Minister Patricia De Lille: Launch of Africa Travel Indaba

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Fish Mahlalela; Premier of KwaZulu Natal Province, Ms Nomusa Dube-Ncube Honourable MEC for Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs, Siboniso Duma  Mayor of eThekwini, Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda  Chairperson of the Board of SA Tourism; Thozamile Botha CEO of the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Industry leaders Valued members of the media Ladies and Gentlemen

Good morning

It gives me such great pleasure to be here in Durban today, to launch Africa’s Travel Indaba. I must tell you just how excited I am that this is one of my first major assignments as the newly appointed Minister of Tourism.

I’m particularly thrilled because of the value that Africa’s Travel Indaba continues to deliver - not only for South Africa but for the rest of the African continent.

Africa’s Travel Indaba plays a critical role in the advancement of tourism and in the country’s economic development.

Economic Impact of Tourism and Indaba

We are excited to be back in Durban, the home of Africa’s Travel Indaba. The show continues to be a critical platform for the continent, contributing to Africa’s economic growth.

Last year, the show drew over 5500 delegates to Durban, contributing a total of R102.6 million to the City’s GDP.

Earlier this year, we hosted a successful Meetings Africa in Johannesburg.

We brought together 352 exhibitors from 22 African countries and over 250 quality buyers from all over the world to experience the best business events products and services that the continent has to offer.

We are enthused by the success of Meetings Africa, and we go into Africa’s Travel Indaba with these successes fueling us.

Repositioning Africa’s Travel Indaba

A lot changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we felt it necessary and important to reposition Africa’s Travel Indaba to ensure it remains relevant in the current environment.

This year, we are launching Indaba under the positioning “Shaping Africa’s tomorrow, through connection today”.

This positioning speaks to the essence of Africa’s Travel Indaba, bringing the world to Africa in an effort to positively influence the continent’s trajectory. Later on today you will get a sneak preview of the new look Indaba.

South Africa’s tourism performance

Over the last two years, all of our efforts as a sector have been focused on ensuring the highest levels of recovery, following the pandemic.

We are all working towards seeing our various economies return to the pre-COVID 19 performance levels and in fact exceeding these.

Through collaboration and partnerships, we have made great strides in the recovery.

This is evidenced through the tourism performance numbers over the last year.

During the period January – December 2022, South Africa welcomed 5.7 million tourists. This is a sharp increase of 152% when compared to the same period in the previous year.

It is encouraging that arrivals from other African countries continues to be our most substantial source of arrivals, with just over 4 million arrivals during this period.

Africa’s Travel Indaba seeks to ensure that we, as the African continent, grow together collectively.

The South African Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan

Our tourism sector has a major role to play in the South African Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan which is aimed at stimulating equitable and inclusive growth.

Africa’s Travel Indaba is one of the various strategic platforms in our powerful arsenal of tools that we can use to attain the goals of the South African Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan

We know our sector was hardest-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and in fact at the time pandemic reached our shores, the South African economy had experienced two consecutive quarters of a recession so our sector was already reeling from this.

Many businesses in this sector folded and many people lost their jobs and now it is up to each and every one of us in this room to play our part to re-ignite the African economy.  We win when we all win.

Africa’s Travel Indaba presents us with an opportunity to continue with the efforts we started last year when the industry met at this platform in person for the first time post the COVID-19 pandemic.

We committed to building our African tourism sector and reshaping our economy. No doubt over the past year we have done so in our various engagements.

Now is the time for us to gather once again to do business and put into action our plans.

This is my third week as a Minister of Tourism and I have already engaged the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on the issue of visas together with SA Tourism and the SA Tourism Business Council.

Minister Motsoaledi shared with us the contribution of Home Affairs to Tourism and I will continue to engaging the Minister and stakeholders.

I am committed to working with stakeholders to refuce barriers that threaten our growth.

Tourism Sector Recovery plan

We are therefore, steaming ahead with the implementation of our Tourism Sector Recovery Plan approved by Cabinet in March 2021.

The Plan outlines a set of interventions to ignite the recovery anchored in three strategic themes: protecting and rejuvenating supply, re-igniting demand and strengthening enabling capability for long-term sustainability.

We are here to drive transformation and support key players to transform and prosper.

We are here to help SMMEs to grow and compete globally.

We know that for us to return to Pre-pandemic performance levels we must:

  • Make sure we focus on all our target markets
  • Recover airlift
  • Collaborate as the public and private sector
  • And very importantly, make sure that Africa in its totality grows and this is why Indaba is proudly Pan African

In this spirit, Africa’s Travel Indaba has an objective to create market access for our vast array of African leisure tourism products.

As part of our commitment to the success of the tourism industry, we continue to support SMMEs to attend this proudly Pan African trade show as well as other global tourism trade shows that South African Tourism participates in, in various parts of the world.

We continue to bring our Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) alongside us to showcase their wares abroad.

This is part of our efforts to provide market access to upcoming tourism businesses, aid the sector’s recovery, and ensure inclusion in the industry.

I am pleased to say that through the work the Department of Tourism is doing, we are going to have 120 SMMEs participating at this year’s Africa’s Travel Indaba at the Hidden Gems pavilion.

Through all our marketing efforts we continue promoting villages, small towns and dorpies to ensure that we drive an inclusive tourism sector recovery.

Airlift/Air Access

Making trade and travel seamless across our continent and the various other markets is an absolutely crucial component of economic growth.

We need to have enough airlift – to meet both domestic, regional and international demand.

Encouragingly, Airlift to and from South Africa has seen continuous recovery.

Last year we welcomed numerous direct flights from our key source markets into various parts of our country, such as the direct United Airlines flight from Cape Town to Newark in the United States of America.

Tomorrow morning, Air China's Flight 867 from Beijing-Shenzhen-Johannesburg is set to arrive at OR Tambo.

This flight marks a significant milestone as the first flight for group tours since the pandemic started in 2020, which is of great importance to Chinese arrivals to South Africa. China is the most promising source market for South Africa.

Just before the pandemic, South Africa received nearly 100,000 visitors from China. It is possible to push the number to 1,000,000 by 2030.

If we reach this target, more than R100billion in Chinese tourism spend could be generated over a five year period and this could reduce unemployment significantly.

The impact on the economy of South Africa will be positive and sustainable.

For this reason, I will be working hard with our key stakeholders to remove key barriers such as airlift, visa and safety.

Research has also shown great potential for travel to Africa by tourists from BRICS countries.

Later this year, we are also expecting the LATAM flight from Brazil to OR Tambo International Airport which will also present a boost to the tourism sector and travel of Brazilian tourists to South Africa.

The LATAM Airlines Group plans to re-launch a non-stop flight between São Paulo International Airport, Brazil, and OR Tambo International Airport, in July or August 2023.

The route will resume after more than three years, following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the new route, customers will be able to travel between Johannesburg and Brazil in 9 hours on one of the three direct weekly flights to be carried out on Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which accommodates 300 passengers.

In this regard, South Africa can therefore be gateway to travel for Africa for visitors from BRICS countries.

I will also convene a SADC Ministerial Dialogue at the Travel Indaba in Durban in May 2023.

We will use this opportunity to showcase South Africa’s tourism offering and how SADC countries can work together.

Last year, we also saw our national carrier, South African Airways, expand to various markets across the African continent. This is a major success for our country.

These flights undoubtedly contribute to boosting our attractiveness and will contribute to seeing us return to pre-COVID-19 performance levels and beyond.

I am very thrilled to see that there is indeed collaboration with our airline stakeholders as this is a major part of tourism recovery and beyond.

I would like to conclude by inviting all the buyers from across the world to South Africa to travel, explore and visit the Africa Travel Indaba in May this year.

I assure you that South Africa is ready to host you and that Africa is open for business and ready to showcase its diverse range of products and tourism experiences.

We look forward to welcoming all delegates to Africa’s Travel Indaba and to creating lasting connections which will propel the continent to even greater heights.

Thank you to everyone in the industry for your continuous work and collaboration in this regard. Let us work harder to exceed all expectations and grow tourism together.  I thank you and God Bless.

"Indaba plays an enormous role in advancing the city’s tourism and economic development. This platform also allows us to showcase the latest tourism developments to international delegates including buyers. We are looking forward to showcasing our newly launched Nelson Mandela MSC Cruise terminal in a bid to attract more vessels to dock in the city and partnerships," said eThekwini Mayor, Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda.

"We are excited to welcome Africa’s Travel Indaba back to the Durban ICC in May 2024. The trade show is a celebration of the vibrant tapestry of cultures, experiences and opportunities that our African continent offers. At the Durban ICC, we are honoured to host this gathering of operators, agents, and change-makers in the travel industry. Together, let’s explore new horizons, forge meaningful connections, and inspire a future where Africa's beauty and diversity shine on the global stage!" Lindiwe Rakharebe, Durban ICC CEO.

Meetings Africa and Africa’s Travel Indaba Trade Shows to return in 2022

A A fter the cancellation of two signature global trade shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic, South African Tourism is excited to once again host both Meetings Africa and Africa’s Travel Indaba.

The destination marketing organisation has today confirmed that the flagship business events and leisure trade shows will return next year, with both platforms being hosted as physical events with limited virtual components.

The last Meetings Africa was hosted in February 2020, just before the coronavirus outbreak, when it celebrated its 15 th year anniversary.

Africa’s Travel Indaba did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to global restrictions on movement and immigration regulations necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meetings Africa will take place from 28 th February 2022 to 2 nd March 2022 at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Johannesburg, while Africa’s Travel Indaba will be hosted from 2 nd to 5 th May 2022 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban. Both events will have virtual participation capabilities, albeit to a limited extent.

As South African Tourism charges forward with its commitment to the recovery of the tourism sector, the return of these shows will promote and market the country’s business events hosting capability and showcase destination South Africa’s leisure tourism products and experiences. The hosting of these events will contribute to the country’s economy, as delegates from various parts of the world will attend these trade shows.

Over the recent past, South Africa has recorded a significant reduction in the number of new COVID-19 infections. The vaccination program is well under way as part of the South African government’s efforts to contain the spread of the virus. The country aims to have 70% of its adult population fully vaccinated by the end of 2021.

During his address to the nation on 30th September 2021, His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa moved South Africa to adjusted alert level 1, reduced the hours of curfew and increased the number of people permitted for gatherings up to 750 people for indoor and 2 000 people for outdoor gatherings providing a major boost for both for leisure travel as well as for the Business Events industry.

“We are very pleased to bring Meetings Africa and Africa’s Travel Indaba back. The need for physical events and face-to-face encounters is evident in both the industry and the public. The experiences over the last months have shown that on-location events can take place safely and successfully, and demonstrate how important they are for dialogue and exchange. We recently hosted Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit, a hybrid format which was a well-executed and attended bringing the tourism sector together for a common purpose of reigniting the tourism sector” said Sthembiso Dlamini, Acting CEO of South African Tourism.

While Africa’s Travel and Tourism Summit was not a replacement for Meetings Africa and Africa’s Travel Indaba, it did provide a platform to showcase the African continent’s leisure tourism offerings and business event capabilities.

“Hosting Meetings Africa and Africa’s Travel Indaba will certainly show our exhibitors, buyers, and the world, that South Africa is open for business and that the South African tourism sector has world-class COVID-19 safety protocols in place to deliver on memorable experiences and events. South Africa is ready and well prepared to welcome delegates from across the world,” Dlamini concluded.

Registration details for delegate participation for these trade shows will be announced soon.

Africa Travel Indaba Is All The Confirmation You Need That South Africa Is Open And Ready For Visitors

International travel is back and the country of South Africa is open, thriving, and ready for visitors.

Naivasha Thomas • Oct 6, 2022

south africa travel indaba

International travel is back and the country of South Africa is open, thriving, and ready for visitors. After two years of lockdown and limitations due to a global pandemic, tourism is finally seeing a boom. A resilient country, the people have not only endured setbacks to due COVID but have grappled with the hardships of travel restrictions , school shutdowns, and a recent flood in the KwaZulu-Natal that took many lives while causing major infrastructural damage.

Tourism in South Africa was welcomed back with the commencement of Africa Travel Indaba , which took place on May 2-5, 2022. Indaba means “a meeting to discuss serious topics” in the Bantu people’s language of southern Africa. The trade show experience was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, in the warm and sunny city of Durban . A collaborative effort amongst premier leaders in tourism across the continent, the energy inside of the conference is the pulse of Africa’s travel industry.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization , the continent welcomed some 18.5-million foreign travelers in 2021, up from 16.2-million in 2020. This single trade show serves as a connecting force between the outside world and the Motherland.

TRAVEL INDABA

There is a pulse that carries the rhythm of movement throughout Africa . A syncopated pace shifting the history of sound like an old folksong. This song is what Africa’s Travel Indaba embodies as a collective force. A tourism conference hosting buyers and travel industry professionals from all over Africa, the conference operates at the intersection of domestic, regional, and international travel. The metronome that keeps a steady tempo towards the heart of tourism in the Motherland— a passion to see more sites, ask more questions, and learn more about life.

“When you travel to a place you understand it better, you understand the people.”

During a panel discussion around the pandemic and growth of tourism, South African Tourism’s Acting CEO, Themba Kumalo, described the fundamental impact of global travel .

“A lot of the challenges we face with understanding one another, as peoples across the world, is the that we visit one another. That is when all of the issues that we have with one another start to go away. When you are an international host for tourist from around the world, you better understand your guest.”

Kumalo spoke towards hardships within the continent, recognizing crisis with an optimistic outlook. “Yes, some businesses were lost, but new businesses were born. It was an opportunity to refresh the opportunity that we put out into the world. I believe that we are in better shape now than we were before we went into lockdown and I believe the bounce back is well on the way.”

FREE TO MOVE ABOUT THE CABIN

Even though the pandemic has not gone away, the restraints on travel have gradually been lifting. The flexibility to work from home has made a major impact on tourism as many Americans, who are used to only getting one week off for vacation time a year, are now able to travel longer and work remotely. Many companies, including Blavity and AirBnB , have made these work-from-home company changes permanent, giving their employees freedom to move beyond their cubicles, about the cabin, and into the open world.

In South Africa, lockdown not only interfered with travel but several aspects of leisure and business. For example, the country recently lifted its 20-month ban on alcohol , which prohibited transporting, consuming, and all sales of alcoholic beverages. On average, tourism employs over 24 million people in the county and the sudden decline in international travel had a calamitous impact.

“Everyone is an important part of this process, everyone from the man selling drinks on the beach to the people cleaning hotel rooms, we are all part of tourism,” says Kumalo.

PROTECTING YOU, PROTECTING US

COVID safety was the top priority for every business and establishment throughout South Africa. Beyond on-site testing in most major establishments, many high-trafficked areas offered vaccination tents. Though the Indaba convention center was only at 50% capacity , masks were required indoors and on all shuttles. Local businesses delegated employees to earnestly spray hands upon entry and if there was not an employee, there was a foot dispenser and someone standing nearby with a side eye exchange.

Upon arrival to South Africa, travelers had to provide proof of vaccination through the airline portal as well as at the check-in gate. Airport announcements cycled protocols on repeat, reminding travelers of South Africa’s mission to provide COVID safety with a clear and promising tag line; “Protecting you, protecting us.”

Though most of the rural population of South Africa is not fully vaccinated , COVID safety measures have been adopted by all of those who actively participate in tourism. Prior to leaving, American news continued to perpetuate South Africa as an outbreak mega center, but that was far from true. We were on high alert even though everyone from the local drivers to the elders who hosted us for an afternoon chat at the top of Lebombo Mountains, were masked up to their eyelashes. Formalities were in place to simply keep people working and the economy moving. Overall, safety measures felt like they were consciously enforced, especially in comparison to America’s shift in travel regulation and restrictions.

AFRICA IS THRIVING

Travel is hard on the body, there is no getting around it. Thankfully airlines have started to incorporate new methods to help passengers adjust their circadian rhythm s to local time zones in an effort to help to avoid jet lag. These simple additions of dimming lights, tinted windows, and the incorporation of interactive relaxation methods helped to make our 16-hour flight from Johannesburg to Newark , feel more like an 8-hour flight. More airlines are making a conscious effort to use this era in aviation history to upgrade planes and make new routes that align with travel and business needs.

Whether you’re looking for a place to work remotely or yearning for a gentle introduction into the wonders of the motherland, South Africa is a destination with much to offer . Johannesburg serves a buzzing scene of hip hotels, delicious hot spots , and music festivals. The KwaZulu-Natal, better know as KZN, provides everything from luxurious safari, apartheid history tours, and timeless cultural experiences . For runners, Durban is the home of the “Golden Mile” a 6km stretch along the Indian Ocean. If you arrive early enough to greet the sun, the colors are the most luminescent golden hues that paint the beach and anything along its path. Those looking for water adventure can find many spots around the southern coast of the country with the ultimate wonder in the Mother City of Cape Town . This captivating destination has almost everything to offer from the finest foods to museums and guided tours that embrace sovereignty and complicated history.

As a Black American still processing many of the domestic events that took place in 2020, visiting South Africa felt like a familiar song of survival. Africa is thriving and will continue to carry the heartbeat of resilience because that is the way of the people, it is the heart pumping blood with no permission or interference. To be seen in a community of people so close to their oppression, people still working towards the idea of opportunity was vindicating. It opened my eyes to the need for tourism during such a time as now. A time where we are all connected through technology, all united through creativity and collectively writing the lyrics to how to stay resilient during this moment in history.

Why Is the Indaba Important for Tourism in South Africa?

By Michael Ferguson

The Indaba is one of the most significant events in South Africa’s tourism industry. This annual trade show attracts thousands of exhibitors and buyers from all over the world.

It’s a platform where tourism businesses can showcase their products and services, establish new partnerships, and exchange ideas. But why exactly is the Indaba important for South Africa’s tourism? Let’s discuss.

Boosting Tourism

The Indaba provides a unique opportunity for South African tourism businesses to promote themselves on a global stage. Through networking opportunities and face-to-face interactions, they can attract more international visitors to the country. This, in turn, boosts the economy by increasing revenue from tourism-related activities such as accommodation, food and beverage, transportation, and entertainment.

Cultural Exchange

South Africa is a melting pot of cultures with diverse traditions, languages and customs. The Indaba is an excellent platform for showcasing this cultural diversity to visitors from around the world. This helps to create awareness about South Africa’s rich heritage and encourages tourists to explore more of what the country has to offer beyond its natural beauty.

Enhancing Industry Standards

The Indaba not only promotes existing businesses but also provides an opportunity for new entrepreneurs to enter the market. By attending seminars, workshops and training sessions during this event, individuals can learn best practices in areas such as customer service, marketing strategies or product development. This helps to improve industry standards overall while creating jobs for locals.

Strengthening Partnerships

The Indaba fosters partnerships between different tourism stakeholders such as hotels, tour operators or travel agencies. These collaborations help in creating more comprehensive packages that cater to diverse visitor needs. For instance, a partnership between a hotel and a tour operator can result in customized packages that include accommodation and guided tours at discounted rates.

Attracting Repeat Visitors

By attending the Indaba, South Africa can continue to attract repeat visitors. This is because it helps to keep the country’s tourism offerings fresh and exciting. Through new partnerships and innovative products, visitors are more likely to return and recommend South Africa as a top travel destination.

In conclusion, the Indaba is an essential event for South Africa’s tourism industry. It provides a platform for showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage, enhancing industry standards, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

South Africa is a special country with exceptional biodiversity, much of which is unique and makes us one of the world's like-minded megadiverse countries. This biodiversity wealth gives people tangible benefits like food, clean water, medicine and materials. It supports agricultural and fisheries production and helps protect us from natural hazards such as droughts and floods; and provides a vibrant tourism industry while offering natural spaces for recreational, spiritual and cultural activities. South Africa's economy is dependent on this biodiversity. As of 2018, the biodiversity sector has been maintaining  over  418 000 sustainable jobs, and compared  favourably with the mining sector at the time. Many of jobs are created in far-flung rural areas, providing an opportunity for contributing to rural economy.

As the world is recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic and experiencing an unprecedented loss of biodiversity and financial constraints through budget cuts for the biodiversity sector, we are presented with a clarion call and an opportunity to halt biodiversity loss and change the way we live, eat, grow, build and power our lives to achieve a carbon-neutral, “nature-positive” economy by 2030. Business as usual is no longer an option, and we need a fundamental transformation across three socio-economic systems such as nature, food, land and ocean use; infrastructure and the built environment, as well as extractive industries and energy. These systems have an opportunity and a responsibility to reverse biodiversity loss whilst at the same time they also have tremendous upside benefits to gain by embracing a transformative approach now.
