Rothenburg and the Romantic Road
A fantastic day in the middle ages.
,,,,Rothenburg … the famous walled city, frozen in time … it is every bit as amazing it as you have always heard! Let us take you to Rothenburg for the day and transport you into the feudal world of the middle ages. Spared from destruction during the 30 Years War (a great story we will tell you all about), the heart of Rothenburg has stayed pretty much the same ever since. Thus, we can visit a town with its defensive walls still entirely intact, complete with towers and elevated walkways. Rothenburg is full of winding lanes and half-timbered houses. We show you this fantastic city and cover its rich history – it was once one of the 10 largest cities in the entire Holy Roman Empire!
On top of all of this, Rothenburg is also known as the Christmas Capital. It is home to the Käthe Wohlfahrt chain of Christmas stores and their fantastic Christmas Museum – a visit not to be missed for any fan of Christmas.
To get to Rothenburg we drive along a stretch of the famous Romantic Road, which gets its name from the well-preserved medieval trading route with medieval towns and castles along its way. There is an optional stop at Harburg Castle, pretty much unchanged since the 15th century. We always stop for coffee in pretty Dinkelbühl which is also a completely walled town with a distinctly different story, architectural look and feel than Rothenburg.
The photos below were taken during past tours. The galleries for Rothenburg, the Romantic Road (incl. Dinkelsbühl) and the Tour Options (Harburg Castle) show how wonderful Rothenburg and the Romantic Road are!

One day in rothenburg ob der tauber: a free walking tour.
Threading its way through the towns and villages of Bavaria’s medieval heartland, the Romantic Road is quintessential Germany. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is the most compelling town on this route and one that is easily reached by rail.
But what should you do if you have just one day in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany? As I visited Rothenburg as a day trip from Nuremberg, this is where I can help you.
Ready to plan your perfect Rothenburg day trip ?
In this article, I spill the beans on why you should visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, how to make the most of your time there and how to get there. There’s even a map and a Rothenburg free walking tour to kickstart your day.

What is Rothenburg, Germany Known for?
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is famous as one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval towns, with wonky half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and an intact town wall with stone towers. This is a 14th Century town alive and kicking in the 21 st Century.
Planning Your Day Trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber: A Free Walking Tour (+ Map)
It’s a breeze to explore Rothenburg in one day on foot. The main sights in town are no more than a 15-minute walk from each other or from the train station.
If you like to map it out, here’s one that I prepared earlier. For an interactive map, simply click here or on the image itself.
For a more structured itinerary, you can use this map as a framework for a Rothenburg self-guided walking tour . Excluding walking along the town wall, the distance between these Rothenburg landmarks is just over one mile (2 km).
One Day in Rothenburg: Top 10 Things to Do
1. soak up the medieval splendour of rothenburg market square (marktplatz).
Rothenburg Market Square ((Marktplatz) is a one-stop shop of medieval marvels.
From the town’s heyday around the year 1300, this has been Rothenburg’s beating heart. Thanks to its strategic location on the route from Würzburg to the Alps – today’s Romantic Road – Rothenburg was an important trading town and Germany’s second-biggest city.
The 13 th Century Old Town Hall dominates Marktplatz. Part Gothic, part Renaissance, it was partially rebuilt following a fire in 1501.
Your reward for scaling the 220 narrow steps to the viewing platform at the summit of the Old Town Hall’s tower is a bird’s eye view of Rothenburg and its surroundings. Check the seasonal opening hours here .
The clock crowning the neighbouring Councillor’s Tavern puts on a show at the top of the hour between 10 am and 10 pm when its little doors flip open and wooden figures re-enact the Meisertrunk (“Master Draught”) legend. It’s a big tourist draw but I found it underwhelming.
The Renaissance New Town Hall occupies the entire long side of the square.
Even in medieval times, it was location, location, location, and the town’s wealthiest citizens lived in and around Marktplatz. Some of the finest houses are on the square and in the neighbouring streets.
The townsfolk once drew their water from the colourful St. George’s Fountain , which dates from the early 1600s. Two typical half-timbered buildings tower above the fountain.
2. See a drop of Christ’s blood at St. James’s Church
For centuries, pilgrims have been following the Camino de Santiago or “Way of St. James.”
On their way to venerate the remains of St. James at Spain’s Santiago de Compostella, pilgrims had rest stops at important Christian sights. Rothenburg and St. James’s Church (St. Jakob’s Church) was one of these stops, for which they have to thank a drop of Christ’s blood.
Visiting this beautiful church is one of the unmissable things to do in Rothenburg, and its highlight is the carved wooden altarpiece that holds the Holy Blood . The relic itself is held in a rock-crystal capsule set in a cross in the centre of the shrine.
This wonderful work of art was created by Würzburg native Tilman Reimenschnieder between 1499 and 1504. He was known as the Michelangelo of German woodcarvers and sculpted this altarpiece around the same time as Michelangelo was liberating David from a block of marble from Carrara .
St. James’s High Altar has a magnificent altarpiece with painted panels by Friedrich Herlin and carved wooden statues. To the left of the main altarpiece is the stone Tabernacle of the Holy Eucharist , depicting Jesus overcoming death by standing on a skull.
As you leave the High Altar, take a look at the paintings on the rear of the altarpiece, especially the face of Christ painted on the veil of Veronica.
GOOD TO KNOW
Try to visit St. James Church in the morning when the sun shining through the windows in the east choir floods the church with colour.
Address : Kirchplatz, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Opening hours : 10 am – 6 pm. Hours are shortened in the winter months.
3. Take time out in the Convent Garden
This former Dominican monastery garden is an oasis of tranquillity in Rothenburg.
Back in the day, nuns and monks cultivated this medicinal herb garden to concoct cures and disguise the rancid taste of rotting food. Today’s herb garden is flourishing and its plants are carefully labelled, with the number of crosses on the sign indicating how poisonous the herb is.
4. Enjoy the views from Castle Garden
Although the burg (castle) was taken out of Rothenburg in 1356, the location of the former Stauferburg is now the town’s Castle Garden. All that remains of the castle is the small Blasius Chapel, in front of which is a memorial to local Jews slaughtered in 1298.
From here, there are wonderful views of Rothenburg’s medieval skyline and across the Tauber Valley.
5. Visit Rothenburg’s Medieval Crime Museum
Rothenburg’s Medieval Crime Museum is the most unlikely tourist attraction but it weirdly works.
Stuffed with diabolical instruments of punishment and torture, this is Europe’s largest museum on legal rights. Shame masks, racks, thumbscrews – it has the lot.
Don’t miss the cage of the baker’s baptism behind the museum’s gateway.
If a baker was caught cheating with ingredients in the Middle Ages, he would be placed in this cage to be publicly scorned, Worse still, he would be plunged into icy water.
At the museum’s entrance, you’ll see the creepy Child Catcher Carriage from the 1968 movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang , which was filmed in Rothenburg.
Address : Burggasse 3-5, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Opening hours : Click here for current opening hours.
6. Snack on a Schneeball
Don’t leave town before trying Rothenburg’s tasty pastry.
Schneeball or Schneeballen (snowball in English) is a heavenly cloud of sweetness made from layers of shortcrust pastry and dusted with sugar. They are widely sold in bakeries and cafes in town.
Thanks to their generous shelf-life – around eight weeks – schneeballen make good presents for the folks back home.
7. Snap a shot of one of Germany’s most photographed streets
Plölein is Rothenburg’s most famous landmark. Featuring a small fountain in front of a timber-framed house, flanked by the two towers of the old city wall, it is perfectly picturesque.
If it looks familiar, this may be because you recognise it from the 1940 Disney animation Pinocchio , which was inspired by Rothenburg.
8. Visit the shop where it is Christmas year-round
Jingle All The Way down to Rothenburg’s famous Christmas village. Founded in 1964, Käthe Wohlfahrt is the largest and most famous vendor of traditional German Christmas products.
This is truly a festive wonderland, with animations, Christmas music and a massive selection of high-quality toys and decorations.
If you are a lover of all things Christmas, visit the German Christmas Museum in Rothenburg. The town is also home to one of Germany’s most popular Christmas market s. In 2023, this will take place between 1st December and 23rd December.
9. Walk Rothenburg’s city wall
Time permitting, take a stroll along Rothenburg’s old city wall. Clocking in at just over a mile and a half, the complete walk will take you less than an hour.
You can enter or exit the ramparts at most of the city’s towers. I followed the wall for a short distance from Siebertstor.
10. Join the Night Watchman’s tour
Finally, to bring the ramparts to life with a cheeky wink, join the cheesy Night Watchman’s Tour . Described as a “Medieval John Cleese,” the Night Watchman makes his rounds of Rothenburg as he dishes out entertaining nuggets about the town’s history.
The Night Watchman tour sets off from Marktplatz at 8 pm every night (except for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve). From January to April, there are no tours on Sundays.
Day Tours to Rothenburg
It is perfectly feasible to visit Rothenburg as a day trip by train from Munich or Frankfurt, and I’ve included how to do this at the end of this post. But if you want to see the bits of the Romantic Road that are not reachable by rail or simply want someone else to take care of the arrangements, an organised day tour is worth considering.
You will also benefit from the knowledge of a guide and if you are a solo traveller, a day tour can be also an excellent way to meet other travellers .

You can see the best of Rothenburg in one day. I spent around four hours in the town and managed to see everything that I wanted.

Nuremberg to Rothenburg day trip by train
Rothenburg ob der Tauber was one of my day trips from Nuremberg . With its lovingly restored medieval buildings, a meandering river crisscrossed with historic bridges, a clutch of excellent museums and arguably the tastiest sausages in Germany, Nuremberg is an excellent base in Upper Bavaria.
There is no direct train from Nuremberg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. You will need to change trains at Ansbach and again at Steinbach.
This is not as tricky as it may sound and the journey time is just a shade over one hour. Connecting trains operate every two hours.

Historical Overview Of Rothenburg ob der Tauber:
Due to fires in the town halls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the Middle Ages, many historical records were lost, but the pieces of early history preserved today are still very fascinating. This general area of the Tauber River Valley was first settled by Celtic people over 2,000 years ago. There are sections of both the original preserved and recreated Celtic Wall ( Keltenwall ) that can be found along the western banks of the Tauber River. Little is known about this early era, however, archeologists recently found a folding chair from the Dark Ages in a grave on the outskirts of Rothenburg which dates back to 600 AD. These discoveries show us there are so many secrets left to uncover in the early history of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
The recorded history of greater Rothenburg starts around 960 AD, when the hamlet of Detwang was established in the lower valley along the river. The church there was consecrated by the Bishop of Worms in 968 AD and still has an old-world feel. Although it sits high above the Tauber River, some of the buildings inside the boundary of Rothenburg’s old town have foundations that also date back to the 900s, including that of Zur Holl Restaurant, which is the oldest in town.
Rothenburg proper grew more formal roots around 1070-1080 AD when the Counts of Comburg built a wooden fortification above the river called the Vinegar Jug along today’s Spital Quarter. The Counts of Comburg were headquartered out of Schwabish Hall and controlled vast areas of land, including this stretch of the Tauber River Valley.
It is assumed that the early hilltop settlement in Rothenburg was only sparsely populated, but it did attract in Conrad III Hohenstaufen whose uncle Henry V was the Holy Roman Emperor. Part of the reason Conrad III was drawn in was to marry Gertrude in 1115, who was the daughter of the last Count of Comburg; the following year, Conrad III was named the Duke of Franconia by his uncle.
With an embattled rise to power and powerful allies, Conrad III became the King of Germany in 1138 . This was followed by King Conrad III building his royal castle in Rothenburg in 1142. The Hohenstaufens’s red castle ( Rothenburg ) gave the village its name and a lot of power as it officially started to form around 1170.
King Conrad died before he could be crowned Holy Roman Emperor, and after his son (Friedrich IV) also died, the castle sat vacant, but the village around it grew. Gaining a ton of power with its location at the crossroads of two important trade routes, Rothenburg was further elevated to a Free Imperial City in 1274 by King Rudolf of the Habsburg Dynasty. The trade routes were the Thuringian Castle Road ( also called middle Saint James Way ) going East to West from Prague to Paris and the Romantic Road ( Known then as the Staufen Road ) running North and South.
With its newfound status, the city became one of the most important city-states of the Middle Ages. Although the castle fell into disrepair, this stone helped create a powerful city wall to protect the prospering village. By 1400, Rothenburg grew to be one of the ten largest towns in the Holy Roman Empire, with 6,000 residents, and the second largest in Germany behind Cologne.
Jewish people were kicked out of town by the Council after pressure from preacher Johann Teuschlein. Rothenburg participates in the Peasants’ War and tries to introduce the Reformation, but Margrave Casimir has to surrender. Johann Teuschlein and other rebels are executed. Reformation hit Rothenburg in 1544 turning it Protestant. Churches were forced to change by 1559, with only the Knights of St. John ( until 1809 ) and the Teutonic Order ( 1672 bought by the city ) remaining Catholic, but both orders of knights had to renounce their churches, Saint Jakob and Saint Johannis.
During the 30 Years’ War in 1631, the Catholic Count of Tilly forcibly desecended onto Lutheran Rothenburg to quarter his 40,000 troops. Tilly had been on the way to another city, but bad storms forced him to go to Rothenburg instead. Legend has it that Count Tilly told the villagers that if anyone could drink a 3-liter tankard of wine in one drink he would take his troops and leave. Mayor Nusch took the challenge and saved the town by drinking it all in a single gulp, which today is celebrated as the so-called “Master Draught” . In reality, the troops stayed through the Winter and left the city poor and depleted. In total, Rothenburg is occupied seven times during the war. The major regional trade routes changed after the 30 Years’ War, and Rothenburg never recovered. The most devesting occupations were in 1631 & 1634 by the Swedes plus 1645 by the French. Because of its lack of income, Rothenburg was frozen in time and persevered from modernization.
Shortly after Rothenburg was annexed into Bavaria in 1802, tourists started arriving at the picture-perfect village. By 1880 preservation laws were quickly passed to prevent the city from modernizing. The Medieval time capsule attracted artists and tourists from all over Europe. It was the beauty of the city that ultimately saved it from being completely destroyed by American artillery in WW2. There was heavy damage from aircraft bombing, but thankfully it has been repaired through donations. Today Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most magical places on allowing you to step back in time.

How to Get to Rothenburg ob der Tauber
TripSavvy / Christopher Larson
Rothenburg, Germany, is a major stop on the Romantic Road—a 260-mile trail that takes visitors from the town of Würzburg in the Franken wine-growing region to Fussen in Bavaria (where you can stay while visiting Neuschwanstein castle)—known for its well-preserved medieval architecture.
Offering guests the chance to explore over 1,000 years of history, Rothenburg is a popular destination for tourism in Germany year-round, and getting to this Bavarian city is relatively simple no matter where you're traveling from. However, it's likely that you'll be coming from the closest airport, Stuttgart Airport (STR), which is about one and a half hours by car from Rothenburg. Stuttgart is a major hub for Germanwings and TUI fly, but a larger airport is Frankfurt Airport.
Fortunately, there are a number of convenient ways to get to Rothenburg including direct service on train and bus lines that span the entire country. Additionally, there are a number of guided tours and day trips offered to Rothenburg from other major cities across Germany, so be sure to ask your travel agent about package deals if you hope to add the city to your German travel itinerary during your trip.
Getting to Rothenburg by Train or Bus
Rothenburg's train station is about a ten-minute walk from the center of the city (within the walls at the Rödertor gate), but it might take you a little longer to get to the market square or Marketplatz .
In order to get to Rothenburg directly, the only two-car regional train with direct service here is the train from Steinach, which dead-ends at Rothenburg o.d. Tauber Station and takes approximately 15 minutes. As a result, you'll likely have to make several train changes if you're coming from a larger city like Frankfurt or Munich; alternatively, you can buy your train ticket to the Ansbach Station and take a bus 16 kilometers to Rothenburg.
- From Munich: Train service to Rothenburg takes about three hours and passes through Augsburg. Multiple daily train services depart from München Central Station; you'll need to transfer at Nuremberg Central Station for a train to Ansbach then transfer to Ansbach Bahnhof station, which provides bus service to Rothenburg.
- From Frankfurt: Europabus ED190 travels daily from Frankfurt to Füssen with stops in Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Munich, among other stops on the Romantic Road . There may be a discount on the bus if you have a rail pass. Travel takes about two and a half hours.
- From Berlin: Although it may be faster to fly to a closer city, you can also take the train or bus from Berlin to Rothenburg, which will take between five and seven hours to complete. Trains depart multiple times a day from Berlin Central Station bound for Bamberg Station, where you can transfer to a Würzburg-bound train. Once in Würzburg, take a train to Steinach, which has a 15-minute express train that dead-ends in Rothenburg.
Getting to Rothenburg by Car
When it comes to having the most flexibility with your travel itinerary, there's no better way to get to Rothenburg than by car. Although train and bus trips take about the same amount of time as getting there by car, the ability to stop along the way makes renting a car a worthwhile investment if you have some extra time for leisurely touring during your visit.
- From Frankfurt: Take the A2 to Würzburg, then the A7 to Rothenburg. The distance is about 120 kilometers and takes about two hours to complete.
- From Munich: Take the A8 Autobahn to Augsburg-West, then B2 to Donauworth, then the scenic Romantic Road to Rothenburg. Alternatively, you can continue on the A8 and take the A7 to the Rothenburg exit instead of taking the B2. It should take around 2 hours and 45 minutes to drive this route.
- From Berlin: Take the A 100 to the A 115, then merge onto the A 10 before taking a left onto the A 9, which you'll take 371 kilometers to Nurnberg before merging onto the A7 toward Würzburg/Rothenburg. The whole trip should take somewhere between five to six hours, but you should plan for a few stops along the way to take in the scenery.
Coach Tours and Day Trips
If you only have a limited time in this part of the country—or you don't want to worry about what to do on your trip—there are a number of coach tours and day trips to Rothenburg from Munich and Frankfurt.
For instance, Viator offers a "Romantic Road, Rothenburg, and Harburg" day tour that originates in Munich and offers guests the chance to see some of the most famous sites along this part of the Romantic Road. A longer version of this same trip originates in Frankfurt and includes Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein in addition to Rothenburg and the Romantic Road.

What do they say about us, travelers testimonials, matt ebiner.
Thank you for organizing the Jordan tour for my group from 4-11 January, in conjunction with Anubis Tours in Egypt. Abdullah was an excellent guide and the driver was also excellent. The tour went very well and the group especially enjoyed Rahayeb Camp in Wadi Rum. Ayass Hotel in Amman and Ramada Dead Sea Resort were also very good. The one hotel we didn't like as much was Seven Wonders Hotel in Wadi Musa. It was good, but not as good as the other 3 places we stayed in Jordan.
