Review: The Horne Section, That’s How I Like My Tour

The Horne Section begin their show in the most unpredictable of ways, beginning with a faux sound check, where drummer Ben Reynolds is called to check the sound levels of the bass drum. Booming around the room is the mischievous voice of frontman Alex Horne, and his audience soon learns that this is no ordinary sound check. This serves as a very efficient way of introducing his extensive live band, consisting of Ben, Joe Auckland on the trumpet, Mark Brown on the saxophone, Will (or Willip) on bass and Ed Sheldrake on keyboards. Soon the band are joined by Alex as he’s carried onto the stage by four willing audience volunteers, and the madness begins.

Horne’s comic imagination fuels the folly. He dances around the stage with infectious childish glee and surprising energy, cheekily taunting and mocking his band members in order to get reactions out of them. The Horne Section provide a smorgasbord of jazz, puns and zumba. Seeing these sensible-looking, suited men doing such ridiculous things is hugely entertaining. The group are certainly not afraid of making fools of themselves. And they include their audience in a friendly, non-invasive way and this ensures a very comfortable feeling in the room.

the horne section tour

The greatest joy of musical comedy is when the two integral elements are genuinely equally matched. These musicians are hugely talented, harmonising with each other with ease, performing with unpredictability and versatility. The show runs smoothly, as it is by now a well-oiled machine, and this is what allows the spontaneous quips and exchanges to shine brighter. Although we trust the group to lead us through the show comfortably and enjoyably, the off-script interludes are joyous because they give the show an exhilarating uncertainty.

And the Horne Section are excellent at manipulating their audience’s expectations, whether that be Alex appearing from underneath a giant top hat, or trumpeter Joe morphing into Henry Hoover. This show is full of surprises, and the group slather on the layers of ridiculousness as though they are icing a cake. There is no time to rest during this noisy, vibrant comedy extravaganza, and that’s what makes it so thrilling.

Philharmonic Sidelines 2 Players It Tried to Fire for Misconduct

The New York Philharmonic said the musicians would not perform for now, after a magazine article brought new attention to allegations of misconduct. They have denied wrongdoing.

A close-up of a man playing the trumpet next to a close-up of a man playing the oboe.

By Javier C. Hernández

The New York Philharmonic said on Monday that two players it had tried to fire in 2018 — but was forced to rehire after the musicians’ union challenged their dismissal — would not take part in rehearsals or performances for the time being after a magazine article detailed the allegations of misconduct that had been made against them.

The Philharmonic said that the players — the principal oboist, Liang Wang, and the associate principal trumpet, Matthew Muckey — would not appear as the orchestra deals with the fallout from a New York magazine article published on Friday.

In the article Cara Kizer, a former Philharmonic horn player, came forward for the first time to publicly discuss an encounter that occurred when she was on tour with the Philharmonic in Vail, Colo., in 2010. She told the Vail Police Department then that she had been sexually assaulted after spending the evening with the two players and was given a drink she came to believe was drugged, according to police records.

No charges were filed against the men and both have denied wrongdoing; their lawyers said they expect to return to the ensemble soon.

In 2018 the Philharmonic moved to dismiss Mr. Wang and Mr. Muckey , who both joined the orchestra in 2006. It said at the time that it had received reports that the two players had “engaged in misconduct,” which it declined to describe, and that it had decided to fire them after commissioning an investigation. But the players’ union, Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, challenged their dismissals.

The orchestra was forced to reinstate them in 2020 after an independent arbitrator found that they had been terminated without just cause.

Gary Ginstling, the Philharmonic’s current president and chief executive, said in an interview on Monday that the New York magazine report had “prompted a lot of strong feelings” and confirmed that Mr. Muckey and Mr. Wang were not playing with the orchestra at the moment.

Mr. Ginstling declined to say when they might rejoin the ensemble, or whether the orchestra would once again seek their termination. But he noted that the Philharmonic faced constraints because of the 2020 ruling, which the orchestra criticized at the time.

“The determination was through binding arbitration,” Mr. Ginstling said. “Binding is the key word.”

The orchestra committee, which represents players, said in a statement that it is “the overwhelming sentiment from the orchestra that we believe Cara” and that “we don’t believe these are isolated incidents involving Matt Muckey and Liang Wang.” The committee added that the orchestra has a culture of “not taking musician complaints seriously so musicians often do not feel safe in raising accusations of sexual harassment and assault” and called on management to take action to provide a safe workplace.

Sara Cutler, the president and executive director of Local 802, who took office last year, struck a different tone than her predecessors. She said in a statement on Monday that the decision to keep Mr. Wang and Mr. Muckey offstage for the time being “are good first steps but they can’t be the last.”

“As a woman, a musician and a new union president,” she said, “I am horrified by what was in the story and we are committing the full resources of Local 802 to erase the culture of complicity that has raged at the N.Y. Philharmonic for too long.”

Ms. Kizer had not been granted tenure with the orchestra when the encounter occurred; she wound up leaving the orchestra but did not discuss the process with New York magazine.

She said in a statement on Monday that since the article appeared she had been “receiving an influx of emails from survivors everywhere, and finding even more that mine isn’t an isolated experience in our industry.”

“I’m grateful for this outpouring of support, knowing that I’m not alone,” she said.

Alan S. Lewis, a lawyer representing Mr. Wang, disputed the idea that his client had done anything wrong, pointing to the arbitrator’s ruling.

“The Philharmonic decided that it would be best for Liang and the other musician to take a couple of weeks off while the Philharmonic manages the firestorm that the distorted article ignited,” Mr. Lewis said in a statement. “Liang loves the Philharmonic as well as his colleagues, who he holds in high regard and has always treated with respect and dignity. He looks forward to soon returning to the Philharmonic stage.”

Steven J. Hyman, a lawyer for Mr. Muckey, said that the report “should not be the basis of any adverse actions” by the Philharmonic.

“We expect that Mr. Muckey will be able to resume his position as associate principal trumpet and the matter once and for all put to rest,” he said.

The orchestra’s musicians posted a statement on social media on Saturday calling on the orchestra’s players and its management to help ensure a safe environment.

“We wholeheartedly denounce and find abhorrent all conduct that violates and degrades the women in our orchestra,” the statement said. “Such conduct is an affront to women everywhere. It must never be tolerated.”

Innovative Cloning Advancements for Black-footed Ferret Conservation

A black-footed ferret standing in their enclosure.

DENVER — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its genetic research partners announce the birth of two new black-footed ferret clones – known as Noreen and Antonia – and are providing an update on their latest efforts to breed previously cloned black-footed ferret, Elizabeth Ann .

A black-footed ferret poking their head out of a tube in their enclosure.

Noreen was born at the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center in Colorado, while Antonia resides at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia. Both were cloned from the same genetic material as Elizabeth Ann. They are healthy and continue to reach expected developmental and behavioral milestones. The Service and its research partners plan to proceed with breeding efforts for Noreen and Antonia once they reach reproductive maturity later this year. This scientific advancement to clone the first U.S. endangered species is the result of an innovative partnership among the Service and critical species recovery partners and scientists at Revive & Restore, ViaGen Pets & Equine, Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The application of this technology to endangered species addresses specific genetic diversity and disease concerns associated with black-footed ferrets. The Service views this new potential tool as one of many strategies to aid species recovery alongside efforts to address habitat challenges and other barriers to recovery. Elizabeth Ann remains healthy at the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center in northern Colorado, exhibiting typical adult ferret behavior. Planned efforts to breed Elizabeth Ann were unsuccessful due to a condition called hydrometra, where the uterine horn fills with fluid. Her other uterine horn was not fully developed, which is not unusual in other black-footed ferrets and therefore not believed to be linked to cloning. Elizabeth Ann otherwise remains in excellent health, symbolizing the early progress in biotechnology for species conservation.

A black-footed ferret in their enclosure.

Elizabeth Ann, Noreen and Antonia were cloned from tissue samples collected in 1988 from a black-footed ferret known as Willa and stored at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s Frozen Zoo. These samples contain three times more unique genetic variations than found on average in the current population. Introducing these currently unrepresented genes into the existing population would significantly benefit the species’ genetic diversity. All black-footed ferrets alive today, except the three clones, are descendants of the last seven wild individuals. This limited genetic diversity leads to unique challenges for their recovery. Besides genetic bottleneck issues, diseases like sylvatic plague and canine distemper further complicate recovery efforts. Cloning and related genetic research could offer potential solutions, aiding concurrent work on habitat conservation and reintroducing black-footed ferrets into the wild. Continuing genetic research for black-footed ferrets includes efforts to breed offspring from Noreen and Antonia, which would significantly increase the species’ genetic diversity. Collaborative work among partners also aims to achieve other long-term goals, such as developing resistance to sylvatic plague and potentially other diseases. Ongoing collaboration with innovative partners is driving scientific progress, underscoring the crucial role of conservation partnerships in safeguarding and improving American biodiversity. The Service will continue to provide updates as the research progresses. This research does not in any way supplant or diminish the Service’s efforts to recover the species in the wild. Those efforts, including reintroduction and monitoring of extant populations across the Great Plains, are ongoing, and the Service continues to collaborate with many partners working to conserve habitat for the species. More information about black-footed ferret conservation and biology is available from the Service’s National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center and additional Questions and Answers related to this announcement.
