WHERE TO GO KAYAKING IN QUEENSTOWN

by Jub | Feb 2, 2023

Kayaking in Queenstown sounds fun to you?

Make sense as there’s the huge Lake Wakatipu right on the doorstep.

But where exactly should you go kayaking in Queenstown? There are a few options, and they’re not all on Lake Wakatipu. This post will give a beginner/family-friendly introduction to Queenstown kayaking.

p.s. If you want to borrow my inflatable 2 person kayak in Queenstown, message me via WhatsApp on +64 20 4170 2764 and we can try work something out.

QUEENSTOWN KAYAKING: WHAT TO KNOW

kayaking in queenstown at bobs cove

1. Where to kayak in Queenstown 2. Where to hire & buy kayaks in Queenstown 3. Kayak tours in & around Queenstown

Let’s get into it.

1. WHERE TO GO KAYAKING IN QUEENSTOWN

Clicking the image below will open the map in a new window.

where to go kayaking queenstown

QUEENSTOWN BAY

queenstown bay beaches

This is where Paddle Queenstown are based, so it makes sense to go kayaking here. And it is beautiful! But it’s busy, not just with people on the beach, but traffic on the water too. So while you’re allowed to kayak in the bay it can be a bit stressful (stay out of the access lanes).

The easiest place to kayak without getting in the way of boats and other motorised vehicles is to follow the shoreline around the Queenstown Gardens . The exception would be early in the morning before the motorised vehicles are running, and you can sort of have more free reign.

That said, if you’ve got the family keen to hang on the beach for the day, having your kayak there isn’t a bad idea.

moke lake secret viewpoint

If there’s lots of wind on Lake Wakatipu, then Moke Lake can be a great place to find flat water for kayaking.

And you’ve got the Moke Lake walk , as well as a couple of other activities you can do nearby.

There’s a nice launching area at the main car park at the far end of the lake, and the water temperature is quite warm if you’re feeling like a mid-swim dip.

The only downside to Moke Lake is the water is dark compared to other places you can kayak in the Queenstown area. Not a major, but something to keep in mind.

BOB’S COVE

bobs cove

Bob’s Cove is a must-stop location on the road between Queenstown and Glenorchy .

It’s got tropical island vibes with the water being so clear. Check out the photo above taken from a flight I took back from Milford Sound with the amazing Air Milford team , so good!

It’s a large bay, I liked heading around the edge of the bay and heading along the coastline toward Queenstown before circling back.

The only downside of kayaking here is the few hundred metres you need to walk along part of the Bob’s Cove Track to get to the beach from the car park…it’s no major but noticeable.

SUNSHINE BAY

sunshine bay beach queenstown

A short drive from the heart of Queenstown, Sunshine Bay takes you away from chaos. Love it. The beach is full of small smallish pebbles and can be sheltered at times even when Queenstown Bay is windy. As a kayaking destination, it can be fun to kayak into town early in the morning to grab a coffee before kayaking back to Sunshine Bay.

This is a great kayaking spot that’s away from the larger crowds, but easy to access.

RELATED POST: THE SUNSHINE BAY TRACK

wilson bay one of the best beaches in queenstown

Wilson Bay is a spot that’s getting more and more popular. It’s located next to the Seven Mile bike area, but the bay is gorgeous and the fact you can park right next to the beach makes it super easy to access. And while it can be busy, you wouldn’t call it overcrowded.

For kayaking, this makes it super easy to get in and out of the water to/from the car, and there’s ample space to relax on the beach.

SHOTOVER RIVER

edith cavell bridge arthurs point

The Shotover River is illegal to kayak in (unless you apply for a permit), but there is an exception thanks to a public concession that was passed in 2021. That concession allows the public to access the Shotover River from 5.30 pm and 10 pm every Wednesday and Friday.

You get into the Shotover River up at Arthurs Point , then you can kayak down the river and exit at Tucker Beach. Given the timeline of 5.30 pm to 10 pm, this is only something to do in the summer months.

In general, the river is cruisey to navigate but there can be some awkward sections so it’s usually better to go with a group.

Drift Bay is located out in Jacks Point, which is a growing area with lots of new builds and airbnb rentals popping up. So you might find yourself out in this direction.

You can drive close tot he launch point, and it’s almost a guarantee you’ll only be sharing the area with a handful of people at once. The bay is often sheltered on a windy day, but there are certainly no guarantees. Given that, I’d only head here to kayak if you’re sure its a calm day and/or are staying nearby.

lake hayes loop walk

Lake Hayes is a decent-sized lake that people enjoy cycling, walking and running around. But you can also go out on the lake itself. I’m not sure why, but this doesn’t seem to be a super popular place for kayaking.

If you’re walking the Lake Hayes loop you’ll spot a few kayaks hidden in the bushes, but I rarely see kayaks on the lake itself.

Perhaps the scenery isn’t as good as Moke Lake? And it does seem to get a steady wind on it more often than not. That said, one of the local kayak clubs trains on here, so if you’re staying nearby, it’s not a bad option.

The easiest access is at the northern end of the lake, where on warm days you can swim in the warm-ish water.

PIGEON ISLAND

paddling on lake whakatipu

If you’re looking for a kayaking mission, then an overnight or day trip to Pigeon Island might be just what you’re looking for. The kayak adventure is about 2km each way and once you’re there you can enjoy the walk around the island or even stay at the hut (or camp). For those who are ambitious, you can kayak around the island as well.

2. WHERE TO GET KAYAKS IN QUEENSTOWN

secret beach queenstown

If you’re looking to get your hands on kayaks in Queenstown, there’s only one place that you can hire them from really. Otherwise you can look into buying one (remember to buy life jackets/PFD’s).

WHERE TO HIRE KAYAKS IN QUEENSTOWN

There’s only one reasonable place to hire kayaks in Queenstown, and that’s with Paddle Queenstown .

It’s best to book in advance with them, as they’re not always available on Queenstown Beach. You can book online, or at least give them a call in advance.

  • Single kayak for 1 person (all ages) is $35
  • Double kayak for 2 adults (max weight 200kg)s is $70
  • Double kayak for 1 adult + 1 child (max weight 200kgs) is $60
  • Single kayak for 1 child (Ages 5-8 / max weight 40kgs) is $20

WHERE TO BUY KAYAKS IN QUEENSTOWN

There aren’t too many places to buy kayaks in Queenstown. And over the summer any stock the shops do have can sell out fast. I recommend buying online in advance using the click and collect option so you can pick it up in-store when it arrives, and/or call the store up in advance and ask to put it on hold for you which they usually can for a couple of days.

I’ve got the Intex Challenger K2 from Macpac and have had great times on it.

Here are a few places to look at buying kayaks in Queenstown:

  • The Warehouse
  • Facebook Marketplace

Don’t forget you’ll need to buy life jackets as well. In addition to the above, Rebel Sports may have some.

3. KAYAKING TOURS IN QUEENSTOWN

funyaks dart river adventures

In Queenstown itself, there aren’t a whole lot of kayaking tours available. But in and around the Otago region, there are a few options. Here’s what you’ve got option-wise:

GUIDED TOURS

  • Rosscos Milford Kayaks : This is a fun and different way to experience Milford Sound. They’ve got a great reputation, and they have a few options available such as this trip that combines kayaking an a cruise.
  • Funyaks with Dart River Adventures : Based out in Glenorchy the funyaks are inflatable canoes. Not exactly kayaks, but the same principles. They’ve got a great team of guides, and this is a full day excursion that’ll be one to remember for sure. You can also book it on GetYourGuide.com

SELF-GUIDED TOURS

  • Moke Lake with Paddle Queenstown: If you’d rather not go in Queenstown Bay, they can take you to Moke Lake and provide everything you need before you head out on your own self paced kayak around the lake. Find out more here .
  • To Ruby Island with Paddle Wanaka: Ruby Island is a short distance off the shores of Lake Wanaka, and you can hire a kayak to head out this way. You can get good discounts with them here on BookMe.co.nz .

And there we go, an introduction for Queenstown kayaking for beginners/family-friendly stuff.

About the Dart River

The Dart River Wilderness Jet, with the impressive background of Mt Aspiring National Park

Our team spend years training to become Dart River guides. Their expertise on the jet boats, as tour guides, and in the local area make Dart River Adventures so special. With many years under our belts, we know the Glenorchy region like the backs of our hands.

Every adventure is different. The glacier-fed river means that water levels and access changes frequently. We get to share different parts of this unique landscape every day. Ngāi Tahu—the local Iwi—is proud to share this impressive slice of Te Wāhipounamu with people from all over the world.

These incredible glacial landscapes are recognised as some of the best in the world. The only way to see them is with Dart River Adventures.

As a gold-tier Qualmark certified tourism service provider, Dart River Adventures is proud to uphold the three main components of Tourism New Zealand’s accreditation:

  • Light footprint: An environmentally friendly and holistically sustainable experience.
  • Safe and sound: Where safe principles and practices are part of every experience.
  • Warm welcome: Where you will always find a genuine welcome and true New Zealand hospitality.

At Dart River Adventures, we believe that taking a long-term view of sustainable operations can ensure our children’s children and the generations beyond will enjoy the whenua as we do today. So we have taken the Tiaki Promise to:

  • Care for land, sea, and nature. Treading lightly and leaving no trace.
  • Travel safely, showing care and consideration for all.
  • Respect culture, travelling with an open heart and mind.

We work alongside the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust, the Electric Jet Boat Project, and the Department of Conservation to make more sustainable and climate-conscious business choices where we can. The Tiaki Promise we have undertaken informs all our decision-making, and the Ngāi Tahu iwi guides us on people and future-focused vision for generations to come.

The team was exceptional, letting us all have fun on the funyaks but still ensuring we were safe. They did a great tour and the vistas on the Dart river were exceptional. I’ll be doing it again when I return. Awesome.

Good price for the trip on the river.

One of the highlights of our trip to the South Island. a 30km trip up the Dart River by Jet Boat and a 10km Funyak trip back down again. Stunning scenery and great fun. An absolute must-do if visiting the area. We self drove to Glenorchy so we arrived early and had breakfast at the cafe, and then got to explore a little afterwards rather than jumping on the bus with others from the trip.

The scenery were beautiful and the driver *** guide were informative. It is fun on the kayak and the green river was the highlight.

Latest Questions about Kayaking - Funyaks

Hi I'm looking to join this tour - however, I need to get to Queenstown Airport by 7pm in the evening on the day I do this. Can you please confirm the time and address that this day tour would end by?

Thanks for your questions about the brilliant Funyaks and jet boat tour in Glenorchy!  You have the option of taking the Dart River transport to and from Queenstown or you can drive yourself there and back. If you take their transport, you would arrive back in Queenstown between 5&6 pm. If you drive your selves, you would be able to leave Glenorchy as soon as you are ready and you won't need to wait for the rest of the group to be ready.

Hi we are a family of 9 adults - 2 parents and adults aged 25-33 Could we get a group price by chance?

Thank you so much for your enquiry. Yes, we can certainly offer you a group rate for Nomad Safari Quad biking. I will send you an email with more information.

Comment by: Everything Queenstown on 15th May 21 at 17:03

is it ok to book a family pass with 2 adults and two kids if the adults are the same sex and one of the kids is 15yrs

Yes, in order to be eligible to book the Funyaks family pass from Queenstown the kids need to be 15 years of age or under. Kids under 5 are not permitted to Funyak however.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 2nd May 16 at 20:32

Should we bring a change of trousers for the day as we probably may get wet on the fun yak tour? Can we leave a backpack dry in the bus?

When you do the Funyak tour in Queenstown, you will first get changed into our swimwear and you are then provided with a thick wetsuit, booties, spray jacket and life jacket. All your dry clothes are left in a secure locker for you to change in to once you return back to the Funyaks base after your trip is complete. You can also leave any bags and valuables at the Funyaks base. The Funyaks trip does book up in advance so if you can let me know what date you are thinking of booking then I can check the availability for you.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 14th Oct 15 at 00:44

can you accomodate 35 people on day?

Hi Rupin. The Funyaks can take up to 40 people in one group on each departure. There are up to 2 departures each day at 9am and 11am.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 19th Feb 15 at 15:48

There are 2 of us travelling together. All the promotional pictures show 2 people in the Funyaks but the words seem to indicate each person has there own. Can you please clarify as we would like to be in the 1 Funyak.

Hi Andy. Yes, if you are travelling as a 2 then you get to share a Funyak together. Everyone doing the Funyaks trip in Glenorchy will be paired up with another person so there are always two people in each Funyak.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 6th Mar 13 at 10:09

May i know how long the kayaking will be?..do you provide halal or vegetarian food for this trip?..is this trip consists of 4wd drive and speed boat?, for speed boat, how long the journey is?

Hi Radzi, the lunch is a buffet lunch to cater for all so you can pick and choose what you eat. Yes, the trip consists of a 4wd tour, jet boat and kayaking. The jet boat is about 1.5 hours and the funyak portion lasts about 2 hours. The entire Funyak adventure will take about 9 hours if departing from Queenstown.

Hi; Will you be operating on New Years Day 2013?

Hi Dragan, yes Funyaks is operating New Years Day 2013.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Belinda) on 11th Oct 12 at 10:48

We are looking at booking in late August, do we still require swimmers? Also is a vegetarian lunch available. Cheers

Hi Luke, yes it is still recommended you take your swimwear and towel even during winter along with warm clothing plus hat, gloves, windproof outer jacket and sunglasses

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Belinda) on 26th Jul 12 at 12:07

Hi I am coming to Queenstown in Oct. I will be travelling on my own - is it OK to be solo.

Hi Carolyn, you certainly can book the Funyaks for one person as they will either pair you up with another person in the group or the guide will go in your kayak.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Belinda) on 26th Jun 12 at 17:10

Hi, we are in Queenstown from 21 - 27 July and my son who is currently 4 will be turning 5 on 21 August. Is he able to participate on the fun yaks with an adult? Thanks

Hi Carmel, unfortunately the age restriction is strictly 5 for the Funyaks and although they would love to take your 4 year old it is unfortunately not possible for this trip.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Belinda) on 14th Jun 12 at 11:52

We will be visiting in July, and are booked on this tour. How do we dress for this tour?! We are coming in from the states and I am starting to pack!

Hi Pam, you are provided with life jackets, wet suits, booties and spray jackets from Funyaks but you will also need to bring with you warm clothing including a hat, gloves, windproof outer jacket, sunglasses, swimwear and a towel.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Belinda) on 8th Jun 12 at 16:12

ALready scheduled for 7 Apr. 2012 and curious if any weather gear is provided? Also, is trip cancelled if it rains?

Hi Lisa. Yes on the Funyaks trip in Queenstown you are supplied with a wetsuit, booties, rain jacket and life jacket and all you need to bring is a small bag with swimwear and a towel. The trip will not be cancelled if its lightly rain but if the weather is pretty bad (ie. its raining heavily) then the jetboats wont be able to operate so the entire trip will be cancelled and you will be able to reschedule to another day or receive a full refund.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Lisa) on 5th Apr 12 at 08:31

Hi Just wondering if it's possible to arrange for a pick up from our accom at Breakfree The Point 239 Frankton Rd Queenstown. Also, are there still plenty of places available on 7th April ? we're looking at booking for 3 adults. Can we secure booking with credit card details and pay closer to the event date Thank you.

Hi Jinny. The Funyaks bus can pick up from all local Queenstown accommodation. Sometimes you are required to walk a short distance to the nearest big hotel. In this case, you would be picked up from Oak Shores which is just next door to The Point apartments. There is currently space on the 7th April however this is likely to book up given its Easter weekend. We can only secure your booking once you book and pay online via our website.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 15th Feb 12 at 13:09

Do you have to go on the jet boat on the Funyaks tour or is there another way to get to the start of the Funyaks?

Hi Erica, yes the Funyaks tour does only offer the jet boat ride to the start of the Funyaks however this is one of the best parts of the day. It is a fast ride with a few spins but is more of a scenic ride through the Dart River as oppose to a thrill seeking journey like the Shotover Jet.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Belinda) on 20th Jan 12 at 16:21

Hi, interested in the Funyak tour. What happens if it's raining?

Hi Graham, this is a fantastic tour. If there is a bit of light rain then the trip will go ahead. If it is really heavy rain then they will cancel and you will be able to get a refund. I have done this trip in both clear sky days and on a drizzly day and both were amazing. It sounds strange to say that the trip was good in light rain, but the mountains and clouds hanging low over the rivers and mountains makes it look amazing.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Kris) on 7th Jan 12 at 12:06

Hi there We are arriving in Queenstown on the 13th Jan for 7 nights and would love to do something like this, what are our chances of getting a booking once we arrive.

Hi Sam. The Funyaks has been booking up nearly a week in advance over the busy summer period in Queenstown so I would highly recommend you book before you arrive in town. There is space at this stage during the week starting the 13th January but I suspect it will book out soon.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 2nd Jan 12 at 17:13

Hi, me, my husband and 2 gals aged 11 and 12 years are interested to book the Funyaks adventure. Can we book on 27th Dec?. May i know if we are require to wear waterproof shoes. Crocs? slippers? normal swimwear? Will you provide the wetsuit? What are the difference in fees if we drive on our own from hotel to Glenorchy? Any further discounts for 2 adults and 2 childs package?

Hi Jess, The Dart River Safaris Funyaks is an amazing trip. At the moment there is still space for all of you on the 27th Dec. This is our busiest time of the year so we highly recomend booking in advance. Many days around the Christmas and New Year period are already full. You need to take warm clothes, swimwear and a towel. They will provide you with all the clothing and wetsuits that you will need for the Funyaks, they also supply you with footwear. They provide free transport from Queenstown, but you are more than welcome to drive the 45km to Glenorchy yourself. It is a stunning drive with a few great spots to pull in and take some photos. If you would like to book this trip please go back onto our website and type Funyaks into the search bar.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Kris) on 17th Dec 11 at 14:42

This trip looks amazing, do we need any kayaking experience to be able to do this trip? We are in our 50's and really keen to see some of the scenery and Lord of the Rings locations in Glenorchy, this looks like a great way to see it with the jetboat ride as well. Is the jetboat ride very fast or scarey?

Hi Peter. No kayaking experience required on the Funyaks trip mate and you're right, it's a great trip if you want to see some spectacular Lord of the Rings locations and scenery. The jetboat ride is pretty fast and they do a few quick turns but it's more of a scenic jet boat ride through the wide dart river and Mt Aspiring National park compared to the thrilling jet boat ride experienced on the Shotover Jet through the narrow Shotover Canyons.

Comment by: Everything Travel Group (Callum) on 9th Dec 11 at 15:35

Hi, How fit do you have to be is there a lot of walking involved as my Mum cant walk to far and not up hills.

Comment by: linda Mordaunt on 5th Dec 14 at 20:50

Hi Linda. There is not a lot of walking at all on the Funyaks trip. The short amount of walking is very flat with no hills at all. It is suitable for all levels of fitness.

My Guide Queenstown

Best Kayaking in Queenstown

Local recommendations from our my guide queenstown team.

One of the areas's most popular activities, Kayaking in Queenstown is available around every watery corner. Lake Wakatipu is the perfect wide open space on which to indulge this most peaceful of pastimes. Solo and guided trips available.

Queenstown Kayaking is a great way to explore the stunning Lake Wakatipu, and the slower sections of the Kawarau and Shotover Rivers. Whether you're a first timer, or experienced canoeist, there are great facilities here. Queenstown operators can provide half and full day 'eco excursions', which are great for finding out more about the landscape you're paddling in.   In Glenorchy, Rippled Earth will take you to the conservation areas of Pig and Pigeon Islands, and include lunch on the beach. Close to the centre of Queenstown you may prefer a paddle around the shores and secluded coves of Lake Wakatipu - real water therapy.

My 3-Day Lord of the Rings tour around Queenstown

From Paradise to the Pillars of the Kings

Queenstown tops the list for adventure travel in New Zealand, without question. What I didn’t know before I pencilled three days in Queenstown into my South Island self-drive tour is just how amazing the area is for visiting Lord of the Rings filming locations.

Day 1 of my Lord of the Rings tour around Queenstown

Lord of the Rings Tour Queenstown Kawarau River

I arrived in Queenstown after a long but lazy day driving from Christchurch. After hours drifting through golden amber grasslands and unpopulated alpine peaks, driving into Queenstown was like hitting the Strip in Las Vegas. However, I was not to be tempted by Queenstown’s nightlife. I had an early start.

I reported to Extreme Green Rafting the next morning at 7:45 am, ready for a half-day white-water rafting tour on the Kawarau river. The Kawarau River cuts through a sheer gorge with incredible rocky scenery stretching up on either side of it. It has a mixture of grade 2 and 3 rapids – including the longest rapid you can raft in New Zealand – and I didn’t get much chance to take in the filming location of the imposing Pillars of the Kings in The Lord of the Rings as we drifted past.

After returning to Queenstown and reuniting with my car, I again headed out in the same direction as we’d driven earlier, around Frankton Arm at the eastern bump of Lake Wakatipu towards what would be my next stop for the night: Deer Park Heights . Overlooking the Queenstown Golf Course at Kelvin Heights just a 20-minute drive from town, Deer Park Heights is a working deer station that surely has the most picturesque setting of any farm in the world. Unspoilt panoramic views show the Remarkables ski area (the slopes of Dimrill Dale in The Fellowship of the Ring ) in one direction, Lake Wakatipu in another, and the flat green patches of the Kawarau River basin in another, all fringed by dramatic snow-capped peaks.

Peter Jackson wasn’t going to miss taking advantage of this incredible natural setting, and there were many Lord of the Rings scenes filmed here. The most famous is the warg attack and the cliff Aragorn gets dragged off in The Two Towers , though this is also the film location for part of Gandalf’s ride to Minas Tirith. Unfortunately for day-touring Lord of the Rings fans to Queenstown , Deer Park Heights has been closed to public visitors for almost a decade now.

However, one way you can enjoy this amazing part of the world is their new ‘glam camping’ site. Glamping is becoming more and more popular throughout New Zealand, as people are rightfully enchanted by the chance to have the rugged beauty of untouched natural surroundings, away from city lights and the sounds of civilisation, combined with all the modern comforts you’re used to (plus some extra luxury you may not be so used to).

Having read online reviews about the sunsets from Deer Park Heights, I had been sure to arrive in plenty of time. Once I had settled into my spacious canvas tent (and grilled up the lamb and mint sausages I bought earlier) I took a short walk to the western summit of Deer Park for one of the best sunsets I’ve ever encountered. After that, I sat outside my tent under the vast, unspoilt sky for a long time, before I managed to pull myself away from gazing at the stars and into my big, welcoming bed. I needed a good sleep for another early start and packed day of LOTR sites and activities.

Day 2 of my Lord of the Rings tour around Queenstown

Lord of the Rings Tour Queenstown Arrowtown River

After an amazing sunrise it was even harder leave Deer Park Heights. However, I had plenty to look forward to for the day ahead with a visit to Arrowtown.

Arrowtown is a sleepy, leafy village that is one of the best places to get a feel for what small-town New Zealand was like in the 19th century. The busy little main street feels like they still have places where you could tie up your horse. They don’t. Though they do have a cute cinema, a French restaurant, and a bakery on the corner whose pies (I’m told) are legendary. Unfortunately, it was a bit early to justify eating a pie as I arrived in Arrowtown just before 9am, giving myself plenty of time to tackle the 6-hour return hike to Macetown.

The Arrow River, from which Arrowtown takes its name, featured prominently in one of the most memorable scenes from The Fellowship of the Ring . Walk just a few minutes from the main street and you’ll find the filming location (with a small visitor centre) for the Ford of Bruinen, across which Arwen carries a poisoned Frodo before challenging the Nazgul to “come and claim him”. They do. Well, at least they try. But Arwen mutters something in Elvish and the river cascades in rapids led by galloping horses, washing the Ring-wraiths away.

The dramatic rocky gorge through which the river smashes was not shot at the same location as the ford on the Arrow River where Arwen and Frodo cross. It’s not far away though, on the Shotover River up Skippers Canyon, which is accessible by a treacherous, often closed 4WD track from Arrowtown. Where I was headed – Macetown – was straight in the middle of these two rivers, at least on the map. There was not much straight about the walk there though, following a winding shingle trail through some stunning landscapes and across several rivers (I lost track of which direction I was facing after the second). It’s a well marked, well used trail, however, and I made it to the historic gold mining settlement at Macetown (replete with some interesting 19th-century relics like the still in-tact, stone-built ‘Bakehouse’ and ‘Schoolmaster’s House’, as well as the remnants of vegetable gardens created by Macetown’s early Chinese settlers) in a time not too far off the allotted 6 hours.

Back to civilisation around 4pm and (for some crazy reason) still feeling in the mood for walking, I decided to take a little stroll from my cosy AirBnB Arrowtown accommodation to see more of the town. Beyond the main drag, there’s not a lot in terms of activity, but there’s certainly no shortage of photo ops. I was told that the park across the road from where I was staying (Wilcox Green) was the filming location where Isildur, wearing around his neck the ring he had just recently pulled from Sauron’s severed finger, tumbled down a hill into the river, where he lost the ring (and his life, to several orc arrows in the back). I couldn’t find the exact spot where this seemed to take place, though several parts of the wooded area I explored between the park and the river could easily pass for it, so I’ll take their word. I had planned to try the French restaurant and catch a movie at the cinema, but my arrogance at taking a walk straight after taking a long walk caught up with me and I collapsed into bed early. I never made it to the bakery either. Plenty to come back to Arrowtown for, then.

Day 3 of my Lord of the Rings tour around Queenstown

Lord of the Rings Tour Queenstown Glenorchy

Good thing I had a good sleep, because my biggest driving day of the whole trip was ahead of me – a whole one hour, back through Queenstown to the northern edge of Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy, where I would be glamping that night. Here, where the lake splinters into sandy fingers creeping up into the Southern Alps, is where Peter Jackson chose to be Isengard and the realm of Saruman . I found it surprisingly hard to find a location tour that didn’t leave from Queenstown. Since I had already booked my glamping accommodation (after hearing rave reviews about it) in Glenorchy well in advance, I decided to do it on my own.

To help with my self-drive Glenorchy Lord of the Rings tour , I made a point of stopping into a bookshop on my way through Queenstown to pick up a copy of Ian Brodie’s Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook. Released around the same time as The Fellowship of the Ring , this pocket-sized publication is an oldie (and obviously pre-dates any The Hobbit film sites) but still seems to be one of the most trusted for anybody planning their own self-drive LOTR tour in New Zealand . Having thumbed through the Glenorchy-relevant parts of this guidebook over coffee at a Queenstown lakefront cafe, I made a stop earlier than planned on the road to Glenorchy.

Just 10 minutes beyond the edge of Queenstown’s sprawling building construction is a tiny spot on the map known as Closeburn. It was here, with the peak of Mount Crichton lurking just around the corner, that became Amon Hen on the big screen, and so it was here that Merry and Pippin were captured by orcs following the death of Boromir.

I got back in the car and continued following the thick dark blue of Lake Wakatipu around to Glenorchy, making myself known to Mrs. Woolly’s Campground , an impressive glamping location at what used to be the Glenorchy general store where I would be resting my head later. The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook then directed me further on past the head of the lake towards the aptly named Paradise – unsurprisingly, the sign telling you you’ve arrived in Paradise seems to be a very popular place to take a profile photo. Before being the setting for Jane Campion’s critically acclaimed TV drama Top of the Lake, Paradise was also a favourite filming location for Peter Jackson: among other things, the beech forests on the road leading towards Paradise are the Elvish realm and woods of Lothlorien, which Legolas claimed to be “the fairest of all the dwellings of my people” – pretty big words for an immortal being.

A short drive further on I reached the main event: the Isengard Lookout. Here, far more so than at the site of the Pillars of the Kings on the Kawarau river, you didn’t need to imagine computer-generated graphics. Seeping out in front of me was the flat, grey, marshy land edged by jagged mountains that even I (a mild Lord of the Rings fan throwing my memory back a decade or so) could instantly recognise as the desolate, treeless circle emanating from Saruman’s Tower of Isengard, surrounded by fiery holes gauged into the ground where Uruk-hai slap white hand prints on each other in that scary scene etched into my memory from the first time I saw it nearly 20 years ago.

I have a feeling that the images I’ve taken in over these few days visiting Lord of the Rings sites outside Queenstown could stick around in my mind for just as long, at least.

1. skyline gondola: panoramic views.

Queensland's landscape is stunning from every perspective, but the most mind-blowing point of view is offered on a magical ride on the Skyline Gondola. Float over the steep hill that towers majestically over the city - as the houses get smaller, the region expands before your very eyes. Behold Lake Wakatipu snaking through the valley, and let yourself be stunned by the snow-capped peaks in the distance. There is a restaurant at the top, alongside outdoor entertainment like the popular luge.

2. The Remarkables Ski Area: Living up to the Name

One of the greatest stops further afield, Skipper's Canyon, is nestled in the folds of the mountain range. Here, the Shotover River flows through a scenic gorge for over 10 miles, with cliffs dropping off dramatically into gushing waters below. A narrow suspension bridge traverses the canyon over a drop down below that you won't soon forget, and the wilderness on either side is well worth exploring too.

5. Queenstown Gardens: As Lush as it Gets

Living up to its international reputation, New Zealand is a world of natural wonders - even in the heart of a city. These gardens flaunt an incredible density of unique flora and fauna, with an emphasis on native trees and plants, each more exotic than the next. The tiny peninsula that extends into Lake Wakatipu also offers great facilities for rest and recreation - from lounging fields to skating rinks.
