South africa safari tours and holidays.

South Africa holidays are great for all ages due to the diverse range of activities, landscapes, cultures and wildlife. In South Africa, the sky-piercing peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains blend seamlessly with the verdant plains of the Highveld. In the north-western fringes of the country loom the vast expanses of the Kalahari Desert. The difference between landscapes is extreme, but it’s only the start of the diversity of this great nation.

South Africa also boasts an expansive coastline, continuing unbroken for nearly 3,000 kilometres between Namibia and Mozambique, reaching across two oceans - the Atlantic and the Indian. It's little surprise then, that with such a variety of landscapes, South Africa is home to a broad array of wildlife, some of which cannot be seen anywhere else on Earth. On a South African safari with Bench Africa, you can experience South Africa from a unique angle - read on to find out more!

Why should I book a South Africa holiday?

Even though South Africa is largely perceived as the most modern of the African nations, that doesn't mean its lush savannah is in danger of being buried under concrete any time soon, or that your wildlife photos will feature an unwelcome background of stark, grey buildings. Far from it - South Africa is indeed an advanced nation, but drive a few kilometres out of any town or city and you'll find yourself right in the heart of the Rainbow Nation's countryside. This is where you can experience a true South Africa safari.

Take Kruger National Park , for example. It's one of the oldest game reserves on the continent, and is positively enormous, covering over 19,000 beautiful square kilometres. As if that isn't enough to spark your wanderlust, consider this - there are almost 150 types of mammals, more than 500 kinds of birds, and no ...

Take Kruger National Park , for example. It's one of the oldest game reserves on the continent, and is positively enormous, covering over 19,000 beautiful square kilometres. As if that isn't enough to spark your wanderlust, consider this - there are almost 150 types of mammals, more than 500 kinds of birds, and no less than 114 species of reptiles. That's without even mentioning the 34 different kinds of amphibian and 49 types of fish that call Kruger their home - and that’s only one of South Africa’s safari parks!

Top South Africa activities

Of course, South Africa is a nation that's simply overflowing with potential for wildlife adventures. However, there is so much more to this South Africa than just safari - take a look at these for size, but remember, these are just two activities to experience. There are countless more South Africa adventures that the experienced team at Bench can work into a customised South Africa tour for you.

Take a wander up Table Mountain

No South Africa tour is complete without a trip to Cape Town to see Table Mountain! The aptly named Table Mountain features a summit that's completely flat, and is known as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. No matter whether you are at the top or bottom of Table Mountain, you'll experience extraordinary scenery from either point. At the bottom, stand in vibrant Cape Town to get a photograph with an unrivalled backdrop, and from the top, take in the panoramic view of the city and harbour.

Take the Grand Tour

One of our most popular tours is our Luxury Signature Safari. Last year, in celebration of Bench Africa's 50th anniversary (that's half a century!) we launched our South Africa Signature Safari Special - to save you on your luxury South Africa holiday with Bench Africa. Our experts have carefully hand-crafted this Signature South Africa itinerary. The circuit suits the discerning traveller, visiting some of the most scenic and idyllic places in South Africa. You will stay in luxury boutique properties throughout - ensuring you experience the highest level of comfort and service.

Another very popular South Africa safari is our Makutsi Classic Safari . This 7-day safari is perfect for a range of travellers looking for an affordable safari in South Africa. Makutsi lies between the Drakensberg Mountains and Kruger National Park and includes a range of excursions, including game drives on a private concession, a day trip to Blyde River Canyon and a safari in Kruger National Park.

Five fascinating South African facts

  • The South African coastline is the final resting place of countless shipwrecks, some dating back centuries. Many of them can be explored on a dive, and if you’re really brave, some of the best shark-diving opportunities in the world await at Dyer Island.
  • One of the world’s highest bridge bungee jumps is found in South Africa. At a vertigo-inducing 216 metres, the Bloukrans River Bridge jump is not for the faint of heart!
  • Amazingly, South Africa has 11 official languages - it isn't called the Rainbow Nation for nothing! However, English is spoken throughout, so there will be few language barriers on your South African adventure.
  • The Cape Floral Kingdom – part of Table Mountain National Park – is one of just six floral kingdoms on Earth. It boasts an incredible 8,200 species of plants - that’s more than entirety of the whole United Kingdom!
  • 41 of South Africa’s beaches have been awarded the “Blue Flag” status, which means they adhere to strict environmental and safety standards.

Best time to visit australia.

Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit.

Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.

Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas.

Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.

The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

From large malls and boutique shopping strips to weekend arts and crafts markets and vintage shops, Australia is a top place to shop. Shopping in Australia may not be cheap, but there are plenty of unique finds and original souvenirs to bring home. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. New Zealand, for example, has strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Australia

Geography and environment

The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. While large areas of Australia are covered in desert, there are also tropical rainforests, alpine snowfields, dense bushland, beaches, gorges, lakes, and rivers to be found.

Australia’s national parks are home to many species of birds and mammals not found in the wild anywhere else in the world, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies and wombats.

Boasting many stunning white sand beaches, Australia has a coastline like none other. From busy Bondi to surfing icons like Bell’s Beach and Tasmania’s stunning Wineglass Bay , there are endless places to swim, surf, snorkel and paddle.

Despite Australia’s large landmass, most people tend to live in urban, coastal cities. Faster-paced cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne hold much of the population, as do regional satellite cities such as Albury, Dubbo, Bunbury, Townsville, Newcastle and Geelong.

Outback towns have a unique flavour and a distinct way of life; things are slower here and due to smaller populations, space is plentiful, with most locals relying on agriculture for a living. Venturing away from the city to visit the Outback and rural areas of Australia is highly recommended as it gives travellers the chance to see a different side of Australia. Traverse the northern regions of Australia's iconic outback landscape on a 11 day Darwin to Broome Outback tour.

Culture and customs

With a strong history of immigration, modern Australia is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This mix makes Australia an endlessly fascinating place to visit as travellers will be exposed to a variety of different customs and cultures during their stay. From the ancient, spiritual ways of the First Nations population to the wide array of faiths, foods and festivals on display in the big cities, Australia is a cultural melting pot.

Despite the differences, there are many things that unify the people of Australia. Sports, in particular cricket, soccer and football (Australian Rules), are played and watched by the masses, irrespective of age, race, gender or income. Large sporting events like the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day and the Boxing Day Cricket Test have universal appeal for Australians.

Australians relish public holidays, with national and state holidays offering locals time to relax with friends and family over a barbecue or picnic. Making use of Australia’s natural environment is also paramount during this time, with outdoor activities like bushwalking, swimming at the beach or lazing in the park popular with locals.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Australia is a land that has been built by immigrants, and these multicultural influences are evident in the wide array of food available. In the cities, it’s possible to find world-class Vietnamese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Indian restaurants, as well as excellent gastro-pub fare. Head to the Outback, and you’ll find authentic ' bush tucker ', simple campfire meals and sizzling barbecues.

Food to try in Australia

1. Fresh seafood

With such an impressive coastline, it’s no wonder fresh oysters, prawns, mussels and ‘balmain bugs’ are devoured by locals and savoured by visitors. For those on a budget, there’s nothing wrong with eating fish and chips on the beach.

Australia creates some of the best wines in the world at South Australia’s Barossa Valley , Western Australia’s Margaret River and New South Wales’s Hunter Valley .

Whether you’re downing a can of VB in Victoria or sipping micro-brewed ale in Sydney, sharing a beer with mates is a social experience not to be missed when in Australia

4. Hot pies

An Australian classic – savoury meat pies (or vegetable pies for vegetarians) are best eaten with tomato sauce and are easily found served in city cafes, country bakeries and football matches around Australia.

What's the weather like in Australia?

The weather in Australia varies depending on where in the country you are. For example, winter in Victoria and Tasmania tends to be very cold (around the 10 °C -15 ° C mark), whereas, if you head further north to the Northern Territory and Queensland, temperatures in the winter months are much nicer (usually around 18 ° C-25 ° C).

This pattern also applies to summer, where the southern states tend to experience lower temperatures (but still warm), while the northern and western states are warmer, with temperatures reaching as high as 40 ° C+.

Is tipping customary in Australia?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Australia; however, rounding up the bill or leaving spare change is common practice. Restaurant staff, taxi drivers and other service workers welcome tips for good service.

What is the internet access like in Australia?

Internet access is widely available in most parts of Australia, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots commonly found in urban areas. Please note that internet access won’t be available in Outback and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Australia?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in most parts of Australia, especially in large cities and urban areas. Remote, rural and mountainous places may have limited to no coverage, so be aware of this before venturing away from the city. Ensure global roaming is activated before leaving your home country if you want to use your mobile, or you can purchase a sim card when you arrive. The provider that will have coverage in the majority of Australia is Telstra, secondly Optus and then Vodafone. A hot tip – when you are in remote areas and don’t have mobile phone signal, turn your phone to flight mode which will conserve battery and prevent your phone from using data trying to search for internet signal.

What are the toilets like in Australia?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Australia, and many of our campsites have proper facilities with flushing toilets. In remote areas such as the Kimberley, there is no established plumbing and therefore we have installed ‘drop toilets’. Some campsites we use are managed by the National Parks and have either eco-toilets or drop toilets, most of which are maintained regularly.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Australia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by shops, restaurants and cafes in Australia. Smaller establishments may only accept cash or require a minimum purchase for credit card use, so be sure to carry enough cash for smaller purchases.

What is ATM access like in Australia?

ATMs are commonly found in large cities and regional towns in Australia. ATM access will be very limited in remote areas so be aware of this before heading into national parks or the Outback.

Who are the First Nations people of Australia?

There are two distinct groups of First Nations peoples in Australia - Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people - both of which have lived on this land for centuries. While there are only two Indigenous groups, there's actually a wide range of language and location communities that are made up of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people including the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Ranges (Aboriginal Australians) and the Badu people from the Near Western Group (Torres Strait Islander people).

Is Australia LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Australia is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers thanks to its anti-discrimination laws, diverse population and welcoming culture. There are many LGBTQIA+ friendly neighbourhoods and establishments across the country, as well as a wide variety of Pride events.

What's the transport like in Australia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself travelling overland.

Overland tours

Australia is a big place – like, huge.   Overland tours   involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.

What's the accommodation like in Australia?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in Australia you may find yourself staying in a:

Our lodge accommodation is located outside major cities, such as near the entrance to a National Park, and has its own amenities such as a restaurant or dining room. Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring the natural beauty of Australia.

Permanent Tented Campsite

There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a Permanent Tented Campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or stretcher (camp) beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Sometimes you'll be sharing a tent with others in your group.

Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some offer swag camping under cover or under the twinkling stars. You could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities or you might not have access to a shower at all. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so. Sometimes a trip has participatory camping where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to look after things like cooking.

We provide accommodation at a wide variety of hotels around Australia. Some are quite upmarket, others less so, but all of them offer a comfortable stay and ensuite facilities.

We use hostels on some trips which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms come with their own facilities while others have share facilities.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

South Africa Safari - Compare 827 Tours

South Africa is one of the world’s most varied holiday destinations. From the classic safari country of Kruger National Park to the stately ‘mother city’ of Cape Town; from the snow-sprinkled heights of the Drakensberg to the parched red dunescapes of the Kalahari; from the gorgeous Winelands around Stellenbosch to the idyllic beaches of the Garden Route – South Africa is a true all-rounder that attracts more than its fair share of repeat visitors. It is also the most affordable and well equipped of African safari destinations, particularly well suited to family holidays, to those seeking a malaria-free holiday, to dedicated foodies and wine-lovers, and for combining a foray into Big Five country with a beach holiday and/or city break.

8 Questions About South Africa Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

south african tours of australia

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

“There is no bad time to take a South African holiday. But certain parts of the country are far better at specific times of the year. If a safari will be the main event of your South African tour, most of the country’s key parks and reserves are at their best in the southern hemisphere winter months of May to September, when daytime temperatures are cooler, the bush is less dense allowing for better visibility, and wildlife tends to gather around limited water sources. For beach-lovers, by contrast, the main coastal resorts are at their best in the southern hemisphere summer (November to March). Special interest groups such as bird-watchers and photographers may also prefer to undertake a safari in summer, when resident bird populations are boosted by large numbers of migrant birds, and the clear sky and greener countryside make for a more photogenic backdrop.”

Why visit South Africa, what are the major attractions?

“Variety is the keynote of South African holidays. The country boasts one of the continent’s finest safari destinations in the form of Kruger National Park and nearby private reserves, while other key Big Five safari reserves include Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and malaria-free Madikwe and Pilanesberg. Safaris aside, South Africa is renowned for its fantastic beaches, limitless hiking opportunities, wonderful outdoor climate and good-value dining and wining scene. The main focus of non-safari sightseeing is Cape Town, which is gracefully perched below Table Mountain on a scenic stretch of Atlantic coastline, close to the whale-watching hub of Hermanus and the historical Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.”

How much does a South African safari cost?

“South African safari prices will depend greatly on the level of comfort you expect. At one extreme, self-drive camping safaris in somewhere like Kruger might work out at under US$100 for a couple per day. At the other extreme, all-inclusive safari packages at one of the country’s more exclusive private safari lodges might be 10 or 20 times more expensive. A good compromise between comfort and cost is a safari using the well-run rest camps that can be found throughout Kruger and in many other key national parks and provincial reserves. Accommodation aside, extras such as food, wine and other drinks are very cheap by international standards.”

How is the wildlife viewing?

“Excellent. Kruger National Park and neighboring private reserves host large populations of all the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), and rank among the top African safari destinations when it comes to spotting white rhino, as well as the rarer black rhino, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog. All these safari favorites are also likely to be encountered in Madikwe and Pilanesberg Game Reserves, as well as in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and the various small private reserves of the Eastern Cape. Outside of the major Big Five reserves, many parts of the country are still home to a variety of antelope, monkeys and small predators, all of which might be encountered by hikers and ramblers. Bird watching is consistently excellent throughout the country, while locally conspicuous marine wildlife includes penguins, whales and giant turtles.”

How safe is South Africa for tourists?

“Crime is a genuine issue in the larger cities, especially Johannesburg, but not so much in the game reserves, smaller towns and beach resorts that form the focal points of most South African safari trips. Follow local advice about safety, avoid walking around cities at night, and you should be fine. Malaria is absent from most parts of the country, the one major exception being Kruger National Park and its immediate environs, but even here the risk is far lower than in most other African safari destinations. Madikwe and Pilanesberg are Africa’s premier malaria-free safari destinations. Many reserves in South Africa offer guided walking safaris in areas inhabited by potentially dangerous animals such as elephant, black rhino and lion, but the risk of an incident is minimal provided that you listen to your guide at all times, and treat wildlife with respect. Possibly the biggest risk to life and limb in South Africa is a car accident, so self-drivers should adopt a more defensive and cautious approach than they might at home.”

How do I select a reliable tour operator for a South Africa trip?

“It’s worth doing a bit of research into operators before you book a South Africa tour. Look for reviews of any given operator on SafariBookings.com and possibly other online portals; the more reviews an operator has received, the more confident you can be of its reliability. If you have friends who have visited the country, or who live there, ask for word-of-mouth recommendations before booking any South African safari packages. Check out the company’s website too – as a rule its level of professionalism will reflect that of the company it represents. Once in South Africa, hotels and guesthouses can usually point you to tried-and-tested operators for day outings and other short local tours.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“South African safari accommodation ranges from no-frills campsites to exclusive upmarket lodges offering the last word in safari chic. In between these extremes, most national parks and provincial reserves have at least one well-run rest camp offering camping facilities and self-catering chalets (usually en suite but occasionally using shared bathrooms). For those who don’t want to immerse themselves in the bush, a selection of mid-range hotels can be found within easy driving distance of many national park and reserve entrance gates. Exclusive lodges are generally associated with private reserves and concessions that offer all-inclusive safari packages incorporating guided game drives and walks.”

What can I expect from South African safaris?

“Generally South Africa has a more developed feel than other African safari destinations. Most national parks and other reserves can be reached via good, surfaced roads, which certainly isn’t the case in many other parts of Africa. Some, such as Kruger, actually have an internal network of surfaced roads, and it is the only major African safari destination where a 4WD would be a luxury rather than a necessity, and the most suitable one for self-drive safaris. Likewise, most national park rest camps are well equipped for self-caterers, and many have well-stocked grocery shops. Further, the wildlife in South Africa is as wild as it is in most parts of Africa, the standard of guiding is unusually high, and people on organized safaris can expect excellent close-up sightings of everything from the Big Five to smaller animals such as birds and lizards.”

South Africa Tours

South Africa definitely lives up to its moniker – a “World in one Country”.

Its incredible diversity and beauty will delight you, from the scenic wonders including the Garden Route and Table Mountain, to cultural experiences that range from the Zulu people to Shangaan further north and everything in between. Our top picks include experiencing a luxury safari lodge in the Sabi Sands or Kruger National Park, several days to explore Cape Town and the stunning Winelands, topped off by a leisurely journey along the Garden Route.

Kruger National Park Home to Africa’s iconic Big 5 safari species – elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and zebra. The diversity and sheer number of different animals is unparalleled and best explored in one of the many private game reserves.

Cape Town & the Winelands One of the most beautiful cities in the world Cape Town has a combination of stunning  coastal scenery and urban sophistication. It is also the gateway to the historical Cape Winelands, famous for its world-renowned wines and European influences including beautiful Cape Dutch architecture.

Madikwe National Park This malaria free reserve is located northwest of Johannesburg along the Botswana border and boasts more than 60 mammal species including the big five. Spend your days enjoying game drives in open 4×4 vehicles, on specialised walking trails with qualified guides or birding safaris.

The Garden Route A beautiful 200km stretch of coastline in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Enjoy the incredible scenery including towns such as Knysna, a quaint coastal town surrounded by a beautiful lagoon.

Eastern Cape Home to the traditional Xhosa people and offers travellers the diversities of the stunning coastlines to the arid Karoo with its wildlife.

South Africa is definitely an ‘any time of year’ destination and their seasons are similar to New Zealand.

Our most highly recommended time is to go between May – Sep when it is actually the best game-viewing period – although a little chilly in mornings and evenings.

Staff experiences

Wildlife, scenery, food & wine, history, culture, top class hotels and game lodges, and luxury train travel. South Africa, the ‘Rainbow Nation’, is an amazingly diverse country.

The overnight journey on the Blue Train between Pretoria and Cape Town (or v.v.) is really a five-star “hotel-on-wheels”. The suites are air-conditioned with an ensuite bathroom, twin or double beds, a choice of digital entertainment channels and a personal safe. All meals and drinks are included with a focus is on formal fine dining. This was a nice way to ease into Africa with plenty of time to relax or socialise.

The Cape Winelands region is home to the picturesque towns of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, beautiful scenery, high class hotels and excellent restaurants. The highlight for me was dinner at the hotel’s Monneaux Restaurant. I remember my dinner of Duck Liver Burger with great fondness – mini brioche bun with pan fried duck liver, apricot curry glaze, red onion marmalade and crispy onion rings. Bon appetit indeed!

Cape Town’s highlights included Table Mountain, the colourful suburb of Bo-Kaap (formerly known as the Malay Quarter), and the sobering township of Langa, the location of much resistance to apartheid. A full day tour took in the scenic highlights of the Cape Peninsula including the secluded beaches of Clifton, the sidewalk cafés and bars of trendy Camp’s Bay, the breath-taking Chapman’s Peak Drive, the Cape of Good Hope, the Cape Point Funicular and the charming Boulders Beach penguin colony near Simon’s Town.

From Cape Town we flew to Kruger and transferred by road into the spectacular Sabi Sand Game Reserve located adjacent to the Kruger National Park, famed for its intimate wildlife encounters, particularly leopard viewing. Home to a host of wildlife, including the Big Five, Sabi Sand is part of a conservation area that covers over two million hectares.  With no boundary fences between the reserve and the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand benefits from the great diversity of wildlife found in one of the richest wilderness areas on the African continent.

As well as the Big 5 our Sabi Sand highlights included cheetah, observing hyena pups emerging from their den (a rare sight), the Sand River lion pride setting off to hunt as the sun set, a leopard devouring its kill in a tree, wild dogs setting off to hunt, and an early morning encounter with a female leopard drinking from a small water hole – the bush was so still you could hear her tongue lapping the water as she drank!

From Kruger we flew by light aircraft charter to Phinda Private Game Reserve known for its  fascinating variety of landscape and vegetation. Home to an abundance of wildlife, including many rarer and less easily spotted species such as the elusive cheetah and the scarce black rhino. With only a handful of lodges sharing an area of 23,000 hectares, and expert rangers and trackers in search of prime wildlife sightings, you are assured an exclusive game viewing experience. The marine diversity of nearby Sodwana Bay is easily accessible, with scuba diving, fishing and even turtle watching available.

For me, South Africa encapsulated all the best an African holiday has to offer with its mix of stunning natural beauty, wide range of accommodation options, award winning food and wine experiences, colourful and friendly people, and fantastic diversity of wildlife. Ube nohambo oluhle! Have a good journey!

Why we love it South Africa offers a veritable kaleidoscope of natural wonders, beautiful scenes, cosmospolitan cities and of course great wildlife viewing. The country has had its fair share of history and struggle, but as a traveller you can rest assured of being extremely well cared for – some of the finest hotels and unique safari lodges that we have seen are in South Africa.

Weather South Africa enjoys a temperate climate and therefore possible to visit any time of year. Summer months are from October to February and winter from May to July, though winters are very mild in the top half of the country and Indian Ocean beaches can be enjoyed in this region all year round.

Social customs & quirks South Africans, like the country itself, are a diverse range of backgrounds and have been slowly emerging as a truly combined nation. The mixture includes Afrikaaners (of Dutch descent), Cape coloureds, British, Indian and the ethnic black population such as Zulu, Shangaan, Sotho and others. All South Africans though speak proudly of their icons including Mandela, Desmond Tutu and even Charlize Theron.

Some of the best words to know before you go include: Braai (BBQ), just now (sometime soon, not actually now), biltong (dried meat snack) and bokkie (sweetheart).

Festivals & events South Africa has a huge number and variety of festivals and happenings year round including arts festivals in the Garden Route, floral expo’s in Namaqualand, world class concerts in Sun City and Cape Town, and of course the World Cup Soccer in 2010!

Travel to South Africa from Australia may require a visa – to check current requirements go to https://visalink.com.au/visa-quick-check

Health* There are no compulsory health requirements on entering South Africa, although if you are travelling from a Yellow Fever infected country you will be required to have a vaccination certificate. Malaria precautions are recommended for travelling into some of the national parks and reserves, particularly during October – May. There are some game reserves which are completely malaria-free such as Madikwe and Eastern Cape.

Notes *Please be aware that Health information is subject to change at any time and you should always double check these requirements at the time of booking and before travel.

The long and the short of it

South Africa offers a slew of lively cities, each one highlighting different aspects of a rich culture, history and landscape. Travellers have the option of selecting an extended South African tour that showcases the best of the country or shorter individual tours that focus on an individual aspect of the nation.

No matter where you decide to spend your time, city tours provide a great introduction. Cape Town , Johannesburg, Durban and Pretoria all feature interesting landmarks that deserve exploration. Guided walking tours are a great way to gain local insight. Or, for something a bit different, you may want to consider a helicopter tour.

Choose your own adventure

A variety of tours can be taken that encompass sea, city and everything in between. Tour via coach around the coast and enjoy the array of locally produced wines and fine dining in Stellenbosch region. Alternatively, treat yourself by boarding the Shongololo Express.

It would be remiss to visit South Africa without taking a safari tour. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is one of the largest reserves remaining in Africa. On the other hand, bring your binoculars to spot the ‘big five’ including the elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo on a guided safari of the Kruger National Park.

south african tours of australia

Welcome to Johannesburg! On arrival in South Africa’s vibrant metropolis, you’ll be met by a Luxury Escapes representative at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), who will greet you before your transfer by domestic flight to Hoedspruit (‘Hat Creek' in Afrikaans), the vibrant gateway to the world-famous Kruger National Park. Upon arriving in town, you’ll be met by a tour representative and transferred to your luxurious accommodation, Imbali Safari Lodge.

Set within the extraordinary Kruger National Park, Imbali is the perfect base to explore a region steeped in history, brimming with spectacular landscapes and an abundance of incredible wildlife. Set within the central point of over 10,000 hectares of wild concession, each of the lodge’s 12 private chalets offers exquisite views, private jacuzzis and everything you need for a truly magical African experience. Spend your first evening admiring the majestic South African sunset and savouring time spent in the midst of the true wilderness.

Roam wild and free as you explore the Mpumalanga region, backed by the expertise of Imbali Lodge. Admire how Kruger National Park’s spectacular granite kopjes (hills) pepper the south, the Lebombo Mountains rise from the savannah in the east, and tropical forests cover the north of the staggeringly huge park.

Spend days in paradise engaging with Imbali Lodge’s incredible safari program. The park offers some of the best game viewing and wildlife opportunities in the world, including Africa’s iconic safari species and the coveted ‘big five’ – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. It’s also the perfect chance to catch glimpses of giraffes, zebras and menacingly cute hippopotamuses, as well as an extraordinary amount of native birdlife, including southern yellow-billed hornbills, crested barbets and glossy starlings.

If you’re feeling brave, ask your guide about ‘Qugunyan’s Fortune,’ an almost mythical abandoned fortune of diamonds, gold and coins found originally found just after the Anglo-Boer war.

Enjoy evenings with good company, great food and hours spent under the star-swept skies.

After breakfast, depart for Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) and your international flight of approximately two hours to Victoria Falls Airport (VFA), Zimbabwe, and the gateway to one of the world’s most magnificent natural cascades. After touching down, you’ll be met and transferred across the border to your Zimbabwe accommodation – Pioneers Victoria Falls (approximate transfer time is 4.5 hours).

Set among lush gardens, this boutique, heritage-inspired hotel offers elegant lodging just minutes from the thunderous beauty of Victoria Falls. Spend pleasant evenings in the serene central area, dining in Pioneers Falls’ nostalgic dining room or sipping local craft beer in the stylish lobby bar.

Today, learn about Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls, on a guided tour on the Zimbabwean side of the falls. Learn why the falls are known as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ – by locals, and witness what happens when the waters of the Zambezi River plunge over the 1700-metre-wide and 100-metre-deep chasm, creating a shower of spray and deafening noise.

As you amble along scenic pathways of the surrounding rainforest – stopping at each spectacular vantage point along the way – learn about the geological formation of Victoria Falls, the fascinating ‘discovery’ by David Livingstone and the abundance of birdlife.

After an afternoon of leisure, savour the experience of a lifetime – a sunset cruise along the mighty Zambezi River. Board the Ra-Ikane – named after historic explorer David Livingstone’s local guide and handcrafted to resemble a turn-of-the-century riverboat – and sip on your favourite sundowner as you relax and enjoy the riverine vegetation and exciting wildlife, including unique birds, hippos and the occasional crocodile. It’s the perfect way to experience Victorian splendour in the heart of Africa as you enjoy a welcome cocktail, tea and cakes while being given the history of the river. In the drier months, wildlife such as elephants and many antelope species can be seen grazing on the riverbanks or swimming across to the smaller islands.

Please note: Your sunset cruise may be moved to another day, depending on weather and transfers.

After a hearty breakfast, journey by vehicle roughly 90-minutes to your accommodation – Cresta Mowana Safari Resort & Spa, a luxurious riverside retreat in the heart of the Botswana bush, on the edge of Chobe National Park — home to Africa’s largest elephant population, buffalo herds, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and a vast number of beautiful birds. Enjoy unparalleled panoramic views across the floodplains, the very best African hospitality and uniquely luxe lodge accommodation – the entirety of the hotel is under thatched roofing.

With countless gorgeous riverbank pathways and a wealth of amenities – including a bar, resident lounge, dining patio, golf course and safari boutique – Cresta Mowana Safari Resort & Spa is your gateway to splendour and safari. Enjoy a wide range of included safari activities, all the while being accompanied by the resort's impeccable service and expertise.

The options are almost limitless – spend your days exploring the stunning natural beauty of Chobe National Park. During morning and afternoon safari drives, learn of the rich ecosystems of the park, which lend themselves to an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna, as well as an array of stunning landscapes and spectacular wild animals.

During your included drives, watch for elephants feeding and washing, spot stampeding herds of buffalo, keep an eye out for hyenas hiding from majestic lions and encounter up to 16 types of antelope, including the rare, semi-aquatic puku, red lechwe and sitatunga. Depending on the season, you may also catch the second-largest migration of zebra in Africa.

Say goodbye to Africa’s untamed paradise as you depart for Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) and your onward journey.

Southern Africa: Small-Group Safari Tour with Five-Star Lodge Stays, Game Drives, Victoria Falls Cruise & Internal Flights route map

Your experience begins in Johannesburg, gateway to spectacular Kruger National Park.Embark on game drives led by expert local guides and trackers, who will share personal stories and help you spot elusive animals. Dubbed the ‘big five’ purely because they are the five most difficult animals in Africa to seek out on foot, there’s nothing more majestic than watching lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos in their natural habitat – it's an experience you will never forget.

You'll also visit Chobe National Park, home to Africa’s largest elephant population, with an estimated 120,000 of these beautiful animals calling the reserve home. Botswana has long been associated with the world’s greatest explorers, including David Livingstone, and you can follow in their footsteps with incredible wildlife experiences. Spend two full days in the Chobe area, taking morning and afternoon game drives. The rich ecosystems of the park lend themselves to an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna, as well as an array of stunning landscapes and, of course, spectacular wild animals, including lions, giraffes, hyenas and more.

Get up close to one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls, Victoria Falls, on a guided tour and learn why the falls are known as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ – by locals. Witness as the roaring waters of the Zambezi River plunge over the 1700-metre-wide and 100-metre-deep chasm, creating a shower of spray and deafening noise, and dividing the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia in a most dramatic fashion. Determined to be the largest naturally formed waterfall on planet Earth, in 1989, it officially became one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Begin your journey with three nights at the lavish Imbali Safari Lodge, set on the banks of the N’waswitsontso River in the Kruger National Park. It's view of the valleys and mountains, the enchanting sunrises and African sunsets and the variety of game species that graze nearby create a serene ambience that makes the lodges at Imbali a truly spectacular experience.

Let all-inclusive dining and free-flow drinks fuel your adventures as you embark on exhilarating game drives to spot elephants, lions, giraffes and leopards. By night, unwind in your private lodging surrounded by lush landscape. Rustic and sanded wooden decks open to an expansive backdrop of the national park while sandstone bathrooms welcome you with sunken bathtubs and romantic outdoor showers – it’s the perfect setting to reconnect with nature.

You'll also spend two nights in the shadow of wonder at Pioneers Victoria Falls – an oasis of timeless glamour – and two nights at the opulent Cresta Mowana Safari Resort and Spa, located on the banks of the mighty Chobe River. Bear witness to the magical wonders of untamed Africa, where herds of elephants, antelopes, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards and more roam freely against the backdrop of the spectacular floodplains.

Customer Reviews

We have returned from our Safari in Uganda and Kenya with nothing but great experiences and memories. The organisation and planning of all the details was flawless. From your first contact with me to the final details, everything was so easy and quickly done. During our trip, every detail, every transfer, every connection was Perfect! It was such a relief knowing that we never had to worry about the next day of travel. So again, “THANK YOU” !!

My first time to Africa and The Africa Safari Co did not disappoint! I explored Namibia and the staff on the ground there, the transport, accommodation & activities were all exceptional! If you are considering an African adventure most definitely use The Africa Safari Co!

south african tours of australia

We spent 3 weeks in Africa, and 2 of those were travelling with The Africxa Safari Co. We started with 3 days in South Africa. Picked up at the airport on time, taken to our accommodation. Spent the next two days being shown around with a wonderful guide. Off we went then to Botswana, for another 3 days. We stayed at Kasane at the Bakwena Lodge. OMG this place is AMAZING! We saw all of the big 5 other than rhinos, within the first two days! We then went to Victoria Falls and yet again we were blessed with great accommodation and I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend this company!

We have just returned from a wonderful safari in Kenya. The organisation of the tour by The Africa Safari Co. meant that nothing was left to chance and all we had to do was enjoy our holiday. Thankyou The Africa Safari Co.

south african tours of australia

I have travelled twice with The Africa Safari Co. The first in 2015 when we went to Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Trekking and again in 2017 to Tanzania & Kenya. With 25 years experience in Africa their product knowledge is amazing and the staff really know their stuff. When putting itineraries together they offer great suggestions to work within time and budget restrictions. The local ground operators have been fantastic, very friendly with a great knowledge of the game and areas we travelled. If you are looking for an amazing Africa experience don’t look any further than The Africa Safari Co.

I just wanted to let you know, George and Ana have returned from their honeymoon, and they said it was everything they hoped for and more!

They were so happy with everything, and I’d like to thank you and Susie for all your recommendations and expertise in putting this together.

Your documentation was also the best of any I’ve ever received.

So a big thank you and I look forward to putting my next Africa booking with you!

product quote

"I grew up in South Africa and have been in the tourism industry for thirty years. Uncovering Africa's beauty is my passion. We design our own itineraries and hand-pick safari lodges and experiences. It allows us to listen and react to traveler feedback and build the exact experience our travelers are looking for. A lot goes into planning a safari. We want travelers to be focused on the moment, not the logistics. We know that safety is a must, but so is comfort and the little things like a day room for late-departing flights and a perfectly timed sundowner. We plan it all out to the letter.”

Eye On The Reef - Marine Conservation Program on the Great Barrier Reef

This was an amazing trip. It's perfect if you are looking to get certified and if you are looking to support conservation efforts. I went as open water certified, looking to get my advanced open water so I had the first two days to hang out in Cairns while the open water people did their classroom training. The hostel we stayed at was really great, lots of people, decent cheap food for dinners. It's nice because you are traveling with the same people for all legs of the trip so you dont really have to worry about "strangers" in your room. Konrad was really great organizing everything and met with us prior to each leg. The live aboard was very well structured, knowledgeable staff and honestly really good food considering the limitations. The days afterward spent learning about marine conservation and doing your part helping with the efforts are definitely once in a lifetime. Russell is extremely knowledgeable and understanding in that you might not be on the marine biology path, but you want to help. I went on this trip as a single who wanted to go on a dive trip to check the box of diving the Great Barrier Reef but I definitely got a lot more out of it. The people that are involved in this trip from No Limit Adventures to Reef Teach to Eye on the Reef to the Turtle Hospital are all so passionate about their jobs and it made this trip truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Great Ocean Road and Rainforest Walk 1 DAY Tour

Great Ocean Road and Rainforest Walk 1 DAY

Daniel F. was a GREAT guide and narrator for a very WET Reverse Great Ocean Road trip we took in August. We saw everything from the stunning view of the Twelve Apostles to wild kangaroos hopping across the road to trees full of snoozing koala bears. Even a kookaburra on the rooftop of our bus as we stopped for a break. I would recommend this tour for anyone visiting the Melbourne area !

Australia safari reviews.

This tour brought together a n eclectic group of travellers for a lovely 3 day outback experience. The sights, and hikes were wonderful. The accommodations in tents were good. The meals were appropriate for the convenience and weather conditions.
Fantastic tour with a knowledgeable & super efficient guide. Great group. Beautiful scenery & wildlife. Beaches & mountains spectacular. Beautiful sunrise & sunsets. Lovely food, plenty of variety & enough of it. Sleeping in the swag a novel experience & much more comfortable than I expected. Definitely recommend this company.
Myself and 8 friends crossed the Nullarbor with Chris as our guide, driver, cook and allrounder. He was very considerate of adjusting our schedule to the weather, which wasn't the best some days. He was always chirpy, friendly, informative and as a tour guide myself, I found him to be on top of his game. Long driving days on this trip, but never boring. The places we stopped were varied, saw plenty of wildlife, caught the end of the wildfowers at Fitzgerald River NP and managed a great walk at Cape Le Grande NP before the weather blew in. I highly recommend this trip. Very professional, good communication and a great way to cross the country.

Stop en route at a farmstall packed with locally produced products from the area.

Our journey continues to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The area has largely been untouched and unexplored with its rugged coastline being the graveyard for many a ship.

The historic Cape Agulhas Lighthouse is considered the icon that signifies the tip of Africa. After this thrilling experience, we continue via historic Swellendam and the Tradouw Pass to Barrydale and the famous Route 62. Sample top quality port style wines in Calitzdorp, before continuing to Oudtshoorn, the ‘ostrich feather capital’ and centre of the world’s Ostrich farming industry. Afterwards enjoy a wine tasting at a local wine estate in the scenic Schoemanshoek Valley. Return to Oudtshoorn for a fun filled interactive guided tour at a working Ostrich Farm then enjoy the rest of your day at leisure .

Day 4 Oudtshoorn Knysna

After breakfast, travel over the Outeniqua Pass to George, the sixth oldest town in South Africa and home to many historical landmarks including the Slave Tree and King Edward VII Library building, said to be the best example of Edwardian architecture in the town.

Our tour continues via Wilderness, an attractive holiday resort, to Knysna, known as the oyster box of South Africa, nestling on the banks of a beautiful lagoon in the heart of the Garden Route. Journey into the magical Knysna Forests, the stamping ground of the elusive Knysna elephants. Discover the stories of the woodcutters who worked the forests, the elephants that were hunted to extinction and the discovery of gold. While there, be sure to also visit the Dalene Matthee Big Tree Memorial. This enormous Yellowwood tree has been growing for over 880 years and was named after Matthee, the best known author of four books on the Knysna Forest. Enjoy a delicious lunch, in the forest, of traditional cuisine and local treats at Totties Farm Kitchen.

Day 5 Knysna

Today you’ll have the opportunity to further explore the natural beauty of the Knysna area. Visit the Forest Legends Museum, the colourful Old Suzie steam engine and the stately Old Forester’s House, home of forester David Ernest Hutchins, who was the first person to manage the indigenous forest in a sustainable manner.

Afterwards you’ll have the opportunity to visit Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, where you will be able to see a variety of primates, roaming free in the forest. This award-winning sanctuary is well known for its efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. Our visit here ensures that these already endangered species can survive and reproduce for a future reintroduction into the wild.

Our tour continues to the famous Eastern Head for spectacular views of the Knysna Heads (weather permitting). Afterwards we’ll travel to Brenton on Sea, a breath-taking holiday location and a nature lover’s paradise with its unspoilt beaches and peaceful surroundings. Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at your leisure to explore.

Day 6 Knysna Plettenberg Bay Tsitsikamma

Today we travel to Plettenberg Bay, considered the jewel of the Garden Route, for a visit to the Birds of Eden sanctuary, the biggest single free flight aviary in the world. Developed to create a safe environment for free-flight African bird, our visit here today goes towards protecting these species into the future.

We’ll then continue to Bloukrans Bridge, the highest single span arch bridge in the world. For the more adventurous, the Bloukrans Bridge is also home to the highest commercially operated bungy jump in the world!

Our day ends with a visit to Tsitsikamma National Park and, should weather be permitting, Storms River Mouth. The Tsitsikamma National Park encompasses 80km of rocky coastline and is filled with spectacular landscapes including Fynbos-covered mountains and deep river gorges leading down to the sea.

Day 7 Tsitsikamma Port Elizabeth Johannesburg

Head eastwards along the Tsitsikamma Forest to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), affectionately known as the “friendly city”. Travel to Chief Dawid Stuurman Airport for an onward flight to Johannesburg, where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is yours to relax.

Day 8 Johannesburg

Spend a full day exploring Soweto and its surrounds, where some of the watershed events in the struggle against apartheid occurred. The tour starts with a drive past the FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City and the venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final. It was also the site of Nelson Mandela’s first speech in Johannesburg after his release from prison in 1990.

We’ll continue through Diepkloof, home to Soweto’s richest and then to Kliptown, where the Freedom Charter was officially adopted in 1955. Drive past the Regina Mundi Church that played a pivotal role in the township’s history of resistance against apartheid and then onto Vilakazi Street, the most famous street in Soweto, where two Nobel Prize winners once lived; Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

The afternoon will conclude with visits to the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum that commemorate the role of the country’s students in the struggle against apartheid and the prestigious Apartheid Museum, that covers the full history of the Apartheid era in South Africa.

Day 9 Johannesburg

Today is yours to enjoy at leisure. Continue to explore the sights of Johannesburg independently or join one of the available optional tours.

Experience the birthplace of human life at the Cradle of Humankind, visit the Maropeng Museum and explore the Sterkfontein Caves, discovery site of Mrs Ples, the first complete Australopithecus skull.

Explore the highlights of Pretoria, including Paul Kruger House, Church Square, the Voortrekker Monument, Union Buildings and City Hall.

Day 10 Johannesburg Kruger National Park

This morning you will be collected from your hotel, heading east to the Mpumalanga region. After freshening up at your lodge enter the world-famous Kruger National Park and spend the afternoon game viewing in your closed touring vehicle.

Kruger National Park offers some of the best game viewing and wildlife opportunities in the world – and you’ll soon appreciate the challenges of managing this unique reserve. After an action-packed afternoon in the Kruger Park, enjoy authentic cuisine from the region at your hotel.

Day 11 Kruger National Park

The day begins with early morning coffee or tea, followed by a thrilling open vehicle game safari through the Kruger National Park with pre-packed breakfast. Your guide will endeavour to spoil you with sightings of the “Big Five”, general game and prolific bird life. After your game drive, return to the lodge and take some time to relax and enjoy the resort facilities.

This afternoon enjoy another thrilling game drive in your closed touring vehicle to pursue the Big Five and other rare and endangered species. Return to the lodge for another delicious dinner at your hotel.

Day 12 Kruger National Park Mpumalanga Kruger National Park

Enjoy breakfast before setting out to explore the magnificent Panorama Route, one of the most scenic routes in the region, offering glorious views, spectacular landscapes, and exquisite waterfalls. Visit majestic sights including God’s Window, the Three Rondavels and Blyde River Canyon – the third largest canyon of its kind in the world. We’ll also visit Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the charming village of Graskop, one of the first gold mining camps in the country.

For those who’d prefer to not join the Panorama Route tour, you’re welcome to take additional open vehicle game drives through Kruger National Park at your own expense.

This evening, return to your lodge for a delectable delectable dinner at your hotel.

Harrowing video shows elephant charging truck during African safari, killing American tourist

S hocking video captured the moment a 5-ton bull elephant in Zambia charged at a safari vehicle — flipping it over several times and killing an 80-year-old American woman during an expedition.

The unidentified woman was among six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a photography tour Saturday when they came under attack by the crazed beast, the Telegraph reported.

“At around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning the six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant,” Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement.

One international client killed by elephant in Kafue National Park from lufupa Lodge during Safari. Two injured and being evacuated to Lusaka. Full details being awaited from the operator through the Senior Warden Kafue Region. Very unfortunate indeed. pic.twitter.com/4ntbyhec1G

Distressing footage captured by a passenger shows the elephant barreling toward the vehicle as it cruises along a bush-lined road before suddenly stopping when its path was blocked.

The passenger continues to record as the animal lunges at the vehicle and flips it over.

The elderly woman later died of her injuries while another woman remains hospitalized.

The other four guests were treated for minor injuries after the violent attack.

“Our guides are all extremely well-trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Vincent said.

Kafue National Park’s management sent a helicopter to the scene to evacuate the victims.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident,” Vincent added.

The group was reportedly staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in the Kafue National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa.

African Parks, which manages the park, also controls 22 other wildlife sanctuaries in Africa.

The tour group was making arrangements to return the woman’s body to the US, the Nigerian Bulletin reported.
