The Elephant Hotel

The Elephant Hotel is nationally significant for its association with American circus history.  It was built by Hachaliah Bailey, who became renowned after he acquired the second elephant brought to America (about 1805). Bailey toured with the elephant that became known as Old Bet, acquiring other wild animals and effectively introducing the traveling “menagerie” as popular entertainment in the region. Neighbors and relatives joined him in his menagerie enterprise, sometimes as partners, sometimes as competitors.  The excitement spread to North Salem, Carmel, Brewster, and other adjoining towns.  Soon menageries associated through the Elephant Hotel merged with traveling circus performers to create the American circus that is still popular today. In 1835, the Zoological Institute, a monopoly of menagerie and circus owners, was incorporated at this site. The Elephant Hotel became the symbolic center of this industry.

Hachaliah Bailey (1775-1845) built the classic three-story brick edifice, a rare example of Federal style domestic architecture, between 1820 and 1825, at the height of the menageries’ appeal. The words ELEPHANT HOTEL emblazoned across the building commemorate Bailey’s renowned elephants, the first of which was Old Bet.  In 1827 a gilt wood replica of an elephant was mounted on iron scrollwork atop a granite shaft, in front of the Hotel.

Situated at the intersection of the Croton and the Peekskill turnpikes, the Hotel became the economic and social center of Somers and the surrounding area.  Not only was it the meeting place for the menagerie owners and a stopping place for drovers, it was also a stagecoach stop for travelers between New York City and points north and east.  In 1839, the Farmers and Drovers Bank of Somers was organized and housed in the Hotel.  Numerous balls, soirees, dance schools and other events took place here. The Elephant Hotel was purchased by the Town of Somers and adapted for use as a town hall in 1927.  It remains the focal point of town activity, with the first two floors as the seat of Town government, and the Somers Historical Society and Museum on the third floor.

On April 5, 2005, the Elephant Hotel was designated a National Historic Landmark, recognizing it as the oldest existing building of significance in the development of the American Circus.

Elephantine Colossus: Brooklyn’s most unusual hotel

Visitors to pre-20th century Coney Island would have enjoyed a most unusual site — Elephantine Colossus , more famously known as ‘the Elephant Hotel’, an actual guest house which stood watch over the entertainment district’s beach amusements.

The hotel opened in 1885, a 12-storey pachyderm with 31 organ-themed guest rooms that faced the ocean and featured an observation deck and a cigar store in its leg.

Below: an 1885 diagram

The press was given a tour when it opened that spring: “The ‘Stomach Room’ … is 60 by 35 feet and trinagular in shape. From the stomach room the explorers walked through the elphant’s diaphragm and along his liver up into his left lung, where a museum is to be situated during the summer. Then the course was from the lung into the ‘Shoulder Room, then up the ‘Cheek Room, where they looked through the elephant’s right eye out onto the ocean.”

Another newspaper account from 1889 gives a charming, nostalgic description of the scene: “The discordant notes of a dozen barrel organs, calliopes and orchestrions attached to the merry-go-rounds of Coney Island floated in on the cool sea breeze, the locomotive whistles of constantly coming and going trains on the half dozen railways and the engine bells lent their share to the busy sounds from the outside world, while the rattle of the toboggan slide built around the big elephant hotel acted as castanets for the other music.”

A family on the beach in 1885, the year the elephant hotel opened. Those clothes look hot!

Brooklyn Museum/Brooklyn Public Library,

If that doesn’t seem absurd enough, in the 1890s its oddly shaped rooms served as a brothel. According to Emil R. Salvini , “‘Seeing the elephant’ became synonymous with an adventure that you would not discuss with your kids.”

Like so many things from Coney Island’s early days, the hotel burned down, a victim of a fire on Sept. 27, 1896 that also took out the nearby Shaw Channel Chute , a roller coaster that encircled the hotel. It was, not surprisingly, often referred to as the Elephant Scenic Railway.

James Lafferty, the owner of the hotel, also built the New Jersey roadside attraction, Lucy the Elephant , which you can still find hanging out in Margate City.

A few years later, in 1898 the famous Elephant was built in Paris for the World Festival of 1900 (which also served for the building of the Eiffel Tower). Strangely enough it was also a brothel at a given time 🙂 It is featured in the film The Moulin Rouge! (2001) Maybe the same constructer?

I worked as a tour guide in the surviving elephant: we were told that Lafferty only built the two. A third elephant, called The Light of Asia, was built by someone else in Cape May. Because Lafferty patented the design, they had to license their building’s design with him. This is the first I’ve heard of a sikilar building overseas.

On some maps of the era there’s another structure close to the elephant labeled the “Baby Elephant.” Not sure what it was though. I’ve never seen any pictures or mention of it anywhere else. The way things went in old Coney Island I’m guessing it opened and then immediately burst into flames.

That is interesting.

any idea what was the approximate address of the elephant?

The Elephant was on the north side of Surf avenue, between West 12th street and Jones walk (where Luna Park Furniture is). It was situated a little bit back from the avenue behind a row of stores, so today it would be in that park just behind the el.

I have discovered, among my mother’s belongings, a photograph, glued onto a card (kind of slightly heavier than postcard weight), of this building while it was still under construction with scaffolding around it. You can see it at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jillblevins/sets/72157627327930751/

I’m amazed no one in modern times has tried to build it. I would totally want to stay in an elephant resort.

Stay Overnight in Lucy, an Elephant-Shaped Hotel on the New Jersey Shore

Lucy the Elephant in Margate

Perhaps you have seen photographs of the famous Coney Island “Elephant Colossus,” a 200-foot tall elephant structure with 31 rooms that once stood proudly and prominently on Surf Avenue. It was lost in a fire in 1896, so none of us would have had a chance to stay in it. Now, in New Jersey, you can experience something quite like it: Lucy the Elephant, which is now available on Airbnb located in Margate along the Jersey Shore.

Lucy is about half the height of its Coney Island counterpart, with six stories, but hails from around the same time period. In fact, was designed by the same man, a James V. Lafferty from Philadelphia who held the patent. Lucy, who was built in 1891, was originally  also nearly suffered the same fate as its Coney Island relative after being struck by lightning on several occasions. Lucy’s current caretaker is Richard Helfant, director of the non-profit Save Lucy Committee, proclaimed to the New York Times that Lucy is “the oldest surviving example of zoomorphic architecture on Earth” and she has been designated a national landmark.

Interior of Lucy the Elephant

You enter through a door in Lucy’s left foot. Inside, there’s a Victorian chic to the decor. You store your clothing and belongings in an antique trunk. Your bed has the backdrop of peacocks and is placed between a ornamented wooden split staircase. The furnishings are to the T: Oriental carpets, China, and more in rich, bold colors. There’s even a balcony on top with a view of the ocean and porthole windows, which are Lucy’s eyes.

In a press release, Airbnb calls Lucy, “a tribute to the golden age of roadside Americana.” In addition to a hotel, Lucy has also had other lives as a summer home and a tavern, along with her original purpose: to attract people to the yet-to-be developed area of New Jersey. The decor, which was furnished by Airbnb for the stay, is a tribute to its one summer in 1902 serving as a vacation home for a family of six.

Liz Debold Fusco, Northeast Press Secretary for Airbnb, tells Untapped New York, “Lucy will be one of the most unique listings ever to appear on our platform but she is far from alone. The trend of unique listings on Airbnb is increasingly growing – in fact, searches for these types of stays have increased by 70% over the past year.” The Airbnb team works to feature the unique properties available on the booking platform.

Interested in staying in Lucy? You can now join other famous prior guests like Henry Ford, President Woodrow Wilson and the Sultan of Brunei for just $138 a night. It’s a short-term proposition, as only three dates will be available on March 17, 18 and 19. Bookings will begin on March 5. Airbnb will be making a donation to the Save Lucy Committee, as part of this promotion.

Kulen Elephant Forest Sanctuary Siem Reap

The Elephant camp

Our facilities were designed, built, and now operated, with the environment in mind. The main lodge building was built primarily out of recycled wood coming from the old elephant corral from the Angkor park. The lodge’s furniture is entirely reclaimed from unwanted inventory from the hotel industry in order to further reduce our carbon footprint, even the dinig tables are made of repurposed doors! The elephants benefit from a natural bath designed to be full year-round with natural groundwater. On hot days, it is by far their favorite place. In the dry season, the muddy shores are rich with clay and are perfect for elephant skincare.

Discover the Magic of countryside Temples with Our Siem Reap Elephant Tour – What to Expect

Siem Reap Elephant Tour with Temples: The Roluos Temple Group refers to a collection of temples located near the town of Roluos, about 13 km east of Siem Reap, nestled in the dense Cambodian countryside.

  • These temples are part of the Angkor-era and are considered some of the earliest permanent structures built by the Khmer civilization.
  • These temples date from the late 9th century and mark the starting point of Khmer civilization’s classical period.

The Beauty of Preah Ko Temple

Preah Ko Temple, the first temple built in the ancient city of Hariharalaya, is a sight to behold. It’s intricate carvings and serene atmosphere make it a must-visit.

As you explore this temple, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility that’s hard to put into words.

The Majesty of Bakong Temple

The Khmer Empire’s first sandstone temple mountain, Bakong Temple, is the next place we’ll take you.

Its architectural grandeur and historical significance make it a highlight of the tour.

As you climb the steps of this temple, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views that are worth every step.

The Charm of Chaw Srei Vibol Temple

Our tour also includes visiting Chaw Srei Vibol Temple, a less-visited but equally captivating temple.

Its peaceful surroundings and beautiful carvings make it a hidden gem. As you explore this temple, you’ll feel like an adventurer uncovering a secret part of Siem Reap’s history.

The Elephants of Kulen Forest Sanctuary

The Kulen Elephant Forest Sanctuary is without a doubt the highlight of our journey. You’ll get up close and personal with these magnificent creatures while learning about their tales and conservation efforts to safeguard them. You’ll feed them, accompany them on walks, and even take part in their bathing process. It’s an emotional encounter that will leave you with a newfound respect for these gentle giants.

To make the most of your 3 days Angkor Pass adventure, consider booking one of the unforgettable tours offered by MySiemReaptours . These tours provide a range of experiences, such as the Full-Day Angkor Wat Sunrise Tour , and the Private Siem Reap City Tour , which allows you to fully immerse yourself in the wonders of Siem Reap and off-the-beaten-path temples.

Why Is The Somers Town Hall Called The Elephant Hotel?

The origin of the Bailey Circus.

|

Q: Why is the Somers Town Hall called the Elephant Hotel, and why is there an elephant statue out in front of it? —Brice Derring, Berne, NY

A:  In 1808, a man named Hachaliah Bailey thought it would be a good idea to buy an African elephant to work on his farm. (The ol’ H-man liked to think outside the box, wouldn’t you say?)

Bailey found that using elephants as labor in Westchester County was weird and pretty ineffectual even in the early 1800s, but he did notice folks came out in droves to take a gander at the large gray pet he named Old Bet. So Hach did the only reasonable thing: He took his 15,000-pound girlfriend on tour. They became a wildly popular attraction, and, before long, they added some more exotic animals.

So was born the Bailey Circus.

Bailey built the hotel between 1820 and 1825, at the height of his tour’s popularity. It became a hub for circus owners, tourists, and animal lovers, and was a favorite stop of stagecoaches heading to and from New York City. Old Bet died in 1827, and Bailey had at least two other elephants, so he named the hotel in their honor.

The hotel is a beautiful example of Federal-style domestic architecture, and, in 1927, the Town of Somers purchased it and adapted it for use as its town hall. In 2005, it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Q:  An ocean away in the middle of England, I came across an article in your August 2010 edition entitled “A Stanford White Mansion for Sale in New Rochelle.” It intrigued me, as the picture that went with it was very similar to a picture of a New Rochelle house that was called All View at about the period of WWI.

The picture that I have is from an album of a New Yorker called Ernest Joseph Thal, who married an English lady called Frances Dunkels at the turn of the century. The resulting family is that of my wife. The Thal family apparently remained in New York; Ernest’s brother Louis was engaged in 1900 to Edith, the daughter of Isaac Guggenheim. The page in the album gives no hint of whose house All View was, who lived there, or why or exactly when he visited. When I discovered the picture in Westchester Magazine , I was struck by the similarities between the All View and the Stanford White house.

Make the Most of Your Outdoor Space

Can you help me with this? Are they the same house, and do you know who lived in All View around the time of WWI? If you can help me, I would be delighted and much obliged. —Geoffrey Corser, England

A: There it is, folks—we’ve gone worldwide! Talk about pressure! Now I’ve got to avoid an international incident and come up with a suitable answer.

The easy answer is that All View is indeed the same mansion as the Stanford White estate. Stanford White was one of the most renowned architects in our nation’s history. He designed and built the mansion in the late 1800s for the famous yachtsman C. Oliver Iselin, who, at the end of the 19 th century, was the Michael Jordan of the America’s Cup (yacht racing) and a true American hero.

In 1911, Iselin sold All View to Edward Schaefer, the president of both the Germania Bank and the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company. According to Patrick Raftery at the Westchester County Historical Society, Schaefer and his family stayed there through World War I and at least until 1929.

The more than 21,000-square-foot mansion, which overlooks the Long Island Sound in the Premium Point section of New Rochelle, sits on nearly three acres of land, has 28 rooms, 12 bathrooms, and a six-car garage. The grounds were designed by Central Park landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

Q: Is it true that Yoko Ono has John Lennon’s remains in an exclusive unmarked mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale?  —Tom Marks, White Plains

A:  John Lennon was cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery on December 10, 1980, two days after he was murdered. His remains are not in any of the mausoleums at Ferncliff, though the remains of Judy Garland, Cab Calloway, Ed Sullivan, Joan Crawford, and Aaliyah are all interred there. (Mausoleum costs at Ferncliff can exceed $250,000.)

Biographer Frederic Seaman claimed in his book The Last Days of John Lennon that, despite the fact that Lennon was horrified at the idea of being cremated, Yoko Ono insisted on it. Seaman wrote that one of Lennon’s bodyguards present at the cremation said that Lennon’s corpse actually grimaced right before his body entered the crematorium.

It remains unclear where his ashes are now. Some believe Yoko scattered them over Strawberry Fields in Central Park, while others say they remain in her possession.

Elephant Hotel

Introduction

Text-to-speech Audio

Somers, New York, is regarded as the “Cradle of the American Circus,” due to Hachaliah Bailey and his elephant, Old Bet. Bailey brought Old Bet to Somers around the year 1805, and thus caught the attention of many as this was the second elephant in history brought to the United States. This prompted the start of the traveling menagerie which brought much delight to those who came to see it. Bailey's work was a precursor to the modern circus, and inspired P.T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey to create what we now know as the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The Elephant Hotel was completed in 1825 to commemorate Old Bet. The building would later become the town center for the people of Somers. As of today, the Elephant Hotel unfortunately is not open to the public unless given permission to tour by contacting the Somers Historical Society.

Backstory and Context

The Elephant Hotel in Somers, New York, was built between 1820 and 1825 by Hachaliah Bailey. Bailey purchased an elephant to perform farm work, but found that the animal attracted a lot of attention from his neighbors (it was only the second elephant brought to the United States). He named the elephant Old Bet and began touring with her, eventually adding other animals to his show.

Bailey’s success with Old Bet and the other animals in his menagerie led others in the area to adopt similar career paths for themselves—touring the country with a variety of wild animals—and the idea of the modern circus was born. Hachaliah Bailey became the founder of the Bailey Circus, and for that reason, Somers is considered to be the birthplace of the American circus. Old Bet died on one of Bailey’s tours, thus prompting the construction of the Elephant Hotel.

The Elephant Hotel was built in Old Bet's honor and to serve as a meeting place for other menagerie owners as they traveled through the region. The property is emblazoned with the words “Elephant Hotel” across the building’s edifice and a gilt replica of an elephant is mounted on a tall shaft in front of the hotel.

Besides being a meeting spot for menagerie owners, the Elephant Hotel served several purposes throughout its history for over a century. The building became an economic center in 1839 with the introduction of the Farmers and Drovers Bank by Horace Bailey, who had since taken over ownership of the Elephant Hotel [3]. The bank would increase interest in the town, as it was only the second established bank that was founded in Westchester County. Unfortunately, the Elephant Hotel would begin to decline in popularity at the turn of the 20 th century. By the 1900s, the building was primarily used as a social space. Serving as a tearoom, residence, and inn, many town gatherings would occur here [3]. The invention of the automobile would luckily bring life back to the Elephant Hotel, as it was then utilized as a rest stop for travelers, but only for a limited time. The last surge of attraction to the building occurred in the early 1920s, with the release of D.W. Griffith’s silent film, America. The Elephant Hotel was used as a filming location for part of the film.

The Bailey family eventually handed over ownership, as the Town of Somers purchased the building in 1927. Since this change in ownership, the Elephant Hotel turned into the town hall. The building would then contain offices and serve as the site of town meetings on the first and second floors. Later, the third floor would house the Somers Historical Society and the Museum of the Early American Circus [2]. Today, the Elephant Hotel also houses offices for Planning & Engineering, Receiver of Taxes, Town Clerk, Town Historian, and the Town Justice Court.

In 1974, the Elephant Hotel was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. Then, in 2005, the building was registered as a National Landmark due to its history with the foundation of the American circus [1]. Since 2020, the Elephant Hotel is not open to the public for tours as it once did. However, a tour can still be scheduled through contact and approval by the Somers Historical Society.

The 5 Best Phuket Elephant Tours [2024 Reviews]

Photo of Krysha Thayer

The enchanting realm of Phuket may be known for its lush rainforests and turquoise blue waters, but it also boasts a bustling nightlife, rich heritage, and interesting experiences like going to an elephant sanctuary.

Elephants are some of the most majestic creatures in the world, yet it’s rare to have the opportunity to witness them so close up in a way that supports ethical and sustainable practices.

I had the opportunity to go on some elephant tours while there, and I recommend it to any of my friends or family who are in the area. I’ve decided to come up with a guide to the 5 top Phuket elephant tours available, so let’s jump right in!

Best Elephant Tours in Phuket

Quick answer: the 5 best phuket elephant tours for 2024.

  • A Morning with the Elephants at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary
  • Phuket: Elephant Sanctuary Small Group Tour
  • Phuket Elephant Sanctuary Canopy Walkway Tour
  • Full-Day Phuket Elephant Sanctuary Tour with Lunch and Dinner
  • An Afternoon with the Elephants at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

I can’t think of a better way to spend a morning in Phuket than learning about these gentle giants in a place that really focuses on their health and happiness.

A Morning with the Elephants at Phuket Sanctuary  is a comprehensive experience that was equally as educational as it was fun! If it’s your first time in the city, I can’t recommend this experience enough!

This tour, like every other on this guide, comes with a convenient hotel pickup so you don’t have to worry about booking separate transportation or figuring out how to get to a specific meetup point.

As you can probably deduce from the title, this tour starts off in the morning so you’ll have the rest of the day to explore and partake in any other activities you have planned!

Upon arrival at the Tree Top Sanctuary, we were welcomed with a tasty snack and provided with boots, socks, raincoats, mosquito spray, and umbrellas (it can get pretty wet out in the jungle).

We were given a briefing of what to expect, watching a video to give us a bit of background knowledge on the sanctuary’s efforts before heading out to see the beautiful animals.

Expand To See More See Less

We got to meet many different elephants while the employees fed them bananas, pineapples, and cucumbers. They even let us feed them under supervision, which was so much fun and made me realize just how sweet elephants really are!

I enjoyed learning about why it’s so important to have these conservation efforts, as elephants around the world are in danger (mostly due to human behavior).

After spending a couple of hours out there, we fueled up on a tasty vegetarian Thai meal! Overall, it was a fantastic way to spend a morning learning about an important cause while enjoying the natural beauty and food of Thailand!

elephant hotel tour

  • Duration: 4.5 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 7:30 AM & 11:30 AM
  • Includes: Elephant Care Class, elephant walk, Air-conditioned vehicle, Coffee and/or Tea, Lunch, Cooking Class

This next tour is a blast, and super convenient as you’ll start early in the morning and be back in time for lunch at your hotel!

The Phuket: Elephant Sanctuary Small Group Tour  is not only a fun adventure, it’s also an educational experience that will show you all about how elephants behave and why sanctuaries as so important. If you’re traveling with the entire family, this is one of the best options, in my opinion.

The fact that they pick you right up from your hotel is a big plus, as the sanctuary isn’t really that accessible otherwise.

I noticed right away that our guide was serious about bringing us a wonderful experience, answering any questions we had, and sharing interesting stories and anecdotes along the way.

The vehicle we traveled in was very comfortable, with padded seating, air conditioning, and large windows to view the beautiful scenery as we cruised along.

I was already enamored by the time we got to the Lake Phuket Elephant Nursery, where we were able to watch these stunning animals as they eat and bathe in their natural surroundings.

We fed them bananas and sugar cane, which I was admittedly a bit nervous about at first, but their sweet personalities soon disarmed me. Our guide told us all about each one, their backgrounds, how they came to arrive at the sanctuary, their personalities, and more!

The stroll through the forest with the elephants was as intriguing as it was breathtaking, and I felt I learned quite a lot about their behavior on the outing.

We then headed back to enjoy a delicious Thai lunch complete with fresh fruit while chatting about everything we just saw. It was such a fun time, while learning about the importance of these ethical environments, and of course, falling even more in love with these gentle creatures.

3. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary Canopy Walkway Tour

elephant hotel tour

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Departure Time: 9:00, 9:30 PM, 2:00, 2:30 PM
  • Includes:  Umbrellas, Raincoats, Mosquito Spray, Signature Iced Soda & Unlimited Snack Bar, Free PES souvenir, Bottled water

This next tour takes you right into the heart of Thailand’s thick, green jungles for the chance to connect with some of the most majestic animals on earth.

The experience is led by professional guides and conservationists who know just about everything there is to know about the sanctuary and surrounding environment.

The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary Canopy Walkway Tour  celebrates the intelligence of elephants while promoting their well-being and protection.

I, like probably most people, have seen elephants before at zoos and settings where they’re more controlled.

However, I’d never had the chance to see them roam freely in a forest sanctuary, where I was able to see them in their element: foraging, bathing, eating, and interacting with each other, naturally.

I naively didn’t know much about the challenges elephants have to deal with, as well as responsible tourism, but I’m so grateful I now have a better idea.

Everything about this tour was convenient, from the hotel pickup and drop-off to the included umbrellas, raincoats, mosquito spray, and unlimited snacks and soft drinks.

They even offered us free PES souvenirs, which was the perfect addition to an already amazing tour. In addition, there are a ton of different start times available so you can choose which works best into your itinerary!

The sweet elephants are so beautiful and I was happy to be able to help feed them while our guide told us some interesting facts, including how they’re the largest land mammal on the planet!

The park history itself was also fascinating, and we got to watch a short documentary at the beginning of the tour that helped us understand even more about elephants. Overall, this was a great day that I’d recommend to anyone, of any age or interest.

4. Full-Day Phuket Elephant Sanctuary Tour with Lunch and Dinner

elephant hotel tour

  • Duration: 7.5 hours
  • Includes:  Boots, socks, umbrellas, raincoats, mosquito spray, snacks, coffee, fruits, juices & filtered Water, air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, free PES T-Shirt, vegetarian Thai lunch & dinner

This is by far, the most comprehensive, “full-fledged” elephant sanctuary tour of its kind in Phuket. You’ll get to learn all about elephants, conservation efforts, the sanctuary, and enjoy a delicious lunch  and  dinner.

The Full-Day Phuket Elephant Sanctuary Tour with Lunch and Dinner  is fun for anyone who’d like to get a better idea of how important Thailand’s natural environment and conservation efforts are to its wildlife.

I will say, be prepared to have your heartstrings tugged at, as part of learning is also watching the informative video at the beginning about what so many elephants go through on planet Earth.

These are such incredibly sweet, gentle animals, and I got a glimpse into how intelligent and noble they are, watching them roam freely around the stunning sanctuary grounds.

Our guide did a fantastic job, teaching us all about these special creatures, through the clear passion and love she has for them. My personal favorite part of the day was fixing the food for the elephants and hand-feeding them right up close!

I learned about how the sanctuary takes care of injured and mistreated elephants, which made me feel a bit bittersweet.

I also enjoyed walking up on the elevated walkways throughout the forest canopy and the walk through the trees, which offered incredible views!

Throughout the day, we enjoyed complimentary soft drinks, but we were even served a delicious lunch and dinner. Both were more traditionally Thai dishes, though I’m a huge fan of the local cuisine and was happy to revel in the diverse flavors in such a beautiful location.

I’d recommend this tour to families, solo travelers, couples, and anyone who has a passion for animals.

5. An Afternoon with the Elephants at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

elephant hotel tour

  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 1:30 PM
  • Includes:  Dinner

How do you feel about going on a tour that National Geographic, Lonely Planet, and The Guardian have all endorsed?

Well, you can now with An Afternoon with the Elephants at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary ! Covering over 30 acres of tropical rainforest, we got the chance to see firsthand how these old and injured elephants lived happily with top-notch treatment from the staff.

This is one of the tours that only has one start time and it’s at 1:30 pm, so it’s perfect if you have plans in the morning or at night and want something to fill your afternoon with.

Of course, this isn’t a “filler” tour where you’re just checking off boxes – rather, it’s an educational, immersive experience that will likely make you see elephants differently.

This, like most others on this guide, do include a convenient hotel pickup so you don’t have to deal with booking separate transportation.

The guides did a fantastic job at letting us be “a part” of the experience by feeding the elephants and learning all about them, without intruding upon them or putting them into potentially stressful situations.

After all, this sanctuary is there to keep the animals happy and healthy while supporting their mission of compassionate and ethical elephant tourism. Oh, and do yourself a favor and make sure you visit the little cafe in the back, which is delicious!

After we learned all about the gentle giants, we took a break to enjoy a delicious buffet dinner filled with all kinds of traditional Thai dishes – most of which, I’d never had before.

It seems crazy to say, but it was actually the best dinner I’d had that week, and I’d already visited a lot of yummy restaurants. If you’re looking for a different activity or simply a good alternative to going to dinner at a traditional restaurant, this is the top option!

Watch: Elephants casually walking through a hotel lobby… because Africa.

Elephants mfuwe-lodge-south-luangwa-national-park-zambia

It’s not everyday that you see a wild elephant standing next to you at the reception of a hotel.

But in the Mfuwe Lodge in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, the sight of one or even ten elephants strolling around the lobby is a regular occurrence.

Unwittingly built on the elephant’s traditional path in 1998, the Mfuwe Lodge stands directly en-route to this elephant herd’s favourite food – wild mangoes.

Andy Hogg, 44, Director at the Bushcamp Company that runs the Mfuwe Lodge, has lived in the South Luangwa national park since 1982.

But in his 26 years of dealing with wild animals in the Zambian national park, Andy has never seen such intimate interaction between man and beast.

“This is the only place in the world where elephants freely get so close to humans,” says the 44-year-old.

Every year, between late October and mid December the elephants arrive at Mfuwe Lodge in the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.

The whole family of elephants comes to eat the wild mango (Cordyla africana) fruits which fall from a tree just beyond the open plan lobby.

An intrepid matriarch called Wonky Tusk, (named for her backward-facing tusk) was responsible for teaching her family to seek out the delicious fruits over a decade ago.

Undeterred by the fact that the safari lodge is in their path, the elephants carefully traverse the vaulted thatched reception, carefully negotiating the tiled steps – why walk around when you can take a short cut through the lobby?

The elephants have the run of the place — Wonky Tusk’s offspring, Lord Wellington, was born in the lodge grounds in 2009, and at just two days old took his first steps in the lodge. He’s not shy either and has been known to lift a pen or two from the reception desk with his trunk!

“The elephants start coming through base camp in late November of each year to eat the ripe mangoes from our trees. They travel through the lodge for about four to six weeks, usually returning every day or so to eat the mangoes.” Andy goes on to say ”this is the only place in the world where elephants freely get so close to humans.” Lodge manager Ian Salisbury says ”there’s great excitement when the elephants walk though, but we try to keep everyone calm, the elephants are usually very relaxed and pay little attention to people, so much so they have been known to fall asleep here!”

Elephants of Sri Lanka - 15 Days

My teenage granddaughter and I choose the Stelaran Holidays 13 Day Elephant Tour based on reviews and the time that would be spent with or near Elephants. Elli has loved Elephants since she was small and this was her "Dream Trip". We were NOT disappointed! The tour is ALL it says it is and SO much more. The island of Sri Lanka is magical! This country is very diverse in heritage, culture, geography, plant and animal life ... each day was an exciting new adventure! The people of Sri Lanka are so kind and hospitable, they made our trip personal. Our guide, Chandonna was extremely knowledgeable about everything and went above and beyond to make sure our experience was good. We were on a private tour with Chandonna, he always made sure we felt safe. The accommodations were very good with the exception of one hotel, but two other hotels were exceptional! We highly recommended this Tour!

Chiang Mai & Elephant Conservation 3D/2N Tour

Chiang Mai & Elephant Conservation 3D/2N

Our guide was amazing on Sunday. She was fluent in English but we also had a great time learning Thai with her while exploring the city. She was fun and engaging. Breakfast was ridiculously epic. The highlight for me was the chat with the monk for over an hour. The elephant sanctuary day had a rough start as when we went to the lobby a different bus came to get us then what we were told for a completely different sanctuary. Naturally we were confused when a different sanctuary was saying we should go with them. We were told Elephant Nature Park and Elephant Jungle Sanctuary was there instead. We went ahead and got in unsure if we were going to the right place. One of our members was too ill to attend the next day for the City tour because he had been soaked from Songkran the entire way to the sanctuary and back. We also got soaked the night before while exploring Chiang Mai. He broke out in a rash all over and had a fever. I personally didn’t have an issue with it, except I was unprepared and had no way to secure my belongings in waterproof bags. My jacket was ruined and stained and electronics damaged. Bamba failed to tell us about this monumental holiday in the city. We couldn’t even get dinner without getting drenched. Again - I would have been all for it if I had come prepared. We did try to explain and come to a solution with Bamba but they refused to offer any type of compensation for his missed City Tour on Sunday. They failed to take responsibility for this piece. His inability to attend was a direct result of their negligence To warn us about Songkran which is a huge city wise festival and should have been knowledge a tour company could provide to foreigners. He would have brought waterproof materials as he has health issues that require protection from situations like this. The elephant sanctuary ended up being a great day but for foreigners expecting a certain pickup. To have someone else show up can be alarming and scary. We did try to contact Bamba over the weekend as well at their designated WhatsApp number and no one even bothered to reply. Being in a foreign country can be unnerving enough and when the tour company fails to respond, it’s so disappointing. We should have just booked everything ourselves as we were left high and dry and no communication all weekend. Friday when we checked in no one even reached out or made an effort to ensure we arrived safely. The hotel they booked us at was also less than acceptable. My room had mold in the bathroom. The hallways were smelly and all the carpets were dirty - walls were not clean. We did mentioned this to them after the tour but they again said we should have told them - but without any response from Them all weekend how was this possible?? We did try. The least you can do is refund our friends UNUSED city tour on Sunday due to your complete negligence to warn us about city conditions. Your lack of communication resulted in his inability to attend. He didn’t “decide not to go” as you stated. He was literally in the bathroom sick and couldn’t leave the hotel. Please take responsibility and do the right thing here.

Reviews of elephant tours.

Our chief complaint is regarding the 1st hotel we stayed at Palm Garden Village in Anuradhapura. The hotel was substandard in many ways. We had no water for several hours. The pool was unusable. The staff appeared to be untrained & the hotel is still under construction. TV & WiFi did not work as well. The only saving grace was that are 2 meals there were good. The hotel seemed like a 2 star one compared to all our other hotels, which were excellent. Our guide was very nice & very helpful. A couple stops on our tour were clearly sales stops. The first was a stop at a woodworking store on day 2. There was a small demo & then we were escorted through the store to look at merchandise. Our stop at a spice venue on day 3 was far worse as the so-called guide clearly was trying to sell us holistic health products derived from plants. We were only interested in seeing cooking spices in their natural state. We thought Sri Lanka was great, although some of the venues (Sigiriya, Yala National Park) were overpriced for tourists.
We had a fantastic time with the elephants, helping to take care of them and make chapati for them. The programme is well organised, and the staff were lovely. The 5am tuk tuk ride to work was fun, even with the crazy traffic in India!! The host family we stayed with were very welcoming and the meals were lovely. The sightseeing tours in the tuk tuk in the afternoon were very informative and we had plenty of time to visit the forts and take photos. Elaine

Cage The Elephant lead singer Matthew Shultz sings to the rafters onstage.

Cage The Elephant is coming out of their cage.

From June through September, the alt-rockers are hitting the road for their ‘Neon Pill Tour’ with special guests Young The Giant and Bakar on select dates in support of their upcoming sixth studio album that shares a name with the tour.

Along the way, the “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” sextet will swing into Saratoga Springs on Aug. 18, Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on Aug. 24, Madison Square Garden on Sept. 5 and Buffalo’s Artpark Mainstage Theater on Sept. 7.

The album and 45-concert tour represent a new chapter for the group; “Neon Pill” was written following a series of traumatic events including the death of lead singer Matthew Shultz’s father.

“With this album, having gone through so much, life had almost forced us into becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves,” Shultz said in a statement.

“We weren’t reaching for much outside of the pure experience of self expression, and simultaneously not necessarily settling either. We just found a uniqueness in simply existing.”

For fans that can’t wait to see what Shultz and co. have up their sleeve for this nationwide run, tickets can be picked up as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, March 8, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Cage The Elephant 2024 festival appearances

On top of the tour, Cage The Elephant will lend their talents to a trio of multi-day fests.

To find the one that’s right for you, we’ve got all the dates, venues and headliners for each listed here:

Cage The Elephant set list

In April 2022, Cage The Elephant headlined at The Music Hall of Williamsburg.

While it’s certainly likely they’ll cram quite a bit of “Neon Pill” into the upcoming tour, here’s a look at what they performed live roughly two years ago, courtesy of Set List FM .

“01.) “Broken Boy” 02.) “Cry Baby” 03.) “Spiderhead” 04.) “Too Late to Say Goodbye” 05.) “Cold Cold Cold” 06.) “Portuguese Knife Fight” 07.) “Ready to Let Go” 08.) “Social Cues” 09.) “Tokyo Smoke” 10.) “Mess Around” 11.) “Trouble” 12.) “Skin and Bones” 13.) “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” 14.) “Telescope” 15.) “House of Glass” 16.) “Come a Little Closer” 17.) “Shake Me Down” 18.) “Cigarette Daydreams” 19.) “Teeth”

Cage The Elephant new music

“Neon Pill” is set for release on May 17.

In tandem with the tour announcement, Cage The Elephant dropped their second single “Out Loud.” To kick things off, mournful, twinkling piano plays under Shultz’s husky vocals as the band veers into earnest ballad territory. It’s a nice change of pace for the typically offbeat group.

The lead single, “Neon Pill,” is more in step with CTE’s sound. A hooky singalong chorus wedded to jangly guitar fits squarely into the Kentuckians’ catalog.

If you’d like to check out the new tracks, you can find both “Neon Pill” songs here .

Cage The Elephant special guests

On the road, Cage The Elephant will share the stage with a pair of opening acts.

To make sure you’re the most informed fan in your section, here are their most streamed songs on Spotify.

Bakar: “Hell N Back”

Cage the Elephant Make Sense of Tragedy on Gentle ‘Out Loud’

By Kory Grow

Cage the Elephant ‘s latest single, “Out Loud,” is the sound of a band growing up. The group wrote the tune after the death of the father of brothers Matthew Shultz (vocals) and Brad Shultz (guitar) and the song, an elegiac piano ballad, finds them making sense of their regrets. “Man, I really messed up now,” Matthew croons. “Too afraid to say it out loud.” The tune makes for a preamble of sorts for the group’s upcoming sixth album, Neon Pill — due out May 17 — which was written following the death of the Shultz brothers’ father and those of other friends.

Producer John Hill, who helmed the Kentucky sextet’s last album, 2019’s Social Cues , oversaw the sessions for Neon Pill , which took place in El Paso, Texas, New York City, Nashville, and Los Angeles. The Shultzes lost their father nine months into the pandemic and soon found themselves grieving the deaths of other friends, leading to Matthew experiencing depression and a mental breakdown. He sought treatment and came out of the hospital with a new sense of himself.

How guest reviews work.

Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system only for properties in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains), meaning that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.

An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).

We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Guidelines and standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Cage the Elephant announces new record and summer 2024 North American tour

  • Updated: Feb. 29, 2024, 9:14 a.m. |
  • Published: Feb. 29, 2024, 9:14 a.m.

Cage the Elephant

Cage the Elephant will kick off a 45-date summer 2024 tour in June that includes two stops in Pa. - Aug. 29 at The Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown, and Sept. 6 at TD Pavilion at the Mann in Philadelphia. Cage the Elephant

Cage the Elephant rock band announced today that it will release a new album, “Neon Pill,” in May and it will launch a 2024 North American tour that includes two stops in Pa.

The 45-date tour starts June 20 and includes two concerts in Pennsylvania - Aug. 29 at The Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown , and Sept. 6 at TD Pavilion at the Mann in Philadelphia.

Both shows are with support from Young the Giant.

Ticket presales start on March 5. Tickets for the general public go on sale on Friday, March 8.

The band also will perform on the first day of the 2024 Oceans Calling Festival in Ocean City, Maryland. They will perform Sept. 27 at the festival, headlined that day by Blink-182.

The Grammy Award-winning rock band said “Neon Pill,” its sixth studio album, will be released on May 17 on RCA Records.

“The new album finds the Kentucky-bred six piece — brothers Matthew Shultz [vocals] and Brad Shultz [guitar], Daniel Tichenor [bass], Jared Champion [drums], Nick Bockrath [lead guitar], and Matthan Minster [guitar, keys, backing vocals] — forging new musical ground, while maintaining their uncompromising creativity and wildly cathartic performances.”

Matthew Shultz said in a news release, “To me, ‘Neon Pill’ is the first record where we were consistently uninfluenced, and I mean that in a positive way.

“Everything is undoubtedly expressed through having settled into finding our own voice. We’ve always drawn inspiration from artists we love, and at times we’ve even emulated some of them to a certain degree.

“With this album, having gone through so much, life had almost forced us into becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves. We weren’t reaching for much outside of the pure experience of self expression, and simultaneously not necessarily settling either. We just found a uniqueness in simply existing.”

The band also released the a single from the album called “Out Loud.”

The Grammy award-winning rock band announced a new album and tour on Thursday. They'll be at The Pavilion at Star Lake on Aug. 29 with Young the Giant and Bakar.

The tour will make 45 stops in North America, kicking off in West Valley City, Utah, on June 20 and wrapping up on Sept. 18 in Denver, Colorado.

The band's sixth studio album "Neon Pill" will be released on May 17.

"To me, Neon Pill is the first record where we were consistently uninfluenced, and I mean that in a positive way," singer Matthew Shultz said in a news release from Live Nation. "Everything is undoubtedly expressed through having settled into finding our own voice. We've always drawn inspiration from artists we love, and at times we've even emulated some of them to a certain degree. With this album, having gone through so much, life had almost forced us into becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves. We weren't reaching for much outside of the pure experience of self expression, and simultaneously not necessarily settling either. We just found a uniqueness in simply existing."

Cage the Elephant's two previous albums, "Tell Me I'm Pretty" and "Social Clues" won consecutive best rock album at the Grammy Awards.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 8 at 10 a.m., with presales leading up to that date.

Madeline is a digital web producer for KDKA. She has worked for the station since 2019.

Traveler Reviews

I cant recommend this tour highly enough. I asked a friend to recommend one thing to do with limited time in Moscow and he said, check out the metro. I did one better, and went on this individual tour yesterday with my very well informed guide, Alina. She took me to a number of stations and explained the history, politics and meanings behind the different sculpures and artworks in a way that made the whole experience far more meaningful than getting on and off the metro without guidance would have done. I had a really fantastic time and was thoroughly impressed. To top it all off, we had lunch and Alina suggested some great things for me to do, even whatsapping me maps, suggestions, and internet links. Today she followed up by messaging me to ask how my day was going and if I had any questions about the city, or recommendations for places to eat, etc. A great tour, a lovely guide and a fantastic experience. I couldnt recommend this tour, or Alina, any more highly. Fantastic!

Dear Friends,

My son and myself visited Moscow for a holiday in April 2018. And we had selected this fantastic tour. Our Guide Mrs. Julia came sharp at 10.00 AM even though she was not feeling well and had sore throat. Thereafter she took us to many Metro stations. Though I had already visited Moscow last year and seen all these stations, she gave phenomenal historic background and many interesting facts. She was almost fluent in English and and a good knowledge of Russian Culture, food and many other things. Overall we enjoyed thoroughly and I will highly recommend this tour with Julia if possible. Truly amazing person. And even more amazing tour.

Our Tour booked for 26 December 2017 was absolutely amazing. Our guide Julia picked us up from our Hotel in St Peterburg on time in a luxury minivan. Thanks to Julia we were able to see most of the tourist attractions that day. She went out of her way for us to make our day special. She had a vast knowledge of all the places that we visited. Lunch was special in a typical Russian restaurant with food from the region. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Picked up in the hotel lobby by our guide, Lylie, who then walked us to the closest Metro. She walked/trained us to 13 different stations and then explained the history of the metro and the significance of the decor in each station. We had plenty of time to photo, view the decor, watch and ride the trains and observe the people coming and going with their daily affairs. The art work/mosaics/sculptures/stained glass/ marble all had a role to play in presenting the history of communist Russia. The Russian metro well deserves the title of the most interesting and outstanding metro in the world. Lylie then took us to lunch, advised us on menu choices and their significance in the Russian culture and was very happy answering our questions on how the younger generation is responding to the new Russia. We had an outstanding guide, a fantastic experience and would highly recommend this tour over and above other tours which merely include a visit to a small number of stations. Lesley and David - Sydney

Great guide! She explained everything and took me to all the important stations. She knew her stuff! Worth it!

Our guide ,Dacha, was charming and very informative. We took the 2 hour tour and saw what Dacha thought were the most beautiful and interesting metro stations. The Metro is certainly worthy of its museum status and we were glad to have some of the designs and features explained to us.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
