Day trip Havana

Havana woman with cigar

Havana has been largely frozen in time in the wake of the 1959 Revolution. Decades of economic crisis and shortages have left much of Havana in severe decay and decomposition. The great exception to this rule is Habana Vieja, which has been meticulously restored to much of its colonial glory. What new construction has occurred has borne the drab architectural stamp of the former Soviet Union and its central state planning. Luckily, most of this has taken place largely outside the boundaries of the traditional city center. Today, Havana, with some 2.5 million inhabitants, is the largest city in the Caribbean and Cuba's undisputed political, business, and cultural center.

A must see for every visitor to Cuba!

Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba streetscene

Founded in 1515, Santiago was one of the first of seven towns in Cuba and the Spanish colony's capital until 1553. Diego Velázquez, the founder of the original seven villas, built his mansion here, and the house still stands in the heart of the historic quarter. The Spanish character of the city would soon be supplemented by other influences. After the 1791 revolution in Haiti, a large number of French coffee plantation owners fled with their African slaves and made their way to Santiago. Black Haitian workers followed, as did large contingencies of West African slaves, sold to work on the plantations.

Santiago today has the requisite noise, traffic, and pollution of a large city, but the intimate, friendly feel of a provincial capital, with leafy, peaceful neighborhoods where men play dominoes outdoors on hilly streets. A visit to Santiago can feel somewhat frenetic, and some visitors find that the friendly, forward character of Santiagueros a special feeling, different than all other cities in Cuba. An industrial port city, Santiago was hit especially hard when Cuba lost its Soviet support and Eastern bloc trade partners during the Special Period.

Among its natural values, the hills of Maniabón are emphasized, especially the orographical accidents of the calcareous hills, the smooth hill like formations and the underlying plain, spectacle that is scarcely repeated in Cuba and in the world; reinforced with the nearby view of the bay and the panoramic view of the extensive coconut plantations of Key Bariay, seen from the hill, natural window of this place.

I am an avid beach vacation fan, however, on my recent trips to Cuba, I have been spending a lot of time travelling off the resorts. For those planning a beach vacation in Cuba, here is a list of the best excursions from Holguin or Guardalavaca Cuba hotels.

sunset on street Cuba Excursion Downtown Holguin Cuba

Best Excursions from Holguin or Guardalavaca Cuba Hotels

Cuba excursion: visit downtown holguin.

If you love to experience life and culture in local cities, then a day trip to Downtown Holguin might just be what the doctor ordered. During this excursion, we did: a walk through Holguin’s main square and pedestrian walkway.

Inside a flea market Cuba Excursion Downtown Holguin Cuba

Shopping:  On the pedestrian mall keep an eye out for this flea market which was inside the building. There were many vendors and shops that accepted the Cuban tourism currency (convertible peso CUC).

Pedestrian walkway Cuba Excursion Downtown Holguin Cuba

Historic Cars: They will be driving all around on the busy streets of Holguin. Keep your eyes peeled for Cuban Ferrari’s too; the horse-drawn buggies which are a traditional car service.

Cuba Excursion Fidel's Birth House of Castro Ruz Family Cuba

Cuba Excursion: Village of Birán House of Castro Ruiz Family

I love that Cuba is embracing its history and culture now with excursions like a visit to the childhood home of Fidel Castro. Through guided tours, we learned all about the life of the famous leader growing up in Birán. From the schoolhouse where he studied, through the home of his parents and other main buildings in the village, it was a look at the humble beginnings of both Fidel’s father and Fidel himself.

Holguin Excursion A Day in the Life of a Cuban Farmers House

Cuban Excursion A Day in the Life, Farmers House (Biran)

I have to admit I thought this excursion was a bit bullshit when I first heard about it. However, a funny thing happened in Cuba during a tour of the region. A bunch of us had to go to the bathroom, and our tour guide and bus said they knew a perfect place to stop. Unannounced we pulled the bus up at this farmer’s house, and he and his wife jumped into action.

Farmer pours coconut water Holguin Excursion A Day in the Life of a Cuban Farmers House

We were able to enjoy washroom facilities, some fresh coconut water, some baked treats and coffee. What we thought would be a quick bathroom break turned out to be a fascinating look at the life of this Cuban farmer and his family. It is customary for them to host and greet people, even when they arrived as we did. This little stop ended up being one of my favourite moments in Cuba.

Lunch Ecological Park Rocazul Holguin Cuba

Multiple Excursions at Ecological Park Rocazul

There are many types of excursions with stops to Rocazul park. They have various activities here, and I’m outlining the ones that I experienced. Some of the below can be combined depending on the tours you book.

Catamaran Ride at Ecological Park Rocazul Holguin Cuba

Catamaran Ride

We had a short boat trip in the bay inside the ecological park. There were drinks flowing and music playing, and it was nice to sit in the breeze and enjoy the sites. What I liked about this ride is that it wasn’t a full-day catamaran tour, but a short ride out and around the bay and back.

Farmer's House in Ecological Park Rocazul Holguin Cuba

Visit Farmer’s House

Personally, I prefer the farmer’s house we visited in Birán (mentioned above) as it was a more genuine experience. Here at the Park Razul, we met this farmer who showed us how to Siesta on a traditional Cuban chair. Also, something of interest, this farmer’s house is actually for rent, and you can spend a night here.

Lunch Ecological Park Rocazul Holguin Cuba

Cuban Lunch

Most excursions will include lunch, and there are some restaurants on the property which will serve large groups from bus excursion tours. The lunch included a typical Cuban meal you’ll get on every excursion, salad, a main dish of chicken, pork or fish and dessert. Of course, there is also a bar with lots to drink.

Speed Boats at Ecological Park Rocazul Holguin Cuba

Fishing/Speed Boats

Other trips at Ecological Park Rocazul include fishing trips where you take a speedboat out to the Bay to go fishing. You bring back your fish, and it is prepared for you so you can enjoy it over lunch.

Cayo Bariay

I’m excited to see Cuba embracing its history. Here at Cayo Bariay, while most of this attraction is man made, it symbolises Columbus’ arrival in Cuba.

Monument at Christopher Columbus’ Landing Site

The white pillars are meant to signify Columbus’ ship which met with Cuban Natives represented by the clay statues. Venture down past the monument to the beach which is said to be the landing spot where Columbus landed. I have to admit, although man made I did enjoy the thought I was standing on the very beach Columbus landed in Cuba.

Sometimes you just have to leave the comfort of your beach chair and head off the resort. We put together a list of the best Excursions to take from Hotels in the Holguin or Gaurdalavaca areas of Cuba. From historical sites, cultural attractions to shopping in downtown Holguin we've got you covered here. | Cuba | Excursions | Attractions | Off the Resort | Holguin | Gauradalavaca | Tours and Excursions |

Cuba Excursion Lookout at Cayo Bariay

Indian Village

Walking into the main doors of the Indian Village we were greeted by a very excited Christopher Columbus carrying a wooden cross. He was signalling us to come and look and before long Cuban natives curious to meet this unknown man arrived to check him and us out.

Cuba Excursion Indian Village at Cayo Bariay

The village is a recreation of what life was like for now extinct Cuban natives. A part of their history I knew very little about, until now. The tour also takes you up to the lookout which will give you a better look down on the famous beach where Columbus’ ships landed.

Cuba Excursion: Catamaran Ride to Cayo Saetia

It was a long day, but so worth it for me. After a long bus ride to Antilla Cuba, we boarded a Catamaran and set sell for a 1-hour cruise to Cayo Saetia Beach. The catamaran dropped us off, and we had the day to play on a long white sand beach with crystal clear blue waters. We had lunch on the Island, and there was even a little safari ride in jeeps around the island.

Gibara Cuba Fishing Village-44

Cuba Excursion: Day Trip to Gibara

This historic fishing village recently reopened as a tourist destination in Cuba after recovering from Hurricane Ike in 2008 which destroyed much of their infrastructure. Restoration of the hotels in the village are complete, and the squares are showing signs life again. A full post outlining Gibara is coming soon.

Where to Book Cuba Bus Tours and Excursions

One of the challenges for us as Canadians is how these excursions and tours are packaged for us. We buy all-inclusive trips from vacation providers and then purchase day trips from these same providers. If you like a full list of available off the resort experiences in Cuba, be sure to visit your hotel’s tour desk. Ask about local tour operators like Cubatur, Cubacanacan and Gaviota have a range of tours to choose from. (A post on Cuba’s Local Tour Operators is following too.)

For help planning your dream trip to the Real Cuba: Cuba Tourism:  Consulate General of Cuba – Tourism Section Tour Operators: Cubatur, Gaviota Tours Note: You can book many of these tour options directly with your hotel’s tour desk in Cuba or through your travel agency.

The Cuban province of Holguin and its capital city of the same name might not have the same kind of game recognition as Havana , Trinidad , or Varadero . However, it has just as much to offer – if not more! – than some of Cuba’s most famous destinations.

José’s family is originally from Holguin, meaning we’ve had the chance to explore parts of this incredible destination that few travelers get to visit. In our ultimate travel guide to Holguin, Cuba, we’ll let you in on all this beautiful area of Cuba has to offer and why you should visit Holguin when you visit Cuba. Holguin Cuba

Situated in the far eastern corner of Cuba’s north coast, the province of Holguin and its capital city  are much-loved destinations for in-the-know travelers who are looking to get a little more off the beaten path while exploring the country. While Holguin’s incredible beaches are well-known and quite popular, much of the rest of this province goes overlooked despite having so much to offer.

One of the most obvious attractions of Holguin, Cuba its stunning natural beauty. On his first voyage to the Americas, Christopher Columbus landed in Holguin in 1492 and claimed that Holguin was “the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen.”

Columbus wasn’t right about much, but he was certainly right about the natural beauty of Holguin! Stunning beaches like Playa Pesquero, biodiverse jungles like Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, and more make this a spot you won’t easily forget.

Today, the province of Holguin is the third most populous in Cuba – after Havana and Santiago de Cuba , and its capital is Cuba’s fourth largest city. The city of Holguin is a transportation hub connecting the eastern extremes of the island with the larger western cities in Cuba . With its international airport, many Cuban and international travelers pass through the city.

What is Holguin Known For?

Holguin is best known to visitors for its incredible beauty, first and foremost in its beaches. However, the beauty of Holguin doesn’t stop at the edge of the sand. Important sites of natural beauty in Holguin include the coastal Parque Nacional de Bahia de Naranjo and the lovely Cayo Saetia and its nature reserve.

Inland you’ll find the Parque Nacional La Mensura and Parque Nacional Pico Cristal, both renowned destinations for hiking in Cuba . Plus, the wooded Pinares de Mayarí is home to stunning pine groves, coffee plantations, hiking trails, and lakes for swimming or kayaking.

Does Holguin Have Nice Beaches?

Holguin has some of the best beaches in Cuba and some of the best all-inclusive resorts in a country known for having some of the best beaches in the world. It goes without saying that the beaches you’ll find here are second to none – the dreamy white sand and crystal clear water you’d imagine on a Caribbean island.

Best Beaches in Holguin

Holguin doesn’t have just one stunning beach destination – it has several of them! If you’re adding the Holguin province to your Cuba itinerary , then you’re almost certain to want to include a beach day or two. These are among the most popular beaches in Holguin:

Guardalavaca

With picture-perfect white sand and clear, tranquil water, it’s no wonder that Guardalavaca is considered among the best beaches in Cuba , and is certainly the most famous beach in the province of Holguin. In fact, it’s the country’s third most popular destination for travelers!

While some of the other great beaches in Holguin are almost entirely for the use of private hotel guests at resorts, the beach at Guardalavaca is open to everyone, making it popular with Cubans and travelers alike. It’s a great choice for traveling on a budget – low-cost accommodations in rental apartments and locally-owned hotels make it possible to enjoy without paying resort prices.

Playa Pesquero

Just a few miles from Guardalavaca, Playa Pesquero is home to some of the whitest sand and clearest water in Cuba. This stunning beach – one of the best beaches in Cuba – is protected on both sides , making shallow water perfect for swimming.

Snorkeling, sailing, and other watersports are popular, and this dreamy beach is the perfect place for it.  Or, just relax on the soft sand – this is one of the best places in Holguin for it!

Resorts surround both Playa Pesquero and its neighbor, Playa Estero, and you’ll have plenty of options for where to stay. If you’re looking for a family-friendly choice, choose the Iberostar Selection Holguin – its pool has a fun waterpark for kids and kids club.

Playa Esmeralda

Just a stone’s throw from Guardalavaca, Playa Esmeralda is another white sand beach with stunning turquoise water. Closed in by craggy rocks on both sides, waves are small or non-existent, which makes for great conditions for swimming and snorkeling.

While Playa Pesquero gets perhaps a bit more name recognition with travelers than Playa Esmeralda, it’s certainly not for lack of beauty. Playa Esmeralda is that perfect Caribbean beach you’ve been dreaming of. Nearby Playa Las Caletas, wedged between Playa Esmeralda and the Parque Nacional Bahia de Naranjo, is another must-visit.

Cayo Saetia

While the area around Guardalavaca is the most famous beach destination in Holguin, it’s not the only one! The lovely, secluded beaches on the eastern side of the province of Holguin are nearly untouched and have far fewer visitors than Guardalavaca, Playa Pesquero, and Playa Esmeralda.

Located on the far eastern side of the province, Cayo Saetia – a small, mostly wooded key – is home to some of Holguin’s most lovely beaches. Here you’ll feel you’re truly off the beaten path , as most of the key is occupied by the Parque Nacional Cayo Saetia, where you can go on wildlife safaris and explore the area.

Things To Do in Holguin

Whether you’re traveling through the capital city of Holguin on the way to the beach or doing a trip through the stunning countryside of the province, you’ll find there is plenty to see and plenty of things to do in Holguin .

Things To Do in Holguin City

The curse of being so close to Cuba’s best beaches just an hour north in the area of Guardalavaca is that the capital city of Holguin is largely overlooked by visitors who rush to the coast.

If you have time in your itinerary, don’t overlook this charming and historic city, but spend a day exploring. You’ll find much of the charm and history of Havana but far fewer tourists and lower prices. These are some of the highlights when visiting the city of Holguin.

1. Climb to the Loma de la Cruz

Perched on a hill above the city of Holguin, the Loma de la Cruz – in English, the hill of the cross – is a stunning viewpoint over the city. The massive cross that tops the hill is visible throughout the city.

Reached by a nearly 500-step staircase, the climb isn’t for the faint of heart, but go slow and take frequent breaks and you’ll get there. Visit in the early evening to catch cooler weather and the sunset over the city.

2. Stroll Through Parque Calixto Garcia

Apart from the Loma de la Cruz, Holguin is most well known for its charming plazas like the Parque Calixto Garcia. This park is surrounded by historic and important buildings for the city, such as the Casa de la Trova, the Cine Martí theater, and the city’s museum.

Continue north on the pedestrian street on the east side of the park to visit the city’s other prominent plazas.

3. Visit Parque San José

Just two blocks north of Parque Calixto Garcia, Parque San Jose is another one of the city’s beautiful and historic plazas. Home to the historic Iglesia de San José and lined with colorful and historic buildings , this square is well worth a visit.

4. Marvel at the Catedral de San Isidoro

Facing the Parque las Flores in the heart of historic Holguin, Catedral de San Isidoro – more commonly referred to as the Cathedral of Holguin – is one of the most historic buildings in the city. Originally built in the early 1800s, the church has undergone various restorations but retains its gorgeous and historic details inside and out.

12+ Best Things To Do in Holguin, Cuba

Things To Do in Holguin Province

In addition to visiting the best beaches in Holguin – which happen to be some of the best beaches in Cuba – there is a lot more to the Holguin province for visitors to enjoy and experience.  These are some of the absolute highlights – though not a complete list by any means, these are good to get you started.

1. Explore Wild Cayo Saetia (+ Spot Wildlife)

Set at the entrance to the Bahia de Nipe (Nipe Bay) on the far eastern part of the province, Cayo Saetia is a lovely natural cay with an incredible beach on the northwest side of the island.

The island is covered by the Parque Nacional Cayo Saetia to protect its array of wildlife – which includes tons of animals you wouldn’t expect, including zebras, antelopes, buffalos, and even ostriches. Wildlife safaris are popular excursions, are catamaran tours around the island with stops at beaches and for snorkeling.

While you won’t find any safari lodges for families or the like in the area as you might in other wildlife areas , Cayo Saetia’s wildlife experiences are one of a kind and much more affordable than similar wildlife encounters you might find elsewhere.

2. Visit The Charming Town of Gibara

Just a small town with fewer than 100,000 people located on the coast, Gibara holds a special magnetism and charm. One of the destinations Christopher Columbus first visited in Cuba and one of the nation’s oldest cities , Gibara is packed with history.

Gibara is home to the annual Gibara International Film Festival every August and the Cine Pobre International Film Festival in April, making these action-packed weeks the perfect time to visit.

Gibara feels much like the small town of Baracoa , which is located on Cuba’s northern coast just east of the provincial border of Holguin. While I certainly wouldn’t recommend skipping Baracoa (Cuba’s first city, packed with historic landmarks and plenty to see and do), Gibara shares much of Baracoa’s charm.

3. Visit El Chorro de Maita

Located just south of Guardalavaca, El Chorro de Maita is one of Cuba’s important archeological sites, where archeologists have made discoveries shedding significant light on local (Taino) indigenous history.

An important burial site, here you’ll see the remains of hundreds of skeletons and the items they were buried with. There’s also a recreation of a Taino village and buildings. While the recreations are a bit cheesy, a visit is among the best things to do in Holguin .

4. Explore the Coastal Parque Nacional Bahia de Naranjo

Wedged between some of the nicest beaches in Holguin, the Parque Nacional Bahia de Naranjo is a great addition to a Holguin beach retreat. This national park offers a variety of nature trails to explore, where you can see unique wildlife and impressive flora and fauna.

Its most visited attraction is the “delfinario” – a sectioned-off portion of the ocean where visitors can swim with dolphins! This is an extremely popular activity for visitors to the resorts nearby.

Getting to Holguin

Getting to Holguin is relatively easy – its capital city is a transportation hub and has frequent buses and shared taxis that pass through the city on a regular basis. These are some of the most common ways to get to Holguin.

Holguin Airport

Though tiny, the Frank Pais International Airport in Holguin has daily flights from other cities through Cuba, including Havana. The airport also has regular international flights, including frequent flights to cities in Canada, Latin America, the United States, and even Europe .

Havana to Holguin

From Havana’s main bus station near the Plaza de la Revolución, you’ll find frequent buses to Holguin, which usually depart every four hours or so. However, the bus ride lasts for about 10 hours , making it either a long day of travel or ideal for an overnight trip.

If you’re not interested in taking a bus – who would blame you? – you can also find shared taxis, which also depart from the bus station.

Flights from Havana to Holguin are also frequent, though they can get a bit pricey. However, given the duration of the bus trip, I do recommend looking into your flight options! We’ve flown between Havana and Holguin before, and it was a breeze.

Santiago de Cuba to Holguin

If you can’t find a direct flight to Holguin, another great choice is flying into Santiago de Cuba and taking the bus from there. Frequent buses connect these two eastern cities, and with a bus ride of just over three hours, it’s quite manageable.

Or, take a private or shared taxi from Santiago de Cuba. Connect with your casa particular host or with other travelers to see if you can split a car or even head to the bus station in Santiago de Cuba, and you’ll find shared taxi drivers filling their cars.

1. Take a walking tour of Holguin, Cuba.

In recent years Holguin has made great strides in improving its tourist infrastructure. There are many options for excursions that you can choose from when you visit this fantastic region. One of the best ways to enjoy this stunning region is by joining a walking tour. This fascinating tour takes you through Cuba’s third most populous province.

These tours provide a unique and authentic connection to Holguin’s culture, history, and natural beauty. 2. Go to the San Isidro Cathedral in Holguin Cuba

The cathedral’s high bell tower attracts the attention of locals and tourists, making it impossible to miss this beautiful building. Its construction began in 1720. There was an earlier small church on the site where the first Mass was held in honor of the founding. In 1979, the San Isidro cathedral was finally completed and dedicated. The cathedral has seen many changes over the years, but the Moorish-inspired ceilings that are the most stunning have remained unchanged. You will be able to observe its impressive architecture and design once you enter. It has a high cultural value and is full of details that will make you want to explore its cool interior for a while. It radiates a feeling of peace and tranquility.

3. Climb to Loma de La Cruz

All Holguin visitors should visit La Loma de la Cruz for its spectacular views and heart-stopping climb. The wooden cross that dominates the area is the reason for the name. A Franciscan friar set it up 232 years ago to end the dry spells.  You can drive or use any other transportation to get there, but we really recommend walking. The 458 steps are what gives life to the Loma De La Cruz.

things to do in holguin lomo de la cruz

However, we don’t recommend that you climb the 458 steps during the middle of the day!. Have someone hold your hand – or at least help you up the steps and book a tour to explore the Loma de La Cruz and explain the history.  Book a walking tour of Holguin here and enjoy this incredible experience.

4. Stay at a Casa Particular in Holguin

If you haven’t pre-booked your Holguin accommodation – which we highly recommend – you will find Casa Particular owners waiting for you at the Viazul Bus station, brandishing photos of their homes, inviting you to stay.  Casa Particulars offer a unique way to see Cuba from a local perspective. Casa Particulars are a type of bed & breakfast or guest house that rents rooms to travelers who want to live in a private home, close to the country’s authentic neighborhoods and people. We have stayed in many casas throughout Cuba and we think they make the best type of accommodation in Cuba.

Our recommended Casa’s to stay at in Holguin are as follows:

Hostal Refugio de Reyes:   This family of biologists has been in the house for more than 35 years and you’ll find all the rooms that they rent are independent of the main house, have their own terraces, and are surrounded by gardens.  It’s a gloriously relaxing place that’s just 7 minutes walk from downtown Holguin.   There’s a double and two triple rooms here.  Check rates and book now!

Daniel and Marcia provide accommodation at the Rock Hostel – it’s a fabulous location with two rooms for rent. Each has a private bathroom with hot and cold water, A/C, a TV, and a fridge.  One room is an apartment that contains a kitchen too!  There are two outdoor terraces here perfect for sunbathing and relaxing.  Check rates for Holguin casa particulars like this and book now.

For more information on staying in Casa Particulars and how it works, see our guide to Casa Particulars here .

5. Go to the Casa de la Trova in Holguin – the House of Music!

This is one of the most famous and popular music houses on the whole island. Visitors and locals alike enjoy the rich, melodious sounds of Cuban music and have a great time. If you’re in Holguin, make sure to stop by Casa de la Trova El Guayabero to enjoy a live serenade featuring amazing musicians, dancing couples, and the beat of a timeless Danzon.

6. Go to Holguin’s Beaches!

Holguin beaches share the same characteristics of white sand crystal clear waters as other provinces in the West of Cuba. The coasts of Holguin are unique because they are often found among other rocky compounds, making them unique.  For sun-lovers and beach lovers, Holguin offers paradise-like beaches such as Playa Esmeralda, or Playa Guardalavaca, where a variety of water activities are available. There’s more on Cuba’s Best beaches here.

There are many beautiful beaches at Holguin, but we recommend these three:

1 – Playa Esmeralda

This incredible beach is located just a little more than 5 km west of Guardalavaca and features clear, warm, intensely green waters. This little paradise is surrounded by steep hillsides and various vegetal plants that add charm to the spot. This beach is rightly ranked as one of the top ten beaches in the Caribbean. It is a popular choice for holidaymakers because it has 900m of soft, white sandy beach and clear blue-green water.

2- Playa Guardalavaca

The shell-shaped beach is a favorite of locals. The virgin white sand makes it the perfect place to sunbathe. The main town is just a short walk away, and the local market is right on the beach.  You can find a lot of locally made crafts and arts, such as pottery and leather, at the market. There are also a few bars and cafes in Guardalavaca where you can enjoy your day and drink some delicious Cuban cocktails.

things to do in holguin guardalavaca beach

Guardalavca is the main tourist resort some 72 km to the northeast from Holguin, but it’s still lovely and homely. The name means “keep the cow safe” – thought to pay homage to a pirating past from marauding buccaneers who used to come here for refuge. There are a couple of swish hotel complexes here but it’s still a glorious beach!

3 – Pesquero Beach

Many tourists and Caribbean lovers consider this one to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba. You can do many other activities at Pesquero Beach than just swimming in the turquoise waters and playing volleyball.

7. Go to the Museum of El Chorro de Maíta

The El Chorro de Maita Museum is a small but informative museum that is open to tourists visiting Holguin’s beaches, and it allows you to spend a few hours learning more about the Cuban past. You will find old photographs and archeological pieces here. You can also see an exhibit about how the deceased were buried in earlier times. The Tahina Village is only 50 meters away from the museum and some sculptures here tell the story of the social life of the area’s tribes.

8. Visit a Park in Holguin, Cuba

Holguin has been blessed with beautiful places and incredible natural wealth, so if you plan to go to Holguin, visiting some of its amazing natural parks is one of those things we recommend the most. You cannot miss this opportunity to get in touch with mother nature! Some of the Parks that we recommend you don’t miss:

Peralta Park, Holguin:

Many people also refer to this Park as Parque de las Flores. This is the central plaza in the capital of Holguin province, in the eastern part of Cuba. Here, you will find the Catedral de San Isidoro, one of the city’s most important buildings. Although the park was initially designed in 1720, it wasn’t until 1790 that it became the heart of the city’s most important political or social events.

San Jose Park, Holguin:

The park is also known as Parque Infantil by locals. Surrounded by vegetation, this park is quiet, making it a great place to take in the freshness and shade of the city, and it’s also surrounded by interesting architecture that you must see when walking through the city.

Calixto Garcia Park, Holguin:

Designed more than 300 years ago by Gregorio Franci, Calixto Garcia Park is a magnificent, monumental square located in the middle of the city. It is part of Central Park and is considered an expression of Holguin’s identity.  It is home to some of the city’s most important buildings, commercial buildings, and theatres. It is also used as a stage for all types of local activities, including fairs festivals.

9. Visit the island of Cayo Saetia

This marvelous cay is located on the northern shore of Holguin province at the largest bay in Cuba (Bay of Nipe). Cayo Saetia was a part of mainland Cuba from 1902-to 1903 until a canal was constructed to facilitate shipping and trade. The forests and grasslands make up a unique landscape that is highlighted by a variety of flowers and trees, including wild orchids. Mangroves are a source of evergreen vegetation along the southwestern coastline. The cay boasts 12 beaches, many of them bordered by rock cliffs. Here you can enjoy “African”, Jeep style Safaris, Horseback Riding, Non-motorized Water Sports, Snorkeling, Diving, or just relax on its intimate beaches.

Cayo Setia is easily accessible by water, air (helicopter flight from Guardalavaca), and land. A small bridge connects the Cayo and the main island.

10. Go to the Rocazul Biopark from Holguin Cuba

You should make a point to visit the park in the bay of Naranjo while you are in Holguin. It is a beautiful natural park with various faunas and floras that you will find at every corner. This beautiful Natural Park, established 17 years ago, allows you to disconnect from the world and dive into nature. There are eco-guides available that will guide you through the beauty of the area. It is an ideal location for many activities, such as hiking and trekking, wildlife navigation, diving, and more. It’s a great place to feel closer to nature and to help you appreciate the breathtaking landscapes that Cuba offers.

If landscapes and the natural environment are of interest, then you’ll want to take a look at Cuba’s National Parks.

11. Hike to the Guayabo Waterfall from Holguin, Cuba (Salto Guayabo)

Pinares de Mayari is the perfect place to experience an unforgettable and unique activity during your stay in this region. The Salto Guayabo here is a beautiful waterfall that allows you to jump in from two different locations. This waterfall is the main attraction in Mensura National Park.

You can take a trail through the tropical forest, which is home to many orchid and fern species. The lookout gives visitors unparalleled and incredible views of the waterfall. There are also Pozas de Rafael (Rafael pools) where you can take a refreshing dip in the natural pools at the base of the falls.

12. Visit the Bariay Monument

Located in Bariay Cay within the Cristobal Colon Natural Park, The Bariay National Monument Park has great historical value for Holguin because this is the place where Columbus landed on 28 October 1492. It shows visitors a very similar landscape to that Columbus found on his first landing on the island – and he described it as “The most beautiful land that human eyes would have seen”

things to do in holguin bairay monument

If you want to experience what Columbus found 530 years ago, then book this incredible tour to Bariay National Monument from Holguin.

13. Visit Finca Mayabe from Holguin Cuba

Every year, many visitors head to Holguin’s Finca Mayabe in south-eastern Holguin. This gem in Eastern Cuba will delight you with its tranquil fields, stunning views of the Mayabe Valley, as well as delicious local dishes. There’s not only the peace and tranquility of the fields but also Cuban cuisine that will allow you to appreciate the traditional Cuban farming lifestyle.

14. Visit the birthplace of Fidel Castro and Raul Castro – Birán.

Fidel Castro’s father was a Spanish-born Cuban farmer and businessman who purchased the Finca Las Manacas plantation in Cuba’s eastern Oriente region and Fidel Castro and Raul Castro were born here.  The farm was established as Museo Conjunto Historico De Biran twenty years ago. Its modest name aims to downplay any Castro “personality cult.” If you take a tour here, then a fascinating excursion through this museum takes you to a small town with charming wooden buildings and vast grounds. Fidel’s childhood bed is on display, as well as the graves and remains of his parents. It’s well worth heading here for a little insight into Cuba’s history.

15. Visit Gibara from Holguin, Cuba

Visiting small Cuban colonial towns is a glorious part of visiting Cuba.  Located around 33 kilometers from the city of Holguín, you’ll find a small but enchanting town named Gibara.  If you really want to experience the vibe of a  small colonial town, visiting this place is a must. Gibara features stunning places like the charming fisherman’s village of the same name – better known as La Villa Blanca due to its old defensive walls that protected them in Colonial times. Some of these walls are still standing.

Things to do in Holguin visit Gibara

There’s a 19 th -century Spanish fort here, a Natural History Museum, and also a cave system to explore.  The easiest way to explore Gibara is on a tour from Holguin, and this Gibara tour is a great option.

16. Drink Fabulous Cuban Cocktails in Holguin

Cuban cocktails are so refreshing and full of so many great Cuban ingredients! They’re also very strong. Without a doubt, you’ll have some good cocktails in Cuba, and you’ll have some great cocktails in Holguin. Many people travel to Cuba to see it all. But Holguin is a great place to get a taste of Cuban party culture. Famous bars such as Brisas del Valle, Azul, Danubio, La Malaguena, and Habana Club are great places to have fun and enjoy the best Cuban cocktails.

Exit Tours Plans Cuba Trip For May 2024

Photo: Exit Tours

Photo: Exit Tours

US-based Exit Tours is once again off to run a trip around Cuba. They’re headed to the eastern end of the island, and Christopher Baker (who’s written books about Cuba and has ridden there for years) will be guiding. This time, the dates are May 4-13.

In case you haven’t heard, Cuba is going through some political turmoil these days, and I reached out to Exit Tours to see what they had to say.

We are aware of current unrest and are not concerned. Our rides are in ‘Support of the Cuban People’, and we ask our riders to bring gifts. Hotel Soap, books in english, kids toys & books, fingernail polish, cheap sunglasses. Reading glasses.Baby clothes. Aspirin, Pepto Bismol. We bought stuff at the Dollar Store. We felt like Rockstars on the last ride, people waving and giving thumbs up, when a pack of motorcycle hoodlums rode by their small town. I rode 2 up with my GF and she had the Parade wave down by the last day. Everyone was friendly and happy to see Americanos in Cuba. We are not the issue, but contributing to the economy.
FULL ITINERARY Day 1 (04/05/24): Meet in Holguín The U.S. “support for the Cuban people” license allows individuals to travel freely to Cuba as they wish. We’ll meet this evening at our B&B in Holguín, in eastern Cuba (American Airlines flies twice-weekly to Holguín from Miami). Get a first impression of Cuba and some information from your tour guide while enjoying your welcome drink in your private pension. Dinner in one of the many private restaurants in Holguín is included in the price. Meals: Dinner Day 2 (210 km)(05/05/24): Via Bayamo to Sierra Maestra After breakfast we get familiar with our F700GS bikes and begin our first stage. It starts with a well-paved road that leads through semi-arid farmland to Bayamo, a colonial-era city that has a rich history at the forefront of rebellion against Spanish rule. From here, we turn south and head up into the Sierra Maestra mountain range to reach our overnight accommodation in private B&Bs in the remote hamlet of Santo Domingo. Meals: Breakfast -Dinner Day 3 (190 km)(06/05/24): Sierra Maestra to Marea del Portillo We descend the snaking mountain road to Bartolomé Maso, then turn west for Yara and Manzanillo. Time permitting, passing through Campechuela and Medialuna, we’ll ride to the Cabo Cruz lighthouse, at the southwest tip of Cuba. Stopping en route at Parque Nacional Desembarcos del Granma to view the site where Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and 80 other revolutionaries landed in 1953 to launch the war to topple dictator Fulgencio Batista. We then skirt the western foothills of the Sierra Maestra to reach the sugar-processing town of Pilón, on the Caribbean shore. We stay overnight in a pension B&Bs a few kilometers away from here in Marea del Portillo. Meals: BD Day 4 (180 km)(07/05/24): Mareal del Portillo to Santiago de Cuba Today we will have a breathtaking ride on one of the most beautiful tracks of Cuba. A narrow, mostly unpaved (and frequently badly damaged) road runs along the Caribbean coast to Santiago de Cuba. Boulders often bar our way! Using our enduro bikes, we can usually easily overcome these obstacles, turning this part of our journey into a true adventure. Meanwhile, the turquoise sea is always at fingertip distance on your right, with the Sierra Maestra mountain range soaring on our left. This is semi-desert, with cacti studding the barren landscape. Rocky coastal stretches alternate with numerous small beaches inviting us to relax and dream. Today’s destination is Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city of Cuba. Depending on our time or arrival, we may divert a short distance to visit the Basilica del Cobre–the holiest shrine in Cuba–before checking into our private B&Bs. Meals: BD Day 5 (60 km)(08/05/24): Santiago de Cuba Today enjoy a riding tour through this historically important and hilly city (founded in 1514 by conquistador Diego Velázquez). We lunch beside the clifftop “El Morro” fortress before heading east, out of town, to Parque Bacanao. We’ll ascend the twisting road that rises to Gran Piedra… a mountain peak at 4.011 feet elevation. Alternately, you might choose to use this as a rest day for independent exploration of the city. Meals: BD Day 6 (210 km)(09/05/24): Santiago de Cuba to Baracoa After breakfast, we depart Santiago and follow a scenic, winding route to the colonial-era (and now heavily militarized) city of Guantánamo, inland of Guantánamo Bay. We’ll stop at a mountainside mirador (viewpoint) to look down over the distant U.S. naval base, before riding one of the most spectacular roads of the country: La Farola. This sinuous and scenic mountain road was built in the mid-1960s and is reminiscent of European Alpine passes. We then descend La Farola dizzyingly, passing in a few kilometers from the semi-arid south side to the humid, lush northern side of the Sierra Cristal mountains and the oldest town in Cuba–Baracoa (founded in 1511). Here, depending on our time of arrival, they’ll be time to explore this fascinating and architecturally distinct city, which enjoys a magnificent setting in the Bahía de Miel (Bay of Honey). We’ll spend two nights in private accommodations. Meals: BD Day 7 (140 km)(10/05/24): Excursion to Yumurí and Punta Maisí. After breakfast we ride east along the Atlantic shoreline to the rivermouth of Yumurí and, beyond, to Punta de Maisí, the easternmost point of Cuba. We’ll return to Baracoa through the coffee-country via La Maquina. This mountain zone is the only area in Cuba where the indigenous Taíno peoples managed to escape extermination by Spanish conquistadores and European diseases. Even today, the faces of many people living in this region show facial characteristics of their indigenous heritage. Meals: BD Day 8 (180 km)(11/05/24): Baracoa to Mayarí Our last full day riding is one for the ages as we ride west along the denuded coast road. After a ride of 40 kilometres on a gravel and stony track, we’ll stop for refreshments at lovely Playa Maguana beach. Passing through Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, we finally reach Moa, “the Ugly Ducking” of eastern Cuba. (enormous surfaces torn open by extensive mining and nickel processing give an apocalyptic appearance to the landscape). We then turn south into the Pinares de Mayarí mountains—a cool upland zone of pine forests that were a childhood playground for Fidel and Raúl Castro. We’ll overnight in private B&Bs in the town of Mayarí. Meals: BD Day 9 (12/05/24): Mayarí to Holguín After breakfast, we head towards Holguin, with a short diversion to visit Finca Manaca—the birthplace and childhood home of Fidel and Raúl Castro. We’ll continue via Banes and the beach resort of Guardalavaca to arrive in Holguín in the afternoon. Here, we’ll return the bikes and finish the tour with a final dinner together. Meals: BD Day 10 (13/05/24): Depart Depart Holguín for Miami today (or extend your stay as may be required). Meals: B
