Rising early, breathe deep and soak up the serenity of a sunrise over Uluru. As the sunlight plays with the landscape, the rock formations change colour before your eyes.

Next, it’s time to get close to this natural wonder. At 348 metres high and some 550 million years old, feel a powerful presence the moment you set eyes on it. A guided 10km Uluru base walk is your best opportunity to connect with Uluru and learn its stories. Relax beside tranquil waterholes, take a break under a magnificent Sheoak tree and peer into hidden caves.

Afterwards, stop for lunch and visit the Cultural Centre to deepen your understanding of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. You can learn about Anangu culture and the park’s natural environment through exhibits and free presentations with Anangu and park rangers.

This afternoon experience a fun and inspiring dot painting workshop with a talented local Anangu artist and interpreter. During this wonderful 1.5-hour authentic experience, you will learn about ancient symbols used in Anangu art and teachings and will be taught some introductory Pitjantjatjara words (the local language spoken by Anangu). Use this knowledge to create your own artwork to take home and treasure forever.

This afternoon, return to camp for some free time. Relax by the pool or enjoy some of the activities at Ayers Rock Resort, such as a didgeridoo performance, a guided garden walk or discovering artifacts at the museum.

Enjoy a tasty dinner at camp tonight.

Today we only drive around 60km. You may walk up to 10km today if you do the full Uluru base-walk. However, shorter Uluru walks are available.

On the final day of the tour, an early start is rewarded with a spellbinding Kata Tjuta sunrise.

Translating to the Pitjantjatjara word for ‘Many Heads’, the 36 domes of Kata Tjuta are a defining feature of the Red Centre landscape both topographically and spiritually. Rising 546 metres above the surrounding plain, its tip is the highest point for miles, while the site’s ridges and ravines are closely connected with numerous Indigenous creation-time stories. Many of these stories are kept secret from outsiders, but you’ll learn a little about the local Anangu culture and appreciate the beauty of their land on a rewarding hike.

Your outback adventure ends in the late morning on our return to Yulara. From here you will be catching an included bus transfer from Yulara to Alice Springs, arriving around 7pm.

This can include any of the following: Motor Car Falls, Moline Rockhole, Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), or Jim Jim Falls. There are many factors affecting accessibility although your guide will ensure you get the best experience possible.

Settle into your cabin and watch the rolling pastoral lands of South Australia from your window, or meet your fellow travellers in the lounge car. Before long some of the oldest rock formations in the world, the Flinders Ranges, come into view. As darkness envelops the rugged outback, it’s time to indulge in a regionally-inspired dinner and all-inclusive fine wines and beverages.

Begin with a freshly brewed coffee or juice as the day dawns at Marla, an outback outpost in the remote reaches of South Australia. It is here, deep inland, that you will enjoy a one of a kind experience, as you watch the desert come to life at sunrise. All aboard for brunch as you make your way through the MacDonnell Ranges to Alice Springs where a choice of Off Train Excursions awaits. Alice is an iconic Red Centre outpost. 1,500 kilometres from the nearest major city, it may be remote, but offers plenty to explore – home to doctors who fly, rivers that run dry, and a cast of colourful characters. Your time in the ‘capital out of the outback’ offers numerous opportunities to explore its historic legacy and unique environment.

Your day dawns in the tropical north. The pristine wilderness of Katherine is stirring and powerful, and you’ll have the chance to explore it from the water on an Off Train Experience. Cruise the jaw-dropping Nitmiluk Gorge, learn more about its ancient Indigenous rock paintings and gain insight into the culture of the traditional owners of Nitmiluk, the Jawoyn people.  As evening falls, arrive in Darwin to complete your epic Australian journey.

On your way, the next attraction is the Kings Canyon . Discover the Lost City and the Garden of Eden on a 6km hike in Kings Canyon. Admire and explore the towering walls and crevices of Watarrka National Park. The photo opportunities are endless in Kings Canyon so be sure to bring your camera.

There are astonishing views of the canyon from up high, while you sink down to ground level. It has very high walls around more for than 100 meters. Due to its high walls, you are normally discouraged to leave the walking tracks. As you hike along the tracks you can view the great majestic canyons. There are three walk tracks which you can follow as per your own ease and convenience. These are:

  • The two km walk loop is around an hour walk. It terraces the bottoms of the canyon and at the end, it reached to a platform from where you can view the canyon walls from above.
  • The six km walk traces the top of the canyon. The walk starts with a steep slope in the begging which is heart-pounding experience. It takes the tourist to the top of the canyon and thus gives an opportunity to view the canyon from above. Around half the way the tracks takes descend and leads to a waterfall. This waterfall is surrounded by plant life and is called the Garden of Eden.
  • The ultimate adventurers can take the 22 km long Giles Track. It connects the Kings Canyon to the Kathleen Springs.

A variety of the birds can be viewed from around the Canyon. After spending an adventurous day at the canyon the next thing is a warm cozy place to spend the night. We set up camp at the Uluru Kata Tjuta Aboriginal Cultural Center quickly before learning about local Aboriginal History.

Day 7 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Uluru / Ayers Rock

Your next stop is Uluru / Ayers Rock which is a large sandstone rock formation and a major Australian tourist attraction. The first Australian here are from the Pitjantjatjara   Anangu people. The area around this is webbed with the springs, waterholes, rock caves some paintings.

Both Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta have great cultural significance for the Anangu traditional landowners. Self discover about the local flora and fauna, bush foods and the Aboriginal Dream time stories of the area.

KataTuja also is known as Tholga lies around 25 km west of Uluru. The tourism in the area is supported in every way but the only downside is that the people are banned from climbing up to the Kata Tuja. Embrace the domes of Kata-Tjuta on your walk, while taking in the views of the open plains on the return walk.

Walpa Gorge

Sprawling out in an awe-inspiring horizon of jutting peaks and dipping valleys, Walpa Gorge is a bastion of natural beauty set amongst the beautiful Kata-Tjuta National Park. Stand at the edge of the world, breathe in the aromatic wilderness, and soak up the vast, incredible plains

Its sheer immensity dwarfs everything around it. Uluru (Ayers Rock) has acquired its reputation not just because it is such a unique landform, but also because of the effect the sun has on its colours and appearance. Sunrises and Sunsets cause changes to its colour from browns though oranges, reds to finally grey.

We start the day at dawn with a walk around Uluru’s base which takes about 3 1⁄2 hours. Walking through acacia woods and grassy clay pans, you’ll spot wildlife in waterholes, marvel at Uluru’s geological wonders, and learn more from your culturally accredited Groovy guide about Aboriginal interpretations. We relax on our campground later.

Uluru – Mutitjulu Waterhole

We drive from the front of Uluru around to the Kuniya car park, which is at the back of Uluru. From here you start your second Uluru guided walk to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. The caves containing rock art were used in the past by Anangu still alive today.

Moreover, once you get to the area don’t take pictures of everything you see. There are few areas restricted from being photographed. These areas have a direct linkage with the religious beliefs of the locals. There are a lot of places to stay near the Ayers Rock however some good places are Ayers Rock Resort Campground &  Outback Pioneer Hotel. Some good bars to refresh yourself after a long day, try visiting the Mangata Bistro & Bar or the Pira pool bar.

What to see

Listen to the local Warumungu people’s legend of’ Nyinkka’ at the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre, the spiky tailed goanna that shaped the city. This centre is considered to be one of the best in the territory and includes a gallery of regional indigenous art, cafe, and opportunities to learn more about Aboriginal life & history. Visit The Pebbles, a spectacular granite formation north of the city known to the Warumungu people as Kunjarra, the sacred women’s dancing site.

Tennant creek is just on the junction of the two highways and serves as a rest area for many of the tourists. You can rest at the Eldorado Motor Inn or the Bluestone Motor Inn . The foodie travellers also get their carving satisfied probably with a beer from the Sporties Club , Rocky`s Pizza, Top of Town Café or the Gimmy Chicken and Coffee. If you want a drink try the

Alice Springs to Banka Banka Station

Just north of Alice Springs is the Tropic of Capricorn. Further along the track are the Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu), a collection of magically balanced, gigantic rock formations. Our day will close at the historic Banka Banka Cattle Station, where we camp for the night. The historic cattle station was this region’s first pastoral operational lease and a World War II supply camp that provided meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables. The Ward family occupied and ran it and is still the site of a mudbrick homestead.

Day 11 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Palm forests around the hot springs offer a paradise backdrop, while in the distance you can hear the gentle gush of nearby waterfalls. There are plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities to have here as well, as the red flying fox Stay overnight at the Bitter Springs Cabins and Camping or the Mataranka Cabins and Camping .

Day 13 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Kakadu National Park

Your tour towards Darwin would not be complete without having the sight of the crocodiles basking in the mud and a variety of wildlife enjoying their own habitat. This is the park the route of which leads from Katherine George in the Nitmuilk National Park. The park is based on four major rivers the East Alligator River, the West Alligator River, the Wildman River & the entire South Alligator River.

This region is home to over 250 species of birds and has the Southern Hemisphere’s highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles. Look for the powerful crocs that rule this waterway, buffalo, birds and other wildlife. At the South Alligator River, our entrance to Kakadu National Park is a picturesque location for a picnic lunch.

Before our late afternoon arrival in Ubirr, there is an opportunity to buy Aboriginal arts and crafts at the Bowali Visitor Centre. Here you’ll see a wide range of ancient Aboriginal art that your guide will interpret. Learn the Rainbow Serpent story and climb the Nadab Lookout to Arnhem Land for panoramic views across the floodplain and beyond. Besides being a hub of natural habitat to numerous species, the area also has a diverse mining history.

Your Adelaide to Darwin coach tour is not complete without a climb to a rocky outlook with views across the floodplains on the moderately steep 250-meter track. Time your visit from the top for a spectacular, unforgettable tropical sunset. At Ubirr, there are three main rock art sites to experience. It takes about an hour to walk to Ubirr and is 1 kilometre from the car park via a circular walking track and it takes another 30 minutes to climb to the lookout.

Twin Falls Gorge

Twin Falls Gorge is a gorge of amazing beauty. The Twin Falls are also one of Kakadu National Park’s most famous sites, a place most visitors think about when visiting Kakadu. The shuttle takes you through the gorge, dropping you near the falls. You have to walk from there for about two minutes, over a few rocks and then over a boardwalk. You end up in a large pool at the bottom of the falls with a sandy beach.

Yellow Water Billabong

Get out on the Yellow Water as part of a cruise on a boat for a closer look at a rich wildlife variety. Jacana, egrets, jabiru, sea eagles, magpie geese and many other native species are among the vast range of resident birdlife. The billabong’s surface is dotted with lovely pink and white water lilies. Take the walk across the floodplains to a viewing platform at Home Billabong when the waters recede-a great place to enjoy an unforgettable sunset at the top end.

After all the excitement if you are looking for a drink try the Pine Creek or the Corroboree Park Tavern . There are some good places to stay over during the night like the Kakadu Lodge , Anbinik Kakadu resort or the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel.

Day 14 Adelaide to Darwin bus tours via Uluru

Litchfield National Park to Darwin

Marvel at the intriguing termite mounds and then swim, hike and explore Florence and Wangi Falls. Discover Buley Rockhole’s with many of its rock holes and cascading waterfalls before our return to Darwin.

Your trip would finally end once you enter the capital city of the northern territory situated on the Timor Sea. It would also be the end of the Stuart Highway on which you would have travelled such a great distance. The Darwin city serves as a gateway for the East Asian markets and countries to Australia. It would not be wrong to call it the metropolitan city of the country.  The city has two main beaches which are the Casuarina Beach and Mindil Beach.

End your tour on a high note with a drink at the Shenannigans or at the Monsoons Darwin . After that you enjoy your planned stay at the Darwin YHA – Melaleuca On Mitchell or at The Cavenagh Hotel . How Johan Botha went from elite international cricketer to running ultramarathons

Sport How Johan Botha went from elite international cricketer to running ultramarathons

Former cricketer Johan Botha stands with a wooden spoon with the letters 'DNF' written on it.

It's one o'clock in the morning, and Johan Botha is pounding the pavement in Dubai.

The former South African international cricketer was coaching at the International League T20 tournament, and had to get a run in for an ultra-marathon he had coming up.

"We had a game in Abu Dhabi and you know, you sit on the bus for an hour-and-a-half and play the game, come back for an hour-and-a-half," Botha said.

"We got back to the hotel after midnight, and then I went for a run.

"I did a three-hour run from 1am to 4am."

A cricket player named Johan Botha hits a shot while wearing a pink team uniform.

Botha was training for Herdy's Frontyard Ultra, an endurance race in Perth which requires runners to complete 6.7 kilometres an hour, every hour, until there's only one competitor remaining.

The former off-spinner completed 52 laps, running for more than two days.

"The first one I ever did was probably three years ago now, I did 20 laps," he said.

"You sort of think that was hard, and it got hard.

"But I think with these events, it gets hard. There's no way of getting around that."

After five Tests, 78 one-day internationals and 40 T20 internationals for South Africa, Botha is well acquainted with the rigours of professional sport.

And he is no stranger to endurance training, spending time while on tour riding his bike with triathletes.

Running fills the gaps

But in the past seven years, as his career wound down, running became more of a focus.

"I sort of realised towards the end that I would still love to compete," Botha said.

"It is definitely filling that gap, you know, now I love the training, I enjoyed the training of running pretty much, six or seven days a week."

A man named Johan Botha runs along a dirt track high fiving two women, one on either side of him.

Botha still works in cricket as a coach for the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL, and as a head coach for teams in various T20 tournaments across the globe.

But he sees running as almost another profession.

"Even though I don't get paid, I treat it as you know, you've got to do it as well as you can.

"You've got to get out every day, you've got to recover as well as you can, you've got to eat as well as you can too," 41-year-old Botha said.

"Obviously still coaching is my job, but the running fills the gaps between that."

Life and running

Married with two children and working, Botha said balancing running and life is an ever moving challenge, but not one that's insurmountable.

"I would say you definitely need an understanding wife," he said.

"It does take long hours, but I do try and not take up family time.

"When I've got a long run coming up, I try and get out early or try and fit it into the day when the kids are at school and Monica's at work.

"It can be done. It 100 per cent can be done. It doesn't just have to be at the perfect time."

Botha's family also help him on race day, crewing for him so he can focus on running.

His 13-year old son has even joined him on an Ultra, and will do a backyard event in South Australia in May.

Botha also leans on some of the best runners in the country for advice, with Perth's Phil Gore — himself a champion ultra runner — offering his insights when asked.

Phil's wife Gemma even crewed for Botha at the Perth race earlier this month.

Next challenge

Botha has his sights set on some ambitious targets in the future, with some of the most difficult runs in the United States on the horizon.

He wants to complete the Moab 240, Tahoe 200 and Cocodona 250, while a future project is also on his mind.

Botha is considering taking on the challenge of running from Darwin to Adelaide at some point, if he can partner with a charity.

Former cricketer Johan Botha poses for a selfie in a rural setting.

"So run from top to bottom of Australia, as a bit of a charity run," he said.

"But, you know, those things take a lot of planning, and it's got to be a charity run. I want to do it for something. It needs to be worthwhile."

For now though, Botha is preparing for two more Backyard Ultras, to see just how far he can go.

This morning we hike Dutchman’s Stern for stunning views of the Spencer Gulf and surrounding ranges and plains. We stop at a winery in the Clare Valley before cruising to Adelaide arriving at around 6:00pm.

What sort of camping is done on this trip?

Swag camping! A swag is a kind of bag that you can sleep in. It has a mattress and pillow inside and you can roll it up for storage. It has a flap you can put over your head for total cover but most people choose to fall asleep staring at the night sky!

Do I need a sleeping bag?

You will definitely want a sleeping bag in Winter as it can get quite cold at night, especially the further south you are and in the Red Centre, around Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. In summer it is advisable as it can still be cool at night. We advise to bring along your own sleeping bag, otherwise you can hire one for $50 on the Darwin to Alice Springs section and $30 on the Adelaide to Alice Springs section of the trip.

Will I be in the same group the whole trip?

No, this package is a combination of different tours put together and made into one convenient itinerary so that you get the best value trip and see as much as you can! This way you'll get to make as many friends as you can on your travels.

I've heard the flies are bad in summer. Is this true?

In the warmer months there can definitely be a lot of flies while travelling through the outback. It is advisable to bring a fly net in the warmer months.

What clothes do I need?

In summer the temperatures can be extremely hot when travelling through the outback. A shirt and shorts is all that is needed during these months though we recommend a light long sleeved top and light long pants (zip-off) to minimise your exposure to the sun. It can still get cool at night and in the morning so you will want a jumper as well.

Definitely bring swimmers as there will be opportunities to swim at some locations. Sunglasses, as well as sunscreen SPF 30+ or better, are also a necessity no matter what time of year.

During winter the temperatures can be mild during the day but cold at night and in the morning when travelling through the centre of Australia. You will want a mixture of warm and cool clothes for this time of year. Long pants, a good jumper, a beanie, gloves and warm socks are recommended for use at night and in the morning. Further north near Darwin the temperature will not be so cold.

At all times of the year you will need a hat, preferably wide brimmed.

Extra Costs:

$12.50 payable for Twin Falls Boat Shuttle if it is in season

What to bring:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Rain jacket
  • Insect repellent
  • A sense of adventure!

Luggage restrictions: 20 kg max

We advise to bring along your own sleeping bag, otherwise you can hire one for $50 on the Darwin to Alice Springs section and $30 on the Adelaide to Alice Springs section of the trip.
