How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

Frequently asked questions, what is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight.

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside Canada over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Sunday. For international flights, Thursday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was August. If you’re booking an international flight, then September is the cheapest month to fly and December the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying direct is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than direct flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.ca.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Top 5 airlines flying to Anywhere

The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

I had a great travel experience as there weren't any delays and I was able to get to Mexico City on time for conference.

Mario was great. Made a night flight on a small aircraft pleasant and memorable.

It was great I love flying Delta and have never had a bad experience with them

They were 2 hours late departing with no explanation. I missed my connection, was rebooked not in correct seating that I paid for. Over all of was horrible. I now know why I've not flown Delta since 2018

I love the free wifi and headrest screens. I would consider Delta even more because of this but the seats aren't so great. The snacks aren't very good in my opinion. I bought a Bloody Mary and that was great! So just be comfortable with better snacks and the airline world will be yours.

Crew was not helpful. Other passengers in first class were over served blatantly over intoxicated.

We just spent $6000 on our first trip since pre COVID and we were stranded on the runway of our departing airport for 2 hours and 15 minutes while our layover was only an hour and a half. We were told by the pilot we were next for de-icing and then got bumped by 3 other planes. Pilot went on to say they only had one guy working the de-icing where they usually have at least 2. In Rochester. In the heart of winter. Someone missed a step and should be fired. I'm not done.

Food service was bare-bone. Better bot to have any at all rather than hand out premade coffees and cookies to random few passengers.

One of the crew members, a male complained about my bag being too heavy, which I felt was really unnecessary. I am disabled and would have carried it myself if I thought it was going to be a problem. In addition the landing was rough because everyone gasped in unison which it touched down.

Need a 2nd round of water for a 4+ hour flight

I loved the wifi, much better than Delta. Seats were old. and bathrooms dingy.

My tv was broken on the flight which is disappointing when you pay for a seat and expect a service

Always delays from Boston to Salt lake but this time was very long. Don’t understand while they board the passengers and then make them sit in the plane

The boarding and flight were ok, but there were several painful issues. The flight was 3:20 in the air and almost four hours door to door, but they only had snack packs on the plane. They really need to have food on longer flights or make it clear to everyone that they won’t have food. They also advertise free WiFi, but it did not work for 90% of this flight. Again, almost four hours door to door. If I had known I was flying spirit for JetBlue prices then I would have planned differently.

There was no wheelchair or wheelchair escort at the gate..unacceptable

Delayed 4 hours because of maintenance issue they knew about all day. Get another plane. Time is precious!

Surly, unhelpful ground staff at JFK. There was a complete lack of empathy—a flawed check-in ordeal caused us to miss our flight. All airlines that I have ever flown would have worked to help me solve the ticket problem. Instead, frontline employees shrugged their shoulders and pointed fingers at us for having made an error. I will do anything to avoid EVER flying on Jet Blue again. It well deserves its low rank among airlines.

no wifi and the aircraft was very old with tiny 4” screens.

Wheelchair assistance was not complete. The person left me at the departure gate without informing the groundstaff of my requirements. I had to walk to the departure counter to ask for help to reach the plane door. The crew informed me that in future they were not allowed to help passengers like me, senior citizen and Wheelchair passenger with placing their carry on bags in the overhead compartments!

Crew is way too many times on the intercom re explaining the same thing

Airline did not explain reasons why flight was delayed two hours. Explanations were badly needed and rarely provided. Problem seemed to clearly be the airline’s fault and not the fault of the weather or airport.

The seats were uncomfortable. The flight was almost 9 hours and they didn’t serve lunch

Very uncomfortable seats and seat backs, and I am only 5’9”. Delayed due to crew issues, spent a long time with no ventilation. Teeny overhead bins. Wifi worked well. Arrived safely.

Boarding was friendly and quick. While the plane model was older with no live tv, the entertainment was full of movies and tv shows. All food was available. Pilots were very communicative with status of the flight. Flight landed on time.

Amazing comfortable chairs great snacks super friendly staff pilots did excellent job. Smooth sailing all the way. Definitely be flying United more.

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

I was delighted that we were able to get on the 4:40 pm flight rather than our original booking at 6:55 pm!! Other than that, the flight was comfortable and landed early😊

Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.

I had the exit seat with all the leg room I could ask for. Great!

Our second leg to Jackson WY was unable to land due to weather. We were flown back to Dallas after stopping in SLC. We were given hotel rooms and vouchers. We were told that we would be back on the same plane in the morning. Instead we were given a different flight with different seats. Not a good experience. No one knew what was going on.

Overall it was good. The plane was small and the flight attendants on the Clt to gso route were not that friendly

I wish there were no credit card announcements. I paid hundreds of dollars, I don't need to pay again by sitting through advertisements.

Excellent- plan was barely populated. I cannot remember a flight where I was able/encouraged to stretch out!

Late arrival due to gate being blocked by stalled truck

delayed delayed delayed. was supposed to have a 2 hour layover and very nearly missed my connection.

American Airlines is awful!! Will never fly with them again. Connection flight left early leaving 22 people in Charlotte with no way to get to Key West for 24 hours. Would not provide hotel or any other accommodations. Bags were delayed two days.

Overall okay. Ipgrades ate worthless anymore. Wish I’d not been so loyal To them for so many years. Platinum many years. Gold for life. Usually 20th-30th on upgrade list.

It was good. Flights were all on time to start and landed early. Connections were easy.

The flight attendants were very personable, extremely friendly, and had a very good feeling of the energy around them not to mention they’re very funny and engaging. What made up for the discomfort of the seats and the fact that the plane sat for a long time on the Turmac. Not sure if the pilot was new, but the landing was very rough sort of like I was at a magic mountain theme park ride that was built in 1959

Bad weather is one thing but repeatedly changing gates AND terminals after several hours of delays was horrible. Additionally after the long delays, gate agents were delaying us evening further by being overly picky with personal item bag sizes. Get a grip.

Unfortunately not great, my flight was canceled with no notice given. I attempted to reach out to spirit airlines and have yet to receive any correspondence. I then had to book a new flight at two times the cost of the original.

The price is good but I feel that carry-on bag could be a little low and snacks prices

Retired military should be able to board with Active duty like Alligint airlines does

Don’t fly with Spirit unless you wanna be treated like trash. Racist employee too

Horrendous. Wish they would have just shot me in the leg instead.

I was denied my flight bc of my 2lb chihuahua, despite having sent in correct documents to board.

Sat on plane at gate for an hour and 45 minutes and the information being provided was not frequent enough and at times not truthful (waiting for paperwork about a part that had already been replaced...then watched maintenance guy bring part on board, install and leave, then told part was just installed...doesn't inspire confidence

The staff at the counter were very rude and unprofessional

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilising the best travel tools.

If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and July the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying direct is not possible and you will have to fly with stopover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a stopover for a number of reasons.

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.co.uk/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds.

You can also select the flexible 'weekend' or 'month' search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United Kingdom over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Tuesday. For international flights, Friday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs, but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re travelling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 week before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 week prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average.

It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with car hire, holiday packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional return ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

How airfares have changed

How hotels room rates have changed, how rental car prices have changed, how restaurant prices have changed, how the price of movies, theaters and concerts has changed, if you’re planning to travel in 2024….

Some good news for travelers: Airfares are cheaper than they were this time last year.

Last month, airfares were down 6.4% versus the same month in 2023, and they are even 3% lower than what they were in January 2020, before the pandemic. That’s according to the latest set of Consumer Price Index data released in February 2024 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is based on January 2024 prices.

Car rentals price are also lower — down 14% versus January 2023. Hotel prices barely budged since last year, up a nominal 0.7%.

Falling travel prices is a bright spot for customers, considering that the price of pretty much everything else is going up. In fact, average consumer prices across all items rose 3.1% year-over-year through January.

According to NerdWallet's Travel Price Index, the overall cost of travel is down 1% from the same month in 2023 and up 12% compared with January 2020. In short, expect the same trip taken this year to cost slightly less than it did this time last year (largely due to the steep drop in airfares), but more than it would if you had taken the trip before the pandemic.

NerdWallet's Travel Price Index combines data from individual travel categories tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index data, such as airfares, lodging, meals and rental cars.

Overall prices for the past 12 months through January 2024 rose 3.1% before seasonal adjustment. Still, not every individual line item experiences inflation at the same rate — especially when it comes to travel prices. Some types of trips might actually be more or less expensive than in the past, depending on if your trip involves airfare versus driving, if you’re staying in a hotel and whether it involves a rental car.

To help you better understand how travel prices have changed, NerdWallet honed in on five categories:

Car rentals.

Food away from home.

Movies, theaters and concerts.

NerdWallet then compared those costs to their same prices a month ago and a year ago. And given how significantly COVID-19 altered the state of travel, the data also compares today’s prices to the same cost of those things pre-pandemic. For example, January 2024 is compared to January 2020 as the last corresponding pre-pandemic month.

Here’s what today’s travel prices look like:

When comparing January 2024 prices versus January 2023, U.S. airfares are down 6.4%. Even compared to pre-pandemic prices, airfares are 3% lower in January 2024 than they were in January 2020.

Prices for lodging away from home — including hotels and motels in U.S. cities — did increase 5.2% month-over-month. Though, they are largely flat (up a nominal 0.7%) over the past year.

Unlike airfares that are lower than pre-pandemic prices, hotel and motel prices are significantly higher than what they were pre-pandemic.

High rental car prices were one of the biggest stories of pandemic-era travel. Though prices have leveled off, they are still up an astounding 16.5% versus the same month in 2020. Still, the costs are better now than they were a year ago. Car rental prices are down 14.1% year-over-year.

Food prices consistently rise nearly every month, and this month was no exception. In January 2024, the cost of food away from home was up 5.1% versus the same month in 2023. And prices are far higher than pre-pandemic, with January 2024 prices coming in at 25.6% higher than what they were in January 2020.

Like restaurants, entertainment prices see fairly consistent increases — save for a small dip in 2020. Prices are now up 19.6% from what they were in January 2020. The year-over-year price increases, though, haven’t been as drastic — up just 5.2%.

Especially if you’re building your next vacation budget based on an early-pandemic-era trip, expect to pay far more now for pretty much every expense. Yet even though prices constantly feel like they’re getting higher, you can still save on travel with a little planning.

Paying for travel with miles and points versus cash isn’t as daunting a task as it may seem. Frequent flyer miles and hotel points can be accrued not just for recurring travel, but through other outlets as well. Credit card rewards and welcome bonuses can be one of the most popular ways to accrue a big stash of points for a lot less effort than living your life out of a suitcase.

To avoid the costs of eating out, head to local grocery stores — which can be a fun activity on its own — or pack snacks from home. While in an airport, head to the lounge. Many credit cards have partnerships with airport lounge operators ( Priority Pass is a popular one) where you can typically expect complimentary snacks and drinks.

Methodology

NerdWallet conducted an analysis of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index data released by the U.S. Department of Labor, which was most recently updated in February 2024 and measures prices of items like travel, groceries and cars. Prices usually change every month, but some prices change more than others.

Keep in mind, this data is based on January 2024 information, even though it is released in February 2024, so prices you actually see may have actually improved (or gotten even worse) than this data, because it lags one month behind.

And even within the realm of travel, some expenses might go up, while others might go down.

The NerdWallet Travel Price Index combines data from the Consumer Price Index, weighted by the estimated spending in each category, which is based on 2019 travel expenditure data from the BLS.

Here are the spending categories considered, and how heavily each was weighted:

Flights: 29%.

Car rental: 13%.

Lodging: 30%.

Entertainment: 7%.

We’ve all heard the horror stories of flying on a budget airline, but take those with a grain of salt. The reason? These airlines have grown significantly in recent years, and have quadrupled in size since the last time oil prices were soaring into oblivion.

Additionally, more people are turning to budget airlines to book their flights, from a mere 4% of travelers in 2008 to 15%, and growing today.

You do have to be mindful of hidden fees on budget airlines, including for carry-ons and such, but in the end, you can wind up with serious savings.

Use a travel agency

This last bit of advice might sound like a relic from a time gone by, but booking with a travel agency can still save you money, even in the era of oodles of travel websites.

For one reason, they have expertise that can be exceptionally valuable, especially if you are planning a complicated trip to a place you’ve never been, like South Asia or the Middle East.

Additionally, you often don’t have to pay extra to utilize an agent, as their compensation comes from the hotels and services they work with. Just inquire about fees up front, and prepare to save.

Pay less to fly: New strategies for finding cheap airfares now

So you want to save money when you book a plane ticket? Well, you won't if your airline has anything to say about it.

Airlines will rake in a record $964 billion from passengers in 2024, up 7.6% from last year, according to an estimate by the International Air Transport Association.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

And now more than ever, it's a cat-and-mouse game, which I discovered when I tried to buy a ticket from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro last week.

It's a one-hour flight and typically costs between $40 and $60 one way. But on the Friday I wanted to fly, the prices fluctuated wildly by the minute. In the morning, they were around $230. By the evening, they dropped back down to $50.

Air travel may be about to get better. Here's what it means for your next flight.

Passengers want to get off the plane first. Here's how you can do it.

How can you find a cheap airline ticket?

Airlines are using artificial intelligence to predict how much you're willing to pay for a ticket. They're also harvesting information you give away during an airfare search, like your browser, geographical location and type of computer, to show you the most expensive airfare. But there are some new strategies you can use to outsmart them.

"The price of an airline ticket depends on several factors," explained Maria Atanasova, a manager of Flights365 , an online agency that specializes in fare bargains. "They include availability, seasonality, and fare rules."

In other words, you can get a deal on a flight if there's lots of availability and fewer passengers. But if everyone wants to fly and there are few flights – well, then they gotcha.

And let's be honest: Lately, it feels like they have you over a barrel. Airfares have already started to rise as the summer travel season comes into focus. The airlines are using powerful AI and algorithms to squeeze more money from you. How do you fight back?

Here are some proven strategies for finding a cheaper fare anytime

If you haven't booked an airline ticket in a while, here are a few strategies that will help you find a lower price:

◾ Be flexible : " Flexibility is the key when you're looking for a lower fare," said Phyllis Stoller, president of The Women's Travel Group , a tour operator. For example, she saves money by booking one of the legacy carriers across the Atlantic and then switching to a European discounter like Ryanair or Easyjet for intra-European flights. Pro tip: On some travel sites, like Google Flights, you can leave the destination field blank, and it will find an inexpensive destination. (On Google Flights, click the blue "explore" button.)

◾ Track your flight prices : You do this for free using a site like Skyscanner . When you're searching for flights, just look for the "Get Price Alerts" button. You can also set it so that you get notified in case there are even better deals on alternative routes.

◾ Consider bundles and packages : Online travel agencies and membership stores like Costco may offer package deals that – once you calculate the value of each component – save you lots of money. Airlines also offer bundled fares which include the cost of checked bags or give you extra flexibility for a lower price than if you bought everything separately "Bundled fares can offer a better overall value than the base fare," said Charlie Neville, a marketing director of JayWay Travel , a tour operator that specializes in Europe.

◾ The latest: Kayak PriceCheck : The latest airfare search tool is a new feature by Kayak introduced this week called PriceCheck . It allows you to take a screenshot of your itinerary and upload it to the airfare search app. Kayak will check the price against hundreds of sites and find a better one, if available. Kayak's tool could tip the scales just a little in favor of the traveler.

What doesn't work? Well, in my experience, there's no day of the week when airfares are cheaper, and those pricey newsletters that promise to send you "deals" are a little overrated. And the least useful strategy is buying from a "discount" or "low-fare" airline. Those carriers are the opposite of what they claim. Everything is extra, so by the time you've finished paying for your flight, you've shelled out more than you would on Southwest Airlines or another legacy carrier.

Here's how to protect yourself: Hackers are coming for your travel accounts

What are some new tricks for finding a low airfare?

But there are also a few new – or newly popular – strategies for getting a low airline ticket price. They include:

◾ Reverse planning : With airfares soaring into record territory, some airfare watchers have noticed that travelers are creating itineraries around cheap fares. "Travelers don't focus on a destination," explained Mercedes Zach, a travel expert at ASAP Tickets , "But rather, they build their trip around the cheapest flights available from their departure airport. And only after that, they decide on the travel dates and things to do in the country they're visiting."

◾ Google Flights : Google Flights has quietly added a lot of helpful information on airfare searches, including airfare trend information, information about seasonality, and recommendations on the best time to visit. Tim Leffel, author of The World's Cheapest Destinations , says many travelers are using it to find a place that offers cheaper airline tickets. Pro tip: Some airlines, such as Southwest and Allegiant, are not on Google Flights, "but they will probably follow similar trends for pricing," said Leffel.

◾ Clear your cookies and use a VPN : This year, I've been hearing from more regular travelers who routinely use a Virtual Private Network to change their geographic location, clear their cookies and use an "anonymous" tab to force airline sites to display the lowest airfare. "Comparing prices on different gadgets can be beneficial too," says William Belov, CEO of Infatica.io , a web technology firm. "We've come across cases where a user searched for tickets to Bali and found the same flight priced at $1,600 on the computer but only $1,100 on the mobile device.

How I saved money on my ticket to Rio (sort of)

I admit, I felt like a fool when I saw the $230 airfare to Rio. A few weeks earlier, I'd found an abundance of cheap fares on the same route and decided to wait. If you're ever in the same situation, don't be like me. If you see a fare you like, buy it before it's gone.

My next step: I used Google Flights to get a sense of how airfares were trending. If you click on the "price graph" button, it'll show you which direction fares are headed. But Google Flights shows you fares by the day and not by the hour. If it did, then it would have revealed the quirky jumps in airfares that happen during the day.

I watched the pattern repeat itself every day. Fares were highest in the morning and lower in the evening. At night and in the early morning, they sometimes went down into the green zone, which Google Flights classifies as "cheapest."

When I spotted a low fare, I felt like I was fishing. I got a hit on a $120 fare, but when I went to book, it wasn't available. The next morning, the price had risen again to $230. The next evening, fares didn't fall at all. But the following morning, I saw a $150 ticket, and I booked it.

Did I pay too much? Probably.

Oh, who am I kidding? Definitely.

But I consider the extra money to be tuition. I should have taken my own advice and bought a cheaper ticket when I first saw it.

Timing, as they say, is everything. And in a world where airlines are trying to squeeze every last penny from you, time is not on your side.

Kayak's Newest Flight Price-matching Feature Helps You Find the Cheapest Airfare — and We Tested It Out

And all it takes is a screenshot.

Kayak is making it much easier for travelers to ensure they get the best flight deal thanks to the rollout of its new PriceCheck tool.

Leveraging the power of AI, Kayak’s PriceCheck is “a new patent-pending price comparison tool” that’s free to use for mobile app users of the travel search engine. Travelers can upload a screenshot of their airfare — from any website — and Kayak will search across the competition to ensure they’re getting the best possible deal.

For instance, Travel + Leisure inputted a Google Flights screenshot for a round-trip booking from New York to Seoul on Korean Air this spring. While the original price from the screenshot was $1,974, Kayak’s PriceCheck tool was able to find the same flight for as low as $1,830 on a competing site — resulting in nearly a $150 savings.

In addition, Kayak also provided a few alternative flights from different airlines that were more than $700 cheaper than the original itinerary. On the same screen, Kayak offers travelers the ability to set a price alert to get notified when airfares change for this particular flight.

"We’re constantly challenging the status quo when it comes to travel planning - this time with AI,” said Matthias Keller, Chief Scientist & SVP of Technology at Kayak, in a statement shared exclusively with T+L. “From KAYAK PriceCheck, a patent-pending game-changer that helps travelers quickly discover if they've secured the cheapest price, to Ask KAYAK, an AI companion that understands travel desires like never before – we’re not just offering tools, we’re ushering in a new era of personalized travel planning. Our team had a lot of fun building these new products, and we’re excited for travelers to check them out too."

Kayak shares some tips on the app and says that the tool works best when all flight itinerary details for a single traveler are clearly visible in the screenshot, including the price, travel dates, airline, and origin and destination airports.

Along with this announcement, the company has launched “Ask Kayak,” another free feature that allows users to plan around destinations, travel dates, budget, and more. All of these new features come as other artificial intelligence services have come about recently to improve the overall trip planning experience, including Expedia and Google’s AI tools.

Rates for Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. Territories and Possessions are set by the Department of Defense .

Rates for foreign countries are set by the State Department .

2 Choose a date

Rates are available between 10/1/2021 and 09/30/2024.

The End Date of your trip can not occur before the Start Date.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.
