you will be surrounded by things to do in Amsterdam , including visiting the vibrant Rembrandtplein and the Museum Quarter, which is home to three of the most famous (you’ve guessed it) museums in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Oost has charming streets with 19th century buildings and a more local feel. There are also a multitude of lush green areas to enjoy.

Take a stroll in this area and be greeted with vibrant markets, museums, and adorable cafes. There are also evening activities just as visiting the trendy brewery bars, wine hot spots, and some great coffeeshops if you want to enjoy the green stuff. These attributes alone make it a great area for a couples’ getaway.

Here are the best hotels in Amsterdam Oost.

Pillows Maurits at the Park

Pillows Maurits at the Park

Pillow Maurits at the Park is one of the best boutique hotels in Amsterdam and a foodie’s dream.

If you’re hoping to experience the food that Amsterdam has to offer, there simply isn’t a better place to stay. Begin your culinary journey with a mouth-watering lunch at the vibrant Spring Cafe/Brasserie. In the evening, have a rich dinner at the VanOost Restaurant before dancing the night away at Fitz’s Bar.

Continuing to exceed expectations, this hotel is also surrounded by popular tourist attractions, including the Royal Theater Carre, The Dutch National Opera and ballet house, and a gorgeous flower market. If you’re heading to Amsterdam in the summer , you can experience the hotel’s rooftop bar, which has the best views of Oosterpark.

The hotel offers safe, underground parking, which has charging points for electric vehicles – great if you are renting a car while you stay.

Wittenberg by Cove

This Amsterdam hotel is one of my favorites in the city for getting the best of both worlds. As well as being within walking distance to Dam Square and central station, you get some extra touches that most hotels don’t offer.

You’ll get your own stunning apartment in a monumental building for that true Dutch style stay. The rooms are beautifully light and homey. All accommodations also offer their own kitchen which helps those watching to save some money on food will love.

It’s perfect for digital nomads who like a quiet space to balance work and life. This is also one of the best hotels for families in Amsterdam so your brood can have all the space they need.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

De Wallen, also known as the red light district, is one of the city’s oldest parts. There is a huge juxtaposition within this area; with charming churches and scenic canal walks, that debauchery is something particularly unique that you should see with your own eyes.

You should be cautious of petty crimes such as pickpocketing in this area, especially at night. However, don’t let that put you off visiting, as this area is generally safe and is home to many popular things to do in Amsterdam.

Here are the best hotels in De Wallen.

Anantara Grand Hotel

Anantara Grand Hotel

Looking to stay in the heart of Amsterdam? Well then, you need to book a stay at the Anantara Grand Hotel.

The five-star hotel is in a prime location, opposite the Royal Palace and on the edge of the famous Dam Square. You will be right by Central Station, just a 15-minute walk away, which will take you anywhere you wish around the city. One thing for sure is you will never be short of something to do in this location.

The hotel is a 19th-century building that offers stylish furniture, parquet floors, and spacious, modern rooms. Each room has en-suite bathrooms and a selection of delightful teas to drink before retiring for the night. Enjoy the ambiance at Grand Cafe Krasnapolsky and indulge in classic dishes with a contemporary twist.

This hotel has glowing reviews, and that mainly comes down to the amazing staff at Antara Grand Hotel. They go above and beyond to make your stay even better than you could have imagined.

Hotel The Craftsmen

Hotel The Craftsmen

Look no further if you’re looking for a hotel filled with charm and character. The Craftsmen Hotel is one of the best boutique hotels in Amsterdam, with gorgeous views of the river. Wake up in the morning, in your cozy room, to the smell of croissants and butter pastries coming from the gallery downstairs.

The hotel rooms are filled with unique furniture and amenities to keep you comfortable such as free Wi-Fi, a fridge, and a flat-screen TV. You can choose to devour your continental breakfast in your room or the stunning gallery.

Hotel Estherea

A girl’s getaway done right. Hotel Estherea is the perfect location for a hen-do or birthday celebration. This hotel is situated along the Singel Canal and is in the perfect, serene setting. Plus, you will have the most amazing views to wake up to.

Each of the rooms of this hotel is decorated in floral yet elegant designs with classically-styled wooden paneling. The breakfast is filled with delicious treats such as scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, hot chocolates, and fresh juices.

Hotel Estherea is within the city center, within walking distance of the most popular museums and shopping areas, and has easy access to Amsterdam’s nightlife. You can even stop by one of the many iconic Amsterdam cafes for a classy afternoon tea.

Amsterdam Zuid is regarded as the luxury area of Amsterdam where self-indulgence is prioritised. This location is home to some of the nicest hotels in Amsterdam and prioritizes modern amenities. The attractions also encompass the high-class atmosphere with famous museums, high-end shopping and extravagant restaurants.

Here are the best hotels in Amsterdam Zuid.

Hotel TWENTY EIGHT

If you’re looking to steep yourself into what life as a local in Amsterdam would be like, you should book an overnight stay at Hotel Twenty Eight.

This unique hotel offers apartment-style accommodation with the added benefits of a luxury hotel. Here you can find facilities such as a sauna, an on-site restaurant, and a top-tier fitness center. You can choose to have a cozy morning and cook in your own apartment or visit the restaurant for a boutique breakfast made with local ingredients.

The hotel is well-connected. Just 300 meters away is the metro station, and across the street is the direct tramline which will take you to Museum Square and the city center. The staff here will help you plan excursions around the city and let you know the location of popular attractions. Hire bikes and cars to take you to your desired location.

Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel

Pestana Amsterdam Riverside Hotel

Kicking off this list with a bang is Pestana Amsterdam Riverside, a luxury five-star hotel, which is surprisingly one of the great value hotels in Amsterdam. This absolutely monumental building that was formerly a town hall has been converted into a luxurious place to stay.

The hotel has 154 bedrooms and suites, each with its own unique identity. The rooms are equipped with modern amenities and home comforts such as free toiletries, coffee and tea-making facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi, and private bathrooms. Some suites have panoramic river-side views that simply cannot be missed.

Before heading out to the nearby attractions such as Albert Cuypmarkt street market, The Heineken Experience, and Stedelijk Museum, you can dine at the private buffet breakfast.

You might also gravitate towards the wellness area, which includes an indoor swimming pool, treatment massages, and two different types of saunas. Yes, please!

Van der Valk Hotel

culture trip amsterdam hotels

Wellness is a priority at the Van der Valk Hotel. Visit the wellness center to unwind after a long day of sightseeing before turning in for the night. The wellness center has different types of saunas, including a heated outdoor pool, foot baths, and steam baths.

This hotel also offers an extensive breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet, so you can always return to the hotel for a bite to eat. You can even stop by for their live cooking dinner buffet with delectable slices of pizza. If you fancy a midnight snack, you can visit Bar Mokum for coffee, cocktails, and pastries – one of my favorite bars in the city!

When you are ready to leave the comfort of the hotel and explore, the metro is a five-minute walk away.

nhow Amsterdam Rai

nhow Amsterdam Rai

If modern is your vibe, then the nhow Amsterdam Rai Hotel will be your ideal location. It is one of the best hotels in Amsterdam for executives traveling for business.

Each room also has floor-to-ceiling windows that offer the city’s most encapsulating views. You will also notice Nespresso coffee machines, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and digital safes.

If you’re willing to spend a little more, the junior suite has a private Jacuzzi. Enjoy the continental buffet breakfast in the morning, serving continental and American-style cuisine.

Feeling fancy? Find gourmet food in the 17th-floor restaurant and sip cocktails on the terrace.

You can find the hotel next to the RAI Convention Center and a short distance from the subway which will take you to any attraction you wish.

Motel One

Motel One is easily one of the best affordable hotels in Amsterdam. The hotel is just outside the hustle and bustle of the city but close enough to spend your days exploring.

You can expect to find flat-screen TVs, comfortable beds, and ensuite bathrooms at the hotel. The staff here also speak several languages, including German, Greek, English, and Spanish, so they can give advice and information where needed.

Schiphol Airport is just 16km away. Attractions such as Dam Square and Beurs van Berlage are also in the surrounding area. Don’t forget to stop by Rembrandt House, 500 meters away.

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

The Museumkwartier area was developed after the construction of the Rijksmuseum. Subsequently, this area is better known as the Museum Quarter with several famous museums in the neighborhood.

It’s important to keep in mind that this area is often filled with tourists and can get extremely busy during the day. If you want to avoid crowds, visit attractions as early as possible.

Here are the best hotels in Museumkwartier.

Conservatorium Hotel

Conservatorium Hotel

Slightly more pricey than other hotels mentioned, the Conservatorium is in the middle of Amsterdam’s hotspots.

The hotel combines historical architecture and modem design to create tasteful rooms. Bask in rainfall showers, spacious bathrooms, marble tubs, and LCD mirrors inside the rooms.

The hotel also has a brasserie in a gorgeous glass courtyard where you can have a graceful afternoon tea. But that is not all: guests have complimentary access to the Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre, which has a large swimming pool, a sauna, a whirlpool, and more.

You can cut travel costs by choosing this location as you are next to the Van Gogh Museum, the Royal Concert Hall, and the Rijksmuseum.

College Hotel

College Hotel

An oasis of peace and quiet is how the College Hotel is best described. This 19th-century historical building boasts classic charm with a modern twist. Each room has complimentary Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, bathrobes, and fluffy slippers to make your stay simply divine. Walk through this Amsterdam boutique hotel and be welcomed by a delicious summer lunch on the terrace.

This hotel is tucked away but is still reasonably close to points of interest. Enjoy learning at the Van Gogh Museum, or take a sunset walk at Vondelpark. For dinner, stop by Amsterdam’s popular tapas restaurants, including Momo and Foodhallen.

Park Plaza Vondelpark

Park Plaza Vondelpark

You can find this hotel located in Amsterdam’s uptown neighborhood, Oud-Zuid, just a stone’s throw away from the stunning Vondelpark. Park Plaza Vondelpark is located right by “Little Paris” which is known for its list of shops, restaurants, and bars. You can also find Museum Square here for a day of exploring Amsterdam’s history .

The hotel offers clean, modern rooms with helpful staff who help to make your stay even more delightful. Depending on the room, you may gain access to fantastic views of the iconic Vondelpark. Either way, you will still get to relax in the private garden.

Inside the hotel, you can find an award-winning restaurant that specializes in Venetian-sharing plates. Here, you can dine in style with a large selection of red wines, classic Italian cocktails, and authentic Italian dishes. Devine!

This location offers direct access to popular attractions such as the Van Gogh Museum, Dam Square, and Leidse Square, making this a hotel not to miss.

Hard Rock Hotel

Hard Rock Hotel

Faultless customer service in a hotel filled with historical stories. Could you get any better than that? The Hard Rock Hotel is a staple when it comes to the question of where to stay in Amsterdam.

The rooms are very comfortable, with air conditioning, a fridge, a kettle, and a shower. They also host a continental or buffet breakfast serving all your morning favorites.

If you only have a short weekend in Amsterdam , this hotel is perfect as it is perfectly located to access several attractions quickly.

Hotel Park 6

Hotel Park 6

This 19th-century building is located on one of the most elegant streets in Amsterdam. Hotel Park 6 was recently renovated and now has thirty refreshing rooms with walk-in showers, queen-size beds, and wireless sound systems. Depending on the room you book, you may even be spoiled with a terrace or French balcony.

Hotel Park 6 is the perfect relaxing retreat just far enough outside the busy city center. If you’re an early riser, cross the road to Vondelpark to watch the sunrise before returning to the hotel for a simple yet filling breakfast.

Nearby attractions include many of the best museums in Amsterdam like the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

Amsterdam is a surprisingly small city and has great transport options. With that in mind, you should think twice about where you choose to stay.

Whilst the city center is often popular amongst tourists, staying here is only ideal for those that have a short trip. If you are staying in Amsterdam for a couple of days, being right by the attractions is convenient. However, if your stay is longer, these areas can get very crowded and noisy.

making money and busking

If your trip is longer, opt for hotels in neighborhoods out of the center. You’ll find hidden gems and way more green spaces.

Also keep in mind that Amsterdam is popular all year round. The nicest hotels in Amsterdam seem to get booked quickly. You should book your hotel as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment.

Amsterdam experiences its peak tourism in May and August. This is when hotel prices are at their highest.

To avoid expensive hotel prices, try and book your trip outside of these months. September and October are great times to visit as the weather starts to cool and the fall foilage starts to bloom. The hotel prices also tend to decrease during this time.

If you’re on a tighter budget, Amsterdam’s bed and breakfasts are a great combo. Although arguably not as sleek, they offer a unique stay to set you up for your trip.

Let’s do a quick-fire round! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Dam’s hotels.

Which are the best hotels in Amsterdam City Center?

These are 3 of my favorite hotels in the beating heart of Dam: Hotel 717 Waldorf Astoria Hotel Estherea

Are there any good cheap hotels in Amsterdam?

Yes! Though for the better quality, it’s best to stay a little further out as the cheap options in the city center are cheap for a (bad) reason. Motel One is great budget hotel in Amsterdam with great connections to the city and the airport.

Can I stay in a boutique hotel in Amsterdam?

You bet your ass you can. Amsterdam has some of the best boutique hotels in the world. I highly recommend Ecomama (although they offer dorm accommodation too). Check out the list to find that perfect unique stay for you.

What are hotels in Amsterdam like for couples?

Oh damn, they fine. I tell you what, there’s something about the sex capital of the world that makes for some red hot nights in hotels. Check out the hotels in the Museum Quarter / Vondelpark area!

It goes without saying that Amsterdam delivers when it comes to a city vacation destination. With available transport options ready to take you to every famous destination and connecting trains and trams that will take you across the city, you will never be short of things to do in Amsterdam.

So much history, charm, and character is just waiting to be uncovered here. Explore museums, visit historic sites, and take in the incredible architecture.

In my opinion, this article has some of the best hotels in Amsterdam. And although you may be spoiled for choice, I am sure that the one you choose will make your stay sublime.

Whether it is a budget-friendly hotel or a luxurious hotel with a spa, it’s important to find the hotel that matches your needs. With all that being said, your trip to Amsterdam will undoubtedly be a trip of a lifetime.

Almost 50 years after John Lennon and Yoko Ono promoted world peace from room 702 of the Hilton, hotels in Amsterdam are more worthy of the spotlight than ever. But even for seasoned travellers, finding the best area to stay in Amsterdam takes a bit of research.

Find the best area to stay in Amsterdam

The old centre: the best area to stay in amsterdam on a budget, grachtengordel south: the rising amsterdam area, the jordaan: well away from tourists, the eastern docklands and amsterdam noord, the old jewish quarter and plantage, the museum quarter: best area for culture, the outer districts: top-notch stays for less.

The Dutch capital’s accommodation options are among the most exciting in Europe. And now, with the Eurostar route between London and Amsterdam, they are more accessible than ever. So we've done the research, found you the best parts of Amsterdam and recommended hotels in each one.

Travel tip: Plan your Amsterdam adventure with The Rough Guide to Amsterdam and stay connected throughout your trip with a great value SIM or eSIM from SIMCorner .

Take your pick from handsomely converted old canal houses, sleek-and-chic boutique B&Bs and luxurious short-stay apartments. Or choose quirkier options like houseboats, a converted tram depot and even a crane.

Amsterdam may be one of the top 5 cities to visit in the Netherlands , but it still caters well for visitors on a budget. So you'll find bargain beds aplenty in the city’s hostels and campsites. Remember, as in most capitals, prices soar during peak season – July and August, Easter and Christmas – especially last-minute, so booking in advance is a must.

If you choose to stay in the Old Centre , you’ll be a short walk from the main sights and the principal shopping and nightlife areas. Many first-time visitors consider this area the best place to stay in Amsterdam, due to its central location and abundance of budget accommodation options.

This is the first place to start looking if money is tight . Some may find the proximity of the red light district off-putting, although Spuistraat is also here and it's one of Rough Guides' 20 great streets to wander .

Where to Stay in Amsterdam Old Centre

  • For budget stays: the Flying Pig Downtown hostel is clean, large and well run by ex-travellers familiar with the needs of backpackers. It’s justifiably popular, and a very good deal, with mixed dorms, some of which have queen-sized bunks sleeping two.
  • For one-star excellence: Hotel Prinsenhof is a small one-star which has been offering bed and board since 1813. Its 11 rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated, making it one of Amsterdam’s top budget options, but booking ahead is essential.
  • For no-limits luxury: elegant old-timer, De L’Europe Amsterdam , has plenty of fin-de-siècle charm and a central riverside location. The rooms are large and opulent, and there’s also a two-Michelin-star restaurant, Bord’eau, as well as a spa and the glamorous, Freddy’s Bar.
  • For arty stays: As you might have guessed from the name, Art’otel is filled with art. It even has its own gallery and a monthly cultural programme. All 107 rooms contain a unique piece of art and are sleekly styled. Downstairs you’ll find a pool, sauna and gym.
  • For boutique stays: Rooms at The Exchange in the heart of the Old Centre are dressed with all manner of fashiony details. Options range from tiny, pared-back one-star rooms for those on a budget, to pricier, spacious, five-star rooms with great city views.

Ideally positioned for the plethora of clubs, bars and restaurants on and around Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein, the Grachtengordel area is on the rise. The Waldorf Astoria even decided to locate their new hotel here in 2014. And it's also home to the Anne Frank House, a must see in Amsterdam with kids , or without.

There are plenty of options for those on a budget too, including a number of very appealing – and occasionally stylish – hotels along the surrounding canals.

Where to stay in the Grachtengordel

  • For indulgent stays: Waldorf Astoria is housed within a series of conjoined seventeenth-century canal houses in one of the city’s most prestigious neighbourhoods. The hotel has 93 rooms and suites in tasteful, calming neutral shades. It’s hard to fault, except for the eye-watering cost.
  • For canal house stays: Ambassade is an eminently appealing hotel that occupies a series of cleverly renovated seven enth-century canal houses. There are 60-plus rooms, each decorated in period-meets-country-house style. There’s also a well-stocked library and a study room with modern art.
  • For budget stays: Hotel Clemens sits close to the Anne Frank Huis. A well-run two-star budget hotel, with a friendly, knowledgeable owner, it's one of the better options along this busy main road. The rooms are all en-suite, and come with a mini-fridge and LCD TV.
  • For starry stays: Gorgeous in their own right, the combined 17th century canal houses which make up the Pulitzer Amsterdam became even more famous when scenes from Ocean's Twelve were filmed here. Some rooms in this prestigious five-star overlook the inner courtyard and others have canal views.
  • For stylish stays: The Dylan Amsterdam is hip without being pretentious and housed in a 17th century building centred around a beautiful courtyard and terrace. The 40 sumptuous rooms are decorated in neutral tones and there’s also a Michelin-star restaurant on site, serving up modern French cuisine.

Jordaan, the best area to stay in Amsterdam to avoid crowds © Tupungato/Shutterstock

Staying in the Jordaan puts you among the locals, well away from the prime tourist areas. There’s no shortage of bars and restaurants here either, and some of the city’s prettiest canals thread through the district, but you’ll be at least a 15-minute walk from the bright lights.

Be aware when looking for a place to stay that Marnixstraat and Rozengracht are busy main roads.

Where to stay in the Jordaan

  • For inventive design: There’s plenty of buzz surrounding Hotel De Hallen , the stunning conversion of a 1902 tram depot. Original features, such as rails on the dining-room floor and a vaulted glass ceiling, remain intact. And the 55 rooms seem to be suspended within the structure.
  • For canal side stays: Linden Hotel , in the heart of the Jordaan, sits on a corner, so some of the rooms have sweeping views of the canal and its adjoining streets. The functional rooms sleep two to four people and are rather nondescript, with small beds and a shower room.

These up-and-coming districts have some excellent, avant-garde accommodation options, including one of the world's weirdest hotels . And although their industrial architecture and open expanses won't hike Amsterdam up the most beautiful city in the world list, the old centre’s medieval lanes are only a short hop away by ferry or tram.

Where to stay in the Eastern Docklands

  • For unusual stays: Botel , moored at NDSM Pier, is a three-star floating hotel . Its 175 en-suite rooms are either waterside or landside and fairly functional. Staying here might feel like spending time on a cross-Channel ferry, but the bar has internet access, a pool table, juke box and pinball machine.
  • For one-of-a-kind stays: Ever slept 50m in the air? The Crane by YAYS is the world’s first hotel in a crane and offers three ultra-contemporary suites with knee-buckling city views. As you’d expect, there’s a long waiting list, so book well in advance.
  • For boutique stays: DoubleTree by Hilton was the first hotel to set up in the hip NDSM district. It's a plush boutique option and may have icy front-desk staff, but the luxurious rooms, fitness centre, brasserie and bar should more than make up for it.
  • For island stays: Room Mate Aitana is built on an artificial island just metres from Centraal Station. This ultramodern hotel has light, bright rooms that come with an LCD TV and rain shower, plus access to the on-site gym. The breakfast buffet doesn’t finish until noon so it's perfect for late risers.
  • For budget stays: ClinkNOORD Hostel is housed in former Shell headquarters from the 1920s. It offers a range of four to 10 bed dorms (including girls-only dorms) as well as private en-suite rooms. Facilities include a free cinema, self-catering kitchen, café and library, plus a bar with live music.

Not many tourists stay in The Old Jewish Quarter , as it’s a largely residential area, with very few bars or restaurants. You’re pretty much guaranteed a quiet night’s sleep here, plus it's a good district for a green stay in Amsterdam and you're only a tram ride away from the leading sights

Where to stay in the old Jewish Quarter

  • For modern stays: Hotel Arena sits a little way east of the centre. A hip four-star hotel with split-level rooms in tranquil grey or cream it has a lovely, relaxed vibe in the bar. It also offers an intimate restaurant with garden terrace and a lively late-night club located within the former chapel.
  • For indulgent stays: One of the city’s most enduring top-class hotels, the InterContinental Amstel occupies a grand, chateau-style 19th century mansion beside the Singelgracht canal. There’s also an excellent French restaurant, plus a health club with pool and Jacuzzi.
  • For budget stays: Ecomama is a superb, light, bright eco-hostel with green roof, water-saving system and rooms that range from “El Cheapo” twelve-bed dorms to very stylish private en-suite doubles. A women-only dorm is also available here.

The best area to stay in Amsterdam for cultural attractions, the Museum Quarter centres on the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum – although the nightlife around Leidseplein is also within easy striking distance.

There are no canals here, and two of the main drags constantly rumble with traffic, but several good hotels are to be found in the area. You can also take a walk in local Vondelpark, one of the top free things to do in Amsterdam .

Where to stay in the Museum Quarter

  • For old school stays: The College Hotel has been onverted from a nineteenth-century schoolhouse to create an elegant boutique hotel run by hotel-school students. It has tasteful modern rooms, a first-rate restaurant, a swanky bar and a chic terrace.
  • For impressive stays: Conservatorium Hotel is probably Amsterdam's most jaw-dropping stay. The heritage building has been transformed into a contemporary design wonderland. Standard guestrooms come with Nespresso machine and free newspapers, plus access to Akasha – the city’s largest and most opulent spa.
  • For green stays: The youthful and eco-conscious Bicycle Hotel is located down a quiet residential street. It offers two, three and four-bed rooms, plus one with bunk beds and all are bright and clean. During the winter months the hotel usually offers free bike rental too.
  • For deluxe stays: Don’t be fooled by the concrete, purpose-built façade of Okura , this deluxe hotel comes with a spa, pool and fitness centre (complete with personal trainers), plus an astonishing three Michelin starred restaurant. Its 300 rooms boast huge marble bathrooms, and mod cons abound in its suites.
  • For boutique stays: Hotel Roemer is a high-end boutique option, dotted with contemporary art and with its own garden. It caters for discerning business travellers, but will suit non-business types too. They offer a “Roemer Inclusive” rate, which includes all alcoholic drinks, snacks in the afternoon and a scrumptious breakfast.

Amsterdam might not be one of the best places to visit in Europe on a budget , but exciting accommodation options are cropping up in areas such as Amsterdam Oost. This is becoming a reliable spot to find top-notch digs for less and, thanks to reliable and frequent trams, staying here doesn’t place you too far from the action.

Where to stay in the outer districts of Amsterdam

  • For retro stays: Hilton Amsterdam sits way outside the centre by a canal in the distinctly upmarket Nieuw Zuid district and has all the facilities you could hope for. Mainly attracting a business-oriented clientele, it’s only really worth considering if you can afford to soak up a bit of 1960s nostalgia in its stunning “John and Yoko” suite, where the couple held their famous 1969 “Bed-In” for peace.
  • For hostel stays: Stayokay Hostel is located in a former school in a residential area on the eastern outskirts of the city, this hostel has its own bar/restaurant, bike rental and laundry, and is wheelchair accessible. It shares the building with Studio/K, a multipurpose venue that shows art-house films and has a decent restaurant.

Amsterdam is an ideal location for soaking in the culture and experiencing culinary delights. It’s so much more than the Red Light District or a smokers paradise. I recently spent a weekend here (more than ten years after an ill-fated college trip) and could not recommend it more! Take a trip to experience world class food, museums and architecture.

Day 1: A Lay of the Land

A canal flowing within the city with boats during day time.

A Canal Tour is the ideal way to get your bearings and learn about the history of the city. Many of the tours also serve wine, cheese and cocktails. (win win!)

Visit Nazka for a contemporary Peruvian tasting menu. This restaurant is located in the cool De Pijp neighborhood and serves a great variety of fish and meat based dishes. Be sure to try one of their delicious pisco sours.

Sip natural wine at GlouGlou , a natural wine bar just a short walk down the street from Nazka. Find something you like? Take a bottle home with you from their shop. If cocktails are more your thing, or you just want to keep the night going, be sure to visit the Flying Dutchman , an innovative cocktail bar and lounge that’s open until 4 am. Their spicy margaritas were top notch.

Day 2: Bike the Streets

An orange bicycle landmark decorated with yellow and orange flowers.

Sip a morning coffee and try one of the pastry at Pluk before walking (or bike!) down to Vondelpark. Just make sure to look both ways. Those bikes move fast. Following your morning jaunt, visit The Van Gogh Museum . Take in Van Gogh’s masterpieces while also learning about his life and influences.

Refuel with lunch at the Upstairs Pancakehouse . This tiny four table restaurant is located up a steep staircase in a 16th century house. Both the sweet and the savory pancakes are huge and worth every bite. Since it’s so small you MUST make a reservation in advance (and show up on time!)

Spend the afternoon wandering the city and taking in the shops. Shopping is Amsterdam is a must.

Enjoy a casual dinner at Café Parlotte , a lovely neighborhood spot for oysters, charcuterie and cheese. Or Domenica , an Italian restaurant serving creative dishes. End the evening with a drink and apple pie at Winkel 43 , a lively cafe best known for its apple pie (in my opinion more like a delicious apple cake.)

Day 3: A Final Taste of the City

A brown and green building with people and I amsterdam letters in front of it.

Start the morning off with pastry and coffee at Bussia .

Then head over to the Anne Frank House . If you’ve read the book or are just curious, it’s well worth a visit to the Secret Annex.

After a thought-provoking morning, enjoy a delicious and seasonal lunch at Restaurant Klein BREDA where you can choose between a three, four or five-course tasting menu.

Tulip Fever: The New Wave of Leafy Amsterdam Hotels Leading Visitors Off the Beaten Path

By Liam Hess

COLOR FIELD The interior of DenbspDurgerdam.

We may earn a commission if you buy something from any affiliate links on our site.

For a brief time in the Dutch Golden Age, there was one commodity that induced a kind of mania among the residents of the capital’s canals: the humble tulip. (At the height of the bubble, a couple of bulbs could cost as much as some houses in the city.) Sure, today you can nab a few tubers for a handful of euros at the city’s floating flower market—but that hasn’t stopped green-thumbed travelers from assembling every spring to experience tulip fever anew.

A greenhouse at Hortus Botanicus.

A greenhouse at Hortus Botanicus.

It makes sense, then, that a fresh guard of hotels is branching out—quite literally—into Amsterdam’s leafier corners. (Given the city’s efficient trams and 250 miles of bicycle paths, being a little removed is hardly a problem.) Take Pillows Maurits at the Park , the latest hotel from a boutique family-owned group, which opened late in 2022 within a stylishly renovated former university building in the idyllic Oosterpark. As well as offering its very own aviary, the hotel is a mere 15-minute walk from the city’s Hortus Botanicus , one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens. (On a visit last spring, I spent the best part of a morning gazing at the dazzling array of plants that tower under the soaring glass ceilings of its greenhouses.)

If you’re willing to venture even further afield, a historic salon boat, which has been retrofitted with an electric engine, can transport you to the recently opened hotel De Durgerdam , situated in a former fishing village, in less than an hour. (It’s a 15-minute drive, if you’re in a hurry.) There, 14 rooms overlook the dappled gray waters of the IJmeer lake on one side and low-lying farmlands on the other—on a recent winter visit the landscapes revealed themselves through a briny, mirage-like mist. Enter its jewel-box interiors, however, and a different atmosphere is conjured: With its flickering candles and dusky palette, it has all the convivial charm of a picaresque Frans Hals canvas.

A field in Keukenhof outside Amsterdam.

A field in Keukenhof, outside Amsterdam.

Of course, there are plenty of more established Amsterdam stays that will cater to plant-loving pilgrims, such as the sprawling, 93-room Waldorf Astoria , which includes one of the city’s largest private grachtentuinen (or canal gardens). Later this year, an enormous new Rosewood outpost will open with three verdant inner courtyards. Also upcoming: Amstel 111, a new and more centrally located property from the team behind De Durgerdam, whose interiors are set to be crafted by cult New York design duo Roman and Williams with architecture from rising star Frida Escobedo. Let a thousand tulips bloom.
