Visiting London? Download These 8 Apps Before You Go

From Banksy to Bikes, and Much More

best app for travelling around london

Planning a trip to London? Forget guidebooks and paper maps, out-of-date brochures and visiting the same boring "attractions" as everyone else.

Instead, install a bunch of these useful apps and be better informed, save money and have a more enjoyable time in the UK capital!

London Official City Guide

Start off with the city's official guide, crammed full of local tips for restaurants and bars, attractions and things to do. The app works offline, so you don't need to worry about expensive roaming charges, and includes step by step public transport directions.

You can create your own itineraries, and there's a full list of amenities like pharmacies and currency exchange outlets.

Free on iOS and Android

There's no shortage of free navigation apps out there, but for London, CityMapper is one of the best. You'll get detailed transit options for all available modes of transport, including city bikes, Uber and more – and exact or estimated prices for all of them.

Service disruptions are factored in, in real time, and you can get a live ETA at a glance.

National Trust

Britain's National Trust administers over 500 sites throughout the country, including historic houses and buildings, archaeological sites and monuments, and much more. You can search the entire database, or just see what's nearby.

It works offline, and you can create a wishlist to ensure you don't miss anything. With around 20 sites in Greater London and plenty of others within an easy day trip, you'll run out of time before you run out of places to visit!

MetOffice Weather

The weather in London is infamously fickle, regardless of the time of year. You can't do anything to change it, but at least you can be prepared with the MetOffice app. It includes hourly forecasts for the next two days, extended forecasts for a week, and push notifications for severe weather.

Oh, and if you don't want to deal with your temperatures in Celsius while you're in the UK, the app lets you switch to Fahrenheit to make life easier!

London is massive, with something for every taste – but just getting a handle on your options for any given day can be an overwhelming challenge. The companion app for the city's venerable Time Out magazine helps you narrow things down with up-to-date listings for concerts, food and drink, theatre and events and much more.

Search and filter to your heart's content, book restaurants, and tickets, and save favorites for later use.

London Theatre Direct

The UK capital is rightly famous for its theater scene, with world-class shows every night of the week. While the most-popular can be sold out months in advance, it's often possible to pick up seats for other great performances with little notice – sometimes, even the same day.

The London Theatre Direct app lets you browse and purchase seats for a wide range of shows, and (usefully for travelers) gives you the option of collecting tickets at the box office.

Santander Cycles

When the weather's nice, cycling around London is a fantastic way to see the city at its best and get some exercise into the bargain. The shared city bike service is a flexible and inexpensive way to get on two wheels – paying two pounds gives you unlimited half-hour journeys within 24 hours.

After registering your payment card, the official app shows you bike availability at nearby docking stations and sends an unlock code to your phone when you decide to rent one. Just walk up to the docking point, enter your code and ride away. Easy!

Street Art London

For fans of good street art, look no further than this dedicated London app. You can filter by your favorite artist, or just see what's nearby and follow the map to track them down. Sure, Banksy's works are included – but so are those from hundreds of other, lesser-known artists across the city.

You'll get detailed information about both the artist and their art, and there are interviews and other features in the app to help you learn more.

Whether you’re a born and raised Londoner, or you’re a tourist just visiting for the weekend, you’ll need this list of best London apps to help you navigate the city, and perhaps even save some money in the process.

From travel and transport (we’ve got a hot tip that will save you 1/3 off your tube journeys at the weekend!) to entertainment, food, groceries and daily living. You can bet that your life will be made that little bit easier with these apps. Most of the apps are free to use, and so there’s no excuse not to use them.

You might even find that you impress your friends with your new found knowledge! Let’s get into it…

London Travel Apps

1) citymapper.

Citymapper is a must-have app if you’re a Londoner OR if you travel frequently. It is compatible with citites all over the world, and it’s especially good for anyone who is using public transport in London.

Use the app to find available routes to your destination. Citymapper will show you different route options, how long they take and how much they cost.

If you are in London, you’ll most likely get shown a couple of routes on The Tube, a bus route, walking, cycling, and possibly even a cab. It’ll break down the most cost efficient and time efficent options- all you have to do is pick one!

2) Tube Map

Tube Map does what it says on the tin, and is an app you can use to plan your journeys in London on the London Underground. I really like it because the app allows you to map journeys even when you’re offline. It’s super helpful when you’re already underground and the train decides it’s going to terminate half way through your journey!

When you ARE connected to the internet, it’ll estimate the real time of your journey, how long it will take you to transfer between stations, and also if there are any delays, distruption or strikes on the tube lines.

I’m sure most of you reading this will already have Uber downloaded on your phone, but if you don’t and you’re visiting London, I’d recommend it! Not only is Uber (usually) cheaper than a black cab, your driver will come to you.

That means you don’t have to find a taxi rank or go into a town centre to get a taxi. It’s super convenient, and in London a driver is usually with you within 5 minutes.

For £5 off your first 5 Uber trips, use my referral code hqms13svx1v8 when you download the app.

Bolt is very similar to Uber. As a Londoner, I’ll always check both apps to see which one is cheapest for my journey. You will also find that Bolt frequently offer deals like “20% off your next 5 rides” which make the pricing very competitive when compared to Uber.

From my experience, there’s not always as many drivers listed on Bolt, so you may need to wait for up to 10 minutes for a driver. However, the Bolt app will tell you the wait time before you go ahead with the journey, so you can check this and make a decision beforehand.

Download Bolt using my link to get a discount off your first ride.

5) TFL Oyster and contactless app

This is a true must-have app for London. If you’re living in London or visiting London, always pay with either Oyster or contactless payment when you travel- it saves you SO MUCH money on your journeys.

And if you’re using Oyster or contactless payment, you’ll want to download this free app from TFL . Not only can you top up your Oyster card on the go, but you can also view your travel history, flag any incomplete journeys, and make sure you haven’t been overcharged (it happens more than you think).

Another little known bonus of using an Oyster card, is that you can get a third off, off-peak travel on TFL (including the London Underground) if you have a rail card . All you need to do is ask a station attendant to add your rail card to your Oyster card for you.

6) London live bus countdown

If you’ve ever taken a London bus before, you know how unreliable the bus times can be! Sometimes you can be left wondering if your bus is ever going to come… especially if there are road works or diversions in place.

Enter London Live Bus Countdown . It’s a free app that allows you to see exactly when your next bus is coming via live data received from Transport For London (TFL). If you ever catch the bus, or plan on taking the bus in the future- you need this app on your phone.

7) Santander Cycles

Previously known as ‘Boris Bikes,’ Santander Cycles are such a fun way to get around in London. You pay just £1.65 for a journey up to 30 minutes, so it’s affordable too.

There are more than 800 docking stations around London- and the free app can tell you where your nearest docking station is with available bikes. Very important to avoid disappointment! There is also a map so that you can plan your journey.

8) Trainline

Trainline is essential for anyone booking trains out of London to different towns and cities across the UK. Not only can you pay for your tickets easily, you can also add your rail card and get the cheapest price (they use SplitSave to get you the cheapest combination of tickets).

The app will also tell you which platform to get your train from. But, for the most accurate information on train platforms, you’ll want to head to realtimetrains.co.uk , a website that forecasts train platforms. It’s invaluable to get ahead of that scramble as soon as the platform is announced!

Have you seen those cool electric scooters in London? They are provided by a company called Lime. It’s easy to use and hire the scooters when you have the Lime app . You can also hire e-bikes, for greener travel around London.

Use the app to discover a nearby ride (Lime isn’t yet available in every London borough, but is very prevalent in Central London), pay, and then unlock the ride!

10) Appyway parking app

Use appyway  to find free parking in London . You can use their kerbside maps to help you plan your journey and find free parking spaces.

The parking app can also help you to navigate congestion, and understand any street parking rules, including meters, permits and more.

Food & Drink Apps In London

No, Dojo isn’t about local martial arts gyms, it’s actually about restaurants! More specifically, it’s about queuing for those ‘no reservations’ restaurants (which, let’s be honest, is many of the restaurants in Central London).

So how does it work? The Dojo app allows you to join a ‘virtual queue’ once you’re within throwing distance of your chosen restaurant. Instead of queuing in the rain for half an hour (we’ve all done it!) you can instead pop to a nearby pub to wait your turn for a table to become available. It’s definitely one of the best London apps to have in your toolbox whether you’re a tourist or a local.

12) OpenTable

OpenTable is a restaurant reservation service. Often, restaurants will already be partnered with OpenTable on their own websites, so it’s just a matter of inputting your details online to reserve a time.

The app on the other hand, makes reservations even simpler, and it’s the perfect way to search for new restaurants. You can simply search by location, cuisine, and read reviews and menu options.

13) The Pub Finder

Brits love the pub. So if you’re visiting London, you’ll want to experience a couple of them while you’re in the city! And if you’re a Londoner? You can use the app to find the highest rated pubs, with customer reviews and ratings.

The Pub Finder is a free app with over 26,000 pubs listed! It’s so simple to use- the brighter the colour of the pub on a map, the better the rating. You’ll never have to drink in a shoddy pub again.

14) DUSK app

DUSK is a drinks app that allows you to accrue points to redeem against free drinks. All you need to do, is link your card and earn DUSK points every time you spend at your favourite bars.

While using the app, out for the ‘free drink button’ in the bars list or the free drink pin on the map. Once you arrive at the venue, simply tap the free drink button. You must show the bartender the drink confirmation screen in order to claim your drink.

15) Too Good To Go

Too Good To Go is an app that is fighting food waste- and it’s particularly popular in London. The app lists foods from eateries- from big supermarkets to local bakeries. You can pick up a bag of food for about £4.

The small downside of Too Good To Go is that you don’t know exactly what you’re getting in each bag. You may end up with lots of sweet treat, but hey, that’s not always a bad thing!

Olio  is another app that’s fighting waste. It’s a community app where users can list items, or pick up food or other items from neighbours or stores for free.

Luckily, in London there are plenty of users. That means you should find people in your area with unwanted food, and likewise you can probably find someone to pick up your unwanted food. Perfect if you’re about to go on holiday for a while.

17) Uber Eats

We already mentioned Uber on this list, but Uber Eats also deserves a mention as a food delivery app. Once you download Uber, you’ll have access to Uber Eats too.

You can order from restaurants and takeaways all over London with Uber Eats, and you can even get shopping delivered from the supermarket too. Perfect for those days when you just can’t get to the supermarket!

18) Deliveroo

Deliveroo is another food delivery app where you can order food from all over the city (within reason). You’ll have access to a ton of restaurants and fast food outlets in your local area, and a few neighbourhoods over too.

Like Uber Eats, Deliveroo also gives you the option to order grocery shopping from local stores. It’s great if you don’t want to walk in the rain, or it’s late at night.

London Money Apps

19) splittr.

Splittr is an incredible app for anyone who often dines out with groups of friends, or anyone who lives in a house share. It’s even great if you want to split costs with your partner, or on a group holiday.

The idea behind Splittr, is that it makes it easy to split a bill or a cost. You’ll never need to chase anyone for payment again! Simply add expenses as you go and Splittr will tell you who is next to pay and who owes whom how much.

All currencies are supported on the app, and best of all, it’s free to use!

If you’re living in London, you’ll most likely need to be abreast of your money management due to the high cost of living in the city. One way to easily keep on top of that? An automated app.

I love using  Snoop  as a money management and budgeting tool. It’s free to use, and you can view all of your accounts in one place, and track your spending accordingly. In my opinion, it’s one of the very best London apps for Londoners on a budget (or anyone on a budget, to be honest!)

Snoop tracks all your spending for you, and allocates everything into categories. It means that you can take a pretty laid back approach to tracking spending, while still getting the data you need to stay on top of your money.

21) Apple Pay

If you’re an iPhone user, you need to set up Apple Pay. Not only does it mean you can easily tap into The Tube using your phone, you can also pay for most things from your phone.

There is a problem with pickpockets in Central London, and so if you can, it’s always good to have a back up plan for making payments if your wallet gets stolen.

Wise , formerly known as TransferWise, is a fantastic way to transfer and exchange money internationally. It’s super easy to do via the app, and you save a heck of a lot on feeds when sending money abroad.

If you’ve moved to London from abroad and you want to send money back home? You need to download Wise asap. Trust me, you will love it.

Now, Monzo isn’t necessarily a total must have app as a Londoner. It does come with a little consideration because Monzo is an actual bank account.

However, there are SO many people in London who bank with Monzo, and therefore, whenever you are out with friends, one person will usually ask “can I Monzo you the money?” This is because Monzo make it super easy to send money to friends, just by using their phone number.

Monzo also has some great budgeting features like saving pots, and automatic expense tracking, so it’s worth checking out if you think you could benefit.

24) Topcashback

Topcashback  is an app (and website) that you can use to get cashback on your everyday purchases. It works on the basis that whenever you click through to a retailer website via  Topcashback , the retailer will pay Topcashback a small commission (also known as an affiliate payment) for referring you to their website. Topcashback will keep some of that commission for themselves, and then pass on the rest to you.

I use the app for absolutely everything that I buy online. I have received hundreds of pounds back in cashback over the years, and it’s totally worth using to get some extra money while living in London.

best app for travelling around london

25) Jam Doughnut

Jam Doughnut  is another excellent way to get cashback on your everyday spending. The basis of the app is that you buy a voucher first to cover the amount of your spending. For example, you buy a voucher worth £100.

You’ll then receive cashback on your shop which is instantly added to your wallet on the app. For example, when you shop at Tesco, you can receive 3.5% cashback currently. If your grocery shop costs £100 per week, you’ll get back £3.50 per week, or £14 over 4 weeks. Over the course of a year that’s £182!

📱 Download the app for free   and use my code YVVR to get a £4 bonus when you use the app for the first time

26) Airtime Rewards

Yet another way to get cashback! Use  Airtime Rewards to get cashback on your purchases and offset this against your phone bill. You can receive cashback from retailers such as Boots, Wilkos, Waitrose, Matalan and many more.

You can connect your debit card to the Airtime Rewards app, and instantly receive cashback. There’s no need to complete your purchase within the app itself. Use my referral code  9F333XJG , to get 50p to get started.

groceries-in-london

Apps for groceries in London

Sign up for a Tesco Clubcard and manage your account through the Tesco app . If you regularly shop at Tesco, this is an absolute must due to the prevelance of Clubcard Prices where you can often make big savings on your groceries.

You’ll also accrue Clubcard Points which you can then redeem against your shopping or other experiences or purchases.

If you live near a Co-op store in London, you need the Co-op app . Each week you will get a choice of two vouchers which you can redeem in store.

Often, these are vouchers like ’50p off Nestle chocolate’ or ’50p of bakery items’ which goes a long way for a little treat once a week! The best way to use these vouchers? Use them against a ‘yellow sticker’ reduced item to get the most out of your voucher.

29) Waitrose

Similarly to the Co-op, Waitrose Card members can select two vouchers per week from the Waitrose app to redeem against their shopping.

Annoyingly, these vouchers are usually on specific items, so you don’t get the same choice that you do when you shop at the Co-op.

However, the vouchers are usually based on what you’ve previously bought. So, you might find these useful. Plus, you can get free coffee with a purchase, and a free magazine as a Waitrose member.

30) Shopmium

Shopmium  is a free and fun app that you can use to to pick up free food items from supermarkets. The reason the items are available is usually due to a new product launch.

As well as freebies, you can also get significantly reduced food items from the app. All you need to do is scan your receipt to be credited with the difference! Use my referral code  TU4U38  to get a free bag of Cadbury’s chocolate buttons when you  sign up and can your receipt.

31) Chop Chop

Chop Chop is a fantastic food delivery app from Sainsbury’s. You can do a small Sainsbury’s shop from within the app, and an hour later have the food delivered to your door!

The prices are a little more expensive than the in-store prices, but this is super handy if you’re not able to get out of the house to do a food shop for whatever reason.

And if you regularly shop at Sainsbury’s? Make sure that you register for a Nectar Card to access Nectar Prices and scoop up those savings!

Gopuff was founded in America, but it’s made its way across the pond to London. With Gopuff you can get food, drink, and everyday items delivered to your door in 30 minutes.

It’s another app to have in your phone for those moments when you just can’t leave the house! Whether it’s late at night, you have a baby, or you are feeling under the weather.

Event and ticket apps for London

33) tiqets app.

Tiqets is a free app that links to hundreds of different attractions and events in the city, all in one place! You can use the app offline to view your tickets, so you don’t need to be connected to the internet to get your ticket scanned (a bonus if you’re travelling to London from abroad!)

You can also access guides within the app, as well as reviews from other visitors.

Fever puts the coolest events and experiences (ever heard of those Candlelight Concerts?) in London at your fingertips. Use their app to search for upcoming events and book tickets (some events of which are exclusive to Fever).

On the app you’ll also find a map showing the locations of all of the events, reviews and user recommendations, and even have access to Fever Club. Fever Club is a reward system on all ticket purchases.

35) TodayTix

Use the TodayTix app to access the best prices and availability for London performances such as West End shows, opera and dance. You can filter your search based on genre, price and date. Checkout is quick, and your tickets are easily accessed digitally. It’s definitely one of the best London apps for theatre buffs.

When you download the TodayTix app , you also get access to ticket lotteries for West End theatre tickets. Use the Lottery and Rush filters to find the lotteries in London. If selected, you’ll be notified by the app and by email, and you’ll have 30 minutes to claim your tickets.

36) Seatplan

SeatPlan  is app that you can use to see the ‘real life’ view from seats before you book tickets to a production. For example, if the only seats left say ‘restricted view’ you can find out just how good or bad the view is, instead of taking a chance on the booking.

You can also use the app to build up points to redeem against theatre tickets. If you’re a big theatre fan, you can upload photos of the view from your seat, and build up points. Build up enough points, and you could score a f r ee theatre ticket !

37) Eventbrite

I love using Eventbrite to discover new and interesting events, talks, and shows across London. You’ll find niche performances, classes, and even some free stuff too.

Use the Eventbrite app to browse events based on location, price, and date. You won’t be disappointed, and you’ll be able to find an event for everything. From free dance classes , to pottery schools.

39) Toilets4London

Toilets4London is revolutionising toilet access in the city. No more buying things in cafes or bars just so that you can use their loos! The app is best way to find publicly accessible toilets in London.

And it’s not just any toilet-finding app. Toilets4London work closely with local authorities, community groups and local businesses to encourage more clean and open toilets in London.

40) Refill App

The refill app isn’t just a water app (although it is very handy to show you where you can refill your water bottle in the city!) It also shows you a variety of places to reduce, reuse and refill.  The app lists over 300,000 refill stations- offering refills for water, coffee, food containers and plastic-free shopping.

If you’re on a mission to reduce waste and your impact on the environment, this is a helpful London app for you to have in your back pocket.

41) Met Office Weather

If you’re a Brit, or you know a Brit, you’ll know that we love talking about the weather. Namely, whether it’s going to rain or not.

The weather can be very changeable in London, so it’s a good idea to download the Met Office Weather app so that you are always prepared with an umbrella if needed. Alternatively, sometimes it will be cold in the morning and you’ll need sunscreen by noon. It’s a lottery! Which is why making good use of a weather app will stand you in good stead in the city.

In early June 2021 electric scooters became available to rent in a handful of London boroughs. Currently, this is the only way to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads or in other public places in London. Riders must be  18 or over  and have a full or provisional driving licence to rent an e-scooter.

There are three different operators offering e-scooter rentals:

18 Best London Apps

Last Updated on 24 February 2024

As a born and raised Londoner, I’ve learned a lot about navigating this big city. And a lot of it comes down to having the best London apps. How to get around easily, where to go out to eat and where to find the best deals for entertainment can be difficult when there are so many options. So, I can only imagine how overwhelming it can be for non-Londoners to get around and find things to enjoy in this amazing city!

For this reason, I decided to create an ultimate list of the best London apps you’ll need if you’re ever visiting London. Whether it’s a short-term stay or a long-term stay, these apps will help you a ton when it comes to getting around places and finding things to do!

Table of Contents

Best London Apps for Travel

Citymapper is hands-down one of the best London apps for travel because of how informative it is. This app provides you with various routes for anywhere you want to go in London and their accurate duration. When it comes to routes via the Tube (and bus), it’ll show you an updated timetable and even the best section to sit in! A ll suggested routes, whether it’s by Tube, bus, scooter, cycling, cab or carshare will also show roughly how much it will cost (with walking routes being free of course)! Best of all, they show accessible routes that you can take which is so helpful for disabled people and people with luggage or strollers!

If you’re staying in London for a long while, it’s definitely worth getting an Oyster card. This is essentially a pay-as-you-go travel card which can be used on any Tube line and the bus. Granted, you do have to pay £7 for it, but it’s so worth it if you’ll be exploring London a lot! The Oyster card app simply tells you how much money you have on your Oyster card and also features Tube and Rail maps of London. There are Oyster card top-up machines at every train station and even in a few corner shops, but you can top up your card on the app too!

Santander Cycles

If you’d like to get around the city by bike, then Santander Cycles is the best London app for travel you’d need on your phone! This app allows you to check bike availability (including e-bikes) and the nearest docking station to you. Once you’ve hired a bike on the app, you’ll get sent a code and you can start your bike journey! The app also shows you your recent journeys, charges and even calories that you burned. If you plan on using the Santander bikes often, you can opt for a monthly membership (£20 a month which can be cancelled at any time) or an annual membership (£120).

The app also does weekly prize draws. If you’re lucky enough, you can win free coffee and an annual membership!

AccessAble is an app that provides you with an accessible guide for travelling around London. Once you enter your location and destination, they provide info such as parking, entrance access, ramps/slopes, inside access and if they have accessible toilets. You can set your own accessibility symbols such as level access, stoma friendly, hoist and braille to find places that suit you! There are also pictures of your destination which can be really helpful too!

TFL Go is Transport for London’s (TFL) official app that helps you plan your journeys. The main thing non-Londoners tell me about travelling in London is that navigating the Tube is confusing. So what makes TFL Go one of the best London apps for travel is that it shows you a live Tube map which can help you see your route. It displays live Tube and bus times and best of all, you can turn on step-free mode, which shows you a map of all the tube lines that have step-free access!

Trainline isn’t only the best London app for travel, but probably the best UK app for travel too! You can book tickets for overground trains as well as Thameslink if you’re going to commuter areas outside of London. You can also use Trainline to book direct train tickets from London to places like York , Lincoln , Brighton, Bath, Oxford, Manchester and many other cities and towns around the UK!

How to get from A to B across the busy capital

best app for travelling around london

The 12 - our free newsletter with all the news you need

We have more newsletters

London is a big and busy place and getting around the capital can be a daunting prospect.

Even for born and bred Londoners it's hard to remember all the various bus stops, tube lines, zones and street names.

And that's when things are running smoothly! If a tube strike, street protest or the faintest snow flake falls things can get very chaotic.

To help you stay on top of things, here's a list of some of the most useful apps to guide you around London on foot, bike, train or bus.

Happy exploring!

Google Maps

Ok, it may be an obvious choice, but Google Maps is the king of travel apps.

There is a wealth of information here for users - a detailed map of the whole of London featuring every street name, business, restaurant, bar, museum - you name it, it's there.

Users can track their progress through the capital in with GPS tracking and plot how long it will take to get anywhere on foot, public transport, bike.

The app also provides real-time traffic and public transport updates.

Most places marked on the map can be clicked on to reveal their open hours, phone number, website and Google rating.

You can download the free app for use on Apple or Android phones.

Probably the current king of travel and transport apps. Citymapper offers a similar level of data and travel insights as Google but wraps it up in a user friendly package.

The award-winning app harnesses real time data to help London travellers plot their routes across the city.

A search for a journey between two points will give a wealth of options, whether you want to walk, bike, use only the bus, tube or taxi.

Your route will be plotted out on a map, with the time it takes, the interchanges and (if you're walking or cycling) how many calories you might burn.

You can save journeys for future use (e.g. between work and home), follow the bus you're waiting for in real time, view maps in 3D mode and even see how many trees you've saved by getting out and about on foot.

Versions of the app are also available in a wide range of other cities around the world.

Transport for London Oyster

best app for travelling around london

This official app from Transport for London allows commuters to manage their Oyster card payments through their phones.

Users need an Oyster account to sign into the app and register a card.

Once logged in, you can use the app to add credit to an Oyster card, buy travel cards, check your balance and set up notifications if your season ticket or credit is running low.

UK Bus checker

This highly rated app is a one-stop shop for all your bus travel needs.

It provides route maps, journey planning support and live bus arrival times so you know when you need to get to your departure stop.

If you're riding on the bus you can also track your progress in real time and set alerts to notify you when you need to get off. Handy if you have a habit of nodding off...

A popular app that focuses on getting around London's extensive underground network.

It has a clean design and an easy interface, making it easy to check line statuses, plot journeys, look up live departures, save routes and find your nearest station.

There are additional map views for the Night Tube and rail network and the app also works in offline mode.

Santander Cycles

Still colloquially known as "Boris bikes" (after former Mayor Boris Johnson ), the Santander Cycle scheme lets you hire a bike from hundreds of locations across London for as little as £2.

The scheme's official app aims to making using a bike a smooth experience by registering a bank card for quick payments.

Users can look up the availability of bikes at their nearest docking stations, plot out journeys, and receive notifications on hire costs.

Ofo and Mobike

best app for travelling around london

New to London are Chinese-owned bike sharing apps Ofo and Mobike.

Both work on a dock-less bike hire model meaning cyclists can find, hire and leave their cycles in street locations within set zones.

Ofo currently has the wider coverage of the two apps.

Ofo is available on Apple and Android as is Mobike: Apple and Android .

Uber/Gett/Addison Lee/MyTaxi

best app for travelling around london

There are a wealth of taxi hailing apps to choose from covering London.

Uber is the best known of the e-hailing explosion that has enormously disrupted the taxi market.

Currently operating under a short-term license in the city, Uber has experienced its fair share of controversy over workers rights and passenger safety - prompting several safety upgrades to the app.

The app allows users to hail a driver (often using their own car) and know their fare in advance.

Journey costs are considerable cheaper than a black cab fare, with trips paid for through registered bank cards so no cash changes hands.

Uber is available for free on Apple and Android .

But alongside Uber are several other taxi app options:

Addison Lee: Has one of London's largest fleet of private hire vehicles. Fares are typically higher than Uber. Offers courier and airport transfer services. Free on Apple and Android .

Gett: A black cab ordering app that also allows for ride sharing to help reduce the cost of fares. Free on Apple and Android .

MyTaxi: Previously called Hailo, the app boasts a large fleet of private hire taxis and black cabs. Users can pay in app and pre-order multi-seater and executive class vehicles or arrange airport transfers. Free on Apple and Android .

Kabbee: An app for booking London mini-cabs. Has cheap fares that can be paid for by card, cash or pre-paid account. Free on Apple and Android .

12 Best London Travel Apps for Tourism & Transport

Photo of author

London is a massive city, and for those new to the City, it can be a little overwhelming.

But with the right applications downloaded onto your iPhone or Android device, your trip can be made a lot more comfortable.

Apps are a great additional for exploring a city and can make sure that you don’t get lost.

They can assist you in finding the most popular tourist spots to visit, or help when you travel on the tube – something that most non-Londoners have difficulty with (and even some Londoners if we’re being honest).

Fortunately, most of the useful apps are free when you visit London, and although some are paid, they can still be worth downloading.

Here are some mobile apps available for iPhone and Android that you’ll need to download on your next visit to the UK’s capital.

London is well known for its public transport, but there are various different ways to get around the city.

This includes the tube, the train, London buses, black cabs, cycling routes and more. We’re going to run through all of the must haves for the average person when visiting London.

12 Apps for Getting Around London

Londons public transport is amazing and varied, with the Tube being the best way to travel through the city for most people. \Here’s a few of the best apps to download if you plan on getting the Tube in London.

Tube Map – The best London underground app

The first app that you should download when visiting London is the Tube Map app.

This is an interactive map that allows users to quickly learn the Tube maps of London without getting overwhelmed.

It’s an award-winning navigation application to the London Underground, and the app shows the arrival times, prices on different routes as well as live departures from each tube station too.

You can also use this app to check for delays and closures of certain lines. One of the best things about Tube Maps is that it can be used offline.

Offline maps means you don’t need to worry about phone signal (something that’s few and far between on certain tube lines (looking at you, Jubilee line).

TfL Go (The TFL app)

If you want to download the official app for those wanting to access London via Tubes, you need to download TfL Go.

It’s worth downloading the TFL app as the map includes a tube map, as well as live bus and trains times to all stations too. It also features the quietest hours to travel if you want to avoid rush hour.

This is a useful app to download if you plan to walk/bike around London on your trip too. You can download the app on iOS or Android to help you find the easiest route around London.

London Tube Live App

This is an official London Underground map that has sections for each train line with live arrivals, and it’s really useful for keeping up with live times.

Though it doesn’t have much more information than the two previously mentioned apps, it gives a unique view of the iconic tube map that many users prefer.

It’s available on both iOS and Android devices, and it’s worth downloading this award winning navigation app when exploring London.

London Bus Live Countdown

The bus is one of the most convenient transport methods when you’re travelling in London.

And if you plan to travel by bus, the London Bus Live Countdown app works well when showing the entire route for buses.

It also shows the arrivals and departures of all the buses across London, as well as well as the delays and cancellation details if there’s any issues.

The London Bus app also has an online travel planner that can give you information about where and how to go.

You can easily put your bus names into the favourites section within the app too if you plan on making the same journey more than once.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers

Though river transport isn’t as well known in London as other major cities, London does have a large river running through it, making boat the best option in certain circumstances.

Uber Boats by the Thames Clippers service is a river transport system that runs exclusively on the Thames.

You can use their mobile phone app to make a booking, and there’s also a website that you can use to find the stops and plan your route .

The app lets the user book tickets, but you can also view departure schedules using the app too.

It’s worth making this part of your trip to London, as travelling across the river Thames will allow you to see London in a different light.

Not a common app used across other cities, Virtuo has become more popular over the past year or so.

Virtuo basically helps you to rent your car easier, so you can both rent your car out and rent cars from others too.

It is the most popular phone-less rental vehicle service in the UK – it allows people to rent a luxury car in London without having to pick up keys, as you can unlock the car from the convenience of their smartphones.

Because Virtuo’s apps are essentially digital keys for the vehicle, you can easily pick up your car with just the phone.

It’s a handy app to download, with the only downside being a high charge for any additional mileage that you do.

Uber is the most popular ride sharing app in London, and it’s an essential download if you can’t access public transport.

Though not as useful when you’re in Central London, it becomes increasingly important when you go outside of Zone 1 and Zone 2.

There’s not much to say about Uber – it’s a great app that’s essential for route planning.

You can also check out some alternative taxi apps for London if you want to get a black cab whilst you’re visiting the city.

AccessAble for Disabilities

As with most major cities, London is trying to become more accessible for those with disabilities.

AccessAble is an ideal mobile app to download if you plan to travel around London with someone in a wheelchair, or even those that may struggle with stairs.

This mobile app will provide you all of the precise information needed when it comes to accessibility, and its workforce is trained surveyors that actually evaluate the area.

It’s a must download for those that want to visit an accessible London.

Citymapper London app

If you plan on visiting London attractions on your bicycle, Citymapper is the best app for cycling when it comes to identifying London routes.

The Citymapper app has the most data when it comes to cycle paths, which is really important when it comes to a route planner.

The city is becoming more and more cycle friendly in a plan to combat high pollution.

Citymapper is more than just a cycling app, and it has information on a lot more than just cycle routes.

Though, it’s the best journey planner if you need the ability to navigate London overground on your bicycle – you may also want to download Santander Cycles too.

The Santander cycles app will allow you to rent bicycles short term in London, which can be much quicker than walking.

All you need is the bike release code and you’ll be able to rent the bike, and return it to another Santander cycles stop later in the day.

Natural History Museum App

The Natural History Museum App is an excellent resource for visiting many of the finest museums in the city.

There are both free and paid versions of the app, but the free app is definitely worth downloading if you want to explore the NHM.

The app provides a guide which walks you through your journey around the National History Museum, and it gives you a map of each section of the Museum. There are also some free tour options you can use within the app too.

The app has a lot of information about many London landmarks and features, and you’ll find a ton of information in this section that’s devoted not just to the Natural History Museum but all of the museums around London.

When you explore London, this is undoubtedly one of the best London apps to download if you want to make the most of your time in the capital.

Stagedoor App

London isn’t London without a visit to the theatre, and if you plan to take in a show then Stagedoor is the best app for booking theatre tickets in London.

You can buy tickets directly via the app – it’s a mix of musicals and plays, and though many of them are well known at big venues in the West End, there are some hidden gems in amongst them too.

It’s an excellent app to download if you want to watch the Lion King or the Book of Mormon on your London trip .

London Architecture Guide

London is one of the best places in the world for sightseeing, but few people really know the history of the City.

If you’re interested in the history of London’s buildings, then the London Architecture Guide app is worth downloading.

Within the app you’ll find features of contemporary and historical buildings which you can then explore you can view buildings according to periods, style and architecture – there are also essays about British architectural history within the app too.

You’ll find commentary from some of the most well known and famous architect critics in the app too, so it’s worth downloading if London history is interesting to you.

We’ve tried to include all of the best apps in the UK when it comes to getting the tube, travel and tourism in general. These apps can help to make your visit a little easier.

Downloading the right travel apps when you’re in London is essential, and hopefully this guide will make your trip through London that little bit easier.

1. Visit London App

This is the official Visit London app which has both articles on things to do, events going on during your stay, and sometimes offers and deals across the city.

best app for travelling around london

It’s particularly good for if you want to know what events are happening around you on a particular weekend, which is something you sometimes can’t plan for super far in advance if it’s just a pop-up market or something like that.

Use it to scroll through ideas while waiting at a bus stop or just to keep you updated on local events, but have it downloaded.

🛎 Still looking for somewhere to stay in London?

My favorite hotel in London for all visitors is the Strand Palace ( click here to check prices ). ⭐⭐⭐⭐

2. CityMapper: one of the best apps for London

This is the ultimate in London navigation.

best app for travelling around london

Plug in anywhere you want to go and it will give you lots of different options on how to get there, including the price and how long it should take.

Easy to understand icons make it easy to figure out what you’re doing, and when it tells you to take a bus or the tube, it will tell you what number/line and how long you’ll need to wait until the next one.

This is a favorite of not just visitors, but Londoners, so download CityMapper before you leave and get familiar with it so you can just plug, pick a route, and go, once you’re in London!

IMPORTANT: are you coming to the UK from abroad?

In case you’re reading this from outside the UK and will be a foreign visitor here, you need to know these 2 things to stay safe and save money.

  • Travel insurance – you need it when going overseas! I use this site to get the best quotes and purchase my packages from. Do not skip this – having medical coverage abroad as well as other coverage in case of missed flights, lost luggage, etc is essential. As I said, I have never gone wrong using this site .
  • International debit cards without fees – do not get stuck paying extortionate foreign fees when using your card abroad (and the UK is almost all card these days). I use the Wise debit and travel card which you can apply and learn more about here .

3. Tube Map – London: best travel apps in London

best app for travelling around london

This app is specifically for the tube.

You’ll get tube maps galore, easily navigated so you can check it without carrying a paper map around, as well as a section where you can see the first and last tube times for any stop and live departure information.

What more can I say?

This map is invaluable for anyone taking the tube in London , which is almost everyone!

4. London Live Bus

best app for travelling around london

London’s bus system can be confusing for a new visitor, but it’s easily figured out with an app like London Live Bus that will help you figure out the route and options for each stop you’re at.

You can also type in your location and it will show you the bus stops nearest you (each bus stop is lettered, making it easy to find by looking at the letter on top of the bus stop and comparing it to which letter bus stop you’re supposed to be at!)

You can also see the live times of when the next bus is coming to your stop and where it’s headed.

Seriously, this is one of the best apps to visit London!

5. Google Maps

This is a basic one, but I sometimes prefer Google Maps to CityMapper for walking directions, and you’ll do a lot of walking in London.

You can also use it for public transportation directions by choosing the icon that looks like a bus/train.

It’s likely that you’re already familiar with Google Maps and use it in your daily life, so make sure to keep using it while in London.

6. Rome2Rio

best app for travelling around london

When you’re thinking about taking London day trips or going a bit further out like Hampton Court Palace or Windsor Castle , Rome2Rio comes in handy!

This transportation app will help you figure out your journey including buses and trains outside of London – the London bus and tube app will obviously work for inside the city, but once you’re out of the city limits, those apps can’t help you!

With Rome2Rio, you can see all of your transportation options for outside of London, and it will also give you the comparisons when it comes to drive time and the time it will take on public transportation, for example.

7. Globe Convert

best app for travelling around london

When you’re making transactions in a foreign currency, it can be helpful to have a currency converter on hand to figure out how much money you’re spending in London so you don’t get hit by crazy shocking figures when you get home!

This is a great and easy to use currency converter app, though there are plenty more – just make sure to download one before you go.

Many will work offline, so you don’t need to be connected to plug in the amount and let it do the work for you based on the current exchange rates.

best app for travelling around london

Uber operates the same in London as it does anywhere else, and many people find it useful and prefer to get the cheaper prices of Uber instead of using a London taxi.

If you’re not familiar with Uber in your home city, play around with it before you go to make sure you understand how to order a ride when you’re in London, but if you’ve used it before, no practice needed!

You’ll just be taken to the Tower of London rather than your local neighborhood restaurant, and that’s something to smile about!

9. Met Office Weather

best app for travelling around london

If you don’t already have a weather app on your phone that you like, try Met Office Weather.

The weather in London is constantly changing, and it could be super sunny in the morning and grey and foggy later in the day.

I always check my weather app before getting ready for the day to see what is coming up, as well as checking it when I’m out and about to see if I need to change plans or head indoors.

It’s one of the best apps for London tourists.

10. Addison Lee: one of the best apps for visiting London

best app for travelling around london

One of the best apps in London for people who want to preorder car transfer services/taxis is the Addison Lee app.

I recommend Addison Lee to all London visitors, as they’re cheaper than hailing a black cab while also being more professional than Uber.

The great part is you can prebook a ride in advance, unlike Uber or a taxi where you basically need to try for it right when you need it.

So if you know that you need to be picked up at 5pm to get to the airport in time for your flight, you can preschedule it in the app and know that the driver will arrive at 5pm and not be desperately trying to hail a taxi at that time.

11. London Theatre Direct Tickets: one of the best London apps

best app for travelling around london

London Theatre Direct is a legitimate and trustworthy website selling theatre directs in London, often at discounted prices.

The app will help you see what’s on sale, what is currently playing in the West End, and how many tickets are available.

The other way to purchase London theatre tickets is to go to each theatre’s website individually, which means you may miss what else is on or not get the best deals.

Download the London Theatre Direct app and then, even if you’re out and about, you can still purchase theatre tickets and get them send straight to your phone.

12. Voice Map

best app for travelling around london

Want to explore London with a guided tour, but don’t want to be following another gaggle of tourists around?

Enter: Voice map!

This app will let you take tours of various places across London, narrated by helpful experts and locals, so that you can learn more about the place you’re visiting without needing to prebook onto a guided tour.

This is also fantastic for solo travelers who don’t want to join big tours, as well as those looking to save a bit of money while in London.

13. First Table

best app for travelling around london

Restaurants book up quickly in London, particularly during peak times of the year. While it is possible to find reservations and to eat last minute, if there are certain places you have your heart set on, booking is a must-do.

Use an app like First Table to see what’s available and to make multiple restaurant bookings through one app rather than having to use each of their separate platforms.

The beauty of this app is that you can also see other availability, so if your reservation time isn’t available on one day, it’ll show you which ones it is available on.

It’s one of the best apps to download for London foodies, for sure!

best app for travelling around london

Cheaper than Uber, but with a similar concept, Bolt helps you hail “Bolts” in London to get you where you need to go.

This app is known for offering more discounts, but with longer wait times than Uber, so download both and see which one you like better.

15. Ticketswap

best app for travelling around london

Many visitors come to London for specific events, concerts, and festivals throughout the year.

If you’re looking to snag last minute tickets to an event or can no longer use your ticket, use an app like TicketSwap to securely sell your tickets or to purchase them from people who can no longer go.

16. Toilets4London: must-have apps in London

best app for travelling around london

This is probably one of the most important apps for London in this list!

When you’re out and about during the day, what do you usually need the most after awhile?

That’s right, the toilet!

Particularly in large cities, it can be hard to find free toilets that aren’t gross, if you can even find them at all.

This app will help you locate the nearest bathrooms so that you can build it into your itinerary or know where you need to make a mad dash to.

17. FreeNow

best app for travelling around london

Another ride sharing app, Free Now is used in Europe and offers the ability to book private vehicles (like Uber or Bolt) or a black cab.

This is a great feature, as you don’t have to stand on a street corner waving down a black cab if you’d prefer to ride with a London cabbie, and you can also see the price comparisons between the private rideshares and the taxi.

It will also show you other options it picks up, like e-Scooters if they’re around.

18. Rick Steves Audio Tour

best app for travelling around london

Rick Steves is known for being one of the travel gurus of Europe, and you can carry him and his guides around in your pocket with this helpful London app.

He’s got specific tours on places like the British Museum, or more general information regarding culture, currency, and more.

I prefer this app specifically for the tours available, as you know they’re coming from a trusted source and it’s easy enough to do a search for a tour if you find yourself in a museum or area of London you’d like to learn more about, but don’t have time for a full, official guided tour.

19. Open Table

best app for travelling around london

Another dining app for London, Open Table gives you the chance to book restaurants from the comfort of wherever you are in London using your cellphone.

It’ll give you suggestions, so you can see what’s available at the time you’re wanting to eat, or you can search for a specific restaurant to see the options.

Open Table is used around the world, and it is definitely one of the more popular reservation apps used in London town.

20. Tube Exits

best app for travelling around london

Whether you’re a transportation nerd or you just really like to be efficient, the Tube Exits app is a wonderful idea.

It will tell you exactly which carriage and door to stand on to most efficiently leave the train and depart the tube station, and if you don’t know why that’s a good idea, you probably haven’t traversed one of the tube platforms at Oxford Circus Stations during rush hour before.

It’s not a must-have for the average traveler, but it’s definitely something to impress your travel buddies with and can be fun to use (and a lifesaver during peak travel season and rush hour!).

21. Trip Advisor

best app for travelling around london

You know it, you love it, and now you can have it in your pocket.

The TripAdvisor app is a great way to be able to check ratings for attractions, restaurants, parks, and more while you’re in London.

We use it when we find a restaurant randomly and want to see what the reviews are like, as sometimes looks can be deceiving (and this goes in both directions).

What else should I not miss in London?

If you’re visiting London soon, here’s a very brief rundown of a few of my other favorites to make sure you don’t miss anything!

  • Hidden London Walking Tour – this tour is the absolute best if you want to see London in a different light and uncover hidden nooks, crannies, and histories that you won’t get on your normal, run-of-the-mill London walking tour. Click here to check prices and book.
  • Historical Westminster Walking Tour with Churchill War Rooms – if you’re a history buff or even mildly interested in all of the insane things that have happened in London, particular during the wars, you have to book this tour which is an absolute bargain for the tour + entry to the Churchill War Rooms (basically two must-dos in one). Click here to check prices and book .
  • Cutest London Afternoon Tea on a Bus – want to see the sights and enjoy afternoon tea at the same time on the upper deck? Yes, absolutely you do. This afternoon tea is a real delight and helps you get out and about while also putting your pinkies up. Click here to check prices and book.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system.

The best apps to explore London

We've rounded up some of the best apps to help you find the best places to visit in london: the best food, the best entertainment and the best ways to get around the city, published: monday 29th november 2021.

London is one of the most vibrant and beautiful cities in the world, but it is also huge, and even locals sometimes need help finding their way around. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps out there that have been designed to help you find your way around.

If you are planning a trip to London and want to make the most out of it, here are some of the best apps that you can use to find the  best places to visit in London, the best food, the best entertainment and the best ways to get around the city.

Apps for travelling around the city

London is a big place, so it's best to be prepared. Here are some of the best apps that can help you to travel around the city with ease:

Citymapper : If you need one app on your travels to London, this is it. Citymapper will show you all the travel options available, including cycling, black cabs, Uber and even electric scooters. It will also tell you the fastest and cheapest way to get there.

Tube Map : The London tube is iconic, but it might be difficult to use if you have never been on it before. Make sure that you are prepared with a mobile version of the tube map, so you can work out tube times and where you need to be.

Apps for popular attractions to visit

You will never run out of things to do in London, so make sure you see all of the most important attractions with the help of these apps:

Visit London:  This is the official London app, and it has everything you need to find the top attractions. With a handpicked list of the top things to do, maps and great deals, this app will make it incredibly easy for you to find the best attractions and how to get there.

London Architecture Guide : Are you a lover of old buildings? Whether you want to brush up on your historical knowledge or just want to learn more about the city, the London Architecture Guide has an interactive map that will teach you all about the fascinating history of different structures.

Apps for entertainment

Hype : Hype is an events app that is optimised for the area you are based in. This clever app will show you the hottest events that are happening around you and will show you any ticket deals. It will also show you the best shops, bars and restaurants in your area.

Online Gaming: Although London is full of cool things to do, it also involves a lot of travel and waiting in queues to get to the top spots. There are plenty of gaming apps that adults can play around the city from League of Legends: Wild Rift to Candy Crush, and from strategy games to casino apps. London tourists can enjoy playing games and online slots  on the go while they are on the bus or are waiting in line for the museum.

Apps for food and drink

There are thousands upon thousands of restaurants in London, and some are better than others. However, when you’re travelling around the city, it can be difficult to tell which restaurants are tourist traps and which are amazing restaurants. Fortunately, there are many useful  food and drink apps that can help you find the tastiest places to go in London:

OpenTable : Struggle to find a table no more with OpenTable. OpenTable has a list of all the available tables wherever you want to go, meaning that you can find the restaurants that you want to eat at and whether or not there are tables available.

HappyCow : If you’re looking for meat-free dining during your London stay, then HappyCow is one of the best mobile apps to have on your phone. Their mobile app can help you find the best places to eat in London that have veg-options, or vegan and vegetarian food, on their menu.

How to Get Around London: Your Ultimate Transport Guide for 2024

best app for travelling around london

Looking to get around London? Whether you’re navigating getting around London as a tourist for the first time or just need a brush up on the London transportation system, here’s how to navigate the London public transport system like a pro — from a Londoner!

This post may contain affiliate links. Check out my  Disclosure & Privacy Policy  for more information.

Travelling to London can be a daunting experience, especially if you’re unfamiliar with getting around the city.

With its sprawling metropolis and countless attractions, getting from A to B in London can seem like an impossible task. But don’t fret!

Over the years I’ve learned the ins and outs of London transport (and may or may have gotten on several wrong tubes along the way). Seven years later I can proudly say getting around London is a breeze, but there’s definitely a learning curve.

This London transport guide will provide all the information you need on getting around London using public transportation. From the tube, buses, trains, the infamous black cabs and more — here’s everything you need to know to make your way around London as easily as possible. Let’s dive in!

How to Get Around London: Your Ultimate Transport Guide to the City

How-to-get-around-London

How London Zones Work

Before you dive into the world of London transport, it’s important to know how the transport system is set up.

The zone system divides up London into nine circular zones that extend out from Zone 1 (Central London) to Zone 9 (the outskirts of London).

London-Public-Transit-Map

As you can see on the London transit map above, these zones are used by many forms of public transport in London in order to calculate fares and determine which areas are served by each service.

So for example, if you’re travelling within Zone 1 by tube, as of 2023 it would cost you £2.50 on your Oyster Card.

But if you’re travelling from Zone 1 to Zone 3 by tube, it would cost you £2.90 on your Oyster Card.

Knowing how the zone system works can help you make sense of getting around London quickly and efficiently. So know it well!

P.S – If you’re just getting around London as a tourist you’ll most likely be staying in ‘Zone 1-2’ during your trip (unless you’re going somewhere like, for example, Kew Gardens in Zone 3 or Hampton Court Palace in Zone 6).

The Best Transit Apps for Getting Around London

Citymapper London App

Before bracing yourself for the mighty world of the London transport system, you’ll want to have an app or two handy, or in my case, just one. Citymapper .

It’s a public transit app that started in 2011 (in London actually!) and is hands down the best way to get around the city.

I’ve used it for years without a glitch, but if in doubt Google Maps or Apple Maps will work too.

How Do You Pay for Public Transport in London?

The easiest way to pay for your rides on London public transport is by getting an Oyster Card or using your Contactless Payment Card.

Both cards use the same ‘tap-in’ payment system, that you’ll use on most public transport in the city.

oyster-card-for-getting-around-london

The Oyster card is a physical card that you top up with money at any Tube station or online — and it’s always best if you plan ahead and pre-load your card before travelling .

You can purchase an Oyster card at most airports (except London Southend), or any Tube or National Rail station in London as well as most newsagents and convenience stores throughout the city. It’s also possible to purchase an Oyster Card online through the official Transport for London website .

Once you have your card, simply top it up with money, and you’re ready to start getting around London quickly, safely and conveniently!

Alternatively, contactless payment cards are linked directly to your bank account and allow you to tap into stations and buses without having to worry about topping up beforehand. Contactless payments can be made using debit or credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or other mobile wallets such as Samsung Pay.

The best thing about using your Oyster and contactless card are the pay-as-you-go daily and weekly caps .

These were made to limit the amount that London tourists and locals alike pay on transport every day and week, with a daily cap of £7.70 between Zone 1-2 and £38.40 weekly for Zone 1-2 (meaning you’ll never pay more than this for unlimited travel within these zones), for London buses the daily cap is £4.95.

The cap amount depends on what zones you’re travelling to that day and your passenger type, so be sure to check what your cap fare would be here .

What about Travelcards and Visitor Oysters?

Visitor-Oyster-in-London

You may have also heard of something in London called ‘ Travelcards ‘.

When purchased these enable unlimited travel within certain zones, however unless you’re travelling non-stop in London the cost of Travelcards usually isn’t worth it in comparison to using your Oyster or Contactless card.

Visitor Oyster Cards on the other hand are designed specifically for visitors who need short-term access to transportation services in the city and also come with special discounts to various London experiences and restaurants.

Overall, unless you’re eligible for discounts on the Oyster card or want to make use of the discounts on the Visitor Oyster Card , the easiest way to pay for London transport will be your contactless card as you can use it instantly straight from your phone as soon as you arrive in London (as long as you have your Apple Pay or Google Pay set up).

How Much is Public Transport in London?

London-public-transit-cost

The price of public transport London varies depending on the method of transit you use as well as the distance you’re travelling to between Zone 1-9.

The tube and Overground starts from £2.50 a journey and the bus from £1.65. But to get a realistic number on what your journey will cost I highly suggest using the TfL Fare Calculator so you can price your journey beforehand.

P.S – Citymapper will also tell you how much any journey you take will cost!

Discounts on Travelling in London

London-train-ticket-view

Like most things that involve London life, getting around the city can get expensive. So here’s a few ways to save on transport in London.

What’s the Best Way to Travel Around London?

best-way-to-get-around-London

The best way to travel around London will depend on your specific journey, but my favourite way is walking .

London has SO many beautiful hidden corners that you’ll simply miss on public transportation.

My love for walking in London aside, in general, using the London Underground or the London buses will be the best way to get around the city.

The tube (London Underground) is usually very reliable, even with the recent TfL strikes over the past year, along with the London buses which are a great way to experience London like a true local.

Both also have incredible connections to almost an place in the city, unlike the Overground, DLR (Docklands Light Railway), River Boat or many other London transport options we’ll run through in a bit.

10 Ways to Get Around London

best-ways-to-get-around-London

The London Underground (a.k.a. the Tube)

Tube-London

The Tube is the most iconic form of public transport in London (and for good reason). It’s been around since 1863, and today it’s a vital part of getting around the city.

The Tube consists of 11 lines that cover 270 stations over 402 kilometres (250 miles) of track and can take you to nearly every corner of the capital, making it one of the best ways to get around London.

London Tube Lines:

  • Bakerloo Line
  • Central Line
  • Circle Line
  • District Line
  • Hammersmith & City Line
  • Jubilee Line
  • Metropolitan Line
  • Northern Line
  • Piccadilly line
  • Victoria line
  • (NEW) Elizabeth Line

If you’re getting around London as a tourist, you should be able to get to the majority of places on your itinerary through the tube alone (although I still highly suggest taking a ride on the London buses and walking if your location is close enough).

Before you take your first ride, I suggest having a look at the tube map and familarising yourself with the lines.

To catch the tube to your destination you’ll need to know which line and which direction you’ll need to take (Eastbound or Westbound or Northbound or Southbound), followed by the branch of the line (i.e the end destination of the line).

So, for example, if I wanted to from Leicester Square to Hampstead , my directions would say I need to get the ‘Northern Line’ going ‘Northbound’ on the branch that’s going towards ‘Edgeware’ .

best app for travelling around london

Step-by-step here’s how you would get there on the tube once you have the directions:

  • Walk to Leicester Square station
  • Tap in with your Oyster, Visitor Oyster or Contactless card on the yellow reader
  • Follow the signs to the Northern Line
  • Go to the platform that says ‘Northbound’ on the Northern Line
  • Look at the digital display board on the platform screen and make sure you’re getting on the tube that is going towards the end destination listed on your directions
  • Get off at Hampstead
  • Follow the signs to the exit
  • Tap out with your Oyster, Visitor Oyster or Contactless card on the yellow reader
  • Give yourself an internal high-five for figuring out the London tube system
  • Explore Hampstead!

Mimic these steps for any journey you’re taking on the tube until it becomes like clockwork!

Safety is a also top priority on the Tube network with CCTV cameras located throughout all stations and on every train carriage. Emergency help points are also positioned at regular intervals along each platform with constant monitoring to make sure any potential problems are quickly identified and dealt with. If you’re ever feeling lost the TfL staff is also more than willing to help you get back on your route.

There’s also a night tube service on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines if you’re coming home late from a night out in London.

P.S. – Don’t forget to read my tube etiquette guide !

London-buses-transit-guide

With over 8,000 buses operating in the city, getting from one place to another on public transport in the city has never been easier.

Buses are a great way to explore all that London has to offer as they provide access to some of the city’s best attractions and views of the capital (check out the best bus routes for sightseeing in London! ).

Like I mentioned before, you’ll also get unlimited rides on any London bus journey within an hour through the Hopper Fare , so for example, if you take 3 buses across the city in one hour, it’ll still be £1.65.

To use the bus — simply load up the directions to your destination and catch your correct bus from the bus stop (for example, ‘Bus 148 to White City, leaving from Stop P).

best app for travelling around london

When you get on tap your Oyster, Visitor Oyster or contactless card on the yellow reader near the bus driver and take your seat (you won’t need to tap-out like you do on the tube).

Although taking the bus usually works out longer than taking the tube, it’s a great way to see London from a new perspective and get to more secluded areas in the city.

P.S – Try getting the top left or right seat on the double-decker buses for the best views!

DLR (Docklands Light Railway)

Docklands-Light-Railway-DLR

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is a light rail network in London, connecting parts of East and South East London.

It operates using driverless automated trains, with easy-to-understand route maps that make getting around this part of the city much smoother.

The DLR is fully integrated with other forms of public transportation too, including the Tube and bus services, so you may end up using it as part of your journey from time to time. Like if you’re going from Central London to the beautiful Greenwich !

Tube-and-DLR-Directions

This makes getting around this part of London easier than ever before, as you can easily switch between transport networks while using the same payment card and ticketing system.

Unlike the Tube or bus, it also runs above ground on its own tracks, meaning that it has no traffic congestion to delay your journey and no waiting for traffic lights, with great views along the way. From the ExCel Centre to Canary Wharf, Greenwich and more, it’s a lovely way to get from point A to point B when needed.

London-Overground

The London Overground is a suburban and inner-city network that services many locations in the Greater London area.

It covers a large part of Central London and includes lines like the East London Line (ELL), North London Line (NLL), West London Line (WLL) and more. These lines also lead to popular neighbourhoods such as Shoreditch High Street Station , Camden Town , Angel Islington, and Old Street Station.

Getting around on the London Overground is very easy and follows the same ‘tap-in, tap-out’ system as the tube. Trains don’t come as often as the Underground so you may find yourself waiting a bit longer, they also move a bit slower too — but of course as it’s the ‘Over’ground, this means London views!

Rail Services

London-Train-Transportation

The National Rail services in London play a key role in getting around the capital. The National Rail network consists of over 2,500 stations and more than 11,000 miles (17,700 kilometers) of track across Great Britain…that’s a lot of rail services!

Lucky for you, in London there’s only four main ones to rememeber —  The Southeastern Railway, Thameslink, The Southern Railway and The Southwestern Railway, i.e the major railway networks in the city.

These offer frequent services from many points in the city in addition to destinations across the entire UK and many London airports.

For rail journeys within London you can use your Oyster card or contactless, but you’ll need to purchase a seperate physical or digital ticket if you’ll be taking a train from London to elsewhere in the UK.

You can save 30% on all train travel in the UK if you’re 16-25 or 26-30 by getting a Railcard .

You’re also likely to use a train if you’re coming from the airport to Central London, but other than that you won’t be using the train often if you’re getting around London as a tourist.

If you’re looking to do a few London day or weekend trips away from the city, I’d suggest catching the train from Paddington, Waterloo or London Bridge station. Make sure you use Trainline to find the cheapest train tickets !

River Bus Services

River-Bus-Services-London

For a more unique way to get around London, try a river bus !

London has one of the largest networks of navigable waterways in Europe, which includes the famous River Thames and other small streams, rivers and canals.

This network is both picturesque and practical, providing public transport in London for passengers like no other.

The most popular river boat services in London are run by Thames Clippers , who operate regular daily cruises from Embankment Pier to many locations along the Thames such as Tower Bridge, Greenwich, Canary Wharf and Woolwich. Prices vary depending on how far you’re travelling along the route but it’s generally quite affordable for tourists; single adult fares cost about £5-£7 per journey or £9-£15 return tickets and they accept Oyster and contactless cards .

Thames Clippers also offer various combined tickets which provide discounted prices when travelling on multiple boats or getting off at multiple stops – they even have an Oyster card reader installed on their ticket machines so you can top up your card while onboard.

Apart from Thames Clippers there are loads of amazing river cruises in London that will allow you to experience the city from a new perspective, in style!

P.S – Due to their slightly higher price point in comparison to the tube, London buses etc. you won’t often find locals using river boats for their daily commutes, but if you live here it’s a great option if you’re ever looking to mix things up! You can check out more TfL river bus services here .

Black-Cabs-in-London

London’s black cabs are also a popular (and expensive) way of getting around the city, offering a convenient and reliable transport service for both locals and tourists alike.

Black cab drivers must pass extensive tests known as ‘the knowledge’ in order to get their license, so they are highly experienced in getting you from A to B with minimal fuss.

There are two main types of black cabs in London, the traditional TX4 and the newer LEVC electric models — both offer a spacious interior for up to 6 passengers with plenty of room for luggage or shopping bags. Most have built-in payment terminals accepting credit/debit cards and Apple/Android pay options; but you can pay in cash if preferred.

Black cabs can be hailed on the street by flagging them down or you can use apps like Uber or Gett to hail one from the app.

The cost of a journey varies depending on how far you’re travelling, but generally speaking every mile is about £6.50 to £11.20 (roughly 6-13 minutes) and prices are 10% higher in the evening.

It’s also worth noting that while getting around by black cabs is usually very safe, I always recommend checking the driver’s ID badge before getting into your ride.

Santander-Bikes-London

London is a great city for getting around by bicycle, with a huge network of dedicated cycle lanes and bike paths for cyclists (although we’re no Copenhagen yet).

If you’re new to London or just getting into cycling then the best place to start is to understand the Cycleways which comprises hundreds of miles of dedicated cycle lanes throughout London. You can also download and plan your route ahead of time .

To rent a bike simply find a Santander Cycles station near you or check out other options like Lime’s E-scooters and E-bike rentals .

London drivers can be a bit unforgiving, so make sure you know the Highway Code while you’re out on the road. For example all cyclists must keep left unless they’re passing another cyclist; and pedestrians always have right of way (even if they don’t look like they’re paying attention!). This is particularly true in busy pedestrian areas such as Oxford Street or Trafalgar Square.

Overall cycling around London is a fantastic way to explore the city and save on travel, with bike hires starting from less than £2.

Hampstead-to-Alexandra Palace-Walk

Getting around London on foot is a great way to explore the city and experience its sights, sounds and culture.

Walking allows you to take in your surroundings at a leisurely pace (something that let’s just say the tube doesn’t always allow…), getting up close and personal with the bustling metropolis that makes up London. Plus getting around by walking is one of the most cost-effective ways to get from A-B — no tickets or fares required!

When getting around London by foot it’s important to plan your route carefully beforehand so you know exactly where you’re going. With apps like Citymapper you can find the best routes and the estimated time it’ll take to reach your destination.

If you’re exploring Central London, you’ll also find most locations are in walking distance from each other. For example, walking from Soho to Covent Garden will take you just 15 minutes! And we all know Big Ben to Tower Bridge is just an excuse to do a lovely walk along South Bank .

Just make sure to pack your comfortable shoes!

P.S – I’ve got plenty of custom London walking tours if you’re looking for an interesting route

Bonus: Cable Car

Cable-Car-London

The newly renamed IFS Cloud Cable Car offers a unique way to get around London while getting stunning views of the city and the River Thames.

Spanning across the river between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, it’s an incredibly efficient, low-cost and convenient form of transport that can take you on a stunning journey across London in a matter of minutes.

You can pay for your ride via your Oyster card or contactless and ride with up to 10 passengers at a time. Although the ride is only about 10 minutes, there’s plenty of Instagram opportunities and breathtaking views to take in along the way, including the likes of the O2 Arena, Canary Wharf and iconic landmarks such as Tower Bridge and the City Hall if you look close enough.

I’ll admit, this isn’t a London transport option you’d use on a daily basis, but if you’re looking for a new way to see the city, this is it!

Accessibility & London Transport

Accessibility-TfL-London

Although using London’s transport network is an incredibly convenient and straightforward way to get around the city, it can be more difficult for people who may require extra assistance or support. Fortunately, London is getting more accessible every year.

The majority of London’s public transport offer wheelchair access , as well as other facilities such as ramps, lifts and audible announcements. All buses in London also feature low floors which make getting on and off easier for wheelchair users.

Additionally, most tube stations have been redesigned to include new tactile maps, Braille signs and audio-visual systems to help passengers find their way around with greater ease.

You can also use the TfL website to plan your accessible journey and find out more .

Final Tips on Using Public Transport in London

Car-iin-Greenwich

  • Always ‘Mind the Gap’ when you’re on the tube and stick to the right side of the escalator for standing and the left side for walking
  • Don’t forget to check how close two destinations in London are to each other — or you may miss out on a lovely walk!
  • Stick to exploring 1-2 areas of London at a time to save on your transportation costs and time

Whew — that was LONG! But hopefully now you feel more prepared than ever to tackle the London transport system.

Like I said, once you do it a few times you really do get into the swing of things. And we all know getting around London by public transportation is the only way to be a true Londoner (at least if you ask me!).

Best apps for london – download before you go.

This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here

Last updated October 2020

Once you have booked your flights, planned your itinerary and sorted out your accommodation for London, don’t forget to download some handy apps to your phone.

There are thousands of London apps to help you with everything from navigating the tube to booking theatre tickets. I have chosen my favourite and best apps for London and some runners up that are worth chewing up some storage space on your phone.

Best apps for getting around London

Citymapper  [iOS and Android, free to download]

The Citymapper app is brilliant for getting you from point A to point B via any mode of transport – tube, train, bus, taxi, bike, walk, ferry, etc  – and letting you know how much it will cost.

You can choose the fastest or cheapest route or a specific method of transport. Where possible the app uses live data and can recalculate your route to account for any disruptions.

It will even tell you the closest transport options to you if you happened to get lost.  An added bonus is the app is available for many other cities in Europe and across the globe.

Google maps [iOS and Android, free to download]

Where would we be without our trusty Google maps? Lost! That’s what. If you don’t want to chew up lots of data make sure to set up your offline maps before you go.

Uber  [iOS and Android, free to download]

Uber is back in London after a lengthy ban (you can read about it here ) Thank goodness because Ubers are often the most available and convenient way to get around town if you don’t want to use the public transport network. Use it as you would in your home town or city.

Gett [iOS + Android]

Order, track and pay for black cabs – my favorite way to travel in London. Black cabs are one of the more expensive ways to get around the city but if you have a large group, lots of luggage or a stroller or wheelchair they are well worth the extra expense. You do not need to collapse your stroller – you just wheel it in the taxi. Genius.

You get up to £5 credit for your first ride with this Gett link

Best app for booking tours and attractions in London

Get Your Guide [iOS and Android, free to download]

Search, select and pay for all your London activities online using this handy app that also holds your ticket information. From skipping the line entry tickets for St Paul’s Cathedral or a street art walking tour , there are activities for every visitor to London.

It’s great if, like me, you don’t like carrying around paper vouchers and want to manage as much as possible on your smart phone. To read our full review of Get Your Guide – click here

Best app for restaurant reservations in London

Open Table    [iOS and Android, free to download]

Make instant reservations and access deals at some of London’s iconic restaurants with this easy to use app. You can also browse by cuisine, location, availability and price and read reviews to help you decide where to eat.

An example of a current deal: 3 courses and 2 glasses of wine at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester for £60 per person. Note – you really need to be quite well organised to book the best restaurants so take heed or take note of the next app.

Best app for for last minute and high end restaurant reservations in London

Velocity [iOS only currently, free to download]

If you have not been super organised and secured your reservation for The River Cafe, Hakkasan or other restaurants on your London wish list, this app reveals available tables at some of the hottest places in town for same and next day bookings.

Best app for what’s on in London

Time Out London app [iOS and Android, free to download]

For over 50 years, Time Out has been the definitive guide to what’s on in London. Download the app to learn the events happening in the city during your stay including festivals, theater, concerts and more.

Best app for London theatre bookings

London Theatre Direct   [iOS only, free to download] Your trip to London would not be complete without catching at least one show. With the London Theatre app you can browse musicals, plays, opera and ballet listings and read reviews to help you decide what you would like to see. Then continue in the app to review seating plans and book seats for your favourite show.

How to access data in London

All these apps are fantastic resources but you will need data to make the most of them. Here are the top ways to use your phone data in London

  • International roaming with your provider – unless you are coming from the EU (where your standard rates apply) this will probably send you broke
  • Purchase a prepaid or rechargeable  international SIM before you depart – OneSimCard offers 4G coverage across the UK at reasonable rates. You can use the same SIM card if your trip includes countries in mainland Europe too – click here for more info
  • Use your hotel or AirBnB wifi plus public or restaurant wifi- free and easy, but you won’t be able to cross live to your followers on Insta from Buckingham Palace! Also, prepare for slower speeds..
  • Our favorite method  – take a wifi hotspot with you so you are connected wherever you go. We use the Skyroam Solis – it can be used by up to 5 devices so it is perfect for couples, families and friends traveling together. You can also charge those devices with it – now that’s smart! For more information on the Skyroam Solis click here . If you’re interested in this option you can use our coupon  UNTOLDM  for 10% off
  • Purchase a local SIM – simply head to a corner store or newsagency in London and you can easily buy a SIM. Don’t expect a lot of support though and speeds are woeful. You could also buy one from the local carriers – our favorites are “3” or “EE”

More apps for your London trip

Street Art London [iOS only, free to download] – view and visit street art by artist and location BBC Weather [iOS, Android and Amazon, free to download] – will you need a cardigan or coat? TodayTix  [iOS and Android, free to download] – last minute theatre tickets

How to Get Around London: The London Public Transport Zones

London is conveniently…or maybe just confusingly…divided into 9 different zones that determine your fare on most public transport. The zones are circular with 1 in the center and 9 being the outer circle. Zones 1 and 2 are contained in central London. In the London transportation system, the fare generally gets more expensive the more zones you cross.

How Much Does it Cost to Use London Public Transport?

Getting around London is fairly affordable, especially if you’re traveling with kids , since ages 10 and under ride anything that uses an Oyster Card for free, including the Underground and the Bus. Fares for riding each mode of transportation differ. The London buses cost around £1.5 per ride. A single tube fixed price is £2.40 with an Oyster card, but the card has a daily cap and even weekly cap which you can see in the chart below, which means that if you’re riding London public transport all day long you are saving a ton of money.

Different Types of London Public Transport

  • Underground
  • National Rail
  • Heathrow Express

I know that list seems long and scary, but don’t be worried, it’s great to have options and you don’t need to use all of these! I’m going to break down each option so you’ll know the ones that will work best for you.

1. The London Underground

The most well known, and most used London public transport is the London Underground, also known as “the Tube.” It is the oldest underground transportation network in the world, first opening in 1863, and carries over one billion passengers a year. The system is vast, with over 250 miles of track and over 200 stations.

The London Underground is the best way to get around London if you want to move quickly across a large area. And thanks to its efficiency, trains are usually on time.  You can easily find “Tube Stations” all around the city that will allow easy access to its 11 different colored lines. The stations are easily recognizable with the big red circle with “UNDERGROUND” written across it.

Trains generally run at least every 10 minutes between 5 am and midnight, some lines offering 24-hour lines. You can plan your journey on the London Underground here or you can use Google Maps on your phone. To ride the London Underground, you’ll need a ticket or an Oyster Card. Oyster cards are plastic credit card like passes that you can “top up” (add money to) at any time.

They work on the underground, bus systems, and some National Rail.  Children 10 and under ride the bus and tube for FREE ! To buy your Oyster card, find a machine in any Tube station or ask an attendant. To ride the Tube, hold your Oyster Card over the indicated area on the barriers on your way in and out. The barriers will automatically deduct your fare from your card.

2. Black Cabs

Of course, you can’t leave London without getting a ride from a London Cabby. The cabbies are required to take a difficult test to get this job. It can take years to study and pass the test and they must know the streets of London like the back of their hand! If you want to know about something you pass, ask the cabby, he most likely knows a bit about everything! London cabs seat 5 in the back.

They can get quite expensive so we try to save them for a rainy day (literally). Some cabs take credit cards, but about 80% of the ones we took were cash only. Fares are metered and paid upon completion of the journey. As a common courtesy, it’s always a good idea to go to the passenger window of the cab before getting in and telling them where you’re going to be sure they are willing to go there, especially if it’s far.

When the Taxi sign is lit, the cab is empty. To hail a cab, stand on the curb and hold your hand up. Also, look for designated Taxi pick up spots and be sure not to stand on a “zebra crossing” because they are not allowed to stop there.

My personal favorite way of getting around London is in the iconic red double-decker buses. With over 2 billion journeys a year taken by bus in London, this is the most popular mode of transportation in the city, and for good reason. Here are a few reasons why I think the bus is the best way to get around London:

  • Cheap: There is a set fare per journey, so even if you’re going from one end of the city to the other, your fare is still only 1.50 pounds! Also, kids 10 and under ride free!
  • Convenient: There are literally bus stops on almost every corner of London and the buses run continuously throughout the day and night, even stopping where there may not be an Underground station.
  • Accessibility: If you’re getting around London in a wheelchair or with kids in strollers, the bus is the most easily accessible mode of transportation, lacking the necessity of stairs. If you have a stroller you can just wheel it right on to the bus.
  • Oyster Card: You can pay for the bus using your Oyster Card by simply touching it to the yellow reader. You only need to use it at the beginning of your journey.
  • The View: Riding the bus in London provides you with incredible views of the city and allows you to see more of London while in transit than you otherwise would by being underground on the Tube. Yes, it’s slower than the Underground due to being restricted by traffic, but I think the trade-off is worth it.

4. River Bus

Guess what else you can use your Oyster Card on? That’s right, you guessed it: the riverboats of London known as the Thames Clippers River Bus. I feel like this is one of the most underutilized modes of transportation in London. Maybe because it’s a little pricer or because the boats don’t run as frequently as the buses or the Tube, but the riverboats can be a convenient way to get across the city while seeing it from a truly unique perspective.

5. Overground

The London Overground is pretty much the Underground, but, you guessed it, above ground (even though much of the Underground is also above ground). The overground is fairly new and basically covers areas that the Underground does not. You can use your Oyster Card on the Overground and the fare system with zones is the same as the Underground.

6. DLR (Docklands Light Rail)

This fully automated rail system (without any drivers) services mostly the East and South of Central London near the docklands area of London. It works just like the Underground and Overground and you can use your Oyster Card.

7. National Rail

What?! More trains? Yes! Most national rail services consist of several different lines that connect London to the rest of the country. Many commuters use these rail lines to commute from the suburbs surrounding London. Your Oyster Card will not work on National Rail lines and children 10 and under are not free, but usually ride at a discounted rate. There will be machines at the station where you can purchase rail tickets and usually a ticket office where you can talk to a human.

8. TramLink

This small tram system services South London, so if you’re staying there you’ll need to know about this one. The TramLink has a fixed fare and works like the bus so you only need your Oyster Card on the way in, not the way out.

9. Heathrow Express

If you’re coming to London you’re most likely flying into Heathrow Airport, London’s largest international airport. If so, taking the Heathrow Express is the fastest way to get into the city center. Don’t make the newbie mistake of taking a cab all the way into London! Book your tickets ahead of time online here to get the best deal. Fares range from £5-£32 depending on when you book.

10. Ride Share

  • UBER : UBER is regularly used and accepted in London. It’s an easy way to book and pay for transportation and you can now split fares with your travel buddies. It’s not quite the same experience as riding in a Black Cab in my opinion, but just as efficient. When we were there we found the price to be about the same, but you don’t have to worry about having cash on you for UBER at least. If you’ve never used UBER, don’t worry it’s fun, safe, and easy. Here’s a coupon for $5 off your first ride.
  • Free Now : Despite its name, Free Now is not free, but it will save you a few pence! What I like about Free Now is that you can call a regular car or a black cab, which is much easier than trying to hail one down on the street! I’ve also found it to be a bit cheaper than UBER. Download Free Now for Apple . Download Free Now for Google .

Biking around London can be a really fun and inexpensive way to see the city and get you from place to place on a nice day. The bikes with “Santander” written on them are affectionately known as “Boris Bikes” after Boris Johnson who was the Mayor of London when the bike program launched.

The bikes only cost £2 to access the bikes and the first 30 minutes are free. You could technically bike somewhere for 30 minutes, check in your bike, then check out a new bike and ride it for 30 minutes and so on, potentially paying only £2/day for your bike. There are  750 docking stations and 11,500 bikes to rent around London. You can use a credit card or the app to pay for your bike.

London has also recently put in millions of pounds to creating more bike lanes around the city to help the environment and the flow of traffic. They’ve done a nice job and you’ll see dedicated lanes for bikes all around the city, and especially in the most congested areas.

If you want to know how to get around London on a bike, you can learn more about the London Bike Scheme here .

12. Walking

Walking is a great way to see a lot of London. Most things in central London can be seen by walking and it’s a great way to make more room for all those delicious foods you’ll be eating! Plus, if you’re on a budget it’s the best way to get around London. Be sure to check the distance between you and your destination on Google Maps. You’ll be able to see a different view of London by walking the city. London is full of beautiful parks and they can make great short-cuts and lovely walks.

What is the Best Way to Get Around London?

While there’s no right or wrong answer to this questions, I definitely have my favorite ways of getting around London. As I’ve stated above, the bus is my personal favorite way to travel in London, but the Underground may be the fastest. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the chance to use every mode of transportation during your time there.

Do You Need an Oyster Card to Travel in London?

Having an Oyster Card in London is not strictly required, but I would highly recommend getting one. A London Oyster Card is the cheapest way to get around London, it covers journeys across London’s public transport networks including the Tube lines, buses, overground train station, and DLR, and can be used any time of the day throughout the week.

It makes life easier and will be more affordable. There is actually a price cap currently of £9.80 for zones 1-4. So you know that you won’t be paying more than that each day you are in London, regardless of how many times you ride.   This article from London Toolkit about the London Public Transport fares was really helpful.

Go Contactless

Use your contactless card, phone, or watch to pay for the tube map. Now riding the tube and bus is even easier with contactless payment. Just use your card, phone, or watch as you would when making a purchase. Be sure to “swipe” in and out using the same contactless card so you’ll be charged the correct fare.

Tips for Getting Around London

  • Buy an Oyster Card or Prepare Contactless Payment in Advance:  Having an Oyster Card is a great option as it will allow you to ride multiple forms of transportation around London without having to purchase single-ride tickets.
  • Download Google Maps App  and use it! Even if you have to look up directions before you leave wifi. I recommend using google maps public transit directions. These have almost never failed me! The app gives you train or bus times and even track numbers, alternate train times, bus stop letters, and exit names. Google Maps will also provide you with several options for public transportation around London. You can see below that to get from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey using public transportation you have the option to take the Underground or the River Boat.Along with detailed public transport maps and directions, Google Maps will also provide detailed walking directions from the transit stop to the destination.
  • Mind the Gap: Those signs everywhere that say “Mind the Gap”…they’re no joke! During my last trip to London, my nephew got stuck in the gap. It was pretty scary, so just be careful.
  • Stand on the Right: When riding on the escalators, stand on the right or walk on the left.
  • Travel During Off Peak : Try to avoid using public transportation between 7-9 am and 5-7 pm when trains and buses are crowded.
  • Try New Things: Don’t be afraid to try different types of transportation like riverboats.
