Tom Cruise's car collection proves he does feel the need, the need for…

By Adam Hay-Nicholls

“I feel the need, the need for speed,” said Tom Cruise in 1986’s Top Gun and he’s set to don Maverick’s black and red helmet once again this winter. Adrenaline has been a component of many of this movie star’s roles since he first hit Hollywood and he famously does his own stunts. But what does he drive when the cameras aren’t rolling? A bit of a mixture it turns out.

Cruise, who turns 58 today, has spent some of his estimated £500 million on aeroplanes, helicopters and motorcycles, but he has a taste for automobiles too. Lifting the mantle from Paul Newman , he has raced stock cars in real life as well as film and lavished love on road cars, fast and slow. A number of his four-wheeled co-stars have ended up in his garage and vice-versa. Sadly, that doesn’t include the Ferrari 250 GTO from Vanilla Sky . It was a fake, anyway (a Datsun 260Z in jaw-dropping drag).

Instead, the Cruise missile has made a habit of buying polite German motors, punchy American metal and one neck-snapping seven-figure hypercar.

Buick Roadmaster (1949)

In 1988, Cruise and Dustin Hoffman were filmed driving from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in a 1949 Buick Roadmaster for Rain Man . Cruise fell in love with the convertible and kept it, and used it off-camera on several cross-country road trips. The flagship Buick was very innovative in its day, with patented VentiPorts to cool the engine and the very first pillarless hardtop. The front grille could be described as “toothy”, and upon the car’s launch journalists joked that an oversized toothbrush needed to be bought separately. Tom, on the other hand, has (nearly) always owned perfect gnashers.

Chevrolet Corvette C1 (1958)

The 1958 Corvette takes pride of place in the Cruiser’s garage. It’s precisely what you’d expect a real-life Maverick to drive. Tom’s first-generation solid-axle 'Vette looks extra classic in two-tone glacier blue and white with silvery blue leather. Despite now being hailed as one of the most beloved pieces of Americana to ever hit the road, early reviews were mixed and sales were disappointing. GM had rushed the car from concept to production, an accusation that cannot be levied at the forthcoming Top Gun: Maverick , which has been ten years in the making.

Chevrolet Chevelle SS (1970)

Another of Tom’s earliest automotive acquisitions was this quintessential V8 muscle car. The SS stood for Super Sport and Cruise’s SS396 packed 350bhp and a power-bulge in the hood. Years later, in 2012, Cruise gave the SS a starring role in Jack Reacher . The Chevelle was a popular body style in Nascar racing in the 1970s, but by the late 1980s and early 1990s it had been replaced by the Chevrolet Lumina in which TC’s character Cole Trickle (possibly related to the stock car series’ curiously christened Dick Trickle) took the chequered flag in Days Of Thunder .

Born not on The Fourth Of July, but on the third in 1962, Thomas Cruise Mapother IV grew up in near poverty in Syracuse, Ottawa and New Jersey. He later described his father as “a merchant of chaos” who used to beat him and his three sisters. Tom, who initially hoped to become a Catholic priest, attended 15 different schools in 14 years, but the two constants were American football and drama class. As a senior, he was the linebacker for the varsity team and starred in Glen Ridge High School’s production of Guys And Dolls . His coming of age ride came in the form of a used Dodge Colt , which might sound like a Detroit-built machine but was in fact manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan. At 18, Cruise jumped in the 1.6 litre compact and headed to New York City to pursue acting and bussing tables. Widely described as a control freak, one imagines getting his hands on his first car gave the actor the independence and confidence he needed to really go after his dreams, even if the vehicle that started him on that journey was rather modest.

Porsche 928 (1979)

Image may contain Tire Wheel Machine Transportation Vehicle Automobile Car Spoke Car Wheel and Alloy Wheel

Tom’s breakthrough movie, Risky Business , was both a fantasy and a horror for teenage boys. On the one hand, our hero had access to his dad’s Porsche and a naked Rebecca De Mornay. On the other, there was Guido the killer pimp and, nightmarishly, the Porsche fell into Lake Michigan by accident. The 928 was originally designed to be the replacement for the 911 . It was less quirky, more luxurious and easier to drive, yet the 911’s appeal endures while the 928 got its P45 in 1995. It remains the company’s only front-mounted V8 coupé. The car from the film sold some years ago for £40,000, but after filming wrapped Cruise went down to his local dealership and got his very own 928, free of damp velour and fish in the footwells.

BMW 3-Series E30 (1983)

Image may contain Windshield Vehicle Transportation Automobile Car Sports Car Coupe Wheel Machine Tire and Spoke

Cruise has been seen sliding around BMW’s i8 , M3 and M5 in recent Mission: Impossibles , but his relationship with the brand goes back to 1983, when he bought a new 3-Series in the wake of supporting roles in Taps and The Outsiders . Both films were packed with fresh talent and Cruise made such an impression that stardom was on the horizon. The E30 was a symbol of ambition; Teutonic transport over-engineered for the yuppie twentysomethings of the 1980s.

Nissan 300ZX SCCA race car (1988)

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Automobile Car Human Person Sports Car Race Car and Motorcycle

Before Days Of Thunder , Cruise had already turned his hand to racing for real. Legendary actor, driver and race team boss Paul Newman had become Tom’s mentor during their time on The Color Of Money, and Old Blue Eyes inspired the young man to apply his copious energies to the track. The result was a season in the SCCA. The SCCA championship stood for Sports Car Club of America, but in 1988 it became known in the paddock as See Cruise Crash Again. Newman-Sharp supplied the red, white and blue No7 Nissan 300ZX and Tom won some races. If he didn’t win, it was usually because he was in the barriers. According to championship rival Roger French, Cruise was way too aggressive: “His attitude was go fast all the time.” It likely didn’t stop Newman offering to be his wingman any time.

Porsche 993 (1996)

Image may contain Car Transportation Vehicle Automobile Tire Spoke Machine Wheel Alloy Wheel and Car Wheel

“Porsche. There is no substitute”. So said Cruise in Risky Business and it’s a mantra he has maintained through the decades. He’s owned several 911 s, but if paparazzi footage is a barometer then the 993 variant is his favourite. It’s ours too; the last of the air-cooled Carreras. Its handling was a major improvement over its predecessor and it was prettier too, thanks to a Yorkshire-born designer named Tony Hatter who, rather than being a mad Hatter, was blessed with taste and civility. The car’s development was overseen by Ulrich Bez (no relation to the Happy Mondays' hype man), a very serious German businessman who later served as Aston Martin’s CEO. Overall, the 993 is a modern classic that’s rapidly appreciating in value, not unlike Cruise’s 1990s output.

Ford Excursion (2000)

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Truck and Pickup Truck

When you’re one of the most famous motion picture stars of all time, it helps to have a car that’s impenetrable to paparazzi lenses. Tom’s stretched and tank-like Ford Excursion is sure to have TMZ leaping out of the way, although it’s understood he often uses it as a decoy. According to the tabloids, this car was actually custom-built on the orders of the Church Of Scientology to protect his ex-wife Katie Holmes when she was pregnant and undergoing a “Purification Rundown” programme. Two-thousand Sea Org man-hours went into electrical modifications, ballistic-proof roof panels, special TC badging and veneer from a eucalyptus tree that once stood in the church’s Gold Base.

Bugatti Veyron (2005)

Image may contain Tire Vehicle Transportation Car Automobile Wheel Machine Human Person Spoke and Alloy Wheel

If you think Dianetics is insane, just check out the Veyron . With nearly 1,000bhp from its 8.0-litre W16, this engineering marvel delivered 253mph upon its introduction in 2005 (later trials have clocked it at 268mph). Tom bought his that same year and, at a cost of £1m, we’d be very disappointed if the salesman didn’t spread his arms wide and yell, “Show me the money!” as the actor signed on the dotted line. Cruise drove it to the premiere of Mission: Impossible III and couldn’t get Katie Holmes’ passenger door to open, which led to some red carpet red faces.

Saleen Mustang S281 (2010)

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Automobile Car Wheel Machine Human Person Sports Car Coupe and Tarmac

American Made muscle seems the right way to go for TC’s garage. The Saleen Mustang S281 boasts up to 550bhp, thanks to the California tuners breathing on Ford’s V8. Pound for pound, few cars deliver such tyre shreddablity for such a modest sum (under £40,000). Cruise uses it for everyday errands, possibly at speeds that would force his passengers’ Eyes Wide Shut .

Tom Cruise has Quite a Car Collection from Classic Muscle to Bugatti

It’s never surprising to see celebrities owning supercars . However, action hero and Hollywood legend Tom Cruise has more than just a collection of exotics. While he’s certainly more familiar with motorcycles , of which he has a vast collection, his car collection is pretty awesome, too. Here are a few of the Mission Impossible star’s rad rides.

Tom Cruise has a Bugatti Veyron he bought brand new

Bugatti Veyron models

It only makes sense for a man larger than life to have something so extraordinary. Having a standard run-of-the-mill Ferrari or Lamborghini would be too boring, right? Instead, he needs over 1,000 horsepower, four turbochargers, and sixteen cylinders. With a top speed of over 250 miles per hour, the Veyron is still one of the fastest cars in the world to this day.

According to Hot Cars , Cruise showcased his new Bugatti purchase at the premiere of Mission Impossible III . Additionally, their article states that Cruise was one of the first to buy the Veyron.

996 Porsche 911

A black 2000 996 Porsche 911 Carrera

In terms of sports cars, the 911 is every bit as iconic as Tom Cruise himself. Though the 996 is often looked down upon as the worst generation 911, it’s definitely been getting its dues lately . Though they are now the most affordable way into a 911, they weren’t affordable new!

Cruise has a black Porsche 911 from the 996 generation and likely purchased it brand new!

In terms of cool factor throughout the Tom Cruise collection, it’s hard to beat this 1958 Corvette. Known as the C1 generation, this is the original Corvette. It was produced from 1953 to 1962. With iconic open-top styling and a V8 under the hood, this is as good as classic Chevrolet gets!

Cruise was once spotted driving the C1 Corvette in LA on his way to a steakhouse dinner with then-wife Katie Holmes. That’s a date with some style!

Saleen S281 Ford Mustang

Tom Cruise owning a Mustang should really come as no surprise. It just seems appropriate. Even more appropriate, though, is the fact that it isn’t just a run-of-the-mill Mustang . It’s a Saleen S281. Saleen takes a standard Mustang, supercharges it, and bumps the power output to 330 horsepower, according to MotorTrend .

Cruise drove a Saleen S281 in Mission Impossible III and displayed his personal car during the premiers for the film in Manhattan.

1949 Buick Roadmaster

1949 Buick Roadmaster in red shot from front end on a forest road

Finally, perhaps the most surprising member of the Tom Cruise collection is a 1949 Buick Roadmaster.

The 1949 Roadmaster has an iconic and outstanding engine under the hood. It’s a 5.7-liter inline eight-cylinder engine that many folks refer to as the “Buick Straight-Eight.” According to Concept Carz, the straight-eight was good for 150 horsepower in its day. Additionally, it made an astounding 280 pound-feet of torque. Very rarely will you see an engine’s torque figure nearly double its horsepower.

Furthermore, the Roadmaster was the first pillarless hardtop vehicle ever built by GM.

Cruise purchased this beautiful lead-sled hunk of American heritage after driving one for his Oscar-winning film Rain Man .

Tom Cruise has a collection that goes on and on

These five cars only scratch the surface of the Tom Cruise collection. He also has a customized Ford Excursion, a Mercedes S Class, and a Mercedes CLK. Additionally, he has a nearly countless collection of motorcycles, too.

Sufficient to say, Tom Cruise is a gear head, and we definitely respect his collection of rides!

Movie Cars That Tom Cruise Can't Get Enough Of

Tom Cruise NASCAR

Tom Cruise's movie career has been varied, with comedies, action movies, and serious dramas all finding a place on his resume. His on- and off-screen relationship with cars is quite the opposite. When he's spotted in the driver's seat, he's usually behind the wheel of something powerful, rare, or classic.

Cruise's success on the screen has left him with a net worth of over $600 million and a personal car collection worth around $2.4 million. That collection includes classics, rare hypercars, and the practical vehicles he uses to get from A to B (via 21 Motoring ). His on-screen vehicle list is even more impressive. It includes Porsches, race cars, and the Folex of the Ferrari world. Cruise is rich enough to comfortably afford almost anything, and the cars he has access to on set are usually pretty amazing, so as you can imagine there has been some overlap between the two. Here's a list of movie cars Cruise has owned, some he may have owned, and one even he probably couldn't get hold of.

1949 Buick Roadmaster from Rain Man

There were two 1949 Buick Roadmasters used during the production of Rain Man, and Tom Cruise owns neither of them. One of the Roadmasters used in the movie was, until recently, part of his co-star Dustin Hoffman's collection. Hoffman recently sold the Roadmaster at Bonham's Scottsdale Auction where it fetched a price of $335,000 including the buyer's premium. Speaking before the sale, Hoffman said: "The Buick's been in storage too long, It should be driven, enjoyed, and cherished." The other Buick Roadmaster featured in Rain Man belongs to the movie's director — Barry Levinson. Levinson described the car as having "third billing" in the movie, saying "it became a character. Dustin, Tom Cruise, and the '49 Buick."

Although Cruise missed out on one of the two Roadmasters used in Rain Man himself, he may have the ability to borrow one, as GQ states he has used the car "off-camera on several cross-country road trips." That said, Gentleman's Quarterly also states that Cruise, "fell in love with the convertible and kept it," and HotCars does the same. This contradicts what Bonham's says about there only being two Rain Man Buicks with one going to Hoffman and the other going to Levinson.

If Cruise does occasionally go cruising in the Roadmaster, it's also unlikely to be Hoffman's as the actor claims he had it stored for decades preceding the sale. MotorBiscuit offers a more plausible explanation, simply stating that the actor liked the car and purchased one independently after filming wrapped. Make of all of that what you will.

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS from Jack Reacher

The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS, or "Super Sport," is a peach of a motor from the golden age of muscle cars. It would be a fantastic addition to anyone's collection, so it's no surprise Tom Cruise has one. Cruise had actually owned the Chevelle SS for a long time before deciding to take it to work and pop it on screen in 2012's Jack Reacher. The Chevvy appears in one of Jack Reacher's most iconic chase scenes, where Cruise is trying to escape a good number of law enforcement officers ( via GQ ).

The Top Gun actor's Chevrolet Chevelle SS has a 450-horsepower V8 engine at its disposal and is capable of going from 0-60 in six seconds. In 1970, the Chevelle SS engine had the highest factory horsepower rating of any production model on record. That isn't as fast as Cruise's Bugatti Veyron , but you have to take into account the fact the Chevelle SS is over 50 years old and weighs just under 4,000 pounds (via Newport Car Museum ). Fewer than 4,500 Chevrolet Chevelle SS models were manufactured in 1970, so if you come across one in a barn you've found something special. If you come across one in an auction house, you may have to remortgage your home.

The Chevy Lumina from Days of Thunder

Cruise is a huge racing enthusiast, and the NASCAR-centric movie Days of Thunder was one of the early successes that helped springboard him into the big time. During the movie, the action star was racing a Lumina, which is a line Chevrolet ran from 1989 to 2013. The stock version of the Lumina wasn't that impressive, especially compared to other vehicles on this list. Its 3.4-liter V6 produced 213 horsepower (though there was a 3.1-liter, 160-horsepower version). It had five seats, and it would get around 20 miles to the gallon (via Auto-Data ). The actual racing version was a touch more impressive, with 650 horsepower on offer. Like a lot of movie cars, especially those used in action sequences, several Luminas will have been used during the production of Days of Thunder, and some may have been totally destroyed. One did show up in Florida and was subsequently sold.

Motorbiscuit's HJ Pizzaro tried to track an actual Lumina Cruise drove in Days of Thunder down, but didn't have much success. He does, however, acknowledge the possibility it may be a part of Cruise's collection. Pizzaro may have a point. Cruise had a solid interest in racing, and Days of Thunder was a large part of his early acting success. The iconic Lumina spending its days comfortably nestled under a tarp in one of Cruise's garages is also a more comforting thought than it rusting away on a scrap heap somewhere with no one knowing how famous it used to be.

The Ferrari 250 GTO from Vanilla Sky

This is a very rare, very collectible, car that Tom Cruise doesn't have, and surprisingly the movie it appeared in didn't even have one, either. It's the Ferrari 250 GTO, a stunning red coupe from the early 1960s. The trouble is, Ferraris are incredibly expensive to begin with, and only 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs were ever produced. The scarcity means that when they do come up for sale, prices can be expected to hover around the $50 million mark, and even that may be a low estimate. An example sold by R M Sotheby's in 2018 sold for over $48 million — and everything, including classic cars, has gotten a lot more expensive since then. There is a remote possibility of renting one, but the insurance bill alone would probably cost more than most hypercars, never mind the stack of cash you'd need to trust your most prized possession to a Hollywood production. Hollywood blows nice cars up all the time.

The price means if Cruise were to buy one, it would be worth about 20 times the value of his current car collection, and just shy of 10% of his total net worth. It may have also priced the producers of Vanilla Sky out, as despite what you may think you saw, there was no Ferrari 250 GTO in that movie. What Cruise was actually driving was a far cheaper 1976 Datsun 260Z with some heavy modifications to its bodywork, a new engine, and a nicer interior (via Drive.com ). Despite intensive research, we have not been able to confirm whether or not Tom Cruise's car collection currently contains a Datsun — though the "Alpha One" from Vanilla Sky did go to auction in 2019 .

1983 Porsche 928 from Risky Business

Less famous than the 911, but still eye-catching, is the Porsche 928 that Tom Cruise found himself behind the wheel of in Risky Business. Although he would eventually own one of his own in real life, Joel (the character he played in the movie) didn't. He decided to "borrow" his wealthy dad's expensive German sports car while both of his parents were out of town. The 928 was originally intended to replace the 911 — but it turns out the 928 was "no substitute" for the 911, as Porsche stopped making the 928 in the mid-90s while we still get new 911s to this day. However, the 928 was a very good Porsche. Its V8 produced 300 horsepower, which is a lot considering the state of motoring at the back end of the 1970s US oil crisis. It was certainly enough to get Cruise away from an angry pimp with some bad intentions.

According to GQ, Cruise didn't get to keep the 928 he plowed into a lake during the movie. He did, however, go out and buy a drier version himself shortly after filming wrapped. One of the movie's 928s that avoided the lake and was actually quite well preserved sold to a private collector for $1.9 million.

In the mid-noughties, Tom Cruise dropped a hefty $2 million on a Bugatti Veyron.

The euphoria of driving a 1,000 hp hypercar didn’t last long, though, as he got blacklisted by the luxury manufacturer soon after.

Apparently, an incident occured when he took the “beast of the road” for a ride to his Mission: Impossible III premiere.

According to The Sun , he had no idea how to open the door, and it took him several tries before he managed to open the handle to let his now ex-wife Katie Holmes out of the passenger seat.

Of course, the whole thing was captured by dozens of paparazzi, and it became a major embarrassment for Bugatti.

The incident allegedly led to Cruise being added to the brand’s blacklist, preventing him from purchasing another Bugatti in the future.

After more than 40 years in Hollywood, Tom Cruise is still one of the biggest movie stars in the business.

Always at the centre of the action, Tom is famed for performing his own stunts in most of his blockbuster films.

Tom Cruise with his Ford Mustang Saleen sports car

Whether it’s daredevil parachute dives or piloting planes and helicopters in terrifying-looking adventures, Mr Cruise likes to roll up his sleeves and get involved.

His roles in flicks such as Days of Thunder and Mission: Impossible have also thrown in some pretty serious driving scenes - and it’s possibly here where he developed a taste for performance cars.

A cool collection of expensive and often rare machinery is easily a match for other action stars such as Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio , although Mr Cruise did have a strange encounter with Bugatti which led to a bit of a stand-off developing between the two big names, which we’ll cover a bit later.

For now, read on and check out 5 cars in Tom Cruise’s awesome collection.

1. 1958 Chevrolet Corvette C1

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in a Chevrolet Corvette C1

Just a stunning-looking sports car from the 1950s/60s, the Corvette C1 was the first-generation model and came as a drop-top which made things even cooler.

Most were fitted with booming V8 engines and prices are now rising - with the very best examples fetching hundreds of thousands.

2. 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

The Chevrolet Chevelle SS is a powerful beast of a car

Tom bought a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS before he made it to superstardom, and interestingly the car also features in the Jack Reacher movie. According to automotive site carhp.com , the car cost around $32,000.

With a big 6.5-litre V8 engine and Tom’s name on the owner’s document, it’s safe to say that it would probably go for a lot more at auction today.

3. 2010 Ford Mustang Saleen S281

Tom Cruise in his Mustang Saleen sports car

America is famous for taking old-school muscle cars and making them even more powerful and quicker in a straight line. Saleen tinkered with the 4.6-litre V8 engine to help it produce around 485hp - enough power for it to sprint from 0-62mph in under 4 seconds. Tom’s model, of course, came with bright orange paintwork, to help stand out a little more.

4. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

A chauffeured Mercedes S-Class for Mr Cruise

The Mercedes S-Class is just choc full of luxurious touches, so it’s no surprise that Mr Cruise bought himself a model - one that cost more than $100,000. He wasn’t often seen driving it himself, though - that was the chauffeur’s job.

5. 2005 Bugatti Veyron

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes at the 'Mission: Impossible 3' Fan Screening

Paying nearly $2million for a piece of motoring history, Tom acquired the 1000hp hypercar in the mid-noughties.

According to carhp.com , the strange thing is that the manufacturer actually banned Tom from buying any other Bugatti model again.

Why? Well, apparently, Mr Cruise drove his wife, Katie Holmes, in the Bugatti to the premiere of his film Mission Impossible 3.

With several hits up in his sleeve, Tom Cruise has gained quite a stardom in his lifetime. The man hasn’t stopped yet, for he already has some action-packed movies up in his future kitty. The actor is also known for his love for speed, which is evident from the cool choices of cars and motorcycles he is seen in his movies.

Unlike other celebrities who are seen buying flashy new offerings, Tom Cruise has a good collection of premium cars and some antique ones, some of which have made their appearances in his movies. Following are some of the cool cars owned by Tom Cruise:

Bugatti Veyron

This car needs no introduction, for it held the record of the fastest production car in the world for quite a long time. Tom Cruise owns a black-coloured Bugatti Veyron, which he drove to the premiere of Mission impossible III. The Veyron owned by him is the 16.4 version, which is powered by a massive 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 petrol engine. With a maximum power output of 1001 bhp and a maximum torque output of 1250 Nm, the Veyron hits a top speed of an incredible 415 kmph. The car is also capable of hitting 100 kmph from a standstill in 2.5 seconds.

Buick Roadmaster

Tom Cruise fell in love with the beige-coloured 1949 Buick Roadmaster while shooting for the Oscar-winning movie, Rain Man. Such was the appreciation for the Roadmaster, that Cruise ended up buying the classy looking two-door open-top car. The Buick Roadmaster is one of the most beautiful looking retro cars in Tom Cruise’s garage and is powered by a 5.2-litre V8 engine. The engine makes a maximum power output of 150 bhp and a peak torque output of 379 Nm, which are much lower figures for a present-day V8 engine.

BMW 3-Series E30

BMW has had a long association with the Mission Impossible franchise which gave Tom Cruise iconic stardom. However, before Cruise was seen in swanky M3, M5 and i8 in the MI franchise, the Hollywood actor had got himself a third-generation BMW 3-series, which was popularly known as E30. This is one car he acquired in his early days of stardom. The BMW 3-Series E30 was available between 1982-1990 and was offered with a host of engines ranging from 1.6-litre to 2.7-litre. However, it is not clear which version of the E30 was bought by Tom Cruise.

Ford Mustang Saleen S281

Ford Mustang Saleen S281 Tom Cruise

While the Ford Mustang is a car for commoners in the United States, Tom Cruise was impressed with the Mustang Saleen S281, which he drove while filming for a movie. The Ford Mustang Saleen S281 was a limited edition model, the production of which was restricted to just 100 units and was tuned by California-based Saleen Automotive. This two-door sports coupe has a 4.6-litre two-valve V8 petrol engine, which has been tuned to produce a whopping 550 bhp of maximum power output.

Chevrolet Chevelle SS

The red-coloured Chevrolet Chevelle SS owned by Tom Cruise is the oldest car in his current collection and was bought by him much before he became the great superstar which he is today. Such was the fondness with the Chevelle SS that he drove it in a few scenes in one of his movies in the Jack Reacher series. The Chevelle SS from the late sixties is a quintessential American muscle car, which has a long profile and is powered by an equally huge 6.8-litre V8 engine, which produces a maximum power output of 370 bhp.

Porsche 911

Tom Cruise has owned several Porsche 911s to date, and the one model which he admires the most out of all the 911s is the 993 variant. This two-door sports coupe was the first-ever Porsche model to feature a 6-speed gearbox and was brought in as the replacement of the 964 variant. It was a much-improved model over its predecessor version and came with a 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine capable of producing a maximum power output of 402 bhp.

Chevrolet Corvette C1

Chevrolet Corvette C1 tom cruise

The Corvette C1 was the first-ever model in the Corvette line of sports coupe from the American carmaker, and Tom Cruise owns a stunning blue-coloured 1958 model of the same. The beautiful looking two-door Chevrolet Corvette C1 is powered by a 4.6-litre small-block V8 petrol engine, which produces 290 bhp of maximum power output, which was quite high for its time. The major design highlights of the 1958 Chevrolet Corvette C1 are the faux-louvred hood with quad-headlamp setup and chrome trunk spears. It was the first model to feature a tachometer in the instrument console and factory-fitted seat belts.

Mercedes Benz S-Class

Mercedes Benz S-Class tom cruise

Almost everyone aspires to be seen in a Mercedes Benz S-Class, including all the prominent celebrities and even the world leaders. The Mercedes Benz S-Class is widely accepted as the world’s best car and is one of the first choices of film celebrities for its status quo. Tom Cruise owns a fifth-generation W221 series Mercedes Benz S-Class in a shade of black, which was the best most technically advanced full-size luxury saloon of its times. This version of the S-Class was available in a host of engine options, including a range-topping V12 petrol engine, though it is not clear which version of the car is owned by Cruise.

Ford Excursion

When the Ford Excursion was launched in 1999, it was the largest production SUV of its time. Based on the F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, this full-size SUV was brought in as a luxurious SUV for the rich men, and Tom Cruise also ended up buying one in an authoritative shade of black. This huge SUV was in the news when Tom Cruise managed to divert the attention of the paparazzi while he was expecting his first child with the-then wife Katey Holmes. The 5.4-litre Triton V8 petrol engine of the Ford Excursion pumps out 255 bhp of maximum power and 475 Nm of maximum torque.

Mercedes Benz CLK

The black-coloured Mercedes Benz CLK owned by Tom Cruise is one of the most successful two-door convertible cars in the history of the German carmaker. The Hollywood actor owns an A209 version of the CLK, which was the second generation version of the car. Cruise owns the 5.0-litre V8 variant of the Mercedes Benz CLK, which claims a maximum power output of 302 bhp and a maximum torque output of 339 Nm. The Time ‘The Sopranos’ Became a Horror Show

HBO's hit TV show was never afraid to dive into horror.

The Big Picture

  • Death and guilt haunt Tony Soprano in The Sopranos , transforming his inner turmoil into frightening nightmares and ghostly encounters.
  • Season 4's "Calling All Cars" is the most intense episode with chilling dreams, horrifying imagery, and haunting symbolism.
  • The combination of psychological horror and mob drama in The Sopranos makes Tony's deepest fears and anxieties come to life.

The Sopranos , which ran on HBO from 1999-2007 , is one of the darkest dramas ever made, but while the tales of Tony Soprano ( James Gandolfini ) and company are riveting, it's not a horror series per se. Still, it's impossible for this mob show to not have horror elements as death is at the center of The Sopranos . If someone's not getting whacked, the characters are preparing themselves for the possibility. Heck, seventeen years after it aired, we're still debating whether Tony died or not when everything suddenly went to black during the divisive finale. The Sopranos has some scary moments , but none of them match the frightening intensity of Season 4's "Calling All Cars" , when Tony has a dream that leaves not only him but the audience shaken.

The Sopranos

New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano deals with personal and professional issues in his home and business life that affect his mental state, leading him to seek professional psychiatric counseling.

There Are Many Nods to Horror in 'The Sopranos'

With death being so engrained in The Sopranos , it's going to effect how its characters and the series itself broaches the subject of guilt and the feeling of impending doom. The death of Tony's Mother, Livia ( Nancy Marchand ) , in Season 3 provides some of those terrifying glimpses into the unknown . Livia was a domineering woman, but her passing brings no reprieve. Following her death, her grandson, A.J. ( Robert Iler ), is home all alone, when he thinks he hears his grandmother and calls out to her. In another episode, when Tony Soprano is in a coma, he sees the shadow of his mother in a doorway in a chilling image . When Big Pussy ( Vincent Pastore ) is whacked , we later see his reflection ever so briefly at Livia's wake.

Livia's death is not the only one that haunts The Sopranos . Christopher Moltisani ( Michael Imperioli ) has a recurring nightmare where he's visited by the ghost of a man he killed. It's Tony, however, who is tormented the most by his dark and violent life . The Sopranos is not just a clone of other mob movies and shows, but one where inner turmoil is at its center. That clever premise, of a powerful man in the mob having panic attacks that force him to see a therapist is what drew viewers in to begin with, making our bad guy hero someone we could sympathize with and come to love.

During Season 1, Tony is so afraid that the people in his life will find out that he's seeing a therapist that he dreams of them watching him during a session. That same season, Tony, a man who has often cheated on his wife, Carmela ( Edie Falco ), dreams of having an affair with his therapist, Dr. Melfi ( Lorraine Bracco ) . After killing Christopher in Season 6, Tony's sleeping mind has him confessing all to her. In Season 2, he dreams of killing his close associate, Paulie ( Tony Sirco ) . When Tony finds out that Big Pussy is an FBI informant, he dreams of a fish talking to him in his betraying friend's voice. It's Tony's side relationships with other women who always haunt him the most. When a mistress, Gloria ( Annabella Sciorra ), falls for him, Tony angrily tells her to stay away from him. She is so broken by this that Gloria ends up taking her own life, leading to another nightmare to taunt our hero. All of these ghosts and dreams are tense and sometimes frightening, but none of them can match the dream Tony has in Season 4's "Calling All Cars", when those he killed, those he feels guilt over, and his mother all come to haunt him at once .

In "Calling All Cars", Tony Soprano Is Forced To Confront His Ghosts

"Calling All Cars" starts out in Tony's dream. In it, he's a backseat passenger in his father's Cadillac . A rosary bead is wrapped around the rearview mirror and Ralphie ( Joe Pantialano ), who Tony had to kill , sits in the passenger seat, a caterpillar crawling across his bald head. He turns on the radio, where the news is playing, but it's nothing more than a cacophony of screams, gunshots, and sirens. Ralphie leans over and whispers something unheard to Carmela, who is behind the wheel, while Tony looks on, his face drained of emotion. A voice calls out, asking "You wanna take it for a test drive?" Tony looks over beside him to see Gloria, the car saleswoman mistress Tony drove to suicide when he rejected her. As the caterpillar on Ralphie's head turns into a butterfly, he and Carmela turn to look at Tony wordlessly. Beside him, Gloria is gone, replaced by Svetlana ( Alla Kliouka Schaffer ), another former mistress who Carmela left him over . As she smiles at him, Tony wakes up in bed next to his wife.

"Calling All Cars" is bookended by dreams, ending with Tony following Ralphie, who says nothing to him, through a grassy field. Suddenly, Ralphie is gone and Tony is dressed in a dirty, sweaty shirt and suspenders. He knocks on the door of a large house and calls out in the voice of an Italian immigrant, saying, "Hello, I'm here for the masonry job." As he looks through the screen door into the dark home, a figure enveloped in shadows, who looks very much like his mother, walks down the steps and stops halfway . He speaks to her, and when she doesn't move or answer, he opens the door and walks inside, before waking up gasping for air.

HBO Paid James Gandolfini to Not Star in 'The Office'

Dr. melfi interprets what tony soprano's dream means.

When Tony sees Dr. Melfi after the first dream, he tells her about it. He says, "I don't know where we were going, because we didn't seem to get anywhere, kind of like this therapy." Dr. Melfi sees Carmela being in control during the dream, with Tony wanting to square things up with her over Ralphie and Gloria . Tony responds in defensive anger, attacking the therapy, rather than trying to find solutions. We know how much deeper the story is for those too than Melfi does, so is Tony wanting to tell his wife what happened to them, and to make peace with her? His anger certainly shows that he is far from any peace, and the ravages of guilt over Ralphie and other women , along with insecurities brought by a mother who couldn't love him properly, are destroying him.

Where other genres feel compelled to tell us more about why something is happening, the best horror uses haunting and shocking imagery through paralyzing dreams, where we are completely vulnerable and lacking any control, to say so much. The more unsettling, the better, for imagery that we can't comprehend will always put us on edge. The presence of Ralphie and Gloria are like ghosts , with Tony's own mind as the haunted house where they shake their chains and go bump in the night. The transformation on Ralphie's bald head, the bad toupee removed, shows how he has been transformed by death, with creepy crawly bugs, which elicit fear in so many horror movies, more effective than the sight of a rotting corpse. The scariest moment of all is the appearance of Livia on the steps, an apparition who does not move or speak . Is her presence there to heal, or is to hurt, like a demon possessing her broken son's soul? Death and horror go hand in hand, as does death and The Sopranos . No moment shows it better than this one.

All episodes of The Sopranos are available to stream on Max in the U.S.

22 Triumph Thruxton

Edge of Tomorrow is arguably an awful action flick, yet Tom Cruise still got paid. And he got to ride a Triumph Thruxton. In fact, when all of the equipment was shipped, Cruise picked up the Thruxton and rode it himself back to the set.

The 865cc bike has a top speed of 115 MPH, plenty fast to do all the crazy stunts! Featuring a four-stroke parallel twin-cylinder engine, the Thruxton can make 69 horsepower, and the iconic Triumph styling makes it one of the most incredible bikes Cruise has driven on or off set.

21 Vyrus 987 C3 4V

Tom Cruise owns the most powerful and most expensive production motorcycle globally. The cost of this motorcycle is estimated to be around $103,769. Cruise was seen speeding away on his Vyrus from his 51st birthday.

He rode his flashy motorcycle and made a dramatic exit from the Hotel Chateau Marmont. It is a chopper made by an Italian manufacturer and powered by a 1.2-liter engine. It is a lightweight motorcycle that weighs around 154 kgs. It can hit a high speed of 209mph. Despite being fast, it is stable, making it safe and secure.

20 Kawasaki GPZ900R

Top Gun is one of Tom Cruise's most famous films . In it, he rides a Kawasaki GBZ900 and performs stunts with it. A couple of months ago, the star actor Tom Cruise posted a picture of his Kawasaki bike for the Top Gun 2 movie. He was also spotted on an airfield driving the Kawasaki Ninja H2R. The Kawasaki GPZ900 used in Top Gun was replaced by the Kawasaki Ninja H2R in the sequel.

This is a middleweight motorcycle with a 998cc engine with a maximum power of 322bhp. The top speed of this bike is 248mph.

19 Ducati 999R

Ducati is always on the top of the list when it comes to celebrity motorcycle collections. Cruise got himself a grey color Ducati 999R for his 46th birthday. He was spotted cruising with his Ducati 999R in LA, where he almost ran into a tree. His Ducati 999R was one of the 200 units that were ever manufactured.

The top speed of this Ducati 999R is estimated to be around 179mph. It was one of the most potent bikes ever built and claimed positive reviews from bike enthusiasts. This sporty bike was specially designed for racing purposes. It has a 6-speed gearbox.

18 BMW S1000 RR

Michael Dunlop, a bike racer, won many races and championships with this bike making it iconic for BMW. It is one of the most potent, stable, and dependable bikes in the world. The production started off with 1,000 units, but that number increased to meet commercial demand.

17 Confederate Hellcat

Tom Cruise’s passion for bikes led to him giving a dramatic entry on his Confederate Hellcat for the premiere of Mission Impossible 3 . The Hellcat is known for its unique design. This bike is well ahead of its time. This bike has a special place in the hearts of bike enthusiasts.

M.S.Dhoni also owns this Confederate Hellcat, powered by a 2.2-liter engine that makes 121hp. The bike is mighty and stable compared to other bikes on the market. The cost of this bike is estimated to be around $65,000.

16 Honda CRF450X

Launched in 2015, this was a redesigned version of the Honda 450 model. It had a four-valve engine, single-cylinder, and four-stroke 449cc engine. The weight of this bike is around 110kgs. It has 5-speed transmissions. Cruise drove this bike in the movie Oblivion, and it featured a futuristic design for the film.

Unlike Cruise himself, who performs most of his own onscreen stunts, the bike is simply present in the film to showcase the design and is not involved with any notable performances. The top speed of this futuristic bike is estimated to be around 105mph.

15 BMW R nine T Scrambler

In his recent movie Mission Impossible: Fallout, Tom Cruise rides a BMW R nine T Scrambler. In this movie, he is seen racing with a brand new R nine T Scrambler until he crashes it. (Oops, spoilers.) The BMW R nine T Scrambler has a powerful 1170cc engine.

The seating position of this motorcycle is perfect and helps him glide along the road. The 55-year-old actor seems to be enjoying doing stunts and racing with this fantastic bike. It is not just a rugged bike but a legend. This bike can hit a top speed of 124mph.

14 Ducati Desmosedici RR

Ducati Desmosedici was a symbol of both pride and passion for motorcycle lovers . Back in 2008, Cruise was spotted sharing a ride on this rare bike with Cameron Diaz, his co-star from the famous movie Knight and Day . The Desmosedici was a limited edition motorcycle and was one among 1,500 units that were built. It had a powerful 800cc V4 engine that could hit a top speed of 200mph. The price of a Desmosedici was estimated to be around $72,500.

13 Triumph Speed Triple
