Best time to go for the Langkawi mangrove tour

You can start your morning with the harmonious langkawi mangrove tour. Get ready for the most scenic boat ride to the wetlands where numerous types of greenery and mangrove trees will greet you in your journey. The calmness and freshness is the best way to kick start your day.

In addition, the temperature is a bit low as compared to the afternoon plus langkawi is located in tropical climate area with a high humidity. However, once you step in the boat and as the boat cruising along the river. The cool breezes will make you feel so relax and trust me, you will love it.

Where is the langkawi mangrove tour starts

Langkawi Mangrove tour  starts from Kilim Geoforest Park jetty or Tanjung Rhu Jetty on the northern Langkawi. If you check on the map, you can spot the area on the top of the map. I would recommend to go to Kilim Geoforest Park jetty instead of Tanjung Rhu because the price is much cheaper, This is because Tanjung Rhu Jetty is a private area meanwhile Kilim Geoforest Park belongs to local government organisation.

If you are staying in Cenang area which it is the famous tourist spot, it takes around 45 minutes to arrive at Kilim Geoforest Park Jetty. You can use a local E-hailing service like a Grab car for around RM40 for one way transfer.

However, you can always talk to us if you need a pickup and drop off service so you experience a smooth tour starts from your hotel

Private tour or sharing tour? Which one works best?

For a sharing package, the tour is going to cost you around RM90 to RM120 per person depending on the itinerary. I would personally recommend the full package as hotel transfer, tourist guide and lunch are included in the package. This package is great if you are a less than 4 person.

However if you want a privacy, you can opt for a private tour. The rate for a private tour varies depending on tour hours. You can choose for 1 hour or up to 4 hours tour  as each package cover a different route. Compare the packages available here .

For the private tour, it doesn’t include hotel transfer, tourist guide and lunch at the floating restaurant. You can request for a hotel transfer and tourist guide from the operator with an extra charge. Meanwhile ,for the lunch you can order directly from the floating restaurant during your tour.

Standard size boat for a private tour can fit up to 8 passengers comfortably but if you have a big group. Let the operator knows and they will upgrade it to the bigger boat.

Is it safe for elderly, Pregnant ladies and babies?

It is absolutely safe for them to join the tour because this is a leisure tour and sightseeing. Most of the time, you will be staying on the boat and for every stop over like at the bat cave and fish farm, its easy to reach the platform from the boat.

You are advise to join a private tour so you can have a more flexibility during the tour. If you need help, just spoke to the boatmen.

What are the exciting activities during langkawi mangrove tour

There must be a very good reason why this mangrove tour has been highlighted by most of the tourist that visited langkawi as a must do tour. The amazing retreat to the nature and getting closer to the beautiful landscape are the main reason people all over the world joining this mangrove tour.

Let me guide you through all the exciting activities happened during mangrove tour langkawi

Mangrove Tour Langkawi

Kilim Geoforest Park Jetty

As you arrived at the Kilim Geoforest Park Jetty, you can park your car in the designated parking area. Next to the parking lot, there are a few local food stalls where you can have a local food if you haven’t take your breakfast. Stop by the shop selling merchandise before you headed to the jetty. Public toilet is available next to the food stalls.

In order to get to the jetty you need to walk about 150 meters with a greeny mangrove view on the both side. You can see a close-up structure of the mangrove tree, just make sure you don’t step in the muddy area.

There are waiting bay for you to sit for a while as the operator arrange your boat. Normally it takes less than 10 minutes. During low tide, the platform to get down to the boat is a bit steep. Make sure to hold the hand rail when you are getting on the boat. Don’t forget to take a great photos.

Langkawi Geopark Mangrove Tour Cave

Explore the Bat Cave

The Bat Caves (Gua Kelawar) is one the one of a kind cave situated close to the Kilim Jetty point and this place can be reached through watercraft. The Bat Cave is actually an exciting part of the Mangrove Tour Langkawi in Kilim Geoforest Park.

The majority of the bat population within Gua Kelawar includes the Malaysian Fruit Bats. But don’t you worry as these bats are sleeping and continue clinging to the cave ceiling. You can hear the squeaking sound and it’s the sound that these flying warm-blooded animals make. The bats utilize echolocation by means of catching with their ears the echoes that return once the sound waves they deliver bounce off the things found within their surroundings.

As you stroll along the 100-meter pontoon or footbridge which actually goes across the cave, you are requested to be silent; smoking would be destructive for them. The bigger caves with high roof are around 750 sq. meters. So high, you would see the bats like a specked fine art over the ceiling of the cave. There is additionally an intriguing area of the Gua Kelawar wherein you need to duck slightly due to the low section clearance which is approximately about 1 to 3 meters in height over the head.

Langkawi-mangrove-tour-eagle feeding

Eagle-feeding

Eagle feeding in Langkawi is a great activity you need to take when you are in a Langkawi Mangrove Tour. Feats start as the boat hover around while revving it’s motor. This is a way to ensure the chicken skin will properly be scattered around and eagles flying around will be able to grab the coasting chicken skin.

The reason the eagle is regularly around when they hear the revving watercraft motor is because, the fishermen frequently discard small fishes caught on their fishing nets that made for easier eagle picking.

If you are fortunate, there are hundreds of eagles waiting to be chased after and these will have hunting show to be displayed for the visitors. The Brown-winged Kingfisher or the Pelargopsis amauroptera, the Burung Pekaka Emas Bakau is the most highly anticipated bird within the mangrove in langkawi . Closely debilitated winged creature of Langkawi, Malaysia and Red Eagle or the Brahminy kite Red eagle is nowhere to be spotted except in Langkawi, Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia. This is one the reasons nature lovers need to come here and get a sight of The Red Eagle of Langkawi during their Mangrove Tour Langkawi.

Langkawi-mangrove-tour-fish feeding

Fish Feeding in Dangli Island

Aside from being awarded as the World Heritage Geopark title to Langkawi by UNESCO, Dangli Island is one of the 99 islands in Langkawi Kilim Geoforest Park.

Dangli Island offers delightful and perfectly clear water along the shoreline. You can see a great deal of coral formations all over this island and also with lovely wild fish lived in the territory effortlessly from the vessel.

If given the chance, you went there and the ocean level has subsided down, the boat ought to be far from the island to have the capacity to safely snorkel without actually hitting and damaging the corals. Different fish species here including butterflyfish, damselfish, the very rare rabbitfish, pink anemone fish, Moorish idols, and more can be found here. The real fun starts once fish feeding begins with a few crackers in the hands. Instantly, you have a wide range of wonderful fishes that surrounds you wanting some bite. By experiencing this activity, you can surely say that the feeling is indeed out of this world.

Our amazing Langkawi Mangrove Tour in Kilim Geoforest Park.

by Emma · Published June 28, 2019 · Updated May 13, 2020

During our stay on Langkawi Island, Malaysia, we sought a responsible tour company to take us to the Kilim Geoforest Park for a mangrove tour and cave exploring. It was an amazing day out, and we were very impressed with our chosen company’s   efforts to preserve Langkawi’s natural beauty and educate tourists about exploring with minimal impact. This is the account of our Mangrove Boat Trip with  Dev’s Adventure Tours .

Kilim Geoforest Park

The Kilim Geoforest Park is one of three Geoforests on Pulau Langkawi, which itself was designated a Geopark by UNESCO in 2007. Kilim is reportedly the most successful ecotourism destination on Langkawi and features a wide variety of natural features including coastal karst, caves, pristine mangrove forests, flora and fauna, fossils, and the oldest carbonate rock in the region; formed 490-370 million years ago.

The entrance of Kilim Geoforest Park

The entrance of Kilim Geoforest Park

The Kilim Geoforest Park is located on the north-east of Langkawi island, and the Kilim River Tourist jetty is where all boat tours depart from.

Our Langkawi Mangrove Tour with Dev’s Adventure Tours

Dev’s are the only tour company we could find who are committed to responsible tourism in the Kilim Geoforest. We took a Mangrove Boat Trip with them and were amazed at how many other companies were doing the same thing. There were hundreds of tourists boarding boats as well as us, and realising that most of them were not focussed on exploring responsibly saddened me. But our tour was also full of people committed to a better experience for Langkawi, which was heartening.

Many boats ready to depart for a Langkawi Mangrove Tour.

Dev’s collected us from our accommodation in a minibus in the morning, and we waited for our fellow participants at the jetty. We met other travellers and our kids were fitted for lifejackets while we were waiting.

Our guide Khiri was a wealth of information and was obviously passionate about leaving no trace of our visit. He even kindly but firmly spoke to guests of other tour companies when we were in the Kelaware caves, as they hadn’t been informed about ways to minimise disruption to the bats overhead.

Khiri took us to the bat cave first, and much to Dante and Allegra’s delight there were monkeys hanging around the entrance. (We didn’t pass through the crocodile cave on our tour).

kilim geoforest boat tour

We had been warned to do our utmost not to disturb the bats, and despite the smell, we all enjoyed our short exploration. Khiri shone the torch to show them only when everyone was quiet and ready, and we didn’t stay for long in each cave to minimise our invasion of their sleeping quarters.

kilim geoforest boat tour

We then explored along the beautiful mangrove forest for the river safari, and some keen eyes spotted viper snakes, kingfishers, monkeys, dingoes, butterflies, and a monitor lizard. We quietly stopped a few times to try and get photos of them but did not get too close or coax them in any way.

I didn’t manage to get many good pictures of the animals we spotted! But it was still great to see them. These are my best shots:

Some wild dingoes we spotted on our Langkawi Mangrove Tour.

Wild dingoes! I didn’t know they lived outside of Australia until seeing them here.

Spotting a wild snake in the Kilim Geoforest Park.

Zoomed in as far as I could to get a picture of a sleeping viper snake. Can you see it?

A monitor lizard on the bank of the mangrove forest.

A monitor lizard going about its day.

This is how far away we were to get pictures of the monitor lizard.

This is how far away we were to get pictures of the monitor lizard.

We then rode out on the open ocean, and under some rain clouds! We got soaked for about five minutes from a heavy downpour, which eased up just as we arrived at a small but beautiful secluded beach.

The water came in from everywhere! It was wild and windy for a short time, but we never felt unsafe.

The water came in from everywhere! It was wild and windy for a short time, but we never felt unsafe.

Water from above and below! The rain was heavy but brief.

The rain was heavy but brief.

The little beach was picture-perfect with golden sand, clear water, and surrounding greenery. There was a rope swing but no other amenities, so we only stopped for about half an hour to play and swim in the lovely water.

The beautiful secluded beach.

The beautiful secluded beach, part of our boat ride with Dev’s Adventure tours.

It was the most beautiful beach we had found in Langkawi, though we didn’t get to Tanjung Rhu. Dante, Allegra and I relished the soft sand and clear water, which was warm even though a few sprinkles of rain were still coming down.

It was also lovely just to explore the rugged beauty of the little beachfront; a reminder of what all of Langkawi must’ve once looked like.

Dante swimming in the shallow waters.

Light rain made swimming a lovely but unusual experience for us!

Khiri collected some rubbish that washed up on the beach and told us later that it washes up every day from a huge garbage patch out at sea.

We accidentally left Dante’s sandals there and didn’t realise until much later. The boat driver offered to take Anthony back to the beach to collect them, and Ant saw that pile of floating trash on the return trip. He was amazed at how big it was, and how quickly it had come closer to shore.

Dante still swimming, Allegra on the rope swing, Khiri collecting trash and other tour members exploring the beautiful beach.

Dante still swimming, Allegra on the rope swing, Khiri collecting trash and others exploring the beautiful beach.

A floating island of garbage closeby just doesn’t seem possible after enjoying such natural island beauty, but it’s always there, washing more trash onto the shore each day.

We could see Thailand in the distance as we departed the beach, which was a much nicer reminder of what we should be able to view from Pulau Langkawi. You might be able to get to this little beach on an island hopping tour: best to ask your guide first.

Viewing a part of Thailand from our mangrove tour.

Thailand in the distance!

Next was the eagle feeding area, which is the most controversial part of the tours. In a particular open area, many companies had started throwing kilos of chicken skin and scraps overboard to attract eagles for their guests to see.

So many tour guides did it over the years that the eagles stopped hunting, and their population decreased as their nutrient profile was altered so much that their eggs weren’t hatching. Snake populations also subsequently increased, as they had more eggs to eat.

Another tour boat splashing up water to attract the eagles.

The other tour boat splashed up some water to attract the eagles.

Khiri explained this history to us and noted that Dev’s were one of a few companies responsible for educating the other guides about what was happening. Now, instead of each boat taking so much chicken with them, they only take a few hundred grams each. The eagles still hunt for food to supplement their diet, and their population is on the increase again.

Many eagles circling the other tour boat for chicken scraps.

So many eagles came to feed on the chicken scraps.

Dev’s tours do not feed the eagles at all, but we did watch another tour boat doing it from afar. It’s a tricky situation as so many tourists expect the eagle feeding, so most of the tours want to give them the experience.

But I think that if the companies didn’t advertise it, tourists wouldn’t expect it and the eagles would stop relying on being fed, however small the amount.

After watching for awhile we headed to a floating restaurant for lunch, which was pre-booked and also popular with other tour companies. It was good food and they had some Western options for kids: most of which from our tour promptly fell asleep! Dante was the oldest and he stayed awake while the adults chatted and the little kids rested.

The beautiful floating restaurant where we had lunch.

The beautiful floating restaurant where we had lunch.

Within the restaurant compound, there was also a floating fish farm and we had a look around it after lunch. (I didn’t seem to get pictures though, sorry!) Then it was back to the bus drop off, and back to our respective accommodations.

It was a great experience for all of us, as it gave us a well-rounded tour without feeling rushed or creating harm along the way. There was enough to look at and chat about to keep young kids engaged, and Khiri also had plenty of information to answer our questions and elaborate on any topic.

We left our tour tired but happy to have seen some wild animals and the raw natural beauty of Langkawi. I definitely recommend Dev’s who now have more day tours available, including cycling, kayaking and hiking (they don’t offer road tours though). I would’ve loved to go kayaking if it was an option when we were there, as we really enjoyed it from our eco-resort on Tioman Island .

Kayak Mangrove Tour (photo courtesy of Dev's Adventure Tours)

Kayak Mangrove Tour (photo courtesy of Dev’s Adventure Tours)

Dev’s also no longer use plastic water bottles on any of their tours, which is fantastic for reducing their waste. From my understanding, all other tour companies still use plastic water bottles.

A glass water bottle used by Dev's Adventure Tours.

Dev’s glass water bottles have replaced plastic ones for tourists.

It is excellent to know that a company is committed to reducing waste, preserving ecosystems, and ensuring their island’s tourism is sustainable. Their professional and fun attitude and their ongoing commitment to improvement are admirable qualities for a tour company, especially in such a popular destination.

Please note that our guide Khiri is no longer working with Dev’s, but I am sure any of their other naturalist guides would also do a great job of educating and inspiring you along the way. This company consistently gets great reviews on Tripadvisor .

How to take mangrove & geoforest park tour.

  • Carry enough sun lotion and drinking water. While most boats have plastic shades, there is also some open space for seating. Try to avoid the open sun exposure. Even while the boat moves and the breeze feels nice, on a sunny day you won't know how your skin may take a battering from the sun.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, contton T-shirts, a hat and shorts.
  • Carry swimwear and towel if your tour offers time at Tanjung Rhu beach.
  • If you plan for a short tour for an hour or two, then reach the Kilim Jetty, take a boat and start around 4pm in the afternoon. By this time most of the tour boats would have returned and you will get a free way of exploring the geopark.

Langkawi’s Kilim Geoforest Park tour with Dev’s Adventure

Kilim Geoforest Park Tour Langkawi Feature

Langkawi’s mangroves at Kilim Geoforest Park are a signature part of the island. They are tall, lush and rich in wildlife and they are one of the three parks that contribute to the island’s UNESCO status as the 4th World Geopark . The other two parks are Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park and the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest park .

And don’t forget to read our guide on 10 Essential Things Travelers Must Know Before Visiting Malaysia .

About Langkawi’s Kilim Geoforest Park

The World Geopark Network is a UNESCO assisted network of parks with special geological interest currently made up of six geoparks in China, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Canada and Malaysia. This world recognition is the pride of every local in Langkawi and a real motivation to keep it clean and safe from threats to its conservation.

Because of their beauty and environmental interest, the mangroves and the ecoforest are no doubt, must do activities if you are visiting the duty-free island.

It is this popularity which has attracted several tour companies to offer tours of all sorts and shapes, but Dev’s Adventure Tours is definitively the best and I say this after having observed how the other guides led their tours and how they interacted with nature and their guests.

It is by no means the most affordable, but, as with everything in life, you get what you pay for and a few extra ringgit will make the difference between an average superficial experience and a memorable one, the difference between wandering the paths and getting the inside scoop on what’s around you. Dev’s guides are some of the most passionate I have ever met in my travels.

Looking at the mangroves

The Kilim Geoforest Park is made of three river estuaries that are interconnected and surrounded by beautiful green mangroves, caves of varying sizes and interest and ancient karst rock formations some of which have small beaches. The park borders the Andaman Sea , a stretch of sea that is shared with Thailand’s famous Phuket and Phi Phi islands. The limestone rock formations here are millennia old.

Touring Kilim Geoforest Park

The mangrove tour usually starts with a hotel pickup and a drive to the northern part of the island where the mangroves are. Most tour companies will pick you up from your hotel and drop you off. If you’re also looking for a place to stay, here is our list of the best luxury hotels in Langkawi .

There are boat tours, kayak tours and also bicycle tours of the mangroves. I joined one of the boat tours which took place on longtail covered boats in which you will be kept dry and protected from the sun.

Hanging bats

The boat tour consists of three stops: the bat caves, the eagle feeding spot and an island in the open waters of the Andaman Sea. Sometimes, depending on the tides, the guide may stop at a crocodile cave as well but that was not the case for our tour. In total, the tour took about 5.5h from pickup to drop off.

Stop 1: The bat caves

We started with a toilet pit stop by the pier before embarking on the tour as there are no toilets until lunch break. We then boarded the longtail boats and a quick ride through the mangroves took us to the bat caves. Here, a few species of bats fill the ceilings of an ancient cave that also has a few stalactites and stalagmites built over centuries.

We learned a lot about the cute bats and I will admit that Kieran, our guide, awoken a love for the little animals I did not have. I had previously always associated them with smelly poo and sharp teeth, and of course, Dracula.

On the boat

But his explanations of how they live, why they hang upside down and the zooming into the mother’s carrying the little ones made me think of them in a renewed kindered light. The power of a loving naturalist is surely priceless in sharing the beauty of wildlife and nature.

Kieran was incredibly passionate about the mangroves and Langkawi and it showed in every single one of his comments. And he had many! He spent the 5h entertaining us with stories, anecdotes and bottomless knowledge. He compared Langkawi and Malaysia with our countries of origin and he showed incredibly in-depth knowledge about the flora and fauna of the area.

The mangroves of Kilim geoforest park

At the bat caves I also understood why Dev’s Adventure Tours is the best company to explore the mangroves. I had already been told by my friend and local Langkawi Blogger Vanessa, of The Island Drum , that the naughty monkeys can be mischievous and the guests from other tour groups, of which there were many, were being pickpocketed and bothered by our hungry and very smart cousins.

Kieran had told us over and over again that we should not bring anything with us and we were only allowed cameras to the bat caves and the mangrove area surrounding it. Everyone else had all their belongings with them and, Langkawi being a tropical island, bottles of water and drinks which were the center of attention of the macaques. Oh boy were they interested.

Kieran kept telling all the other visitors to hide their water bottles, and even helped a few stuff them away in their backpacks while the other guides could not be bothered to care. It was a living example of a good guide vs. a careless one. Needless to say, the monkeys stole a few bottles and caused a stir.

It could also have been dangerous as I have experienced before in Singapore’s MacRitchie Reservoir where there are many monkeys and once, one stole my lunch sandwich from my hand. The bottles stolen by the monkeys unavoidably ended up in the fenced off mangroves littering the otherwise beautiful area. Education plays such an important role in such delicate ecosystem.

At the mangroves we also learned about the loud cicadas and how they can live with such noise. Apparently, they are deaf to their own noise. No wonder they can be generating such incredibly high pitched noise and not be bothered.

Bat caves of Kilim

After going through the caves, we got up and close with the mangroves. Langkawi’s mangroves are tall and thick, not the usual skinny and weak ones. They are said to have helped save the island from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami which destroyed Banda Aceh and many other parts of Indonesia and Thailand.

In Langkawi, only one person died. The tsunami hit the island during low tide when 104 islands are above water, as opposed to the 99 islands at high tide, and that also helped protect the land from the high waves. Apart from the mangroves and the tides, Langkawi was lucky enough to have a tidal bridge by the airport that stops the waves before the shore.

Stop 2: The Eagle Feeding Spot

Back on the boat, we headed to the eagle feeding spot. On the way, we spotted a bright blue kingfisher bird, totally beautiful. Their colour made it hard for them to hide from the tourists’ eyes. Kieran and the boatman also spotted viper snakes, twice, on the branches. How they managed to do that, with their camouflaged colors against the grey, muddy green mangroves was quite impressive. We also stopped for large monitor lizards.

Beautiful nature

Eagles used to be threatened by human feeding and lost their ability to fish for themselves because of people giving them food. However, thanks to the tours and conservation efforts they have slowly become healthier and returned to their feeding patterns.

There is a spot in the mangroves where you can see them dive into the water and fish from the surface. Because they have white bellies, the fish confuse them with the sky and can’t see them coming. It is a gorgeous spectacle to see them come down and pick a fish in a synchronised way as if they were showcasing a dancing display.

Stop 3: The Andaman Sea + floating fish farm and restaurant

Deserted island

After observing the eagles dance we headed out into the open Andaman Sea. The mangroves are connected to the sea and to Thailand which you can spot in the distance on a clear day. The karst formations of the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park are beautiful.

Big rocks jutting out of the emerald green sea towering tall above your head as you zip through on the longtail boat. It was a majestic landscape. We passed a few small beaches and then headed to a slightly larger one where we stopped for some stranded, Robinson Crusoe, island experience.

The water was clear and pristine here except for a few plastic bottles other day-visitors had dumped. It was a pleasant stop before our lunch. Talking of which, we stopped at a floating fish farm and restaurant spot on the water on our way back to have some tom yum soup and fried chicken with rice before returning to firm land.

With a full stomach, Kieran took us to have a look at the many fish species grown in the farm, some of them were absolutely massive. A final stop at the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park sign completed our tour, a very educational and interesting way to spend a morning in Langkawi.

  • Lynda Boone USA The boat tour is a relaxing and easy way to see the main Moscow sights. A pleasant tour made all the better by our incredible guide Ekaterina who went above and beyond to make our experience in Moscow so much more memorable. And yes, the view from the Moskva river of the Christ the Saviour Cathedral is truly unforgettable.
  • Jessica Bray Australia We really wanted to experience Moscow from the river especially during the winter time. The boat cruise allowed us to see St.Basil Cathedral, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and Moscow Kremlin completely unobstructed and without huge tourist crowds in front of us. I should also mention that having a private tour guide is very convenient as you have live commentary (if needed😊) during the duration of the river cruise. As we cruised along the river we passed by several bridges, the infamous Peter the Great statue, Luzhniki Stadium, where the World Cup finals were in 2018 and the Gorky Park. Overall an experience that I would highly recommend to anyone at anytime of the year.
  • Jake Gray UK Very pleasant boat tour. I believe it is a bit underrated as Moskva is not very well known for its river, but you get yourself a bout cruise and you can get a completely different feel for the city.
