Hamilton the musical to go on first UK tour

While the West End production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop musical continues in London, a new cast will simultaneously tour the UK beginning in Manchester in November

For more than five years, the Victoria Palace theatre in London has been the only “ room where it happens ” in the UK. But Lin-Manuel Miranda ’s smash-hit musical Hamilton, about US founding father Alexander Hamilton, will embark on a tour beginning in Manchester in November and continuing in Edinburgh next year, with further locations to be announced.

Cameron Mackintosh, producer of the tour, said he would be assembling a new company of actors “to bring this great show to our leading cities”, while the London production runs simultaneously. Visiting Scotland will be fitting, added Mackintosh, because “the real story of Alexander Hamilton began in Ayrshire, where his father was born in the 1700s, before he moved to Nevis in the West Indies”.

Hamilton’s first UK tour will open at the Manchester Palace theatre on 11 November for a 15-week season. It will then run at the Festival theatre, Edinburgh, from 28 February to 27 April. Tickets go on sale on 13 March.

Hamilton has been running at the restored Victoria Palace theatre in London since 2017 and is currently booking until March 2024. It has run on Broadway since 2015 and has toured in North America, Australia and Germany.

The show, with book, music and lyrics by Miranda, who originally starred as Hamilton (the first secretary of the Treasury), had its first performances off-Broadway at the Public theater in New York in 2015. It has won the Pulitzer prize for drama, 11 Tony awards and seven Olivier awards.

Hamilton the musical UK tour: Cities, dates, and how to get tickets

hamilton on tour uk 2023

The beloved West End production of Lin-Manuel Miranda ’s award-winning musical Hamilton is set to embark on its first UK tour.

The soulful retelling of the first US secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton’s life story has been conquering Londoners’ hearts at the Victoria Palace Theatre for over five years.

And, now the Hamilton cast and crew are preparing to hit the road for 15 weeks in the coming months.

If, like the lyrics of the musical’s song “My Shot”, you’re “young, scrappy and hungry” for some Hamilton action, here is everything you need to know about the tour dates, locations, and ticket sales.

What are the Hamilton tour dates and locations?

While all the tour dates and locations have not yet been revealed, we do know when and where the musical’s nationwide journey will start and end.

The highly anticipated tour will kick off at the Manchester Palace Theatre on November 11, 2023.

After 15 weeks of vibrant shows, the tour is currently set to conclude at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre on February 28, 2024.

The official website advises that more cities are due to be announced soon.

When and where can I buy Hamilton UK tour tickets?

To stay up to date on when the presale will take place, the official website advises fans to sign up to their Hamilton mailing list.

The general sale of the tickets will start at 11 am on March 13, 2023.

What is Hamilton about?

The musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an orphan who rose through the ranks to become a Founding Father of the USA.

Born in the islands we now call Saint Kitts and Nevis, Hamilton spent his childhood in Charlestown.

After a series of unfortunate incidents such as his mother dying from illness, his cousin committing suicide and the few valuables his family owned being seized, Hamilton left his job as a trader. He sailed to Boston before moving to New York City , where he focused on getting a solid education.

While studying at King’s College, which is now called Columbia University, Hamilton became more outspoken about his political beliefs. He stressed the need for a revolution in America, for example.

When the American Revolutionary War began in 1775, he served as an artillery officer, aided General George Washington and more.

As the founder of the Bank of New York and the first US secretary of the treasury, Hamilton broke barrier after barrier with his historic decisions.

The musical is billed as a touching look at the accomplishments and failures of Hamilton, both in his professional and personal lives.

As the lyrics of one of the songs go: “Every other founding father’s story gets told.”

So, this is Hamilton’s story finally being told.

How to get tickets for the 2023/24 ‘Hamilton’ UK tour

It’s the first time the hit musical will venture beyond London

Amy Houghton

Hear ye, hear ye: musical fans across the UK will finally get to be in ‘the room where it happens’.  Yep, that’s right: after more than five years in the capital, the award-winning ‘Hamilton’ will be embarking on its first nationwide tour. Producers are starting to assemble a fresh ensemble of actors and dancers who will rap their way through America’s origin story on stages across the country later this year.

Cameron Mackintosh, the theatrical bigwig whose company is running the tour, said: ‘I am thrilled that it is time to put together a second British national touring company to bring this great show to our leading cities. Opening first in Manchester , followed by Edinburgh – not far from where the real story of Alexander Hamilton began in Ayrshire, where his father was born in the 1700s, before he moved to Nevis in the West Indies.’

When do tickets go on sale for the Hamilton tour?

Tickets for both the Manchester and Edinburgh runs will be available from March 13. Eager fans can sign up for priority access via the Hamilton website here .

How much do tickets cost?

Prices for the tour are yet to be revealed. However, if the London shows are anything to go by, seats could cost anything from £20 to £250.

What dates are on the tour?

So far we know that the show will first arrive at Manchester Palace Theatre from November 11 2023 and run until February 24 2024. After that, the cast will head north to the Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre for a run lasting from February 28 to April 27 2024.

More dates are set to be announced soon.

Opening first in Manchester, followed by Edinburgh – not far from where the real story of Alexander Hamilton began in Ayrshire, where his father was born in the 1700’s, before he moved to Nevis in the West Indies. Tomorrow we start casting for a brilliant new company. We look forward to welcoming audiences to “the room where it happens”.

WHAT IS HAMILTON ABOUT?

HAMILTON is the story of America then, told by America now.  It tells the story of America’s Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton.

The show is full of witty lyrics, passionate performances, and features a score that blends hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and classic Broadway music.

Hamilton will tour the UK for the first time - opening in Manchester first.

The award-winning musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda will play in Manchester Palace Theatre for 15 weeks.

It is one of the biggest ever musical announcements for the city, and will run from Saturday 11 November 2023 to Saturday 24 February 2024.

It will then continue around the UK with more dates to be announced.

Casting for the tour is currently underway.

The Cameron Mackintosh and Jeffrey Seller production has been playing on London's West End since 2017 and continues to play to sell-out houses at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

Cameron Mackintosh said: "Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is indisputably the most brilliant, ground-breaking, contemporary musical of modern times.

"I feel extraordinarily fortunate that Lin and my friend Jeffrey Seller, the show’s original producer, have entrusted me with their wonderful musical in the UK and Ireland.

"The London production opened in 2017 at the Victoria Palace, a theatre I completely rebuilt to house Hamilton, where it continues to play and has proved to be as big a success as the Broadway original.

Hamilton tour review – hit musical starts a new victory lap

The multi-award-winning musical is finally heading across the UK and Ireland

hamilton tour 1

It’s nearing a decade since cultural juggernaut Hamilton catapulted creator Lin-Manuel Miranda into stardom with the kind of once-in-a-generation order of magnitude. It’s since established such a hyperventilating fanbase and reputation that it’s practically fireproof against even ballistic criticism. But it doesn’t have to worry, as this new victory lap tour of the country confirms.

Its formidable stature matches the bracing nature of its hyper-speed hip-hop. Genre of choice for telling the contributions of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton to the American Revolutionary War, Constitution and treasury. We see him pick up this style at college – an immigrant who learns linguistic dexterity and showmanship as fitting in and holding your own. The Cabinet debates he will have are rap battles – precursors to the duels where they’ll grip pistols like the microphones.

The verbal acrobatics don’t just keep it pacey and contemporary. The syncopated beats of “My Shot” become converted by stamping fists and tankards into an ominous undercurrent that echoes “you’re gonna get shot”. Dancers body-pop like they’re taking hits from bullets refracting through them. Andy Blankenbuehler’s choreography – immaculately performed – creates a sense of things always in motion as the revolution courses through. The stage revolve presents a whirlwind with him at the centre.

haim 1

Its slower moments balance the speed but can’t compete with the electricity. There are also jumpy transitions between scenes, songs and genres, such as the indignation of “Burn” or mournful stillness of John Laurens’ death, back into the bustle of politics in “Non-Stop”. Better at offsetting the tone is Daniel Boys’ strutting, pouting King George, lit in regal purple, drawing out “you” and “own” with his will to retain ownership of his subjects.

Shaq Taylor’s Hamilton shows the strain of his competing legacies – familial and political – his rhythm often halted by doubt on his contemplative, weary face. In “It’s Quiet Uptown” he stands proudly and stoically next to his grieving wife, as though unable to break out of the politician and reach her, before they drift off as funereal silhouettes. Powerfully, there’s something ghostly about seeing the culmination of his life in a montage without any music at all – the silence piercing like the bullet that brought it all to an end.

David Korins’ set also reflects the pressure of progress and revolutionary effort. A balcony gives a literal dimension to Washington’s warning: “history has its eyes on you”. Coiled, dangling and stretched ropes suggest something being hoisted into existence, and the combative tug-of-war tensions he’s always engaged in. A brick wall at the back stands crumbling away and being rebuilt.

Some plot and detail is lost in the dense lyrics. It’s exacerbated by an indecisiveness over being a history lesson or character drama. While his relationship with his son seems a legitimate motivation – “if we lay a strong enough foundation, we’ll pass it on to you” – it doesn’t blend. More cursory are the women, which it tries to counter by inventing (or at least embellishing) a love triangle with his wife’s sister that only reinforces their ancillary roles as love interests. Eliza’s final coda, “I’ve put myself back in the narrative”, doesn’t convince.

Still, it brings its greatest feat: the dazzling “Satisfied”, where melodies somersault and lap over each other as the sister’s feelings rise up, while deft tempo switches convey a revolutionary whirr. Its triumph is also demonstrating a mainstream musical phenomenon can be complex rather than undemanding. Hamilton remains a megaton musical achievement.
