Why Iceland?

Accessible via a short, five-hour flight from the east coast of the United States , Iceland is a lot closer than you might imagine

Despite its rather misleading name, only 11% of Iceland is covered by ice. That said, it is home to Europe's largest glacier, Vatnajökull, as well as 268 others.

Volcanic eruptions in Iceland happen, on average, every five years. Although international media coverage surrounding the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption might lead one to believe otherwise, volcanic eruptions in Iceland tend to not have much impact on daily life.

Attractions

Enjoy the soothing warm water in Iceland's most famous attraction, the Blue Lagoon

Daily itinerary

The Blue Lagoon is a mystical geothermal spa surrounded by jagged lava.

Day 1 - Arrival in Iceland: Collect Car at the Airport

Welcome to Iceland! You’ll make your landing at Keflavik International Airport, speed through customs, and find your rental car waiting for you.

As soon as you set off, the freedom offered by a slow-paced self-drive tour such as this one will become instantly apparent.

You’ll have three choices of what to do first. To reach Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, you’ll need to cross the Reykjanes Peninsula, but there’s no need to rush. It is an incredible place, defined by a haunting terrain of moss-coated lava, cone-shaped volcanoes, and geothermal areas worth spending time on.

Most travelers overlook these sites in their rush to get to the capital, but all are magnificent, providing the perfect introduction to the country’s nature.

You could also make a stop at the Blue Lagoon. This world-renowned spa is known for its healing waters, vivid azure colors, and luxurious treatments. It’s in the middle of a moss-covered lava field, giving it an otherworldly atmosphere.

Interestingly, the regenerative waters of the lagoon feature silica and sulfur, which may help improve skin ailments. Additionally, the water’s temperature averages 37–39° Celsius (98–102° Fahrenheit), providing a relaxing effect.

If you add the Blue Lagoon, it will be arranged according to your flights. If there is no time to visit the lagoon today, it can be added to another day. Your travel consultant will arrange this for you.

Finally, you could head straight to your hotel in Reykjavik. This city is increasingly world-renowned for its unique culture, wealth of history, thriving music scene, and quirky museums and galleries.

You can check out its famous cultural landmarks like the Perlan Museum and Observation Deck, the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center, and the Hallgrimskirkja church.

Alternatively, you can explore Reykjavik’s streets, especially the Laugavegur main street. Check out the different shops and boutiques and try the tasty offerings from some of Laugavegur’s restaurants and cafes.

Today may be the only chance to explore here, as you’ll spend the next thirteen nights in the countryside.

After an eventful first day in Iceland, you’ll spend the night in the capital.

Thingvellir National Park has still bodies of water that beautifully reflect the colourful sky.

Day 2 - Thingvellir National Park - Geysers - Gullfoss Falls

On day two, you'll drive out of Reykjavik to begin your immersive exploration of Iceland's incredible nature. Your main sites for today are along the country's most popular tourist trail, the Golden Circle.

The first of these sites is one of the country's three national parks: Thingvellir. Though it attained its status from its millennium of fascinating history, its nature is just as appealing. Situated in a valley directly between two tectonic plates, the landscapes of lava fields, birch woodland, and crystal-clear springs are breathtaking.

When booking, you'll notice you can plan a snorkeling tour into one of these springs, particularly Silfra. Snorkeling participants need to be comfortable in the water and be able to swim. The underwater views, defined by unbelievable shades of blue, make this a magical experience, exaggerated because you are swimming between the European and North American continents.

About 37 miles (59 kilometers) away is the second attraction of the Golden Circle, the geyser of Strokkur in the Geysir geothermal area. Surrounded by bubbling hot springs and vibrantly dyed soil, this phenomenon erupts steam and water every few minutes. Sometimes, Strokkur's eruptions reach and occasionally exceed  66 feet (20 meters) high.

This sightseeing route's third and final location is Gullfoss, about six miles (9.6 kilometers) from Geysir. Gullfoss is the most famous waterfall in Iceland. It boasts a unique color caused by the glacier water pouring from the second-largest ice cap in the country.

It also thunders with stupendous power into a valley carved out in the last Ice Age.

From the car park at Gullfoss, you can set out on a snowmobiling adventure on this glacier named Langjokull. As you rocket across a terrain of snow and ice, you'll see the magnificent landscapes of the Highlands, south, and west. It's a thrilling ride you'll never forget.

If neither snorkeling nor snowmobiling speaks to you, you can take a trip on the back of an Icelandic horse through the majestic landscapes surrounding the Golden Circle. Not only will this allow you to feel like an early settler exploring this untouched, primordial land, but it's an excellent opportunity to get to know Iceland's most famously friendly animal.

After seeing the major attractions in this region and embarking on a thrilling activity, you can revisit your itinerary and find any local hidden gems that most guests will overlook.

The Solehimar eco-village, the Secret Lagoon, and the Kerid crater lake are just three examples of the many sites that can easily be driven to from Gullfoss.

Once you've explored to your heart's content, you'll retire in a countryside hotel in Southwest Iceland for the night.

The sun sets on one of Iceland's most unique waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss.

Day 3 - Waterfalls and Black Sand Beach

On the third day of your two-week summer self-drive around Iceland, you’ll set out to explore another breathtaking and world-renowned region, the South Coast.

Throughout this journey, you’ll have magnificent views of the tumultuous Atlantic Ocean to your right and a never-ending parade of unbelievable features to your left.

The first of these magical sites is the waterfall of Seljalandsfoss, which stands an impressive 197 feet (60 meters) tall. The forces of nature carved an enormous cavern behind it centuries ago, allowing it to be viewed from some unique angles.

Nearby on a hidden off-the-beaten track, is another beautiful waterfall, Gljufrabui. This waterfall cannot be seen from the Ring Road and is often overlooked. Moreover, you must wade through a stream inside a grotto to reach the waterfall.

Though both are incredible to behold, these falls are gentle and serene compared to the neighboring Skogafoss. Located about 18.6 miles (30 kilometers) from Gljufrabui, the Skogafoss waterfall is renowned for its incredible power.

Thundering from a cliff face and shattering into a cloud of spray, Skofagoss cascades from a height of 197 feet (60 meters) and 82 feet (25 meters) wide. You can also marvel at this beauty from below and above due to an adjacent staircase.

After enjoying this site, you’ll leave the Ring Road for a thrilling glacier hiking tour. On the glacial outlet of Solheimajokull, you’ll explore dramatic ridges, ice walls, and crevasses, all under the lead of an experienced guide.

You’ll also be provided a helmet, crampons, and an ice ax. The guide will also brief you regarding safety and other essential reminders. Should the weather be clear, this is also an excellent opportunity to enjoy awe-inspiring views.

Continuing eastward, you’ll soon come to the Dyrholaey rock arch. It’s an impressive natural feature that boasts a resident puffin colony throughout summer.

Reynisfjara beach sits just by Dyrholaey and is another top coastal attraction. With black volcanic sands, enormous waves, and the fascinating sea stacks of Reynisdrangar, steeped in folklore, the atmosphere here is equally mystical, ominous, and mesmerizing.

The village of Vik sits adjacent to the beach, and from here, you can embark on an alternate tour: a trip inside an ice cave. Rather than hiking a glacier, you’ll be escorted up its slopes in a super jeep, then led into its mysterious chambers and corridors.

The tour is conducted on the ice cap covering the Katla volcano, one of the country’s most notoriously explosive peaks.

You can find many other attractions just off the beaten track on your itinerary. You may detour to any of them before retiring at your accommodation in South Iceland.

Skaftafell is is a nature reserve famous for its glaciers, waterfalls and other magnificent landscapes.

Day 4 - Skaftafell Nature Reserve - Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

On the fourth day of your two-week holiday in Iceland, you’ll explore the wonders of Vatnajokull National Park in the southeast.

This national park is the country’s biggest, named after its defining glacier, Vatnajokull. Interestingly, Vatnajokull is the largest ice cap in Europe and covers almost 10% of Iceland’s surface.

As you approach your destinations for the day, you’ll see many of its tongues creeping between the mountains, spilling over black sand deserts, lava plains, and historic farmland.

To see the wonders of Vatnajokull up close, you’ll first head to Skaftafell, a beautiful nature reserve sheltered by several of its outlets. Many hiking trails allow guests to explore the primal landscapes shaped by millennia of battles between the forces of ice and fire.

These trails also lead to some breathtaking features, the most famous of which is the black waterfall of Svartifoss. Its raw natural surroundings have heavily inspired modern Icelandic architecture.

You can embark on a glacier hiking tour in Skaftafell and scale the outlet of Svinafellsjokull. Even if you joined this activity the day before, each glacier is different in its landscape. You’ll see new and incredible views from its heights.

After Skaftafell, you’ll drive 35 miles (57 kilometers) to the second magical location in this national park, the glacier lagoon of Jokulsarlon. The beauty here nearly defies belief - a vast lake filled with sparkling, giant icebergs and home to countless playing seals. The sights will give you the feeling of seeing a fantasy novel come to life.

You can spend as long as you like marveling as your breath is being taken on the lagoon’s shores. However, if you want an even more immersive experience, you can join a boat tour amongst the icebergs on an amphibious vessel or a zodiac. Because you’ll spend less time on the road today, you can take this boat tour alongside the glacier hike at Skaftafell.

Beside Jokulsarlon is Diamond Beach, your final destination for the day. Hundreds of spectacular, glistening icebergs often decorate the black sands here, washed up after finally escaping the lagoon.

Once you’ve made the most of every opportunity this corner of Vatnajokull National Park offers, you’ll retire at a hotel in Southeast Iceland.

East Iceland is a remote and magnificent region few travellers manage to reach.

Day 5 - The East Coast

On the fifth day of your summer road trip around Iceland, you'll escape the regular tourist crowds as you enter one of the country's most remote regions, East Iceland.

This part of Iceland is best known for its dramatic, breathtaking fjords. Your route will be winding up and down and will be unforgettable as you head from site to site. The height of the mountains, the sparkling expanses of water, and the beautiful islands make every turn as awe-inspiring as the last.

Apart from their remarkable natural appeal, you can enjoy the area without crowds of other travelers vying for the best spot. Moreover, the Eastfjords are most renowned for their wildlife and cultural attractions.

Countless seabirds nest in the cliffs and swooping above the seas. Seal colonies often haul out on the beaches. Whales and dolphins are not uncommon in the bountiful waters, while herds of wild reindeer, which cannot be found anywhere else in the county, roam freely.

Regarding the culture, you'll pass through countless fishing villages that feel like they have been unchanged for centuries. You can seek out many spots deeply associated with legends.

You can stop at Djupivogur, a coastal fishing town beneath the large pyramid-shaped Bulandstindur mountain. Interestingly, folklore says that the wishes of people who visit Djupivogur during the summer solstice will be granted.

Another village worth visiting is Faskrudsfjordur, a former French fishing village. As you explore this village, you'll see imprints of the early French settlers through the different street signs, the hospital, and the harbor.

As you continue driving, you'll encounter many attractions tied to Iceland's folklore. You'll see elf rocks, said to be the homes of hidden people.

You'll also visit Lake Lagarfjlot, allegedly host to a fearsome monster. This creature, the Lagarfljot Wyrm, is said to be the cousin of the Loch Ness monster.

However, your main destination today is Egilsstadir, about nine miles (15 kilometers) from Lagarfjlot. Egilsstadir is the largest town in East Iceland and a perfect place to rest and refuel after a long drive. The town is also close to many attractions worth visiting.

Hallormstadasskogar, Iceland's largest forest, is about 17 miles (27 kilometers) from Egilsstadir. The forest boasts a beautiful woodland with dozens of trails leading to mesmerizing views.

If you booked admission to the Vok baths, you're in for a special treat. It's a luxurious spa in a lake just north of the settlement, boasting geothermal waters and incredible views. You can relax in its warm pools here while enjoying the enchanting scenery.

You'll stay in East Iceland in the evening to rest and regroup for the next day.

Myvatn is the name for a collection of stunning lakes renowned for their birdlife in north Iceland.

Day 6 - Lake Myvatn Mysteries

Day six of your two-week summer holiday to Iceland will be packed with action and adventure as you explore the north.

Setting out from Egilsstadir, the Ring Road will take you across the volcanic, lunar landscapes that define the northern reaches of Vatnajokull National Park. It's also an area where you can take some incredible detours.

For example, the most powerful waterfall in Europe can be found here. Dettifoss waterfall pours with incredible power into a valley of black rock, framed by two similarly impressive falls, Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss.

Dettifoss drops 141 feet (43 meters high and has a width of 328 feet (100 meters). Furthermore, the waterfall boasts an average flow rate of 50985 gallons (193 cubic meters) per second. With its sheer power, it was used in the 2012 film "Prometheus" during its opening scene.

Meanwhile, about 19 miles (30 kilometers) away is Asbyrgi, a canyon shaped like an enormous horseshoe. This canyon is framed by sheer cliffs and filled with lush forest. Old Norse religion says that Asbyrgi was formed after Odin's horse stomped one of its eight legs on Earth.

Once you have explored these sites, your main two destinations today are Husavik and the Lake Myvatn region. Husavik is one of the country's oldest settlements and among the world's most sought-after whale-watching spots.

If you include the activity upon booking, you can take a comfortable traditional boat tour to see these incredible creatures or a similar but more thrilling trip on a zodiac.

Humpback whales are famous for their dramatic leaps from the water's surface. These lovely creatures are abundant here and regularly joined by white-beaked dolphins, porpoises, and Minke whales—even rare species such as Blue whales and orcas.

Husavik is also home to the GeoSea Baths, which provide a great alternative activity to whale-watching. Unlike other geothermally heated pools and spas in Iceland, the water here is from the ocean. It's salty but with equally revitalizing minerals.

About 45 miles (72 kilometers) from Husavik is the Lake Myvatn region, North Iceland's most famous attraction. The lakes are a paradise for those eager to see the country's flora and fauna.

Species of arctic flowers and freshwater birds can be found in abundance. Furthermore, their geology is dramatic and unique, with rare formations such as pseudocraters and basalt towers found around every corner.

The lava fortress of Dimmuborgir is imposing and not just for its sheer scale. It's also steeped in legend, said to be the home of Iceland's thirteen Christmas trolls and their child-eating mother.

Meanwhile, the Myvatn Nature Baths is a geothermal spa in this area. The therapeutic waters and facilities here make it a great place to relax after a day of adventure and exploration. You can book this as an alternative activity to those above.

You can then head to Akureyri, the largest town in the north. If you still have energy, check out the lively nightlife, an esteemed restaurant, or the beautiful architecture.

You'll spend the night in North Iceland.

Both nature and culture enthusiasts should be sure to visit the beautiful and historic Godafoss waterfall.

Day 7 - The Troll Peninsula

Today, you'll continue to traverse North Iceland, focusing on the beautiful peninsulas and far-flung towns as you creep toward the Westfjords.

With stunning settlements such as Siglufjordur, renowned for the magnificent fjord it is nestled in, and Hofsos, home to the spectacular infinity pool, you can spend all day leisurely exploring this beautiful area.

Siglufjordur is a historic village with fantastic views from the harbor and towering mountains on either side. It's also the home of the Herring Era Museum, an award-winning museum revolving around the importance of fishing in the region's history.

After spending time in the museum, you'll head 37 miles (60 kilometers) toward the Troll Peninsula and stop at Hofsos. Known for its lovely seaside infinity pool, Hofsos is a favorite attraction for locals and visitors. Take a dip in the pool while enjoying some of the most stunning views you'll see in the country.

Four tours will also help immerse you even more into this unique region. Before leaving Akureyri, you can join a whale-watching trip from the town's picturesque harbor. Like in Husavik, the seas here are abundant with wildlife, and animal lovers will be grateful for another opportunity to marvel over the gentle giants of the deep.

Hauganes, a little town up the fjord of Eyjafjordur, offers a similar tour. It has a sea-angling component that lets you fish for dinner between sightings of whales, dolphins, puffins, and other seabirds.

Alternatively, you can enjoy a completely different experience with Iceland's animals by enjoying a horseback riding tour. The landscapes of the north are even more breathtaking when admired from the back of one of these friendly creatures, and your guides will share local legends about your surroundings as you travel.

Today's final choice for your activity is a dip in the Beer Spa in Arskogssandur. Located by a brewery with stunning views over Eyjafjordur fjord, the spa lets you bathe in young beer that's said to have many benefits for the skin. Adults can enjoy this unique experience with a cold pint in one hand.

After making the most of the coastal and rural beauty of North Iceland, you'll retire in Northwest Iceland.

The Westfjords on a still day are amongst the most peaceful places on earth.

Day 8 - Westfjords Introduction

On the eighth day of your two-week road trip around Iceland, you'll head to the magnificent Westfjords.

Few travelers get to this remote region due to its distance from Reykjavik and its vast size, but you'll have several days to explore its hidden gems. As such, you're welcome to make detours to visit some of the final sites of North Iceland en route.

The Vatnsnes peninsula stands out due to its abundance of attractions. It is, for example, home to many seal colonies and the fascinating Icelandic Seal Center. Furthermore, you can find the impressive monuments of the Borgavirki lava fortress and the Hvitserkur rock monolith here.

Standing 580 feet (177 meters) above sea level and 33 to 49 feet (10 to 15 meters) above its surroundings, Borgavirki was turned into a fortress by the early Vikings.

Meanwhile, the impressive Hvitserkur rock protrudes 50 feet (15 meters) from the ocean. It also resembles the shape of an elephant at a certain angle.

As you leave the Ring Road, the enormous mountains of the Westfjords will rise before you. As soon as you enter the region, you'll be awed by the countless waterfalls pouring from the peaks, the sparkling bays, and the breathtaking views around every turn.

While many natural sites and cultural towns are included in your itinerary, visiting Holmavik should be part of your journey, even if you're remotely interested in Iceland's history of magic.

Home to the Museum of Witchcraft and Sorcery, Holmavik is a fantastic place to learn how Icelanders attempted to manipulate the forces of nature through spells for centuries. Many of the artifacts on display are as disturbing as fascinating, such as a pair of necropants made of human skin.

Meanwhile, about 20 miles (33 kilometers) away is the associated Sorcerer's Cottage at Bjarnarfjordur. A turf house decorated to represent the life of a lonely Icelander in the 17th Century, the cottage contains hidden staves on the walls and furnishings, which were said to carry powerful spells.

Other fascinating Westfjords sites you can easily reach today include Reykholar, a town renowned for birdwatching opportunities and spectacular surroundings. Another is Drangsnes, which has energizing hot pools immersed in beautiful nature.

You'll end the day at your accommodation in the Westfjords.

A pair of rainbows arch over landscapes in the Westfjords.

Day 9 - Deep into the Westfjords

On your ninth day in Iceland, you’ll travel deeper into the primordial landscapes of the Westfjords as you head to its largest town, Isafjordur. Today is one of the most beautiful days on the road you could imagine as you travel over incredible mountain passes and around deep, majestic fjords.

Following your itinerary, you can depart the main road to find a range of hidden gems, such as waterfalls, coves, and birdwatching cliffs. Furthermore, many hiking trails dotted throughout the region will expose you to some breathtaking views. Moreover, you’ll get the chance to see the Arctic Foxes that are so abundant in this region.

To learn more about these creatures, you can visit the Arctic Fox Center in the picturesque village of Sudavik. The center focuses on the conservation, behavior, and charm of Iceland’s only native land mammal.

As you travel along the water’s edge, there’s a great chance of seeing whales, dolphins, and porpoises feeding in the bountiful fjords. If you see flukes or fins breaking the surface of the glistening waters, find a safe, legal place to pull up before enjoying the unforgettable experience.

Once you reach Isafjordur, you’ll be treated to some of the most beautiful surroundings of any town in Iceland. Flat-topped mountains frame the town and boasts stunning views up the glistening fjord. Considered the unofficial capital of the Westfjords, Isafjordur is the largest settlement in the region.

It’s the center for commerce, services, and education and played an essential role during the 16th century as a fishing and trading center. It also has several museums, galleries, and boutiques you may wish to explore before retiring.

Visit the Tjoruhusid restaurant and feast on some of the finest seafood in Iceland. Check out the Westfjords Heritage Museum, which houses exhibits about the Westfjords’ cultural and historical significance.

Stop at the Culture House, where you’ll find the town’s public library and a display of hospital artifacts. Marvel at some of the oldest houses in Iceland as you drive around the town. Some of these houses even date back to the mid-18th century.

After another eventful day of exploring, you’ll rest in your accommodation in the Westfjords.

Puffins gather every summer on the cliffs of Latrabjarg in the Westfjords.

Day 10 - Westfjords and Dynjandi - Latrabjarg Puffins

On your 10th day in Iceland, you'll focus your Westfjords exploration on two of its most incredible sites, Dynjandi waterfall and the cliffs of Latrabjarg.

Dynjandi is nestled inland, requiring a beautiful drive through some twisting mountain passes to reach. The trail heading to the waterfall is even more spectacular, requiring you to pass a parade of smaller waterfalls, each with a unique charm and appeal.

Once you approach Dynjandi, you'll understand why this is considered one of the best among all of the incredible sites of the Westfjords. Standing 328 feet (100 meters) tall, Dynjandi tumbles down what appears to be a set of perfectly carved steps descending a cliff. As it falls, its flow widens, increasing its dramatic scale and fantastic appearance.

After admiring and photographing this show-stopping wonder, you'll continue your Westfjords adventure toward the Latrabjarg cliffs, about 89 miles (144 kilometers) from Dynjandi. Another record-breaking feature, Dynjandi features the longest birdwatching cliffs in Europe and is home to millions of nesting creatures.

Among these, the most popular are the puffins. Not only are they incredibly numerous, but they are rarely bothered by guests, so long as they stay a few feet back. To see such adorable animals so closely, admiring how they interact in their couples and waddle around their burrows, is an intensely intimate wildlife experience.

Latrabjarg is also famous for a heroic rescue story. After a British trawler capsized beneath the cliffs, its sorry crew would have all met certain deaths had it not been for the bravery of the locals. Practiced in gathering bird eggs by descending Latrabjarg on ropes, they reached the shipwreck and saved the stranded sailors.

You'll retire in the area after making the most of these jewels and some hidden gems in the Westfjords.

Kirkjufell and the water Kirkjufellsfoss are two magical attractions on Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Day 11 - By Ferry from Westfjords to Snaefellsnes Peninsula

After several days of immersing yourself in the remote Westfjords, you'll depart the region and head to the incredible Snaefellsnes Peninsula. However, you can spend your morning seeking additional local sites.

Getting to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula from the Westfjords is easy, as a ferry large enough to escort your car regularly runs between them. Breidafjordur, the bay separating these regions, is an incredible place to take a relaxing cruise. It has countless islands teeming with birdlife and breathtaking views across the waters.

As you approach Snaefellsnes, it will quickly become apparent why many consider it the country's most mystical and dramatic region. Fifty-six miles (90 kilometers) long, it is lined by enormous volcanic peaks.

The mighty Snaefellsjokull volcano is on its tip, the largest and most impressive. It stands 4,744 feet (1,446 meters) tall and capped by a twin-peaked glacier. It also offers majestic views of Reykjavik from across the bay.

Interestingly, the glacier is also rich in folklore. It is believed to be an ancient energy source. Additionally, some Icelanders claim the rock formations around the glacier are where the hidden people live.

Next, you'll land in Stykkisholmur, about 56 miles (91 kilometers) from Snaefellsjokull. It's the largest town on the peninsula and a center of fishing culture and folklore.

After a stroll around this quaint and mystical place, you'll head to the main road around Snaefellsnes by crossing the haunting Berserkjahraun lava field.

As you'll have all of tomorrow to continue your exploration of Snaefellsnes, there's no need to rush around all the sites. Instead, you can focus on seeing the attractions along the peninsula's northern shore today and the attractions of the southern shore tomorrow.

If you do this, you'll want to prioritize a visit to Mount Kirkjufell. This uniquely shaped peak has been compared to a pyramid, an arrowhead, and a church. It stands alone by the coast, mightily at 1,519 feet (463 meters) tall, mightily commanding the attention of any who passes it.

Moreover, it was featured in Game of Thrones and is the favorite subject of many local photographers. The best angle to appreciate it is by its adjacent waterfall.

The Icelandic Shark Museum is another attraction on the northern shore where you can experience Iceland's culture. Located in the charming village of Bjarnahofn, the museum shows how the revolting Icelandic delicacy of hakarl, or fermented shark, is produced. You can give it a try.

After a fantastic start to your Snaefellsnes adventure, you'll retire for the night on the peninsula.

The coastal geology around Snaefellsnes is spectacular to behold.

Day 12 - Activities in Snaefellsnes Peninsula

After waking up on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula on the 12th morning of your two-week holiday in Iceland, you have countless sites and adventures ahead of you.

If you spent the day before exploring the north, then the wonders of Snaefellsjokull National Park and the peninsula's south await.

Snaefellsjokull National Park, named after the Snaefellsjokull glacier at its center, sits at the peninsula's tip and boasts the region's most beautiful landscapes. You'll marvel over the dramatic coastal geology, abandoned fishing villages, and expansive lava fields found here, with the shimmering ice cap as the perfect backdrop.

Aside from the glacier, one of the park's most incredible attractions is the Londrangar sea stack. This colossal, natural monument is all left of a once even greater crater. You'll see two pillars on a cliff, one measuring 246 feet (75 meters) high and the other standing 200 feet (61 meters) tall.

Londrangar is home to hundreds of thousands of nesting seabirds throughout the summer. This area is also renowned for its other wildlife, like arctic foxes, often seen hunting for eggs.

A second site within the national park is Djupalonssandur beach, 4.6 miles (7.5 kilometers) from Londrangar. While all of Iceland's stretches of black-sand shoreline are beautiful, Djupalonssandur is remarkable for its historic lifting stones. For centuries, the locals would come here to see which of the four rocks they could lift as a show of strength and test for their suitability to live on a fishing boat.

To add a thrilling adventure to your day, you can immerse yourself more into Snaefellsjokull by ascending its glacier on a snowcat tour. This unique trip will have you scale the slopes on an all-terrain vehicle designed for the ice.

Once you've enjoyed the country's third and final national park, you'll start your exploration of the south coast of Snaefellsnes. This part of the region will showcase why the area earned the nickname "Iceland in Miniature."

The enormous mountainside cleft of Raudfeldgsja begs hikers to explore its depths and locate its hidden waterfall. Bring sturdy shoes and water clothing if you wish to find the waterfall.

Meanwhile, the seal-watching beach of Ytri Tunga invites guests to relax on the shore and watch the animals at play. You'll see two seal species in the area:  the grey and the harbor seals.

If you're fascinated by Iceland's geology, you'll enjoy the hexagonal columns of the Gerduberg cliffs. In contrast, if you're interested in local history and folklore, you should wander through the mystical hamlet of Budir.

After exploring the diverse sites of Snaefellsnes to your heart's content, you'll spend a second evening on the peninsula.

West Iceland has many waterfalls, such as the gentle Hraunfossar.

Day 13 - Hraunfossar and Barnafoss - Deildartunguhver

Your 13th day may be the second-to-last of your Icelandic summer holiday, but the adventure is far from over.

Today, you can explore the rural, idyllic landscapes of the West and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime excursion. Of course, you can double-check your itinerary for any hidden gems in and around the Snaefellsnes peninsula.

Reykholt, for example, is a tiny picturesque village with a beautiful church and peaceful surroundings. At its Snorrastofa museum, you can learn how it was also the home of legendary medieval historian Snorri Sturluson. He was integral in documenting most of what we know about the Old Norse Gods and was heavily involved in all stages of Iceland's tumultuous civil war.

Borgarnes, meanwhile, was one of Iceland's first settlements. It has since bloomed into a stunning coastal town famous for its Settlement Center exhibition. Here, you'll be enthralled by the interactive displays documenting how wayward Vikings made this hostile land their home over a millennium ago.

One of the most notable natural attractions you can visit alongside these towns is Deildartunghver, 23 miles (37 kilometers) from Borgarnes. It is the highest-flowing hot spring in Europe and a magnificent place to admire Iceland's volcanic forces.

Near this dramatic geothermal area are the twin waterfalls of Barnafoss and Hraunfossar. Despite their proximity, the fury and power of Barnafoss' flow, which thunders down a narrow canyon, completely contrasts with the serene trickles of Hraunfossar—the latter streams calmly through a field of lava.

Though there's plenty to sightsee, it's possible to make your final full day in the country even more unforgettable with one of these three tours.

The first is a super jeep tour up the slopes of Langjokull glacier to explore its incredible Ice Tunnel. Carved by hand and machine, it's the only construction of its kind that's open to guests. The intensities of the blues and whites of the ice and the perfect creation of the corridors and chambers make this a unique and mesmerizing experience.

Alternatively, you can join a tour of the spectacular Vidgelmir lava cave. On this expedition, you'll explore a tunnel left over by a dramatic volcanic eruption and stand in awe at the resulting formations and striking colors.

Finally, you can join the Into the Volcano tour, a lava-caving experience you can only find in Iceland. Using a mining lift, you'll be escorted into the unbelievably vast, kaleidoscopic world inside the magma chamber of a dormant volcano. An incredibly rare formation discovered purely by chance, it is one of the few places in the world as memorable and phenomenal.

Once you've witnessed every nook of West Iceland, you'll return to Reykjavik. If you still have some energy left, make the most of the midnight sun and explore the beautiful streets of this cultural capital.

Grotta Lighthouse is one of Reykjavik's more peripheral attractions.

Day 14 - Drop the Car off at the Airport

Sadly, today concludes your 14-day summer holiday in Iceland. You'll need to drive back to the airport in time for your flight.

If you're lucky enough to have a late departure, there's a lot you can fill your day with. You can visit the natural sites surrounding the capital, such as the Reykjanes Peninsula, Mount Esja, or the Reykjadalur hot spring valley.

Alternatively, you can use the opportunity to do some souvenir shopping down the street of Laugavegur. However, we highly recommend organizing a ticket to either the Whales of Iceland exhibit or the Flyover Iceland experience.

The Whales of Iceland exhibit is a fantastic place for the whole family to learn about the world's largest creatures. You'll see life-size models of every species that frequent these North Atlantic waters, from the humble harbor porpoise to the colossal blue whale.

Meanwhile, at the Icelandic Flyover experience, you'll be strapped into your chair, suspended above an enormous screen, and be given one last incredible impression of Iceland's nature as you watch it unfold beneath you. This fantastic journey provides the sensation of flying like no other interactive experience can. It's complete with wind and scent effects for an immersive ride.

If you have a later flight and choose to visit the Blue Lagoon today, you'll end your stay unwinding before you head to the airport. It's the perfect place to relax as you bathe in the warm, mineral-rich waters while looking back on the incredible adventure you've just taken in the land of fire and ice.

If you have an early flight back home, we wish you a pleasant journey and hope you'll return to Iceland again.

At the harbour of Stykkishólmur, you will find the dark and magnificent Norwegian House (built in 1832 as the first double story timber house in Iceland). Head out on four wheels to explore Iceland's incredible landscapes © janiecbros / Getty Images

Driving in Iceland is a dreamy experience, and having your own set of wheels offers the freedom to explore the country at your own pace.

Picture the scene: you’re gliding along a road curling around a snowy hillside. On your right, a steep, rocky slope, the top shrouded in fog. On your left, the surf beats against vertical cliffs, with sea birds circling overhead. Before you, the crystal blue waters of yet another fjord stretch out to the horizon.

There’s no better feeling than heading out and seeing where the road takes you. But, should you require a little more structure to your overland odyssey, we’ve selected eight unforgettable Iceland road trips to get you started.

1. Hit the road on the Blue Diamond tourist route

Best road trip for volcanic activity Keflavík International Airport  –  Keflavík International Airport; 75 – 115km (50 – 70 miles); 1 day

From Keflavík International Airport, the Blue Diamond tourist route loops around the otherworldly lava landscapes of Reykjanes Peninsula , through quiet seaside villages and the wondrous Reykjanes Geopark, recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.

Nowhere else are the borders between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates as visible. All around are signs of geothermal and volcanic activity: the milky blue waters of the  Blue Lagoon steam into the sky, while  Geldingadalir (which erupted in 2021 and again in August 2022, but is now inactive) continues to wow visitors. Check safety alerts before you visit.

There are many more discoveries to be made on the route, including the windswept shore by Reykjanes lighthouse and Kleifarvatn Lake (home, according to legend, to a wormlike monster the size of a whale), and there are myriad hiking trails.

Planning tip: You can do a round trip in less than a day, but it’s worth staying for a few days to fully explore the region.

Two people stand overlooking Gullfloss waterfall in Iceland. The falls are huge, with vast amounts of water pouring from them into the lake below.

2. Take Road 435 as an alternative to the Golden Circle

Best road trip in summer Reykjavík – Reykjavík; approx 225km (140 miles), 1 day

For a different take on the Golden Circle – Iceland’s most popular day tour – try Nesjavallaleið (Road 435), which is open in the summer. It slings through moss-covered lava landscapes and up and down steep hills, with a breathtaking view of Þingvallavatn Lake in the distance. Along the road are quite a few marked hiking trails, beckoning road trippers to temporarily ditch the car and get up close and personal with the stunning landscape.

Puffs of steam are the telltale sign that you’re approaching Nesjavallavirkjum Power Plant and the exclusive ION Adventure Hotel . The road continues along placid lakes, including Úlfljótsvatn with a lonely church on its banks. You drive through a summer house region – where city dwellers go for weekend breaks – and then onto the main road past the perfectly circular Kerið crater lake, one of the obligatory Golden Circle stops.

After gawking at Gullfoss waterfall and spying Geysir (from which all other geysers take their name), you can drive back via Þingvellir National Park with a quick visit to the curious cave houses of Laugarvatnshellar.

Local tip: Bookworms should also consider making a stop at Gljúfrasteinn Laxness Museum in Mosfellsdalur. The museum is the former home of prominent Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955.

A black and white puffin, with its distinctive orange beak, stands on a ledge at the cliffs of Latrabjarg, Iceland.

3. Drive through the remote East Fjords

Best road trip to explore Iceland's maritime heritage Egilsstaðir – Egilsstaðir; approx 820km (510 miles), 5 days

Set up camp in Egilsstaðir and you’ll be in prime position to uncover the magical East Fjords. First, visit the village of Vopnafjörður, home to Selárlaug, a swimming pool on the banks of a salmon-filled river, which is also popular for fishing. In summer, you could cross the spectacular mountain pass Hellisheiði eystri (Road 917) to get here – but with its narrow and steep gravel road, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Regardless, take the easy way back (Road 85 and Road 1) to Borgarfjörður eystri, and recharge at the village of Bakkagerði with a hotel and spa, puffin-watching house and popular music festival Bræðslan, held in July. It’s also a good base for hiking in the stunning surroundings, with the trek to Stórurð, a turquoise lake enclaved by massive boulders, a particularly popular route.

You must return to Egilsstaðir before moving on to the next fjords on the route: Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður. Here, the maritime heritage of this region is honored in elegantly renovated historic houses: Randulfssjóhús in Eskifjörður and Beituskúrinn in Neskaupstaður, both of which now function as excellent, atmospheric restaurants. Drive back through Fáskrúðsfjörður to Stöðvarfjörður, where Petra’s Stone Collection museum amazes, showcasing the sheer variety of minerals that can be found in the mountains in the country’s east. From here, it’s a straight run back to Egilsstaðir for the last time – remember to watch out for reindeer!

4. See the Westfjords by road and ferry

Best scenic road trip Reykjavík – Reykjavík; approx 765km (475 miles)

On the way to the Westfjord from Reykjavík , you’ll drive through the rural region of Dalir. Here, dairy farm Erpsstaðir makes for a great first pitstop on the journey, where you can learn about traditional farming life and sample the homemade cheeses and other treats. There are also a number of historical sites nearby, including Eiríksstaðir, a living museum about life in the Viking era, and Guðrúnarlaug , the replica of the pool where the beautiful heroine of Laxdæla saga (one of the famous medieval Icelandic sagas) used to bathe.

Leaving Dalir in the rearview mirror, the first Westfjordian town you’ll reach is Reykhólar, home to Sjávarböðin, a spa specializing in seaweed baths (said to have all manner of healing properties). From here, the drive along the peninsula’s southern coast on steep gravel roads is both awe-inspiring and borderline scary, but your reward is a stroll on red-sand beach Rauðasandur and the view from Látrabjarg, Iceland’s westernmost point. Látrabjarg is also a haven for birdlife, with thousands of seabirds, including puffins, razorbills and guillemots, nesting in the cliffs.

You can take the ferry from Brjánslækur back, via Flatey , an idyllic island that seems to be frozen in time. It used to be the bustling center of the Breiðafjörður islands, but today, only seven people live there year-round. From here, the ferry takes you onwards to Stykkishólmur on Snæfellsnes , entering via a beautiful harbor overlooked by a distant lighthouse. It’s a view that might tempt you to stay a while.

Local tip:  If you have time to explore Stykkishólmur, check out the Library of Water , a modern art museum, and sample the locally sourced seafood on offer at Sjávarpakkhúsið .

5. Cruise around the otherworldly Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Best road trip for varied landscapes Start/end – Reykjavík; approx 440km (275 miles)

In clear weather, you can see the alluring ice cap Snæfellsjökull from Reykjavík. The drive there is an adventure with ever-changing landscapes. You’ll find sand and pebble beaches, volcanoes, a glacier and rhyolite mountains, lava fields and grassy terrain, caves, bird-filled cliffs and waterfalls.

The peninsula’s southern side is graced by the white-sand beach Löngufjörur, a hot spot for horseback riding, the otherworldly lava landscape around Búðir and the many wonders of Snæfellsjökull National Park .

On the northern side, there are charming fishing villages and Kirkjufell , one of Iceland’s most photographed mountains – particularly popular when the northern lights are out . Although it’s possible to do a whirlwind tour of Snæfellsnes in a day, you can easily spend a few: hiking, bird watching, sailing or simply taking in the views of the immense glacier.

Two people stand on the side of the road next to their car, admiring the ocean view, in Stokksnes, south-eastern Iceland.

6. Drive beyond the Ring Road on the ancient Kjölur route

Best road trip for Iceland's interior  Reykjavík – Reykjavík; approx 1378km (856 miles), at least a week

Spice up your Ring Road (Route 1) adventure by cutting through the barren interior of the country. Road 35, which splinters off from Route 1 past Gullfoss waterfall , continues along the ancient Kjölur route between glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull. It’s an F-road, so it requires a 4WD vehicle and is only open in the summer, but it is not as difficult as some of the other highland routes (for example, there are no river crossings.)

Around the halfway point is Hveravellir , an oasis of sorts in the snowy desert landscape, with a lodge, a natural pool for bathing and a multicolor geothermal area with marked hiking trails, including to Kerlingarfjöll mountains. You enter the Ring Road again about an hour’s drive from Akureyri , the “capital” of the north, which is great for catching up on some culture, visiting galleries or having a night on the town (with at least three bars to choose from!).

The Ring Road will take you from fjord to fjord, past eerie mountains and into quiet seaside villages. Fáskrúðsfjörður is known for a museum that honors the legacy of French sailors, located inside the beautifully renovated French hospital. In Breiðdalsvík drop by microbrewery Beljandi (named after a waterfall by the same name) and in Djúpivogur take a look at the granite egg sculptures in Gleðivík by renowned artist Sigurður Guðmundsson.

7. Explore local legends on the Diamond Circle

Best road trip of north Iceland Húsavík – Húsavík; approx 250km (155 miles), 2 days

North Iceland’s answer to the Golden Circle is the Diamond Circle . Make your base in the whale-watching town of Húsavík and head east to Ásbyrgi at the northern realms of Vatnajökull National Park . The horseshoe-shaped canyon is characterized by vertical cliffs – walk to the top of Eyjan for an amazing view of the sand beaches to the north and the North Atlantic. This is gyrfalcon territory, the largest falcon in the world, so keep an eye out for the majestic raptors.

With its lovely lake, lava fields, steaming fumaroles and bubbling hot springs, the Mývatn area is an obligatory stop on the drive back to Húsavík. Take time to marvel at the mighty Goðafoss waterfall in Skjálfandafljót. It’s called the “waterfall of the gods” because legend has it that the lawspeaker (a role in ancient Scandinavian society where someone is entrusted to recite the law) Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði threw his pagan sculptures in the falls after deciding that Icelanders should convert to Christianity in 1000 CE. Further upstream is Aldeyjarfoss, another spectacular waterfall surrounded by columnar basalt.

Planning tip: Don’t forget to reserve some time for Húsavík itself, a bustling town with interesting museums and fabulous seafood restaurants. Geosea Geothermal Sea Baths are perched up on Húsavíurhöfði next to a yellow lighthouse with an unobstructed view of the whale-watching boats on Skjálfandi Bay.

A lone white house stands on a small grassy hillside in the Westfjords, Iceland. Behind the house is the blue sea.

8. Take a leisurely drive along the Arctic Coast Way

Best coastal road trip for taking your sweet time Hvammstangi – Bakkafjörður; approx 900km (560 miles), 2 weeks

Designed for slow travel, the Arctic Coast Way slings along Iceland’s northern coastline, encompassing sleepy villages, six islands and amazing natural sites few people get to see. The route starts at the seal-watching town Hvammstangi in northwest Iceland and ends in windblown Bakkafjörður in the northeast. Along the way, drivers will encounter dramatic views, lonely lighthouses and some interesting stories.

At Þrístapar, you can learn about the gruesome fate of Agnes Magnúsdóttir, the heroine of Hannah Kent’s Burial Rites who was the last woman executed in Iceland. At Brimslóð in Blönduós, there’s the option to go foraging for your dinner, and in Skagaströnd have your fortune told at the Museum of Þórdís the Prophetess. In summer, the midnight sun bounces off the ocean surface, and in winter, the northern lights dance across the night sky in between blinking stars – far from light pollution.

Other interesting stops include Hvítserkur sea stack, the massive Arctic Henge in Raufarhöfn, an ancient stone monument inspired by Norse mythology, and the gannet colony at Stóri Karl on Langanes.

Planning tip: Take your time to explore on foot, and book whale-watching, kayaking or diving tours for a different perspective of this wild coastal region.

North Iceland Road Trip

  • Krafla Volcanic Region
  • The Myvatn Nature Baths
  • Aldeyjarfoss

The North Iceland Road Trip is perfect if you are looking for a little bit more of a secluded experience. Most people who travel to Iceland tend to stick to Southern Iceland and the many sites there. But there are just as many beautiful things to see in Northern Iceland. Admire the stunning Dettifoss Waterfall before seeing the whale watching capital of Europe, the small town of Husavik. From there be amazed by the Krafla Volcanic Region. There you’ll be able to see craters, lakes, and more unique landscapes.

Stop for a dip in the Myvatn Nature Baths to experience a lagoon-style outdoor bath. The incredible milky blue water will be the perfect way to rest and relax after hiking waterfalls and the volcanic region. One of your last stops is the stunning Aldeyarfoss waterfall and hot spring. In the summer months, you can drive right up to the area, but in the winter you’ll need to hike. But the stunning view makes it worth it. End your trip in the largest city in the North, Akureyri.

Westfjords Road Trip

  • Latrabjarg Cliffs
  • Breiðavík Golden Beach
  • Rauðasandur Red Sand Beach
  • Holmavik Museum of Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft

The Westfjords is a really fun and interesting part of Iceland. There are a few things you’ll need to know before visiting Iceland’s Westfjords . Much of it can be very difficult to reach during Iceland’s winter months, so this is best explored when there is a smaller chance of icy weather. If you want to see some super cute puffins, start your trip at the Latrabjarg Cliffs. From there, head to some of the amazing and unique beaches in the Westfjords. The Breiðavík Golden Beach and the Rauðasandur Red Sand Beach are both known for their unique sand colors and beautiful views.

One of the most popular things to see in the Westfjords is Dynjandi, a massive lacy and cascading waterfall. It is very wide and absolutely stunning in person. You don’t want to miss it. End your trip with a little bit of Icelandic culture. At the Holmavik Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft, you’ll learn about a unique part of Iceland’s cultural history. It’s a super unique stop on this Iceland road trip itinerary.

Snaefellsnes Peninsula Road Trip

  • The Arnarstapi To Hellnar Cliff Walk
  • The Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge
  • Londrangar Basalt Cliffs
  • Landbrotalaug Hot Springs

If you are looking for a shorter road trip in Iceland, consider the Snaefellsnes Peninsula Road Trip. There are several stops in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula , but it is a small part of Iceland, so it won’t take you too long to hit all of the best ones. Your first stop is Kirkjufell Mountain, which is Iceland’s most famous mountain. You will probably recognize it from several travel magazines and popular Iceland Instagram posts. From there, experience the Arnarstapi to Hellnar Cliff Walk.

Experience amazing views while hiking at the Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge. It’s not too far from the cliff walk and is actually one of the lesser-known attractions on the peninsula. Head to the coast before making your way to the end of your road trip in Iceland to see the stunning Londrangar Basalt Cliffs. From there, you’ll end your trip by taking some time to rest and relax after hiking the area at the Landbrotalaug Hot Springs. It can be tricky to find, and that means it is not a huge tourist area. Often times you’ll find you are the only ones who have made the trip to discover the geothermal pool on the abandoned farm.

A mountain that looks like the point of a hat in the distance. In the front of a picture is a small waterfall that cascades into a river. There is grass and moss covering the mountain and the fields around it.

East Fjords Road Trip Itinerary

  • Laekjavik Coast
  • Djupavogskorin Geothermal Pool
  • Streitisviti Lighthouse

The East Fjords Road Trip will take you along a portion of Iceland’s Southeastern Coast and a little bit inland. It is a beautiful part of the country and much of it is along the Ring Road . Start by admiring the unusual rock formations along the Laekjavik Coast. It is a black sand beach with rectangular rock formations jutting out from the ocean along the shore.

Continue your driving itinerary for Iceland’s East Fjords with a stop at the Streitisviti Lighthouse. It is a uniquely designed lighthouse on the coast built-in 1922. Next head up the coast to the Gufufoss waterfall. Spend some time hiking the area and admire the beautiful plunging waterfall. On your way back home, head a little inland to the Hengifoss waterfall. It is the 3rd highest waterfall in Iceland and well worth a little bit of a detour as you end your East Fjords road trip in Iceland.

A black sand beach with rock formations on the beach and in the water. There is a large rectangular rock formation right where the waves crash that has moss on it. In the distance you can see the slope of a mountain.

Icelandic Highlands Road Trip

  • Landmannalaugar
  • Vatnajökull Glacier and National Park
  • Jökulsárlón

The Icelandic Highlands is a plateau in Southern Iceland that is sparsely inhabited. Your Icelandic Highlands Road Trip will give you the opportunity to see some of the most stunning and uninhabited parts of the country. In Thorsmork take some time to camp and hike in the valley. It is a beautiful nature reserve where you can see all kinds of animals in Iceland . It can be difficult to get to though, so consider taking a guided tour of Thorsmork . Continue through the Icelandic Highlands and make a stop at the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, one of the best National Parks in Iceland .

One of the most popular things to see there is Landmannalaugar which is the edge of the Laugahraun lava field. You’ll be able to experience some stunning views that were created by a volcanic eruption in the 1400s. Your next stop is another National Park, Vatnajökull. The entire park is centered around the massive Vatnajökull glacier which is an absolute must-see. End your tour of the beautiful highlands at Jökulsárlón, the glacial lake just on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park.

An aerial view of a rocky canyon with a volcanic river bed running through it. It is a dark and moody image with the canyon covered in dark moss and grass and the sky is cloudy.

Small Towns In Iceland Road Trip

  • Seyðisfjörður
  • Stykkishólmur

On the Small Towns in Iceland Road Trip, you’ll drive around almost the entire country stopping at so many cute small towns along the way. In Seyðisfjörður you’ll get a taste of what it is like to live in Iceland’s Eastern Fjords. It is an adorable town off the Ring Road and has the Fjarðarheiði Mountain Pass which connects the plateau it’s on to the rest of Iceland. From there head to the charming village of Reykjahlíð which has a population of just over 220. It is on the shores of Lake Mývatn which is a beautiful place to stop.

Continue around Iceland’s Northern coast and towards the Snæfellsnes peninsula where you’ll find the beautiful town of Stykkishólmur. It is the main town on the peninsula and you’ll find a few tourist attractions there. As you make your way around Iceland, stop in Heimaey, which is actually an island just off of Iceland’s southern coast. You’ll need to take either the ferry or fly to get there, but it is worth the trip. End your road trip in Iceland in the town of Höfn. There you’ll be able to see massive glaciers while you stroll through town.

A street in a small town in Iceland. Down the street there is a rainbow painting, small shops, and a white church. Behind the church you can see the slope of a mountainside.

Icelandic Hot Springs Road Trip

  • Blue Lagoon
  • Reykjadalur Hot Spring
  • Secret Lagoon
  • Hrunalaug Hot Spring
  • Seljavallalaug Hot Springs

One of the things Iceland is most known for is its Hot Spring culture. It is one of the most popular things to do in Iceland, so why not take an Icelandic Hot Springs Road Trip. Start at the iconic Blue Lagoon just outside of Reykjavik. This one is pretty touristy, but it is one of the most well-known. Next, you’ll want to stop at Sky Lagoon and then the Reykjadalur Hot Spring. Both are still pretty close to Reykjavic, but they aren’t as full of tourists as the Blue Lagoon.

As you head farther from Reykjavic, make stops at the Secret Lagoon and then the Hrunalaug Hot Springs. Hrunalaug is tucked away in the mountains, so it is much quieter and you get some absolutely stunning views. Head father down Iceland’s southern coast to Seljavallalaug Hot Springs. It is incredibly dreamy you take an easy hike to get there, which makes it more secluded within the mountains.

It is Iceland’s oldest man-made swimming pool, but keep in mind it is not nearly as hot as you might expect from an Iceland hot spring. If you have the time, drive out to the Djupavogskorin Geothermal Pool to finish your Iceland road trip of the best hot springs.

A man made swimming pool hidden in a valley in Iceland. there is snow on the ground, large rocks all around it, and in the distance the slope of a snow covered mountain. At the end of the pool is a small building that is cream with black doors.

Hidden Gems In Iceland Road Trip

  • Valahnukamol
  • Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon
  • Viking Village Film Set
  • Studlagil Basalt Canyon

There are so many hidden gems in Iceland that they deserve their own road trip. In Valahnukamol you’ll discover a hidden area of beach where you’ll find otherworldly rocks jutting out from the ocean as waves crash against them. It isn’t a well-known area, which is why it’s a hidden gem, and that also means it’s not full of tourists. At the Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon, you’ll find a beautiful two square mile lagoon, with very few tourists. It is just off the Ring Road, but not very crowded at all.

One of the more unique things to see in Iceland is the Viking Village Film Set. It was built in 2010 and was meant to resemble an old Viking village for a movie that was being filmed in the area. It is just off of a gravel road outside of Hofn and not many people know about it. It’s a cool way to experience a taste of early life in Iceland. End your trip at the stunning hidden gem that is the Studlagil Basalt Canyon. The canyon is made of towering basalt rock columns with a beautiful blue glacial river flowing through it. It is an absolute must-see, and fairly free of tourists.

Looking down a rocky canyon in Iceland. The rock columns are a gray color with orange iron stones throughout it. Running through the canyon is a crystal blue river. One of the best stops on an Iceland road trip

If you are thinking of taking an Iceland road trip, we are sure that one of these amazing adventures is going to be the perfect Iceland road trip itinerary for you. Whether it’s your first time visiting Iceland or your fifth time, each of these road trip itineraries offers unique experiences, stunning views, and more.

The trip was great! I loved not having to worry about planning and that all of the background information and hotel booking was completely taken care of. It was nice knowing that all I needed to do was show up in Iceland and the rest was taken care of. I also loved the self-driving aspect which made the trip feel more personal and intimate than a large tour bus.

1. CAN YOU GO ON A SELF-DRIVE TRIP TO ICELAND?

Absolutely! In fact, Iceland is a popular road trip destination. Opting for a self-drive tour means that you can discover Iceland at your own pace, taking in the views as you go and stopping along the way.

A self-drive trip is the perfect way to experience Iceland if you like to have flexibility while travelling. This makes it the ideal choice, whether you prefer to explore at leisure, or pack in as much sight-seeing as possible.

You can find up-to-date information about visiting the Land of Fire and Ice on our Iceland Travel Update page.

2. IS IT EASY TO GO ON A SELF-DRIVE TOUR IN ICELAND?

With just one main road around the country, the Ring Road (or Route 1), getting around is easy. Iceland’s Ring Road loops around the island in a circle, allowing you to drive to the many different corners of the country.

If you decide to spend some time in Iceland’s central highlands , then you’ll need to upgrade your rental car to a 4x4 vehicle. With a jeep you can venture onto the unpaved F-Roads that wind their way into Iceland’s vast interior.

For a safe and enjoyable experience, we recommend doing a little pre-trip preparation. Check out these helpful guides to driving in Iceland for more advice:

3. HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED FOR AN ICELAND ROAD TRIP?

This can vary based on how long you have to spend in Iceland and what you’d like to see and do during your tour. Choose the timeframe that works for you from our range of Iceland self-drive trips from 4 days to 21 days

Even with just 1 week in Iceland , it’s possible for you to tour the entire Ring Road on an express itinerary.

Or for a more leisurely experience, why not explore just one or two regions? For example, you could drive the must-see Golden Circle route from Reykjavík, then head to South Iceland to discover more beautiful scenery.

Extending your trip to 2 weeks in Iceland gives you more time in each location and means you’ll have shorter drives between stops. With an extra week, you could mix seeing Iceland’s top attractions with a few hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path excursions.

Get the ultimate self-drive tour experience in 3 weeks and traverse the Iceland south coast. You’ll pass glacier lagoons and dramatic fjords on the country’s east coast, en-route to Iceland’s remote north. From here go on to discover the wildlife of the Westfjords, and marvel at the beauty on the Snæfellsnes peninsula before you return to Reykjavík.

Thanks to its incredible natural beauty, Iceland draws fellow adventurers from around the world into Reykjavík and the countryside beyond. This means that you will find plenty of quality accommodation options outside of Iceland’s lively capital city.

7. HOW TO PLAN A ROAD TRIP AROUND ICELAND?

Normally, before you go on a road trip you need to do lots of research on the area and what you can do there.

Thankfully, you can remove all of this stress by choosing to book with Nordic Visitor. Our self-drive tours have been tried-and-tested by Iceland experts so that you can simply take the wheel and enjoy the journey.

8. ARE ICELAND SELF-DRIVE TOURS WORTH IT?

We may be biased, but we really believe that self-drive tours are one of the best ways to see Iceland. More importantly, we think that you will too! Opting for a self-drive itinerary, over a guided tour, gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore Iceland at your own pace.

9. WHICH IS BEST TO VISIT ICELAND: A SELF-DRIVE OR GUIDED TOUR?

The answer to this really depends on what experience you are looking for. If you would like to see Iceland independently, then a self-drive tour is best.

With a rental car, you’ll have the opportunity to stop for photos and go to viewpoints whenever you like. By opting for a self-guided tour over a small group tour, you won’t be bound by time limits, and you’ll be able to choose whichever excursions and restaurants suit you.

On the other hand, if you’d rather sit back and let an expert tour guide show you the sights, then a guided small group tour of Iceland could be ideal. This may be especially true if you are travelling to Iceland solo or don’t feel comfortable driving.

On a guided group tour, you’ll get to experience the sights in the company of like-minded travellers. We only partner with reliable local suppliers and promise that your tour group will always be small. This way you receive the best and most personal service.

Alternatively, you could opt for a privately guided Iceland tour . This would see you, or you and your chosen travelling party, accompanied by an expert local guide, meaning that you can set the pace. This way of exploring blends the advantages of guided travel with the pros of an independent tour.

A private tour is ideal for a family trip, as you and your kids will have your own personal guide to answer your questions about Iceland.

10. WHICH IS THE BEST MONTH TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND?

There isn’t really one particular best month to see the northern lights. That said, the best time of year for spotting the aurora borealis in Iceland’s skies is winter, from October to March.

Travelling in winter is key to seeing the northern lights in Iceland. This is because the nights are at their longest and darkest. As a result, the colours of the aurora borealis stand out more, compared to when the night skies are light in summer.

Whenever you visit between October and March, be prepared to stay up late to increase your chances of seeing the northern lights. The best time of day to see the aurora borealis tends to be from 11 PM to 2 AM.

For the most vibrant sightings, head out of town away from light pollution. This means that a self-guided road trip is a great way to travel in Iceland if you’d like to see the northern lights. Simply check your aurora forecast app for predicted sightings, hop in the car and head to a beautiful viewing spot of your choice.

There are a number of ways that you can chase the aurora, including going on a dedicated northern lights tour in Iceland . Alternatively, add an aurora borealis excursion to your winter road trip, or simply go in search of the lights for yourself.

It’s worth remembering that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, meaning that sightings can’t be guaranteed on your trip. That said, Iceland has plenty of other natural wonders for you to marvel at, from volcanoes to dazzling glaciers.

Check out this handy blog for information on the best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland . For even more tips and advice, read our Iceland northern lights guide .

11. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ICELAND?

The best time of year to visit Iceland depends on where you would like to go and what activities you plan on doing.

Iceland undergoes distinct seasonal changes, so you will have a different experience in summer, compared to visiting in winter. This simply means that there are more reasons to return to Iceland in the future!

In summer the temperature is milder and you’re likely to get better weather conditions. This is ideal for sight-seeing in Iceland’s more remote regions and for activities like glacier hiking.

The long daylight hours in summer also mean that you can pack more into each day. Self-drive tours give you the flexibility to take advantage of the longer days, allowing you to explore well into the evening. Imagine admiring the midnight sun while bathing in one of Iceland’s secluded hot springs.

Meanwhile, autumn and winter in Iceland offer a different set of experiences. Contrast exploring late into the night under the midnight sun, with dark winter nights spent chasing incredible displays of the northern lights.

Although winter does bring some additional challenges, such as colder weather and trickier road conditions, we think the rewards are worth it. You can enjoy soaking up the festive atmosphere around Christmas and New Year, or try activities like snowmobiling on a glacier.

For more detailed information about the seasonal changes to the weather and daylight hours, check out these guides:

  • Iceland's climate and weather conditions
  • Iceland's time and daylight hours

12. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can choose the arrival date that suits you best, based on the trip and time of year. Each tour has an online availability calendar, so once you have decided on the right trip for you, simply select your preferred start date.

Summer self-drive tours in Iceland are possible from April to October. Please note, tours that venture to remote regions, including the highlands and Westfjords, have a shorter season.

Meanwhile, you can begin winter tours anytime you like between October to April. But bear in mind that Christmas and New Year tour departures are only available to start on a limited number of days before Christmas Eve.

For exact dates, please check the online availability calendar for the tour you are interested in.

13. CAN I CUSTOMISE MY SELF-DRIVE TOUR?

Yes, of course. All of our self-drive tour packages are carefully planned to give you a wonderful experience in Iceland. That said, they can also be easily tailored to suit your needs.

When booking your tour online, you can choose from a variety of ways to customise your trip.

Opt to extend your stay in Iceland by adding extra nights before or after your trip. Or, consider treating yourself to an accommodation upgrade.

At this point, you can also add expert-curated activities to your trip. You can choose from guided excursions, like ice caving or horse riding. Alternatively, for an altogether more relaxed experience, go for a luxury spa session at the Blue Lagoon.

Get in touch with us if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, or would like to talk to an expert about creating the ultimate Iceland tour for you.

14. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?

We recommend checking what flights are available before you book your tour. However, it’s best to hold off on confirming your flights until after your dedicated travel consultant has been in touch.

You will normally hear from your dedicated travel consultant 2 working days after making your booking online. By waiting until you have been introduced to your travel consultant, you can then get your flights to match up with your personal itinerary.

And, of course, if you have any questions, you can ask your consultant for advice.

15. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY ICELAND ROAD TRIP?

Iceland is famous for its ever-changing weather, so it’s best to be prepared for all conditions.

Make sure to pack warm layers and waterproofs, whether you are travelling in summer or winter. That way, come rain or shine, you can get out and about to enjoy Iceland’s natural beauty.

Your self-drive tour will take you to a range of iconic attractions where short walks are necessary to make the most of your visit. So, as well as warm and waterproof layers, be sure to bring sturdy walking boots or shoes with a good grip for hiking.

During winter, you’ll need to wrap up warm as temperatures can drop below freezing. Whereas in the summer, milder weather means that you should bring sunscreen and some lighter layers.

If you’d like to visit any hot springs or geothermal pools, like the renowned Blue Lagoon, remember to bring swimwear and sandals.

Below you’ll find a basic all-season packing list for your self-drive tour of Iceland. For more information on what to pack according to the season, read our Iceland packing guide .

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Thermal base layers

Planning an Iceland Road Trip – Package or Self-planning?

If you arrived on this article, it means that you are considering purchasing a Self-drive Package. However planning a trip to Iceland is a lot of fun so let’s quickly review the self-planning option.

If you have already made up your mind and don’t want to plan things yourselves, you can skip to the next section .

Planning an Iceland Road Trip

In both case you have the advantage of the self-drive compared to a group tour. You can stop any time you want and spend as much time as you want at a location you love.

Self-Drive Package

  • You get an Itinerary defined by local experts
  • You don’t have to spend time reading hotels reviews and comparing everything
  • One overall price for easy budgeting
  • You have less flexibility in the choice of hotels based on your preferences (you just select the category)
  • You pay extra for the services provided by the company organizing the tour
  • I don’t recommend booking a Tour package if traveling in October. They often offer the Summer packages and days are too short to complete the drives and visits.

You plan the road trip yourself

  • You can decide exactly what you want to see
  • Tours are often focusing on the main sites, if it is your second time you should consider planning yourself to go off the beaten path
  • If you have specific requirements in terms of hotel, you can do your own research and book exactly what you like
  • A lot of hours are required to plan everything and compare hotels
  • You might not have access to some of the hotel discounts the tour company has

Check out my guide to plan your Iceland Road trip yourself

Before I start entering the details and explaining the criteria to choose your self-drive tour company and your tour, you might just want to have a look at my suggestions for packages.

I have selected Guide to Iceland. They are a very dynamic and passionate local team of experts. I really enjoy their platform and their options.

  • SUMMER- 10 days – Best of Ring Road + Snaefellsnes Peninsula – Check out program and latest prices
  • SUMMER – 14 days  – Complete Iceland overview including the Westfjords – Check out program and latest prices

Choosing the Self-drive Iceland Tour company

Local or international.

There are 3 options in terms of purchasing a self-drive tour in Iceland:

  • From a local rental car agency
  • From a local travel agency
  • From a travel agency in your country

The advantage of using an agency in your own country is that it is easy to communicate with them in case of issues, but they probably are using a local agency anyway so it is adding cost.

My choice goes to a local travel agency with local experts to define itineraries. The team at GuidetoIceland is responsive and passionate.

Flexibility

See how many personal details you want in your itinerary. Some companies offer tours without any changes possible, other allow you to modify a few things or select extra options. Or you can go with travel agents who create everything to your taste… However I think most of the time they still use standard itineraries and charge you more… (just saying)

Self-drive Iceland Tour company

Winter vs Summer

The company you choose should have different packages for Summer and Winter – if they are offering the same, be concerned! Daylight is so different, you can’t fit the same amount of sightseeing and driving.

Don’t forget to check out the minimum age to drive the car and any other conditions they may have (deposit when renting car etc) so that you make sure you agree with those.

Of course, this is always a good thing to read before selecting a company. All companies will have negative reviews, something can always go wrong and some people have impossible expectations… Check out the percentage of bad reviews and if the companies has taken the time to answer the bad one in a respectful manner.

Cancellation Fee

Don’t forget to check the cancellation terms!

For example, if you are booking on GuidetoIceland , you can cancel within 24 hours. Past that, they will keep a significant fee for their work planning and booking. It makes sense but some people are surprised, so I am being upfront. Therefore I  recommend taking their cancellation insurance. The fee is very reasonable and you will be able to get a refund anytime!

Main Criteria to select a self-drive tour in Iceland

Your first criteria to select your self-drive tour in Iceland is how long you have to explore the country. A few days? One week? 10 days? More?

If you have 1 week or under My recommendation when selecting your tour is not to book a Full ring road tour in only 7 days. This would imply a lot of driving and feeling frustrated not to be able to stop as much as you want. With one week or less focus on one region either South Iceland or West Iceland or North Iceland.

If you have more If you have more than a week, you can consider driving the complete tour of the Ring road. And if you have time, I recommend adding the Snaefellsnes peninsula with its beautiful Kirkjufell mountain.

Criteria to select a self-drive tour in Iceland

How long you have for your holiday is important, but the period when you are traveling is as well. In Winter the days are really short and you cannot cover as much road and sites as during Summer. Book an Iceland self drive tour that is designed especially for Winter or Summer. However as I said at the top of the article, I don’t recommend booking a tour package when traveling in October. They tend to offer the Summer tour packages but the days are too short for that.

Take into consideration how much driving you are willing to do each day. For example the famous Glacial lagoon of Jokulsarlon is 4h30 away from Reykjavik! That’s one thing that is missing from the otherwise great information on the GuidetoIceland Seld-drive tour packages , it’s how much driving is required each day. But you can get a rough estimate using Google maps.

Of course, you should also select your tour based on your interests:

  • If you want to see glaciers, waterfalls and icebergs, head to the South Coast
  • If you want to see more volcanoes, geothermal activities and geological features, head to North Iceland

And the last criteria to consider is your budget. Self drive Iceland Tour Prices depends on:

  • Time of the year
  • Number of people travelling together in the same vehicle
  • Type of car (size and 2WD/4WD choice)
  • Accommodation type
  • Optional Activities (you can add activities such as glacier walking, glacier boat tour, snorkeling in a fissure…)

If you have limited money to spend, your can see Budget self drive tour options here . Some are a lot cheaper because they are camping tours which can be fun!

Criteria to select a self-drive tour in Iceland 2

What car to choose for your Road Trip Package

Manual or automatic .

Iceland rental agencies offer have both manual and automatic cars. So it depends on what you are used to driving at home. If you are staying on the main roads, driving is very easy. To my opinion, on gravel and bumpy roads, the automatic was more comfortable but the Manual was way more fun!

2WD or 4WD?

  • If you plan on doing the Central Highlands, the question is easy, you need a 4WD and to know how to cross rivers
  • If you plan on sticking to the ring road ring and going through all major sights, then you just need a standard car
  • If you have some time and want to discover some areas more in depth, this is when you have to go all ‘pros and cons’. The 4WD is more expensive. But by renting a 4WD your don’t worry engaging in gravel roads. If it looks promising, you can go no problems!

Iceland Road Trip - renting a car in Iceland

Choose your accommodation level

There is not much about accommodation I can tell you.

With an Iceland self drive package, you have a lot less flexibility. You basically choose the level of comfort you are looking for. Note that some accommodations in Iceland have shared bathrooms so make sure the conditions are clear when booking.

I think accommodations is totally secondary in Iceland. It is so beautiful that you want to spend as much time as possible exploring and admiring the scenery. The hotel is just for sleeping 🙂 . But this is a very personal opinion.

accommodation options in Self drive tour Iceland

Should you book extra activities now or once there?

There are great activities that can be booked on top of the program basis. For example:

  • Glacier hiking in Skaftafell
  • Snorkeling in the Silfra fissure in the Thingvellir National Park
  • Enjoying a boat trip to get closer to the glacier at the Jokulsalron lagoon
  • Visiting a sparkling ice-cave that can’t be accessed alone (winter only)
  • Going whale watching from Husavik
  • Relaxing at the Blue Lagoon
  • Hunting for the northern lights

Iceland Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon boat tour

If you book on Guide to Iceland, once you select your date and number of people, you can select the activities you want and book them right away.

Pros to booking right away

  • Some tours have limited spaces (e.g. cave tours) so you would not be able to get in at the last minute
  • You have your full budget clear and settled
  • You can’t be late. You can’t spend more time at a place you like if you have to be somewhere else at a specific time

Personally, I prefer to book everything in advance so that the trip is well structured and it add a pace to the tour.

Don’t forget to wear appropriate clothing and have the right equipment. Check out my Iceland packing lists for Winter and Summer .

Best Iceland Self drive Tour Summer

And here comes my selection of great Self-drive tours in Iceland. I have spend time reviewing the itineraries and reviews. I think they are well balanced in terms of scenery and driving time.

I have selected 3 tours depending on your available time:

7 days – South of Iceland + Golden Circle

As I said earlier, if you have only a week, I don’t recommend going for the full ring road tour because it will be a lot of driving and frustration not to be able to stop. This is a great program to explore the best of the Iceland’s South Coast, the Golden Circle and the Snaefellsnes peninsula. There is already a lot for you to see here.

My Highlights – Kirkjufell mountain ( see my photos ), Jokulsarlon lagoon (and don’t forget to cross to Diamond beach – see my photos ), the Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind ( see my photos )

Check out program and latest prices

10 days – Best of Ring Road + Snaefellsnes Peninsula

This is a great tour to have an overall view of Iceland with the South, the North and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. In the North, if whales are not essential to you, I recommend skipping it to spend more time exploring the Myvatn area. It is home to really fascinating geological features.

My highlights – A bit of everywhere, same as above for the South. Once in Myvatn, I recommend Dimmuborgir, the pseudo-craters, Hverir and Leihrnjukur (have a look at my North Iceland Guide )

14 days  – Complete Iceland overview including the Westfjords

A full tour of Iceland including the magnificent and less visited Westfjords!

Best Iceland Self drive Tour Summer

Best Iceland Self drive Tour Winter

And I have done the same with the Winter tours, making sure you can complete the program easily (you can drive less in Winter). But make sure you can drive on the snow. Check out my article about driving in Iceland in Winter .

6 days – Golden Circle + South Coast

Golden circle and South Coast of Iceland with less stops than in Summer because things are less accessible. You will still enjoy magnificent scenery, the powerful waterfalls and the icebergs at Jokulsarlon.

I recommend the Ice cave tour. It is becoming a bit too touristy but it is still a magnificent place!

Driving in iceland in Winter

10 days – Complete Ring Road

Enjoy the Complete Ring Road Tour to get an overview of the whole island in Winter.

Hello this was very informative! I want to take my family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids (6, 9, and 12). I have a quote from Iceland Travel for the Ring Road Express Road Trip (Self Guided). We would be there for 9 days in April. We are so excited to go but this whole process seems very overwhelming to me. I don’t want to book with the wrong agency, spend time at the wrong places, etc. ANY INSIGHT would be so appreciative!

August 28, 2019 at 9:37 PM

Hi Michael First, you won’t spend time in the wrong place – apart from 30min of driving somewhere on the Ring Road in the South, the landscape is MAGNIFICENT EVERYWHERE. There are no wrong places. No kidding. Plus you are doing self guided so you have some flexibility. You don’t have to follow the plan to the letter. If you see something you like, you can stop. Regarding the agency, as long as there are no big amount of bad reviews on the net (you will always have some), it should be fine. Most companies do a good job. I know it is hard to see the good when the media list all that can go bad, but most people have no issues at all. They just don’t write about it when it goes well 🙂 And if the company answer all the reviews on the Internet cordially, it is a good sign that there is a team and some customer satisfaction focus. Don’t worry. Have a positive mindset. And you are going to have a wonderful time! All the best, Claire

Doing 8 days/7 nights in May, with a early arrival and late departure. 7 day itineraries seem to short but the full ring drive seems it may be a time stretch. Any suggestions, half of the group of 4 are not into long hiking distances so driving and stops may work.

February 22, 2020 at 9:25 PM

Hi Paul It may work, you just have to be diligent with how much time you spend at each stop. Plus, in May the days are long so you can see a lot. I wish you wonderful travels! Claire
