LIV Golf and Asian Tour stars set to play "International Series England"

Lee Westwood of England pictured during the pro-am event on Wednesday February 1, 2023, ahead of the PIF Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers

Global golf stars are lining up to take on the ‘Toon’ at the acclaimed Close House in Newcastle for the US$2 million International Series England from August 17-20, 2023 .

Lee Westwood, the former world number one with 44 career victories – including eight on the Asian Tour – spearheads a cohort of 10 LIV golfers set to wow the crowds over the Colt Course, situated just a few miles from Newcastle upon Tyne.

Despite being born and raised in Worksop, and an ardent Nottingham Forest FC fan, ‘Westy’ moved to the region a number of years ago and struck up a long-standing partnership with Close House as its attached tour professional. Westwood said: “I’ve had the privilege of playing at home in tournament situations before, and there is truly nothing quite like it. Local excitement is building nicely with some of the players confirmed.” “I’ve been embraced by the people of Northumbria since I set up home there; their passion for sport is unrivalled and the full field will feel that during the tournament week – the atmosphere will be tremendous.”

The 7th Hole of Close House’s Colt Course, venue for the International Series England 2023.

Joining the Majesticks Team co-captain are 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed, 2010 U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell and this year’s PIF Saudi International victor Abraham Ancer. Like Ancer, whose most recent win netted a share of the US$5 million purse in Saudi Arabia, McDowell will be looking to improve on a single Asian Tour career victory, which came back in 2008 in South Korea. Seven-time Asian Tour winner and LIV Golf player, Anirban Lahiri, will also make his second International Series appearance of the year, following an impressive runner-up finish at the Vietnam event back in April. On that occasion it was Kieran Vincent who emerged victorious, somewhat following in the footsteps of older brother Scott, who earned a place in the 2023 LIV Golf League by topping The International Series 2022 Order of Merit (OOM). Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra and American Jason Kokrak also make International Series returns after teeing it up in the first event on the Asian Tour’s 2023 schedule in Oman. Meanwhile, England’s Richard Bland, Brendan Steele of the United States and South Africa’s Dean Burmester will make their debuts.

Abraham Ancer of Mexico pictured with the winner’s trophy after Round Four on Sunday February 5, 2023 at the PIF Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers.

Signalling the halfway point of The International Series 2023 season, the event at Close House will be pivotal for players looking to climb The International Series OOM, currently led by the only two-time International Series winner, Andy Ogletree.

As expected, there is already fierce competition to finish within the top 32 places come the end of the season. At that juncture, the player in the no.1 position will punch his ticket directly to the ultra-lucrative 2024 LIV Golf League, while the remaining 31 players will secure entry into the LIV Golf Promotions Event to vie for three further places up for grabs. Among those leading the charge to dethrone the current number one are several of the Asian Tour’s brightest stars, including a quartet of Thai golfers: Gunn Charoenkul, Chonalatit Chuenboonngam, Sadom Kaewkanjan and Phachara Khongwatmai. All currently sit within the top 10 of The International Series OOM and are looking to secure their first International Series wins. Head of The International Series, Rahul Singh, said: “Having the likes of Lee Westwood, Patrick Reed, Abraham Ancer and other LIV stars confirmed for International Series England is demonstrative of the growing strength of The International Series and the allure of the fabulous Lee Westwood Colt Course at Close House. “We are returning to England’s North East after being made to feel so welcome last year, despite restrictions imposed by the pandemic. We are ready to renew the fervour this year and welcome spectators to what stands to be the biggest International Series event yet.”

Graeme McDowell is up to 16th on the Asian Tour’s International Series England leaderboard at Close House after a second-round 69 saw him move to -2 for the tournament and trail the leaders by four.

McDowell’s approach play was impressive as he hit 16 of 18 greens in round two, but six birdies were offset by four bogeys – including two three-putts – in a round that could’ve been much lower had he not required 32 putts in total.

Speaking after his first round, McDowell said he would love to see the Asian Tour visit Royal Portrush, believing that there is potential for the Asian tour to come to Ireland and praising the support the Asian tour is receiving from household names on the LIV tour.

“Asian Tour Portrush, yeah, obviously I’d love to go up there, obviously we’re kind of happy with the partnership that we have now with the Asian Tour and Cho [CEO of Asian Tour Cho Minn Thant] and his whole team”, McDowell said.

“I think they’re a great team and I think we’re proud as LIV players and top players and guys that are obviously big names coming over to support the Asian Tour and I think it’s great to see them benefitting from it and I think it’s just the beginning, where can this go? I think you can go to great places”.

McDowell said that it’s important that the Asian Tour follow other tours and make themselves a global tour.

“Asia has to take advantage of new markets, new opportunities and take their players around the world because speaking from my point of view, I think it made me a better player playing on the European Tour when I was young because I got exposure to all different types of cultures and golf courses and grasses and environments around the world,” he told the media.

“I think it’s great to see the Asian Tour travelling and coming to new destinations, so we say global destinations. I think it’s great for the game, it’s great for the business of the game and I think that’s like I say, every tour in the world’s doing it now so it’s definitely important to follow suit.”

McDowell trails 21-year-old Spaniard David Puig and 38-year-old American Jason Kokrak by four strokes going into moving day. Puig’s 66 was the second lowest of the day and came despite missing six of 18 greens with all five of his birdies coming on the front nine.

Kokrak, who’d opened with a 67, followed up with a two-under 69 to take 36-hole co-leader honours and they’re a stroke clear of the USA’s Andy Ogletree and Australian Jack Thompson, with the former taking low round of the day honours with a 65.

“I’m Hitting the ball pretty good, the putts that dropped at the beginning didn’t drop at the end but overall, pretty happy,” said Puig, who’s another that plays on the LIV Tour.

“It was tough. But at the end of the day it’s a pretty short course so I have a lot of wedges in. It was maybe an extra club off the tee on some of those holes, but at the end of the day, you’re hitting the same club into the green.

“It was obviously a little more windy than yesterday, but I don’t think it played that tough because the greens are still pretty receptive and with preferred lies. But  it was a grind too, I mean you needed to hit good shots to have birdie opportunities, and I think I did.”

Kokrak didn’t feel he’d had his best in round two but is hoping that slight improvements will see him kick on over the closing two rounds.

“Yesterday with the way I got around, I hit it really nicely,” he said. “Didn’t have my best stuff today, didn’t hit it quite as good. Made a few putts to start the round to kind of keep it going, a couple five, eight footers here and there, but hopefully, you know, tidy a few things up and make a few putts over the weekend”, he said.

Lee Westwood shot a four-over-par 75 to finish just the right side of the cutline on three-over-par, alongside Ian Poulter’s son, Luke, who shot a 74 to make the cut as an amateur.

McDowell tees off at 11.40am tomorrow alongside Miguel Tabuena and Taichi Ko.

Close House to host Asian Tour event

Close House, which has also staged four editions of the British Masters from 2017-2020, has Lee Westwood as its tour ambassador. It has not yet been confirmed whether Westwood, who joined LIV Golf last year, will be playing in the International Series England.

The International Series was launched last year through an investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League. The ground-breaking initiative sits within the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged last season across seven countries in three continents.

“The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the UK,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO of the Asian Tour. “To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership.”

The next tournament on the International Series schedule takes place at Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand from March 9-12.

Asian Tour returns to England with star-studded field

asian tour close house pro am

The Asian Tour is gearing up for one of its biggest weeks as some of the biggest names in golf head to Close House in Newcastle for the $2 million International Series England from August 17-20.

Lee Westwood, the former world No. 1 with 44 career victories — including eight on the Asian Tour — spearheads a cohort of 10 LIV Golfers set to wow the crowds over the Colt Course, situated just a few miles from Newcastle upon Tyne.

Despite being born and raised in Worksop, and an ardent Nottingham Forest fan, ‘Westy’ moved to the region a number of years ago and struck up a long-standing partnership with Close House as its attached tour professional.

Luke Poulter Hails 'Really Cool' Finish As He And Dad Ian Impress On Asian Tour

Ian Poulter was runner-up at Close House in the International Series and his amateur son Luke came tied 22nd

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Luke and Ian Poulter at the 2022 JP McManus Pro-Am

Ian Poulter and son Luke won't forget the Asian Tour's International Series England event at Close House in a hurry after the pair completed memorable finishes.

Poulter senior, 47, came runner-up after a final round 64 for an impressive nine-under total but the proud dad will be more thrilled for his son Luke, 19, who finished level par to end up tied 22nd in the pro competition which had a starting field of 156 players.

Dad Ian was among the first to hug Luke for his birdie, eagle, par finish to join him in making the halfway cut but the youngster played even better over the weekend with rounds of 68 and 71 for a 284 total despite being the only amateur in the field. "It’s been amazing,” Luke said. “I beat him [Ian Poulter] one of the days, it was really cool and my main goal was to try and beat him this week, but, he got me by nine!”

Birdie, eagle, par finish for Luke Poulter to join his dad @IanJamesPoulter in making the cut at the @intseriesgolf at @CloseHouseGolf 👏🏼⛳️ pic.twitter.com/0oRKiQbzhm August 18, 2023

Poulter junior, who attends the University of Florida, eclipsed Lee Westwood 's son, Sam, was  competing in the event as a pro but missed the cut by ten shots after rounds of 76 and 79.

And his dad Ian was delighted with his final round too attempting to win for the first time in five years. He said: “I just kind of found the key to hitting a few putts on these greens, which I didn’t have the first three days. And you know, when you do that and you play good golf like I played the first three days, then you’re going to be able to make some birdies. I made quite a few ‘birds’."

But the biggest winner was American Andy Ogletree who finished 16-under and continues to dominate the Asian Tour with some hugely impressive play as his final round 64 ensured a seven-shot win and snuffed out any hopes of being overhauled.

It earned Ogletree’s third convincing International Series victory – he triumphed in Qatar by three this year and by four in Egypt last season – and it consolidated his lead on both the Asian Tour and International Series Order of Merits.

Ogletree, 25, who banked $360,000, is now being tipped for a glittering future by former Major winner Graeme McDowell after the American played for LIV in their first series.

McDowell assessed: "He was the US Amateur Champion of course but there's a bedding in period to step up the pro golf.

Andy Ogletree takes a shot during the 2022 LIV Golf London tournament

"Going straight into LIV Golf was like going into the lion’s den. There was obviously a lot of scrutiny, a lot of pressure, a lot of eyeballs, a lot of kind of negativity, and LIV was maybe a hard start for him in the beginning.

"But having the opportunity to play on the Asian Tour, playing as well as he has, he’s gone from strength-to-strength. It’s great to see him playing well and if he makes it, he’ll be a great addition to LIV.

"He’s clearly a young and upcoming superstar and it will be super interesting to see which team he fits into and how he does when he comes back out to play."

The Asian Tour now journeys north of the border next week for the inaugural St Andrews Bay Championship at Fairmont St Andrews. The $1.5 million event tees off on Thursday and features a host of big names, including former Masters champion Sergio Garcia .

Close House to host Asian Tour’s International Series

4.39pm 6th March 2023 - Sponsorship & Events

Professional golf is returning to Close House this summer, when the English leg of the Asian Tour’s new International Series is staged at the popular north-east England venue.

The $2 million tournament will be played from August 17-20 and represents the fifth stop on The International Series, a new programme of elevated events which features boosted prize money and the chance for the leading players to earn promotion to the LIV Golf League.

The International Series England made its debut last summer when it was held at Slaley Hall in June. It was a landmark event for the International Series and Asian Tour as it marked the first time the Tour had staged an event in the UK.

Close House also staged four editions of the British Masters from 2017-2020.

Close House Managing Director Jonathan Lupton said: “Welcoming The International Series back to Northumberland for a second consecutive year is an exciting development. Having had the pleasure to visit the International Series Oman in February, it was fantastic to see the growth of the series over the last year and we’re looking forward to working closely with the Asian Tour to create a memorable event in England.”

The Scott Macpherson-designed Lee Westwood Colt Course will be used for the tournament. The par-71 layout measures just under 7,000 yards and incorporates historical features throughout, including ha-ha walls and ancient woodland. It is one of two courses at Close House, with the other being the Lee Westwood Filly course.

“I am sure that the players will relish the challenge of the Lee Westwood Colt Course along with enjoying a very warm welcome from the members and guests,” said Close House owner, Sir Graham Wylie. “The people of the North-East are extremely passionate about sport and to host another world class event in the region is a huge honour.”

The International Series was launched last year through a historic investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League. The ground-breaking initiative sits with the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged last season across seven countries in three continents.

“The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the UK,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO of the Asian Tour. “To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership. We thank Close House for making this possible and look forward to another trip to the North of England, which, as we learned in 2022, is an incredible region for golf.”

The next tournament on the International Series schedule takes place at Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand from March 9-12.

CLOSE HOUSE SELECTED AS HOST COURSE FOR INTERNATIONAL SERIES ENGLAND

asian tour close house pro am

CLOSE HOUSE, England – Close House, a premier golf destination in the Northeast of England with a strong affiliation to one of the country’s greatest golfers Lee Westwood, will host this year’s International Series England and ensure another world-class venue will feature on The International Series schedule.

The US $2 million tournament will be played from Aug. 17-20 and represents the fifth stop on The International Series in 2023.

The International Series England made its debut last summer, in the same region, and was a landmark event for the International Series and Asian Tour as it marked the first time the Tour had staged an event in the United Kingdom.

Close House Managing Director Jonathan Lupton said:

The Scott Macpherson-designed Lee Westwood Colt Course will be used for the tournament. The highly rated par-71 layout measures just under 7,000 yards, and incorporates historical features throughout, including ha-ha walls and ancient woodland. It is one of two courses at Close House, with the other being the Lee Westwood Filly course.

Close House owner Sir Graham Wylie said:

The International Series was launched last year through a historic investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer unprecedented pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League. The ground-breaking initiative sits with the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged last season across seven countries in three continents.

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour, said:

A strong field will once again make the trip to Newcastle hoping to emulate Scott Vincent’s win which was the start of a brilliant season for the Zimbabwean that culminated in him winning the International Series Order of Merit and a place in the LIV Golf League in 2023.

Close House and passionate North-East welcomed return of International Series England

Close House,  a premier golf destination in the North-East of England with a strong affiliation to one of the country’s greatest golfers Lee Westwood, will hosted The International Series England 2023 and ensured another world-class venue featured on The International Series schedule.

The US$2 million tournament was played from August 17-20 and represented the fifth stop on The International Series in 2023.

The International Series England made its debut last summer, in the same region, and was a landmark event for the International Series and Asian Tour as it marked the first time the Tour had staged an event in the United Kingdom.

Before the event, Close House Managing Director, Jonathan Lupton, said: “Welcoming The International Series back to Northumberland for a second consecutive year is an exciting development.

“Having had the pleasure to visit the International Series Oman in February, it was fantastic to see the growth of the Series over the last year and we’re looking forward to working closely with the Asian Tour to create a memorable event in England.”

The Scott Macpherson-designed Lee Westwood Colt Course was used for the tournament. The highly rated par-71 layout measures just under 7,000 yards, and incorporates historical features throughout, including ha-ha walls and ancient woodland. It is one of two courses at Close House, with the other being the Lee Westwood Filly course.

“I am sure that the players will relish the challenge of the Lee Westwood Colt Course along with enjoying a very warm welcome from the members and guests,” said Close House owner, Sir Graham Wylie prior to the event.

“The people of the North-East are extremely passionate about sport and to host another world class event in the region is a huge honour.”

The International Series was launched in 2022 through a historic investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer unprecedented pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League. The ground-breaking initiative sits with the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged in 2022 across seven countries in three continents.

During the build up to the event, Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour stated that “The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the United Kingdom,”

“To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership.”

“We thank Close House for making this possible and look forward to another trip to the North of England, which, as we learned in 2022, is an incredible region for golf.”
