I stopped by my local Trek shop just at it opened last Sunday. It was by far the best time to drop by! Easy to find, plenty of parking. I was looking for an entry-level bike for my teenager son. I'm familiar with the brand, just never experienced a purchase of their product. I was greeted by Jacob who was warm and professional. He asked us a few questions then proceeded to steer us in the right direction. With Jacob's assistance, my son found the right bike for him! I believe in supporting my local neighborhood businesses so long as they deliver. Jacob did just that. Thank you! We had a great experience with our first purchase and look forward to doing business with Trek bicycle Westlake Village in the future.

Big shout out to Matt Napoli at Westlake Trek for taking the time and patience customizing my new bike to my request at the last minute, Matt took a bike off the stand to help me with my dream bike before my birthday. That is great customer service! Danny and his crew run a great shop that feels like walking into my house during a family event.

Westlake Village Trek, and specifically Brian, are Awesome. I had located the bike I wanted at their store, Brian held on to it for me with a deposit, and they had it ready for me today when I made the 60 mile drive to pick it up. Brian also helped set it up for me with a few optional items I wanted - Garmin Radar, Storage Bag, Phone Holder, Different Pedals, Etc. The store has a lot of inventory, and everyone walking in is greeted and helped right away. A good experience I wanted to share, Bob from Santa Clarita.

The customer service here is absolutely fantastic. I came in with zero prior knowledge and nervous to make such a large purchase and Tyler and Zach made sure that by the time I left I had all the information that I needed and felt so good about the purchase that I was about to make. The staff was so kind and patient which made my overall experience feel so much better. If you want to feel like someone is actually looking out for you and in your best interest rather than trying to just make commission and oversell you on a bike then come here. I will be sending all my friends and family here from now on!!

Best bike shop in the area by a country mile. They obviously only carry one brand, but if you value customer service, these guys have it down. Friendly, knowledgeable, and (if they're not too busy) will talk to you as long as you need them to. I was very surprised to learn they don't make commission on bike sales, cuz their attentiveness is that good. I went to The Hub and Serious Cycling, and neither seemed to care at all that I wanted to give them my money. Special shout out to Brian and Paul. 10/10 employees and all-around people.

Danny the manager is great about addressing any concerns. The staff including Zak, Tyler and Brian really make sure you are satisfied with your purchases. Mat can diagnose any mechanical issues, like a genius tech at Apple. You can find the best deals at this Trek store with everything.

The selection is the best, good sale prices and the most knowledgable staff. Tyler and Matt were really nice and helpful. Zac was like an engineer figuring out how to modify a bike for disability limitations. The prices were good but lots of confusion. Best to get deals in writing, but they want the customer happy.

I went into this store with my little daughters bike which I did not purchase. It had a small bolt problem I couldn't figure out. They fixed the bike in 5 min and didn't charge me anything. They have earned my business on my next bike this year. I forgot the gentleman's name but what a nice kind helpful man he was. Thank you guys

Lucas ROCKS! The moment we walked into the shop Lucas gave us the right amount of attention. We walked out with not just one but two e-bikes! The Powerfly FS 4 for me and the Allant 7S for the wife. Super excited to take them out for a ride! Thanks guys!

Had my bike worked on for a level 2 runs up. Chain and chain rings and gears were left like brand new. I was impressed. It hasn't looked like new in years. It was worth the 189.00. So happy with the job done. Looking forward to the summer

Just got my new bike from Trek Bicycles in Westlake. Danny Lupold, the manager went to great lengths to find the exact parts I wanted on my bike. Brian Simpson went to great lengths to set up my bike perfectly! I rode it today and it was awesome. Thanks guys! I highly recommend this store and this team!

How Siberia’s Tomsk ‘weaved’ houses of wooden lace (PHOTOS)

Wooden "laces".

Wooden "laces".

Tomsk, one of the oldest cities in Siberia, was founded in 1604. A century and a half ago, it was a major hub for transit and trade. Merchants, architects, scientists and doctors came here en masse. The city is well preserved with the old layout of the streets and wooden estates of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

How many houses have been preserved?

trek bicycle westlake village photos

"A merchant's house" in Tomsk.

Historically, Tomsk was built up with wooden buildings, since there was always plenty of trees in Siberia. At all times, local craftsmen skillfully transformed popular styles into wooden architecture. Neo-Gothic, classicism, art Nouveau - all of these architectural styles can be seen in Tomsk made of wood.

The carved elements around the windows.

The carved elements around the windows.

Even the wealthy locals preferred to order mansions made of wood, rather than stone. Their houses are decorated with carved gables, platbands, high spires and turrets, which is why they are dubbed “lacy”.

Houses in Tomsk.

Houses in Tomsk.

In addition, they stand out for their bright colors, particularly yellow, red, pink and blue. Today, in the city with a little over 550,000 people, there still remain about 2,100 wooden houses built before the Soviet era. Out of these, 701 are under the protection of the state.

The house with firebirds

trek bicycle westlake village photos

One of the most outstanding buildings in Tomsk is the so-called ‘House with the Firebirds’. The firebird is a magical creature from Russian fairy tales and its image is often used in folk arts and crafts. Firebirds decorate the roof of the house. This mansion on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street was built in 1903 and belonged to the merchant Leontius Zhelyabo. He ordered its construction for his daughter as a wedding gift. Several firebirds from this house can be found in the local museum of wooden architecture. The house is now divided into apartments and several families live there.

The Emerald Mansion

trek bicycle westlake village photos

This house on Belinskogo Street looks like a fairy tale castle. It was built in 1904 by architect Stanislav Khomich for his family, as well as for rental purposes. Carved balconies, bay windows and bright emerald colors - it resembles a real castle.

The house was declared a monument of architecture in 1974. Now, it houses the Tomsk Region Licensing Department.

The house with a marquee

trek bicycle westlake village photos

Another unusual wooden house by Stanislav Khomich. “The house with a marquee” on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street in 1902 was built for the merchant George Golovanov. Spires, marquees, towers - all decorated with carved wooden elements. Since 1995, it has been home to the Russian-German House and is open to the public.

The house with a spire

trek bicycle westlake village photos

A bit of wooden neo-Gothic can be seen on Kuznetsova Street. Dr. Valerian Vasilkov and his family lived in this house which was constructed in 1908. At that time, doctors worked not only in institutions (Vasilkov, for example, was a doctor on the railroad), but also in private practices. The first floor was intended for treating patients, while the second floor was used as living quarters. After the revolution of 1917, the house became an apartment building.

The house in the Tatar Sloboda

trek bicycle westlake village photos

Tatars from various regions of Russia settled around the Tatarskaya Street in Tomsk. This 1902 mansion belonged to Moscow Tatar Akhmedulla Akhmetov. There is a stone basement and the upper floors are made of wood. The windows are decorated with beautiful moldings. In 2007, the house was restored and its massive gate was reinstalled. Today, it is a residential building.

Looking for local route recommendations? We got you. This is a curated collection of the very best road, mountain, and family rides in the area, complete with digital route maps!

Devil's Slide Chatsworth

Distance: 3 Difficulty: Hard Devil’s Slide lives up to its name: It’s deceptively challenging with some jumps, sprays of loose gravel, and a mostly solid rock surface. This hidden gem in the Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, the site of a famously treacherous former stagecoach route, is worth a stop when you’re in the area. Start at the Lilac Road trail head on the west side of the park, then hang a right and you’ll quickly gather speed on this downhill track (also called Old Santa Susana Stagecoach Road). After about a mile, turn right on Andora Trail, a steep dirt track that drops you near Lassen Street. Turn back the way you came or plan for a shuttle back to the to the top.

Big Sycamore

Distance: 8-10 Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Big Sycamore is a local favorite fire road that runs the length of the canyon between Rancho Portero open space and Boney Mountains State Wilderness Area in Point Mugu State Park. Descend from one of several trailheads off Potrero Road or start at the beach for a gradual climb. For an extra challenge, detour onto one of the singletrack offshoots like Sin Nombre, Two Foxes, or Backbone. This is a great option for friends with different skill levels—start at one end and branch off onto different trails before meeting up at the finish.

Dos Vientos Ranch

Distance: 7-12 Difficulty: Moderate This open space system boasts 41 miles of shared-use (but not too crowded) trails that wind through chapparal and coastal sage scrub habitat and snake around the Dos Vientos Ranch housing development. Park at the Dos Vientos Community Park where you can hop onto Borchard Trail. From there, branch off onto Sycamore Park trail, then pick up El Encanto after you hit the parking area across from Cypress Elementary School. Other trails include Portrero Vista, Sumac, and Oak Ridge. Along the way, you’ll find punchy climbs, fast descents, twisty switchbacks, and occasional ocean views if the sky is clear.

Wildwood Hill Canyon

Distance: 10 Difficulty: Easy/Moderate Described by locals as “mellow,” “not too crowded,” and “doable for most levels,” Hill Canyon at Santa Rosa Valley Park is a good place to ride if you’re looking for a quiet, secluded spot to clear your head or boost your trail-riding confidence. Hill Canyon winds and dips along rocky single- and doubletrack, through meadowlands, past a waterfall, and under scrubby trees. Make it to Wildwood Trail and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic Santa Rosa Valley views.

New Millenium Trail

Distance: 12 Difficulty: Hard Locals suggest leaving your car at Bark Park on Las Virgenes Road. (If it’s closed, as it was after the 2018 Woolsey Fire, there’s another trail head up the road.) The Bark Park trail meets up with New Millennium, a roughly 11-mile circuit that loops around the exclusive Oaks gated subdivision. Follow it clockwise through native oak woodland and savannah along rolling singletrack laden with switchbacks, including a series of 10 crazy-tight hairpins that are no joke—those “caution” signs mean business.

Las Virgenese Canyon Lollipop

Distance: 13 Difficulty: Easy/Moderate This lollipop-shaped route in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area features unspoiled ocean and mountain vistas and some of the most pristine parkland in Ventura County. Start at the Victory trailhead on the eastern side of the park, follow East Las Virgenes Canyon Trail, then hang a right up the Virgenes Canyon Trail and take the first connector on the left that climbs to the ridge. At the top, swing right onto Cheeseboro Ridge, climb some more to Sheep Corral, then enjoy the fun and flowy descent back to the trail head.

Los Robles Trail (Western Section)

Distance: 16 Difficulty: Moderate When a section of singletrack is nicknamed for an infamous rollercoaster, it just begs to be explored. The most popular trail in the western portion of the Los Robles Trail system is commonly known as Space Mountain thanks to its series of tight switchbacks. Other parts of the trail are less twisty, but no less fun. You’ll ride along rocky singletrack with plenty of up and down, a couple of hike-a-bike sections, and a breathtaking view of the Pacific and, on a clear day, the Channel Islands from the picnic table at the top. Along the way, you’ll be treated to sweeping panoramas of the Conejos Valley.

Sunset Hills Woodridge Loop

Distance: 17 Difficulty: Moderate The linked trails in these two designated open spaces deliver an abundance of elements from fast singletrack and steep climbs to wide-open fire roads and rumbly rock gardens. To start at Sunset Hills Trail, park at the trailhead on Erbes Road. You’ll ride through oak woodlands, coastal sage scrub, and non-native grasslands before the trail gives way to sweeping views of Bard Reservoir and, on clear days, the Pacific. Take the mile-long Sunset Hills Connector, mostly downhill singletrack, to pickup the trails in the Woodridge open space area.

Cheeseboro Palo Comado Canyon

Distance: 30 Difficulty: Hard With 12 trails covering nearly 30 miles, this section of the Santa Monica Mountain Natural Resource Area is one of the most popular mountain biking destinations in Ventura County. Pick up the Cheeseboro Canyon Trail at the parking lot off Chesebro Road (yes, it’s spelled differently), then follow an old ranch road through woodlands, coastal sage scrub, and wildflower meadows (breathtaking in spring). After about 4.5 miles, turn left on Sheep Corral Trail for a mile or so, then hang another left onto Palo Comado Canyon and follow it back to the trailhead for a roughly 10-mile loop. Bring extra water—there’s little tree cover and it can get hot.

Point Mugu State Park

Distance: 30 Difficulty: Easy/Hard There’s something for everyone in this 70-plus-mile trail network of singletrack and fire roads nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. There’s the switchback-packed Guadalasca, the steep (and aptly named) Hell Hill, the exhilarating descent on Backbone, and the wildly popular Big Sycamore (see page 90). Choose from more than 30 distinct trails and discover something new every time. No matter what route you ride, you’ll be treated to majestic views of the Pacific Ocean and tree-studded valleys—and thanks to the marine layer, the dirt isusually nice and grippy. Avoid the parking fee and leave your car along Pacific Coast Highway.
