Do Citi cards have travel insurance?

Car rental insurance, costco anywhere visa® card by citi travel insurance benefits, citi® / aadvantage® executive world elite mastercard® travel insurance coverage, does citibank offer travel insurance.

Citi credit cards provide a host of benefits, including some generous points and miles earning opportunities (depending on the card you have).

But, when it comes to travel insurance, let’s just say it’s not necessarily Citi cards' strong suit.

Still, there are Citibank travel insurance benefits you should know about to ensure you use the right card when paying for your next trip. Here are the primary benefits associated with Citi card travel insurance.

Only two Citi cards have travel insurance, and each one has a different set of benefits: The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® .

Citibank Costco-Anywhere Visa Card Credit Card

on Citibank's application

Citibank Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® Credit Card

Both cards provide rental car insurance.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi also offers roadside assistance, worldwide travel accident insurance and a 24/7 concierge for travel and emergency assistance. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , on the other hand, offers baggage protection, trip cancellation/interruption insurance and trip delay protections.

If you use either of the two Citi credit cards listed above to pay for a car rental, Citi travel insurance will protect any damages to a rental car up to $50,000.

This amount will cover the cost of repairs or the cash value of the car, whichever is lower. It applies anywhere you rent a car — there are no geographic limitations — as long as the rental period is no longer than 31 days. Citibank travel insurance covers accidental damage, theft, vandalism or a natural disaster, and any necessary towing costs.

Citi's rental car insurance is secondary when renting a car within the U.S., but if you're renting outside of the country, it switches to primary coverage.

With secondary insurance, you need to rely on any other insurance coverage you have before Citi’s car rental insurance kicks in. Primary insurance, alternatively, will be the first line of coverage you have.

Coverage wouldn't apply if you rent the car to someone else or operate a rental car as a rideshare vehicle. It also only covers the car, not any personal injuries that might result from an accident.

There are several types of vehicles that are excluded from coverage. These include:

Trucks, pickup trucks, trailers, full-size vans on a truck chassis or recreational vehicles like campers and off-road vehicles.

Motorcycles or motorized bikes.

Commercial vehicles or cargo vans.

Any vehicle with fewer than four wheels.

Antique vehicles older than 20 years or that have not been made in the past decade.

Limousines.

Sport-utility trucks or open, flat-bed trucks.

Any vehicle that retails for over $50,000.

Roadside assistance

When driving in the U.S., roadside assistance is available for Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi cardholders by calling 866-918-4670.

Roadside assistance is valuable in the event of an accident, loss of fuel or other vehicle malfunction. Keep in mind that you would still have to pay for the assistance (like a tow truck, for example), but this benefit makes it easy to reach someone with one phone call.

Citi card provides access to similar assistance as a membership program like AAA . The difference is that AAA’s annual fee covers roadside assistance fees while Citi's coverage doesn't; it solely provides access to someone who can help you for a reduced rate.

Several credit cards provide some type of roadside assistance and are worth considering before paying the annual fee for AAA.

Worldwide travel accident insurance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi includes accident insurance, which covers the cardholder or family members if they are injured or killed when traveling on a common carrier (any vehicle that is licensed to carry passengers like a bus, plane, cruise ship or train).

You will need to have used the Citi card to cover the entire cost of the travel on that common carrier for the benefit to apply. The maximum coverage is $250,000.

Travel and emergency assistance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi card provides access to a 24/7 concierge to help you with a disruption to your trip. This can include medical assistance, referrals to a doctor or legal help. It can also help if you need to adjust travel plans.

Just remember, you’ll be responsible for paying for any services used, but the call is toll-free.

Baggage protection

Only available for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , this luggage protection provides coverage if your checked bag is stolen, lost or damaged.

The insurance covers as much as $3,000 per person ($2,000 for New York residents), but only kicks in if you use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

» Learn more: The guide to baggage insurance

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

If a covered traveler has a medical emergency or dies, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® coverage can provide reimbursement for up to $5,000 in eligible nonrefundable expenses.

You would need to use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

Trip delay protection

Another benefit that’s reserved only for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is trip delay protection . This coverage kicks in if your trip is delayed by at least six hours, and offers reimbursement for expenses incurred during the delay, up to $500 per trip.

This would include reasonable purchases like hotel stays, rental cars and meals.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Citibank travel insurance is available, but limited. It is only offered on two cards and isn't as comprehensive as other credit cards with travel insurance .

Both cards include rental car coverage, but beyond this, each has its own set of benefits. Depending on which one you hold, it may include coverage like trip delay protection or roadside assistance.

People hold Citi cards for many reasons, including the ability to earn transferable Citi ThankYou Points . But, the travel insurance benefits are somewhat limited. If you have a Citi card, review the travel insurance perks before you take off to understand your coverage.

In many high end hotels you’ll see a concierge desk right next to the check in counter. You may have even used one yourself while on vacation to get a map of the city, ask for restaurant recommendations, or secure tickets to a theater show. While most people have seen them and know that they exist, they don’t know that their credit card offers a similar service.

Credit card concierges have been around for decades and can provide a wealth of information and a wide breadth of services that you might not have ever known existed.

What is a credit card concierge?

Think of a credit card concierge as someone who you can call on whenever you need a helping hand or just someone to help take some of the weight off of your plate. If you’re swamped with things in your normal day-to-day life, having someone there that you can reach with a simple phone call can make all the difference in the world.

Some of the most common uses for a credit card concierge include:

  • Helping to lock down restaurant reservations
  • Flight and hotel bookings
  • Flower and gift delivery for special occasions
  • Tickets to sporting events
  • Museum and theater tickets
  • Securing hard to find concert tickets

While these all may seem like basic things that you could do yourself, the true power lies in the ability to take this off of your plate and free you up to do other things that take time and attention.

What credit cards come with a concierge service?

Not all cards come with a concierge and those that do typically come with high annual fees. Some of the most popular cards may be cards you’re already considering adding to your wallet.

Unique things your credit card concierge can do

If things like flowers and booking hotels are a little too mundane for your tastes, how about thinking outside the box. Afterall, you’ve signed up for these credit cards, so you might as well take advantage of all the perks that come with them, right?

Remember that while there are a lot of things that you can ask your concierge to do for you, there are some things that they cannot do. They won’t be able to make full flights magically become un-sold or hotels become available. They also won’t be able to have tickets for a concert appear out of thin air, nor will they be able to do anything to violate local or federal laws.

Also keep in mind that while the service of the concierge is typically free, the products, events, services or items that they help with will be charged to your credit card.

Help plan a road trip

If you’ve ever wondered what in the world is between point A and point B, or felt fear of loss because you might miss something along the way, consider asking your concierge for an assist. By telling them what kind of events or experience you want to see, they can curate a map for you, making sure to direct you to all of the hole-in-the-wall locations and unique roadside attractions there might be.

Plan an international trip

Traveling overseas can be overwhelming and complicated, especially if you don’t speak the language or have even the slightest idea of what to do. Your concierge can help take that stress off of your plate. They’ll typically start out by asking what types of activities you enjoy and go from there. Are you a foodie who wants a unique cooking class? Perhaps you’re more the mellow art gallery type. If walking tours are important, they can help set you up with an English language guided walking tour of your favorite European capitals.

Using a service like this is totally free of charge and can help you to save dozens of hours of tedious google searching and endless web searches.

Lost and found

Ever left something behind in a hotel room? Left your headphones onboard the aircraft? Your credit card concierge can contact the right people for you and make sure they look high and low for your lost item and then return it to you.

They’ll act as a point of contact for you and even help to expedite the lost item to you wherever you are in the world.

Finding unique and off the wall services

Need to find a store selling Danish antiques? Looking for the best pet spa in your area? Your credit card concierge can comb through listings for you and find the best-rated businesses in your area.

Only you know how much of a unique request you’ll have. If you’re a collector of 1930’s sports memorabilia, but you don’t want to spend an entire day bouncing around to every antique store in town while on vacation, ask your credit card concierge to give some calls to local stores and see if you can knock any of them off of your list.

Find hard to get products

During the pandemic, some of the most hard to find items were toilet paper, clorox wipes, and even at-home haircutting machines. If you’ve got an item that seems to be perpetually out of stock and you’re pulling your hair out trying to find it, your concierge can help.

Some common requests include certain styles or colors of clothing, workout materials, specialty international foods and more. If you can’t easily find it online, then ask your concierge for help.

If they find it, they’ll send you an email with the information of where to get it, or they might even purchase it for you, charging it to your card on file and sending it to wherever you are.

Set up unique experiences

Credit card concierges field dozens of calls a day, so they’ve got a long list of experiences that they’ve done in the past for clients, perhaps things you wouldn;t even have thought of.

If you want to propose while doing a hot air balloon ride over the Pyramids of Giza, they can help make that happen. If you want to do a tour of your favorite winery in the south of France, that can be arranged.

If you’ve always wanted to do a behind the scenes tour of your favorite English Premier League soccer stadium, why not call up the concierge and see if that’s something that can be set up. Don’t be afraid to have a little fun and ask for some enjoyable and unique ideas.

Airport escort services

If you’ve got a tight connection or you’re unfamiliar with a new airport, the credit card concierge can help to make sure someone is there waiting for you at the plane’s door when you land. These airport escorts can help you breeze through immigration, customs, security, and even baggage claim.

Some countries even have special VIP lounges for their escorted guests, so while you’re waiting for your baggage to arrive off the belt, you can relax in the lounge and have a refreshing drink or light meal before heading off to your hotel. Just keep in mind that while the concierge can find you the speciality service, you’re still the one paying the bill.

Bottom line

The easiest way that you’re going to find out what these concierges can do is to call and ask. Remember that just like with any employee you reach out to at a call center, your luck depends on who picks up the phone.

If you’re looking for something simple like flowers sent to a loved one or the random off the wall last minute rental car to avoid an oncoming hurricane, the credit card concierge can be your best friend in a time of need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is using the credit card concierge free.

While the service of the concierge typically is included in your card’s annual fee, keep in mind that they may have associated charges for the experiences that they book for you. Since many of these are tied to the credit cards, you can rightfully expect that anything that you ask them to book or charge for you will be charged to the card on file.

Does the concierge save time over just doing it myself?

The answer here is a giant “it depends” based on the complexity of your request. If you’re looking for a simple restaurant reservation, apps like OpenTable and Resy often have the same availability that a concierge might see. But, if you’re trying to plan out a couple of days itinerary for vacation, even getting a headstart with a travel concierge can be a huge time saver.

Should I get a credit card just for the concierge?

In short, no. The main driver of you getting a credit card should be the benefits that come with the card, such as fee waivers, bonus points, cash back or more. The credit card concierge isn’t a miracle worker, but instead a trusted source of information to help you in your day to day life.

Please note that card details are accurate as of the publish date, but are subject to change at any time at the discretion of the issuer. Please contact the card issuer to verify rates, fees, and benefits before applying.

Methodology

Our credit cards team has spent hours analyzing hundreds of credit cards. We took a deep dive into the details of each product and that analysis, combined with our years of experience covering credit cards, informed us as we developed these credit card rankings. Factors we considered included:

  • Business cards issued by Citibank.
  • Attributes of the cards.

How to choose a business credit card

There are a few different features any small business should consider before applying for a business credit card.

  • Fees: Most credit cards that charge an annual fee will come with additional benefits. However, you should analyze your spending habits before applying for a business card to see if these benefits outweigh the cost.
  • Rewards: Choose a card with bonus categories that align with your spending habits to maximize your earning potential.
  • APR: If your small business needs to finance a large purchase, getting a card with a 0% introductory APR could be helpful to avoid interest. Similarly, you might opt for a card with a lower standard variable APR if you think you might occasionally carry a balance.
  • Perks: When deciding on a business credit card, consider any benefits you would use, like travel insurance coverage, flight benefits or purchase protection.
  • Business benefits: Many business credit cards come with helpful features such as employee cards that allow for individual credit limits or integration with common expense management tools.

Is a business credit card right for me?

Even an individual proprietor or side gig is worthy of its own credit card. A business credit card allows you to easily separate business and personal spending and can simplify things when it’s time to pay taxes.

Businesses with multiple employees Bestcan benefit from authorized user cards which let employees that each have their own credit card number and you can set individual credit limits for each authorized user.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Citibank is the fourth largest bank in the country, with a widespread presence across the country. This makes the bank a reliable option for small businesses who like to do their banking in person at a Citibank. However, Citi’s credit card offerings are geared toward specific consumers (Costco shoppers and American Airlines loyalists), so Citibank might not be ideal for every small business.

Business credit cards work similarly to personal cards. Citibank will do a hard pull on your personal credit report when reviewing your application for a business credit card. This can lead to a temporary decrease in your credit score.

Citibank offers multiple business checking account options, but you do not need to have a Citibank business account to open a business credit card from Citi. There are four different CitiBusiness checking accounts that can be opened with just $1, but each charges a monthly maintenance fee. The fees are waivable, however, to do so you’ll need to maintain an average balance of between $5,000 and $10,000, depending on the account.

It’s important to note that you have to visit a Citi branch in person to open a business checking account; this cannot be done online, unlike applying for a Citi business credit card which doesn’t require an in-person visit.

Citi will consider several factors when reviewing your application. For both of Citi’s business credit cards, it’s recommended to have excellent credit. One is not easier to get approved for than the other, as it all depends on the specific application.

Mastercard Gold Card review: Beware of fool's gold

Danyal Ahmed

Editor's Note

Mastercard® gold card™ overview.

The Mastercard® Gold Card™ is a unique credit card made with 24-karat gold that aims to compete with other premium cards. Cardholders receive standard premium perks like an airline credit and Priority Pass access. Still, the card offers no standout perks that would easily justify its astronomical $995 annual fee — the highest among its competitors. Card rating*: ⭐⭐

* Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

From the same issuer who brought us the Mastercard® Black Card™ , there's an even more expensive metal card made with 24-karat gold. Capitalizing on the metal card trend, the Mastercard Gold Card seeks to wow cardholders, but do the card's benefits justify paying nearly $1,000 a year for the annual fee?

The Mastercard Gold Card requires a credit score of at least 740 and offers very few benefits for a steep $995 annual fee.

Today, we will explore the Mastercard Gold Card in depth to see what you get for this high annual fee, how it compares to other premium cards and if this card should have a place in your wallet.

Gold Card pros and cons

 gold card welcome offer.

The Gold Card disappoints right away by not offering a welcome bonus to new cardholders.

travel benefits costco citi card

This is just the start of the drawbacks of this card, as consumers looking to open a new credit card often look at high welcome bonus offers to help them jump-start their rewards, especially when it comes to premium cards geared toward travel.

In the past, the Gold Card offered a welcome bonus of 50,000 points. Since these points are worth 2 cents each, this bonus would be worth $1,000. Even if you could get this bonus, its value is lackluster compared to what cardholders receive from the welcome bonus on other premium cards.

Gold Card benefits

The Gold Card provides a few benefits that can help cardholders but do not come near recouping the ridiculous annual fee.

travel benefits costco citi card

The card's most valuable benefit is an annual $200 air travel credit. This flexible credit can be used toward airline tickets, bag fees, upgrades and other incidentals charged by the airline. A perk of this benefit is that you don't need to select an airline from a list of eligible carriers, a restriction that can be frustrating for those using a similar benefit on The Platinum Card® from American Express .

Typical of premium travel credit cards, the Gold Card also provides up to $100 in credit for a Global Entry or TSAPrecheck application fee. It also includes a Priority Pass Select membership , giving cardholders access to over 1,400 lounges worldwide.

With the card, you'll also get various travel protections , including trip cancellation and interruption insurance, and purchase protections like cellphone coverage. Cardholders also receive some benefits unique to Mastercard, such as invitation-only experiences to Priceless Golf and various subscription discounts.

Given the card's $995 annual fee, this benefits list is remarkably underwhelming. You'll get similar travel protections but far more valuable credits and comprehensive airport lounge access by choosing the Amex Platinum , Chase Sapphire Reserve® or Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card instead — and save at least $300 in annual fees each year.

Earning rewards on the Gold Card

Despite being marketed as a premium product, the Gold Card barely meets the standard for earning rates on the most basic cash-back rewards card. Cardholders earn just 1 point per dollar spent, with no bonus categories on purchases.

The only somewhat redeeming factor in these rates is that each point is worth 2 cents each, giving you a 2% return on all purchases.

travel benefits costco citi card

If you like the idea of a 2% return on all your purchases:1% when you buy and 1% when you pay, you could go with the Citi Double Cash® Card (see rates and fees ) instead and earn cash back at the same rate for no annual fee.

But if you're considering getting this card for its premium travel perks, you'd be better off with one of our other favorite travel rewards cards , all of which earn bonus rewards on travel purchases.

Redeeming rewards on the Gold Card

Gold Card rewards can be redeemed for cash back or airfare. You can redeem your points for airfare at a rate of 2 cents per point when you go to myluxurycard.com or call customer service to book.

If you want to redeem your points for cash back, you can get your cash either as a statement credit or deposited directly into a U.S. bank account. You'll get the same 2-cent-per-point rate with this redemption method.

travel benefits costco citi card

The option to get 2 cents per point when redeeming for airfare may sound appealing, especially when looking at competitors such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which only offers 1.5 cents per point when booking through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel portal .

However, the Sapphire Reserve earns 3 points per dollar on dining and travel purchases to the Gold Card's measly 1 point per dollar. Even with the lower redemption rate, you would get a 4.5% return on these purchases when booking through the Chase travel portal — over twice the value of the Gold Card's 2% return.

The uselessness of the Gold Card continues in the footsteps of its cheaper sibling, the Mastercard Black Card , by not offering the ability to transfer rewards to an airline or hotel partner. I'm a huge fan of finding redemption sweet spots to maximize my points and miles, so I can't imagine paying a premium annual fee for a card that doesn't give me this option.

Which cards compete with the Gold Card?

The absurd annual fee and lack of proper benefits to match such a price make the Gold Card easy to beat. Several cards offer a lower annual fee and so many benefits that you recoup it.

  • If you want a card that's gold : The American Express® Gold Card is a metal card that comes in your choice of gold or rose gold but with a much lower annual fee of $250 (see rates and fees ). The card comes with up to $240 in annual credits and offers an impressive 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide (including takeout and delivery) and on groceries at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 annual spending limit per calendar year). For more information, read our full review of the American Express Gold Card .
  • If you want an airline credit : The Platinum Card from American Express offers 5 points per dollar for airfare booked directly with an airline or through amextravel.com(on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year) and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. The card also comes with up to $1,500 in available statement credits annually, including an airline incidental credit of up to $200. For more information, read our full review of the Amex Platinum . Enrollment is required for select benefits.
  • If you want better earning rates : The Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 3 points per dollar on travel and dining purchases. It also comes with a $300 travel credit and access to Priority Pass and Chase lounges for a $550 annual fee. For more information, read our full review of the Sapphire Reserve .

For additional options, see our full list of the best travel credit cards .

Is the Gold Card worth it?

The Gold Card is even less worth it than its sibling, the Black Card . The lack of a welcome bonus, embarrassingly low earning rates and lackluster benefits should be enough to keep you away from this card and avoid a useless hard inquiry on your credit report. Unless the Gold Card receives a massive overhaul to become a proper credit card, I wouldn't recommend this card to anyone.

Bottom line

If you're looking for a metal credit card to make a statement every time you make a purchase, there are plenty of better options available — with lower annual fees, valuable benefits and more redemption options. While this shiny card may seem appealing on the surface, avoid it at all costs (and especially this one). Do yourself a favor and put that $995 toward a vacation or, at the very least, purchase actual gold instead.

Gas Credit Card Reviews

Best for gas or ev charging as a 3% bonus category: bank of america® customized cash rewards credit card - product name only.

If your spending habits change from time to time, having a card that allows you to customize your bonus categories can be a real plus. The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card gives you the option to choose one 3% bonus category each month, from a list:

  • Gas/EV charging
  • Online shopping
  • Drug stores
  • Home improvement/furnishings

Along with earning 3% back in the category you choose, you'll also earn 2% back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, up to a combined maximum of $2,500 in spending each quarter between the 3% and 2% categories (then you'll earn 1%).

If you're a Bank of America Preferred Rewards customer, the card gets even more compelling. Depending on how much you have on deposit with Bank of America and/or Merrill, you could earn 25% to 75% more rewards — that means you could earn 3.75% to 5.25% cash back on purchases in your choice category.

Gas Credit Card Frequently Asked Questions

What credit score do you need to get a gas credit card.

You need between a good credit score and an excellent credit score to be eligible to apply for most gas credit cards on our list. This translates to a FICO score of at least 670. However, some gas station chains have their own proprietary gas cards that you can use only at gas stations. These cards tend to be easier to get approved for, but keep in mind that you'll have very little flexibility in how you earn and redeem rewards.

Are gas credit cards worth it?

Gas credit cards are easily worth it for those who drive a lot — especially now that gas prices are extra unsavory. Earning rewards for these purchases can make the price increases a little easier to bear. It's even better if you pick a card that also earns bonus rewards in other categories where you spend a lot of money. For instance, road warriors who spend a lot of overnights away from home might consider a card like the US Bank Altitude Connect, which earns 4x on gas and travel (including hotels).

What's the best gas credit card with no annual fee?

The best gas credit card with no annual fee depends on what other categories you spend in and the rewards you prefer to earn. If you're a Costco member, it's hard to beat the earning rate on the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi. Otherwise, the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, Citi Custom Cash℠ Card, and U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card are all solid options.

Does Costco gas take credit cards?

Costco takes credit cards — but it only accepts Visa credit cards at U.S. Costco gas stations (like the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature® Card, and the U.S. Bank Altitude® Go Visa Signature® Card).

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Gas Credit Cards

Business Insider's credit cards division works independently of our company's business division to scrutinize and compare credit cards that are targeted for various demographics. We will tell you honestly which credit card is most likely to suit your financial goals — and the pitfalls you may encounter.

We considered rewards cards that are currently available to new applicants in deciding on the top credit cards for gas purchases, along with these factors:

  • Simplicity  — Does the card make it easy to redeem rewards, and have a program that's easy to understand?
  • Earning potential — Does the card earn generous rewards on gas, and are there other bonus categories that line up with everyday spending habits?
  • Welcome bonus — Credit cards that offer a sign-up bonus or other incentives are more appealing, especially if they don't charge an annual fee.
  • Options for different types of consumers — We included cards that are geared to all kinds of users, from products that earn travel points and cash-back to credit cards that earn rewards for electric vehicle charging.
