Black Diamond Tours: Your Backcountry Guide to The Real Japan

Backcountry ski and snowboard guiding in Niseko Hokkaido, Japan since 2003. BDT offers the best backcountry tours from single day to multi-day trips.

Black Diamond Tours was started in 1998 with a single guide based out of the Black Diamond Lodge. This quickly grew with the demand to include a roster of world class guides offering lift assisted powder hunting, backcountry tours, and multi-day trips. Meanwhile, the legend of Hokkaido’s powder spread to the world. This pushed us to expand our operation to offer heli, cat, and snowmobiling in private zones for the best powder skiing and snowboarding in Northern Japan.

Now, 18 years later our passion for outdoor adventures is still at the core of Black Diamond Tours. From guided day trips to multi-day Hokkaido tours, mechanized tours , booking accommodations, we create the best guided backcountry tours for any budget.

BDT is also offering summer trips around Hokkaido including: mountain biking, hiking, wakeboarding, and more.

Niseko Backcountry: A Guide to the Best Powder Skiing in Japan

Hitting the slopes in Niseko is a dream come true for any skier or snowboarder. The world-renowned resort in Hokkaido, Japan is known for its incredible powder snow, colloquially referred to as “Japow.” And if you’re looking to take your powder game to the next level, you should definitely consider heading out to the Niseko backcountry for maximum “pittage” opportunities!

At Rhythm Japan, we’re proud to be a premier provider of outdoor rental, retail, and guiding services in Niseko and beyond. We know the terrain, the snow conditions, and the best spots to shred in the backcountry. So if you’re an experienced rider looking for an adventure, we’ve got you covered.

niseko powder tour

Why is Japan Powder so Good?

First things first, let’s talk about why Japan powder is so highly coveted. It all comes down to the unique climate and geography of Hokkaido. The region experiences cold temperatures and high humidity, which creates perfect conditions for snowfall. The snow crystals that form in Hokkaido are light and fluffy, which means that they don’t compact as easily as other types of snow. This leads to deeper powder, smoother rides, and overall epic conditions for skiers and snowboarders.

niseko powder tour

Do You Need a Powder Board/Skis for Niseko?

If you’re planning to hit the slopes in Niseko, it’s highly recommended that you use powder-specific skis or snowboards. These types of equipment are designed to perform better in deep snow conditions and help you float on top of the powder. Using regular skis or boards in powder can be challenging and tiring, and you’ll likely end up getting stuck or sinking into the snow.

At Rhythm Japan, we offer a wide range of powder-specific rental equipment to ensure that you have the best possible experience in Niseko. With our free rental swaps you can easily switch your gear in case the snow conditions change.

We also stock a wide variety of powder boards and skis from much-coveted local brands such as Island Snowboards and Offshore Snowsports. These are designed and tested for Hokkaido conditions and make for a great living room or man-cave / lady-cave-centrepiece to remember your japow days once the equipment hits retirement.

If it’s your first time riding deep powder, our Instructors and Guides can help you master your equipment and provide riding tips so you can spend your day floating rather than swimming.

Do You Need to go to the Backcountry to Find the Best Powder?

While there’s plenty of great powder to be found within the resort boundaries of Niseko, the best and deepest snow is often found in the backcountry – especially if the legendary “powder taps” have been turned off for a few days leaving the resort area tracked out.

The backcountry refers to areas that are not within the controlled boundaries of the resort, and therefore not patrolled or maintained by resort staff. Backcountry riding requires a higher level of skill and knowledge, and comes with its own set of risks and dangers.

If you are interested in venturing beyond the resort boundaries, we strongly recommend contacting Rhythm Rides so our experienced local guides can help you maximise your time safely.

niseko powder tour

Where to Access the Backcountry in Niseko?

There are several lift-accessed gates around Niseko, Rusutsu, and Kiroro resorts that provide access to the backcountry. These gates are marked and numbered, and each has its own set of rules and regulations that riders must follow. It’s important to note that entering the backcountry through these gates requires proper equipment, training, and knowledge of the area. There are also a number of strictly out-of-bounds areas which must be avoided due to high avalanche risk and dangerous cliffs.

In addition to the lift-accessed gate system, there are a number of popular areas in the region such as Goshiki Onsen, and, of course Mt Yotei, which also offer excellent touring opportunities during the Spring season.

At Rhythm Japan, we offer guided backcountry tours that provide access to some of the best and safest areas in Niseko’s backcountry . Choosing a local expert from our Rides team will help you make the most of your day outside of resort boundaries, as they know the best and safest routes.

niseko powder tour

Understanding The Niseko Gate System

The Niseko Gate System is a set of regulations and guidelines that are in place to help riders safely access and navigate the backcountry. The system includes marked gates, information boards, and rules for entry and exit. Each gate has a different level of difficulty and risk, and riders must have the appropriate level of skill and equipment to enter. It’s important to understand and follow the Niseko Gate System to ensure your safety and the safety of others.

You can learn more about the Niseko Gate System at our Terrain Guide .

Do You Need Avalanche Gear in Niseko’s Backcountry?

In short, the answer is a resounding yes. Safety should always be a top priority when skiing or snowboarding in any backcountry area, and Niseko is no exception. The resort area is famous for its deep powder snow, but it’s also known for its unstable snowpack and high avalanche risk in the backcountry.

Avalanche gear includes an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe. It’s essential to practise using this gear before heading out to the backcountry.

Safety gear is included with all our guiding programs   along with other backcountry essentials such as touring skis and splitboards.

In addition to having the proper gear, it’s crucial to have the knowledge and skills to assess the snowpack and avalanche conditions. Rhythm Japan’s guides have an average of 17 years experience and have spent an average of five years exploring the Niseko area and Backcountry terrain. Not only do they know the best routes to find the best conditions, but they are all certified experts in avalanche risk, first aid and rescue, and powder riding technique. Ride with Rhythm for peace of mind.

Niseko is a world-renowned ski resort that offers some of the best powder snow in the world. The backcountry terrain around the resort is extensive, and it’s a great place to experience deep powder snow. However, it’s important to be aware of the risks and take necessary precautions.

Using the services of Rhythm Rides can make your Niseko experience much safer and more enjoyable. We also offer an extensive range of rental and retail services to meet all your needs. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, Rhythm Japan has the gear and knowledge to make your Niseko experience unforgettable.

FULLY INSTRUCTED/GUIDED & HOSTED POWDER TOUR

Based in Niseko for the first four days, our instructors will help you to improve your powder skiing whilst exploring the mountains of Niseko United, as well as surrounding resorts such as Moiwa and Rusutsu. Our flexible itinerary will have you chasing the best conditions at each of these ski areas.

We then transfer to Otaru with one of our backcountry guides who will introduce you to backcountry safety equipment and run a workshop on the fundamentals of avalanche safety, before we head further beyond the resorts for deeper powder!

THIS IS AN INSTRUCTIONAL BASED TOUR THAT CONCLUDES WITH 2 DAYS OF DEEP POWDER GUIDING

We have designed this tour to maximise instruction time with a max of 4 spots each instructor/guide. This way those who are new to the techniques required to ski Japan’s deep snow can build confidence to make the most of their time in Hokkaido.

You may have ridden some powder on piste or on top of compacted off-piste but you may have never ridden the bottomless powder we get regularly in Japan. Your instructors will structure your learning so that you gain confidence and progress away from the groomers to experience the deep fresh snow and terrain you have always wanted to conquer.

With years of powder instructing behind them, Whiteroom’s experienced instructors have found that often simple technique correction and confidence building will unlock the secret to powder skiing/riding. You and your instructors will analyse and then improve your technique and build on what you have learnt through goal setting and skill development.

By the end of the tour, you will have progressed from piste to powder and a whole new world will have opened up.

Ability Level –   Advanced on-piste, new to powder to high intermediate in powder

This tour is specifically designed for skiers who are confidently in control at all times of their speed and demonstrate rhythm on moderate black diamond piste trails, can make parallel and carving turns and can ski very well at speed on intermediate runs.

You should be adept at adjusting to the size and length of your turns and are relatively new to the techniques required to ski deep powder. To get the most out of this tour we recommend you have a good level of fitness. Please make an honest assessment of your abilities whilst keeping fitness in mind as to not slow the group down.

Niseko Area (INSTRUCTION)

Niseko United Boasting the biggest network of trails in the region, Niseko has something for everyone that can easily satisfy anyone’s hunt for powder over multiple days. With long flowing trails to break back in your ski legs there is also plenty of terrain to progress into. The rolling treed areas and open bowls will allow you to get off the beaten track and into some of Japan’s famous powder. With 4 distinct resort areas across the volcano shaped mountain you will be spoilt for choice.

Moiwa With a more relaxed feel and far fewer people than it’s larger neighbour, Moiwa can be a great option for building some confidence back on the slopes and dipping into some ungroomed off trail terrain. Although smaller in size Moiwa has long been a locals favourite with a mix of wide groomed slopes and open tree islands to explore.

Rusutsu With wide open trails that are expertly maintained along with hidden powder stashes Rusutsu offers an awesome variety of terrain across its two mountains. Known also for it’s amazing tree skiing, you will have plenty of options for jumping into fresh powder and improving your skills in the perfectly gladed birch tree forests that Japan is famous for.

Otaru Area (GUIDING)

Kiroro Home to some of the highest snowfall totals in Hokkaido, Kiroro is a vast ski area that has lots of variable terrain for anyone looking to get their Japan powder fix. On a resort guided day expect long runs down from the top of the gondola where you can take advantage of some expert grooming before ducking off the side of the trails into countless tree islands and plenty of powder.

Kokusai Like stepping back in time to how skiing and riding was in Japan 15 years ago Kokusai offers an off the beaten track experience that few visitors see. Easily accessible from both the Niseko or Otaru areas, this resort is full of perfectly groomed wide trails that are great for ripping fast turns and laps. Mellow tree islands allow for people wanting to get a feel for what tree skiing is all about.

Teine Teine was home to the skiing events at the 72 Olympics and has plenty of open terrain to explore within the resort. From steep well groomed trails to low angle trees on the edge of the resort boundary, Teine allows for some great turns right above Sapporo city. A run past the old Olympic torch is also a great photo opportunity.

This itinerary is an example. The tour will be run largely by the weather and each day will fit around where the best conditions are. This is the beauty of such a tour.

niseko powder tour

Upon landing at Sapporo’s Chitose Airport you’ll be transferred by Resort Liner to the Hirafu Welcome Centre where you’ll be met by our team and then checked into Full Note. That night we’ll host you in the Half Note Bar where you’ll meet our team who will run you through the tour, weather and answer any questions you have.

( NOTE : If you wish to organise rental equipment it is advised that you try to arrive with enough time on the arrival day to be fitted – seek advice from your consultant )

First day of exploring Niseko! For your first 4 days on snow your instructors will take a look at your technique and run you through powder skiing fundamentals, gear setup, stance, turn shape/size, technique and how this affects your speed in powder. At the end of the day, we will all enjoy a traditional Japanese meal and a few drinks around the fire.

Today we’ll show you how big Niseko is! We’ll hunt out some powder stashes and explore how we move on skis mainly vertically and rotationally and how this affects turn size and turn shape, in various treed areas and powder-filled terrain.

It’s time to check out one of our favourites spots – Moiwa Ski Area. We will spend the day carving up their super wide piste, guiding you through the trees and working on those deep powder turns on a variety of pitches and gladed areas.

Day tour to Rusutsu Resort. We will spend the day guiding you through the trees and valleys of Rusustu, as well as their very quirky hotel! You should now have a new found confidence when skiing powder and maybe even look to start hitting some of many natural features in Rusutsu. Time to take it to the next level!

After 4 days of honing your powder skills in the Niseko area it’s time to pack your bags as we head to the historical port city of Otaru. You’ll be joined by a new guide who will introduce you to backcountry safety equipment and run you through a workshop on the fundamentals of avalanche safety, before we start to head further beyond the resorts for deeper powder! Then in the afternoon we will hit the road and enjoy a cultural excursion which may include the Nikka Whiskey Distillery, exploring beautiful Otaru, and visiting the famous canals.

Pack your onsen gear and a snorkel as we’ll be heading off to Kiroro today where your guide will show you some deep powder stashes. By now you’ll really be getting the hang of the techniques you need to ski Japan’s deep pow. This powder gem has some awesome terrain and fresh lines all day. An onsen on the way home is also a popular option!

Today we’ll visit Kokusai resort, which also consistently receives huge amounts of snow each winter and has some great backcountry options. We’ll finish with a farewell dinner and sample the amazing seafood this area is famous for, to round off your amazing Japan powder experience. The snow festival tour will also include a trip to Sapporo  to see the huge ice sculptures, a spectacular event that has been running for over 70 years!

After an epic week of progression and powder-filled adventure it’s time to say goodbye to your new friends and transfer by train to Sapporo’s Chitose Airport with memories to last a lifetime!

Enjoying great powder in japan while getting tips to improve riding. The guides have a very strong knowledge of the terrain and able to read our skill levels quickly and find a suitable area for us to enjoy powder.

– Wei Chen 2020

I think the thing that stood out to me most was the incredible team that Whiteroom have. When we first arrived Yu met us with a huge smile, friendly nothing is a problem attitude and was incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout our whole stay. Kieron was great she always asked about our day, made us feel at home and provided great service.

Even when I went down to the office to sort out a bus transfer Kate phoned around for me, recommended a cheaper ski pass rate than we were going to get and sorted everything out effortlessly. I commented to a friend how nice it was that everyone at full note called us by our names, this again an example of what stood out and a reflection of Whiteroom service and brand. An impressive business and service example for others to follow.

Nate (Guide) was a fantastic guide he always went out of his way to ensure we were getting the most out of the tour. His willingness to help out by dropping us off places, recommendations and follow up were brilliant. The pics and videos he took will be treasured. He always followed up on requests, kept us up to date, read the group well and went the extra mile. Fantastic instruction and guiding.

– Wayne Goodman 2020

Excellent! Thoroughly enjoyed the powder progression tour. Nate was a great instructor, explained technique in a way that I could really understand & I think I will remember. He took good care of us, was kind and really went above and beyond to make sure we all had a fun time, including the restaurants, onsens etc. Nate was very patient and good fun to ski with, thank you

– Grace Bickmore 2020

Loved the guides, you were both fantastic and were great company.

Your knowledge of the mountains was amazing and you looked after us very well.

– Yuhan Wei 2019

The tour was amazing. The snow just got better and better each day. Mike (guide) was a total champion and all round top bloke. His mountain knowledge was exceptional and he was able to find us the best skill-appropriate conditions day in – day out. He was very clear in his communication on where and what to do and never strayed too far ahead where we were unable to find him. The only down side of him going first were that he got the first tracks, but someone needed to show us the way! The lodge team were fantastic, with yummy food and clean facilities. The lodge is looking a bit worn, and beds on the hard side, but is well suited to providing a great experience. Thanks again and I will be booking more tours in the future.

– Chris Johnston 2019

Great guide. Mike (guide) was really in tune with what we (the snowboarders) were looking for. Keido (consultant) was really responsive with booking and general questions. Everything worked really well – made the trip very easy.

– Matthew Crompton

Loved – Good group of people and down to earth guides. Flexibility of tour to move to the better powders locations. Learning to ski in powder = want to do more. The more the guides spend with the group showing them the local area, cuisine and attractions, outside of skiing, adds to the experience. Highlights – Snow conditions in Moiwa and Rusutsu . Our group and JAPOW! (and being able to ski it eventually/sort of). Improve – Not much to say, maybe, leave earlier in morning for first runs of the fresh stuff 🙂

– Kristian Dunn 2018

I was travelling by myself on this trip and had never been to Japan before. Greg from Whiteroom tours and the staff at Full Note Pension really put the stoke into every day.

Greg took our group to mountains where the conditions were mint for each day. I don’t think we did a groomed run at any time during our stay. It was always backcountry and trees and somehow we’d pop out at the bottom of each lift (which never had lines). Epic.

My powder technique definitely improved from being challenged in more difficult terrain and from Greg’s instruction. He was super approachable and I felt safe everywhere we went.

Full Note Pension totally catered for my vegetarian diet. Tomoko even made a separate welcoming and farewell dinner for me. She even drove me to the supermarket so I could buy broccoli. Haha what a legend! Yu Kondo did not allow me to lift a finger haha. He carried all my luggage and made sure I had everything I needed. Excellent manager.

If I could afford this trip each year, I would do it…and bring a mass of my buddies. It’s definitely worth it. The pension is in a great spot and is beautiful, the guides are super friendly and challenge you, you visit various onsens with a cold beer and the guides drive you everywhere. All you have to think about is waking up to freshies and having an epic day riding.

– Meg Hamilton 2016

Everything was amazing! I have never enjoyed snowboarding as much as being on this tour. Greg was an awesome guide – very encouraging and helpful. Full note was great – clean and spacious. I will definitely be making a whiteroom guided tour an annual thing. Thankyou so much!

Guides were really great, so helpful with my skiing technique, a wonderful experience overall, so glad i booked the otaru extension, the extra couple of days on different mountains was a perfect way to finish my trip. Thank you

Best couple of weeks of snowboarding I’ve had! Greg was awesome! The staff at the fullnote were excellent, but sharing bathrooms etc is not my thing, I will look to stay in separate accommodation next time. Consider expanding your options on that front. I’ll be back for the Explorer next year!

– Brendon Wilson

Greg shared lots of great hint’s and tip’s to aid my boarding during the first few days when condition weren’t great. As soon as there was some fresh snow Greg took to the best resorts and best conditions. Also felt safe within his supervision in the back country. Showed us spot’s we’d never find on our own. The best part had to be the 3 day add on to Otaru, lovely city, great meals and most of all we got some all time conditions at Kiroro, Kokusai then Sapporo-Teine. Everyday better than the last, giving us a great end to the trip. Cheers for a great tour and looking forward to an explorer tour in the future!!! Cheers

– Neil

Hi Paul, Hope you’re well. Just thought id drop you an email with regards to the Progression Tour 28/1-4/02. Wow, what an awesome time I had. Not sure how to draft such a response but here goes:

👍🏼 – Greg Overall is a true asset to your organisation. His instruction, advice, inspiration and patience was unbelievable and his mountain knowledge had us in the goods every time. And not to mention he is a stand out guy, great banter, plenty of laughs and good value. Considering id only had 5 days on snow in the past 25 years, by the trips end i was riding lines i never thought i would.

– The two days we had at The Zoo were definite highlights of the trip, fresh tracks all day both days to the point where we couldn’t be assed to do another lap on the second day, our hearts were keen but our bodies weren’t.

– Moiwa stashes ran a very close second (or third) to The Zoo – Staff at Full Note were great, friendly, great breakfasts to get the day started and cold beers to round out the day

– Happy not to have spent more than the 1 day at Niseko. Maybe conditions help dictate this but even on my additional 9 days i only rode there 1 other day.

– Tim, Viv and Ronan in the office were great, assisted in getting my Niseko-Asahikawa journey sorted and most valuable to my last few days got me on a ride to Kiroro for my last day. After a couple of lean days locally and a lay day the powder at Kiroro that day was awesome, great day to finish riding.

– Yu-san driving me down to Kutchan Station on my departure day. Overall, a solid trip with great staff, legend guide and with only 3 of us in our group no complaints. One of the other guys in my group and another who i met on the following tour are looking at booking again for next year (leave pass from wifey permitting) and tacking on a few additional days afterwards on the provisos Greg will be guiding us 😜. The girl (Lisa) who won the trip and ‘bunked’ my additional nights at Full Note i took out for lunch on her first day……thinking she should have taken me to lunch. 😜

Congratulations on a well tuned operation, thanks to all involved and i would happily recommend Whiteroom to friends and family for future trips. Keep me posted as to when 2018 dates will be available.

Hi Paul/Graeme, Just wanted to say thanks to Whiteroom for an awesome couple of days guiding in Japan last week. Leonie was a brilliant guide. She took us to places we would never have discovered on our own, found some great snow for us and was a lot of fun to spend the days with and passed on some really useful local knowledge. Couldn’t have asked for more. I will definitely be recommending Whiteroom to friends and will be using you again on future trips. Cheers

Hi Paul Thank you for organising this tour. All went well. I did progress my powder skiing, I had never imagined that it would be so much fun. Hard to get back to skiing on Aussie snow.

I can’t praise Leonie enough, she was a good teacher, very organised and helpful, a lively personality. Adam fitted the same picture, I did not ski much with him, but he also was considerate and helpful.

Thanks again

– Hanne

Very helpful before trip. Great guides. Recommended.

" This is one of the best holidays I have ever had. Guides so friendly & their knowledge & tips on instruction on the snow was great to progress my snowboarding. Mic was so good! Crew I meet & travelled with, I had a blast. I would go back to Japan tomorrow, was so much fun! The cultural experiences were a buzz too and gave the tired body a break from all the powder "

Visit Niseko

Niseko, Japan is one of the most stunning places on the planet. It is stunning not only for its sweeping, elegant winter landscape but also for the peaks, hills and mountains that run from coast to coast. During winter, mountains become a paradise for powder skiing.

Infinite powder, accessible backcountry, and the best snow on earth… it’s easy to see why Niseko gets so much attention.

The famous powder snow found here is a product of the weather descending from Russia, moisture absorbed from the Sea of Japan, and the wind blowing from Siberia – all combined these elements create the perfect recipe for huge quantities of perfect, feather-light powder snow to blanket northern Japan for months on end.

For snow-riders, there can never be too much snow – and the powder capital of Japan never fails to deliver. Waking up to fresh powder almost every single day is an experience not-to-be-missed. With more snowfall in one month than most world-class resorts get in an entire season, there really is little competition!

Niseko united, the powder capital of Japan, located on the northern island of Hokkaido, 2 ½ hours drive from Chitose Airport. Comprising four interlinked ski resorts; Grand Hirafu, Annupuri, Niseko Village, and Hanazono.

grand-hirafu

Niseko Grand Hirafu is the largest of all the resorts with a wide range of accommodation , restaurants, bars and snow sports services. Niseko Grand Hirafu is no doubt the best area for après-ski activities as restaurants, cafes, bars, and pubs are conveniently located only a short distance from accommodations and the ski lifts.

Lying back on cushions at low tables eating Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) or sitting at a lively Yakitori (grilled meat skewers) bar provides a unique Japanese après ski experience. Hokkaido, Japan benefits from particularly rich and diverse local produce and seafood, not to mention general Japanese precision and quality. Paired with superb dining and first class service, Niseko offers a range of Japanese and Western restaurants to satisfy all palettes.

The best thing about Japanese snow towns is the convenience of nearby onsen (hot-spring bath). Many skiers and snowboarders rank a visit to an onsen after riding the mountain all day as one of their most memorable experiences. The naturally soothing spring water and tranquil settings make for a perfect finale to a perfect day, offering welcome relief to tired muscles and joints. Each onsen is unique – the water can have a wide variety of mineral compositions based on its location and path from its source. The Japanese have many categories for the types of onsen and associate different health benefits with different types of water.

What do i need to bring.

We recommend you bring the following items;

  • Facemask & neck warmer -  We recommend that you wear or carry a facemask and neck warmer
  • Gloves -  Please choose warm and well-fitting gloves
  • Ski poles -  Poles with powder baskets are recommended
  • Skiwear -   We recommend guests bring an extra pair of inner layers as the temperature may change suddenly
  • Helmet - Helmets save lives. Helmets prevent injury when falling or crashing and even protect from wayward tree branches. We strongly recommend all guests wear helmets.
  • Goggles & sunglasses -  There will be no hike-up on our CAT tour so a pair of sunglasses is not necessary. It's recommended you bring along a spare set of goggles.
  • Action Camera -  You are more than welcome to bring these along with you. Share your powder day with friends and family!

All safety equipment is provided. Bags and/or backpacks with snacks, drinks, cameras etc can be kept in the snow CAT during the tour.

Do I need powder specific skis or snowboard?

We strongly recommend a powder ski/snowboard for Niseko Weiss Powder Cat Tour.

  • SKIERS:  An 80mm waist and over all-around ski is fine, but why not try a set of rocker skis? Rocker skis provide improved flotation on Niseko's deep powder, they turn quickly (handy when in trees) and stop swiftly.
  • SNOWBOARDERS:  We strongly recommended a powder board. You will struggle if your snowboard has a regular camber and freestyle stance setup.
  • NISEKO SPORTS EQUIPMENT RENTAL:  Talk to our friendly staff at  Niseko Sports for advice and more information on powder skis/snowboards. Niseko Sports has a wide variety of skis/snowboards, including BURTON, Ride, K2, Line, Rossignol, and Faction which all have a range of popular powder skis/snowboards. Niseko Sports offers the convenient option to switch your ski/snowboards, or even skis to snowboard or vice versa as many times as you like.

When is the best time for powder in Niseko?

Niseko's winter season runs from late November to Early May, the peak powder period is typically from late December through February, although this varies every season. An annual average 4-meter snow base ensures great Spring conditions from March onwards.

  • Start of Season:  The first snowfalls of the year in Niseko are usually in late October through to early November. As temperatures drop and storm cells intensify throughout November, the snow begins to fall to lower elevations, blanketing the entire mountain white with snow. As snowfalls increase, and a base is formed the upper part of the resort becomes skiable - the beginning of the ski season. Winter storms pushing out of Siberia become more frequent from early December, covering small bushes and Sasa grass, this is a surprisingly good time to visit Niseko; with relatively few skiers/riders you will find powder stashes almost everywhere within the resort boundary.
  • High Season:  Most backcountry gates open around the Christmas period. This time through to mid-February is the absolute best time of the season for light & dry powder. If you wish to ski/snowboard deep and dry powder like you see in magazines or DVDs, we assure you, this is the best time of year. Family visitors leave Niseko around mid-January and in their place, powder enthusiasts from all over the world flood into Niseko. This time of year, although snow quality is particularly good, the lifts can be frequently affected by the weather. When upper mountain areas are closed due to weather conditions, you still can enjoy Niseko's powder line riding lower lifts. After February, bottomless dry powder gradually changes to creamy, slightly heavier powder snow.
  • Spring Season:  The weather usually starts to become stable in March, offering good conditions for the backcountry, with more sunny days and better visibility, hiking up to the peak is a joy. In April, snowfall decreases but the snow base is still very high. Skiing / riding down through corn snow on a warm spring day is exceptional. Gates will close if there is a high risk of a slab avalanche.

What are the runs like?

You will be able to ski an average of 5-6 runs in one tour. The steepest run would be 30 degrees and an average would be 20 degrees. The maximum vertical descent is 450 meters.

Though the amount and quality of snow here is magnificent, the altitude is not high so there are no worries of thin air. The CAT base, where the tour would begin, is located 450 meters above sea level and the peak drop-off is 930 meters above sea level.

Hanazono Powder Guides or Niseko Weiss Powder Cats?

Hanazono Powder Guides is a faster-paced service designed for experienced skiers and snowboarders. However, a Hanazono Powder Guides Private Tour can be customized to accommodate beginner powder skiers or a group of people with different abilities.

What makes Niseko Weiss Powder CATS unique is that you don’t need to rush or worry about getting fresh tracks. The entire mountain is shared with a maximum of only 8 guests (plus our guides!). The terrain is not as challenging as what Hanazono Powder Guides can offer, so Weiss CAT Tours are suitable for intermediate powder skiers, or advanced guests who want an exclusive and relaxing adventure. Please check our  Off-Piste Ability Chart .

If you are a powder hound that just can’t get enough of Niseko's famous snow, you should request Hanazono Powder Guides' private tours. Enjoy exclusive early lift access at Hanazono after a big snowfall one day, and move into the backcountry to find more fresh snow the next day.

Terence, Hong Kong

Bottomless blower pow on every run was well worth it. Door to door service! NISS was extremely responsive and patient with all of my questions through the booking process.

Grace, United Kingdom

The Weiss CAT Tour terrain is tame, which was perfect for my husband an I. I really felt safe and improved my powder skiing so much in one day. We will definitely come back to Weiss during our next Niseko trip.

Gary, Australia

We joined Weiss on a beautiful sunny day with fresh snow from the night before. Perfect! The views are incredible as well, with Mt. Yotei and the Niseko resorts all visible at the top. A great experience being the only people on the whole mountain!
