10 things we'd have wanted to see in back to the future 4 if it'd ever happened.

While it’s probably for the best that Back to the Future 4 seems unlikely, there are some interesting questions that a sequel could have explored.

  • Back to the Future's legacy remains intact by quitting while it was ahead, unlike other 1980s classics with legacy sequels.
  • A sequel could have explored new time periods, parodied different genres, adapted the stage musical, or focused on Doc's sons.
  • A legacy sequel would have lost the 1980s charm of the original trilogy, but it could have been an interesting new era for the franchise.

Robert Zemeckis has stated that Back to the Future 4 will never happen, and while this is probably good news, there are some things which a sequel could have delivered. The Back to the Future trilogy came out between 1985 and 1990, and although there have been some calls for a sequel, many fans are content to leave it as it is. This makes Back to the Future a rare example of a franchise quitting while it was ahead, ensuring that it's legacy remains intact.

While Ghostbusters , Blade Runner , Top Gun and many more 1980s classics have received legacy sequels in recent years, Back to the Future is one franchise that seems untouchable. Legacy sequels and reboots have been hit-and-miss, so it may be for the best that Back to the Future remains in the past. Still, this means that all the untapped potential of a Back to the Future sequel will never be realized, and there are a few things that fans of Doc and Marty would have wanted to see.

11 Ways Back To The Future Was Almost Completely Different

10 another historic setting, back to the future has a lot of fun with its quirky period locations.

Back to the Future Part III uses its Western setting to parody Western movies. Using this same technique, Back to the Future 4 could try to parody other historical genres, like war movies or Roman epics.

Back to the Future contrasts the 1980s with the 1950s, and Part III goes even further by sending Doc and Marty to the Wild West in 1885. Any potential Back to the Future reboot or sequel could travel to a completely new time period. If the series stays in America, the characters could find themselves in the Prohibition era facing up to a Biff Tannen-esque Al Capone, or in the midst of the Revolutionary War.

Back to the Future Part III uses its Western setting to parody Western movies. Using this same technique, Back to the Future 4 could try to parody other historical genres, like war movies or Roman epics such as Gladiator and Ben-Hur. A lot of Back to the Future 's funniest moments come from the similarities and differences between different time periods, so more time travel would undoubtedly be a good thing.

9 A Musical Adaptation

A sequel could adapt the successful stage musical, rather than attempting a true remake.

There are many reasons why a Back to the Future remake shouldn't happen , but a musical adaptation could be one way of avoiding too many direct comparisons. Casting anyone else in the roles of Doc Brown and Marty McFly would be a recipe for disaster, and removing the 1980s charm would also alter the movie beyond recognition. However, this doesn't mean that a remake of the original is impossible.

A stage musical version of Back to the Future has received positive reviews in London and New York City , and there are plans for a North American tour. Back to the Future is just one of many movies which have become musicals , but it might be a good idea to go via the Mean Girls route and adapt the stage show back into a movie. This wouldn't please all fans of the original movie, but it would be a great way to reboot the story without directly copying it.

8 More On Jennifer's Story

Marty's girlfriend could have had a more active role.

Jennifer could have joined Marty and Doc, rather than staying behind like she does in Back to the Future Part III.

Marty McFly's love interest never gets as much attention as he or Doc do, and Back to the Future could have fixed this. Jennifer's main role in the movies is simply to be Marty's girlfriend. She gets a little more development in Part II when she wakes up in the future, but the fact that Back to the Future recast Jennifer twice just goes to show how her character isn't as important as any of the movie's other stars.

By the end of the Back to the Future trilogy, Jennifer has learned about Marty's time-traveling adventures with Doc, and she and Marty seem happy together. This means that her inclusion in any hypothetical Back to the Future 4 would be all but certain. She could have taken on a more active role as a character who shapes the plot for her own reasons. For example, she could have joined Marty and Doc, rather than staying behind like she does in Part III.

7 Tales From The Time Train

Comic books already provide the blueprint for a back to the future sequel.

Hardcore fans of Back to the Future will know that the story didn't end with Part III. Back to the Future screenwriter Bob Gale has continued the story in a series of comics made by IDW Publishing. One particularly interesting potential plot for Back to the Future 4 could have been taken from Tales From the Time Train, a series of six comics which follows Doc and the Brown family on an adventure through time.

Back to the Future Part III 's ending sends Marty and Doc in different directions. Marty stays in his own timeline with Jennifer while Doc flies off in the time-traveling train with his family. Tales From the Time Train shows the Brown family visiting the World's Fair in New York in 1939, but they are soon drawn into a dangerous plot featuring German spies. Tales from the Time Train has a Doctor Who feel, with Doc inadvertently becoming involved in a mysterious and deadly game of espionage.

6 Jules & Verne

Doc's children could be the ideal stars for a hypothetical legacy sequel.

Back to the Future 4 could have been like a road trip movie through time, with Jules and Verne taking the DeLorean for a joyride.

Whether or not Back to the Future should have taken inspiration from the comics, it definitely could have shifted focus toward Jules and Verne, Doc's two sons. They appear briefly at the end of Back to the Future Part III , but their future is left a mystery. Presumably, they travel off on several madcap adventures with their parents and their dog, Einstein. Back to the Future 4 could have seen what happened to them after they grew up.

Based on Doc's relationship with Marty, it's safe to assume that he would have been a loving father, but he probably would have thrust his two sons into some dangerous situations from time to time. It's unknown how this would have affected the boys growing up. Because there are two of them, Back to the Future 4 could have been like a road trip movie through time, with Jules and Verne taking the DeLorean for a joyride.

5 Marty's Life As A Father

Marty's life would have been different to the one that was shown in part ii.

Back to the Future Part II shows Marty as a father, but his life isn't as happy as he thought it would be. Fortunately, Marty turns down the street race that will cause most of his problems in Back to the Future Part III, so he avoids the troubled marriage and the unfulfilling career ahead of him. Part III ends with the hopeful message that Marty's future is still unwritten, and it can be anything he wants it to be.

This happy ending is an optimistic conclusion to the trilogy, but if Back to the Future 4 ever happened, then it would also be a great open-ended set-up for Marty and Jennifer to go on some more adventures. With their future uncertain, anything could happen to the two of them, and their children, if they still had them, likely wouldn't be very similar to the ones which appeared in Part II.

4 Robert Zemeckis As Director

Back to the future 4 should never happen without the original director's approval.

The only acceptable way for Back to the Future 4 to become a reality would be for Robert Zemeckis to change his mind about the project.

Robert Zemeckis won't allow a Back to the Future reboot to take place within his lifetime, and neither will his writing partner Bob Gale. Any attempt at continuing the franchise without either of both of these men would be met with disappointment from fans, and it would probably be little more than a hollow imitation of all the things which have made Back to the Future so popular for so many years.

The only acceptable way for Back to the Future 4 to become a reality would be for Robert Zemeckis to change his mind about the project. Perhaps if he came up with a new idea that was as exciting to him as the original trilogy, then he would want to revisit the story, but any reboot or sequel should be on his terms. Legacy sequels without the same team of creatives rarely if ever strike the correct tone.

3 A Look At The Different Timelines

Back to the future could provide the antidote to multiverse fatigue.

Doc explains in Back to the Future that altering the events of the past can send shockwaves through to the future, and that making different decisions sometimes creates alternate timelines which branch off from the reality that he and Marty experience. This suggests that Back to the Future could have a multiverse, although the franchise came out decades before multiverses would become the latest Hollywood trend.

With the MCU, the Spider-Verse movies, The Flash, The Lego Movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once and more contributing to the influx of multiverse movies, it's the perfect time for a fresh set of eyes to deconstruct the phenomenon. Back to the Future could take a playful approach to its multiple timelines in much the same way it toyed with the tropes and paradoxes of time travel sci-fi. It could be fun to see all the different versions Marty existing across the multiverse.

2 Doc Figuring Out Why 2015 Was So Different

Back to the future could explain why 2015 wasn't filled with hoverboards.

A modern-day sequel or reboot of Back to the Future would have to choose how to represent the 21st century.

Back to the Future Part II shows Marty in the distant future of 2015. Some of Back to the Future 's predictions have come true, like digital currency and video calls, but many more are still sci-fi fantasies, like automated dog walkers and flying cars. Back to the Future has a complex timeline , so it's possible that Marty's actions in Part III somehow stopped the future which is shown in Part II from ever happening.

A modern-day sequel or reboot of Back to the Future would have to choose how to represent the 21st century. The movie could either show 2024 in the same way that Part II shows 2015, with hoverboards and people wearing two ties, or it could show a more realistic modern age. If this were to happen, Doc would have to figure out what events caused the timeline to shift so dramatically.

1 Cameos From The Original Stars

Back to the future could have paid tribute to the originals, even if it came decades later.

Back to the Future 4 wouldn't feel the same without Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox , but if the franchise ever wanted to move forward, then it would have to formulate a plan to do so without them. However, this doesn't mean that they should be cut entirely. A hypothetical Back to the Future 4 could use the franchise's old characters just like Star Wars or Ghostbusters, with them in reduced roles, but still playing an important part.

Michael J. Fox has hinted at returning to acting , even though he previously announced his retirement in 2020. Fox has been living with Parkinson's disease since the 1990s, and he has spoken about how this has made acting much more difficult for him. This would limit the kind of role that he could have in Back to the Future 4, but fans would love to see him involved in whatever way is possible.

10 Best Places To Visit In Belize In 2024

B elize is a magnificent country tucked between Mexico and Guatemala, with a long stretch of coastline along the Caribbean Sea. We spent a week in Belize during our Central America backpacking trip and could’ve easily stayed much longer!

I was blown away by the kindness of the local people and their vibrant energy. Not to mention the stunning beaches and relaxed island lifestyles. I loved nature and wildlife and just how welcoming Belize felt.

Belize is not only a perfect destination to visit on its own and spend a week or two exploring but you could also easily combine it with a longer trip from Mexico to Guatemala for example, thanks to its relatively small size.

With so many incredible places to visit in Belize, this list will give you all of the best options to choose the perfect destinations for you.

Best Places To Visit In Belize

Belize may be a small country but there are so many great places in this beautiful country.

Here are the top 10 best places to visit in Belize.

1 – Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a small island with a very relaxed and laid-back vibe . In fact, it is more correct to describe it as 2 islands since it was hit by a hurricane in 1961 and torn in two. Naturally, the locals took this in their stride and this narrow channel of sea between the 2 islands is now named ‘The Split’.

The Split is a popular place to hang out and enjoy the beautiful clear waters. There is a great beach bar by the split called the Lazy Lizard, where I highly recommend spending an afternoon.

Caye Caulker is well known for being a backpacker hub , especially around the main town. You will find plenty of hostels and bars to meet fellow travelers. We loved the beachside coffee shack called Ice & Beans. They do great coffee and have hammocks on the beach so you can swing while you sip.

If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, on the other side of The Split you will find more resor t s and hotels that are geared more toward families visiting Belize with kids .

2 – Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is one of the best Caribbean islands for families . The largest of the Belizean islands, and one of the most popular places to visit in Belize, Ambergris Caye is around 25 miles long but no wider than 1 mile .

The main town is San Pedro, towards the south of the island. There are a lot of things to do in San Pedro , as it is a bustling hub with a much more authentic feel than Caye Caulker.

In this town, you will find more local people going about their day-to-day lives than you will tourists.

We stayed at the Sandbar Beachfront Hostel and this was one of the best hostels we found in Central America . Located right on the beach they have a private pier over the water, a great pool and the restaurant makes the best pizzas!

If you head further north along Ambergris Caye you will find many quiet and stunning beaches with breathtaking turquoise waters. From the shores of the island, you can even see the Barrier Reef that runs alongside Belize.

3 – San Ignacio

Found just a short drive from the Belize-Guatemala border is the town of San Ignacio. Located in far western Belize , it is often used as a stopover by travelers heading from one country to the other. But the town of San Ignacio actually has an awful lot to offer.

San Ignacio is a small town and can be explored on foot , you can take a stroll along the river or head to the big local market for some fresh fruit or homemade local delicacies.

San Ignacio has a lot to do , and is a great place to base yourself if you want to visit the ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave) or explore some of the other places mentioned on this list such as Caracol or Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

San Ignacio is also home to its very own Mayan Ruins site called Cahal Pech .

Cahal Pech is only $5 USD to enter and when we visited we had the entire site to ourselves for hours! You are even allowed to climb the Pyramids still at this site.

If you are heading from Belize to Guatemala, it is worth spending a couple of days in San Ignacio before moving on to Guatemala .

4 – Hopkins

Hopkins is a quiet and peaceful beach village located in the south of the country. It is steadily growing in popularity among travelers but this south Belize gem still maintains its authentic nature, food and culture . This is what visitors love most about Hopkins.

You can enjoy the quiet, pristine beaches in peace and get a real experience of the way of life in this area. One of the most special things to do while in Hopkins is experience the Garifuna drumming . An art that is only practiced in a handful of places still, so it is not to be missed.

The Garifuna people are of mixed Afro-Caribbean descent. They immigrated from the island of Saint Vincent to Belize, settling primarily in the coastal areas, like Hopkins, where Garifuna culture is a celebrated part of the visitor experience.

Hopkins is also the best place to stay if you want to explore the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Reserve . This is one of the only Jaguar reserves in the world.

You can join a tour to hike through the reserve , swimming in beautiful waterfalls as you keep your eyes peeled for a rare glimpse of a Jaguar.

5 – Belize City

If you are flying directly to Belize then you will be landing in Belize City as this is the only international airport in the country . It then makes sense that you may want to spend a day or two exploring the country’s capital city.

There is a surprising amount of colonial history and architecture to be found throughout the city and the best way to experience it all is on a guided tour of the city . This way you will have a local guide who can explain more about what you are seeing as well as advising on the safe areas to stick to around the city.

Some more great spots to have on your itinerary in Belize City are the government buildings, St John’s Cathedral and the Museum of Belize.

Spend a day exploring these sites before you head out to the Cayes and you will really be able to appreciate the contrast between city and island life.

6 – The Blue Hole

Perhaps one of the most iconic and well-known places to visit in Belize is the magnificent Blue Hole . This incredibly unique sinkhole is a natural wonder that is located around 43 miles off the coast of Belize.

It is possible to experience the Blue Hole by boat or from above in a helicopter or small plane. Boat trips are best from Ambergris Caye as this is closer to the hole and the journey will be 3-4 hours each way.

Flights also leave from the small airstrip in San Pedro each day to take tourists on an hour-long flight over the hole .

It is also known to be one of the most sought-after dive sites in the world , drawing experienced divers from far and wide to experience its mysterious depths.

7 – Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Belize is located right next to the second-largest barrier reef in the world . If you are an ocean lover then no trip to Belize should be complete without taking a diving or snorkeling trip out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve on the Belize Barrier Reef.

The reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising seven protected areas, including the Blue Hole, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and stretching as far south as the South Water Caye Marine Reserve and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve, located off the shores of Placencia.

We did a combination of snorkeling and diving and were blown away. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is home to hundreds of colorful fish, rays and sea turtles and the water visibility is great.

Shark Ray Alley is an incredible spot that is now home to hundreds of friendly nurse sharks and rays. You can jump right in and swim amongst them. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These waters are also home to Manatees .

We were lucky enough to see one and they are much larger than we expected.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve can be accessed by boat from either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker .

8 – Caracol Mayan Ruins

Belize is known for its impressive Mayan ruins. The ancient Mayan archeological site of Caracol is pretty special.

It’s no secret that there are hundreds of Maya sites in Belize , as well as sprinkled across Mexico and Guatemala. While there are a few more famous than Caracol, like Tikal in Guatemala and Chichén Itzá in Mexico, Caracol is seriously underrated.

This impressive site is buried deep within the Belize jungles, 2 hours from the nearest town and no public transport goes there. Making this one of the most off-the-beaten-path places to visit in Belize.

You will need to join a tour or rent a 4×4 to get there as there is an hour of driving off road before you reach the site.

Caracol was once one of the major Maya hubs, covering an area of 55 square miles. Now the main pyramids have been uncovered and tower over the jungle.

9 – Placencia

Placencia is the most southern beach destination on this list, located a little further south along the coast from Hopkins.

This sleepy fishing village is slowly becoming a favorite among travelers thanks to its small and charming main street, lack of traffic and incredible beaches.

Placencia is the name of the village that sits at the end of the 16 mile-long Placencia Peninsula. The narrow strip of land is only half a mile wide at its widest point making it very much feel like a remote caye.

Luckily for us, it has all the vibes of a gorgeous caye but we can drive there. It is still largely undeveloped and mostly inhabited by locals. You will find no high rises here.

Each morning the local fishermen still head out in their boats around the peninsula and during the summer months, this is an ideal spot to head out on a snorkeling tour find Whale sharks.

10 – Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a unique landscape in Belize. You won’t find the iconic pine trees in the other jungles across the country.

This entrance to the reserve is around a 45-minute drive from San Ignacio . It is possible to drive yourself however the roads inside the reserve can get treacherous after rainfall. The best way to visit the pine forest reserve is on a guided tour .

A tour can take you to multiple spots in a day so you make the most out of your time there. The reserve is home to beautiful towering waterfalls as well as smaller rock pools like Rio On Pools which are perfect for swimming.

It is also where you can find the impressive Rio Frio cave . An enormous cave that leads to a huge underground river system. It is well worth a trip to this wonderful nature spot if you enjoy time in the great outdoors.

Best Places To Visit In Belize FAQs

If you’re planning a trip to any of the best places to visit in Belize, you likely have some other questions about this Central American destination.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Belize.

What part of Belize is best to stay in?

If you are looking for beautiful beaches and to meet lots of fellow travelers then you should stay on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. The water around the cayes is shallow and calm, which is ideal if visiting on a Belize family vacation .

If you want beaches but peace and quiet then you should stay along the beaches in the south of the country. If you are looking to experience the jungles and Mayan ruins then you should stay in San Ignacio.

The jungles around San Ignacio are also home to some beautiful eco-lodges that are great for a peaceful escape.

How long do you need in Belize?

I would recommend spending no less than one week in Belize to get the most out of your time there.

Ten days or more would be the ideal amount of time if you want to experience the islands and the coastal area along the mainland, as well as see the Mayan ruins and the jungles in western Belize.

If you have less than a week then I recommend spending your time on the Cayes and not moving around too much.

When is the best time of year to visit Belize?

The best time to visit Belize is during the dry season from January to May. This is when you will have the best temperatures and the least rainfall.

From August to December there is a low risk of hurricanes so always check before you travel.

Is Belize safe to visit?

Belize is generally known to be a safe country for tourists to visit. Belize City has a bit of a reputation for being unsafe in certain areas but crime is rarely directed towards tourists. If in doubt there are plenty of great group tours you can join to explore the city with a local who knows the area.

Regardless of where you visit, it is always best to leave your valuables at home and not wander around alone at night time.

Is Belize cheap or expensive?

Belize is not typically a budget travel destination. It is possible to find cheaper hostel beds, take public buses and eat street food. However, there are far more luxury resorts and activities in Belize which are usually pretty expensive.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

These are the 10 best places in the U.S. to raise a family—California didn't make the top 10

thumbnail

If you're looking for the best place in the U.S. to raise your family, consider moving to Illinois or Pennsylvania.

Both states contain several towns that ranked highly on a recent report from Niche assessing the nation's top family-friendly locales. The two states combined were home to seven of the top 10 places to raise a family in America.

To rank each location in terms of how much it would appeal to a family, the platform used data from the U.S. Census, Department of Education and FBI. It assessed factors including the quality of public schools in the area, cost of living, family amenities such as parks, libraries and cultural activities as well as walkability.

Other factors taken into account include:

  • Crime rates
  • Ethnic, generational and economic diversity
  • Percentage of households with children
  • Percentage of residents age 17 and under

Chesterbrook, Penn. took the top spot on Niche's list, thanks in part to the Philadelphia suburb's highly-rated public school system.

It has been one of Niche's best places to live in the U.S. for several years. Niche gave it almost all A's across the board in categories like housing, nightlife, diversity and family amenities.

The median listing home price in Chesterbrook was $355,000 in February 2024, trending down 4% year over year, according to Realtor.com . The median rent for an apartment in the suburb is $2,173, with the average size being around 950 sq. ft., according to RentCafe .

Long Grove, ranked as the No. 2 best place to raise a family, according to Niche.

The Chicago suburb scored A's in categories like public schools, housing, and being good for families. It got a B in nightlife and a B- in diversity.

"Living in Long Grove offers residents a rural feel, and most residents own their homes," the report reads.

The suburb is northwest of Chicago, about an hour from downtown, and known for its historic charm.

Long Grove has strict building ordinances to preserve its look, including rules about its sidewalks, fences and residential street lights.

The town's website says Long Grove is "designed with a philosophy of preserving nature."

Long Grove's average home value is $808,847, up 7.9% over the past year, according to Zillow .

Travel | travel: how to go on a high-class golf vacation without landing in the financial rough.

ratnagiri top 10 places to visit

One of the beauties about golf, besides the azalea-flanked 13th hole at Augusta National Golf Club, home of this week’s Masters, is that unlike most professional sports, you and I can actually  play where the pros play.

Is surf-hugging Pebble Beach Golf Links too beautiful to only watch on TV every February? Then go online and get a tee time for a gorgeous California course that has made U.S. Open champions of such greats as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods, and has hosted an iconic pro-am annually since 1947. Feel like playing 18 in the Hill Country home of the Texas State Open? The Ram Rock course, considered the most difficult among the four at renowned Horseshoe Bay Golf Resort outside of Austin, welcomes all from hacker to scratcher. Same with Hawaii’s paradisal Plantation Course at Kapalua, which hosts the wintertime Sentry Tournament of Champions, and The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, home of one of the most esteemed stops on the PGA tour.

Unfortunately, for us golf lovers not among the top 1%, water hazards and sand traps aren’t our only obstacles. It takes a lot of green to play the greens. A round at Sawgrass, for example, can set one back a grand at peak tee times, making Pebble Beach sound like a bargain at $675. Another reality is not every prestigious or pro-played golf course puts out the welcome mat for us commoners. Teeing off at Augusta National, for one, pretty much requires being besties with a club member or past Masters champion.

The good news is we club-swinging stalwarts have alternatives when hankering to play legendary links. The U.S. is dotted with them, but if we take our virtual golf cart to the warm-weather golfing meccas of California, Hawaii, Texas and Florida, our GPS system can locate less forbidding championship courses that are also vacation-worthy because they’re linked to topnotch resorts with accommodations, dining and activities to match.

Where are these swinging Shangri-las? This question is well-timed. Aware that golf fever is peaking with this week’s Masters and next month’s U.S. Women’s Open — we’re in the heart of the PGA, LPGA, PGA Champions and LIV tours, as if you didn’t know — we’ve scouted the four aforementioned states for resorts that are well above par even if your score isn’t under par. Quality doesn’t come cheap, but unlike some of the more hoity-toity clubs, this quartet of courses will welcome you with open arms, which, if you listen to Tiger, should be wide on the backswing to allow your muscles to stretch to their full potential.

Traveling west to east ….

Ko Olina Golf Club

Retired LPGA phenom Michelle Wie is honored with a statue at the entrance of Oahu's Ko Olina Golf Club. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Golf in Hawaii is nearly as kingly as Kamehameha, so playing a tropics-kissed course that’s drop-dead gorgeous isn’t hard to do in the Aloha State. What isn’t as easy as Sunday morning is finding a premier property with a cool, unpretentious vibe. That’s Ko Olina Golf Club on Oahu. Perennially ranked among the nation’s top resort courses, Ko Olina ( koolinagolf.com ) is a judgment-free zone with great taste in its partnerships with the Four Seasons Resort at Ko Olina, the choice property within the master-planned oceanfront community, and an on-site Roy’s Hawaiian fusion restaurant that might be the best in the chain.

The Ted Robinson-designed course is decked with stunning water features, multi-tiered greens and generous landing areas. Here is where retired LPGA phenom Michelle Wie developed her game, and there’s a statue of her out front to prove it. The pro shop is consistently ranked among the best in the U.S., and with the rental clubs being TaylorMade graphite, it’s tempting not to schlep your set. Inclusive of cart rental, a logoed tumbler and a basket of range balls, adult fees are no higher than $255, and go down to $190 after 1 p.m.

A short shuttle ride or stroll away is the 371-unit Four Seasons ( fourseasons.com ), which offers digs and dining befitting the five-star brand, and serves as a model for luxury Hawaiian resorts striving to appeal to everyone from young families to honeymooners to seniors. An impressive schedule of daily activities is augmented by R&R offerings that include the five-star Naupaka Spa, inviting lagoons and pools, and first-rate horseback riding in the scenic Waianae Mountains.

The Links at Spanish Bay

Having recently walked the storied course and hallowed halls of the 146-year-old Royal Troon Golf Club, which in July will host its 10th Open Championship, this unworthy duffer can now distinguish between a “Scottish-style links” course and the real deal. While the landscape between Pebble Beach and the south Ayrshire coast has little in common besides a shoreline, getting in a round at The Links at Spanish Bay does hint of playing Royal Troon’s Old Course.

Helping get in the Scottish spirit is a bagpiper who plays for about 45 minutes before sunset from the first tee to the second. Fee-wise, guests staying at The Inn at Spanish Bay pay $350, which includes a cart. It’s a stately and elegant hotel with 269 rooms, and has reciprocity with other Pebble Beach Resorts facilities ( pebblebeach.com ). Overlooking spectacular sand dunes with an endless view of the Pacific costs just north of $1,000 a night, but that’s less than the rates at the sister properties, The Lodge and Casa Palermo.

Snob factor aside, “better” and “best” don’t get much more than “good” — not when Spanish Bay’s lowest-price room still comes with a romantic fireplace, reading nook, choice of nine different types of pillows and other niceties.

Lost Pines Golf Club

Wild Texas bluebonnets and Nicholas Holditch's backswing make for great shots on the Lost Pines course where he is lead golf instructor. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The phrase “everything is bigger in Texas” certainly applies to the list of activities at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa ( lostpinesresortandspa.com ), a Hill Country jewel along the banks of the Lower Colorado River. On more than 400 glorious acres just outside Austin, you can fish, ride horses and ponies, pet goats, alpacas, pigs and donkeys, say “howdy” to morbidly named Texas Longhorns (Chuck, Sirloin, Brisket, T-Bone and Ribeye — really?), go on a wagon ride and hay ride, trap shoot, fire off BB guns, slingshots and arrows, throw tomahawks, swim, float on a 1,000-foot, palm tree-lined lazy river, play tennis and pickleball, and, oh yeah, golf.

Deep in the heart of Texas is a 7,200-yard course well-described by the club’s lead golf instructor as “undulating and isolated.” Green fees top at around $200. A recent multimillion-dollar makeover included a redesign of holes 10 through 13, rebuilt bunkers and a name change from Wolfdancer. Designed by golf architect Arthur Hills, Lost Pines is a par-72 beauty graced by rolling prairies, wooded ridgelines and groves of native pecan trees.

A day of golfing and horseback riding is par for the course at the Lost Pines Resort near Austin, Texas. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Apparently, those homegrown pecans aren’t good enough for the nuttiest dessert served at Maude’s, a bastion of Southern hospitality ironically named for the Texas-sized pecan tree that towers over the outside tables. But like nearly everything guests taste, touch and see at the 490-unit resort, the headline ingredient of the yummy bourbon pecan pie is still locally sourced. Deliciousness continues with the lamb sliders, artisanal charcuterie and flawless libations that include a killer carajillo. Take one sip of their version of this classic Spanish coffee-based cocktail and you may never order an espresso martini again.

Before we leave Lost Pines, hoping to return again, a shout-out to Sushi By Scratch for a new-wave spin on the Japanese dining experience of omakase, where it’s basically chef’s choice through 17 individually paced pieces of nigiri, A5 wagyu beef and other delicacies. Seatings are limited to 10 patrons, each paying a minimum of $165 for this event meal. Sushi By Scratch’s Lost Pines location is one of 10 in the U.S., four of which are in California.

The Boca Raton

The signature island-green 18th hole is a beautifully challenging way to finish a round at The Boca Raton in South Florida. (Photo by David Dickstein)

It’s hard to imagine a classier, cleaner and more comfortable resort than The Boca Raton ( thebocaraton.com ) in South Florida. This place is so exquisite after a history-respecting, $200-million reimagination, if it weren’t for the bill at the end it could qualify as heaven on Earth.

Dating back to 1926, The Boca Raton’s rich golf heritage includes Tommy Armour and Sam Sneed serving as its first two golf directors — 10 majors won between them. The resort’s Harborside Golf Course, exclusive to members and guests, is dedicated to these two legends. The par-71, 18-hole championship-level course features 12 acres of water, some put to use for a signature island-green finishing hole. From June to October, green fees are $210. That includes a golf cart and — get this — the food and beverage cart. We’re talking Asian shrimp salad, roasted turkey shawarma, rotisserie chicken salad and more delivered on the course by a pleasant attendant, and just for the asking. As we said, classy.

So is the adjacent high-tech driving range. Included in the resort fee are hitting stations powered by state-of-the-art Toptracer technology designed to perfect your swing. A monitor displays helpful data related to your golf ball’s speed, distance and spin rate. The digital gaming options are a blast.

A yacht-lined marina is the view from balconies of the adults-only suites at The Boca Raton in South Florida. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Taking off the cleats, also on the resort’s 365 acres are five hotels within a hotel that make up 835 total rooms. The adults-only Yacht Club claims 112 of those units, all chic suites with private balconies and views of Lake Boca Raton, the Atlantic and a yacht-lined marina. Amenities include a butler, exclusive dining and an invitation to explore the South Florida coast while behind the wheel of a $200,000 Aston Martin DBX. Which begs the question: Do we dream about buying that or membership into the Augusta National Golf Club?
