Old world europe – rhine river cruises, siegfried's magical music machines, discovering siegfried's whimsical musical legacy in rüdesheim.

Housed in a centuries-old castle in the charming Rhine Valley wine town of Rüdesheim, Siegfried's Mechanisches Musikkabinett really must be seen – and heard – to be believed. It's the legacy of the late Siegfried Wendel, who founded his first museum dedicated to antique self-playing musical instruments in the 1970s. The current Musikkabinett in the 14th-century Brömserhof display's Siegfried's mesmerizing collection of mechanized musical clocks, player pianos, fairground organs, self-playing violins and many more... including the world's largest automated doll orchestra!

After several land tours with Tauck, this was our first on one of their riverboats. Even with our very high expectations, this trip exceeded them by a wide margin!

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a  passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Germany, France and Switzerland. You are not required to obtain a visa for the short duration of this cruise.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries we visit on this cruise to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage ― General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much stricter in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage ― General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or large items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small and is designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece and to carry only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not allow for access during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and inform us at time of booking.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally , no other vaccinations are currently required for travel to Germany, France or Switzerland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Info Center at 800-232-4636/800-CDC-INFO (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC Internet website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally ,  please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries we visit on this tour to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

While a cruise on the Rhine is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy all the cruise has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our visits to the Christmas markets, often along cobblestone streets, and at many sites there are multiple stairs or steps; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, and Sun. The elevator runs between the Diamond, Ruby and Emerald decks. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor on board. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate in December along the Rhine is seasonably cold. The average high and low temperatures are 42/33 °F (6/1 °C). The amount of precipitation is approximately 1.8 in (45.72 mm).

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa. gov, by clicking here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. A coat and sweater for the sun deck and touring is also recommended. Pack comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps. For the welcome and farewell dinners, you may wish to dress more formally – jacket and tie for men, casually elegant attire for ladies (not required).

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each cabin on board the riverboat.

The riverboat provides limited valet laundry services but no dry cleaning. Valet laundry service is available on the riverboat for a fee. Ironing facilities are available by request to the front desk. Category 7 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We recommend you pack the following items for your cruise on the Rhine:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for onboard
  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in for onshore
  • Short and long-sleeved cotton shirts
  • Slacks and jeans
  • Medium-weight socks
  • Medium-weight sweater
  • Winter coat
  • Raincoat and rain hat
  • Lightweight gloves
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Sun protection
  • Camera, lenses, batteries and plenty of film and/or memory cards
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Travel clock with alarm
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your cabin while traveling

EMBARK IN COLOGNE

Arrive in Cologne, where your five-star floating hotel is moored in the picturesque historic center. The city will look quite magnificent at this very special time of year, with fairy lights twinkling along the harbourside and the monumental Christmas tree standing proudly against a historic backdrop.

The dedicated English-speaking crew will welcome you aboard your first-class floating hotel, ensuring you settle into your luxurious, well-equipped cabin and familiarise yourself with the ship. Marvel at the elegant décor at every turn: lush garlands, baubles in jewelled tones and a grandiose Christmas tree.

Cologne

To really get in the Christmas mood, nothing beats waking up on board to find you’re already cruising through an entrancing winter wonderland. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning and relax while a kaleidoscope of riverside views drifts by in all their seasonal glory.

The festive period is a magical time to visit this picturesque part of Germany, and no country does it better. The historic Yuletide markets here are the ideal places to soak up the spellbinding atmosphere while seeking out unusual presents for friends and family back home. After lunch on board we arrive in the historic city of Koblenz. Strategically situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Moselle, this 2,000-year-old city with its mighty fortress towering above, is full of appeal. Forest-covered hillsides dominate the skyline, whilst the lower slopes are strewn with the pretty, half-timbered buildings so typical of the Rhineland. Koblenz is also known for the Deutches Eck, translating as German Corner, a point between the Rhine and Moselle with a spectacular view.  Enjoy a guided tour, seeing the principal monuments, discovering ancient squares, admiring beautifully restored historic house frontages and quaint hidden passageways.

Located in the atmospheric old town, Koblenz’s Christmas market is one of the largest in the Rhineland. As you browse its enticing stalls, the aroma of hot chestnuts and mouth-watering sausages fills the air; don’t forget to pay a visit to the Christmas bakery, making the famous Stollen – the delicious bread made with candied and dried fruit, nuts and marzipan, traditionally eaten at this time of year. As the Christmas lights glow brighter in the cool evening air, it’s time to head back to the inviting warmth of the ship’s lounge for welcome cocktails and canapés before a delicious dinner and a festive folklore show.

Koblenz

During breakfast the ship effortlessly glides out of port as we commence a spectacular morning’s cruising, sailing upstream. One of the cruise highlights will be our passage through the magnificent Rhine Gorge; here where the swifter current sweeps between the narrowing valley sides that tower above, the river twists and turns towards the famous Loreley Rock, where legend has it, unsuspecting sailors were lured to their deaths by enchanting maidens.

After lunch on board we arrive in Rüdesheim. If you imagine a typical Rhine town, then this would be it. Narrow crooked streets lead down to the sweeping river, providing the perfect chocolate box setting for its Christmas market.* As you wander the myriad stalls, glistening in the glow of hundreds of fairy lights, stop perhaps for a slice of gingerbread or a warming Rüdesheim coffee with its fortifying shot of locally distilled Asbach brandy and a dollop of whipped cream. And don’t forget to pay a visit to the Christmas shop: it’s a treasure trove of all things seasonal, from tree decorations and music boxes to wooden nutcrackers and handcrafted figurines. Rüdesheim also has many atmospheric Weinstuben where you can sample local wines produced from the surrounding vineyards.

As the evening light fades, amble back on board to enjoy a sumptuous dinner in the ship’s excellent restaurant.

*Due to event cancellation, Rüdesheim Christmas Market is unavailable for 2021 departures.

Rüdesheim

SPEYER ON CHRISTMAS EVE

Unwind after breakfast this morning as the ship gently cruises to Speyer. As you lounge back and enjoy a relaxing Christmas Eve, the landscape becomes much wider and flatter, with gently rolling hills and vineyards that are home to the Liebfraumilch wines. Take to the deck and enjoy the bracing as we continue our Christmas journey upstream. We berth in historic Speyer, founded by the Celts and one of Germany’s oldest cities, celebrated for its illustrious past, for an afternoon walking tour. The breathtaking Imperial Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is among the largest Romanesque churches in the world; it’s also one of the finest. Its beautiful four-roomed crypt is the resting place of many Holy Roman emperors and German kings.

Another landmark is the magnificent neo-Gothic Gedächtniskirche, built at the turn of the 20th-century to commemorate the 1529 ‘Protestation at Speyer’, a significant event when a group of Martin Luther’s followers protested against his imperial ban – henceforth Luther’s religious followers were known as ‘Protestants’. Speyer’s delightful Christmas market is held on the bustling Maximilanstrasse, in front of the Old Mint. The alluring aromas of hot Glühwein and roasted almonds fill the air and local choirs and music groups provide a festive programme. There’s free time to explore the numerous stalls decorated with twinkling lights before stepping back on board for another splendid dinner.

Speyer Cathedral, Germany

STRASBOURG ON CHRISTMAS DAY

This morning we cruise gently upstream, passing through two spectacular locks, whose elaborate engineering never ceases to fascinate. After breakfast why not find a comfortable chair in the lounge and enjoy a relaxing morning –  the perfect start to Christmas Day. For this special day, we’re on our way to Strasbourg, hailed the capital of Christmas. You are sure to be captivated by the unique atmosphere of this captivating French city at Christmas time – its centre a mosaic of winding alleys and lanes lined with quirkily crooked, half-timbered houses largely unchanged since the 14th century. During its history, Strasbourg has been both German and French, and you see the influences of both in its language, cuisine and appearance, creating a truly individual ambience. With Strasbourg locals spending time with loved ones today, the markets, shops, cafés and attractions may not be open. Take this time to appreciate this spellbinding capital of the Alsace region and its wonderful architecture in the gentle calm of Christmas Day.

This afternoon we experience a walking tour with a local guide leading us to its enchanting centre – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the stunning Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, with a range of architectural inspiration from 12th-century Romanesque to 15th-century Late Gothic. Other unforgettable sights include the colourful Alsatian-style Maison Kammerzell, multi-towered Ponts Couverts – covered bridges – and the pretty Petite France quarter of pastel-coloured former artisans’ houses lining the canals, now looking merry and bright for the season. In the heart of Place Kleber you’ll find The Great Christmas Tree, the seasonal symbol of Strasbourg. Back on board this evening there’s a truly memorable occasion – the Christmas Day gala dinner which will be followed by a live festive musical performance.

Strasbourg

After a relaxing Boxing Day breakfast, wrap up in your winter warmers and head to the sun deck or relax in the lounge and soak up the atmosphere of this magical river as we cruise downstream. We have another delicious lunch on board before we reach Boppard, a gorgeous town on a dramatic, almost U-shaped river bend. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’, the town is renowned for its storybook medieval atmosphere of captivating cobbled streets lined by tucked-away shops, traditional houses and characterful restaurants. Like many riverside settlements in the area, the Romans founded Boppard and their legacy remains in the superbly preserved town walls the finest in Germany. This delightful medieval setting provides a picturesque backdrop for a crisp but cosy December day, with the bewitching lights bedecking the half-timbered buildings.

This afternoon we’ll enjoy a guided tour lead by one of our local experts, with highlights including the beautiful white stone St. Severus and Carmelite churches, the marketplace with the ruins of the fortress and the old town with its charming winding alleys and ancient houses. This evening you can wander along the town’s attractive Rheinallee promenade and look out to the glittering lights across the river before thoughts turn to tonight’s menu, prepared by the ship’s chef and served to your delight in the restaurant.

Boppard

This morning enjoy more glorious views of dramatic, rocky vineyard-topped valley sides dotted with romantic ruined castles. What better way to spend your last morning on board than on deck or in the welcoming lounge as we progress majestically downstream. As the towering spires of Cologne’s cathedral come into view on the wintry skyline, we moor in the shadow of this ancient monument once again. Christmas creates a special atmosphere here and this afternoon you can discover this fascinating city on our tour led by a local guide who’ll help you get the most out of your visit, which of course takes in the twin-spired cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, miraculous survivor of Second World War bombing and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took six centuries to complete, and among its many treasures are the magnificent stained glass windows and gilded sarcophagus said to contain the remains of the three kings from the Nativity story. This majestic building provides a superb setting for the huge Christmas tree which stands proudly in Cathedral Square. We also see the vibrant old town, beautifully restored and boasting an abundance of excellent shopping and cosy bars, some of which still brew their own beer.

As night falls, a sumptuous dinner is followed by an on-board classical music concert - the perfect finale to this memorable Christmas cruise through the romantic River Rhine.

River cruise

Visit europe’s prettiest christmas markets as you sail the rhine.

There's almost nothing more festive than a traditional Christmas market, with sparkling fairy lights, pretty wooden stall chalets sprinkled with snow, and the heavenly scent of mulled wine, roast almonds and spiced cider filling the air.

This special Christmas-time cruise will take you to several of Germany's prettiest winter markets and will have you feeling festive in no time.

You'll begin your cruise in Cologne, where you'll have time to get to know this famous cathedral city. From Cologne you'll sail along the Rhine Valley. Your first stop is Rüdesheim, the centre of Rhine Romanticism, which once inspired poets and composers such as Brahms, who composed his 3rd symphony here.

Mainz is one of the oldest cities in Germany, and you'll visit its historic Christmas market on the Domplatz, set against a backdrop of the illuminated Mainz Cathedral.

You'll visit the centre of Frankfurt, where its towering Christmas tree shows it can compete with its neighbours when it comes to seasonal spirit. Pick up gifts and treats at its picturesque market like Bethmännchen, a marzipan pastry with almonds and Glühwein.

Koblenz is your next stop. This city is considered to have one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany, and is one of the largest in the Rhineland.

You'll be sailing on the beautifully-appointed A-ROSA Aqua, where you'll have everything you need for a luxurious trip included. There's a sauna, fitness area, and whirlpool, extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, a range of drinks.

You'll start your Christmas cruise on the Rhine today, boarding your premium all-inclusive A-ROSA ship. You'll be boarding your ship in Cologne, where you can spend some time getting to know this enchanting cathedral city with its many elegant buildings and historical attractions.

You might choose to arrive one day before your cruise so that you'll have time to see all the sights, or extend your stay at the end of the trip.

Today you will visit Rüdesheim, the centre of Rhine Romanticism, which once inspired poets and musicians, including Brahms.

From a cultural point of view, the most famous place in the Rheingau has a lot to offer, including historic aristocratic estates and fortifications. Rüdesheim is also known for its winemaking, especially of aromatic Riesling wines. You may also want to stop off in one of the town's cafes to sip some delicious speciality Rüdesheimer Kaffee, an alcoholic coffee-based drink made with brandy and plenty of sugar.

You'll also visit Mainz today, a city with 2,000 years of history, making it one of the oldest cities in Germany. Traditions are fully celebrated at Christmastime at the historic Christmas market on the Domplatz, where you'll also spot the illuminated Mainz Cathedral.

Although Frankfurt is possibly better known for its business activity, it proves that it can do Christmas as well as with its tall, sparkling Christmas tree.

Between Römerberg and the historic Paulskirche down to the banks of the Main, one of the most beautiful and oldest Christmas markets in Germany takes place every winter.

There's plenty of opportunity to sample local delicacies here, with regional products such as Bethmännchen, a marzipan pastry with almonds, or hot apple wine being particularly popular.

Today you'll sail along the Middle Rhine Valley from Frankfurt to lovely Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. This stretch of the river is the true centre of Rhine Romanticism, with vine-clad slopes, palaces and castles scattered across hills, and villages nestled along the riverbanks. It is clear why this area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

On arrival in Koblenz you'll get to see why this city's Christmas market is considered one of the most beautiful on the Rhine. On Jesuitenplatz you'll find what is possibly the world's largest Advent calendar, made up of the colourfully-lit windows of the baroque town hall.

Your Christmas cruise comes to an end today as your ship docks once again in Cologne. You might wish to extend your trip to see more of this beautiful city before heading home full of the Christmas spirit.

Rhine Christmas Markets

rhine cruise christmas

Highlights of the Rhine River Cruise

A cruise that’s as festive as any sleigh ride..

From Cologne to Rüdesheim, Mainz, Frankfurt and Koblenz to Cologne.

Magical Christmas markets huddle together in narrow timber-framed streets. Rüdesheim is in the Christmas mood. Celebrate with a glass of punch! Or perhaps with one of the world-famous local wines? Frankfurt’s towering Christmas tree proves that the city is as good at Christmas as it is at finance. One of Germany’s prettiest Christmas markets takes place every winter between the old Römerberg area and the historical St. Paul’s Church. The market and the rest of the city are overflowing with Christmas gift ideas for loved ones. And for yourself. Mainz’s Nikolose Market has a history stretching back more than 200 years. Today you can enjoy a mulled wine and Christmas baking in the market square in front of the mighty cathedral. As you do so, admire the lights twinkling around the colourful Renaissance façades of the historical buildings surrounding the market. The panorama of the Middle Rhine Valley – which, with its enchanting valleys and mountains dotted with knight’s castles, itself calls for a celebration – will accompany you onwards to Koblenz. Wrap up with a scarf and hat, and head out onto the ice! Experience the aroma of sugared almonds as you skate around the romantic rink in this old Roman city, with Christmas music accompanying the clip-clop of picturesque horse-drawn carriages. More Christmassy even than in Santa's grotto.

Arrive on your own - and park safely!

If you plan your arrival individually, we offer you a parking space in a guarded car park for the length of your cruise.

Christmas market river cruises: What to expect on a holiday sailing

S ailing down one of Europe's stunning rivers is a dream trip no matter the time of year, but at Christmas time it's even more special. Ships take travelers from port to port to experience the incredible Christmas markets where stalls are adorned with glittering lights, the smells of sausages and baked goods fill the air, and the sounds of carols can be heard.

Starting in late November through Christmas every year, the cities and towns along the Danube, Rhine, Seine and other rivers set up markets that display each region's holiday traditions. Many of the most popular river cruise lines with ships based in Europe schedule festive cruises to take travelers to shop and dine at these seasonal markets.

If you're thinking about booking a Christmas market river cruise but don't know where to start, we've got you covered. Here, we've answered the most popular questions about Christmas market river cruises and shared our top tips and tricks to get the most out of the trip.

Is a Christmas market river cruise worth it?

The number-one question people asked me in person and online after I did a Christmas market river cruise down the Danube with Viking in December 2023 was: Is the trip worth it? I vote yes, but there are some things you should know before booking a Christmas market cruise.

If you've had visiting the Christmas markets of Europe on your bucket list, a river cruise is a great way to explore multiple markets in one trip. One of the biggest perks of a river cruise versus a land-based trip is that you unpack once, and your accommodations and dining options float with you down the river from town to town.

Additionally, the cruise director on board acted more like a personal concierge for guests who had questions, giving suggestions for things to do, places to eat and what each Christmas market was known for.

On my seven-night river cruise, I visited six ports and enjoyed a half day of scenic sailing through the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our ports of call were Budapest; Bratislava, Slovakia; Vienna; Krems, Austria; Linz, Austria; and Passau, Germany. Each port had at least one Christmas market.

I was most impressed by Vienna, which had two, but the one near City Hall is the one that makes most of the viral TikTok videos and Instagram reels. The City Hall Christmas market is the larger of the two in the city center and is more photogenic. But be sure to go to both Christmas markets in the city. They are about a 10-minute walk from each other and have different foods to try and souvenirs to buy.

Which rivers are the best for a Christmas markets cruise?

Picking a river for your cruise can be a challenge, especially if you're not familiar with the destinations on the itinerary. Cruises on the Danube and Rhine are the most popular at this time of year because their ports of call are where most of our Christmas traditions were first created.

On the Danube, you can visit destinations like Vienna, Austria and Passau and Regensburg, Germany. Alternatively, on the Rhine, destinations of interest include Amsterdam; Cologne, Germany; Mannheim, Germany; and Strasbourg, France.

After you find a few river cruises that fit your travel dates, dig into each destination and what it has to offer. Christmas markets are open from midmorning until between 8 and 10 p.m., but there's not enough to do at each market to fill that entire time. I usually spent about an hour at the smaller markets in places like Passau and Linz and about two to three hours at the larger markets in Vienna and Budapest. In each port, you'll want to be sure there are more activities and attractions to fill the rest of your time in port.

Which river cruise line is best for a Christmas cruise?

Cruise lines that offer Christmas market cruises include Viking , Avalon Waterways, AmaWaterways , CroisiEurope, Uniworld and Tauck.

Uniworld cruises are the most expensive, with prices ranging from $3,399 to $7,199 for 8- to 11-day sailings throughout the season. Tauck is also pricier than its competitors, but it's one of the few options that has a family cruise option.

Avalon Waterways offers a more affordable way to see the Christmas markets, with cruises starting at $2,167 for six days of traveling from Budapest to Vienna. But be warned, some cruises do sell out almost a year in advance. CroisiEurope cruises are also more affordable and offer closed-loop cruises where you start and end in the same destination, which is not something that most other river cruise lines offer for Christmas market cruises.

If you're looking for a more active cruise, consider AmaWaterways, where bikes are always available to use in port. On the Danube Christmas Markets tour, you can bike from Weissenkirchen to Melk, passing picturesque villages and vineyards.

Viking is known to be slower-paced than its competitors, with a relaxed vibe. Guest won't have as many choices of activities off or on the ship. The included tours are mostly walking tours.

How do I get a good deal on a Christmas market cruise?

Because of the short season for Christmas market river cruises, getting a deal can prove to be a challenge. The best way to get a deal is to book early.

It's common for people to book a Christmas market cruise a year or more in advance. Some companies will offer a discounted deposit for those who book early, and others will offer monetary savings for booking well in advance. Look for wave season (January through March) or Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday deals for river cruise discounts or other promotional offers.

Do Christmas cruises sell out?

Yes, Christmas cruises can and do sell out. Most riverboats only hold 100 to 200 passengers. The best way to ensure you get the type of cabin and sailing date that you want is to book early.

The more desirable balcony and suite rooms often sell out first, followed by rooms with only upper windows. Cruises that take place in the middle of the season, meaning the first two to three weeks of December, are often more popular than the last week of November or the week of Christmas since some markets might not be open at those times.

How cold is Europe in winter?

The weather is, of course, determined by when and where you're going. Middle and Eastern Europe is often colder than Western Europe, the latter of which has a milder winter season. The later in the Christmas market season you travel, the more likely you are to get rain or snow since winter is setting in across the continent.

On my Viking river cruise from Budapest to Passau in Eastern Europe, the winter weather varied from days with cold rain where I needed to bundle up with extra waterproof layers, to beautiful sunny days where I could strip off my winter jacket for a few hours while touring the Christmas markets.

I used the weather app on my phone to help me determine what to pack. Even 10 days out from my trip, the app was fairly accurate with what the temperatures would be, which ranged from the 20s to the high 40s, and what the day would look like.

What should I wear on my river cruise?

Packing for a river cruise in the middle of winter was the most challenging part of the trip for me. Not only did I have to buy winter clothes since I live in Florida, but I needed to make sure I brought enough layers to keep me warm.

For days exploring the ports, I wore jeans and waterproof boots with long cozy socks, plus a thermal long-sleeved shirt under a sweater. I also brought a midweight puffy winter jacket to wear off the ship. Accessories like a warm hat or ear warmers, gloves and a scarf were also helpful.

Depending on the river cruise line you book, the onboard attire may range from casual to a little more fancy. During the day on Viking, many people wore jeans or sweatpants and a casual shirt. Evenings brought out the more elevated fashion; women donned cute sweaters and dresses, while men dressed in jeans and nicer tops or sweaters.

If you can, I suggest bringing at least two pairs of outdoor shoes in case your waterproof shoes can't handle the snow or a few days of rain in a row. I brought a pair of fleece-lined Crocs to wear off the ship in a few ports where the weather was warmer with no precipitation.

When should I arrive at the embarkation port?

Always try to arrive at least a day early for any river cruise, especially if you're flying overseas. For some river cruises, the embarkation port is just that, a place to get on the ship and leave. If you arrive the day your cruise begins, you could miss out on exploring the city.

Even if your Christmas market river cruise does have an overnight stay in the embarkation city with tours the next day, it's still best to arrive a day early. Travel days from the United States to Europe can be unpredictable, with delays and missed connections, so you should give yourself plenty of time to get to the ship so you don't miss it.

Some river cruise lines offer pre-cruise extensions that you can bundle with the cruise booking and allow you to arrive early at the embarkation port. These extensions include a hotel stay, and some include a few meals and a guided tour, plus transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the ship.

Are the markets all the same?

Every Christmas market is different in the overall vibe and what it has to offer for visitors. Do some research before you leave home to see what the highlight of each Christmas market is. I did a lot of my research on TikTok and Instagram so I could see what the person was talking about.

In Budapest, the Christmas market in the square in front of St. Stephen's Basilica was a good mix of crafts, decorations and tasty food to try. On the other hand, the Christmas market in Bratislava was more of a food market with just a few stalls for buying goodies to bring home with you.

My favorite Christmas market was the one at City Hall in Vienna, which happens to be one of the most popular in Europe. It had everything from ice skating and photo-worthy backdrops to prepackaged sweets and plenty of Christmas decorations to try to fit into my already full suitcase.

What are the best things to buy at European Christmas markets?

Popular things to buy at Christmas markets throughout Europe include nativity scenes, handmade toys, nutcrackers, candles and glass or wood ornaments. If something catches your eye, buy it; there's no guarantee you'll find a similar item at the next market.

For example, in Vienna, I spotted a gold beaded ornament that I loved, and I bought it for about 10 euros (about $10.86). I never saw any other beaded ornaments at the Christmas markets before or after Vienna, so I was glad I purchased it when I saw it.

Do make sure that you're buying local products. On my Viking cruise, we were told that some markets are starting to sell mass-produced goods from China. If you want to support local artisans, ask the vendor or look for stickers that say where the products were made.

What should I eat or drink at each market?

Eating and drinking is a key component of the Christmas market experience. Each market sells an abundance of food, and the food options change from town to town.

Before you cruise, make a list of regional foods you wish to try in each market. Once at the market, look around to see which food stands are popular with locals. Follow their lead because they likely know who has the best treats.

Here are my favorite sweet and savory treats from each Christmas market I visited on my Viking cruise.

  • Budapest: chimney cake rolled in crushed hazelnuts
  • Bratislava: pork and garlic spiral sausage, potato pancakes similar to latkes but the size of a dinner plate
  • Vienna: Champagne cream-filled donut
  • Linz: raclette cheese on toasted bread
  • Passau: cheese, ham and onion sengzelten (a sort of flatbread with toppings), traditional German bratwurst

Drinking at Christmas markets around Europe normally means getting a hot glass of glühwein, which is mulled wine made with red wine, spices and fruit. The drink is normally served in cute mugs that you can keep as a fun and cheap souvenir. If you don't want to keep your mug, you can return it and get back a euro or two.

What else can I do in each market besides shop?

Each Christmas market is different, and the things to do besides shopping are also varied.

Most of the larger markets, like the ones in Bratislava and Budapest, have live music playing from a bandstand that you can enjoy. In Budapest, the market near St. Stephen's Basilica had a projection show on the exterior of the church, too.

While touring one of the Linz markets, I stumbled upon a small carnival where rides and games were set up for kids to enjoy. Then in Vienna, the City Hall Christmas market had an ice skating rink that was popular with families and couples.

Related: Are river cruises right for kids?

What times do the markets open and close?

Generally, the Christmas markets open in midmorning, anywhere from 9 to 10 a.m., and close between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Some markets will open earlier, and some will close later.

The best way to know the times of each market you're visiting is to do a quick internet search close to the time of your river cruise. Put the name of the city and the words "Christmas Market hours" into your preferred online search tool to get the operational hours for each market.

Do you need cash for the Christmas markets?

You should always carry some cash with you for the Christmas markets. While many of the vendors will take credit cards or Apple Pay, others only want cash.

It's also a good idea to know the currency of each destination you're going to. For example, in Hungary, euros are not accepted anywhere, so I exchanged dollars for Hungarian forints to use at the Christmas market.

What can I do in each city before or after the Christmas market?

Your river cruise will offer an included tour every day. On my Viking river cruise, each day's included tour was a walking tour of the city to point out historic landmarks and show people how to get to the Christmas markets.

After a few days, I found the walking tours somewhat repetitive. They all showed off the major church in the city center and described how the city navigated various wars. The guides make or break the tours, and you never know who you'll get. So I used the tours to help navigate to the city center, then ventured off on my own with my travel companion. We used walking directions on Google Maps as a way to get to destinations we were interested in and to get back to the ship once we were ready to warm up for a while.

River cruises include a lot of perks, including docking right at the edge of most of the towns you visit. This means that in many destinations, you can walk from the ship to the middle of town in mere minutes. Before or after visiting the Christmas market, you can spend your time exploring the city, dining in a local restaurant, sipping hot coffee in a cafe or popping into shops.

For larger destinations like Vienna, Paris or Amsterdam, you might want to do extra research on what there is to do in the city for free or at a discount. Many museums offer free or discounted entry on select days or to select ages.

Bottom line

If you've ever wanted to explore European Christmas markets, a river cruise is an easy way to do it. Many of the best river cruise brands and guided group tour companies offer Christmas markets river cruises throughout Europe.

You'll make the most of your vacation if you do a little bit of research to determine what there is to do in each city before or after your market visit, which local foods you should try and what to shop for at the markets themselves.

No matter which river you traverse, cruise line you pick, or Christmas markets you visit, you'll be able to immerse yourself in European holiday culture, learning about the food and drink specialties of the places you visit and how each destination celebrates the holidays. And since you're on a river cruise, you can experience multiple cities and countries while someone else does the navigation for you, and you only have to unpack once.

I Planned a River Cruise With 48 of My Closest Friends and Family — Here’s How You Can, Too

Here's how I pulled off the trip of a lifetime.

rhine cruise christmas

emicristea/Travel + Leisure

There’s nothing my husband and I love more than traveling, but doing so with family and friends — especially if they’re hesitant travelers or we’re walking them through their first trip to Europe — makes it all the more meaningful for us.

So, as we looked ahead to December 2023 — we'd both be turning 30 and nearing 10 years married — we began to brainstorm epic ways to celebrate.

We thought back to one of our most treasured travel experiences — our first river cruise — on the (unfortunately) now-defunct U River Cruises, and knew this was the perfect way to get as many of our loved ones as possible on board for a week-long adventure in Europe (with minimal logistical headaches and day-to-day planning required on our part).

Skye Sherman/Travel + Leisure

Sure, I’m a travel writer, but I make no claims as a group trip specialist, and a river cruise has daily itineraries, plus meals, excursions, and fun programming built in. With a mostly U.S.-based group, we knew Europe was the right destination, too: Access is easy, we’ve been many times, and it’s a comfortable first major trip abroad for even the most timid travelers.

As we began to plan Aaron and Skye’s Epic 30th Birthday Bash River Cruise Extravaganza, I scoured CruiseMapper and reviewed charter and group booking options from Emerald Cruises, Lüftner, Avalon Waterways, Uniworld, Tauck, Viking, Amadeus, and more; I compared costs, dates, itineraries, availability, and occupancy of various ships, routes, and companies.

After much deliberation, we went with AmaWaterways , which turned out to be first in the long line of things that went right.

The Details

AmaWaterways, a family-owned river cruise company with European roots, offered a part-charter option on its newest ship at the best price and at the most convenient time: the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

roevin/Getty Images

We spent Dec. 28, 2023, through Jan. 4, 2024 aboard the AmaSiena , sailing the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland, to Amsterdam, Netherlands (one of our all-time favorite cities, an added bonus), on an itinerary known as the Enchanting Rhine .

The Difference Between a Full Charter, Part Charter, and Group Booking

With AmaWaterways, a part charter is similar to a group booking, but you’re obligated to a minimum. Once you sign, you “own” that number of cabins and are responsible for filling them, but can switch names and even cabin types (depending on availability) throughout the process, if needed. The public can also book cabins on a partly chartered ship.

A full charter means reserving the entire ship for your group’s private use; this is more expensive, unless you have a group big enough to fill every cabin and can divide the costs accordingly.

We went with a part-charter option for 10 cabins initially, but ended up with 28 filled. All the bookings had to go through me — a welcome excuse to let my extreme attention to detail be put to good use.

We chose our cruise because the time frame, while a busy period to travel, is also when most people are already off work (or have a lighter-than-usual load). Plus, we’d get to ring in a new year together, and a holiday or special occasion makes a trip like this even easier to justify. Our priority was making the trip as accessible as possible to as many of our loved ones as possible.

Another perk? This route comfortably hit four countries (Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands) in a week, checking off lots of countries for everyone.

All 48 members of our crew had as epic of a time as we did — we’re already discussing the second installment of what will perhaps become an annual tradition — and while our group consisted of relatives and friends both old and new, by the end, we all felt like family.

Having almost everyone I love sleeping within 100 feet of me for a week, walking off the ship each morning to explore new countries together, celebrating a massive joint birthday party, watching cousins mingle with best friends mingle with family friends mingle with work partners, seeing New Year’s Eve fireworks erupt in a 360-degree panorama from the ship’s top deck, and partying until the sun rose on New Year’s day — a life highlight, indeed.

How to Plan Your Own River Cruise Group Trip

Want to recreate this memorable adventure in your own way? Below are some tips for helping your trip go off without a hitch.

Don’t poll.

Yes, I said it: Don’t ask for opinions. Everyone’s going to have a different perspective and you’ll overwhelm yourself trying to cater to them all. There’s no way you can please everyone with the perfect itinerary and dates, so do your best to put forth a reasonable plan, get buy-in from a few MVPs, and let go of the rest.

Create a website.

Unless you want to continually email or text the same information again and again, collect all the relevant links, plans, details, and thoughts in one easy-to-reference receptacle, like a website. Think of it as a wedding website, but for your group trip. Websites are easy to create with Wix, and you can include pages with travel tips, flight recommendations, packing advice , checklists, timelines, and more. You can also use Wix to send email newsletters when you need to blast information to everyone.

Organize, organize, organize.

When it comes to your role as acting-travel-agent-in-chief, Google Drive is your friend. I created a meticulously organized Google Drive, where I tracked everything in documents, sheets, and more, and used Google Forms for further planning.

Check your passport.

You know what’s not fun? Being on the hook for a traveler who can’t find their passport or neglected to check its expiration date .

As guests commit and book, have them send you their passport expiration date so that they locate their passport with plenty of time before the trip and you can ensure it’s still valid. Remember, some countries require six months of validity on a passport.

Encourage early arrivals.

Flying in before your adventure officially begins is a good way to spend extra quality time together, get the mingling started, and ward off any potential travel snafus and delays. You can count on something going wrong with this many moving parts, but by cushioning the beginning of your trip in case of emergency, you’ll get peace of mind and some padding where it counts.

As the hosts, we arrived in Europe eight days before embarking on our river cruise, opting for a brief stay in Zürich followed by a snowboarding trip in Zermatt to celebrate Christmas and my husband’s birthday. We then took the train to Basel (as a group of seven, after convincing friends to join!).

Create a group chat.

As your adventure nears, a group chat is a great way to get everyone on the same page, make announcements, and begin intros. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Slack are all good options. Just be prepared for the conversation to continue long after the trip — the love is still going strong in ours.

River Cruise Review: Christmas on the Rhine

New to river cruising, mother of four Jennifer V. shares her unique perspective on why our Christmas Markets on the Rhine sailing was perfect for her brood.

We call ourselves the “Sanchez Six”: there’s me, Jennifer, and my husband Hector; Diego (18); Mateo (17); Joaquin (13); and my youngest, Sofia (12). We are relatively new to the cruising world. We went from our first-ever ocean cruise to a river cruise in December 2021 – with the best of the best! We feel very spoiled now. I mean, could we ever not sail with AmaWaterways? We want to go back on a river cruise immediately. In fact, we have already made a deposit!

Like Our Own Private Yacht

We didn’t know what to expect when we first arrived at the ship for embarkation in Basel, Switzerland, but it was perfect. Hector, the kids and I were absolutely blown away by the gorgeous AmaLucia . The ship was just beautiful and pristine. All the crew were waiting there smiling at us, making us feel so special, like AmaLucia was our own private yacht. When we opened the doors to our staterooms, our mouths fell to the floor. They were so spacious! All three of our staterooms lined up in a row and two of them were connecting. It was nice to have flexible sleeping arrangements. If you’re traveling with your family, I highly recommend connecting staterooms.

Celebrating Christmas On Board

We had planned our river cruise during Christmas, but we didn’t even miss celebrating at home because AmaLucia was completely decked out with wreaths, ornaments, and lights and there were at least four Christmas trees on board. We participated in the German tradition of looking for the Christmas pickle, which was a big highlight for my kids – and I ended up finding it! Our gift to the kids this year was the river cruise, but we did take advantage of the ship’s tradition of everyone putting their slippers out to sneak some trinkets into theirs. It was so fun; we may even start doing this at home!

Food Like Artwork and Personalized Service

Fortunately, our kids are very adventurous eaters and enjoyed the specials on board each night, but it was nice that there was always an alternative available, like burgers or pizza. Our youngest, Sofia, is gluten-free and the pastry chef always prepared an equivalent dessert to what was on the menu just for her. At every meal she had her own basket of gluten-free bread or toast, and she loved her gluten-free waffles at breakfast. We didn’t have to remind our waiter every day, and he knew what drinks we would order and brought us our favorite tabasco sauce before we had to ask. It all made our kids feel so taken care of. And every dish was like a piece of artwork. I took so many photographs!

Excursions For All Ages

During the river cruise, we took most of our excursions as a family, although Hector and my older boys did enjoy a biking excursion one day. Sofia and Joaquin loved listening to our guides through the microphone on their Quietvox headsets. They had never experienced anything like that before and felt very official wearing them! It was also really nice that the tours had built-in free time so that we could do some things just for our kids. Europe is so family-friendly; we always felt the kids were welcome – especially at the Christmas Markets, which are designed for families.

Our Favorite Markets and Memories

Just before Christmas, we happened to be in Strasbourg, the birthplace of the Christmas tree, home of the oldest Christmas Market in Europe and the incredible Strasbourg Cathedral. We also had free time to go have a meal at a restaurant there, so we enjoyed some escargot. All four of the kids remembered this city as their favorite but Sofia also really liked Riquewihr, France, because it looks so much like the town from Beauty and the Beast .

At the Christmas Markets, my older boys, Diego and Mateo, were obsessed with trying the sausages, “pasta in a cone” and all the desserts. We collected glühwein mugs from every city and bought some keepsakes for the kids, including a cherished amulet for Sofia.

On board the ship, our family played a lot of board games in the lounge and danced to the live music each evening. We also spent some quiet time together in the stateroom watching Christmas movies. The gift of traveling with your family is that you don’t have constant distractions or activities to run to – you can just spend more time being together.

Watching My Kids Mature Before My Eyes

One of the things I loved the most about this river cruise was that we could practice independence with our kids. My older boys managed their own key cards and were responsible for getting themselves to meals on their own. My younger kids were also able to maneuver the ship and could go back and forth to the room to grab things they left in the room as needed. They were really proud of themselves. And we felt so safe because the crew were looking out for them. AmaWaterways truly is one big family.
