The Best Shimoga Trip Plan and Travel Guide for 2023

' src=

Never heard of Shimoga? Does Jog Falls ring a bell? Yes, Shimoga the home to Jog Falls – one of the tallest plunges in India. But this enchanting hill-town of Karnataka is more than just that. In this post I will share with you a perfect Shimoga Trip Plan including a visit to the Jog Falls from Bangalore on a weekend.

Our first trip to Shimoga will be etched in our memories, not for the famous Jog Falls that we went for, but for the places, we discovered off-the-beaten-track. This trip was special because we learned that not everything can be answered by TripAdvisor or even Google and that the “top things to do” are often subdued by the most “popular” (read commercialized) destinations.

So here’s a 3-day itinerary for Shimoga trip plan . Pin the image below to save this post for later.

A Quick Outline

Short on time? Steal This Shimoga Itinerary

I had written this travelogue of our Shimoga Road Trip to share all my excitement and learnings from the first trip we took. I hope you will enjoy reading and embarking on a virtual road trip with me.

However, if you are short on time today, here’s a snapshot of the ideal Shimoga itinerary for you. I have also included the map for planning your trip.

You ideally need 3 days for a 2-way road trip to Shimoga from Bangalore. This is the best Shimoga trip plan for a 3-day Shimoga trip .

An itinerary for 2-Days trip to Shimoga – Our Plan

That's me infront of the majestic Jog Falls in Karnataka on a Shimoga trip from Bangalore

Since we didn’t have an extended weekend, we took a short 2-day trip to Shimoga. On a 2-day Shimoga trip , you can follow the plan for day1 and day 3 of the 3-day Shimoga itinerary above.

It’s not worthwhile attempting to drive to the sunset point at Agumbe on a 2-day trip. We later visited both Agumbe and Kundadri on our road trip to Udupi from Bangalore.

Our Shimoga Trip Plan

Now that you have the itinerary and the map, let me blabber a little bit about my own memories of the Shimoga Trip. Come on-board in this virtual journey with me, through the serpentine roads in the densely forested hills, the waterfalls and the surprises on the way.

5th September: It had been quite a few weeks since we had last gone on a road trip – but it felt even more so because my team at the office were going for an offsite and it was an international break in the football season.

I knew it was not an extended weekend and we would only have two days of extensive driving and exploring at the same time. So, I had shortlisted two places – Mahabalipuram – a heritage site in a beach town of Tamil Nadu and Jog Falls in Shimoga, Karnataka.

Jog Falls, although in the same state as out hometown Bangalore, is actually farther away compared to Mahabalipuram. But in the contest between the hills and the sea, the hills won.

Day 1: Bangalore to Jog Falls Road Trip

Google maps showed that it would take around 8 hours to reach Jog Falls from our place and so we had decided to start earlier than usual – we packed our bags at night, crashed for about 3-4 hours and set off at 3:30 am in the morning.

That's me, Sinjana at the lovely hillside road with greenery all around enjoying the early morning sunrays.

To be fair, the roads in the Southern part of our economically diverse country is more than decent and it wasn’t much of a worry for me. Being late risers, we never quite get to witness the sunrise, but thanks to this trip we did as we breezed through NH48. We had packed our breakfast and we stopped at a place where we had a scenic view just a while after sunrise.

Jog Falls – First Stop of Shimoga Itinerary

With another stop for fuel, we reached our first destination, Jog Falls around 11:15 am in the morning. To be honest, I was slightly underwhelmed.

Four tall waterfalls falling from the mountains directly without cascading through any levels. As the waterfalls from such a height into the pool beneath the views of the forest at the backdrop looks enchanting. This is Jog Falls in your Shimoga Trip Plan

Given the reputation and the fact that it was just after the monsoon you can’t actually blame me for expecting a little bit more in terms of the volume of water.

As some sources have it, there are four different streams of water which merge to form the huge waterfall and we could actually see all four of them scattered in the hills.

Yes, it wasn’t as bountiful as Bharachukki Falls of Shivasamudram we saw couple of months back or the Jhari Falls of Chikmagalur . But the slow plunge from that height in the densely forested mountains had a beauty of its own.

Nevertheless, the place is pretty with a well-maintained viewpoint to walk around and enjoy the scenic hills and quaint little houses.

Outstanding views of the dense forests of Sharavati Valley wildlife sanctuary from Jog Falls

There is a stairway for tourists to reach the base of the waterfall, but it had to be closed because of unruly tourists whose actions had caused fatal accidents.

So you can’t enjoy swimming in the pool of mountain water any more.

What I liked was that it was way less crowded than any of the famous waterfalls I have been to and thanks to the restriction we were spared from the unpleasant sight of people doing their month’s laundry at the waterfall.

Keladi Rameshwara Temple

Thankfully we overpacked our sandwiches, which we had for lunch and saved some time in the process. On our way to the hotel which was at the town center of Shimoga, 100 km away we stopped at an ancient temple in Keladi, Rameshwara Temple.

Situated just a 8km away from Sagar town in Shimoga, the Keladi Ramesharam Temple stands as a testament to Karnataka’s rich past. It’s not only an architectural marvel but also a historical trove dating back to the 1500 AD.

An old temple from the 16th century built in Hoysala architectural style with intricate designs and inscriptions. This is Keladi Rameshwara Temple at Shimoga

Originally feudatories under the Vijayanagar Empire, the Keladas rose to prominence in the 16th century. The temple was erected during this era and has served as a central place of worship. The village Keladi is named after the Keladas.

The temple is built in the Hoysala style, distinguished by its intricately carved stone and woodwork. The carvings on the temple walls aren’t just ornamental; each of them serve as a chapter in a stone-bound history book, capturing not just religious themes but also societal norms of the time.

The temple dedicated to the worship of Hindu God Shiva has three primary alters. One houses Lord Rameshwara (the calmer version of Shiva), one worships Veerabhadra Swamy (the fierce form of Shiva) and the third is dedicated to Goddess Parvati – the consort of Shiva.

While walking through the temple, don’t miss out on the ancient inscriptions. Written in Kannada and Sanskrit, they provide valuable insights into the region’s history, rulers, and cultural practices.

After a trip to the Keladi Rameshwaram temple you can also visit the Keladi museum to know more about Shimoga’s history.

Evening at Mattur – the Sanskrit-speaking Village

places to visit at shimoga

After reaching our hotel, we freshened up and decided to look for nearby places to visit – but it had to be really close as it was nearing sunset.

The one name that popped up in our Google Search was Mattur lake which was about 5-6 km away from our hotel. We drove to that place only to find that the view to that lake was obscured by dense vegetation.

A trip to Shimoga | Mattur Lake Photos

We had to keep our car on the middle of the road and walk along a somewhat muddy road to even get a glimpse of the lake.

Mattur village is famous for being one of the few places in India where Sanskrit is still the primary language of communication.

As an added bonus, we walked across a bridge across the river Tunga and got a wonderful view of the sunset while asking locals about the lake which seemed unknown even to them.

Evening at the Tunga Bridge, that's me posing against the sunset

Day 2- Surprises in Shimoga

This is the map I had originally charted out for Day 2. It was an ambitious plan – we had quite a few places to cover which meant checking out the hotel as soon as possible.

Map of Day 2 of 2-day Shimoga Trip Plan from Bangalore

More than that, it was important to choose what to see and what to skip. After careful consideration, we shortlisted Mandagadde bird sanctuary, and the lesser known Kundadri hill-top which had got some great reviews for the temple atop it and the views.

We wanted to avoid trekking on this trip as we had a long drive ahead and aimed to reach home by 8 pm. People with full-time jobs would appreciate the importance of a good rest on Sunday.

We decided to take a rather elaborate route back to Bangalore, as we wanted to go via Chikmagalur, the land of coffee, which offers a scenic road trip through the Western Ghats .

Gajanur Dam and Sakrebailu Elephant Camp

A crystal clear lake reflecting the clear-blue sky and the dense forest of Sharavati Valley. This is Gajanur Dam in Shimoga itinerary

We checked out by 9 am before breakfast and were on the way to Kundadri when I spotted the gate to the Gajanur Dam. It was not on our plan but luckily for us it was open and we disembarked to take a look around, as here begins the series of pleasant surprises that awaited us this day.

The dam was beyond our expectation and turned out to be one of our top picks for the Shimoga travel guide. Let the pictures speak for themselves here.

As we moved along to the next stop, which was Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, the Sakrebailu road hugged the river Tunga for most of the journey and the views at some of the places were breath-taking.

There is another highly rated tourist spot along the route itself – Sakrebailu Elephant Camp but we had decided to give it a miss.

I didn’t like the sight of elephants in heavy chains tired of plying tourists all day for pleasure.

Mandagadde Bird Island

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary - A host of migratory words - mainly white cranes and some black egrets on the trees in in the river. Dense forests in the backdrop add to the charm of this hidden wonderland in Shimoga - a perfect spot in Shimoga trip plan

Coming to the Mandagadde bird sanctuary was a different experience in the sense that in India, most national parks and sanctuaries are drive-throughs and you’d have to be lucky to spot the birds without binoculars.

This, however, was a tree-house that offered a fantastic viewpoint of the island in the middle of the river where a variety of avians gather. The species mainly include cranes, egrets, and cormorants and make a picture-perfect scene under the clear sky.

The place has the potential to be a tourist hub with boating opportunity, but as of now, it remains a quiet viewpoint. So, with nothing more to do there, we made our way towards Kundadri.

Surprises on our way to Kundadri

A trip to Shimoga | Shimoga Lakes Photos

This is when our excitement was at the peak, we were contemplating a short trek to Kabaledurga as well on our way back.

The surprises continued throughout the road leading to the Fort had two beautiful lakes on either side and I could not help but stop just to click some pictures.

Truly said – “its not so much about the destination, but about the journey”.

Trek to Kavaledurga

Me and my husband trekking to the Kavaledurga Fort - on the second day of our Shimoga itinerary.

Kavaledurga also called Bhuvanagiri is one of the oldest forts in Shimoga built in 9 th Century Fort by the Nayakas of Keladi when they were under the great Vijayanagara empire.

The hike uphill is of moderate difficulty for non-trekkers – it took us almost an hour with multiple stops for photographs. The 360-degree panoramic view of the valley below, with lakes and green fields, is a sight to behold and makes it totally worth the effort.

At the top of Kavaledurga Fort - ruins of an old palace and courtyard.

Though the fort is now just a shadow of its former glory, it’s easy to appreciate the architectural marvel with 5 layers of defense. There are three beautiful temples inside.

Recent excavations by the archeological survey of India have unearthed the ruins of a palace, courtyard even swimming pools in the area.

Kundadri Hill Top

A little over 70 kilometers from Shimoga, this hilltop offers more than just sweeping views of the Western Ghats. It’s a blend of nature and history, home to a 17th-century Jain temple that adds a spiritual layer to the panoramic scenery.

places to visit at shimoga

The ride up is a motorable road, but if you’re up for some exercise, hiking is also an option. Once at the top, the vistas unfold in a 360-degree spectacle—rolling hills, meandering water bodies, and endless greenery.

We had actually planned to visit Kundadri, but as I made my way towards it, I felt that the road was too bad and too steep to climb up – to be honest, I was happy with what I had seen for the day and the place did not seem worth the climb.

We could have actually driven up to Kundadri had it not been for a thirty-minute detour in wrong direction thanks to poor internet connection and poor sense of direction of a stranger who sanguinely showed us the wrong way.

Anyway, such type of things happen on a road trip. And it’s better to drive away from the hills before sunset. That’s why I reiterate that you should ideally plan a Shimoga trip from Bangalore for atleast 3 days.

The picture of the Kundadri Hill-top above is on a rainy morning on our roadtrip to Udupi. It’s quite high up and the wind blew away the rain so we didn’t even get drenched.

Peacock at Shimoga

Other Places to visit on a 3-Day Shimoga Trip

Here’s a glimpse of some of the other places I have mentioned my my ideal itinerary before.

Agumbe Rain Forest

A duck enjoying the rainy morning at Agumbe lake. This is a great spot to visit with family in a Shimoga trip plan

When you’re laying out your 3-day Shimoga itinerary, earmark Day 2 for an excursion to Agumbe and Kundadri. Just around 90 kilometers from Shimoga town, Agumbe is a haven for nature-lovers.

Agumbe rainforest is one of the wettest places in India and home to unique species of flora and fauna. Drive to the Agumbe Viewpoint offers breathtaking vistas of lush valleys, especially during the monsoons when the landscape is at its most vibrant.

On your way back spend some time at the Agumbe Lake Park near Agumbe checkpoint. This vibrant lake in the cradle of greenery is a perfect place to visit with family. The forest guard may allow you to feed some bread crumbs to the swans and fish in the lake.

These are the only two places in Agumbe where you can stop on a 3-day trip to Shimoga. However, if you have a whole day in Agumbe you can do a lot more. Here’s a complete guide to Agumbe for you.

Agumbe and Kundadri hill top together are a perfect option for a one-day trip from Shimoga.

Shimoga Lion and Tiger Safari

The entire area of Sharavati valley including Jog Falls is a protected zone. But you can buy forest permit and visit the Sharavati Valley wildlife sactuary.

The Shimoga zoo and safari is a part of this region, a perfect family-trip destination. Also known as Tyavarekoppa , you can see lions and tigers in the wild on a safari bus or jeep hired from the forest department. children will also love the zoo.

This place was a 5-minute-drive from our hotel, but we couldn’t go there as we wanted to start before 10 am.

Opening times: 10 am to 1PM , then 2:15PM to 5PM

Entry Fee: Rs. 30/-

Safari Tickets: Rs. 70/- for Indian adults, Rs. 400 for foreigners

Extra charges for car parking, camera etc.

Trek to Dabbe Falls

places to visit at shimoga

A trek to Dabbe Falls takes 1.5 hours to ascend and similar time to return. So you might accommodate it on your 3-day trip to Shimoga, if you have a good fitness. The trek is rated moderate to difficult, including some steep climbs.

The place itself is secluded and offers the experience of raw untouched nature. You can club this with a trip to the Sharavati valley for a one day trip near Shimoga.

On a longer vacation of 5- 7 days in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka you can spend 2 days in Sharavati Valley , kayak at Honnemaradu lake and also drive to Murudeshwar temple in coastal Karnataka.

How to reach Shimoga?

The best way to reach Shimoga is by train. Trains from Bangalore to Shimoga are quite frequent, with at least 3-4 trains running daily . The distance from the railway station to the main city is just about 2 km , making it convenient for travelers.

Bus connectivity from Bangalore to Shimoga is also excellent. Both government and private buses run on this route. You can opt for a sleeper, semi-sleeper, or even luxurious Volvo buses, depending on your budget and comfort level.

The nearest international airport to Shimoga is Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore. From the airport, Shimoga is approximately 275 km away. You can hire a cab or take a bus to reach Shimoga from the airport.

If you’re driving from Bangalore, the distance to Shimoga is around 310 km . The road condition is generally good, especially if you take the NH 48 and NH 69 route. Traffic can be a bit of a hassle near cities, but once you’re on the highway, it’s a smooth ride.

Jog Falls is around 105 km from Shimoga. The best way to reach Jog Falls is by road. You can hire a taxi or drive down yourself. The road condition is fairly good, and it takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to reach.

Places to stay in Shimoga

So, are you in for a Shivamogga trip plan? Here’s a deep-dive into the accommodation options for you.

Shimoga is quite cheap when it comes to accommodation.

We stayed at what’s reviewed to be the best in Shimoga, Royal Orchid , a 4 -star hotel. It was a good deal at Rs.3400 per night without breakfast.

It is located very close to the safari park and has amazing facilities inside.

On higher side you can also book Harsha The Fern Shivamoga . It is a five-star property with the best-in-class service and amenties.

There are many other options in the city center for different budgets, as well as some homestays off the town.

You can also book KSRTC cottages at the site of Jog Falls if you plan a little earlier. Those get booked quickly.

Best time to visit Shimoga

All year, but for Jog Falls, it’s worth only if you go during the light to heavy monsoon (June- October). Otherwise, you can simply skip it and enjoy the hills, the sunset at Agumbe, wildlife safari and the perennial lakes.

places to visit at shimoga

That was quite a trip and a lot to see. The waterfall is beautiful. Too bad they had to close the path to it, it seems like these tourist who are too "brave" are everywhere. But it was still worth seeing even without it.

I visited Shimoga almost a decade ago with my batch mates and your post rekindled the memories. We had a crazy time at Jog falls. It surely is a fun place to make a short trip from Bangalore and near by places. It looks like you all had real good time

I never heard of Shimoga much. Thanks for sharing such a comprehensive guide with all details. Assembly of birds at Bird Island is my favorite part of this trip.

That was a fully filled weekend visit to Shimoga. It’s so disappointing to get somewhere overly touristy but glad to hear you found great gems along the way. That old fort was impressive and the views beautiful.

I have heard a lot about Shimoga but have never been able to visit unfortunately. Reading your post has made me more likely to visit it on my next trip to India. The Jog falls indeed are beautiful and worth the long drive you guys endeavoured. The elephant camp is a must visit for people with kids like I am . Thanks for sharing this post

I am guilty of not having explored Karnataka to the fullest. My travels have been restricted to just Bangalore and Mysore and a couple of towns around them. Jog falls has been on my list since I learnt about it in my school text books..haha.It is always nice to explore the unexplored and hope to catch up on this itinerary someday!

So glad you were able to stray from your original itinerary somewhat and be a little impulsive. Sometimes that is the best part of making a road trip — taking advantage of what you discover! Truly beautiful photos, and a great itinerary!

Thanks a lot. I was ethically against the elephant camp and thankfully all 4 of us were on the same page. Although the place itself looked quite nice beside the river and beautifully maintained

Thank you :). the trip was planned impulsively.. we really didnt have much time to decide and that was for the good

Really.. lot of places are getting closed because people decide to be stupid

Thank you.. we had a blast.. just like you I'm sure

Waterfalls and forts in Shimonga seems like the perfect combination of things to do. Road trips are great for discovery.

Wow, less traveled roads give great surprises. I have been to Karnataka but didn't have enough time to visit it all.

Jog Falls is on my bucket list for a long time. Your post detals out a very workable plan and I am bookmarking it for reference

A beautiful travel post. Great description and wonderful photography. Loved it.

I can see what you meant about Jog Falls being quite underwhelming. Still nice to see though, but the rest of your journey was incredibly beautiful! My favorite part is that the bird sanctuary is a treehouse / lookout where you can actually see the birds! Least favorite part of this was the poor elephants and I’m glad you didn’t contribute to the problem! It’s nice to know that for the most part the roads are easily drivable, and mapping before heading out is definitely a good idea!

I thought I explored Karnataka but never got the chance to visit this place. I heard about Shimoga before but unfortunately didn't have the time to visit during my last Karnataka trip. It’s good to hear that most of the road leading there is easily drivable. After reading this lovely piece, I definitely have to come back.

Jog Falls is beautiful – I had not heard of it before! Thanks for sharing this quick roadtrip. It would be perfect for a long weekend.

I love hearing about short weekends away full of adventure! Sometimes life doesn’t allow for extended trips, but so much can be gained from short ones too. The temple is beautiful as are the views of Jog Falls. Waterfalls are my weakness! Thanks for sharing the details for a quick road trip around this area!

Coming from the UK, the idea of weekend road trip of over 1000 miles is absolutely crazy! People think 3 hours is too much to drive in one day 😉 What a beautiful place to explore though, the views were stunning! I agree with your wife on Jog Falls, I think they are beautiful slowly cascading out of the forest. Hope next time you get to extend your trip 🙂

All of the waterfalls at Jog Falls seem surreal! Gajanur Dam sounds like it was surprisingly wonderful as well! I love it When we find a travel spot off the beaten path. We once found an abandoned beach on Oahu, Hawaii and it was the highlight of our trip.

Looks like a nice weekend getaway. Have been on many such short trips from Delhi, but need to explore Karnataka and Kerala now. A trip to Shimoga has it all, from panoramic views to beautiful drives to adventurous waterfalls. Definitely my kinda weekend getaway.

The way, you presented Shimoga makes it more beautiful. I am planning a trip to Shimoga from Bangalore with my friends. We will use to travel a self-drive rental car from my favorite Myles but is it safe to drive a car on this route? Hope I will get a reply soon from travelers.

Thanks Atul!. The road quality is good and the route is totally safe for a roadtrip. Just know beforehand about the travel restrictions for covid lockdown before going.

Great! Thanks for sharing the information. It is very useful for me as we are planning a trip to there. We choose to travel in a self-drive car which is rented from MylesCars. Can you please tell me is it safe to drive on this route?

Thanks for reading. The route is safe and the roads are well-maintained. We had no problem driving there when we went. And just this week we drove through the same route on our way to Karwar, didn’t face any obstacles in the common route.

According to history, the Shimoga region came under the control of the Kadambas of Banavasi around 345 AD. Later Kadambas became feudatories of Badami Chalukyas around 540 AD. In the 8th century, Rashtrakutas ruled this region. The Kalyani Chalukyas overthrew the Rashtrakutas, and the district came under their control. In the 12th century, the Hoysalas annexed this area and after the fall of the Hoysalas, the entire region came under the Vijayanagar Empire. When the Vijayanagar Empire was defeated in 1565 CE in the battle of Tallikota, the Keladi Nayakas who were originally feudatory of the Vijayanagar Empire took control, declared sovereignty, and ruled as an independent kingdom for about two centuries. In 1763 Haider Ali captured the capital of Keladi Nayakas and as a result, the district came into the rule of the Kingdom of Mysore and remained a part of it till India acquired independence from the British. 2024 solar eclipse: Here are 3 places to drive from south-central Pa. to see full event

places to visit at shimoga

A solar eclipse this spring will offer a lifetime memory for viewers who see it − especially if they are in a location where the moon's shadow fully blocks the sun.

To see the full event, observers must be in an area known as the path of totality, which will include 13 states from Texas to Maine.

South-central Pennsylvania lies outside of the path of totality, but a sliver of the northwestern part of the state, including Erie, will be in it, said Brian Lada, meteorologist with AccuWeather.com.

For those who want to witness a total solar eclipse, this spring is the time to hit the road.

The next big total solar eclipse in the United States will occur on Aug. 12, 2045.

Anyone living in south-central Pennsylvania at that time will need to travel to a long distance, such as going to Florida, to see it, Lada said.

Booking a trip: What's the best place to see the April 2024 solar eclipse? One state is the easy answer.

Plan a road trip to reach a location in the path of totality

Hotels and vacation rentals already are booked in many places along the path of totality.

At this point, planning a trip to see the total solar eclipse likely will involve a long day on the road, Lada said.

He suggest packing a cooler with food and drinks. It will reduce the worry of getting to a busy restaurant.

Be prepared for traffic jams after the event is over, he said. Millions of people will be traveling to the path of totality. Viewers might want to hang out in the area for a period of time before heading for home.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it takes twice as long to get home because there's going to be so many people on the highway, going in the same direction," he said. "It takes one fender bender to turn that into a gridlock."

Three places to go from south-central Pa. to see the total solar eclipse

South-central Pennsylvania residents who are looking for the closest locations in the path of totality have the option of staying in the state or heading to New York or Ohio.

Here are three cities to go to be in the path of totality:

Erie, Pennsylvania: The city in the northwestern part of the state has been gearing up for the big event. Lectures, parties and other activities are planned. It will take about 5 hours and 15 minutes to get there from York.

Rochester, New York: Numerous watch parties are planned in the area . It would take about 4 hours and 45 minutes to reach the city from York.

Cleveland, Ohio: Heading west on the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the Buckeye state is another option, and Cleveland is in the path of totality . It takes about five hours and 25 minutes to get there from York.

Travelers also could head to smaller communities, such as Titusville, Pa., which is on the edge of the path of totality. A trip there is under 4 hours and 30 minutes. The Drake Well Museum and Park , the birthplace of the modern petroleum industry, will be celebrating the solar eclipse that day. Admission will be buy one, get one free.

Be aware that the duration of totality will vary depending upon the location within the path. For example, the length of time will be 3:42 in Erie while it will be 0:47 in Titusville.

Why viewers should head to a location in the path of totality

Not everyone will be able to make a trip to see the total solar eclipse, but for those who can, it comes highly recommended from those who have witnessed one in the past.

"The difference between what's happening in York and what's happening in this path of totality is literally the difference between night and day," Lada said.

It's going to turn to nighttime for a few minutes in the path of totality, he said.

During totality, viewers will be able to see the atmosphere of the sun around the moon, and planets and bright stars will be visible. Observers might even see a comet, said Todd Ullery, planetarium director for the York County Astronomical Society and solar system ambassador for NASA.

Ullery said he saw his first total solar eclipse in 2017. Others advised him to sit back and enjoy the experience and to not worry about taking photographs because they will not turn out.

It's amazing how much the eye can see, Ullery said. Photographs are not good representations.

"There's just nothing like it in the world," Lada said.

Making last minute plans

The bad news is if you are traveling, you can expect to pay a pretty penny for accommodations, especially near the smaller towns. If you can find them, that is. Hotels are booked and campgrounds are full in many states. As many as 3.7 million people are expected to travel to the path of totality for the eclipse, according to travel experts.

Indiana is preparing for a record 500,000 visitors, according to the Washington Post . Arkansas and Indiana are also expecting record-breaking travel and spending.

Some states and counties have even declared states of emergencies and issued warnings associated with the eclipse. The governor of Ohio signed Executive Order 2024-04D, which directs all state departments and agencies to be ready and prepared to ensure the health and safety of residents and visitors.

If you decide to drive, make sure your car has been serviced, and you have a full tank of gas. The 10 Best Places To See The 2024 Solar Eclipse In The South

On Monday, April 8, a historic solar eclipse is set to pass through the United States, Mexico, and Canada—making it the only eclipse in the 21 st century to pass through all three countries. In the U.S., 13 states are partially in the path of totality, and five of those states are in the South. Parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky will all experience a total solar eclipse (the first since 2017), and everyone’s gearing up for the big show. From town festivals to hosted watch parties to hotel packages to food and drink specials, no one intends to let this momentous occasion pass without a bit of fanfare. Here are the best Southern places where you can see the solar eclipse in 2024 . Just don’t forget your special solar eclipse-watching glasses or you could seriously harm your eyesight!

What Is A Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on the Earth that blocks out some or all of the Sun’s rays. This rare phenomenon causes the sky to darken during the middle of the day as if it were dusk or dawn. Places that are in the eclipse’s path of totality (meaning the Moon is perfectly positioned to fully block the Sun), will see the most dramatic darkening.

When Is the 2024 Solar Eclipse?

The 2024 solar eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8, but when you see the eclipse depends on where you lie on its path. The eclipse will start in the U.S. at 1:27 p.m. CST in Texas and then travel in a northeast path until it appears in Maine beginning at 3:29 p.m. EST and concluding at 3:33 p.m. EST.

Where To See The Eclipse In Texas

Texas is one of the best places to see the eclipse because the eclipse will take a wide route through the state, meaning dozens of towns will experience totality. Forecasts also show clear skies for much of the state, providing optimal viewing conditions.

San Antonio, Texas

Firmly in the path of totality, the Alamo City is ready to do the solar eclipse right. There will be viewing parties big and small popping up all over the city on April 8, but one of the best spots to see the show is from the rooftop of the Thompson San Antonio Riverwalk hotel. Sitting high at 20 stories above the famous Riverwalk, the hotel’s signature indoor-outdoor rooftop restaurant The Moon’s Daughters is an ideal spot to take it all in. Join for a special Solar Brunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (just before totality begins) complete with themed cocktails, entertainment, and complimentary viewing glasses.

Explore San Antonio

Fort Worth, Texas

Another city in the path of totality, Fort Worth will experience totality for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds starting at 1:40 p.m. CST. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden will co-host a community watch party that will include family-friendly games, entertainment, and education. Those visiting from out of town can stay at the Crescent Hotel and take advantage of their special Eclipse Package that includes accommodations, a $50 food and beverage credit for a special eclipse happy hour at the Circle Bar, and complimentary glasses so you can view the show from the lawn of the Kimbell Art Museum directly across the street.

Explore Fort Worth

Houston, Texas

Though Houston doesn’t fall in the path of totality, it will see 94% obscuration which is pretty high compared to lots of other places around the U.S. that will see much less. One reason to watch in Houston is to attend the Total Solar Eclipse Celebration at the Space Center Houston . There’s no better experience than to visit the museum and space center, learn all about the galaxies, and then round out your trip by seeing a rare natural phenomenon.

Explore Houston

Grapevine, Texas

The wide-open spaces and gorgeous vistas of the Texas Hill Country make Grapevine a top place to consider for eclipse travel. The small town is going all out for the eclipse with a giant party in the Main Street Historic District with local restaurants and businesses featuring galactic-themed food and drink specials. They’re also offering a VIP Experience at Peace Plaza, and boutique property Hotel Vin will release a special limited-edition Eclipse Bourbon and host a Lunar Lunch.

Explore Grapevine

Kerrville, Texas

As the Primary Eclipse Partner for NASA, you may as well call this small town in Texas Hill Country Solar Eclipse Central. NASA will host the Kerrville Eclipse Festival beginning at 10 a.m. on April 8 at Louise Hays Park, which is just a few miles from the exact center line of totality. Programming will include scientific speakers, live music, children’s activities, and a great place to experience 4 minutes and 25 seconds of totality.

Where To See The Eclipse In Arkansas

A large portion of Arkansas will also experience eclipse totality on the 8 th , making it an equally desirable place to visit for the galactic event.

Little Rock, Arkansas

Head to the state’s capital for an eclipse party to remember. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is hosting a full-day of activities that range from educational talks to family-friendly games and laser demonstrations. Totality will reach Little Rock at 1:51 p.m. CST and last for about 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Explore Little Rock

Hot Springs, Arkansas

As one of only two national parks in the path of totality for the 2024 eclipse, Hot Springs National Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas might be one of the most sought-after destinations for eclipse viewing. The park has only been in the path of totality two other times—once in 1834 and another time in 1918. The next time the eclipse reaches Arkansas will be 2045, so don’t miss your chance to get in on the action. Eclipse Fest , featuring presentations from visiting scientists, activities, and demonstrations, will take place in the park on Arlington Lawn on April 6-7.

A much smaller portion of Missouri is in the path of totality than in Arkansas and Texas, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still great places to see the eclipse in the Show Me State.

Branson, Missouri

Though Branson didn’t quite make the cut-off for totality, the Silver Dollar City will experience nearly 99% obscurity. If you’re looking for a larger city with plenty of amenities for your eclipse trip, Branson is your spot. For a scenic home base from which to take in the eclipse, head to Branson Lakes Resort or Branson Woods Resort , both of which are offering Eclipse Watch Parties featuring themed snacks, games, and music.

Where To See The Eclipse In Kentucky

Only a couple places in Kentucky will experience totality. Luckily, the charming town of Paducah is one of them.

Paducah, Kentucky

Small town vibes with big city perks like great dining and accommodations make Paducah a wonderful place to visit . The town celebrates the eclipse with their X Marks the Spot event, a two-day community festival in historic downtown that will include street vendors, arts and crafts activities, and specials at local restaurants and bars.

Where to See The Solar Eclipse in Oklahoma

Only 11 destinations in Oklahoma will experience totality, but most are teeny tiny. Broken Bow is one of only a handful with a population over 2,000.

Broken Bow, Oklahoma

The total eclipse will last for 4 minutes and 17 seconds in Broken Bow, starting at 1:45 p.m. CST, which is one of the longest durations for a U.S. destination outside of Texas. If you’re looking for a quieter experience to watch the eclipse with loved ones, book a cabin around Broken Bow Lake, pre-order special viewing glasses online, and host your own private watch party.

More Americans will be able to view the 2024 total solar eclipse than the one in 2017, when visitors at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory stopped to watch the celestial event on Aug. 21, 2017. (Photo/NASA)

The best place to see the total solar eclipse in 2024

Here’s where the skies will be clearest — and the surroundings most beautiful.

places to visit at shimoga

Total solar eclipses — which occur when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s brilliance — are rare phenomena. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible from the contiguous United States for the first time since 2017, and the next one won’t be visible from U.S. soil until 2044.

In USC News’ four-part series on the eclipse, USC experts weigh in on multiple aspects of this extraordinary celestial event: how to safely view the eclipse, the best place to see it, how to photograph it, and its symbolism.

Part 2: Where to watch the event

More Americans will have a front-row seat to the 2024 total solar eclipse than they did during the one in 2017. As it moves along its path from southwest Mexico to northeast Canada, the eclipse will cross 15 U.S. states, from Texas to Maine, passing over more cities and densely populated areas than the 2017 eclipse.

An estimated 31.6 million people will be in the path of totality — where the moon totally blocks the sun — up from 12 million in 2017. Millions more are expected to travel to see the totality unfold.

Outside of the path of totality, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in all 48 contiguous states.

But no matter the location, the weather will be a mitigating factor.

“The only thing that’s going to matter is whether you have cloudy skies or not — because if you have cloudy skies, you’re not going to see the eclipse,” said Vahé Peroomian , professor (teaching) of physics and astronomy at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

The best city for clear skies

places to visit at shimoga

April 8 is historically an overcast day along much of the eclipse’s path. “Every city in the U.S. along the path of totality has had cloudy skies 60% of the time [on April 8] in the last 20 years,” said Peroomian, an avid astro-tourist .

He recommended paying close attention to the forecast before making travel plans. “You might travel a long way only to see cloudy skies,” he cautioned.

Peroomian singled out Mazatlán, Mexico, as the best city for eclipse tourists. “It has only a 28% chance of being cloudy [on April 8],” he said.

The best natural setting

If the weather permits, natural settings such as national parks can create evocative backdrops for the eclipse. Niagara Falls in New York, Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas and Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio are just a few of the most scenic spots along the path of totality.

Last October, Peroomian traveled to Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah with his son to see the annular solar eclipse, when the moon partially blocked the sun. He described the natural surroundings as awe-inspiring. As the sky got progressively darker, the air temperature dropped and the wind quieted.

“Birds stopped singing,” Peroomian said. “A hush fell over the landscape.”

The best place for scientific research

At the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, a group of 16 students has been working since the fall semester to figure out how to photograph the eclipse in the path of totality from a helium balloon that will rise approximately 100,000 feet in the air — to the edge of space. The balloon itself will burst at peak altitude, but its payload will descend to the ground carrying the photographic equipment and data.

The group is advised by Michael Kezirian , adjunct professor of astronautics practice, who led two student balloon missions during the total solar eclipse in 2017 as part of NASA’s Space Grant Ballooning Project .

places to visit at shimoga

This year’s group spent considerable time choosing the most promising location for the balloon mission. They had to evaluate many factors, including the best terrain for launching the balloon and recovering the equipment when it returned to the ground. If the hardware were to land in a forested area or a large body of water, it could be damaged or hard to recover.

Weather conditions are also a concern. The students are hoping to avoid clouds, which could make it difficult for aircraft to see the balloon during its flight; rain, which could make balloon setup even more challenging and damage the sensitive electronics on board; and high surface winds, which could interfere with filling the balloon with helium, ultimately affecting its predicted path in the sky. High-altitude winds also must be accounted for, as the balloon will travel with the wind current on its approximately 30-minute trip to peak altitude.

The group favored Texas for its proximity to Los Angeles to reduce travel time and costs and its comparatively drier climate with fewer trees and large bodies of water than other states in the path of totality. Second-year aerospace engineering student Nicholas Lototsky gathered hourly weather data from six local airports in Texas from the past 15 years and ran simulations of the balloon’s trajectory from launch to peak altitude.

He settled upon Del Rio, Texas — a small city approximately seven miles from the U.S.-Mexico border — as the optimal launch spot.

“Del Rio has a 2% chance of rain on April 8 compared to about 6% in other sites in Texas and a 70% chance of clear skies compared to only about 50% in other parts of Texas,” said Armen Arakelyan, a junior astronautical engineering major co-leading the project with astronautical engineering doctoral student Howard Hall. “Del Rio is also located west of the center of the path of totality, so when the balloon is released, the jet stream will carry it toward the center of totality.”

Arakelyan added that he’s looking forward to traveling to Del Rio with the USC Viterbi group.

“It’s one thing to just see the eclipse, which is really cool,” Arakelyan said. “But whenever you have some objective, some mission behind it, it just adds another level to it.”

The Strategist Guide to Shopping at Quince

places to visit at shimoga

Anyone who has shopped at an online retailer with no physical storefronts knows how hard it can be to figure out where to begin. There are dozens upon dozens of options that all seem as worthy as the next, but the reality is that products from any given brand are not all created equal. When you shop as regularly as we do, you learn that many brands just do some things better than others. Quince, the five-year-old start-up that seems to make a little bit of everything, is one of those brands.

Given the company’s expansive — and growing — inventory (which includes everything from kids’ clothing to jewelry to luggage) and how young it is, we’ve been pleasantly surprised by how good so many of its products are. In fact, Quince items appear in our “Best in Class” guides across multiple bedding and clothing categories, including cashmere sweaters , jumpsuits suitable for sleep and socializing, and supersoft linen for lazy mornings. Here, we’ve compiled all of the products from Quince that our writers and editors have recommended on the Strategist. To help you sort through it all, we’ve organized this by bedding, clothing, loungewear and activewear, and outerwear and accessories.

Quince Classic Organic Percale Sheet Set

Quince’s percale sheets earned our “Best in Class” crown for the very best cooling percale sheets , which are perfect for the warmer nights (or anyone who sleeps hot). Lauren Ro, our in-house bedding expert, says the sheets are “the crispest and most lightweight of all the bedding I have tried over the years” yet still “very smooth and nice to touch.” They are competitively priced at $100 for a queen-size set and kept Ro cool “during a summer heat wave with just the ceiling fan on, no AC.”

Quince Bamboo Sheet Set

The brand’s cooling bamboo sheets are also Strategist-approved. “The first thing I noticed was how cool and silky they felt — just like real silk,” Ro noted while testing them. She ultimately named them the best affordable cooling organic-bamboo sheets because they also drape nicely, hold up well in the wash, and make sleeping feel “incredibly luxurious.”

Quince European Linen Sheet Set, Queen

Linen bedding has been a hot commodity over the past decade, and Quince makes our very favorite set thanks to its quality and affordable price. Strategist writer Dominique Pariso is a self-proclaimed hot sleeper and compares the brand’s linen to “a gauzy linen button-down you’d throw on at the height of July heat,” describing it as “superlight with a slightly textured weave.” The set includes a fitted and a flat sheet along with two pillowcases.

Quince European Linen Duvet Cover

Ro is particularly fond of Quince’s linen duvet cover and named it the most affordable and softest linen duvet cover. “I love its lived-in, casual feel that never looks sloppy and only gets softer over time,” she writes.

Quince European Linen Pillowcases

For a smaller update to your linen closet, consider our favorite affordable linen pillowcase , which comes in a set of two for $40. On top of their Strategist-approved softness, the pillowcases are “prewashed, made of 100 percent European flax, and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, meaning they’re free of harmful chemicals,” reports Strategist junior writer Brenley Goertzen.

Quince 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

We’re also big fans of Quince’s silk pillowcase , which Strategist writer Tembe Denton-Hurst declared the “best silk pillowcase overall.” Silk pillowcases offer multiple hair and skin benefits, including cutting down on frizz, helping preserve hairstyles, and avoiding split ends, which Denton-Hurst observed during testing. She appreciates its convenient zip closure and range of colors as well as Quince’s generous return policy: “You’ll have 365 days from the date of purchase to decide if it’s right for you,” Denton-Hurst says.

Quince Eza Recycled Performance Rug

While Quince’s selection of Strategist-approved bedding is extensive, it also sells a solid rug that caught the attention of Strategist senior editor Simone Kitchens. Its fibers are made from recycled bottles, and it’s available in two colors — a textured navy blue and slate gray — as well as five sizes. Since the rug is made to order, it will arrive seven to eight weeks after purchase.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater

One of Quince’s most well-known items is its wildly affordable cashmere crewneck, which is our favorite affordable cashmere sweater for both men and women. Arielle Avila, our resident cashmere expert, describes it as “supersoft with a slight slickness to it.” It also has detailed ribbing on the neck, cuffs, and hem. After owning the women’s cashmere sweater for about a year, Avila did observe some pilling on the sleeves and at the waist — but pilling will almost always eventually happen with cashmere sweaters and is usually fixable with a fabric shaver .

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Polo Sweater

Quince’s Mongolian-cashmere polo sweater is another one of our best-in-class sweater picks. Avila found herself reaching for it especially frequently during the fall “because it’s breezy and has a somewhat less conventional cut.” She describes it as having the “same lightweight and buttery softness” as Quince’s crewneck and a just-as-good price.

Quince Tencel Rib Maternity & Nursing Button-Front Dress

When Quince released its maternity collection at the beginning of 2023, many styles, including this V-necked button-front dress, sold out within a couple weeks. The brand has since restocked its selection, so this flowy and comfortable dress, which caught our eye for its ’90s-style design, is available in a deep sky blue, heather gray, and black. It’s made from supersoft Tencel, so you can look elegant without sacrificing comfort.

Loungewear and activewear

Quince Washable Silk Pajama Button-Up Top

Given that Quince’s bedding is so beloved, it only seems logical that the brand would also make stellar pajamas . This duo makes up our favorite silk-pajama pant set , and Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo describes its texture to be like “blueberries or grapes early in the morning that have a little frostiness to their skin.” She has found that the separates are temperature regulating, too, helping to hold heat on chilly nights and maintaining a nice airiness on warm ones.

Quince Washable Silk Pajama Short

If silk shorts are more your speed, consider this pair that Strategist writer Ambar Pardilla tested. They’re especially well suited for those who like to show a little leg: Even on her five-foot-two frame, Pardilla says the shorts are “definitely on the cropped side.” But she says the shorts are impressively well made, especially for the price.

Quince French Terry Modal Jumpsuit

Pardilla named this all-in-one the best lounge jumpsuit and the best sleep jumpsuit because it is “supersoft, worn-in, and doesn’t pill in the wash.” She especially likes it for summertime because “without sleeves and with a low V-neck and keyhole in the back, the style is actually pretty airy.” And when she wants to wear it in public, she can adjust the waistband a little higher for a more tailored effect or lower for a “laid-back and looser” look.

Quince Organic Turkish Waffle Robe

Pardilla named Quince’s Organic Turkish Waffle Robe the best waffle bathrobe for its irresistible price tag and light, gauzy texture. But if you’re prone to shivering after the shower, “the robe’s thinness means it’s not the one for you,” she says.

Quince Flowknit Ultra-Soft Performance Biker Short

Quince’s extensive line of activewear spans leggings , dresses , and jumpsuits . When the brand first launched the collection in 2022, this affordable pair of biker shorts caught our attention. They come in seven colors and are partially made from sustainable materials like recycled polyester.

Outerwear and accessories

Quince Responsible Down Puffer Jacket

After testing a number of jackets for our guide to the best parkas , Strategist writer Katherine Gillespie reports that Quince’s down parka is “an almost identical Super Puff dupe,” offering a similar logoless anonymity and minimalist silhouette for nearly half the price. It even has thumbholes, fuzzy pockets, and a removable hood, the latter of which Gillespie says “might actually be an improvement on the Super Puff’s design.”

Quince Luna Polarized Acetate Sunglasses

Quince added sunglasses to its lineup in the summer of 2023 and offers 40 pairs in shapes like a classic aviator and cute cat’s-eye . The glasses feature durable and scratch-resistant polarized lenses and frames made from ecofriendly acetate.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
