What Can the Platinum Card Concierge Do for You?

The Platinum Card Concierge is there for you to help you with whatever you may need:

• Request travel guides for any location
• Send a last-minute gift or flowers to someone special
• Get help planning an event

While there is no cost to you for the Platinum Card Concierge services, you are responsible for any purchases, fees, and/or shipping charges you authorize to be charged .

After making a request, you will get all the requested information emailed to you, usually within 48 hours.

Remember that the concierge may not be able to help you with all requests — a restaurant may indeed be fully booked up or a concert at capacity. While you can certainly hope the concierge will help with your request (and many times they do), there are occasions where your request simply can’t be honored.

It can get a little confusing when you are following the prompts on the phone. However, they can easily transfer you to the correct department if you end up in the wrong place.

You should note that if you have any requests dealing with travel, you should ask to speak with the travel department right away — the concierge team will defer travel requests, even those that are minor, to the folks who specifically handle travel.

In the U.S., call 800-525-3355. From there, an automated voice prompt will ask you what you need — and you can say anything like “flowers,” “dining,” “travel,” “reservations,” and more. The system will direct your call to the agent handling those types of requests.

Hot Tip: The ability to email Platinum Card Concierge ended on August 18, 2021. All requests must now be submitted over the phone.

If you have any version of the Amex Platinum Card (including the Amex Platinum small business card), you have access to more perks than you might realize – including Amex Concierge service .

They’re happy to help you locate information and handle detailed requests. You can reach them at  800-525-3355 , or via email and text after you opt-in through your online account.

There’s no charge to ask for information. But if you want them to make a purchase or arrange a reservation for you, you must authorize them to place any charges on your card. Before they add a charge to your account, they’ll call for authorization. So you won’t get hit with a bigger amount than you expected.

Here’s how to save time with a concierge.

1. Secure Reservations at Coveted Restaurants

If you want a restaurant reservation, your first thought might be to call the restaurant directly. That works fine for most places. But if you want to dine at a popular restaurant where reservations are scarce, pass it on to American Express Platinum concierge.

Many upscale restaurants release reservations in chunks, or for specific times. And Amex also has direct lines and preferred access for cardmembers at others.

If you don’t want to set an alert to search for a reservation, or spend time sorting through options, your concierge can handle it for you and email you with a confirmation.

When I went to New Orleans, I wanted to dine at a different restaurant every day – and had 4 places in mind. Instead of calling every restaurant, I gave the list to American Express Platinum concierge and let them set reservations for me each night at the same time.

I didn’t have to go over available times or arrange the days. Instead, I got a confirmation email with everything arranged after making one phone call.

2. Get Concert or Event Tickets That Seem Sold out

No guarantees here, but I’ve had luck letting American Express Platinum concierge search for the best tickets. And if there’s a show you want to see, you can ask your concierge to buy a ticket the moment they go on sale.

Amex sometimes reserves their own block of tickets at certain events, available exclusively to cardholders. Even better, when you buy these tickets, there are no extra “service fees,” which I hate paying!

If you know a concert, play, or other event is wildly popular, it’s worth calling to ask if you can get a better seat, lower rate, or just let Amex remember to buy you a seat.

When I saw Hamilton in Chicago, I paid way less than if I’d booked directly and got seats with great views for myself and two friends. There’s no doubt I would’ve never had this experience if I hadn’t picked up the phone and called Amex Concierge.

If a show seems sold out, or if you know you won’t be available to search as soon as a show starts selling tickets, it’s worth calling to see if you have options. You might be surprised!

3. Send a Gift When You Don’t Have Time

If you looked at your calendar and realized a birthday, anniversary, or special event is sooner than expected, American Express Platinum concierge excels at making you look smooth when you don’t have time to check who can deliver flowers or a gift to a special someone.

And when you have a request, like for a particular bouquet or items for a certain store, the concierge can sort delivery details. They can even do same-day requests if you’re caught off guard and swamped with other things. As long as you can make a call or shoot a quick email, you won’t have to miss sending well wishes on a special day.

4. Provide Help Planning an Event

If you’ve ever planned an event, even a small one, you know how much goes into it. You have to check if there’s a deposit, spending minimum, whether the venue is appropriate for your number of guests, and – of course – if the space is even available. What might start as a few phone calls turns into an afternoon before you know it.

But remember, you’ve got help on your side. I wouldn’t recommend asking Amex Concierge to plan a huge event, like a wedding or reunion. Because Amex says:

Our Concierge staff typically fulfills requests at no cost to you;  however, in the case of meetings and event planning, fees may apply

But if you need basic information about what’s available, cost, and specifics, ask them to collate the information for you.

You can also request other information, like which set menus are available, if a venue allows separate payments, or how much an open bar costs. When you get the list in your inbox, you can follow-up with other questions until you find the right space.

5. Find Specialized Services

Do you need an electrician who can also sand down a door and replace a piece of chipped trim? Or a cobbler that works with soft leather shoes?

Some brands only let authorized retailers service their products for repair. Or you might be planning a big purchase and want to know return and warranty policies before you drive to every store around town.

This would be a great reason to ask Amex concierge to research on your behalf. They can also find out hours of operation, whether a specialist is available, and set an appointment if one is required. That way, you can save time calling around and know right where to go when you’re ready.

6. Research Venue Choices

If you’re looking for a venue with certain specifications, ask Amex Concierge to make a list for you. This doesn’t have to be an event, but any occasion.

Maybe you’re looking for an outdoor patio with a happy hour downtown, or Ethiopian restaurants with vegan options.

If you want a coworking space with unlimited printer use and a conference room, they can find out where it is and how much it costs to rent.

Sure, you can always search around yourself. But if you want a starting point, or a list of choices without any hassle, make a quick call and get it done faster.

7. Your Specific Request (No Matter How Weird or Wacky!)

Folks have put Amex concierge through the wringer with questions you wouldn’t believe. They’ve asked for which zoos have multiple giraffes, what companies fly to outer space, and where to buy a vintage bottle of wine from a specific year and from a particular vineyard.

You might have other questions, like who can repair your sewing machine, where to get a ring resized, which optometrist sells a brand of eyewear, or pretty much anything else that pops up. Or, if someone asks you for a recommendation, you can put concierge on the hunt.

As long as your request isn’t lewd or illegal, your concierge will be happy to assist. But don’t set the bar too high – even a concierge can’t perform miracles.

They’ll let you know if something is impossible. But for reasonable requests,  it’s definitely worth asking for a helping hand. That’s what it’s there for!

If you have an Amex Platinum Card, like The Platinum Card® from American Express, you’ve got a powerful assistant in your corner who can help you with:

What is the American Express Travel portal?

Amex Travel is the booking portal for most American Express cards . You can book flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises through the site, and you can pay with points, cash or a combination of the two.

How to book flights on the Amex Travel portal

To find flights on American Express Travel, visit this webpage . The flight booking process on the Amex Travel portal is similar to other popular sites like Kayak and Orbitz. You'll find a search box where you can enter your departure and destination cities.

If you're flexible with your departure airport, you can choose an entire city, such as New York, which has multiple airports. Additionally, you can customize your booking by selecting your preferred class and the number of travelers, and choosing between one-way and round-trip flights.

You'll see the price listed in dollars and the number of Amex Membership Rewards points during the booking process.

You can also use the options on the left-hand side to filter flights by number of stops, departure and arrival times, flight duration and airline.

Delta Air Lines is a featured airline in the Amex Travel portal. Sometimes, Delta flights appear at the top of your results, listed as "recommended," but this doesn't mean those flights are always the cheapest.

Additionally, if you have The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and are flying from an airport with a Centurion Lounge , you'll see an indicator that a lounge is available.

Points vs. cash

When paying for your flights on Amex Travel, several American Express cards offer elevated earning rates:

You can also pay with Amex Membership Rewards points to cover the cost of your flight.

You'll see the number of points required next to the cash price of a flight. You can expect a value of 1 cent per point when using Pay with Points . However, TPG values Membership Rewards points at 2 cents apiece when you maximize Amex's transfer partners.

It's important to compare the number of points required for bookings on Amex Travel with the points you'd need to transfer to an airline program . If you can't book a flight through transfer partners and prefer to use your points, Amex Travel remains an option.

There's an additional benefit for Amex Business Platinum cardmembers: You can get 35% of your points back when paying with points on Amex Travel. This applies to first- and business-class flights on any airline plus tickets in any class on your preferred airline (the same one used for your airline incidental credits ; enrollment is required in advance). This 35% points rebate can provide a value of 1.54 cents per point, which may influence your decision to pay with cash or points.

Similarly, the Business Centurion® Card from American Express offers a 50% Pay with Points rebate on eligible flights. Note that Centurion cards are available by invitation only.

More details about flights through Amex Travel

During the payment process, you can use points, your credit card or a combination of both. The minimum number of points you can use is 5,000, and each point is valued at 1 cent.

You can upgrade your flights using cash or points in the Amex Travel portal. This generally gives you a return of 1 cent each, and you can book using your Amex card, points or a combination of both.

During your flight search, you might come across "Insider Fares" that offer a discounted price. But to benefit from the discount, you must redeem points to cover the full fare amount.

Amex Platinum and Amex Business Platinum cardmembers have another benefit: discounted premium tickets through Amex Travel's International Airline Program . This program offers discounts on first-class, business-class and premium economy tickets from over 20 participating airlines.

To book a premium ticket using the IAP, go to the Amex Travel portal and pay with cash or points, including the Business Platinum card's 35% airline rebate. Keep in mind that not all flights are eligible and there are restrictions:

• The cardmember must travel on the itinerary.
• A maximum of eight tickets can be booked per itinerary; travel must begin and end in the U.S. or Canadian international airports.
• Tickets are nonrefundable unless stated otherwise.
• Name changes for passengers are not allowed.

Finally, note that flights booked through Amex Travel are typically treated as normal paid tickets, meaning you're eligible to earn points or miles with participating airline loyalty programs.

How to book hotels on the Amex Travel portal

You can book hotels through American Express Travel with a Gold, Platinum or Centurion card. As with other travel portals, you can input your destination, dates, number of rooms and number of guests (with separate input fields for adults and children).

Platinum and Business Platinum cardmembers earn 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotel reservations.

After selecting your hotel, you'll choose your preferred room and pay with points or cash. If you pay with points, you'll only get a value of 0.7 cents per point (compared to 1 cent when you book flights).

Note that these are considered third-party bookings, so you likely won't earn hotel points or elite credits for your stay . While there are reports of people receiving stay credits with Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors on rooms booked through Amex Travel, the hotel is not guaranteed to recognize your elite status in these programs or provide status-qualifying stay credits.

Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts

Platinum and Centurion cardholders also have access to the Fine Hotels + Resorts program through Amex Travel. This can add some great benefits to your hotel stays — and may not cost much more than booking directly with the hotel.

Here are the perks you'll receive with every FHR booking, regardless of the length of your stay:

• Room upgrade upon arrival (when available): Some room types may be excluded, but you could receive an upgrade to preferred rooms with better views or a better location in the hotel.
• Daily breakfast for two people: The provided breakfast must be, at a minimum, a continental breakfast.
• Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
• Noon check-in when available
• Complimentary Wi-Fi
• Unique property amenity: The amenity varies by hotel but should be valued at $100 or more and usually consists of a property credit, dining credit, spa credit, private airport transfer or similar amenity.

You'll need to book these stays through Amex Travel, but note that FHR is considered a separate program from Amex Travel.

In addition, if you have the personal Amex Platinum , you can also get up to $200 in statement credits every year for prepaid reservations through Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection — which we'll discuss next. Enrollment is required.

The Hotel Collection

A lesser-known American Express benefit is The Hotel Collection , which allows you to book in cash or with points. Those with Amex Gold, Platinum and Centurion cards have access to this program, which offers the following benefits:

• A room upgrade at check-in (if available)
• $100 on-property credit for qualifying dining, spa and resort activities

Note that The Hotel Collection bookings require a minimum stay of two nights, though they too are eligible for the $200 hotel credit on the Amex Platinum.

How to book rental cars and cruises on the Amex Travel portal

Reserving a car in the Amex portal is relatively simple. You'll input your pickup and drop-off times and location.

You'll see rental car prices listed in cash and points. When using Pay with Points , your points are worth 0.7 cents — just over a third of TPG's valuation of Amex Membership Rewards points.

Although the format differs, you can also search for cruises on Amex Travel.

Rather than typing specific dates and numbers of passengers, you'll see four drop-down menus. These allow you to choose a destination (by region), filter by cruise lines and choose a month for travel — though not specific dates — on this first page. You can also select your desired cruise duration.

From here, you can filter by cruise duration, departure port and ship. You can sort your results by sailing date, value, price or ship rating.

On the final payment page, you can use your card or redeem points, ranging from 1 point to enough to cover the entire cost. Using points for a cruise will result in a low valuation of 0.7 cents per point, but it can be a money-saving option if you prefer not to spend cash.

There's another benefit available if you're a Platinum or Centurion cardholder (including personal and business versions of these cards): the Cruise Privileges Program .

This is available on cruises of five nights or more with select cruise lines, and it offers the following perks:

• $100-$500 in onboard ship credit (note that this cannot be used for casino or gratuity charges)
• Additional onboard amenities vary by line, such as spa vouchers, a bottle of Champagne, shore excursion credits or a private ship tour

Note that the Platinum cardmember must be one of the travelers on the cruise to enjoy these benefits.

Further things to consider about Amex Travel

When booking through the Amex Travel portal, there are a few factors to consider.

First, using Amex Membership Rewards points on Amex Travel may not provide the best value compared to transferring points to airline or hotel loyalty programs. The Pay with Points feature typically values points at 0.7 to 1 cent per point, which is far lower than our 2-cent valuation .

Additionally, the prices on Amex Travel may not always be the most competitive, so we recommend checking other platforms like Google Flights before booking your travel. Also, booking directly with hotels is advised for those seeking to utilize elite status benefits.

When you need to change your upcoming trips booked through Amex Travel, it can get complicated. You may encounter change and cancellation fees, often around $75, and making a change requires a phone call. Flight credit vouchers from cancellations can only be used for rebooking through Amex Travel via phone.

On the positive side, Amex Travel allows a 24-hour cancellation window for most reservations, and booking flights through the site generally still qualifies for earning miles and status with airline loyalty programs.

Bottom line

American Express Travel offers an array of booking options, including the ability to earn bonus Membership Rewards points on select purchases. Although you can use your points to book hotels, flights, rental cars and cruises through Amex Travel, you can get more from your points when you transfer them to Amex's airline and hotel partners .

However, there are exceptions, such as when there is no award availability for last-minute travel. In addition, Amex Travel offers perks like discounted premium flights, added benefits with Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts and a user-friendly interface. American Express offers a lifestyle concierge service to provide personalized assistance to cardholders. You can request the concierge act as an agent to make purchases or book services on your behalf. Services include sourcing pet care, event tickets for entertainment like concerts or sports games, hotel or restaurant reservations and more.

American Express boasts exclusive privileges and access to VIP shows, luxury hotels and even sold-out events. Access is not guaranteed, but the concierge service can certainly help you try.

The concierge can even help cardholders in emergencies—like with lost baggage or missed flights during travel or medical emergencies.

How Does the Amex Platinum Concierge Work?

The American Express Concierge service is for premium card members only. This includes anyone who holds the Platinum card, the Business Platinum Card, any reserve card, such as The American Express ® Aeroplan ®  Reserve Card, and any corporate card. The service is complimentary, meaning cardholders can make any request at no extra cost—even if nothing is purchased.

Cardholders can ask a concierge for assistance in purchasing tickets to special events, gift deliveries and other shopping requests. An American Express concierge can contact a third-party seller and buy something on your behalf.

You will be responsible for the cost of any purchases, including shipping, taxes or fees. Everything will be charged to your card. Once the request has been submitted, your concierge will contact you with purchase details—most likely via email or phone.

As a premium American Express cardholder, you can use your complimentary concierge service to buy concert tickets, book a hotel or restaurant, book a day at the spa or a golf course and even send flower deliveries. Whatever the concierge books for you will be charged to your eligible American Express card.

All you have to do is make a request and wait for final details by email or phone. Calling the concierge does not guarantee access to a sold-out event or fully booked hotel. There may be times when the concierge won’t be able to help you.

Contacting the concierge is easy—all you have to do is call the number on the back of your Platinum card and ask for “concierge.” Once on the line, you can ask a concierge about making a purchase or booking a service.

The Platinum Card (along with other eligible premium Amex cards) is one of the most desired cards, and with good reason: Services including the Platinum Concierge boast a stellar reputation.

You can make any reasonable request of an Amex concierge and they’ll give it a shot. Need someone to buy concert tickets for you the minute they go on sale? You can ask your concierge to do so. Are you trying to get into the hottest new restaurant in London? Ask your concierge to make a reservation for you.

American Express has other perks your concierge can tap into to get you the best experience. For example, Global Dining Access in partnership with Resy enables cardholders to get early access to high-profile restaurants and exclusive reservations. You can make specific requests for a particular restaurant or make a general request for something like an upscale Italian restaurant with a view of the Hudson River in New York City. They’ll do their best to figure it out.

In addition to booking vacations or business trips using Amex Travel, you can call a concierge when something goes wrong, like a canceled flight or lost baggage.

Remember to be polite when making a request—a concierge performs customer service and no one wants to help a rude customer. You might be surprised at what your Platinum Concierge from American Express can accomplish.

Any premium American Express cardholder may access the Platinum Concierge service, not just Platinum cardholders. A personal booking assistant can be extremely useful for last-minute needs. You may have even used one yourself while on vacation to get a map of the city, ask for restaurant recommendations, or secure tickets to a theater show. While most people have seen them and know that they exist, they don’t know that their credit card offers a similar service.

Credit card concierges have been around for decades and can provide a wealth of information and a wide breadth of services that you might not have ever known existed.

What is a credit card concierge?

Think of a credit card concierge as someone who you can call on whenever you need a helping hand or just someone to help take some of the weight off of your plate. If you’re swamped with things in your normal day-to-day life, having someone there that you can reach with a simple phone call can make all the difference in the world.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Chase doesn’t have their own concierge team, rather you set up an account with Visa Infinite. Through the Visa infinite concierge, you’ll be responsible for whatever charges you put through the concierge. When you create an account over the phone, you’ll provide your Chase Sapphire Reserve® details to the Visa concierge and off you go.

With transferable points that transfer to airlines like United and Air Canada and hotel chains like Hyatt, the points you earn while you’re going about your day to day are incredibly flexible. You can also redeem them for 50% extra value through the Chase Travel Portal.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Much like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Capital One manages their concierge program via the Visa Infinite program. The main differentiator with the Capital One card and the Chase card is in their points earning ability.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card card offers a simple 2x miles on everyday purchases no matter the category. You'll receive 5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel and 10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. Bilt Rewards Mastercard

Amazingly, this no annual fee credit card doesn’t skimp on benefits. The World Elite Mastercard comes with access to the Mastercard concierge, powered by Aspire Lifestyles. They’ll be able to do many of the same things that your Visa and American Express concierge can accomplish.

The Bilt card offers a unique points earning structure, where you’ll earn 3X on dining, 2X, and 1X. This doubles on the first day of the month, what they refer to as Rent Day . 

Points earned can transfer to airline partners United and American and also to hotel partner Hyatt so you can earn some free travel while seeing what your concierge can do for you.

Citi Premier® Card

Citi’s concierge claims to give you access to a staff of experts working around the clock in order to fulfill your every need. They can help you find stores or restaurants that offer delivery of your favorite products or even provide ideas for activities for a night at home with the kids. Whatever you can imagine you’ll need, the Citi Concierge will be able to help.

The Citi Premier® Card is one of Citi’s flexible rewards cards, earning valuable ThankYou points for all purchases. You’ll get a generous 3x points on restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, air travel, and hotels, for a limited time earn 10 ThankYou® Points per $1 spent on hotel, car rentals, and attractions (excluding air travel) booked on the Citi Travel℠ portal through June 30, 2024.

The card itself doesn’t come with any travel protections or insurances, so make sure to keep that in mind if it's important to you.

Unique things your credit card concierge can do

If things like flowers and booking hotels are a little too mundane for your tastes, how about thinking outside the box. Afterall, you’ve signed up for these credit cards, so you might as well take advantage of all the perks that come with them, right?

Remember that while there are a lot of things that you can ask your concierge to do for you, there are some things that they cannot do. They won’t be able to make full flights magically become un-sold or hotels become available. They also won’t be able to have tickets for a concert appear out of thin air, nor will they be able to do anything to violate local or federal laws.

Also keep in mind that while the service of the concierge is typically free, the products, events, services or items that they help with will be charged to your credit card.

Help plan a road trip

If you’ve ever wondered what in the world is between point A and point B, or felt fear of loss because you might miss something along the way, consider asking your concierge for an assist. By telling them what kind of events or experience you want to see, they can curate a map for you, making sure to direct you to all of the hole-in-the-wall locations and unique roadside attractions there might be.

Plan an international trip

Traveling overseas can be overwhelming and complicated, especially if you don’t speak the language or have even the slightest idea of what to do. Your concierge can help take that stress off of your plate. They’ll typically start out by asking what types of activities you enjoy and go from there. Are you a foodie who wants a unique cooking class? Perhaps you’re more the mellow art gallery type. If walking tours are important, they can help set you up with an English language guided walking tour of your favorite European capitals.

Ever left something behind in a hotel room? Left your headphones onboard the aircraft? Your credit card concierge can contact the right people for you and make sure they look high and low for your lost item and then return it to you.

Finding unique and off the wall services

Need to find a store selling Danish antiques? Looking for the best pet spa in your area? Your credit card concierge can comb through listings for you and find the best-rated businesses in your area.

Only you know how much of a unique request you’ll have. If you’re a collector of 1930’s sports memorabilia, but you don’t want to spend an entire day bouncing around to every antique store in town while on vacation, ask your credit card concierge to give some calls to local stores and see if you can knock any of them off of your list.

Find hard to get products

During the pandemic, some of the most hard to find items were toilet paper, clorox wipes, and even at-home haircutting machines. If you’ve got an item that seems to be perpetually out of stock and you’re pulling your hair out trying to find it, your concierge can help.

Some common requests include certain styles or colors of clothing, workout materials, specialty international foods and more. If you can’t easily find it online, then ask your concierge for help.

If they find it, they’ll send you an email with the information of where to get it, or they might even purchase it for you, charging it to your card on file and sending it to wherever you are.

Set up unique experiences

Credit card concierges field dozens of calls a day, so they’ve got a long list of experiences that they’ve done in the past for clients, perhaps things you wouldn;t even have thought of.

If you want to propose while doing a hot air balloon ride over the Pyramids of Giza, they can help make that happen. If you want to do a tour of your favorite winery in the south of France, that can be arranged. 

If you’ve always wanted to do a behind the scenes tour of your favorite English Premier League soccer stadium, why not call up the concierge and see if that’s something that can be set up. Don’t be afraid to have a little fun and ask for some enjoyable and unique ideas.

Airport escort services

If you’ve got a tight connection or you’re unfamiliar with a new airport, the credit card concierge can help to make sure someone is there waiting for you at the plane’s door when you land. These airport escorts can help you breeze through immigration, customs, security, and even baggage claim. 

Some countries even have special VIP lounges for their escorted guests, so while you’re waiting for your baggage to arrive off the belt, you can relax in the lounge and have a refreshing drink or light meal before heading off to your hotel. Just keep in mind that while the concierge can find you the speciality service, you’re still the one paying the bill. 

Bottom line

The easiest way that you’re going to find out what these concierges can do is to call and ask. Remember that just like with any employee you reach out to at a call center, your luck depends on who picks up the phone. 

If you’re looking for something simple like flowers sent to a loved one or the random off the wall last minute rental car to avoid an oncoming hurricane, the credit card concierge can be your best friend in a time of need.
