Biography [ ]

Escaping from krall [ ].

Years prior to her encounter with the USS Enterprise crew, Jaylah and her family , like many before them, were attacked by Krall and imprisoned on Altamid. Jaylah and her family quickly realized that people were routinely taken from Krall's holding cells and killed, so they decided to attempt escape. During the attempt, Jaylah and her father were confronted by Krall's subordinate Manas . Jaylah's father stayed behind to hold off Manas, buying Jaylah time to flee at the cost of his own life.

Jaylah on the Franklin

Jaylah discovered the derelict hulk of the Freedom -class USS Franklin and made her home in it. She hid it using holographic technology and set up multiple defensive traps in the surrounding area. Inside the vessel, she discovered a music player, from which she particularly liked music featuring "beats and shouting". She also learned how to speak English from the ship's records. In time, Jaylah became a formidable warrior, skilled in martial arts and in wielding a quarterstaff that doubled as a rifle . ( Star Trek Beyond )

Alliance with the Enterprise crew [ ]

Scott meets Jaylah

Jaylah holds Montgomery Scott at knife point

Jaylah became a scavenger to obtain parts with which to repair the Franklin and leave Altamid. In 2263 , she came across Montgomery Scott , who had recently escaped the Enterprise inside an advanced long-range torpedo , and saved him from three rival scavengers. Realizing Scott was an engineer , Jaylah agreed to help him find his crew if he helped her finish her repairs.

One of Jaylah's traps was subsequently tripped by Captain James T. Kirk and Ensign Pavel Chekov . After Scott assured Jaylah the newcomers were his friends, she set them free. Using a transporter aboard the Franklin , Jaylah and her new allies then managed to bring Spock and Leonard McCoy to them. The group formulated a plan to rescue the rest of the crew and stop Krall from launching an attack on Starbase Yorktown . Jaylah initially refused to participate, revealing her traumatic history with Krall, but Scott convinced her they had a chance if they worked together.

Spock, Jaylah, and McCoy

Jaylah accompanies Spock and McCoy to rescue the Enterprise crew

Jaylah showed the Enterprise crew a makeshift map of Krall's base and explained her own escape method, allowing them to devise a rescue plan. As part of the plan, Jaylah and Kirk, riding a PX70 motorcycle , beamed in near the tunnel Jaylah had used to escape and she dismounted once near the inside of the base. While Kirk used the motorcycle, enhanced with Jaylah's traps and holographic technology to create a distraction, Jaylah used a pulse beacon to enable McCoy and Spock to beam directly to the base. She directed the two to the crew's holding pen, then laid down covering fire for Kirk, before being attacked by Manas . The two fought, but neither was able to overpower the other, and an aggravated Jaylah screamed at Manas during the fight. The battle ended with Jaylah on a roof with Manas, and her pulse beacon on the ground below. At a signal from Kirk, Jaylah threw herself and Manas off of the roof, moments before Kirk caught her, resulting in them beaming back to the Franklin together.

Jaylah and Scott help save Yorktown

Jaylah and Scott monitor Kirk at Yorktown Headquarters

After witnessing Krall launching his Swarm ships , Jaylah aided the Enterprise crew in repairing the Franklin for takeoff. She joined the crew in returning to Yorktown, where they found Krall attacking . Jaylah referred to the Swarm ships as " bees ", which inspired Spock to realize that the craft must have a cyberpathic connection, and he beamed over with McCoy to find it. After having studied the connection, the crew came up with the idea to use Jaylah's music player to broadcast a disruptive signal into the Swarm ships in order to destroy them. Jaylah aided Scott in setting up the signal and chose the song " Sabotage " for them to use. After the Swarm ships were destroyed, Kirk sent Jaylah and Scott to Yorktown Headquarters to shut off the atmospheric processor and stop Krall from using the Abronath to murder everyone on the starbase . ( Star Trek Beyond )

An invitation to join Starfleet [ ]

Jaylah accepted at the Academy

Kirk and Scott offer Jaylah entrance into Starfleet Academy

Jaylah joined the Enterprise crew in celebrating Kirk's thirtieth birthday with a party on Yorktown, where she consumed a large number of alcoholic beverages to no apparent effect. She was delighted to hear from Scott that, on his recommendation, she had been accepted into Starfleet Academy . However, she was annoyed to hear she would have to wear a uniform if she chose to attend the institution. Kirk also advised Jaylah that while there were many rules at the Academy, she shouldn't follow them all. ( Star Trek Beyond )

Background information [ ], identity [ ].

Jaylah was portrayed by Sofia Boutella .

The character of Jaylah was created in an effort to increase the female quotient in the main cast of Star Trek Beyond . When Simon Pegg and Doug Jung were writing the film , they took inspiration for depicting Jaylah from Ree Dolly, Jennifer Lawrence 's character in the film Winter's Bone . Pegg later explained, " Doug and I and [Director] Justin [Lin] , in the writing room, wanted to create this very independent female, very resourceful character on the Altamid surface. " However, thinking up a name for the new Star Trek character was a struggle. The writing team began calling her "Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone " but that understandably became too unwieldy, due to the length of the name. " It started to get tiring, always saying, 'Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone ,' " said Pegg. " It's a long name! So then we started calling her 'J-Law'. " [1] That shortened form was suggested as a joke but caught on, before the name ultimately changed to "Jaylah". Despite the inspiration, Doug Jung, with a laugh, described the connection between Jennifer Lawrence and Jaylah as "so esoteric." Of the latter, he added, " Phonetically, it sounded good – 'Jaylah.' It sounded a little foreign. " [2]

Regarding how Jaylah's persona was invented, Doug Jung stated, " We wanted her character to be someone who was outside of the understanding of the Federation and what it means, and really, to really be a blank slate in the sense that she has no real understanding even of her own people, in a way [....] We thought it would be nice to have a character who can feel the full effect of what it means to be a part of this Federation and this group of people. To adopt their sort of unifying way in which they look at who they are. " [3] Justin Lin agreed, " I knew if we did it right, it would be great to have a new character who could potentially join the family. " ( Empire , issue 326, p. 76)

Jaylah sculpture

A sculpture of Jaylah that served as a basis for her make-up design

Jaylah's make-up was designed by make-up designer and make-up effects supervisor Joel Harlow in collaboration with a team led by Neville Page . The group aimed to make the character's make-up "instantly iconic," which Harlow felt was most important, as well as "instantly recognizable." ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 81) There were, though, multiple goals that drove the process of designing Jaylah's make-up and costumes. Costume Designer Sanja Hays offered, " She's an alien woman who needed to look interesting, and strange, but also heroic. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 41) Sofia Boutella asked Hays to add heels to Jaylah's boots, so her height difference to the rest of the cast would not be a problem. [4]

As it turned out, the design direction for Jaylah's make-up was suggested by neither Joel Harlow nor Neville Page. " That pale skin, black strip look came from Joe Pepe , who is one of Neville's designers, " Harlow divulged. " It was something Justin [Lin] gravitated towards during one of the meetings. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 81) A character design by Neville Page and a clay sculpture by Richard Alonzo served as the basis for Jaylah's prosthetic make-up, which was created by Joel Harlow. ( Cinefex , No. 148, pp. 85 & 88)

Adapting the selected chromatic facial design into a make-up scheme, however, involved many hurdles, such as making the black lines look the same every time they were applied, on each day of the film's considerably long production period. ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 81) " The black lines were done sculpturally [on a pretty thin forehead appliance], " Joel Harlow remembered. " It would have been a nightmare to maintain those lines every day, even using a template, so I had the idea of making them slightly raised – that way, we knew exactly where they were. " ( Cinefex , No. 148, p. 88) Jaylah's make-up was labor-intensive not only due to the effort required to apply the paint, but also because a particular shade of white first had to be selected for the skin color, which called for some trial and error. Ironically, the color that was eventually picked wasn't even truly white. Using a pure white color would have made Jaylah look "clown-like." Instead, a multitude of pale colors was used. This combination gave an overall impression of white because the adjacent black lines were colorized with an absolute shade of black. Applying the various pale shades in different orders would produce slightly different appearances. Harlow said about the pale mix, " In order to make it look like skin, we [had] to break it up as you would a traditional prosthetic. There was a lot of experimentation for what that color combination would be and in what order those colors would be applied. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 81)

Jaylah's make-up incorporated a pair of contact lenses and some extremely subtle prosthetics, too. Representing ridges near Jaylah's eyes, the prosthetics stretched from the actress' nose to her forehead. However, the entire bottom part of the face was the actress' own skin, not covered at all by prosthetics. ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 70)

The white-and-black motif was designed to extend into Jaylah's hair. Thus, there needed to be a seamless transition between the actress' smooth skin, the prosthetic piece, and a custom wig tied by Wigmaker Khanh Trance . " It was important that her skin tone blended into her hair color, " said Joel Harlow. " Sonya Hayes, the costume designer, had the idea of raising the ridges between the black lines, which made it all work. I [subtly] airbrushed the black into the recessed areas, continuing the lines and fading it out. " ( Cinefex , No. 148, p. 89)

The make-up of Jaylah boosted the production staff's confidence in the character. " As soon as we saw the makeup effects they were going to use, we knew it was going to be great, " Doug Jung reminisced. [5]

Multiple concept sketches of Jaylah can be seen at Trekcore. [6] [7]

Casting [ ]

When she first auditioned for the role of Jaylah, Sofia Boutella had no idea what character she would be playing, nor in what film. " It wasn't until the callback that they told me it was Star Trek , and what character I was playing, " she recalled. " Then they took me to the make-up trailer and said, 'This is what you're going to look like.' And I was like, 'Holy shit.' " ( Empire , issue 326, p. 76) Boutella, who had never done any prosthetics work before, elaborated, " At first, when I had the make-up put on me, I thought, 'what remarkable work.' I've never seen anything like it. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 70)

The prospect of casting Boutella as Jaylah immediately seemed right to Justin Lin. " I knew as soon as I saw her, " he recollected. ( Empire , issue 326, p. 76)

Boutella approved of the role, not only because she thought being in Star Trek would be "a great opportunity" for her but also thanks to Jaylah's newness. " I was attracted to this character, because she's an alien, and she's a completely original character in the Star Trek universe, so I don't have to compare myself with anyone who came before me. I am Jaylah, " the actress attested. ( SFX , issue 276, p. 49)

Performance [ ]

Sofia Boutella and Justin Lin

Jaylah actress Sofia Boutella receiving direction from Justin Lin

The casting choice of Sofia Boutella influenced the depiction of Jaylah to an extraordinary extent. " Usually when you're writing you try to find someone to fit [what you've written], but I started crafting the character to Sofia's strengths, " stated Justin Lin. " I wanted someone who when you meet them has this strength, but you realize it might be a mask. " ( Empire , issue 326, p. 76)

Though she had never seen a Star Trek film before she was cast as Jaylah, Sofia Boutella watched all the movies once she was given the part and, during production on Star Trek Beyond , she relied on the advice of Justin Lin, a longtime Star Trek fan . " This is why it's so much fun to be creating an original character like Jaylah, " she enthused. ( SFX , issue 276, p. 49)

Sofia Boutella found the most difficult aspect of playing Jaylah was the character's make-up. " This is not a CG -created character; I spent four hours in make-up every morning, " she noted. ( SFX , issue 276, p. 49) Boutella additionally related, " There were days where I'd wake up at 12:30am to get make-up before a morning shoot. It's a long but fun process. " The actress found the make-up and the lengthy durations it took to be applied helped her get into character. [8] " When I put on the prosthetic, and saw myself in the mirror, " she recalled, " it instantly put me into the character, this alien warrior, along with holding her main weapon, which looks like a stick and which she is very skilled with. " ( SFX , issue 276, p. 49) Boutella also got used to the make-up. " The more I had the prosthetic on, it was harder to imagine Jaylah without it on. There's weight to it, even if it wasn't that much, and the ponytail has a certain weight [and feel] [....] It would be difficult to play Jaylah without all that going on. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 70)

Jaylah's fighting style is dance-like because Sofia Boutella trained as a dancer. ( Empire , issue 326, p. 76) " So, she was very up for, you know, the physicality of it, " Simon Pegg added. [9] Indeed, Boutella found her experience as a physical artist was of full benefit to her portrayal of Jaylah. " It was very helpful to use my dancing ability, and what I've learned as a dancer, to execute everything that was required of me, " she explained. " I definitely used some of my old tricks, my body language, or treating things as a choreography, or looking at things with a rhythm so I could learn them. " Boutella certainly found her dance background helped her with her fight training for Star Trek Beyond . She also used it to try to make Jaylah's presence seem particularly alien, for example being conscious of how she moved, sat and walked while playing the character. To participate specifically in the film's fight scenes as Jaylah, Boutella trained in parkour and bōjutsu . " It was a lot of fun to learn [parkour], to be honest, " she admitted, " though at first I said 'I'm never going to be able to do this,' because it's quite hard. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , pp. 70 & 72)

Jaylah scream recording

Watched by Justin Lin, Sofia Boutella records Jaylah's scream

Simon Pegg deliberately wrote Jaylah's dialogue in a broken English that was inspired by Sofia Boutella's French accent. ( Empire , issue 326, p. 76) Jaylah's way of speaking also referenced Star Trek: The Original Series , Doug Jung recalling, " Simon found a voice for her that was a bit of a wink and a nod to, 'Why is it, whenever they find aliens in the original series, they all speak English? What does that really say?' " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 27) Boutella herself said, " I definitely tried not to speak with my French accent. It would be weird for an alien, wouldn't it? Finding [her] language and speech pattern, it was very interesting to discover. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 72)

It was Sofia Boutella who thought up the moment where Jaylah assumes the command chair onboard the Franklin , which wasn't scripted but was proposed by the actress when she improvised it on set, during rehearsal. " She came in and sat down, and she said, 'This is my house,' " Justin Lin remembered. ( SFX , issue 276, p. 49)

Even Jaylah's friendship with Scott had a real-life parallel. Sofia Boutella observed, " Jaylah and Scotty develop a sort of brother and sister dynamic that Simon and I have off-set. " [10]

As Boutella had expected, the process of inventing Jaylah turned out to be delightful for her. ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 72)

Reception [ ]

In Simon Pegg's opinion, Sofia Boutella was successful as Jaylah; he called the actress "a golden addition to this group," referring to the film's principal cast. [11] Pegg also remarked, " Sofia charmed the socks off of all of us. She inhabits the character in such a way that made it a real joy to be her foil in the film. She's super-resourceful and tough. I love that she has this strange, syntactical way of speaking, which makes her feel very alien, and yet she's unbelievably sympathetic. " [12] Doug Jung described Jaylah as "one of the best characters to write" and went on to say, " She ended up being this fun, wild card character, and great for us, because we got to add a new alien race to the canon . " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 27) Jung also remarked that not only was Jaylah "kind of great," but also that Boutella "was amazing." [13]

Producer J.J. Abrams was likewise impressed with how the role of Jaylah turned out, enthusing, " I think Jaylah is my favorite new character. She is this unbelievably spirited, sweet, funny, and tough as hell character that becomes a very important ally to the crew, and Sofia did an incredible job of bringing her to life. " Joel Harlow was proud of Jaylah's appearance, remarking, " I think the white and black lines of her make-up, combined with the ribbing on her hair gives her a completely unforgettable look. " [14] Glad that Justin Lin had chosen the black-and-white appearance for the character, Harlow therefore deemed the objective of having Jaylah's make-up design "instantly recognizable and instantly iconic" as having been achieved. ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 81) Sanja Hays concurred about the character's design, " I think that's probably one of the most successful we've done, Joel Harlow and myself. " ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 41) Uhura actress Zoë Saldana was very impressed by Sofia Boutella's performance as Jaylah. ( Star Trek Magazine Movie Special 2016 , p. 47)

Boutella has expressed an interest in reprising the role of Jaylah again, saying, " I would love to see her evolve with all of the guys and with everybody. I would love to go back to her. I love her a lot. I enjoyed that experience so much. I would do it in a heartbeat. " [15]

Apocrypha [ ]

In the novel Fortune of War , a Tyrakhean woman is described as having a pale complexion accentuated by her prominent and symmetrical black facial tattoos. Author David Mack has confirmed that she is intended to be the same species as Jaylah [16] .

Cadet Jaylah

Jaylah as a Starfleet Academy cadet

The first issue of Star Trek: Boldly Go established that Jaylah did accept the offer to join Starfleet Academy. She was shown on Earth at the Academy, listening to a lecture that Montgomery Scott was giving. The fifth issue centered on Jaylah's backstory. She was born in space, from a family of space traders, losing her mother during childhood. An older sister, Keelah ( β ), died at the hands of Krall the same night Jaylah and her father ran away from the base.

The story also established that the black markings on her face had a meaning - "fierce", from which they derived her name.

Assimilated Jaylah

Jaylah as the Borg drone Five of Ten

In the mobile game Star Trek: Fleet Command , Jaylah was one of the cadets serving as officers on the independent starbase Home Base and its assigned vessels. Soon after, Jaylah is captured and assimilated by the Borg . When Jaylah succumbed to the Collective , she shed a single tear for the friends she would be forced to hunt. Jaylah became the Borg drone Five of Ten, and was assigned to Unimatrix 12 in the Alpha Quadrant. Eventually she was liberated from the Collective.

This Is What The Actress Who Plays Jaylah In Star Trek Looks Like In Real Life

Jaylah Star Trek white hair

" Star Trek Beyond " wasn't quite the success that everyone involved in it likely hoped it would be. While the film received mostly positive reviews (it holds an 86% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes ), it failed to be a box office hit. "Beyond" only managed to gross a little over $343 million at the worldwide box office — falling short of the box office totals of the two previous "Star Trek" films . As a result, Paramount Pictures has yet to make a sequel to "Star Trek Beyond," though, a number of new "Star Trek" TV shows have premiered in the five years since its release.

However, despite the film's disappointing financial returns, there are actually a number of things that "Star Trek Beyond" does right. That includes the introduction and creation of some memorable new characters, like Idris Elba's villainous Krall and Sofia Boutella's likable alien scavenger, Jaylah . An escaped survivor of the camp run by Krall, "Beyond" shows Jaylah become a quick and helpful new ally for the Enterprise crew.

Boutella made an instant impression with her performance as the character, despite being covered in heavy makeup and facial prosthetics throughout the entirety of the film. Indeed, the actress is totally unrecognizable in the role, so much so that viewers may be surprised to learn not only what Boutella looks like in real life, but also that "Star Trek Beyond" is far from the only notable project that Boutella has starred in.

Jaylah is played by dancer-turned-actress Sofia Boutella

Sofia Boutella has been steadily carving out an impressive film and television career for herself over the past several years. Boutella got her start as a professional dancer, and many of her earliest credits are for music videos from notable musical artists like Madonna and Michael Jackson. Her first major film role came in 2012 when she appeared as Eva in " StreetDance 2 ," but she achieved breakthrough success with her performance as the deadly Gazelle in 2014's "Kingsman: The Secret Service." Two years later, she appeared as Jaylah in "Star Trek Beyond" and followed up that sci-fi blockbuster with her memorable turn as Delphine — the seductive-but-well-intentioned love interest of Charlize Theron's Lorraine — in 2017's "Atomic Blonde."

That same year, Boutella starred alongside Tom Cruise in a live-action reboot of " The Mummy ," where she played the film's titular character. Meanwhile, in 2018 she appeared as Clarisse McClellan in the Michael B. Jordan-led HBO film adaptation of Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451," and earned major acclaim for her performance as Selva in the trippy, dance-driven indie film, " Climax ."

On the smaller screen, Boutella has also appeared as Yasmine in two episodes of the Amazon anthology series, "Modern Love," and is currently set to star alongside Alfie Allen and Jack O'Connell in the upcoming historical miniseries, " SAS: Rogue Heroes ." In other words, not only has Boutella already amassed some truly impressive credits for herself, but she's also shown no signs of slowing down any time soon, either.

Everything You'll Want to Know About the Actress Who Plays Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond

Updated on 7/24/2016 at 12:00 PM

Star Trek Beyond , the latest installment in the classic franchise, features its all-stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto back in action as Captain Kirk and Spock in another adventure that's the level of fun you'd expect from the series. The usual gang is back together in the third movie, including Simon Pegg, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, and the late Anton Yelchin, this time facing off with Krall, an intergalactic villain played by Idris Elba. As much as a delight as it is to see Elba on screen, it's another newcomer to the Star Trek universe who really steals the movie.

Sofia Boutella plays Jaylah, a badass alien stranded on Krall's planet. Not only does she have the coolest look in the movie, but she's also the film's most dynamic character, who shows extremes of emotional range and tons of charm with what seems like it was supposed to be a sub-supporting role. But beyond her performance, no doubt you'll be asking more about the actress who plays Jaylah so deftly.

Above is what Boutella looks like in her Star Trek Beyond prosthetics, and this is what she looks like as a normal human on a red carpet:

Who Is She?

Originally from Algeria, Boutella is a former professional dancer who danced backup on tours for Madonna and Rihanna — she even danced at the Super Bowl . She switched gears at age 29 to pursue acting and landed her first major role as Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service . It's one of the most memorable roles, as Gazelle has razor blades for legs and can do this:

Where You'll See Her Next

Boutella appears to have totally switched gears to acting, and she has a lot lined up. After her huge but mildly unrecognizable part in Star Trek Beyond , Boutella will costar next with Tom Cruise in the Mummy reboot after the indie Jet Trash , out later this year.

Sofia Boutella Wants To Return For ‘Star Trek 4,’ Hopes To See Jaylah “Evolve”

The world is still waiting for news on the next movie to follow 2016’s Star Trek Beyond , which introduced a new character played by Sofia Boutella. Now the actress is talking about her hopes to return.

Boutella on Star Trek 4

In Star Trek Beyond , Sofia Boutella played the new alien character Jaylah, who helped the crew of the USS Enterprise take down the bad bad guy, Krall. The film ended with Jaylah being accepted into Starfleet Academy. Paramount has been trying to get a follow-up “Star Trek 4” film going, but it isn’t known if it would include Boutella. Appearing at Steel City Comic Con in December, Boutella talked about the possibility of returning to the role (via Fandom Spotlite ):

I would love to see her evolve with all of the guys and with everybody. I would love to go back to her. I love her a lot. I enjoyed that experience so much. I would do it in a heartbeat.

The latest official news from Paramount Pictures on the Star Trek 4 project was removing it from their 2023 release calendar after director Matt Shakman exited the project, with the studio still indicating it was “excited about the creative vision of this next chapter and look forward to bringing it to audiences all around world.”

Boutella gave an update on what she knows about a follow-up to Beyond :

I don’t know if they’re making a fourth one. I hear things all the time, but I don’t know what’s happening.

The actress did speak about working with Simon Pegg, who co-wrote Beyond, and said they remain close:

I owe this experience to Simon. He wrote the character. He wrote that script, obviously. But aside from being on the screen, we developed a real strong friendship. He’s been incredible during filming, and after, and he remains a really good friend. We were very, very close during that shoot.

Since Beyond, Boutella has remained busy, appearing in a number of film and TV projects including The Mummy , Atomic Blonde , Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities , and SAS: Rogue Heroes . She just wrapped filming as the star of Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi movie Rebel Moon . Over the summer, Snyder shared a makeup test with Boutella that showed she’s playing an alien again.

Paramount Developing Second Star Trek Movie In Parallel With ‘Star Trek 4’

I remember shortly after Beyond’s release some fans hoping that Jaylah would be the plucky young ensign in the next movie. But, she may be an admiral by the time they make this thing, if at all.

Her character seemed like the obvious Chekov replacement in a follow up movie, with Anton Yelchin dying and all. There’s no way they would kill the Chekov character in the story itself, but I would’ve been happy with a line about him serving on the Reliant.

Absolutely agreed. If they do make a 4th Kelvin film, stating that he is now on the Reliant would be a great way to honor him. There is no need to kill off the character in ST4. Well said!

Well, this is an alternate timeline, and although Paramount had strict guidelines in the past about what can and cannot be done with Trek characters (at least in the books if I remember correctly) I think you could still honor Anton and his take on Chekov if he died an honorable death or his death had meaning. That being said I think Jaylah would be a welcome addition to take his place as the new navigator alongside Sulu at the helm. In a way it would also be an homage of sorts to the Animated Series having an “alien” instead of Chekov. Either way, lets get Star Trek back in theaters…

It has been so long i bet Sulu is Captain of the Excelsior in the Kelvin Timeline. Kirk is probably an Admiral and Spock is Captain of the Enterprise. They completed their 5 year mission of the Enterprise A.

You see thats the Star Trek era I love the most and would want to see again, which is why a long delayed ST’4′ is kind of a positive imo(so long as they actually get around to doing it), it gives them the opportunity to really distance themselves from TOS era and the candy coloured uniforms and them all young starting out etc and brings them fully into the 80s movie era (after the various homage/foreshadowing to the original movies in the 3 kelvin films). older wiser, maroon uniforms (or at least a kelvin variant), mushroom spacedock, proper klingons/BoPs, reliant/excelsior, saavik, david etc.

Of course that is if they bother to resurrect the Kelvinverse . At the current time its as dead as Spock lying in his Mark VI..

Kelvin Maroon unis fascinating

She needs a job

She has one.

Trying to get one for a movie production that doesn’t exist is probably not the best way to obtain one then. 😂😂😂

Indeed, it’s all about $$$. She has no interest in here character at all, the same as the others who say the same BS. You put your name in the hat for future projects, not just ones that are immediate.

She’s starring in a Zach Snyder film, I think she’s doing ok.

I always thought the Jaylah character had potential, seems like a waste if they don’t make another Kelvin movie. Maybe introduce her on SNW?

She was the best new character.

my only Guts feeling about her (I watched this Movie in the Cinema), she could fit together with Seven of Nine. Well at last she could be the Tough New Fresh face of the Ranger’s Crew. But well, it would be nearly impossible to merge her with current Seven of Nine from Picard TV Series. She would be a fine ranger Chief Engineer if they would had an Flagship

Because She is from the Kelvin-Timeline and Picard is not. All that could connect is this famous Black Hole born out of Red Anti-Mater. Total different Universe, Time is not on her Site. TOS Reboot meets TNG Epilogue Timeline.. And not all should be fixed with an instable Time and Space Wormhole anomaly, it is wearing down on the Fans

Introduce her Character (and the Actor) into the TV Series, if you want. But left her old Jaylah behind. Perhaps the New Face is from their Species or Family Bloodline

New face: “I am not Jaylah, She was one of my Ancestors”. “i am one of her DNA- Clones, that she created and trow the Probe trough an Wormhole and here i am!”

No need of Time Jumps, but well. Good Luck explained how she ended up in Picard’s Universe

Surprise, surprise an actress would like the chance to earn another pay cheque.😉

Actors are asked these goofy questions all the time by fans and entertainment reporters, which amount to: Would you like to keep working? Well, what do you expect them to say? No, I’d rather not be in another big movie, with even more fame and wealth and all that.

Actors get paid for their work, too. Do you work for free?

When I look for a job, it doesn’t become headline news and it doesn’t get dressed up as “Id LoVe To SeE HoW ThE ChaRaCtEr GRoWs” lie

Dude, keep you day job, because the Improv is not calling you back.

We should all live so long!

I would love to see Jaylah in another movie (or even her prime universe counterpart on Strange New Worlds).

LOL, good luck with that!

I can’t believe anyone is thinking there’s a question to ask at this point.

“It’s dead Jim.”

I guess I get it. They did just announce another movie last year, but yeah like all the others, withered and died fast. In fact the one year anniversary when they announced the Kelvin cast was coming back and all systems was go in that now infamous shareholder event announcement is next month…you can’t make this stuff up lol. And she probably just hears about another movie happening in the media like the rest of us but don’t know anything beyond that.

We should have an anniversary party for the official ‘announcement’ of ST4 . complete with anniversary logo, pins, patches, official starlog anniversary magazine, documentary (hosted by William Shatner) etc

Maybe Paramount will do a repeat this year ;-)

I’m hoping that the investors meeting will feature big announcements for two new streaming shows and the Prodigy animated feature.

That might distract investors from the utter nonsense that was the premature Kelvin movie announcement. They are fortunate that the SEC hasn’t cited them for providing misleading information to shareholders and the markets.

Imagine they do it again lol, JJ coming out and saying Trek 4 is def happening with the cast filming this year for release summer 2024. plus Hemsworth is def returning as Kirks father! (despite him going to be filming Avengers soon)

I would someone literally throw tomatoes at Abrams if this guy gets anywhere near a podium and wastes everyone’s time yet again.

Would really like to see her and the whole crew back for a fourth movie in the JJ-verse. More importantly, my wife and daughters really liked her as well.

Paramount, make it so

I personally would love to see this. She was a fun character. And, seeing as (very sadly, without recasting) Chekov is no longer around, she’d be a great addition to the crew.

I would love to see Jaylah in another Star Trek movie.

Can they make a movie with a sense of wonder and exploration. A hopeful optimistic future. I don’t care if they have to do a stand alone or another reboot to give us that Roddenberry future again.

Have you seen the previous thirteen Trek movies? No, they can’t make a sense of wonder and exploration movie. Why start now?

Why the shows will always be superior to the movies IMO. Sure more CGI, bigger sets and cooler space battles, but the ‘wonder’ usually lie with the shows.

eh, TMP…..

A boring, seemingly endless drift through dark cloudy stuff only to find it was a rehash of the Nomad plot. Zero wonder for me or any of the group of young people we’d organized to see it.

I understand that the recent re-release is far superior in visual quality.

That doesn’t take away how disappointingly derivative the reveal was when we first saw the film in its initial run in the best quality cinema in the major city where I lived at the time.

Despite its many drawbacks in execution, TMP had the right idea for a Star Trek movie. It’s a mystery. What is this? We have to figure it out. Which has been the premise for many a good movie, in sci-fi and other genres. After all, what is a detective but an explorer, really?

See the recent Glass Onion for example. If someone could make a Trek movie with that sort of quick pacing, mysterious and dangerous sci-fi elements, and social commentary on top of that, then more power to them. I know Into Darkness tried to go somewhat in that direction, but again, it’s the execution.

They irony about TMP is the movie was such a bore and a disappointment, they moved Star Trek in the action realm which proved to be a huge hit. But unfortunately they now seem to think a Star Trek movie can be ONLY be successful as an action franchise. And that’s odd in itself since TVH proved (once again) you can actually do different things with the franchise that will get people to show up as long as its good and entertaining.

It would be nice to see them really try something different with the movies. Use an original cast of characters. Make a movie that is actually about exploration but don’t have to turn it into a marvel or Star Wars movie where something is blowing up every ten minutes. Create stakes where it’s not some uber-villain in the forefront, but a more internal conflict.

TMP was a really dull movie but it was definitely an ambitious one that tried to get people to think and give the story a little more weight beyond just firing at Klingons. Unfortunately they never tried that approach again.

Right, TVH is another example. It’s kind of a mystery but also at its heart it’s a heist movie. So, I don’t know why they keep going for these revenge seeking villains with big ship weapon things. That was already tiresome way back when with Nemesis.

I don’t think any of us really understand it. That seem to have become a mandate for some odd reason, at least for the last 4-5 movies. And I just became bored with the Kelvin movies because that’s what they did with every film and probably another reason why Beyond failed. It just felt like more of the same, just in a different package.

If they can make those dippy Short Trecks, they can make a Jaylah special on the Plus. Sofia Boutella is a great talent — note her fearless work in the daring film CLIMAX , one of this century’s most provocative and memorable cinematic achievements.

It would be great to see her in a Short Trek.

I don’t think the Shorts were at all dippy, and bringing back minor legacy characters for their own short moments is something many of us would like to see.

Would love to see her in the next movie — cool !

By this point the Star Trek movie announcement has basically become a drinking game. I don’t think she should keep her hopes up for Trek, but she is a very talented actress that I feel like will soon join either the MCU or Star Wars in some way.

Dont think she will join Star Wars becose she just wrapped Rebel Moon wich is a space opera movie by Zack Snyder .Two parts have been filmed back to back already and four more are coming wich will make it a New ip scifi Saga and will probably make Sofia Boutella sky rocketing the StarMeter of Hollywood. She is the lead character of Rebel Moon and did all her stunts, trained 15 months non stop for it.

No thanks. The movie was very forgettable as were basically all the JJ movies. They were made for the Transformers crowd, not Star Trek fans.

she was unforgettable. bring her back if nothing else

Just read a rumour from a usually accurate twitter source (ViewerAnon) saying JJ Abrams might be going to direct Trek 4 ..

LOL oh god. But I’m sure this is another crash and burn rumor regardless.

Could be, but might just make sense as ppl are saying he must’ve been let go by DC (apparently he was developing stuff but obviously James Gunn is now running the show) and he’s kind of been burned by the fallout of Star Wars TROS (after the major success with TFA), so it makes sense he might come back to Trek for some sci fi redemption with his crew (and Par did say they were going ahead with the next Trek film after Shakman left) but yeah its difficult to get hopes up after being burned SO many times lol

I think Abrams would be a horrible choice. We don’t need someone on a ‘redemption tour’, we need someone who actually cares and gets Star Trek and Abrams isn’t it. I thought the first film was OK, but STID prove this guy should stay far away from Star Trek IMO and he’s just become too divisive in the fanbase obviously. The guy is getting burned these days for a reason and I hope that would include Star Trek too.

Now all that said, sure it can be true because the people running Paramount seems about as clueless as him. But from every report out there, the last movie failure had nothing to do with having a director, but not agreeing on a story or getting enough investors to even fund the movie because they are probably looking for MI or Top Gun profits and not Kelvin movie profits and probably why these movies are continually stalled. It all sounds like a real mess as it’s been since 2016.

I think if Abrams were to return he’d at least be trying his best to make the best movie possible after ID and ROS were deemed to have caused upset in the Trek/Wars camps.(but both his Treks were vastly superior to Beyond imo, and brought something of a 80s feel back to the Trek movies but obviously bigger). Plus it would ensure a decent budget 150m at least. What im half hoping for (based on hearing this ‘news’) is he returns as director with Orcis abandoned ST3 script adapted to fit this 4th film (and in light of Treks resurrection on tv) and we get the ’80s movie version’ of the JJ cast (as the trilogy already given us the TOS version)

I was hoping for the same.

Another shot….

Yeah we’ll see I guess. Obviously I would rather have a movie versus none at all but you know my feelings about all of this at this point. I’m just not confident about any of it or one will happen any time soon. A few years ago I was on the other side and always yelling another film was coming and people are just being too cynical. That was four years ago now lol. But if anything happens, it’s a positive. I think I just stopped caring for the most part.

Pouring more shots….

I might be directing it, too. See, that’s how rumors work. Pouring myself a shot now, the previously mentioned drinking game sounds interesting.

A week ago, I was reading up on some old threads about the last movie announcement and I said in one of them I hate being that guy but I’m still a bit skeptical it will happen but more confident this one could at least. Someone responded to me saying ‘but you’re always that guy’.

Gee…I wonder why lol. That was said to me last March or April when it FINALLY looked like we were getting real progress for the first time in years but turned out to basically be a troll job by Paramount for the fans and actors. .I think EVERYONE should be that guy or girl now. And relying on rumors like this is just more of the same non-news.

Phil you better not screw this movie up. We waited way too long. Wait I just heard you left the project.

Well first what Red Line would they create? I mean until Now not so many TV Star Trek Shows are like the Kelvin Movies, right? Kelvin Movies is like StarFleet is on War. So show me a current TV Show that is on War with some other Species? Not even Discovery are currently on War. The Last time i am remembering of War is the DS9 War Arc. But i do not know if this is well received enough to bring it to the Cinemas or even “Netflix”.

So looking at the current popular TV Shows guide them as Compass:

Discovery: to save an Entire Galaxy (again)?

Strange New World: It is an well written pre-TOS TV Show. I do not think the Fans want to see an War Admiral Pike

Picard: This Show do not count, because it is surrounded Picard and his Crew Buddies around him, Perhaps the Children of Sung and the X-Borgs could get an Spinoff with the Ranger’s Power combined. But then it is moving away from Starfleet (ST:Renegades?). Do we really want to see some Marquie 2 Reloaded History?

Lower Decks, the Stars are the Crew on their Ship. But when they are out of old TV Shows and Movies references, that is their Main Engine so far, what will happen to them?

Prodigy is targeting for Kids and Parents that want to introduce them to their Star Trek old World values

So where do Kelvin’s Pew Pew, Peng Peng World could fit? Showing us the Cowboy Solutions of an alternate Kirk? Borgs? The evil Borgs is no more

So i really do not know what Star Trek 4 would do different or try to adept

Sry, for the Wall of text and for my spelling

Going forward, she definitely deserves to be a regular in any Kelvin movies. She’s just too good to leave behind!

I agree, she has some bits of:

  • B’Elanna Torres

it would be a shame if She never appears because Kelvin Movies are iced. Perhaps the Writing Room should be Honest and Bold with the fans and do not try to hide it. But give an good plausible solution to be on the current TV Shows. Let her be an Future DNA Clone of her, send trough this Red Mater created Wormhole with the Mission to save Romulous. But well, they where a bit off and She came to late in the (Insert TV Show Timeline here and Universe) and She try to adept with a Fresh Start

Come on, in Lower Decks they found also an bold but honset Solution to revive someone, right? Just to not try to play Dumb with the fans, and the rest would fall into it’s Places

Of the three Kelvin movies, BEYOND (faults and flaws aside) was the ONLY one that my late wife and I truly enjoyed. If they end up making another Kelvin film (unlikely, I think), she needs to be in it, one way or another. That’s the only way they’d get me into a theater and to buy a Blu-ray for my library. Otherwise, I’m just looking forward to the third and final year of PICARD. Nothing else in the Trek franchise still has my attention. My primary interest is on non-genre low budget indie films and filmmakers.

Robert Meyer Burnett has come out and said that JJ is definitely going to direct the 4th Kelvin film, but still waiting on a script.

I’m no RMB fanboy, but where there’s smoke, there’s a fire when it comes to RMB. I mean, Terry Matalas screened the entire PIC s3 to the guy to promote the show.

It does kind of make sense when you consider it was JJ who full on announced ST4 going ahead a year ago like ‘yeh its def happening and it will have my cast in it’ but then it doesn’t happen? So everyone the fans, the cast, thinks he was just making it up? he won’t want that on him will he. (shades of announcing the Hemsworth ST4 back in 2016) a way to make it right is to come back and direct

and ‘the notorious’ RMB does seem quite reliable. I remember few years ago way before it was rumoured on internet etc he hinted all kinds of multiverse stuff bringing back previous actors was in the works at Marvel/DC that would blow peoples minds and he wasn’t wrong – (SM:NWH, Dr Strange Multiverse, Keaton back as Batman in The Flash, Avengers Secret Wars etc)

Ok hear me out l. How did star fleet handle Franklin captain in the prime universe? Like he was far from the timeline incursion and disappeared before the split. Like I would love ST. SNW handle this issue

Jennifer Lawrence Inspired Star Trek Beyond's Jaylah

  • Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone, creating a strong female character with a unique backstory.
  • Jaylah was a successful new addition to the Star Trek series, positioning her to potentially join the crew of the USS Enterprise in future films.
  • Sofia Boutella, who played Jaylah, expressed her interest in returning to the Star Trek universe as many questions about Jaylah's species and background remain unanswered.

Star Trek Beyond 's new heroine, Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence in one of her early, award-winning roles. Boutella donned elaborate makeup to play Jaylah, the lone survivor of an unknown species who crash-landed on the planet Altamid. Jaylah joined forces with Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of the USS Enterprise, who were also stranded and held prisoner on Altamid after their starship was destroyed by the nefarious Krall (Idris Elba).

Jaylah was an impactful new addition to Star Trek Beyond , and she was arguably the most successful new female character introduced in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies . The main cast of Star Trek includes Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Zoë Saldaña), but the addition of Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) in Star Trek Into Darkness wasn't as well-received as filmmakers hoped, and Carol didn't return for the third Star Trek movie. Along with the devious Kalara (Lydia Wilson) and Commodore Paris (Shohreh Aghdashloo), Star Trek Beyond had notable new female faces, but Jaylah was the new hero who was positioned to join the Starship Enterprise's crew at the end of Star Trek Beyond .

In 2016, Anton Yelchin tragically passed away, and Jaylah was seen as the potential replacement for Yelchin's Ensign Pavel Chekov.

Star Trek Beyond Ending & Why No Sequel 7 Years Later Explained

Jaylah in star trek beyond was inspired by jennifer lawrence, lawrence starred in 2010's winter's bone.

Star Trek Beyond 's co-writer, Doug Jung, told TrekCore in 2016 that the character of Jaylah was inspired by Ree Dolly, the character Jennifer Lawrence played in Winter's Bone (2010). Jung and co-writer Simon Pegg, who also plays Scotty, wanted to add a new female hero to Star Trek Beyond, and they literally named Jaylah after Jennifer Lawrence's nickname, "J-Law." Jung explains:

We wanted to have a strong female character; I think Simon’s talked about this, like Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter’s Bone.” We just kept referring to her as ‘Jennifer Lawrence’ for a long time, then somebody, joking, was like J-Law?,,, Phonetically, it sounded good – ‘Jaylah.’ It sounded a little foreign... We wanted her character to be someone who was outside of the understanding of the Federation and what it means, and really, to really be a blank slate in the sense that she has no real understanding even of her own people, in a way.

In Winter's Bone , Jennifer Lawrence's Ree Dolly was a teenager in the Ozarks searching for her father, and she endures abuse from the members of her meth-dealing relatives as she tries to save her family. Star Trek Beyond gave Jaylah very different circumstances - she was an orphan living alone on Altamid and evading Krall's soldiers - but, like Ree Dolly, Jaylah was a self-sufficient, indomitable spirit. Jaylah, however, gained a found family in Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise.

Jaylah amusingly referred to Captain Kirk as "James T." and she thought of the crashed Starfleet ship, the USS Franklin, as "my house."

Will Jaylah Return In Star Trek 4?

Sofia boutella would love to return as jaylah.

Jaylah has only made one Star Trek appearance, but she made a striking impression, and fans hope that Jaylah will return in Star Trek 4 . 8 years after Star Trek Beyond 's release, the next J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movie remains in limbo. However, Deadline recently reported that Star Trek 4 is being developed as the "final chapter" of the voyages of Chris Pine's Star Trek movie crew. At the end of Star Trek Beyond , Jaylah joined Starfleet Academy, and she would presumably be a full-fledged USS Enterprise crew member in Star Trek 4.

Many questions about Jaylah remain unanswered.

For her part, Sofia Boutella would love a Star Trek return as Jaylah. Many questions about Jaylah remain unanswered, starting with what species she is and what planet her people hail from. But one thing that is known is that Jaylah is named for and inspired by J-Law herself, Jennifer Lawrence. Perhaps Star Trek 4 should create a villain for Jennifer Lawrence to play so that Jaylah can meet her namesake on-screen.

Star Trek Beyond is available to stream on Paramount+.

Star trek beyond's jaylah succeeded where carol marcus failed.

Star Trek Beyond’s original female character Jaylah was a creative triumph in the wake of Star Trek Into Darkness’ overly sexualized Carol Marcus.

Star Trek Beyond and its original female character Jaylah was a creative success in the wake of Star Trek Into Darkness ' mishandling of classic character Carol Marcus. Director J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise in 2009 with the simply named film Star Trek . Featuring a star making turn from new James T. Kirk actor Chris Pine, a surprisingly heartfelt story, and rousing action sequences, Star Trek was a bona fide hit, reviving the franchise for a new generation. The movie was also praised for its decision to make Uhura more of a central character than she was in Star Trek: The Original Series , adding some much-needed gender equality to the Enterprise.

But the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness , was a misstep in several ways, notably in how it treated the new version of Carol Marcus. Originally introduced in the Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan movie , the original Carol Marcus was a brilliant, respected scientist who was also the mother of Kirk's son, David. But Into Darkness turned her into yet another of Kirk's interchangeable romantic conquests, complete with an infamous scene of Kirk staring at her in her underwear. Director Justin Lin would take the reins for the third entry, Star Trek Beyond , which featured the original character Jaylah, who succeeded in all the ways Carol Marcus had failed.

Jaylah Overcame All Of Abrams’ Problems With Female Star Trek Characters

Star Trek Beyond was a creative triumph in many ways, none more so than the introduction of Jaylah. After the USS Enterprise is destroyed by the villainous Krall, the surviving crew crash-land on the planet Altamid, where they encounter Jaylah, a young alien woman who was stranded on the planet several years earlier. A formidable warrior, she assists the USS Enterprise survivors in taking on Krall and eventually departs Altamid with Kirk and friends aboard the USS Franklin.

Jaylah is a fully formed character in a way that no other female character - aside from Uhura - can claim in the Abrams-produced reboot films. She's an integral part of Beyond' s impressive story, serving as both its emotional core and comic relief. She's also not pointlessly sexualized, never reduced to an attractive woman for Kirk and his compatriots to ogle and flirt with. She's treated with respect and empathy by the crew of the Enterprise, which eventually leads to her embracing the tenets of Starfleet.

Will Jaylah Return In Star Trek 4?

There's still much to be determined about a fourth entry in Star Trek reboot film franchise, known as the Kelvin timeline . Star Trek Beyond underperformed at the box office, and the intervening six years have seen a parade of writers and directors join and leave the potential project. At the moment, no one is attached to direct Star Trek 4 , and Paramount has removed the project from its upcoming release schedule.

If Star Trek 4 ever happens, it would make perfect sense for Jaylah to be a part of it. Star Trek Beyond ended with her declaring her intent to join Starfleet, and with the tragic death of Pavel Chekov actor Anton Yelchin - who producers have promised will not be recast - there would be an open seat on the bridge of the newly constructed Enterprise-A. Even if Star Trek Beyond really is the end of the line for the Kelvin timeline, it at least gifted the franchise a great original character in Jaylah.
