Door stoppers, what to consider.

There are several types of portable door locks available today, and you’ll need to select the best option for your application. If you’re traveling, door strike locks are small and lightweight, making them easy to pack. Door stops or braces are another option for regular hinged doors, though they tend to be bigger, and some even have a built-in alarm that sounds if someone tries to open the door. For sliding doors, you’ll likely need a security bar, which are often too big to comfortably fit in a suitcase.

When buying a portable door lock, it’s important to ensure the product you select is compatible with your door. Some locks only work if the door has a specific type of door strike or gap of a certain size, so if possible, you’ll want to double-check these measurements before you buy.

How We Selected

To find the best portable door locks for a variety of situations, we looked for top-rated models in a range of styles. We aimed to find the best lock for a variety of situations and door types, evaluating products based on their installation requirements, materials, ease of use, and price. We read through dozens of user reviews, as well, taking note of how the product performs in real-life scenarios.

The Addalock Portable Door Lock is a top choice for use at home or while traveling. It has a compact, lightweight design that’s easy to pack into a carry-on bag, and it can be used on most doors that are hinged and swing inwards.

It's also a cinch to use: Just insert its claws into the door’s strike plate, then close the door. The red piece can then be attached to the metal component, preventing the door from being opened, even if someone has a key. It’s a great solution for apartments, dorms, and even Airbnbs, but some users do note that it doesn’t work on certain hotel doors.

If you only need a door lock for occasional use, this budget-friendly option will get the job done. It has a simple design that attaches to the door strike, plus it's reversible, with two openings that can be used on door strikes of different shapes.

This lock is compact enough to carry in your purse or briefcase, and it can be installed in just a few minutes. Once the red component is attached to the metal piece, no one will be able to open the door until the lock is removed.

The GE Door Stop alarm functions like a traditional door stop—you slide the sloped edge underneath the door, and it makes it harder (though not impossible) for someone to push the door open. But it adds an additional layer of security, thanks to a built-in alarm.

If the door is opened, the force will press down the top of the door stop, which activates a 120-decibel alarm. The unit requires a 9-volt battery for operation, and there’s a switch that allows you to deactivate the alarm as needed—important if you’re planning to travel with it.

In terms of versatility, it’s hard to beat the Master Lock Door Security Bar. This unique bar can be used on both hinged and sliding doors, and it adjusts from 27.5 to 42 inches long.

The bar is made from heavy-duty 20-gauge steel, and when it’s used on a hinged door, it has a removable head that cradles the door handle, as well as a pivoting rubber foot that braces against the floor. To use it on a sliding door, you simply remove the head and adjust its length so it fits snugly inside the door track.

Whether you’re staying at a hotel, Airbnb, or even a hostel, you can give yourself peace of mind while traveling with this portable door lock. The design is more compact and lightweight than other door strike locks — small enough to stash it in your pocket. Plus, the design works well on most hotel doors, according to reviewers. It’s compatible with door bolts of all sizes and doors of all thicknesses, and it can be set up in just a few seconds.

The DoorJammer Portable Door Lock is a brace-style device that works on any inward-swinging door—no need to worry about whether it will fit onto the door strike.

One side slides underneath the bottom of the door, and the other has an adjustable foot that creates pressure, preventing the door from being pushed open. The brace comes with an extension foot and a three-size keyring to fit into a door gap, plus a travel bag. It can be used on any type of flooring, including carpeting, hardwood, tile, and more.

If you want to prevent a deadbolt from being opened from the exterior, the LOKmate Deadbolt Guard is a handy temporary solution. It works on inward-swinging doors that have a deadbolt on either the right or left side, and it can be adjusted to accommodate multiple lock positions, including horizontal, vertical, and diagonal deadbolts.

In terms of installation, it snaps on quickly thanks to its magnetic design—no tools needed—and it even folds flat when not in use. The piece is made of plastic, which may be a drawback for some.

Many security bars for sliding doors are designed to be permanently installed, but this one from Lakeside Collection simply has rubber tips on either end to keep it in place. It’s made from a combination of steel and PVC, and it can be adjusted between 26 and 48 inches. The rubber tips ensure it won’t scratch the door frame, and it’s quick and easy to install and remove.

If you need a reliable lock for an office building or school, the Barracuda Door Defense System is extremely heavy duty, offering a high level of protection.

It’s made from steel with a powder-coated finish, and there are several sizes available to fit different door jams. The brace slides underneath the door and its side pieces latch onto the jams, making it virtually impossible to force the door open. It doesn’t require permanent installation, and it can be deployed in a matter of seconds.

The Wundermax Door Stoppers are a light-duty option to provide a little added security to your home or accommodations. These door stoppers are made from odorless rubber, and they can be used on any type of flooring.

They’re available in several pack sizes, ranging from one to six, and if you buy multiple, they include handy clips that let you hook two together to fit in large door gaps. Plus, the stoppers come with stick-on holders, in case you use it on the same door frequently.

Feeling safe when you’re at home or traveling can sometimes be difficult. Whether it’s through installing a smart lock in your home, keeping pepper spray readily available or doing a double-check for spy cameras in your rental — feeling secure anywhere you go is important. For those who live in rental properties, knowing that landlords or former tenants could have easy access to your home can create some unease. When staying in rentals or hotels, guests may feel uncomfortable knowing that employees and owners could enter their room at any time. And for those who live with nosy roommates, being able to lock the bedroom door can provide an added feeling of security and help solve arguments over privacy once and for all. That’s why a portable door lock is a great item that can help users feel safe when at home or traveling.

It’s important to note that portable door locks should only be used in legally approved manners. Ensure all the members of your home know how to remove the lock in case of a fire and always use precautions when using a portable door lock.

What Do Portable Door Locks Do?

Portable door locks act as a reinforcement for locking doors and can also be used on doors that don’t have locks, like interior doors. We’ve included styles of portable door locks that can be used from the inside of the home or room as well as portable door locks that can be used on the outside. These locks provide an additional level of security and can act as a deterrent for intruders — whether that’s a busybody roommate or an unscrupulous landlord.

BEST OVERALL

Feel safe even when traveling by using the Original Portable Door Lock by Addalock. Installation takes only a few seconds and provides an added level of security in any hotel room or rental. Metal claws are inserted into the strike plate when the door is open. Once the door is closed, the Addalock is installed, making it impossible for those with a key to open the door from the outside. Designed to be used on the inside of a door to slow intruders and keep out people with a key, the Addalock is ideal for use in hotels, college dorms or home rentals when strangers may have access to your door.

Pros: The Addalock comes with a storage pouch for protection when the lock is not in use.

Cons: The Addalock may not work on doors with large deadbolts.

Portable Door Lock by Addalock

$17.95 $31.99 44% off, 2. travelers security lock.

The Travelers Safety Lock is the most secure option on the list, but also the most expensive. It’s constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum that will stand up to serious pressure. This portable door lock can be installed on right- or left-facing doors and is incredibly easy to install. By redistributing any force applied to the door to the lock and doorframe, this lock provides serious protection from intruders. An included carrying case makes it easy to travel with.

Pros:  Heavy-duty materials provide reliable security while traveling. Easy to install on virtually any door. Protects against keys and forced entry.

Cons : More expensive than other travel locks. Users with mobility issues may have trouble installing this lock.

Travelers Security Lock

3. calslock portable door lock for travel.

QUALITY PICK

The Calslock Portable Door Lock for Travel provides peace of mind when home or traveling. The small lock is the size of two pens but provides a sturdy second lock over a deadbolt. The Calslock can be used by hooking the lock into the strike plate and then squeezing and pulling back the slide bar when the door is open. Once the door is closed, users simply squeeze the slide bar and push it against the door. The Calslock works best on doors with a small gap between the frame and the door. Like the Addalock, the Carslock is ideal for use in places where multiple people may have access to your door, including hotels, dorms and rentals.

Pros: The Calslock will provide resistance against intruders pushing in on the door and will create a loud noise that can alert sleeping residents.

Cons: The Calslock only works on doors that swing inwards. The serrated edge makes this lock unsafe for homes where small children can reach the door handle.

4. prime-line door knob lock-out device.

HONORABLE MENTION

Help prevent others from accessing the lock on your doorknob with the Prime-Line Door Knob Lock-Out Device. The lock fits over a round doorknob and uses a key to prevent the turning of the knob and access to the keyhole. The cylinder inside the lock is held in place with an O-ring and can be removed when the device is unlocked and open. The Prime-Line can be installed in seconds and is made with a durable, diecast construction.

Pros: Customers can use the Prime-Line to prevent prying landlords from entering their homes without permission. Because the lock fits over the doorknob, the renter isn’t changing the locks, which is against many rental policies.

Cons: The Prime-Line can only be used on round doorknobs.

Pros: Made of hefty materials, portable and easy to use.

You can use it with carpet as well as laminated floors, and it takes only a few seconds to set up. The small neoprene extension foot only needs about 0.3 inches of clearance to work so it’ll work in most spaces, and it can be used with high-threshold doors. It weighs only 8 ounces but forms a powerful barricade to keep you safe.

Pros: Works on nearly all doors and floor types, strong barricade, requires no tools to install and can be easily removed in an emergency.

Cons: If your door has a large gap between the bottom and the floor this lock might not work.

DoorJammer Portable Door Lock Brace

$19.00 $29.99 37% off, 8. emdmak door stop alarm.

It can be used while traveling just as easily as it can be used at home, and the alarm is 120db, so it’ll scare away anyone who comes in contact with it. The door wedges have three sensitivity levels you can set — high, medium and low, and they’re powered on 9V batteries that can be used for a year under typical circumstances. The installation is super simple, and they can be used on any door with a small gap underneath it.

Pros: Alarm alerts you to the intruder, super easy to install, sensitivity levels are handy, battery lasts for an entire year.

One response

Hello. Your page on portable hotel locks is not very useful, as it features no pictures. What I’m seeking is a kind of portable lock which installs from the OUTSIDE (and requires a key to open), to keep others from entering (e.g., while shopping). The regular locks of this kind install from the INSIDE and WON’T suit my needs.

The device’s low battery indicator keeps you informed of its readiness. And worry not; power outages don’t matter here. The alarm will work even when the lights go out. Backed by over 45 years in the security industry and developed by SABRE, a trusted brand worldwide, this alarm is more than a gadget; it’s a dependable partner in your journey. Ideal for main doors, bedrooms, apartments, dorm rooms, or hotels, this compact alarm brings peace of mind to your doorstep.

What we liked:

  • Travel-friendly size
  • High sound range (up to 1,500 feet)
  • Suitable for various door types
  • Trustworthy brand

What we didn’t like:

  • Batteries not included
  • Limited to indoor use

#2 – SABRE Door Handle Alarm

SABRE Door Handle Alarm

  • Extremely loud 110-decibel alarm
  • Vibration-triggered sensor
  • Easy DIY installation
  • Compatible with Home Security System

In an increasingly unpredictable world, the demand for simple yet effective home security solutions has never been higher. The SABRE Door Handle Alarm proves to be a significant step towards a secure home without all the fuss of intricate installation. Measuring at 0.5 x 5.5 x 2.75 inches and weighing just 2.88 ounces, this unit is designed with portability in mind. With an alarm as loud as 110-decibel, it can be heard up to 680 feet away, ensuring that an intrusion does not go unnoticed.

SABRE-Door-Handle-Alarm

Let’s take a look at how it works. The alarm hangs off the doorknob and gets triggered by vibration when someone tries to touch the handle. The three adjustable settings – off, chime, alarm – offer flexibility in use. The alarm mode includes a 30-second delay to minimize false triggering, and it sounds instantly if the doorknob is touched after this delay.

But in the fast-paced lives we lead, who has the time or patience for complicated installation procedures? SABRE’s Door Handle Alarm offers easy DIY installation, requiring mere seconds to set up. It’s an ideal solution for various locations, including homes, apartments, hotel rooms, and even dorms. And for your peace of mind, it’s backed by SABRE, a brand known for quality and reliability in the security industry for over 45 years. Based on our testing, it seems to serve its purpose well, with excellent loudness to deter potential intruders.

SABRE-Door-Handle-Alarm

However, we found the sensitivity and battery life to be inconsistent. But considering its main objective, it manages to deliver an additional layer of protection where needed most. So what’s the final word on the SABRE Door Handle Alarm ? Well, it’s compact, it’s loud, and it’s portable. It offers a straightforward and cost-effective solution to enhance security without a significant investment. But is it foolproof? Probably not. Does it do the job? Most certainly, yes.

  • Highly portable
  • Effective loud alarm
  • Trusted brand
  • Versatile use
  • Sensitivity inconsistencies
  • Quick battery depletion

  • Dual protection
  • Easy installation

HNHMT-Upgraded-Portable-Door-Lock-&-Door-Stop-Alarm

The installation process is divided into three simple steps. Step 1 involves opening the door and inserting the metal claws into the door strike. No screws or nails are needed, making it a tool-free process. Step 2 requires inserting a moving rod into the butterfly hole and jamming it down. In step 3, the portable lock is set in place, all set to fend off any unwanted visitors. We tested this device on several doors, both interior and exterior, and found it to be quite effective.

HNHMT-Upgraded-Portable-Door-Lock-&-Door-Stop-Alarm

The door lock attachment provides solid security, and it fits most doors seamlessly. The door stopper alarm is sensitive and loud, even at lower settings, which can be a double-edged sword. It ensures that an intruder will be noticed but also means you might wake everyone up if you bump it accidentally! However, it’s worth mentioning that the alarm wedge door stopper might not always work as expected. There were instances where the alarm didn’t function, even after battery replacements.

HNHMT-Upgraded-Portable-Door-Lock-&-Door-Stop-Alarm

Though there have been some hiccups with missing parts in the package and difficulty in reaching customer service, the company offers a 1-year warranty. This may provide some peace of mind. The HNHMT portable door lock & door stop alarm serves as an unobtrusive yet potent safety tool. It’s easy to install, lightweight, and can be quite effective. But a watchful eye might be needed on the alarm system to ensure it’s in working order.

  • Effective door lock
  • Easy to install
  • Inconsistent alarm
  • Limited customer support

It features buttons that are a breeze to access, each offering intuitive operation. As such, it’s a welcome addition to homes, apartments, dorm rooms, or offices. During our testing, we found that the body and magnet are easily mounted on windows or doorframes, thanks to the included double-sided tape.

Plus, the wire-free design makes it ideal for temporary dwellings or even RVs. The alarm is powered by 4 LR44 batteries, which come included, so there’s no fussing around with complex wiring. We also like that you’re afforded lots of flexibility here. You can switch it off if you are frequently going in and out of a door. And you can switch between a loud alarm and a chime based on your preferences. This alarm is ideal for things like keeping little ones out of closets and other personal areas.

GE-Personal-Security-Window-and-Door-Alarm

The loudness might be startling for some, but the adaptability of the device and the peace of mind it provides outweigh this minor drawback. GE’s Personal Security Window and Door Alarm offers a straightforward and affordable solution for a whole host of security needs. It’s a cinch to install and it is adaptable. This one should be a solid choice for many.

  • Loud and attention-grabbing
  • Versatile design

Best door security bar reviews

1. buddybar door jammer: best overall.

We found the Buddybar Door Jammer to be one of the toughest devices out there since it's made with steel parts—it's going to take a lot of force to bust this door jammer.

But it's pricey and it can also be tough on your doors if you're not careful.

Made of 16-gauge steel without plastic pieces that can easily snap, this door bar is one of the sturdiest we've found.

It can hold up to 2,560 pounds of force, putting it miles ahead of its 350-pound competitors. One video demonstrated the strength of Buddybar by using it to jack up a pickup truck. (We don't recommend it for that purpose.)

While you'll have to fiddle with push-button adjustment on most other security bars, the Buddybar is designed with a lever lock, similar to what you might see on a tension-mounted baby gate. Lift the lever to release the tension and lengthen the bar, then lower it to ratchet the tension for a snug fit between your floor and door handle.

The downside? At over 8 pounds, the Buddybar isn't a security device for travel, and if you have trouble lifting, you might have a difficult time setting it up. It can also be hard on your door if you're not careful with the tension.

A truly durable bar like this one will set you back over a hundred bucks, but we think its top-notch quality justifies the steep price tag.

2. Nightlock Security Lock Door Barricade: Best permanent fixture

The Nightlock Door Barricade works like a vertical doorstop near the base of your door. It's made of solid aluminum, and it's a great choice if you don't want to mess around with trying to jam a bar under your doorknob. But it's a more permanent door security solution, so it does require some installation.

Unlike traditional door security bars that are only temporary or that can slip on a hard floor, the Nightlock Door Barricade base plate is screwed into the floor. The vertical barricade rail slides into the base plate, creating a barrier that prevents the door from opening.

Since it is more permanent, we like that it comes in a variety of color options, including bright brass, brushed nickel, and dark bronze.

To install the Nightlock, you only need to screw in three screws. You can use the screws that come with it, or you can beef up security even more by purchasing three 3-inch #14 steel screws. You'll probably want a power screwdriver to do the job.

Because of the Nightlock's design, you need to make sure you have at least a half-inch of clearance between the bottom of the door and the floor. You might also have some trouble with the device if you have thick carpeting, because you'll need enough clearance on either side of the base plate to slide the rail in and out.

The Nightlock isn't a good travel option and may not work for renters either. It's also designed for swinging doors, so you'll have to find another solution for sliding glass doors .

Because the base plate for the Nightlock has to be screwed into the floor, it's not a good option for renters or travelers.

Potentially, yes. But you'll need a type of security door lock that anchors to the base of the windowsill like the Nightlock. You can also find locks for windows or sensors that beep if a window opens.

3. Master Lock Security Bar: Budget pick

If you don't have a ton of cash to spend on beefing up your home's security but you still want an added layer of protection for sliding glass doors or swinging doors, the Master Lock Security Bar provides extra reinforcement at a low price.

It doesn't rank as high in quality as our other top picks, but it could be a deterrent and buy you some precious time in case of an attempted intrusion.

The Master Lock Security Bar wins major points for affordability, versatility, and ease of use.

At less than twenty bucks, it's a great option if you're on a tight budget or you just need an inexpensive, temporary solution.

You can easily remove the Y-shaped yoke on to make it fit securely into the track of a sliding patio door, and vice versa—no tools required. And the pivoting ball joint on the Master Lock ensures the device has full contact with the floor even if you don't line it up perfectly.

While we like that Master Lock only weighs about 2.5 pounds, its inexpensive and lightweight construction seems to cause problems for some people. Some users say that the metal spring-loaded pin used to adjust the length of the bar may loosen and allow the bar to collapse and fail. Plus, the plastic yoke can break under pressure or if dropped.

Finally, the Master Lock is advertised to have a padded foot, but several reviewers said their product didn't come with a cover for the hard plastic foot. The hard plastic can scratch and damage floors, so we recommend contacting the company if you receive a product without padding.

4. Securityman 2-in-1 Security Bar: Best alarm

travel door stopper

If you want a door jammer that not only stops invaders but sends them running by sounding the alarm, check out the Securityman 2-in-1 Security Bar. Its 120 dB siren goes off when it senses vibration.

The Securityman 2-in-1 also has the largest adjustment range of all the door jammers on our list, adjusting from a height of 22.25 inches to a full 43.7 inches.  Its design is similar to the Master Lock, with a pivoting foot and a plastic, Y -shaped yoke at the top, but it's a little more expensive.

5. Doorjammer Door Lock: Best for travel

The DoorJammer Portable Door Security Device is made of lightweight aluminum and it's compact, making it ideal for travelers. It's easy to use—just slide the lip under the door, then screw the foot down until it makes snug contact with the floor.

The Doorjammer travel security device is ideal for hotel rooms, dorms , or simple standard doors, but it's not invincible. It isn't compatible with French doors (or at least both of them) or sliding glass doors. And you'll also have to make sure you install it on the inward-moving part of the door.

If you rent and can't make adjustments to your home, door jams like the Buddybar are easy solutions for additional burglar proofing. Parents can also use these security devices to reinforce childproofing.

Whatever you want to keep in or out, adding a door security bar, door jammer, or patio door lock is an affordable way to reinforce your entrances.

Door jammer FAQ

Can i use door security bars on my windows.

It depends on the size and type of window. If you have a wide window that slides horizontally, then a sliding door bar jammer will work as long as it fits. We don’t recommend using a bar jammer on a window that lifts vertically, because the bar will be standing on end and could fall out easily.

Can I use door security bars to secure my doors when I’m not home?

Door security bars are designed to be locked from the inside. You can secure them before you leave the house, but you’ll have to exit through a door that doesn’t have a security bar, like your garage door.

How do I prevent my door jammer from sliding on my floor?

Make sure that both the foot of the door jammer and the floor are clean and free from debris. This will create more friction between the surfaces and keep the foot from sliding. Double-check the bar’s positioning to ensure the foot is in full contact with the floor and the yoke is placed firmly under the door’s handle.

Why do I need security bars if I already have good door locks?

If you’ve lived in your home for a while, chances are good that you’ve probably given out some keys for babysitters, housekeepers, house-sitters, or dog walkers. Landlords and handymen also have keys to apartments and rentals. Using a door security bar guarantees that when you’re home, the only people coming through the door are people you choose to allow in, even if they have keys. A security bar is also just a good way to add an extra layer of protection to exterior doors.

Are there other ways to give my entry doors more security?

One of the weakest points on any exterior doorframe is the strike plate, or the place where the deadbolt goes into the frame. Replacing the screws in your strike plates with 3-inch screws is a great way to increase your door’s security. Another smart option is to install a reinforcing kit like the  Strikemaster II  to prevent kick-ins and forced entry.

05K9920 - Veritas Traveller's Doorstop

Description

In response to a request for an improved door wedge, we developed this model for travellers visiting areas where hotel security and key control are often inadequate. It is a solid wedge of aluminum with a hardened steel adjustment and anti-slip screw.

To use it, you just slide the wedge under the door and elevate it with the screw until the door is solidly wedged. Anyone attempting entry causes the door to wedge tighter in the frame while the pointed screw keeps the wedge from shifting. The screw can be used with concrete subfloors as well as the traditional carpet-covered subfloors.

It does not damage carpeting unless there is an attempted forced entry; it then penetrates the subfloor as the pressure on the wedge increases. But then, which would you prefer, a dent in the subfloor or an unwanted visitor? The lever handle gives you substantial mechanical advantage, making it easy to turn the screw.

It takes less than a minute to install or remove. For hotel rooms with a flimsy lock or chain safety restraint, the traveller’s doorstop substantially increases peace of mind. It weighs only 7 oz and comes in a compact (1" × 1" × 7") carrying case. Made in Canada.

Portable door locks can give travelers extra comfort and protection. Here’s how to choose one.

As the pandemic eases, the prospect of staying in unfamiliar places has become both exciting and unnerving for many former travel enthusiasts. It’s important to feel safe, especially when it’s time to rest after a packed day of sightseeing or adventuring. One way to add an extra layer of protection against unwanted intrusions is to purchase a portable door lock. Unlike exterior locks that open with a key, portable door locks can be used only inside a room and come in a variety of forms, including keyed contraptions, metal plates, door stoppers and noise alarms.

These devices are marketed to people who want extra security but don’t have control over what kind of locking mechanism is used on a door: apartment renters, dorm dwellers and travelers. Before you purchase one, experts say, you should consider why you want it and what kind will meet your needs.

Reasons to purchase

“There’s a lot of psychology and emotion involved in feeling safe,” says Rebecca Edwards, a security expert with SafeWise , which analyzes national crime and safety trends and reviews related products. The pandemic has made us more proactive about protecting ourselves in general, she says: “We’re already thinking about taking more control over the environment and the threat that it presents to us.”

And if you’ve had a specific experience “that makes you feel worried, or afraid, or more vulnerable, having the extra thing sometimes just helps you relax and get some sleep, Edwards says. People who have experienced a crime or know someone who has “are astronomically more likely to employ extra security measures.”

Higher prices and hard-to-find reservations: What to know about outdoor adventures this summer

Where you stay matters, too. In a large hotel, you probably don’t need a portable door lock because the rooms probably have deadbolts on the inside, says Leyla Giray Alyanak, a journalist and avid explorer who lives in rural eastern France and created a website, Women on the Road, to share tips and resources with other solo female travelers.

Over the years, Alyanak has visited 96 countries and stayed in all types of accommodations, including luxury hotels, secluded Airbnbs and a guesthouse in Tanzania where, due to high rates of neighborhood theft, the owner locked the doors at night and went to sleep with the master key. So far, Alyanak has not used a portable door lock in a major hotel, and she hasn’t experienced a problem.

But hotels are falling out of favor with some travelers because of coronavirus concerns. Even if you’re fully vaccinated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends vacation rentals as a “safer” option than hotels because they pose a lower risk of coming into contact with people outside your household. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is expecting a surge in summer 2021 bookings.

While Airbnbs , Vrbos and other private rental units can feel safer from an infection standpoint, they carry other security risks. These units don’t always have the heavy-duty deadbolts that are standard at most hotels. Also, Airbnbs often employ smart locks linked to a specific code, and you can’t be sure the owner has updated the code between guests, says Derek Kiser, a Houston construction professional who has worked with doors, locks and associated hardware for more than a decade. Kiser established a website called Door Security Group to help consumers understand home security products.

Four seasons, four stunning national parks

Even if a room has secondary locking mechanisms — such as security chains or swinging latches attached to the door and frame — Kiser cautions against relying on them. Because these pieces are held in place only by screws, they’re easy to dislodge with some force if a door is cracked open. And if you’re renting a single room in a house where other guests are coming and going, “you’re definitely going to want more security,” says Kiser.

Although hostels, bed-and- breakfasts, Vrbos and Airbnbs present a higher break-in risk than a large hotel — where in addition to deadbolts, the building might have cameras and other security measures to deter criminals — the chance of an incident is small, Edwards says. The bigger risk is that someone can access your room when you’re not there and steal your valuables. This, too, is relatively rare, but “that kind of crime is far more common than someone coming in to attack you,” Edwards says.

The bottom line, security experts say, is that unless you’re staying in a big hotel, it’s smart to bring along a portable door lock just in case — even if you don’t end up using it. And regardless of your accommodation, packing a lock is a good idea for any international travel. “You’re usually going to be far less familiar with the type of area, and you’re not going to know if you picked a safe part of town or not,” Edwards says. Plus, it may be more difficult to find and purchase a lock once you arrive at your destination.

What to look for

Though portable door lock options are numerous, it’s important to focus on ease of use — both for installation and removal in case of an emergency. Alyanak advises travelers to keep it simple. One low-tech strategy that has worked for her: bringing a plastic doorstop to wedge underneath the door when she turns in for the evening. “They’re light; they don’t weigh anything. You can stick it in a shoe,” she says.

Whatever product you choose, it’s best if it comes in one piece, Kiser says. On his website, he reviews 10 portable door locks . If you’re traveling by plane, he recommends checking that your lock is TSA-compliant and won’t be confiscated if you pack it in carry-on luggage. For instance, door security bars such as the Buddybar Door Jammer are extremely effective against both forcible and unforced entry but probably aren’t allowed in carry-on bags, Kiser says.

A popular option is the Addalock , which is small and, at $17.95, fairly inexpensive. The device recently gained a lot of attention on TikTok as more people worked from home and wanted additional security, inspiring videos such as this one . The Addalock has a steel piece that’s inserted into the door strike, then locked into place with a handle. It takes less than a minute to install, and like a doorstop, it’s easy to uninstall under emergency conditions. Another option is the DoorJammer portable door brace, which is priced at $29.99 and fits underneath the door. It’s extremely secure, Kiser says, though potentially trickier to remove in a hurry.

Some products not only make it more difficult for someone to enter your room from outside but also feature alarms to further discourage intruders. Sabre’s $13.99 Door Stop Alarm emits a 120-decibel noise if it senses pressure from a door opening inward.

One caveat: All of the above options are designed for inward-swinging doors. Securing doors that open toward the outside, such as those in motel rooms, is more challenging. Fortunately, you don’t always need a physical barrier to keep out unwanted visitors. Criminals prefer not to draw attention to themselves, so devices that simply sound alarms if a door is jiggled can be effective deterrents.

These motion-sensor alarms are suitable for both inward- and outward-swinging doors. Because they hang on a knob or handle without restricting door movement, you don’t need to worry about uninstalling them during an emergency. One example is the Sabre Door Handle Alarm , which costs about $10.

Alyanak decided to use a motion sensor alarm in her room after a fellow guest’s shoes were stolen at the backpackers’ hostel where she was staying in South Africa. These devices produce a piercing sound loud enough to wake you, your neighbors and the front desk, too. That’s usually enough to scare off a wrongdoer, says Alyanak, because “the last thing they want is a hotel manager to come by.”

Whatever kind of lock you choose may be less important than simply having one. Packing a portable door lock or alarm can help you feel more prepared and comfortable heading into that long-awaited vacation. “The biggest thing that security measures and locks and extra things do for us is make us feel safe, so that we can let our guard down and relax,” says Edwards. Even if the lock remains tucked away in your suit case for the entire trip, you’ll feel better knowing it’s there if you need it.

5 Easy Ways to Secure Your Hotel Room

Inexpensive, portable safety devices to take with you when you travel

travel door stopper

 TripSavvy /  Julie Bang

Are you worried about the security of your hotel room when you travel? You never really know who else has a key to your room, or how good the locks and deadbolts actually are.

Luckily, there are several easy, inexpensive ways to secure the room more effectively. Here are five of the best.

The simplest way to add extra security to your hotel room is with a rubber door wedge, and many travelers swear by them. They're cheap, take up almost no space in your bag, and can be set up in just a few seconds. You simply place the thin end under the door jam; then gently kick the wedge into place to secure it.

Door wedges work best on hard surfaces like wood or tile, although some do come with a Velcro strip to stop them from sliding on carpet. For extra security, you can also buy models that come with an alarm that will sound when the wedge is disturbed.

The door you're securing has to open inwards for the wedge to be effective. Most hotel doors do, but it's something to bear in mind.

Portable Door Locks

Another straightforward approach to securing your room is by using a portable door lock. These come in several shapes and styles, but they all work in a similar way, preventing the door from opening inwards. Again, for that reason, they won't protect you when the door to your room opens out into the corridor.

Most portable locks have one piece that fits into the metal plate where the existing latch or lock goes, and another that sits across the back of the door. When locked in place, these prevent the door from opening unless someone physically breaks it down—not the most subtle of approaches.

A few portable locks take a different approach, with a piece that slides under the door jam, and a plate that screws down onto the floor.

When someone tries to open the door, the horizontal force is transferred into vertical pressure that secures the lock more tightly in place. Like door wedges, they work best on hard surfaces. You'll get some protection if your room has carpeted floors, but not as much.

Motion Detection Alarm

If you'd like to protect more than just the entry door to your room, consider a motion detection alarm. These infrared sensors can be placed facing a window, door, or anywhere else in the room (other than your bed), and will alarm when they detect movement.

Make sure you choose a model that has sufficient range (at least 10 feet, but more is better), and will automatically re-arm itself if you're planning on using it when you're out of the room. If you're protecting a window, be aware of flapping curtains and swaying tree branches when choosing the right position for the alarm.

Some can also be used as personal security devices, with loud alarms that can be quickly activated in an emergency, so look for that feature if it's important to you.

Travel Door Alarm

While it won't prevent access to the room, a door alarm should scare away all but the most determined of thieves. There are different versions, but a common type hangs from the door handle, with two metal prongs or blades that are pushed between the door and its frame.

When the door opens, the prongs come apart, and a loud alarm sounds. It's a simple but effective technique, with the advantage that it will work on any door type, including those that open outwards. These alarms typically only take a few seconds to set up, so you don't need to spend ages messing around every time you leave or come back to the room.

The Lock Locker

Finally, if your door has a deadbolt, but you're concerned about staff and others still having access with a spare key, the Lock Locker will help set your mind at ease. It's a two-part device, with a long flat section that fits around the handle and a round piece that fits over most deadbolts.

Set both pieces up, combine the two, and you've got a system that makes it pretty much impossible for anyone to open the deadbolt from the outside, whether they have a key or not

While traveling solo can be very rewarding, it can also feel a little scary. If you're looking for a way to have added security and peace of mind on your trips, one flight attendant may have found the solution with door stop alarms .

TikTok user @flywithmerm often shares with her 181,00 followers the tips and tricks she's learned from traveling the world with her job. Recently she called these portable safety devices one of her "travel must-haves" because these clever gadgets give you an extra layer of protection anywhere you go.

They may look like your average door stopper, but the safety device will actually set off an alarm when triggered, quickly alerting you if someone is tampering with your door. "If you stay in hotels a lot, or AirBnB's a lot, this is perfect," she said. "You place it underneath your door, but it's very sensitive. It has three levels of volume, and trust me this will wake up the deepest sleeper if anyone tries to get in your room," said @flywithmerm in her video.

After sharing the security door stoppers, the TikTok video quickly went viral , racking up more than 5.2 million views and 405,000 likes from users who became interested in getting one for themselves. "I need one," wrote one commenter. "Add to wishlist," said another.

To buy: amazon.com , $9

While @flywithmerm didn't specify exactly which option she uses herself, she did note that she bought it on Amazon, which luckily has a large selection to choose from. Even better, they are all actually affordable. You can get a singular alarm for as little as $9 or a four-pack for only $19. Shoppers love how easy they are to use, and there's no setup involved. You just need to pop in a battery and then place the stopper under your door.

Most Amazon reviewers say they use the door stoppers when they travel, but others say they like to use them at home too. A few even report that the alarms work great for children or sleepwalkers, since they will alert their loved ones that they may have wandered off.

A reduction in national insurance would be a "union tax cut", the prime minister has said ahead of the budget next week.

Rishi Sunak told journalists at the Scottish Conservative conference in Aberdeen on Friday that while he could not comment on what the chancellor Jeremy Hunt will announce on 6 March, he could see the case for trimming the levy - which is paid by workers across the UK - over income tax.

When asked about the fact a cut in the headline rate of income tax may not benefit voters in Scotland if the SNPgovernment chooses not to pass it on, he said national insurance had been cut in Januarybecause it is a "tax on work" and benefits all parts of the nation.

"I'm sure people will appreciate that I can't comment on any fiscal policy in advance of the budget," he said.

"But to your broader point, the chancellor and UK government chose to cut national insurance, for lots of reasons but first and foremost because it's a tax on work and I believe in a country and society where hard work is rewarded."

He added: "It's also important to us to be a government that delivers for people in every part of the United Kingdom.

"It's a union tax cut and a tax cut for everyone in work and the contrast between what we're doing and what the SNP are doing couldn't be starker.

"I want to make life easier for people, I want to give them the peace of mind there's a brighter future for them and their families."

Reflecting on the impact of the re-election of left-wing firebrand George Galloway to parliament, Sky's deputy political editor Sam Coates  says the big question going forward will be the extent to which the Israel-Hamas war continues to shake the kaleidoscope of British politics.

He says the prime minister was "quite explicit" earlier that one of the reasons he made his address on the steps of Downing Street was because Mr Galloway won the Rochdale by-election.

Mr Galloway's controversial campaign saw him focus heavily on the Israel-Hamas war.

Mr Sunak described the result as "beyond alarming".

Sam says: "It looks as if already you've got the political parties, the main political leaders, dancing to the tune of George Galloway."

He notes that Sir Keir Starmer apologised to the people of Rochdale earlier today, saying Mr Galloway "only won because Labour didn't stand a candidate".

Reflecting on the impact Mr Galloway will have in parliament, he says he is going to "all out try and cause difficulty for the Labour Party".

Sam says he will also "introduce on to the floor of the House Commons language, particularly about the Middle East, particularly about Israel, that we do not hear other politicians use".

Mr Galloway gave Sam his first, colourful reaction to Rishi Sunak's speech earlier, telling him: "I despise the prime minister" (see post at 18.08).

Rishi Sunak has railed against "extremist forces trying to tear us apart" during a Downing Street address to the nation.

The prime minister said there has been a "shocking increase in extremist disruption and criminality" and added that "now our democracy itself is a target".

He also described the Rochdale by-election result on Thursday night as "beyond alarming", and claimed "our streets have been hijacked by small groups who are hostile to our values".

His surprise speech came after the victory of maverick politician George Galloway in the Greater Manchester seat, following a campaign dominated by the highly-emotive issue of Gazaand dogged by accusations of abuse and intimidation.

In response, Mr Galloway told Sky News he "despised" the prime minister and did not care what he thought as he had won "a free and fair election".

Community tensions in the UK have heightened against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas conflict, triggered by the militant attack on 7 October.

In the face of ongoing pro-Palestinian protests, MPs have spoken of their experiences of receiving death threats and their concerns for the safety of their families, prompting the government to announce an extra £31m to protect elected representatives.

Read more here:

Sir Keir Starmer has given his reaction to Rishi Sunak's Downing Street address (see posts beginning at 17.47).

"The prime minister is right to advocate unity and to condemn the unacceptable and intimidatory behaviour that we have seen recently," the Labour leader says.

"It is an important task of leadership to defend our values and the common bonds that hold us together.

"Citizens have a right to go about their business without intimidation and elected representatives should be able to do their jobs and cast their votes without fear or favour.

"This is something agreed across the parties and which we should all defend."

By Matthew Thompson, political correspondent

When we got the news of a last-minute speech from Rishi Sunak on the steps of Downing Street, the rumour mill went into overdrive.

Such set pieces are normally reserved for announcements of the greatest magnitude. Was it a general election? Some other major initiative?

In the end, what we got was a short speech that was heavy on the rhetoric, but light on the action.

The PM was in blistering form, as he described a "shocking increase" in extremism in recent months.

He called George Galloway's victory in the Rochdale by-election "beyond alarming".

It was an impassioned defence of British values.

He called the UK "the world's most successful multi-ethnic, multi-faith democracy", but in the same breath, warned that it was under threat.

But if that was the diagnosis, well what was the plan? What was the grand strategy to tackle the problem?

Stood at the lectern in the gathering gloom, the PM announced a new "robust framework" for tackling extremism, to be announced later this month.

It was light on detail, but seemed to involve, amongst other things, more support for the existing extremism programme Prevent, and requiring universities crack down on extremism.

As a prescription for what Mr Sunak rightly identified as a major problem for British democracy, it felt almost as damp as the Friday evening weather.

Deputy political editor Sam Coates  has just got George Galloway's first reaction to remarks the prime minister made about his re-election to parliament.

In a Downing Street address, Rishi Sunak said the by-election result in Rochdale was "beyond alarming" (see post at 17.47).

He said it had returned a candidate who "dismisses the horror of what happen on 7 October", when Israel was attacked by Hamas, and who "glorifies Hezbollah".

Mr Galloway responds: "I've got the democratic mandate here, not Rishi Sunak... so don't put to me statements made by Rishi Sunak as if I'm meant to be impressed by them.

"He don't impress me much."

Asked about Mr Sunak's comments on his views on the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group, Mr Galloway says: "I don't know what that means ... I opposed Israel's occupation of Lebanon."

Sam then asks whether Mr Galloway respects the prime minister.

"Do I respect the prime minister? I despise the prime minister," Mr Galloway says.

"And guess what, millions and millions and millions of people in this country despise the prime minister."

"You have to just suck it up. I won the election," he adds, before walking away as his supporters shout goodbye.

You can watch the full exchange here:

In a call for unity, the prime minister says: "We must be prepared to stand up for our shared values in all circumstances, no matter how difficult" in the face of divisions.

Turning to the pro-Palestinian protests which have been taking place since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, he says: "Yes, you can march and protest with passion. You can demand the protection of civilian life. But no, you cannot call for violent jihad".

He says he has met with senior police officers this week to make clear the public expect them to "not merely manage these protests, but police them".

"I say this to the police - we will back you when you take action".

Speaking directly to those protesting, he says: "Don't let the extremists hijack your marches".

"Let us prove these extremists wrong and show them that even when we disagree we will never be disunited from our common values of decently and respect.

"The time has now come for us all to stand together to combat the forces of division and beat this poison.

"We must face down the extremists who would tear us apart.

"If we do that, we can build on our great achievement in creating today's Britain, a country of kind decent, tolerant people."

He concludes his statement by saying: "We can make this a country in which we all feel a renewed sense of pride. This is our home.

"So let us go forward together, confident in our values and confident in our future."

The prime minister has said Islamist extremists and far-right groups "are spreading a poison - that poison is extremism".

"It aims to drain us of our confidence in ourselves as a people and in our shared future," he says.

"In short, they want to destroy our confidence and hope.

"We must not allow that to happen."

He adds: "No country is perfect, but I am enormously proud of the good that our country has done".

"I stand here as our country's first non-white prime minister, leading the most diverse government in our country's history, to tell people of all races, all faiths and all backgrounds it is not the colour of your skin, the god you believe in or where you were born that will determine your success. But just your own hard work and endeavour."

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
