FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS

For tips on viewing the northern lights, read on. We’ve answered the most commonly asked questions about Nordic aurora borealis tours here to help you make your dream trip a reality.

Alternatively, find out how to make a booking , have a look at our FAQs , or learn about our Book With Confidence travel plan.

1. ARE THE NORDICS SAFE TO TRAVEL TO?

Yes, the Nordics are widely regarded as safe for visitors. Actually, the Nordic nations – Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland – continually rank among the top 10 safest places in the world . This is because they have low crime rates, good standards of healthcare, and excellent road safety.

2. WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon. You can see them illuminating the sky when charged particles from solar flares collide with atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, near the North Pole. This collision creates varied shapes and colours that ripple, flash or glow in the sky.

3. WHAT MONTHS CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS?

You have the best chance of spotting the aurora borealis in the winter months – October to April. To make out the colours of the aurora, you need dark winter nights. In the summer, daylight hours are so long that you’ll find the sky is too bright to see the glowing lights.

As it is a natural occurrence, spotting the northern lights is not guaranteed. But you can increase your chances of witnessing them by visiting the Arctic Circle in winter.

4. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

As you need a dark sky to distinguish the aurora, the best time to see the northern lights is at night. The peak hours tend to be between 11 PM and 2 AM, which is why your guided tour will likely depart after 9 PM.

You could also stay at a hotel with an aurora wake-up service. The staff will let you know if the lights come out late in the night, so you don’t have to stay up waiting for them!

The best time of year to see the northern lights is winter, between October and April. This is when Nordic nights are the longest and darkest, which means you have higher chances of catching sight of the aurora.

Winter is a great time to visit the Nordics for other reasons too. Check out these guides to the top winter activities you can enjoy:

Things to do in Norway in winter

Things to do in Iceland in winter

Things to do in Lapland in winter

5. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

You can see the aurora borealis at high northern latitudes, especially around the Arctic Circle, as this is where solar activity is strongest. That’s why the Nordic region is the best place to see the northern lights. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Svalbard all lie within or near the Arctic Circle.

In fact, Iceland and the northern regions of Norway, Sweden and Finland are located within the “aurora zone”. Also known as the “northern lights belt”, this is a latitudinal band between 65-72°N where high auroral frequency and intensity occurs. Visit this zone for the best chance of seeing the aurora.

6. WHERE CAN YOU SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS IN SCANDINAVIA?

Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the countries that make up Scandinavia. If you want to go to Scandinavia to hunt for the aurora borealis, your best bet is to visit the northern parts of this region – Swedish Lapland and Northern Norway. It is unlikely you’ll see the aurora in Denmark.

You can witness the northern lights in the neighbouring Nordic nations of Finland and Iceland too. Although these countries aren’t technically part of Scandinavia, they have many similarities and also happen to be great places to catch the aurora borealis!

Lapland – an area covering northern Sweden and Finland – is a fantastic destination for aurora chasing. You could head to Rovaniemi and Kemi in Finnish Lapland, or Abisko National Park near Kiruna in Swedish Lapland.

Or visit Northern Norway for your aurora borealis tour. Take your pick from Norwegian destinations such as Tromsø, Svalbard, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands and Nordkapp (North Cape).

Alternatively, go in search of the aurora borealis in Iceland. With its wide open skies and location near the Arctic Circle, you could see the lights from anywhere in the country. For your best chances though, head away from towns with street lights so you can spot the colours more easily.

In Scandinavia you could seek out the aurora borealis in the countryside or on the coast. Plus, not only can you enjoy northern lights tours, but also bucket list activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and staying in an ice hotel.

Discover more reasons to visit Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland on our ultimate Scandinavia guide .

7. HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

To see the aurora borealis, you need to be in a northern country on a clear, dark night, away from artificial lights. Although the aurora don’t show up on demand, these top tips will give you the best chances of witnessing them.

Firstly, make sure you visit northern regions close to the Arctic Circle. Iceland, Northern Norway, Svalbard and Lapland are the best destinations to see the northern lights in Europe.

Secondly, time your aurora borealis tour for the European winter. The long, dark nights will help you spot the colours lighting up the sky.

Thirdly, avoid light pollution found in built-up areas. This means heading into the countryside where there is less artificial light compared to towns and cities. You could spend some days out in remote areas, or opt for guided evening tours from your city base instead.

Another thing you can do for northern light viewings is check the weather and aurora forecast . Although you can’t do this very far in advance, during your trip you’ll be able to find out if the evening will be clear of cloud or rain and if solar activity will be strong.

You’d also increase your chances of seeing the aurora borealis by taking a guided tour. A local expert would accompany you and take you to all the best spots, sharing their insider knowledge with you.

Read our article on how to see the northern lights for more viewing tips.

8. HOW LONG DO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS LAST?

When the aurora borealis are treating you to their glorious light show, you might find they glow for a few minutes. The lights can show up several times in one night, or last for a couple of hours in one go.

There is no rule as to how long the aurora borealis last, of course, as they are a natural occurrence. If you see them for yourself, no doubt you’ll cherish every second of their beautiful magic.

9. HOW DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA BOREALIS?

The northern lights can be tricky to capture on camera, but with some preparation and the right equipment you can do it. Here are some top tips for photographing the northern lights:

  • Use an SLR camera with manual focus
  • Bring a tripod as you’ll need to do a long exposure shot
  • Get a remote shutter release so you don’t have to touch the camera at all
  • Use a slow shutter speed of between 15 and 30 seconds

For more tips on photographing the aurora, see our northern lights travel guide .

10. WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

It can get rather cold in the Nordic winter, especially if there’s a cool wind. The last thing you want is to feel the chill while you hunt for the aurora borealis at night. That’s why it’s important you pack the right clothing before your trip.

Many northern lights tours will provide you with thermal suits to help you stay warm while you’re out chasing the aurora. It’s also recommended that you wear warm layers underneath.

Here is an essential packing list:

  • Insulated jacket and trousers (windproof and waterproof)
  • Thermal wool underlayers
  • Warm hat, gloves and scarf
  • Warm and sturdy boots

Get more packing advice by reading our experts’ tips and tricks on dressing for northern lights viewing .

11. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can select your chosen arrival date online when reserving your Nordic Visitor tour. For northern lights packages, the arrival dates are between October and April as this is the aurora viewing season.

12. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Absolutely! If you’d like to spend more time in a particular destination, you can request this when booking your tour online. Your dedicated travel consultant will get in touch to confirm the extra days with you.

If you are taking a small group tour, you can add extra nights to the start or end of your trip. This is because the group tour itself is fixed as you will be exploring with fellow visitors on a fixed itinerary.

13. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT TICKETS?

You should book your flights once your Nordic Visitor package is confirmed. We recommend you check flights beforehand to find appropriate dates and prices, but only purchase them after your travel consultant has secured your northern lights tour.

Your Nordic Visitor consultant will send you a confirmation email with all the details you need to buy suitable flights.

14. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY TRIP?

The weather is somewhat unpredictable in the Nordics, no matter the time of year you visit. In winter you should always come prepared for cold temperatures, which means bringing warm clothing. Here are the essential items that we recommend you pack for your trip:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Waterproof and thermal jackets
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Insulated, waterproof boots
  • Thermal underlayers
  • Waterproof trousers

For more detailed information on what to pack for your Nordic tour, read our travel guides for Iceland , Norway and Lapland .

See what our clients say

This was a bucket list trip. The company are specialists and I’ve valued their advice. Everything from the when to go for the best opportunity to see the lights and equipment needed and provided. Our activities included, the Ice Hotel, night photo shoot, snowmobiling, guided walk and the sky station meal. All excellent and well run by knowledgeable experts and guides. The Abisko Lodge is warm comfortable and relaxing the food is excellent and the staff welcoming, friendly and very helpful. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a different and exciting experience.

My daughter and I had an amazing time on our trip, we didn’t want it to end! Everything went according to plan, each excursion was well organized and everyone involved with each activity, as well as everyone at the lodge was kind, friendly, positive and happy, which makes such a difference to your whole experience. The food at The Abisko Mountain Lodge was also incredibly good. Our room was large, comfortable and well-furnished. The bathroom too was also spacious and well-equipped. The outdoor clothing provided was of very good quality which kept us warm, and the staff members are happy to change items if they are not quite the right size for you. This is my second trip with Weekend a la carte and I’m sure there will be more as I have complete trust in them. I highly recommend Aurora Nights, it was fabulous.

Brilliant short break. Hotel Ranga was lovely, excellent food. Managed to see the Northern Lights as well! Iceland on the whole was quite expensive but a lovely place to visit, the people were very friendly.

We had a wonderful time! The food at the lodge was amazing and there were some great vegetarian dishes. I had the best beetroot I’ve ever had (beetroot tartare). Everyone was really friendly and all the guides were good fun and very knowledgeable.

A special thanks to William and Petri who were really friendly and really added a personal touch to our trip. The activities were really well planned and we especially enjoyed the trip with the huskies. The area we were in is stunning and the lodge was very nice. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family.

Thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The Abisko Mountain Lodge was fantastic, every member of staff was friendly welcoming and charming. Accommodation, upgraded room was excellent. The food in the lodge definitely deserves the high reviews. Good breakfast, great hime made lunch soups and extremely tasty evening dinners.

The included trips were great. The only let down was the camera night, couldn’t see the lights no one fault, but we were walked through thigh high snow to be left on a frozen lake for the duration of the trip. There was no warning of the difficult walk and we had a 91 year old with us and I have hip problems! That said the guide was great, as were the ones on the skimobile and husky rides. We went up to the sky station in a snow storm with high winds, added to the experience!

Would go back in a heart beat.

We had little communication with Weekend a la carte, no need as all communications were clear and contained all the information we needed. Very informative emails

Would use again if going back

We enjoyed both the hotels that were arranged by weekend a la Carte Aurora nights. The Porsmork trip was very enjoyable, both guides were fantastic and informative. The Northern Light hunt trip out of Reykjavik with Superjeep was an adventure and we got to see the lights, worth braving the cold at -6.

A well organised trip which was tailored to our specific requests. The arrangements all ran perfectly and any queries prior to the holiday were handled very quickly and professionally. The standard of accommodation and organised tours was very high. I would use this company again and recommend them.

This vacation has without without doubt, has been the best experience we have ever had. The organisation from the minute we landed in Kiruna until we departed at the close of our trip was second to none. The transition between hotels was always seamless and punctual. Everywhere we stayed was beautifully clean and the meals were top quality. Every driver was polite, entertaining and very knowledgeable, furnishing us with invaluable information about Sweden and the activities in which we were to participate. The snowmobiling was wonderful giving access via our guide, to stunning panoramic views of the mountain whilst viewing reindeer in their natural habitat. Our guide demonstrated how to use the snowmobile safely he was pleasant and informative. When visiting the reindeer on the Sami reservation; we found the brother and sister team who hosted lovely. Again they were so hospitable and helpful and feeding the reindeer up close was a wonderful experience.

They provided additional activities for us to try and we were treated to a traditional Sami lunch in their hut. They provided us with invaluable information appertaining to their culture and caring for their reindeer. The reindeer were in superb condition and happy in their environment. Similarly, when out with the dog sleds the experience was magical. Two hours of beautiful scenery, and frozen lakes, finishing with a one-on-one experience massaging the dogs. Magic! We were so impressed with the care that was placed upon ensuring the dogs were comfortable, well-nourished and so loved by their owners/handlers.

Now to the photographic experience. A large group of us were treated to a demonstration of how to operate some serious camera equipment with tripod. Each of us was loaned the camera and given assistance setting up the camera on a frozen lake in preparation for the appearance of the Northern Lights. We were taken to this lake on large wooden sleighs pulled by a snowmobile. We cannot speak too highly of the two young men who accompanied us on this experience. They could not do enough for us. They were there to offer assistance with our cameras throughout the two-plus hours we were on this beautiful lake.

They advised where to position the camera and when the Lights appeared, what a performance. We had a two-hour display of this most breathtaking phenomenon. We were so fortunate to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for which we are so grateful. We will never forget this memorable holiday and cannot thank you and everyone who assisted in making a lifetime dream come true. Karen & Andrew Adamson

Sweden , Norway , and Finland provide the traditional holiday with snow sports like husky driving and snowmobiling while Iceland provides one of the most spectacular landscapes on earth to explore. Volcanoes, waterfalls, whales and open vistas are what thrill the senses on a super jeep or self-drive adventure.

What makes Sweden so special when it comes to the Northern Lights?

Sweden is home to one of the most recognised northern lights holiday destinations on earth – Abisko. We pioneered Abisko as a northern lights holiday destination and still offer market leading breaks to this premier aurora destination. Sweden is also home to the original ICEHOTEL which is now 30 years young. If you are visiting Swedish Lapland on a northern lights holiday then you must try to see this amazing structure even if the thought of a night staying in one of its amazing art suites does not appeal.

We have worked with many local partners since we launched 15 years ago and are proud to offer some of the best places to stay in the region. Besides Abisko Mountain Lodge and the ICEHOTEL we offer:

  • Arctic Gourmet wilderness cabins
  • Arctic Retreat

In many cases we can offer exclusive use of lodges for our guests. Our breaks are designed to give you the best of what the region has and we offer action packed breaks where we endeavour for you make the most of your time on your northern lights adventure.

If it’s the Lapland experience you are looking for then Swedish Lapland should be high on your list. It is the less developed of the Nordic countries from a tourism point of view which means you can enjoy more exclusive wilderness experiences.

What about other holidays?

Whether you are looking for a 3 night action packed short break or a longer northern lights holiday spanning 2 weeks and several destinations we offer a choice of bucket list breaks.

Can you see the Northern Lights in the autumn?

Whilst many people’s initial thoughts are of a mid-winter break to see the northern lights they are visible from September through to early April and the autumn is a superb time to visit. A self-drive holiday at this time allows you to explore the vast landscapes and appreciate the majestic Fall colours.

What about combing the countries and visiting more than one?

Finally if you are thinking that you may only visit Scandinavia once in your life and want to see and do as much as possible then take a look at our epic multi country northern lights breaks . These combine Sweden with Iceland and parts of Norway. Iceland offers a wonderful contrast to Swedish Lapland for anyone planning a northern lights holiday. As the world’s youngest country in Geological terms it is truly a land of fire and ice.

We offer holidays in 2 parts of the country – The North and South West!

What is Reykjavik like?

Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital city is in the south and with so many flight connections is easily accessible from many European countries as well as US cities. Our Breaks in the south in most cases combine experiencing Reykjavik with northern lights hunting in the south of Iceland away from any artificial light and in an area renowned as Iceland’s best for consistent sightings.

Exploring the Golden Circle featuring the Gulfoss waterfall, Pingvellier National Park and the celebrated erupting Geysir are a must for any first time traveller to Iceland. There is also the world famous Blue Lagoon where you can relax in geothermal waters and whale watching off the coast. We work with the best guides in South Iceland to provide you with both day time and northern lights explorations in specially adapted Super jeeps that allow you to get out and experience the awe inspiring beauty that is Iceland.

North Iceland remains largely undiscovered and provides wilderness on a different scale. It is possible to do both husky and snowmobile adventures in the north as well as soak up the geothermal waters at the Myvatn Baths. If travelling in Autumn then a trip to the Askja volcanic crater is a must. North Iceland around the port of Husavik, is the whale watching capital of Europe. If you are planning a midnight sun holiday or an autumn northern lights holiday then a day out searching for Humpback whales is a must! North Iceland is also accessible now with direct flights from London Gatwick with Easyjet.

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

Northern lights travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are at their peak from late September to late March.

Where can I see the Northern Lights?

The best places to see the Northern Lights are all located in the “Auroral zone” – an area that stretches around the Northern Hemisphere at a latitude of about 66 to 69 degrees north – including parts of:

What causes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with elements in our atmosphere (such as nitrogen and oxygen), creating brightly coloured dancing displays of light.

Am I guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

While Northern Light displays can never be guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon, our local leaders do their best to ensure you get to see nature’s greatest spectacle.

Can the Northern Lights be predicted?

Yes, the Northern Lights can be predicted to some extent.

The activity level of the Northern Lights depends on many things (of which some are predictable and some are somewhat random), including sunspots, coronal holes, solar flares and geomagnetic activity.

If you’re not an astronomer, your best bet is to check the local Aurora forecast – a KP-index number of 3 or higher means you have a good chance of seeing the Lights.

Can I see the Northern Lights with the naked eye?

Yes, you can see the Northern Lights with the naked eye. Humans can most easily see the green and white of the lights at night. A camera, however, does not have the same limitations as the human eye, so the colours may appear brighter and more brilliant in photos.

Can I photograph the Northern Lights?

Of course! There is no magic recipe for capturing the Northern Lights. Still, you’ll want to set your camera on a tripod and ensure it has a manual mode functionality, so you can adjust the aperture and shutter speed to capture the spectacular display best.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

22 best northern lights tours: Iceland, Lapland, Norway and more

From snowshoeing in lapland to an expedition cruise in the glaciated wilds of greenland, these are the best ways to see the northern lights.

northern light tours uk

T he brilliance of the northern lights is their unpredictability. One minute you’re stomping through the snow minding your own business and then — boom! There they are, swooping, swaying and arcing across the Arctic night sky in brilliant greens like a Nordic god going crazy with a laser in the heavens. Like a shape-shifting message from another planet writ large across the skies.

The northern lights are a sight that belongs utterly to the north and they can be as unnerving as they are beautiful. What you’re seeing is electrically charged particles from solar winds hitting the earth’s atmosphere, but it feels more like sorcery than science. They come unannounced. They are gone in a flash.

You can download every aurora forecast app going during peak season (late September to early April), but part of the allure of the aurora is its random nature. That said, joining the right group tour seriously increases your chances. As does rocking up at the right time: the current solar cycle is expected to peak in 2024 or 2025.

We’ve rounded up some of the best Northern Lights tours, which also bring other winter activities into play — from snowshoeing in Finnish Lapland to dogsledding in Alaska and glacier hiking in Iceland — just in case that elusive nighttime spectacle don’t show. But fingers crossed it does.

1. Arctic Circle aurora adventure, Exodus

Myllykoski in Finland (Getty Images)

Looking like a Narnia fantasy in winter, Oulanka National Park in Central Finland is a thrillingly off-the-beaten track base for hunting the northern lights, with mile after silent mile of snow-polished fell, boreal forest and river valley to explore on snowshoes, cross-country skis or by dogsled. On this seven-nighter, you’ll be staying at Basecamp Oulanka, cosy wooden lodges on the shores of the frozen expanse of Juuma Lake where, with luck, you’ll be greeted by aurora fireworks. There’s also a proper focus on the outdoors, with skill-based activities like snow-shelter building and fire-making workshops. Prices include accommodation, activities, meals, transport, local tour leaders and specialist equipment.

2. Alaska winter adventure, Intrepid Travel

An ice cave and supraglacial lake on the Matanuska Glacier (Getty Images)

Tailored specifically for adventure-loving travellers, this eight-day trip turns the spotlight on Alaska in all its frozen winter glory, with plenty of opportunity to chase the northern lights. Starting in Anchorage and ending in Fairbanks, you’ll journey across the snowy wilds to bases that have been hand-picked for their astounding aurora-spotting potential. Memorable moments are many, but you won’t forget the daunting beauty of the Matanuska Glacier, peering up at the northern lights as you snowshoe in Denali State Park, staying at remote Sheep Mountain or bathing in Chena’s natural hot springs in a hurry. Accommodation with breakfast, some meals, transport and activities are included in the price.

Group size 1-12 Price ££

3. Iceland northern lights, Exodus

Falljokull Glacier (Exodus)

One of the most visually striking countries on earth, Iceland excels in photogenic backdrops that show off the northern lights at their spangly best. Kicking off in Reykjavík, this four-night trip quickly ramps up the drama by whisking you south to crashing falls, volcanoes, glaciers and black-sand beaches. You’re here for the auroras, but you’ll be bombarded with natural beauty in other forms too: strapping on crampons to hike across Falljokull Glacier, dipping behind the 60m chute of Seljalandsfoss waterfall and walking among icebergs on Diamond beach near the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon. You can feel pretty smug about your footprint too, as Exodus always has an eye on sustainability.

4. Sweden, Finland, Norway: the grand aurora tour, Aurora Zone

On a reindeer sleigh ride in Levi (Getty Images)

Dipping into the snowy wilds of three countries, this brilliantly choreographed seven-night adventure is one you’ll be raving about forever. You’ll be whisked from Kiruna in Swedish Lapland across the frozen tundra and forests of Levi in Finland and beyond to Tromso in Norway, maximising your chances of aurora gazing. With any luck, the northern lights will shine, but even if they don’t this trip is the Arctic dream, with dogsledding, snowmobiling and reindeer sleigh rides, and stays in winter-dream digs, from an igloo at the Icehotel to a glass-roofed aurora cabin. Good news: there are no hidden extras, as the price covers flights, accommodation, all meals, transfers, activities and cold-weather gear.

5. Autumn auroras in Ilulissat, Regent Holidays

Ilulissat (Lisa Michele Burns/Visit Greenland)

Everyone raves about Lapland and Iceland, but if you turn the temperature down and the Arctic wilderness factor up several notches you get Ilulissant in western Greenland. This is nature in overdrive, with an immense glacier feeding an icy fjord, mountains glowing pearl-white as if lit from within and icebergs chinking in Disko Bay. A spectacular place to see the lights? You bet. When solar activity is high, you’ll head out in search of them on foot and by boat across the iceberg-clogged fjord on this well-curated five-day tour, which includes return flights, four-star accommodation, meals, transfers and activities.

6. Canada northern lights adventure, Discover the World

The aurora over the Yukon River in Canada (Alamy)

For the call of the wild and the northern lights rippling in remote night skies, the Yukon in Canada ’s far northwest is pure magic. Running from mid-November to March, this three-night trip bases you at a cosy log cabin at the Northern Lights Resort & Spa near Whitehorse, which lives up to its name with an impeccable aurora record and guides giving the inside scoop on the lights. You’ll get to give dogsledding and snowshoeing a whirl, and visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where moose, caribou and bison roam. Given the length of the tour, you can easily combine it with another holiday to allow more time to explore this vast region. Prices include accommodation, meals, activities, winter clothing rental and transfers.

7. Romantic aurora adventure, Not in the Guidebooks

A glass-roofed aurora cabin in Finnish Lapland

If you don’t fancy a group tour, this privately organised three-night break to Finnish Lapland keeps things nicely intimate. At the Arctic heights of Saariselka, Levi or Pyha, impressive northern lights are pretty much a dead cert if solar activity is high. The “romance” in the name isn’t just hype: you’ll stay in a glass-roofed aurora cabin, with staggering views of any fireworks overhead. A Finnish sauna and massage get you relaxed before diving into the wilds by snowmobile, husky sled or reindeer sleigh. The clincher, though, is heading out across the snowy fells for a three-course dinner by an open fire, where with any luck the lights will appear.

Group size private (priced per couple) Price ££

8. Northern lights & Arctic adventure break, Newmarket Holidays

Newmarket Holidays’ trip includes a husky safari

With its ice shard-shaped Arctic Cathedral, stellar track record for aurora action and views of the snow-frosted Lyngen Alps, Tromso is your base for this cracking three-night adventure. The flexible itinerary is sprinkled with optional activities from dogsledding to snowmobiling and encounters with local Sami reindeer herders. But it’s the northern lights that really wow in Norway’s Arctic capital, and you’ll have excellent chances of seeing them on an excursion to an aurora base station, where hot drinks by a campfire (weather permitting) and, hopefully, a phenomenal light show await.

Group size 15-30 Price £

9. The complete Abisko experience, Aurora Nights

Abisko Mountain Lodge in Sweden (Abisko Mountain Lodge)

Bang in the centre of the aurora oval and crowned by Mount Nuolja and its Aurora Sky Station, Abisko in Swedish Lapland is right up there with the best places to see the lights in the world. This four-night trip, running from December to March, is full-on Arctic fantasy stuff. Nights are spent in a family-run wilderness lodge and days and evenings snowmobiling, snowshoeing and mastering northern lights photography in the white wilderness of Abisko National Park. Prices include accommodation, meals, transfers, guides and Arctic clothing.

10. The ultimate aurora adventure, Aurora Zone

The northern lights over Jukkasjarvi in Sweden (Lola Akinmade Akerstrom/imagebank.sweden.se)

Promising sky-gazing with a generous pinch of luxury, this eight-night trip to Swedish Lapland kicks off at remote Brandon Lodge on the fringes of the frosty Lulea archipelago, where you can ice-fish, snowmobile and see the lights perform in dark skies. It’s then onwards and northwards by train to the aurora heaven that is Abisko, with its crowning glory, Aurora Sky Station. Here, snowshoeing through the forest, dogsledding and an aurora-photography evening will fling you properly into the Arctic wilds. You’ll get to stay a night at Sweden ’s two most iconic winter escapes: in a floating river cabin at Arctic Bath on the Lulea River and in the Icehotel (the world’s first and largest of its kind). The tour runs from mid-December to mid-March and covers accommodation, meals, activities and cold-weather clothing.

Group size 2-24 Price £££

11. Snowshoeing in Finland, Exodus

Showshoeing in the wilds of Finland on an Exodus tour

Most tours actively “chase” the lights, but the sight of the aurora is even better when it comes as a total surprise — for instance, when it flickers across the sky as you pad through the snow in the hush of a winter’s night. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to make fresh tracks and see the lights come out to play on this seven-night break, focusing on a remote corner of Finnish Lapland far from the Santa-seeking crowds . The fells and forests in Oulanka and Riisitunturi are pure winter-wonderland stuff, and a sauna and snug night in a wilderness lodge await after a day of snow stomping. Prices include flights from London, tour leaders, equipment, accommodation, transport and most meals.

Group size 4-12 Price ££

12. Northern lights escape, Intrepid

In Iceland with Intrepid (Ryan Bolton)

This six-day romp through Iceland’s wildest reaches pretty much guarantees light shows — and in some of the most staggering landscapes imaginable. Starting and ending in Reykjavik, the tour hooks onto the Golden Circle route, looping together the country’s greatest natural wonders: first up is Unesco world heritage site Thingvellir National Park, birthplace of Iceland, where you can walk in wonder in a seismic rift valley dividing two continents. From here it’s on to the Geysir geothermal area, where geysers boil and blow. The final days weave along the south coast, via lava fields and black-sand beaches, to the crash-bang Skogafoss falls, iceberg-sprinkled Jokulsarlon lagoon and Vatnajokull, Europe’s biggest ice cap. There are frequent departures from late October to March, and prices cover accommodation with breakfast, transport and activities.

Group size maximum 1-12 Price ££

13. Northern lights and natural spa break, Aurora Zone

The northern lights over Iceland (lost in iceland)

If blasting through the snow on a snowmobile or skis sounds way too active, this three-night trip to Iceland moves to a distinctly mellower, wellness-focused beat. Relax: you won’t be hunting the northern lights, they’ll come to you as you’re floating in the healing waters of the Blue Lagoon, cocktail in hand, bubbling in hot springs with astonishing views of dark skies, or drifting in the geothermal infinity pool at the Sky Lagoon, overlooking the storm-whipped north Atlantic. Accommodation, transfers, guided activities and some meals are included.

Group size 2-25 Price £

14. East Greenland and Iceland northern lights, Intrepid

As the price tag reflects, this 14-day trip is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to the vast, lonely wilds of Iceland and east Greenland, just as the northern lights begin their dance in September’s ever-darkening skies. Kicking off in Reykjavik, you’ll spend 12 nights on an expedition ship, with Zodiac boats chugging out to glacier-licked, iceberg-filled nooks and crannies for prime wildlife spotting opportunities (keep an eye out for Arctic hares and musk oxen). Unforgettable moments include exploring Iceland’s remote, rivetingly beautiful Westfjords and Greenland’s Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest fjord, where mountains and dramatically sculpted icebergs razor above glassy waters. Prices include accommodation, meals and transport.

Group size 1-132 Price £££

15. Senja Island auroras, Aurora Zone

The northern lights over Senja (Reiner Schaufler)

The Lofoten Islands get all the fuss, but the mountainous, fjord-streaked, sea-battered island of Senja, just north, is just as surreally beautiful, yet receives just a trickle of the tourist traffic. This four-night trip is a rare and special one. You’ll stay in a tiny, lighthouse-topped hamlet right by the water’s edge, with optimum conditions for seeing the northern lights cascade in dark night skies. By day, a wildlife boat safari will take you out to spot seals, sea eagles and perhaps even a whale. And you’ll have plentiful chances to glimpse the aurora — whether snowshoeing through the white wilderness or relaxing in a hot tub. Prices include accommodation, meals, transfers, guided activities and cold-weather gear.

Group size 2-24 Price ££

16. Astronomy and northern lights expedition cruise, Hurtigruten

Watching the northern lights with Hurtigruten (Orjan Bertelsen)

The night sky is illuminated with startling clarity courtesy of onboard lectures about the northern lights, the solar system and the Arctic from astronomer Tom Kerss on this epic 15-day trip aboard Hurtigruten’s MS Maud. You’ll set sail in Dover and cruise along the fjord-riven coast of Norway to North Cape at 71 degrees north, where reindeer graze and the Barents Sea rages. And the aurora? Expect it to shine brightly thanks to minimal light pollution at sea. Meals and a range of excursions are included.

17. Northern lights ‘Coast & Ice’ photography holiday in Iceland, Responsible Travel

A photographer gets Iceland in focus (Wild Photography Holidays)

Even expert photographers know there’s an art to capturing the aurora in full sway — fickle and flighty as it is. But this ten-day photography holiday to Iceland helps you nail that perfect northern lights shot, with workshops on everything from exposure to composition, post-processing chats and viewing sessions. The trip zooms in on two staggeringly scenic locations: the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in the west, with its thrillingly wild coastline and distinctive mountains, and southeast Iceland, where you’ll take in the frozen majesty of Skaftafell National Park, the iceberg-filled Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Hvannadalshnjukur, Iceland’s highest peak. Accommodation, transfers and tuition are included. Tours run in February, September and October.

18. Humpbacks and huskies under the aurora in Norway, Much Better Adventures

A lobtailing humpback in Norway

This three-night escapade in Arctic Norway has a ring of proper adventure to it — and it delivers. Starting in Tromso, you’ll board a boat to sail across a fjord buttressed by snow-cloaked mountains in search of the orcas and humpbacks that breach, blow and lobtail here in winter. You’ll also get the chance to drive huskies across the frozen tundra and paddle Tromso’s icy waters, hopefully with impressive light shows. Run by eco-conscious experts, the trip runs from November to January and includes four-star hotel accommodation, guides, skippers, mushers and some meals.

20. Husky sled and northern lights expedition, Much Better Adventures

Get pulled by your own team of huskies in Norway

With a dash of the properly intrepid about it, this expedition, beginning in Alta, takes you well and truly off the beaten track across northern Norway’s remote, insanely beautiful and very, very dark Finnmark plateau — pulled by your own team of run-hungry huskies. You’ll soon slip into the rhythm of mushing, relishing the freedom of making fresh tracks through the glittering snow, with the aurora perhaps staging a spontaneous appearance. The three-night trip runs from January to April and includes accommodation in a tepee with wood-burning stove and mountain cabin, most meals, transfers, guides and equipment.

21. Northern lights short break, Responsible Travel

Skiing on the short break tour

Some might say that the longer you linger for the right conditions for the northern lights, the better, but even on a short four-day break like this one, the odds of spotting them are extraordinarily high in the far north of Finnish Lapland. All is wondrously white around Lake Inari, your base for watching the aurora flash away, as well as a flurry of winter activities from husky-sledding to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice-fishing. The clincher? You’ll get to spend a night in an aurora bubble, a transparent igloo with sensational views of the lights. Accommodation, meals, winter clothing and transfers to and from Ivalo are covered. There are daily departures between mid-January and mid-April.

Group size small Price ££

22. Hike, snowmobile and wild camp through Svalbard in winter, Much Better Adventures

An Arctic fox in Svalbard

At 78 degrees north, Svalbard is the last stop before the North Pole. This six-night tour, running in March and April, takes a headfirst dive into the archipelago’s silent, snowy wilderness, when the sun glares on the horizon after its long winter absence. The northern lights shimmer most nights when clear weather prevails and solar activity is high. You’ll need to be fit for this physically demanding trip, which gives you a true sense of being a polar explorer: traversing glaciers, pulling your gear on a pulka (sled), delving into ice caves, and camping and keeping watch for polar bears. Prices include accommodation, guides, transfers and some meals and equipment. Bring your own winter gear, sleeping bag and rucksack.

All of the key ingredients that need to come together for you to see the aurora borealis are present in both Swedish and Finnish Lapland. These include high latitudes, long winter nights and low light pollution.

*Please note that, even in Lapland, the northern lights can’t be guaranteed as they are a natural phenomenon.

4. WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE IN LAPLAND TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

You can see the northern lights anywhere in Lapland as long as the skies are dark enough and there are low levels of light pollution

Head to Lapland’s remote landscapes for the best chance of spotting the aurora. These wide-open spaces are not only great for chasing the aurora, but are also perfect for enjoying a range of winter excursions. You could go on a reindeer safari, or ride a snowmobile across snow-blanketed plains.

Stay in one of the best places to see the northern lights in Lapland on one of our tours. These locations have been chosen for their fun winter excursions, expert guides and best chances of seeing the northern lights.

Finnish Lapland Here are the best places to go in Finnish Lapland:

  • Santa Claus Village

Thankfully you don’t have to go as far north as Lake Inari to see the northern lights in Finland. Slightly further south, you’ll find Rovaniemi, one of the top aurora hunting locations in Finnish Lapland.

Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, is renowned as the “official hometown” of Santa Claus. As a large town, Rovaniemi does experience some light pollution. However, this is just the perfect excuse to venture into the surrounding countryside on a northern lights excursion.

Swedish Lapland These are the top places to visit in Swedish Lapland:

  • Abisko National Park
  • Aurora Sky Station

Kiruna and Abisko National Park are the best places to go in search of the northern lights in Swedish Lapland.

Kiruna is the hub of Swedish Lapland, and is also Sweden’s northernmost town. Its high latitude makes it a great spot for aurora hunting. Like Finnish Lapland, you’ll find that there are plenty of winter activities to choose from here. You can also enjoy a unique stay at the ICEHOTEL, the first of its kind in the world.

Alternatively, head to Abisko National Park and stay in a wilderness hotel. From here you can visit the Aurora Sky Station, which serves delicious gourmet meals and offers northern lights tours. You can also rent snowshoes to explore the countryside at your own pace.

Top tip:  Abisko National Park is so remote that there is hardly any light pollution at all, increasing your chances of seeing the northern lights.

5. WHERE TO STAY IN LAPLAND TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

In Lapland you can choose from an array of out-of-the-ordinary accommodation options.

Some special experiences include overnighting in aurora cabins with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the snow-laden landscape. You could even view the northern lights from your bed if you stay in one of the region’s domed glass igloos.

Alternatively, enjoy a stay in one of these “cool” hotels on a Lapland ice or snow hotel tour :

  • ICEHOTEL near Kiruna
  • Arctic SnowHotel near Rovaniemi

To make sure you don’t miss out on seeing the aurora, even after you have gone to bed, many hotels in Lapland offer an aurora alarm service. This means that you can choose to get a call to your room should the northern lights make an appearance.

6. HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN LAPLAND?

The northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so unfortunately they won’t always appear when you’d like them to. However, there are things that you can do to increase your chances of spotting them.

These are our top tips for seeing the northern lights in Lapland:

  • Visit from December to March, the darkest winter months.
  • Head to the Arctic Circle – the “northern lights belt” between latitudes of 65-72°N is best.
  • Seek low levels of light pollution by getting out of town.
  • Book onto northern lights excursions in the snow with a knowledgeable guide.
  • Check the daily weather and aurora forecasts so you know when the northern lights are most likely to appear.

  • Practise patience while waiting for the lights to make an appearance.
  • Learn what your camera’s best settings for capturing the action are before you travel.

7. WHICH IS BEST FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS HUNTING: ICELAND OR LAPLAND?

Happily, the northern latitudes of Iceland and Lapland make them both great places for seeing the northern lights. However, each has its own distinct character, which may mean you’d prefer to visit one over the other. The choice is down to your personal preference.

Located in the Arctic Circle, in the northern reaches of mainland Europe, Lapland can be a tranquil place to chase the aurora. In this winter wonderland, you can visit Father Christmas and ride through snow-blanketed forests in a husky or reindeer-drawn sled.

Found just south of the Arctic Circle, Iceland’s remote landscapes mean that it enjoys low levels of light pollution. This, combined with dark winter skies, make it another top spot for glimpsing the northern lights.

In Iceland you can enjoy jaw-dropping scenery, including volcanoes, black sand beaches and glacier lagoons. You can also bathe in geothermal pools, venture into ice caves and experience the vibrant capital city of Reykjavík.

Aurora Expeditions™

An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky.

The Aurora Borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. It is most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic and Antarctica, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all.

To increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, be prepared to venture into the heart of the Arctic, to destinations such as Greenland, Iceland, Northern Canada and Northern Norway. While aurora activity happens year-round, the best time to witness the Northern Lights is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer.

Why Join a Northern Lights Cruise with Aurora Expeditions?

First, what is this strange natural phenomenon? An aurora is a natural light display that can appear as brilliant green, yellow, red, blue and purple light patterns, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the night sky. The aurora borealis originates on the sun’s surface with a massive explosion of electromagnetic matter, which projects a stream of charged particles known as solar wind into space. When these particles approach Earth a few nights later, they distort our magnetic field. The excited, ionised atoms that enter our atmosphere through the poles emit light which, when emitted on a large scale, causes the phenomenon of the Southern and Northern Lights. Northern Lights experiences are best with a dark sky as the aurora is not strong enough to outshine the sunlight.

There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. This is why Aurora Expeditions’ Northern Lights tours don’t focus on one spot or location. The Northern Lights are most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’. It’s important to understand that this oval-shaped halo can shift slightly, and there are many factors at play, like weather conditions and clear nights, that affect how bright the lights appear or if it’s possible to see them at all so our Northern Lights tour reflects this.

While aurora borealis activity happens year-round, the best time for a Northern Lights adventure is during the long winter months, when the windows for viewing them each night are longer and the skies darker. The season in the Northern Hemisphere is generally from September through April.

Unique Northern Lights Experiences

Our Northern Lights cruise sticks to the aurora zone in the Arctic Circle, but seeing the lights dance is only one part of your Northern Lights adventure. Exploring the polar regions provides you with opportunities like no other.

By night you will seek out the Northern Lights, but by day we will try to get you off the ship 2-3 times per day (depending on the weather and conditions) so you can get the most out of your time in the Arctic. Walking and bird-watching are popular activities as they offer a chance to witness the unique wildlife in the destinations you visit.

Take a polar plunge in the icy waters of the Arctic Circle, or stay above the water on a Zodiac cruise through the fields of icebergs. Zodiac cruises allow you to get closer to some of the wildlife and landscapes you’ll see throughout your Northern Lights tour. If you have the necessary experience you should also consider adding sea kayaking to your Northern Lights itinerary.

Enrichment is an important component of our expeditions – we hope that you will leave changed and become lifelong ambassadors for the natural world and the wild, important destinations we visit. Your world-class Expedition Team will be on hand to answer your questions about the aurora borealis and how it comes to appear in the night sky, Arctic wildlife , geological formations and the history of the places we visit.

Northern Lights Cruise Regions

Greenland Northern Lights

While Greenland is one of the best countries in the world for witnessing the Northern Lights, getting there can be challenging and often what holds people back. The good news is that, once you’re there, you can see the Northern Lights from almost anywhere in the country – even in the heart of its capital city, Nuuk! This is because Greenland’s population is tiny and scattered across small, remote communities, so it has minimal light pollution. Not many Northern Lights tours go to Greenland but Aurora Expeditions Northern Lights cruises explore using a small expedition ship which makes it easy to visit the prime locations in Greenland to see the Northern Lights.

Some other superb options for aurora viewing in Greenland are Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Kulusuk and Tasiilaq.

Zodiac cruising in Svalbard

Svalbard Northern Lights

Every year, millions of tourists flock to the Arctic for a chance to witness the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. However, few venture to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, located between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole, which offers exceptional conditions to see the Northern Lights, not to mention dramatic fjords, rugged mountain ranges and a huge variety of unique wildlife, including majestic polar bears.

Northern Lights display over a frozen lake in northern Canada

Northern Lights Canada

Northern Canada is the best place to see the Northern Lights in Canada, in remote places with minimal light pollution. Nunavut in the heart of Canada’s High Arctic is a prime aurora borealis viewing country, with its close proximity to the North Pole and vast expanses of tundra. Consider visiting a remote traditional Inuit community for an unparalleled night of dazzling aurora displays.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland

Northern Lights Iceland

Aside from volcanoes, glaciers and geysers, one of the main reasons people have Iceland on their travel bucket list is because they dream of seeing the Northern Lights on display. Iceland is a sparsely populated country, so you don’t have to go far to get away from light pollution.

With longer hours with dark skies and clear night skies, the Westfjords and North Iceland are the best regions to head to if you want to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. There are many fantastic remote locations in South Iceland where you can witness the aurora, including the popular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The Seltjarnarnes peninsula is a prime viewing area as there is minimal light pollution. There are also plenty of places near Reykjavík you can head to if you’re short on time, including Thingvellir National Park.

Northern Lights display in the Lofted Islands in Norway

Northern Lights Norway

Norway is often the first country that comes to mind when people think of the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are a prominent feature of the night sky throughout the country and have even influenced folklore and indigenous culture. Because Norway is so long, the seasons change at different times, with summer lasting longer in the south and winter lasting longer in the north. As a rule of thumb, the further north you go, the longer your window is for seeing them.

The ‘auroral zone’ starts in Northern Norway just above the Lofoten Islands and extends up the coast to the North Cape (Nordkapp) and beyond. You will observe the same light display from anywhere in this region, but from a different angle. Some of our favourite places in Northern Norway to witness the Northern Lights include Tromsø, Kirkenes, the Lofoten Islands, Bodø and the North Cape.

Northern Lights Cruise Activities

See The Northern Lights with Aurora Expeditions and our Expedition Team will take you on excursions unique to the High Arctic, fully included in the cost of your expedition. For those interested in a little extra excitement, there are optional activities designed to get you closer to the action. Our Northern Lights expeditions provide a mix of comfort and adventure; for those willing to explore the Arctic the memories will last a lifetime.

How can I travel to the Northern Lights region in Northern Europe?

The Northern lights tours typically take place above the Arctic Circle across the 50 Degrees North region. Flying in the Nordic region during winter is safe and convenient and winter conditions do not prevent flying or landing. As icy and snowy conditions in the far north are nothing unusual, airports are well prepared, and de-icing equipment is readily available. The industry is well regulated, planes are safe and pilots are very experienced in flying in all weather. There is no airport in Scandinavia without a convenient public transport connection to the nearest city.

Usually your first step is to get a flight to the capital city of Finland (Helsinki), Sweden (Stockholm) or Norway (Oslo) and either fly to a smaller town in Lapland - the nearest one to where you will be staying - or catch the local trains to the north. For example, you can catch an overnight train with a sleeping berth from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, arriving to the Arctic Circle in the morning. This is a very authentic way of travel, but not adviced if you're on a tight schedule.

When can you join a Northern Lights tour?

Many Northern lights tours operate from August to April, however most of the tours offered are from November until April when it is darker and colder in the region. If you have any time during these months available to travel, we would recommend later in the season when you have longer daylight hours for activities.

When should you book a Northern Lights tour?

Doing a Northern lights tour has been exceptionally popular recently with the Solar Maximum producing some of the most intense displays in over a decade. We suggest booking at least three to six months earlier to secure the best the region has to offer. Many of the hotels have built new facilities designed specifically with the Northern lights viewing in mind, such as the Glass Igloos in Kakslauttanen , Glass Igloos in Levi and the new chalets in Kirkenes.

We suggest you plan your itinerary with some Northern Lights excursions (such as snow mobiling or minivan tours) and then once you have arrived at your accommodation, you can add some more of these excursions if the conditions are right. Most tour operators will have some flexibility on a day-to-day basis as the weather conditions make a big difference to your success in seeing the Northern Lights.

Are there any day/night tours to see the Northern Lights that I can join?

There are a variety of different options to see the Northern lights within a tailor made Aurora lights tour. If you want to do a Northern lights tour in Norway, you can base yourself in one of the cities above the Arctic Circle and join evening trips that search for the Northern lights. Typically, the drivers and guides will research the weather forecast and the Aurora prediction websites each evening and will drive to the area most likely to show the aurora. A warm van, hot chocolates and sometimes an open fire, will keep you happy and cozy during the search.

Our region also offers many accommodation options designed to provide you comfortable ways to see the Northern lights. Positioned high up on a mountain in Sweden, the Abisko Aurora Sky station offers a viewing area and museum combined with a restaurant to enjoy at the same time. Abisko has a unique micro-climate which keeps the skies clear - ideal for seeing the lights!

Likewise, the patio and Jacuzzi at Lyngen Lodge, Norway or the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyage deck and jacuzzi offer a great ‘bucket list’ spot to see the lights.

Similarly, perch yourself on a bar stool in the ION hotel in Iceland. This fabulous architecturally designed country hotel with huge foyer windows is a dramatic place to witness the Northern lights spectacle away from artificial light.

Are there any group tours to see the Northern Lights that I can join?

We offer several small group tours designed to see the Northern lights. In Iceland, there are several different small group coach tours that are designed around seeing the Northern Lights from Iceland's iconic spots.

This Norwegian Coastal (Kystruten) voyage and tour, Chase the Northern Lights , runs regularly during winter and is exclusive to 50 Degrees North. Fully escorted for the entire tour, this tour travels from Helsinki, to Rovaniemi and then down the Norwegian coast.

Can you predict if I will see the Northern Lights on my tour?

There are two kinds of Northern lights predictions: statistical and real-time ones. The former are based on a large amount of observations of Northern lights at different latitudes during several years. From these statistics we can say what is the probability of the occurrence of Northern lights during the course of year.

According to the statistics compiled by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, four nights out of five are illuminated by Northern lights in Northern Lapland (Kilpisjärvi-Utsjoki area) providing that the sky is free enough from clouds . On the coast of the Arctic Ocean in North Norway (e.g. in Tromsö) one can see Northern lights almost every night. Even in South Finland, for example in Helsinki, one can see them but much more seldom; in Helsinki only one night out of 20.

Remember, the occurrence of auroras depends on the latitude, so be sure to look Northwards for the lights. We always suggest staying in the Aurora Zone long enough for storms (i.e clouds) to pass. And just in case you haven't realised, during summer months you cannot see any aurora due to light nights (up to 24 hrs of light, i.e. the Midnight Sun). Generally, the best time to see auroras is between 9pm and 1am local time.

NOTE: The auroras come in lots of different shades and strengths. Some nights, you will be dazzled by brilliant lights whilst other nights, it is a dull hazy green, hard to see and rather vague. Fingers crossed for one of the magical nights!!

When the Earth's magnetic field is very disturbed, the auroras can spread all over Europe for a couple of hours.

To get more technical, the latter predictions are based on a space-weather monitoring system either by ground-based devices or satellites watching the space-weather conditions around the Earth. When the monitoring devices (e.g., magnetometers or particle detectors in a satellite) show certain deviations from the normal situation, one can expect that a space weather storm is approaching in a few hours.

The skill of real-time predictions is, unfortunately, rather low as we cannot make predictions for several days like forecasting normal weather. The reason for this shortcoming is that we do not fully understand the complicated processes, starting from the Sun and ending in the near-space of the Earth, involved in the cosmic ignition of the Northern lights. Therefore, more space-research is needed for better forecasts. For further information about the Northern Lights, refer to this Spaceweather website.

Northern Lights Tours

Item 1

Seeing the Northern Lights

It is many people’s wish to experience for themselves the fantastic celestial phenomenon of the Northern Lights. Caused by particles from the sun disrupting the upper atmosphere and exciting atoms in the sky, it is an ephemeral, unpredictable and thrilling marvel of nature. One moment there might be a faint green glow on the horizon, the next minute there can be pulsating ribbons of green, magenta or even red light spreading across the sky. Every display is unique!

Auroral activity can be seen throughout the long, far northern winter, but it can be variable. At Naturetrek, we combine looking out for Aurora Borealis, as Galileo called it, with daytime searches for wildlife, ranging from winter birdlife to cruises for whale watching .

7 of the Best Northern Lights Cruises

Set sail on these itineraries to try to spot the aurora borealis.

northern light tours uk

If seeing the northern lights , also known as the aurora borealis, is on your travel list, you've probably already looked into the best places to see them : northern destinations like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland , and Scandinavia among them. But have you ever considered visiting those destinations by sea rather than land? Many cruise lines not only offer itineraries to those regions but also offer northern lights-specific sailings, too. Cruising is particularly appealing for northern lights seekers because the ships can access remote areas without light pollution, allowing guests to see the aurora in its full brilliance. So if you haven't yet seen the northern lights — or if you're looking to see them again — here are seven northern lights cruises to help you accomplish your goal.

Viking: In Search of the Northern Lights

RelaxFoto.de/Getty Images

Over the course of 13 days, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests from London to Amsterdam , then all the way up the coast of Norway and north of the Arctic Circle, before returning back south to the Norwegian city of Bergen. (Although some sailings operate in reverse.) The Norwegian fjords themselves are a sight to behold — and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better! The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, making for prime aurora opportunities. Rates start from $4,999 per person in 2023, and it should be noted that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

Aurora Expeditions: Northern Lights Explorer

Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a northern lights itinerary. At 19 to 22 days long, depending on the departure, there is plenty of time to hope for a northern lights appearance — or two, or three, or more. The sailings start in the northern Norwegian city of Kirkenes before sailing south along the coast, heading back north to the remote archipelago of Jan Mayen (a polar bear hotspot), over to the scenic fjords of East Greenland, and around the northern half of Iceland. The longer itinerary continues with a visit to the Faroe Islands and disembarkation in Bergen, Norway. Aurora offers just one of these sailings per year in September. Rates start from $19,705.50 per person in 2023.

Hurtigruten: The Classic Roundtrip Voyage

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. But the routes of this coastal ferry company in Norway just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora. In fact, Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (Sept. 26 through March 31) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company will give you a free six- or seven-day cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip itinerary from Bergen up the coast of Norway and back. Rates start from $2,309 per person in 2023.

Quark Expeditions: Under the Northern Lights

Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall. These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. As the majority of the voyage takes place above the Arctic Circle, the odds of seeing the northern lights are high, especially as solar activity tends to peak around the autumnal and vernal equinoxes in September and March, respectively. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Rates start from $8,501 per person in 2023.

Oceanwide Expeditions: East Greenland Scoresby Sund - Aurora Borealis

If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-day aurora borealis sailings from Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri, the unofficial capital of north Iceland, before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world. If you do have a little more time, you can opt for the 13-day Spitsbergen - Northeast Greenland - Aurora Borealis itinerary, which embarks in the Svalbard archipelago before sailing to Greenland and down to Iceland. Both take place in the late summer into early fall, as darkness returns to the skies in the Arctic. Rates for the eight-day itinerary start from $4,600 per person for the 2023 sailings.

Cunard: Norway and Northern Lights

Each fall, one or two of the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-day itineraries depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Haugesund, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from October to November, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear. In 2023, the voyage will be undertaken by Queen Victoria , while next season, the Queen Mary 2 and the upcoming Queen Anne will take the reins. Rates start from $1,689 per person in 2023.

P&O: Norway

The most affordable option on this list, British cruise line P&O operates 12-day sailings to Norway year-round, but during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far north as Tromsø, well north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck — which you should do anyway to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon. Rates start from $1,385 per person in 2023.

Solar eclipse 2024: A traveller’s guide to the best places to be when the light goes out

I n four weeks, on 8 April 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America , providing an astronomical experience in many alluring locations.

Only a tiny proportion of humanity has ever witnessed a total eclipse – but tens of millions of people will be able to experience one as the “path of totality” sweeps from the Pacific to the Atlantic during the course of that magical Monday.

Here’s what you need to know about why you should see it and where to be.

What happens during a total solar eclipse?

The greatest show on earth comes courtesy of the lifeless moon. Normally the orbiting lunar lump merely provides earth with tides, moonlight and somewhere to aim space rockets. But roughly once a year the natural satellite aligns with the sun and, thanks to a geometric miracle, blots out the hub of the solar system to create a total eclipse.

“Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, it’s also about 400 times closer to earth than the sun is,” says Nasa. “This means that from earth, the moon and the sun appear to be roughly the same size in the sky.”

A narrow band marking the “path of totality” carves an arc of darkness across the surface of our planet. If you are somewhere on that line at the predicted time, and you have clear skies, then the experience will become a lifelong memory.

The closer you are to the centre of the path of totality, the longer the total eclipse will last.

What’s so good about seeing an eclipse?

After a warm-up lasting more than an hour, during which the moon steadily nibbles away at the surface of the sun, you suddenly experience totality. The stars and planets appear in the middle of the day. The air chills.

To testify to the heavenly fit between our two most familiar heavenly bodies, faint diamonds known as Baily’s beads peek out from behind the moon. They actually comprise light from the sun slipping through lunar valleys.

A sight to behold – so long as you can see the moon blotting out the sun and appreciate the mathematical perfection of nature in our corner of the galaxy.

Eclipses are entirely predictable: we know the stripes that the next few dozen will paint upon the surface of the Earth. But the weather is not. Cloud cover, which blighted the Cornwall eclipse in 1999, downgrades a cosmological marvel to gloom.

Where will the great American eclipse 2024 be visible?

The path of totality makes landfall from the Pacific at Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific Coast and sweeps northeastwards to reach the US-Mexican border at Piedras Negras.

Big Texan cities – San Antonio, Austin and Dallas – are on the extremes of the path of totality; many citizens are likely to drive to locations near the centre of the line.

Arkansas will be an attractive place to see the eclipse , with both Texarkana (on the border with Texas) and Little Rock within the path of totality.

In the Midwest, Indianapolis and Cleveland share the distinction of being fairly central in the path of totality. In upstate New York, Buffalo and Niagara Falls could be extremely attractive – though prone in early April to cloudy skies.

In Canada , Montreal is just touched by the path of totality. The line then reverts to the US, passing across northern Maine – which would be a superb location were the weather good. Then back to Canada’s Maritime Provinces, with New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland all in the line of darkness.

I’d rather be in a more exciting city – will they get a partial eclipse?

Boston, New York and Chicago are among the big cities that will see a sizeable chunk of the sun blotted out; but there is nothing to compare with a total eclipse.

The astronomer Dr John Mason, who has guided dozens of eclipse trips (and will be doing so again in 2024) sums up the difference between a 99.5 per cent partial eclipse and a total eclipse as far apart as “a peck on the cheek and a night of passion”.

You must use special eclipse safety glasses or viewers when viewing a partial eclipse or during the partial phases of a total solar eclipse.

Where should I be for the total experience?

There are no guarantees of clear skies: all you can do is play the odds based on the record of cloud cover for the corresponding date in previous years.

Dr Mason says the average expected cloud cover amounts increase from around 40-45 per cent on the Mexico/Texas border to over 80 per cent in Maine, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Three particularly tempting locations:

  • Southern Texas , close to San Antonio or Austin. Besides clear skies being more likely than not, access is easy with direct flights to Austin. Importantly there is much to explore in the region before and after the eclipse, from Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande to Space Center Houston – an excellent place to continue the cosmological theme.
  • Northern Arkansas , a picturesque part of the state, with the added attraction of Memphis just a couple of hours away.
  • Niagara Falls : it could be a washout due to clouds, but the natural surroundings are impeccable – and there is plenty of hotel accommodation. In addition, access from Toronto is easy thanks to a direct two-hour train connection, removing the risk of severe traffic congestion on the freeways.

If you are in a remote location, you may need a hotel close to the site. Almost as predictable as the eclipse is that traffic to and from the path of totality is going to be heavy on the nights of 7-8 April 2024.

Rooms are likely to be expensive; during the 2017 US eclipse a midrange hotel in Jackson, Wyoming, was charging over $1,000 for the crucial night before.

When are the next total solar eclipses?

Summer 2026 – Wednesday 12 August, to be precise – should bring a spectacular eclipse visible in northern Spain at the height of the European holiday season. The path of totality begins in the Arctic and crosses Greenland and Iceland before arriving in the northern half of Spain. The stripe of darkness will traverse the great cities of Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia in mainland Spain before arriving in Palma de Mallorca.

The following summer (2 August 2027), the southern tip of mainland Spain is in the path of totality for an eclipse that will sweep across North Africa and the Arabian peninsula : going east from the Strait of Gibraltar, it will encompass Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, the northeasternmost corner of Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Just under 12 months later, on 22 July 2028, Outback Australia will be the place to be. A total eclipse will make landfall in northern Western Australia, sweep across the Northern Territory and part of southwest Queensland – then clean across New South Wales, with Sydney in the middle of the path of totality.

Winter cloud cover could disrupt the experience in Australia’s largest city – and is very likely in the southern portion of New Zealand’s South Island where the eclipse reaches a finale.

Australia also features in the cosmological plans on 25 November 2030. This is early summer in the southern hemisphere, and likely to be good conditions for viewing in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Durban is on the path of totality) as well as South Australia.

The cost of living crisis has not slowed London's prime property boom.

A total of 54 properties in the capital sold for £15m or more last year, costing their buyers a combined £1.3bn.

Many of these properties are "invisible" to the average buyer - never making it to sites like Zoopla or Rightmove, and instead becoming part of an almost underground market accessible only to the super rich and in-the-know.

Marc Schneiderman, founder of luxury estate agency Arlington Residential, knows all about this market.

Super rich buyers will often have family offices (private wealth advisory firms) running the sale process, he says, along with top lawyers, surveyors, architects and designers - all of whom will be on standby and able to get to the property "very quickly".

It's often these teams who will approach estate agents or selling agents with specifics on what the super rich buyer is looking for - which can sometimes mean finding a property on a particular sought-after street.

In some cases, estate agents might be asked to approach the owners of properties to find out if they're willing to sell - and while this works "infrequently", it can help if the potential buyer is well-known.

Specific requests

"I've had a request recently from somebody with a car collection who wants to house that underground," Mr Schneiderman says.

This isn't too easy to find in central London, but he says there are a "few houses" in the Hampstead area.

Another tricky request is from somebody who wants a tennis court - "that's quite hard to find in certain parts of London" - and another who needs a recording studio, ideally in a separate building at the bottom of the garden.

Simon Tollit, partner at luxury selling agency Tedworth Property, says there is a "very large market" that is "invisible and off-market to the majority".

He reckons about half of luxury properties - those valued at about £10m-plus - will never end up on websites.

"That's where a buying agent or family office will prove their worth because they have a relationship with people like us," he says.

The properties likely to get snapped up the quickest are known in the business as "triple A" homes.

Mr Tollit says that in London these might be the white porticoed properties on Eaton Square, in Belgravia, a period house in Chelsea, or a townhouse on Chester Square.

Wealthy buyers will often be looking for lateral apartments, a big roof terrace, high ceilings, a good outlook and lots of entertaining space.

There is still "great demand" for these places - as Mr Tollit points out, London is not growing in terms of prime housing stock.

But despite what many might expect, he says he has found dealing with the super rich "actually quite straightforward".

"They are super, super successful, know exactly what they're looking for, and are clinical in terms of not wasting their time," he says.

While security is often a big factor for the super rich, he says some of the wealthiest people are "super discreet" - "they can walk down the road and you wouldn't bat an eyelid".

"Some of the wealthiest people I've worked with and sold properties to are very unassuming. Literally you wouldn't know that they had two pennies to rub together," Mr Tollit says.

The minimum wage is going up on 1 April - and on the face of it, for workers and their pockets, that can only be a good thing.

But analysts at Capital Economics have warned "a clear risk" is the rise keeps wage growth, and in turn inflation, high - and could "keep the Bank of England on alert" over the need to delay interest rate cuts.

How much is the minimum wage rising?

The national living wage (what the minimum wage is generally called) will rise from £10.42 to £11.44 per hour from next month - up 9.8%.

It's also being expanded to include 21 and 22 year olds.

The minimum wage rate is also going up for younger people. Those aged 18 to 20 will get at least £8.60 an hour from April - a bump of £1.11. For those 16 and 17, and apprentices, the minimum pay will be £6.40 - a rise of £1.12 on last year.

Potential consequences

Wage growth is one of the factors the Bank of England considers when deciding whether to cut interest rates - as rates can only fall when inflation is under control (high rates are used to lower inflation by squeezing the economy).

The Bank has predicted the minimum wage hike will add 0.3% to wage growth.

Analysts aren't yet convinced of the threat this poses to inflation but Capital Economics does warn...

"There is a clear risk that the rise in the minimum wage supports wage growth by a bit more than we expect and/or businesses pass on more of the resulting rise in their costs in their selling prices. This is unlikely to stop wage growth and the various measures of domestic inflation from falling further. But it may slow the pace of decline.

"Overall, the Bank of England has indicated that if wage growth and measures of domestic inflation were to ease in line with its forecast, it will be in a position to cut interest rates at some point this year.

"Our view remains that wage growth and domestic inflation will fall faster than the Bank is forecasting, which may prompt the Bank to cut rates in June. But a bigger upward influence from the rise in the minimum wage could be one reason why that first interest rate cut comes a bit later."

Gold has been trading at record levels - so we've re-upped a post from January about whether it's a good investment for the average Briton.

First though, an explanation of why gold is up from Ricardo Evangelista, a senior analyst at ActivTrades.

He said: "Concerns surrounding global economic prospects, geopolitical tensions, and shifting expectations towards earlier interest rate cuts have fuelled increased demand for the precious metal, leading to its upward price trajectory."

So, should you be investing in gold?

Those considering gold should be less interested in this short-term figure, and more in treating gold "like a pension", Ross Norman, chief executive of Metals Daily, told the Money team.

And there are reasons - ranging from interest rates to coups - why some investors "wouldn't touch it with a long pole", according to Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell.

'Don't bother reading gold in the short term'

These two types of buyers tend to hold the metal for longer periods of time, making gold a "resilient" investment that usually rights itself in the long term, Mr Norman says.

But in the short-term, there are many influences on its value when compared with metals like copper, which are more clearly linked to supply and demand, he says.

Uncertainty caused by geopolitical events is likely to affect gold prices this year, with wars in Ukraine and Gaza and 76 elections taking place across the world prompting nervous investors to stock up on gold.

Cuts to interest rates in the US could drive up the metal's value, though this depends on when and how fast.

"Don't bother to try and read gold in the short term - it's unreadable," Mr Norman says.

He said if you want to make a fortune or lose one then "go to the casino, go and buy bitcoin, but I think you buy gold with a different motivation in mind... you want to secure what you've got".

Predicting gold prices over the long term is much simpler because the fundamental rules of supply and demand become much more relevant, said Mr Norma.

This includes mining (supply) and the size of middle-classes in various nations (demand).

Pros and cons

"UK investors typically have homes as their go-to store of value. It's a cultural thing, and yet gold has massively out-performed housing on almost every front," Mr Norman says.

For those who can afford a second home, he says, gold offers an alternative that doesn't incur the same taxes, stamp duty or agents' fees - and doesn't take months to sell.

Mr Mould, of investment platform AJ Bell, says gold is "seen as a haven" from central bank and government policy, but there are reasons some investors won't touch it.

Gold produces no yield or cashflow - you can't earn interest on the metal like money in a bank, he says.

Mining companies are also "volatile", often difficult to manage and don't always meet expectations. They are subject to taxes, geological problems, nationalisation and even coups, he explains.

The material is also primarily a hedge against things going wrong, and if economies are starting to get a handle on inflation - and cut rates at the right pace so as not to drive them up again - the incentive to buy gold drops.

But at the same time, lower interest rates mean your banked cash isn't working for you as hard, reducing the opportunity cost of buying gold, he says.

Two big financial moments will play out next week - we'll hear February's inflation data on Wednesday (it's expected to have fallen from January's 4%) and the Bank of England's latest interest decision on Thursday (they're likely to be held, again, at 5.25%).

One of the factors the Bank will consider is wage growth - and while workers are happy this is high, economist concern themselves with how this could impact inflation (we'll have more on this in one of our Weekend Money posts shortly).

This week we learned that British wages, excluding bonuses, grew by 6.1% in the three months to the end of January compared with the same period a year earlier.

The Office for National Statistics figures mean Britons are seeing wages climb at a higher rate than inflation.

If high wages persist, and contribute towards further inflation, it could lead to caution in cutting interest rates - as the whole point of high interest rates is to curb inflation by squeezing the economy.

Although if you've been following the Money blog this week, you'll have read the chairman of M&S saying the Bank of England's actions have been "totally ineffective".

Archie Norman said: "What we've proved in the last three years is that monetary policy is totally ineffective.

"Putting up interest rates didn't actually slow the economy very much."

The top businessman and former Tory MP explained that inflation was driven by "global macro prices" and it "had no bearing on the price of gas" and "had no real bearing on the price of food".

"We probably sometimes listen a bit too much to central bankers," Mr Norman added.

"The impact of higher interest rates hasn't really materialised."

While the Bank considers when to start cutting rates (markets are still expecting a cut to 5% in June or August), we continue to see a mixed picture on the mortgage market.

The week started with four major lenders raising rates - before Coventry became the first big name to respond to falling swap rates (these dictate how much it costs for lenders to lend) by announcing reductions.

We will have to see if others follow but for now here's the current average rates...

Also this week, we were told the UK could be emerging from recession - as GDP grew by 0.2% in January. We need two more months of growth for the recession to be declared over.

If you want to read more on this, this analysis of what's going on with the UK economy by  data and economics editor Ed Conway   is well worth five minutes of you weekend...

Norfolk County Council has won a £384m payout from Apple after it claimed the company misled predictions about iPhone demand in China.

In 2018, Apple, its chief executive Tim Cook and its chief financial officer Luca Maestri were accused of misleading shareholders about iPhone demand in China.

Mr Cook had told investors that while Apple was seeing pressure in some emerging markets he did not believe demand would be down in China.

Yet two months later the company issued a profit warning blaming weak demand in China, something that caused an 8% drop in its share price.

Norfolk County Council claimed that Mr Cook must have known at the time that sales in China were starting to slow down.

The council claimed that this cost its pension fund almost $1m.

Now, after a five-year-lawsuit, Apple has agreed to pay shareholders the sum after settling with the council, The Telegraph reports.

The payout will be shared by investors who apply for damages and say they were affected by what they claim are misleading claims from Apple.

It is unclear how much the Norfolk pension fund itself will receive.

An average of 35,000 parking tickets are being issued by private companies to drivers every day - while the wait for new government legislation continues.

The RAC Foundation said many drivers could feel "badly let down" by the delay in ministers introducing a code of conduct aimed at eradicating some of the sector's worst practices - despite legislation being passed.

In all, 9.7 million tickets were issued to drivers by private parking companies across the UK between April and December last year - equivalent to nearly 35,300 every day.

Tickets can cost drivers up to £100 - with private parking businesses accused of using misleading and confusing signs, aggressive debt collection and unreasonable fees.

"We've not seen is the implementation of the protections MPs were queuing up to support when the Parking Act made its way onto the statute book all those years ago," Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said.

"What's needed is a swift dose of hurry-up treatment in this election year if those voters are not to be left feeling badly let down."

A new energy tariff offered by EDF on Uswitch is offering rates 18% below the current price cap - and 6.5% cheaper than the new cap introduced in April.

The 12-month fixed deal is the cheapest Uswtich has offered since October 2021 - costing £1,581 for households with average consumption.

It is £109 under than the April price cap, and is the cheapest energy-only fixed deal available across England, Wales and Scotland.

"Customers have been under the cosh from sky-high prices for years, so it’s a big step to see tariffs priced lower than the upcoming cap, and the cheapest we’ve seen since late 2021," Will Owen, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said.

"At £1,581 for the average household, this should be worth considering for those wanting to take advantage of falling rates and lock in price certainty for 12 months."

The Scottish seaside town of North Berwick in East Lothian has been named the best place to live in an annual guide run by The Sunday Times .

It is the first Scottish winner of the guide - which has been running for 12 years.

The judges said they were impressed by its easy connections to Edinburgh and the way life revolves around the town's beaches.

There's a range of independent shops and a wealth of activities for any ages.

The newspaper also named 10 regional winners:

  • East of England: Wivenhoe, Essex
  • London: Clerkenwell
  • Midlands: Stirchley, Birmingham
  • North and North East: Leeds
  • Northern Ireland: Portstewart, County Londonderry
  • North West: Stockport, Greater Manchester
  • Scotland: West End, Dundee
  • South East: Folkestone, Kent
  • South West: Sherborne, Dorset
  • Wales: Abergavenny, Monmouthshire

A new regular savings account paying 6.75% for "loyal" customers has been launched by a building society.

The loyalty regular saver account can only be opened by savers who have been members of Coventry Building Society since the start of last year.

The rate lasts for 12 months, after which it drops to 3.1% - with savers able to deposit up to £250 per month for the first year.

While withdrawals are allowed, they are subject to a charge equal to 30 days' interest on the amount withdrawn.

If you don't qualify - the building society is offering a regular savings account at 5%.
