About chris rowthorn tours.

I’m Chris Rowthorn, the co-founder of Inside Kyoto and the Lonely Planet Kyoto guidebook writer since 1996. I’ve spent the last 20 years seeking out the hidden gems of Kyoto: tiny temples, serene gardens, preserved lanes, local restaurants and atmospheric shrines. At my company, Chris Rowthorn Tours, I offer five different private Kyoto walking tours with your own English-speaking tour guide.

Kyoto Walking Tour Guides

I have spent years finding and training the best guides in all of Kyoto. Licensed, professional bilingual guides who love Kyoto as much as I do. But, don’t take my word for it, have a look at the TripAdvisor Reviews for Chris Rowthorn Tours.

Please note that I have only a limited number of guides. Thus, I recommend booking as far ahead as possible, especially during April ( the cherry blossom season ) and November ( the fall foliage season ).

Kyoto Walking Tour Prices

The tour price is for a private group of 1 to 6 people. Please note the price is NOT per person. For example, if there is one person booking a four-hour walking tour, the price is ¥40,000 total. If there are six of you, the price is still ¥40,000 total (making it much cheaper per person).

How To Make A Kyoto Walking Tour Inquiry

Follow the links above to see full details of each of the five walking tours and to send an inquiry. We’ll get back to you very soon afterwards to confirm availability and discuss your requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why hire a private guide.

You don’t need a guide to enjoy Kyoto, but having a guide will add a lot of depth to your understanding of the city. A guide will also free you from having to think about the logistics of getting around and making the most efficient use of your time. A guide can also help you enjoy local restaurants without any communication difficulties.

Hiring a guide for a tour on your first day will give you the confidence to explore on following days on your own and a guide can give you some advice about what to see later in your trip.

Who Runs These Tours?

My company Chris Rowthorn Tours provides these tours. We have been running licensed tours in Kyoto for 10 years. I have spent years finding and training the best guides in all of Kyoto. Licensed, professional bilingual guides who love Kyoto as much as I do. But, don’t take my word for it, have a look at reviews of Chris Rowthorn Tours on TripAdvisor .

Is The Price Per Person?

No! This is the PER GROUP price, i.e., it’s the price for a private group of 1 to 6 people. For example, if there is one person booking a four-hour walking tour, the price is ¥40,000 total. If there are six of you, the price is still ¥40,000 (making it much cheaper per person). The tour group is private. That means there is only you and your family or you and your friends on the tour and no one else. Please note that we do NOT put different individuals or groups together, even upon request.

Do I Get A Discount If We Are Less Than 6 People?

The price is for a private group for 1 to 6 people. There are no discounts if there are less than the maximum number of people.

How Do I Pay For My Private Kyoto Walking Tour?

Payment is in cash at the conclusion of the tour or by credit card in advance of the tour (we can set up credit card billing). If you choose to pay in cash, please note that we accept yen cash or the equivalent amount in US/Euro cash.

Can I Cancel A Tour After Booking It?

You can cancel a tour with no penalty up to 48 hours before the scheduled start of the tour. If you cancel between 24 and 48 hours of the scheduled start, we charge you 50% of the price of the tour. Cancellations made fewer than 24 hours from the scheduled start of the tour incur a full 100% charge.

What’s Not Included In The Tour Price?

The tour fee covers the price of the guide. Transport to and from the tour and during the tours, drinks and snacks along the way, and temple/garden/entrance fees are not included in this price (these costs are usually minimal). Please note that for full-day tours and six-hour tours, the guide will join you for lunch and we ask that you cover the cost of the guide’s lunch and their transport during the tour (usually a minimal expense).

How Do We Meet With Our Guide?

Your guide can meet you in the lobby of your hotel, ryokan, guesthouse or at any other convenient spot. They can also drop you off there if you wish at the conclusion of the tour.

Will My Guide Speak Fluent English?

My guides all speak high-level international-standard English and most have studied abroad. They have all passed the Japan National Guiding License, which includes a very strict English language section.

Do We Stop To Eat?

On two- or four-hour tours, you most likely will not stop for a proper sit-down meal (although, since it’s a fully private tour, if you chose to do so, you could). On six- and eight-hour tours, you will most likely stop for lunch en route. You might also stop for a drink at a teahouse or coffee shop en route. Please remember that these are fully private tours – the choice is up to you!

Where Can I Rest Along The Way?

Please do not feel that you have to walk at a certain pace for the entire tour. Or, for that matter, that you have to walk the complete distance or even finish the tour. Because these are fully private tours, you can rest as often as you wish: on park benches, in teahouses, at temple gardens, in restaurants and so on. And, if you tire of walking, you can always jump in a taxi.

Is It Easy To Find A Restroom?

Restrooms are very easy to find in Japan. Almost all attractions like temples have them, as do parks and shopping malls.

How Do We Get Home At The End Of Our Tour?

It is your choice: Your guide can escort you back to your lodgings or can simply explain the best way to get there on your own. Or, if the day is not yet over, your guide can point you in the direction of additional sightseeing. Please keep in mind that if you choose to have your guide accompany you to your lodgings, this will be on the clock, so that you will have to leave some of the sights a little early to make it back before the end of the tour.

Nara is, as you may know, the place with the deer. This surreal experience is one you absolutely cannot miss! Everyone in Japan seems to be polite, even the animals! These deer will actually bow to you for a snack. You can't possibly be in the Kansai region without visiting Japan's 2nd biggest city: Osaka ! With a similarly bustling city vibe like Tokyo complete with great nightlife, chopping, and the nation's best food, Osaka is a mecca you can't pass up. If you don't, then you should know that Kobe is famous for its Wagyu (Japanese beef)! so many words can be used to describe this incredible delicacy, so we leave it to you to choose them. While Kobe boasts arguably the best beef in the world, it's also full of other food to eat, places to go, and sights to see.

⛩️ Why you should join our tours in Kyoto

Exploring Kyoto is more daunting of an adventure than you might imagine! While the city itself is well prepared to accommodate foreign guests, that doesn't mean every spot, every location, and certainly every person you might meet maintains the same level of English. And, it's important to note that it's hard to access any places that might be off the tourist path without someone to interpret, let alone understand the meaning and importance of your surroundings. Kyoto also seems to attract considerably massive crowds, having a leader to get you through is a great relief. You'll undoubtedly be able to add value to every destination, meal, or other experience. By having guidance, interpretation, and a genuine helpful attitude of a local, we are sure that you'll be left with lasting memories of in depth experiences here in Tokyo.

We at Japan Wonder Travel are a team of passionate, seasoned travelers who love to explore and help guests discover meaningful experiences. With our expertise combined with our excitement, it's easy to assure your Tokyo adventure will be nothing short of remarkable.

But hey, even if you're pressed for time, a single day packed with a carefully chosen Kyoto tour and spontaneous discoveries can be an exhilarating whirlwind into the rich tapestry that is Kyoto, promising a canvas of vibrant memories and heartwarming experiences.

Kyoto versus Osaka: Duration dilemma

Kyoto versus Osaka

Ah, the age-old debate: Should you spend more time in Kyoto or dart over to Osaka for a portion of your trip? Well, let me share a little insight from my countless adventures in both cities.

While Osaka dazzles with its modern vibe and bustling streets, Kyoto takes the crown for a deep dive into a rich cultural tapestry woven with ancient temples, stunning gardens, and traditions that breathe life into every Kyoto day.

The great location of both cities means you can easily access one from the other, with just a 15-minute bullet train ride (or under an hour train ride by local train) separating them, making day trips from Kyoto to Osaka (or vice versa) a breezy affair. But if I had to choose — and it's a tough choice, mind you — I’d nudge you to hang your hat longer in Kyoto to truly soak in all the mesmerizing tales the city has to tell.

Economizing your trip

Best day trips from Kyoto

One thing I quickly learned from my many visits to Kyoto is how to make the most of my budget while still having a whale of a time! Let's talk JR Pass; it's basically your golden ticket to exploring the city and beyond, offering you unlimited travel on direct trains and even some buses. Whether you're planning a day trip to a nearby city or setting off on one of the best day trips from Kyoto, hopping on a direct train with your JR Pass in hand makes it a breeze.

It's not just about convenience; it also saves you from those extra costs that can add up quicker than you'd think.

And hey, it’s not just about the destinations; the train rides themselves can be an experience, offering views of breathtaking landscapes along the way!

Now, let’s chat about budgeting for those little extras that make a trip special. While Kyoto offers a wealth of experiences, some come with a premium price tag.

Balance your itinerary with a mix of high-end and affordable delights

For instance, you can easily spend a day wandering around vibrant neighborhoods or taking an easy day trip to a beautiful location without burning a hole in your pocket. It’s all about playing it smart and knowing where to save and where to splurge to create a rich tapestry of experiences that bring out the vibrant, heartwarming, and absolutely captivating spirit of Kyoto.

Kyoto fall

The History of Kyoto : Japan’s Former Capital

The history of Kyoto goes all the way back to the 8th century. The city was built as the capital of Japan at that time and was home to the Imperial Court until 1868 when it moved to Tokyo . No longer the capital of the country today, it is still the capital of the prefecture and superior to Tokyo when it comes to historical sites, relics, and monuments. Because it has managed to retain a charming traditional atmosphere in many neighborhoods it draws millions of domestic as well as international tourists each year. We have great package tours that include

Archeologists have found sites that date back all the way to the Jomon and Yayoi period of more than 10.000 years ago, but it wasn’t until the 6th century that the area has been colonized more permanently. This was the Hata clan who was originally from Korea. These people were silk farmers and became wealthy because of the trade in silk products. They built their family temple in the Western part of what would become Kyoto, as other powerful clans started moving into the northern part of the area.

Maiko in front of a pagoda in Kyoto, Japan. Kyoto has a long history.

Kyoto as a Capital: the Heian Era

Kyoto became the capital city of Japan in 794 after Nara and has been built to resemble the capital of China during the Tang dynasty (today’s Xi’an). The city was rectangular in shape and was 4.5 by 5.2 kilometers big. The city slowly started to expand towards the east, and powerful clans built their residences in central locations of the new capital city. The Heian period was a relatively peaceful era compared to what came after when the balance of power shifted from Kyoto to the east of Japan.

Kamakura Era and Sengoku Era

While it was the Emperor and the families surrounding the Imperial Family who had the political power in the Heian period, in 1185 the Minamoto clan grabbed this power and brought it to the new capital city Kamakura located 40 kilometers south of nowadays Tokyo. This new political structure is called a shogunate and had the shogun as a military leader ruling the country. When the shogunate in Kamakura fell in 1333, the power once again shifted back to Kyoto where they established another shogunate.

This was the time when many temples that we still can see today were constructed such as the Golden Pavillion and the Nanzenji. Before this time, the construction of temples had been forbidden because they didn’t want too much political influence from religious institutions. However, during the Kamakura period, Buddhism became a lot more powerful and popular and this made it possible to commission the building of many new temples. Unfortunately, a large part of the city was destroyed during a war in the mid-15th century.

In the late 16th century the civil war was finally ended by Toyotomi Hideyoshi , who then commissioned the building of the beautifully decorated Jurakutei Palace and Fushimi castle of which some parts still survive today.

Edo Era and Meiji Era

In the Edo period which lasted from the early 17th century to the mid 19th century, political power moved from Kyoto to Edo, which is today’s Tokyo. The Tokugawa family’s shogunate was in power and the same agents who had been the representatives for the shogun in Kyoto since the Kamakura period were still appointed. In 1603 a shogunal residence was built in Kyoto, this is the Nijo Castle that can still be seen today. The Edo period was relatively peaceful, and thus arts and culture could flourish. Kyoto was a center of traditional arts and crafts such as ceramics, lacquerware , doll making, and fan making. The shogunate even borrowed money from some of the richer merchants in Kyoto.

When the capital moved from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1868 this of course had a big influence on the city. They felt they needed to compensate and did their best to rapidly modernize the city. They dug the Biwa Lake Canal, Japan’s first hydroelectric power plant, and some of the country’s first trams. Because Kyoto doesn’t have a harbor and space like Osaka and Tokyo, modern industries weren’t so fast to settle there, but traditional industries continued to thrive more than elsewhere. The area near Fushimi Inari, for example, is still famous for its excellent sake. Kyoto is also a center of higher education and boasts a number of internationally renowned universities. There are also numerous important museums in Kyoto.

WW2 and After

Kyoto has been spared the worst of the war because if its historical value to the world. Henry Stimson who had a big vote in which cities in Japan were to be bombed during WW2 refused to bomb Kyoto for this reason, and also for the more personal reason that he visited Kyoto (once for his honeymoon) and didn’t want to ruin his beautiful memories of the city like that. This is why Kyoto is the only larger city in Japan that still retains its old atmosphere in certain areas, and where you can find original old buildings like machiya .
