When to Go and What to Do in Myanmar

Mahamuni Pagoda Festival

Concentrated around the Mahamuni pagoda in Mandalay, this is a large yearly temple festival very similar to the Ananda Festival in Bagan, although it’s more modern. Try the antique Ferry-wheel or the merry-go-round and buy the latest pop music CDs at the market. A traditional “chin lone” (cane football) competition is held during this festival, attracting teams from all over the country. If you happen to be in Mandalay during the festival, it’s worth visiting.

Shittaung Pagoda Festival

The Rakhine dynasty, based in Mrauk U, reached its peak during the 15th century. In those days, Mrauk U was a busy trading port that was frequently visited by Dutch, Portuguese, Middle Eastern, and Asian traders. Mrauk U was once called one of the wealthiest cities in Asia, comparable to Amsterdam or London. What’s left at it today is a historical site with 700 temples built in a very different style from the Bagan temples (they look like forts at first sight). The fortress temples were built after an attack from the Portuguese during the reign of King Minbin (1513 – 1553). According to legend, the pagodas have been built by thousands of architects and workmen for a year. The Shittaung Pillar in the northern entrance of the pagoda has been brought in from Vesali in India. During the festival, you will have a chance to see daily boat racing competitions and Rakhine traditional wrestling along with the Rakhine traditional oil lamp dance.

Waso Chinlone Festival

Waso Chinlone Festival is a tribute to an ancient royal sports game called Cane Ball. It has been held in Mahamuni Pagoda in Mandalay every year since 1926. It is one of the largest sports events with 1220 Chinlone teams competing, stretched one 48 days of competition. Players from all over the country gather at this event to pay homage to the most revered Shrine and convene in tribute for a game of Chinlone. The game is quite similar to football, but the players have to keep the ball off the ground. The Chinlone contest is played with live music from Myanmar saing-waing (traditional orchestra) and a running commentary.

Mount Popa Nat Festival

Mount Popa is home to the nats (spirits) in Myanmar, where the spirit statues are displayed and each spirit gets its own name, accessories, and traditional dresses. During the Nat festival, devotees come and pay respect, give donations to the nats, and you can see people dancing wildly as it being possessed by the spirit. This is an interesting time to visit Mount Popa, although it can be crowded and pretty wild. Be careful of the monkeys, on the mountain; don’t feed them, and try to ignore them.

2. Do you have tours available on specific dates?

Almost all of our tours are daily departure. To make a booking, you must submit a reservation form. Then we process the booking and reply to you within 24 hours.

3. I don’t want to make a reservation online, what can I do?

4. Can I make a reservation directly through a travel agent?

Yes, of course if you would like to make a reservation directly with the tour operator or travel agent, you will need to contact them directly. However, we are in good position to make the offer, make the booking and run the trip as we are a local tour operator.

5. What if the preferred hotel is not available?

You will be notified via an e-mail (within 24 hours after placing your order) and we will do our best to suggest or book an alternative similar hotel based on your preferences and our experience.

6. What is the latest time that I can make my reservation?

We can only guarantee bookings made at least 3-working days (not including Sun & Public holidays) before the departure date.

7. How far in advance can I book?

You can book as far as 24 months in advance, but please ensure you remember you have made the reservation. We will charge 20% of total rate is required upon the confirmation of services require full payment 60 days before departure.

You can expect to receive the invoice as a reminder well in advance of your trip.

8. How do I make a reservation for someone else?

To complete a reservation for someone else, simply type in his or her name instead of yours for guest name. Don’t forget to use your email address to receive your confirmation information.

9. What happens to my tour booking if my flight is delayed?

Please inform us and the hotel immediately as any changes or fee will depend on the hotel policy. We will also try our best to offer you similar ground services.

Myanmar The Golden land Myanmar...

is a hidden paradise in the world. We have natural scenic beauty making for landscapes that are incredibly picturesque. We have natural great lakes, vast river deltas, unspoiled beaches and Island archipelagos... snow capped mountains and deep forests with the rarest of flora and fauna. Myanmar formerly called Burma started its history around 250 BC.

According to archeological confirmations, the first kingdom of Mon Suwarnabhumi was founded around the port of Thaton approximately in 250 BC and the Mon established their civilizations in Ayeyarwady Delta and Tanintharyi in lower Myanmar. From the 1st to 9th century AD, Takaung, Beikthano, Sriksetra, and Hanlingyi cities were founded successively by Pyu along the Ayeyarwaddy valley in central Myanmar.

At 4th century , Rakhine State was founded at the west coastline of Myanmar by Rakhine tribe. There were three Myanmar Empires in the history .The First Myanmar Empire was founded by King Anawratha (1044 -1077 AD), the greatest king ever in the history, in 1044 AD by unifying all city states into a Kingdom. It was called The Great Myanmar Empire, the Bagan. The fall of Bagan Empire was about 14th century AD.

In the middle of the 16th Century The Second Myanmar Empire, the Hanthawady which was the greatest and biggest Empire within region, was established in 1551 AD by Kind Bayintnaung(1551-1581AD) and it was last till 1581. And the Third Myanmar Empire, the Konbaung , was founded by King Alaung Phaya in 1752 to 1760 AD. Started from 1825, 1852 and 1885 AD, Myanmar had three wars with British and fallen under British colony over 100 years. In 1942, Japanese ruled the country and regained its seat by help of Alliance in 1945. In 1948 January 4th, It was declared as a Independent Country to become present Myanmar.

Flora & Fauna Myanmar is rich in nature, the diversity of Flora and Fauna and it is rapidly becoming a new and exhilarating Eco-tourism destination for both Asia and the world. Myanmar is the largest peninsular country in Southeast Asia and the only country possessing snow-capped mountain. In the land area of 676552 square kilometers, forests covered almost half of the country, thus, Myanmar has been recognized as one of 25 hotspots of biodiversity.

It is also home to over 10000 species of plants, over 1,000 species of birds (representing 12% of world's total), 300 species of mammals, 360 species of reptiles and over 1000 species of butterflies. The Northeast India-Myanmar Pine Forests eco-region is one of only four tropical or subtropical conifer forest eco-regions in the Indo-Pacific region. Alpine rangeland of Madoi Madaing Razi also offers habitats for various species of flora and fauna species.

Such affluences of the biodiversity in nature present Myanmar a way for Eco-Tourism. Presently, there are 40 National Parks in the country managed by Ministry of Forestry, which includes Wildlife Sanctuaries, Bird Sanctuaries, and Protected Areas. Out of these, 14 are open to the tourists as designated Eco-Tourism Destinations offering trekking and hiking tours, bird watching tours, butterfly tours, orchid tours, elephant riding tours and other nature based interactive tours delete 

There are three distinct seasons in Myanmar with tropical climate, the summer from mid-February to Mid-May, the rainy from mid-May to mid-October and the winter from mid-October to mid-February. The average temperature in rainy season is 25 to 30 degree Celsius, 20 to 24 degree Celsius in winter and 30 to 35 degree Celsius in summer .Myanmar has less extreme weather and less natural disasters. delete 

Province and People Myanmar is a home of 135 races .The major national races are Kachin (with 12 different ethnic groups), Kayah (with 9 different ethnic groups), Karin (with 11 different ethnic groups), Chin (with 53 different ethnic group), Mon (only one ethnic group), Bamar (with 9 different ethnic groups), Rakhine (with 7 different ethnic groups) and Shan (with 33 different ethnic groups).

The estimated population is ranging from 56 to 58 millions. Myanmar is consisting of 7 states and 7 divisions: 

As Myanmar is a land of pagoda, about 90% of its population practices Theravada Buddhism. Even though it is Buddhist country, there is a complete freedom and understanding of practicing non Buddhism and there is no religious intolerance in Myanmar. About 5 % is Chrisianity, 3.5 % is Muslim, 0.5% is Hindus, 0.5 % is Animism and 0.5 % is on other faiths. delete

There are many different ethnic groups in Myanmar, all with their own languages. The majority of people speak Myanmar language as official language. There is also Foreign Exchange Certificate (FEC) used as US Dollar: 20 units, 10 units, 5 units, 1 unit. Travelers Checks and Credit Cards are not serviceable in Myanmar.

However some major hotels, souvenir shops, restaurants only in Yangon accept credit cards. Therefore, we recommend to bring sufficient amount of cash (U$$ is preferred throughout the country) while visiting Myanmar.

Electricity

Arrival at Mandalay airport and welcoming by your guide. From Mandalay, departure by road to Maymyo (about 1:30), a charming resort that has retained all the charm of the British colonial era: beautiful half timbered houses, gardens and carriages.

Along the way, stop at Amarapura, a former capital which is located 12 km south of Mandalay. Stop to meet its artisans weaving traditional clothes of silk and visit the monastery Maha Gandayon. Cross the wooden bridge U Bein teak from the imposing Shinpin Shwe Gu Gyi Pagoda. Arrival at Maymyo early afternoon and transfer to hotel. Your day ends with a carriage ride through the village typical. MAYMYO After breakfast, the morning is devoted to this little piece of Burmese countryside not so visited. Visit the Museum of the forest and Maymyo Botanical Garden. In the afternoon, go for a walk towards the waterfall Anisakan. More about me In 1984 I started working in the hospitality industry in Switzerland and Vietnam. I definitely moved to Vietnam in 1991 to help with the opening of the first international Hotel in Vietnam, the Sofitel Metropole Hanoi. In 1999 I took the challenge to build up Phoenix Vietnam together with a Vietnamese colleague, which was later merged with Asia Holidays in Myanmar to the Phoenix Voyages Group.
