Cool Cruiser

Thinking of doing a cruise from LA to Mexico in November. Has anyone done this before and what has the weather been like, particularly at sea along the Baja coast. I'm assuming I can expect hot in CAbo.

We did a Mexican Riviera cruise for Thanksgiving one year and the weather was really nice. Not too hot and humid like it is in the summer, but very comfortably warm. The water was warm too. We didn't make it into Cabo that trip due to high winds and surf, but overall the weather was really pleasant.

It will be warm

Thanks. How were the seas...rough?

Not too bad. There was a front going through that created some wind and high seas, hence not getting into Cabo that time because of concerns about tendering, but on the ship it wasn't uncomfortable.

It can be cool the first day out of LA and the last day coming back.

We did this cruise last Nov and the one before...

The weather was Great....I hate it when its to Hot/Humid and it was Perfect....

Had 1 sea day that was rough coming back but barable....:D.

Because everyone's view of "perfection" is different, can I ask if it was warm enough to lie out in the sun every day, say 80 or warmer?

Perhaps once you get into the waters off Mexico it may be that warm for each of those days. However, heading out of and back into CA waters it may not be that warm. It is difficult to predict. November can be a very warm month in CA, or if the winter storms hit early can be cold and sometimes even rainy. Or it can be cool and foggy with a heavy marine layer almost anytime of year depending on conditions. So there is really no certain answer. I would doubt that in November you will find the temp at 80 degrees or warmer each and everyday of your cruise. Maybe part of the days.

Done this cruise 3 times, once in Oct once in Nov and once in Jan, weather temp is very warm, except first sea and last sea day. All three times the sea was very rough coming back on the last sea day. We once had to skip Cabo, as the captain needed to slow the ship down to 8-12 knots to keep the passengesr comfortable. he needed the extra day to make in to LA in time.

BigBit

That's probably not going to be an issue on this particular cruise as PV and Mazatlan have been eliminated, replaced by a two day stay at Cabo and one day at Ensenada. So if we don't make Cabo, there's gonna be some mighty unhappy cruisers!

Best Time to Cruise to Mexico

Best time to cruise to Mexico

One of the most exciting cruise destinations on earth, Mexico has everything to make your cruise memorable. From rainforests and coral reefs, to ancient ruins and vibrant cities, from world-class food to a fun music scene, the country has it all. If you’re planning a Mexican getaway, however, you might ask yourself what’s the best time to cruise to Mexico. In this post, we’ll answer that for you.

The Best Time to Cruise to Mexico

Similar to other popular destinations in this region, such as the Bahamas and the Caribbean , Mexico enjoys warm weather all-year round. But that alone is not enough to decide on the best time to cruise to Mexico. In fact, there are three main factors you should consider before booking a cruise.

Weather / Seasons

We’ll start with the most important factor—the weather. Mexico’s climate has basically two seasons: a wet and a dry season. Although many cruise lines offer sailings every month of the year, the majority of offerings are during the dry season. That’s the high season, which runs roughly from October through April and has by far the most comfortable weather. As in, the lowest humidity levels. So, if having perfect weather is important to you, visit Mexico in “winter”.

Mexico is best avoided in July and August, which is hurricane season. This comes with torrential rains, strong winds and high humidity. Some restaurants, accommodations and other service may also close for the season in summer. All things considered, November, January, February and March are probably the best time to cruise to Mexico.

Cozumel Sunrise

Peak Crowd Levels

Another thing to keep in mind is that the better the weather, the more people will be there. Especially during major holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s and Easter, Mexico is a hugely popular destination. Don’t expect any quietness around those dates. The high season comes with lots of traffic and expensive flights.

If you’re in need of a quiet holiday, consider visiting in the low or shoulder seasons. Especially May, June and September are recommended in that case. As mentioned above, we suggest that you avoid July and August.

Prices / Availability

Weather and the number of people affect prices significantly. However, counter-intuitively, in Mexico this actually can result in better deals during the high season than in the low season. Unlike most other cruise destinations, the best time to cruise to Mexico and score a deal is during the peak season. Make sure to book well in advance, though, as this is the most popular time of year and cruises do get full.

Note, though, that the shoulder season is also a time of year when you can grab a fantastic deal. Remember to do your research before booking. Compare prices and sign up for newsletters. You can find more tips on how to score a cruise deal in this blog post.

Cozumel Beach

Simply put, the best time to travel to Mexico is from mid-October through April, with perhaps the exception of the crazy-busy month of December . For the absolute greatest weather conditions, November is often said to be the best month to visit Mexico . This is also when the whale-watching season kicks off, and the holiday crowds are still saving up money at home.

Oaxaca City weather is more of a desert-like climate, versus the beaches that are quite tropical. Though a desert, Oaxaca City does have a rainy season which runs from about May to September, so if you visit in November, expect beautiful weather.

The Riviera Maya is located between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, in the Yucatán Peninsula. It is the most posh area in Yucatan, where you’ll find many of the best resorts in Mexico and even the nicest Mexico overwater bungalows .

Given its location, you can expect similar weather to Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen, which is to say it’s on the hotter side .

Of course, you’ll be right on the Caribbean Sea, so you’ll likely have a nice breeze, but you can also jump in the sea to cool off in the afternoons.

🏝 Costa Maya Mexico Weather in November : Located about 3.5 hours south of Riviera Maya, you’ll be in the beach town of Mahahual, Mexico on the Costa Maya. The weather will be similar to Riviera Maya, but the vibe is much more laid back.

8. Playa del Carmen in November

For more information on visiting Playa del Carmen Mexico, check out this Playa del Carmen Travel Guide .

Though some call Playa del Carmen the mini-Cancun, it’s a destination in its own right. Now, to get there, you do have to travel from Cancun to Playa del Carmen (or just “Playa,” as the locals call it), but it’s just a one hour drive.

Once you arrive in Playa, it’s much more of a beach town than Cancun, which is a resort town.

When in the Yucatan Peninsula, don’t miss Chichen Itza Pyramids — one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

For more information on visiting Puerto Escondido Mexico and all the best beaches of Oaxaca, check out this Oaxaca Beaches Travel Guide .

Located on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, Puerto Escondido is the most famous of all Oaxaca Beaches.

It is popular with surfers, artists, backpackers, and solo travelers in Mexico , but there’s really something for everyone in “Puerto,” as the locals call it.

🏄‍♀️ Want to learn to surf in Puerto Escondido? Book some surfing lessons in November, one of the best months for waves in Puerto Escondido.

Some will start in Oaxaca City , then make the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido journey, for a complete Oaxaca state trip. There are so many things to do in Puerto Escondido , however, that you can easily spend your whole trip there.

While you likely won’t have afternoon rain showers in the city, they can happen in Puerto Escondido, especially in early-November. The good news is there’s so many water activities that the rain may not even put a damper on your trip.

When in town, you’ll want to visit the best beaches in Puerto Escondido , like Playa Carrizalillo, Playa Zicatela, Playa Bacocho, Playa La Punta and Playa Puerto Angel.

November is at the beginning of Mexico whale season, so you may even see some whales from the shore. You can also take a Puerto Escondido boat tour out to see the dolphins that hang out near Puerto.

10. Cozumel in November

playa chen rio cozumel | best beaches in mexico

🚢 Planning to take a Mexico cruise in November? Cozumel Island is one of the best Mexico cruise ports, especially for snorkelers and divers.

Cozumel is a Mexican Caribbean island, located about 30 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen . There are also flights to Cozumel, and you can land right on the island at Cozumel International Airport.

It’s also quite easy to travel from Cancun to Cozumel .

Some say Cozumel is the best place for snorkeling in Mexico, and the best place for diving in Mexico as well. Just off-shore, there’s the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, after the Great Barrier Reef.

There are plenty of ways to see the reef, even if you don’t want to swim.

That’s right, the Cozumel Submarine Tour is an unforgettable experience to see these coral reefs in an actual submarine. Cozumel also has beautiful beaches, and Mayan Ruins as well.

You likely won’t get rain when traveling to Cozumel in November.

However, the vast majority of all the best things to do in Cozumel involve being in, on or near the Caribbean Sea, so that makes the (possible) afternoon showers more tolerable.

Weather in Mexico in November: FAQs

What’s the best time of year to visit mexico.

Weather-wise, the best time to travel to Mexico is from November to March.

This is during the dry season, when you’ll see very little (if any) rain, low humidity, and few mosquitoes . This is also the high or busy season in Mexico, when most people visit so they get the best weather.

For travelers who want to escape the crowds, the summer months also give you more bang for your buck.

You can still find cheap flight prices and hotel deals in November, but you have to look! If you want to treat yourself to a fancy resort in Mexico, opt for October over November.

When is the shoulder season in Mexico?

weather on cruise to mexico in november

The shoulder season is a magical time when the weather is still nice, but the crowds have died down, and the prices have as well. It takes place just as the busy season is about to begin, and right after it ends.

For my money, this is the best time to visit Mexico! The Mexico shoulder season includes the months of October to November and April to May; though May is the hottest month in Mexico.

You may still find great Mexico travel deals in other months, but you likely won’t find low prices or small crowds anytime during the busy season.

How hot is it in Mexico in November?

You might want to know, Is it too hot to go to Mexico in November?

This answer is a matter of preference, but in short: It is still quite warm in Mexico in November. If you don’t like tropical weather, Mexico in December will be a much more enjoyable month for you.

❄️ Mexico Fun Fact : The coldest city in Mexico is the small pueblo of Ciudad Madera, Chihuahua, located in North Mexico. Ciudad Madera sees a few inches of snow each year.

Many are surprised that November is still one of the hotter months in Mexico, especially if you’re visiting the Mexico beach towns .

Average temperatures in Mexico in November hover around 85°F (29°C) on the beaches, but it can feel a few degrees hotter because of the humidity.

Is it sunny in Mexico in November?

weather on cruise to mexico in november

Yes — It tends to be sunny in Mexico year-round, even in the Fall season.

Since November is not a Mexico rainy season month, it likely won’t rain at all. In the event it does, just know that even if storms, cloud cover and rainfall rolls in, the sun often comes back in an hour.

What is the average temperature in Mexico in November?

Wondering, Is Mexico hot in November?

Yes — The average weather in Mexico in November is on the hotter side, though it’s not super humid.

If you’re visiting Mexico City and/or Central Mexico, the temperatures cool down considerably at night, but this is not the case on Mexican beaches.

For Mexico beaches , you can expect 87°F days (30°C) and 80°F nights (26°C). With the humidity factored in, it might even feel hotter.

Inland, the cities of Mexico are considerably cooler, so plan for 75°F days (23°C) and 60°F nights (15°C).

If you’re debating on when to visit, know it’s usually much hotter in October compared to November, and more rainy.

Besides temperatures, when comparing Mexico weather in October and November, remember that October is still Hurricane Season, but November isn’t.

When is Mexico Hurricane Season?

colonial town with yellow walls and man on his bike in the street - day trips from Merida

Mexico has about 5,800 miles (9330 km) of coastline, so there’s a lot of places susceptible to hurricanes.

⛈ Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30, so you’re always better off visiting Mexico beaches in November vs October.

You might now want to know, What’s the weather like in Mexico in November right when Hurricane Season ends?

If you’re visiting towards the beginning or end of the month, you may get a small storm, but you have much less of a chance of heavy rains and storms in late-November.

What are the best beaches in Mexico in November?

I come bearing great news because beaches in Mexico all have great weather in November — sunny, warm (but not hot) , with low humidity

In fact, November Mexico weather is perfect in both cities and on beaches, so you’re in for a great trip, regardless of when you’re going.

No matter if you’re headed to the Pacific Coast beaches (Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Escondido and Sayulita ), Caribbean beaches (Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum and Playa del Carmen) or Yucatan beaches (Progreso, El Cuyo) — you’re in for a beautiful vacation.

Best time to see whales in Mexico: Late-November to early-April

weather on cruise to mexico in november

If you are visiting any of the Mexico Pacific beach towns, you must take a boat tour to see some whales

Several species of whales migrate past the Pacific coast during Mexico whale watching season, but the best place to see them is off the coast of Baja California .

Baja California is a peninsula on Mexico’s west coast. It’s home to many of the best beach towns in Mexico, like Cabo San Lucas (Los Cabos), La Paz, Ensenada, Loreto and Rosarito.

If you’re visiting Cabo San Lucas in November, don’t pass up the chance to take these Cabo whale tours .

Should I go to Mexico in November?

Yes — Mexico November weather is ideal, and you can expect sunny, cool days.

If you’re traveling at the beginning of November, you will have nice weather and smaller crowds, though the crowd level picks up considerably in late-November. If your travel schedule permits, opt for early-November.

Can you go to Mexico in November?

Yes — November is one of the Mexico shoulder season months, which many say is the best time to visit Mexico because you get nice weather, smaller crowds, and reasonable prices.

If you have your eye on any posh, 5 Star Mexico resorts, you may even find great deals in early-November.

Are there any major Mexico holidays in November?

Teotihuacan hot air balloon ride

Yes — There’s two big holidays in Mexico in November. In Mexico, November 20 is Día de la Revolución (Revolution Day). On November 1-2, there’s Day of the Dead, which though it’s called “Day” of the Dead, is in fact a multi-day holiday.

As one of the major holidays in Mexico, Día de Muertos is a festive celebration that can almost take over some cities and smaller towns. If you want to attend Day of the Dead Mexico celebrations, arrive a few days early to see the towns setting up.

One of the largest Day of the Dead events is in Oaxaca City, the capital of Oaxaca State .

If you’re attending the Dia de los Muertos in Oaxaca City , try to arrive by October 29. It is truly magical to see the entire town come together to decorate with flowers, ofrendas (altars), and more.

Mexico festivals in November

There’s also the Festival Internacional del Globo , or International Hot Air Balloon Festival , held in Leon, Guanajuato near Guanajuato City . This is the biggest Mexico hot air balloon event in the country.

🎥 Love films? Don’t miss the Los Cabos International Film Festival in November.

Are there mosquitoes in Mexico in November?

Yes — The mosquitoes are at their worst in the Mexico rainy season, but you can still get bit in the dry season.

You’ll want to pack insect repellent, and I recommend this eco-friendly mosquito spray from Repel, or this combo reef-safe sunscreen/mosquito repellent from Bullfrog.

Bullfrog Mosquito Coast Bug Spray Insect Repellent + Sunscreen SPF 50, Pump Spray, 4.7 Fl oz 2 pack

Final Thoughts: Traveling to Mexico in November

If you’re going to Mexico in November, you’ve picked a good month because it’s officially out of both the rainy season and Hurricane Season.

Even if you get a bit of rain, the storms tend to pass quickly, and the sun comes back out before you know it.

🇲🇽 What’s the best place to visit in Mexico in November? In my opinion, Oaxaca for Day of the Dead , and Mexico City would be best. If you like venturing a bit off the beaten path, there’s also Guanajuato City , which has nice weather for Mexico in November.

November is nowhere near as busy as December, which is the busiest month for tourism in Mexico.

In November, technically a shoulder season month, you’ll have nice weather, smaller crowds and reasonable prices — it just might be the best time to visit Mexico!

Why Go on a Cruise Through Mexico?

image4.png

Are you seeking a vibrant and diverse destination with activities suited for all ages and interests? Mexico has you covered, offering a range of experiences from exploring ancient ruins to indulging in local cuisine.

Among the popular activities is a visit to the stunning beaches along the Caribbean Coast, including Cancun and Playa del Carmen. These spots are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, and engaging in various water sports.

Mexico's Seasons And Weather Patterns

If you're thinking Mexico is a perpetual tropical paradise with flawless weather, you're not alone. However, like any destination, there are specific periods in the year when conditions for cruising in Mexico are more favorable than others. We'll guide you through these optimal times for a smoother and more enjoyable cruise experience.

If you're planning a cruise to Mexico, the prime time is during the dry season, spanning from October to April. This period boasts minimal rainfall, creating optimal conditions for enjoying Mexico's beautiful beaches and delving into its ancient history.

With lower humidity levels, inland exploration becomes more comfortable, steering clear of excessive heat or rain-related discomfort. However, it's worth noting that this dry season aligns with the high travel season, resulting in more sunny days and increased prices. We're here to ensure you make the most of your Mexico cruise during these favorable months.

Rainy Season

During the extended and intense rainy season from May to November, Mexico experiences heavy rainfall and tropical storms, even amid warm temperatures. This period sees fewer visitors, translating to favorable prices but also an abundance of rainfall.

On the upside, the rainy season transforms Mexico's landscapes into lush green havens, offering a refreshing break from the usual heat. It's an opportune time to explore the country's jungles, waterfalls, and natural wonders.

However, it's crucial to pack accordingly and stay updated on the weather forecast for a prepared and enjoyable experience. We're here to assist you in navigating Mexico's rainy season with practical tips and insights.

Hurricane Season

In the summer months from June to November, which marks the hurricane season, certain regions in Mexico encounter heightened rainfall, posing challenges for outdoor activities. During this period, elevated humidity levels and the potential for heavy rainfall and strong winds, particularly in the afternoons, are prevalent.

Extended showers, capable of disrupting planned outdoor shore excursions, and persistent high humidity levels can make walking and sightseeing uncomfortable even during dry spells.

Although cruising in Mexico is feasible year-round, these months represent the less favored travel period, characterized by reduced popularity and more affordable prices due to the low season. We're here to guide you through considerations and help you navigate this less frequented but budget-friendly time for cruising.

When Is The Best Time To Cruise Mexico

If you're considering a cruise to Mexico, the warm Caribbean climate is undoubtedly a major draw. The optimal cruising window falls between the conclusion of hurricane season and the onset of summer. Choosing the best time for your Mexico cruise largely depends on your preferences. If you can secure a cruise in February or April, steering clear of the early spring break crowd, you'll enjoy the warmest weather with fewer fellow travelers. We're here to assist in tailoring your cruise experience to match your preferences and maximize your enjoyment.

The Driest Months

If you're aiming for the driest conditions in Mexico, the timeframe varies by region. In broad terms, the pinnacle of the dry season occurs from December to April. This period is optimal for those desiring sunshine, clear skies, and warm water without the threat of rain.

While these months boast cooler temperatures, daytime averages can still reach 82°F. It's worth noting that the best weather often coincides with higher prices, especially if your travel plans align with the Christmas and New Year holidays. We're here to provide insights and assist you in navigating the balance between ideal weather and budget considerations for your Mexico trip.

Quietest months

For a tranquil getaway to Mexico, consider scheduling your trip during the most serene months of the year. Typically, the calmest period to visit Mexico spans from May to late June.

As the peak tourist season concludes, the crowds diminish, offering a peaceful exploration of Mexico's stunning destinations. The weather remains moderate and enjoyable, providing an ideal opportunity to experience the country without contending with hordes of tourists.

While cruise ships may still have their share of passengers, the ports are less likely to experience the record-breaking guest numbers seen during the winter months. We're here to guide you in planning a serene and enjoyable visit to Mexico during these quieter months.

Shoulder Season

Navigating the ideal time for your visit can be a challenge, but savvy travelers often turn to the shoulder season. So, when exactly is the shoulder season in Mexico?

This period falls between the high season (winter) and the low season (summer), typically in late spring and fall. In the shoulder season, you can experience similar advantages as the high season – sunny days and warm weather – minus the crowds and elevated prices. It presents an excellent chance to leisurely explore Mexico's attractions while capitalizing on favorable deals for accommodations and activities. We're here to assist in optimizing your Mexico travel plans during this balanced and cost-effective season.

image5.png

Worst Seasons for Mexican Cruises

No time is inherently unfavorable for a cruise to Mexico, but some periods offer more favorable conditions than others.

The rainy season stands out as the period to steer clear of in Mexico. Although opting for the off-season might seem appealing to avoid peak crowds and potentially secure budget-friendly rates, there are crucial considerations to bear in mind before finalizing your trip.

Throughout the rainy season, anticipate regular afternoon thunderstorms and substantial rainfall. This can hinder outdoor activities and complicate travel plans. Conversely, the tradeoff might be worthwhile for some travelers who appreciate lush green landscapes and a less crowded experience. We're here to guide you through these considerations for a well-informed decision before your booking.

Also steer clear of cruising in Mexico during spring break, a period marked by an influx of young college students flocking to popular beach destinations like Playa Del Carmen and Cancun. This surge in visitors can result in overcrowding.

However, once the spring break season concludes, specifically in late spring (typically at the end of April), becomes an opportune time to visit. During this phase, the departure of students results in fewer crowds, offering a more relaxed experience. We're here to assist you in planning your Mexico cruise during these optimal times.

Sunset Chasers Suggestion

If you're considering a Western Caribbean itinerary to Mexico, target January, February, late April, or May for a chance at lower cabin occupancy.

For west coast sailings, Summer is an ideal timeframe, despite the potential for larger crowds. Notably, there's no need to concern yourself with Hurricane Season on the Mexican Riviera during this period. We're here to guide you through these considerations for a well-informed decision on your Mexico cruise.

Major Holidays And Special Occasions In Mexico

Mexico offers an excellent cruise destination with vibrant holiday celebrations. For an adventurous experience, consider cruising during the first week of November to partake in the Day of the Dead celebration. This lively event, filled with traditional food, music, decorations, and costumes, honors departed loved ones.

In early May, the widespread celebration of Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico's victory over French forces near Puebla. Festivities, including parades, local cuisine, artisan crafts, and live entertainment, take place in both small towns and large cities.

Late fall brings El Grito celebrations on September 15th-16th, remembering Father Hidalgo's call for freedom from Spanish rule in 1810. Independence Day festivities across Mexico include fireworks displays, military parades, and special concerts at various locations.

In early December, witness The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the 12th, celebrating Mary's appearance before Saint Juan Diego in 1531. Throughout the country, religious processions accompanied by vibrant music and decorated floats create a festive atmosphere where traditional songs of faith and hope resonate. As we explore cruise options, these festive holidays offer a unique and enriching experience in Mexico.

Mexican Whale Watching

If you're eager to explore the rich marine life, Mexico stands out as a prime destination. Beneath its waves, you'll encounter remarkable coral reefs, making it an attractive spot for avid travelers.

For an unforgettable experience, Mexico provides unique opportunities to observe majestic whales up close, with the chance to swim alongside them. The peak season for whale sharks is during the summer months of July and August, although they are visible throughout the year.

To swim with whale sharks, you can book a guided tour, ensuring adherence to Mexican laws and regulations for their protection. Despite reaching lengths of up to 10 meters, these are the world's largest fish and are entirely safe. Often referred to as "gentle giants," they feed on plankton and krill, boasting tiny teeth.

For gray whale watching, the optimal time is during winter, from December to April, when these whales migrate from the Arctic to the warmer waters along Mexico's Pacific coast. Key locations for spotting these ocean giants include Baja California, Cabo San Lucas , Puerto Vallarta , and Ensenada . As you navigate the waters, keep a lookout for humpback whales and blue whales, which also grace Mexican waters during specific times of the year. While considering cruise options, these marine wonders promise an enriching experience in Mexico.

What’s the Best Month to Cruise? Pros & Cons of Sailing Each Month of the Year

Let’s get one thing straight right at the start. There is no bad time to cruise . Whether you want to have a summer vacation or a winter getaway, the weather somewhere in the Caribbean is always warm and welcoming.

weather on cruise to mexico in november

That said, with our experiences having sailed seemingly every month on the calendar, we have found there are definite advantages and disadvantages to sailing each month of the year. For example, cruises in August offer the ability to sail when the kids are out of school (meaning entire families can travel together). On the other hand, August is also notorious for hurricanes disrupting travel to Caribbean ports.

As you’ll see below, there are trade-offs with each time of year to sail. No month is perfect. However, many of the potential downsides are manageable in our opinion — and shouldn’t deter you from taking a cruise when it fits your schedule and budget.

Taking a Cruise in January

Pros : We like sailing in January as one of the biggest advantages of cruising this time of year is price. During this time of year school is in session and many people are back at work after a holiday break. That means it’s difficult for many to cruise. Cruise lines typically have discounted rates to fill up the ship in January; the same cruise departing at the height of the busy summer can cost hundreds of dollars more than in January.

As well, when winter has gripped most of North America, the Caribbean still offers a warm getaway with lots of sunshine. It’s a welcome change from the snow and cold see in most areas.

Cons : If you are a family, it might be tough for you to take a January cruise. It will usually mean the kids have to skip a few days of school to take the trip. In addition, if you have to fly in for your cruise, there are chances of winter weather causing delays to your schedule. You’ll want to make sure you plan your flight to arrive the day before your cruise, just in case.

As well, this time of year trips from the West Coast will still be cool and Alaskan cruises don’t start sailing until April/May.

Taking a Cruise in February

weather on cruise to mexico in november

Pros : February offers the same advantages to sailing as you see in January. Fares are normally discounted, with the ability to save hundreds on a cruise by sailing in February versus the height of the summer season. It’s also cold in most of the United States and Canada, making a warm getaway awfully enticing.

Cons : Like January, you might find it difficult to take time off after the holidays to enjoy a cruise. Doing so means spending vacation days early in the year and/or having the kids miss school. There are also still strong snowstorms in many parts of North America during February, meaning it’s possible that getting to the port can be an adventure if you have to fly in for your cruise from a northern city.

As well, even if sailing to the Caribbean, the pools and water on a ship may still be too cool to enjoy fully. Don’t plan on spending much time in the water in our experience.

Taking a Cruise in March

Pros : With warmer weather and Spring Break, a cruise is on many people’s minds come March. In fact, if you are a Spring Breaker, this is a great time to sail as a cruise offers an affordable getaway to the beach without having to worry about flights or hotel. Just hop on the ship and start your vacation.

As well, if you’re headed to the Caribbean, March can be warm — but not too warm compared to the heat of the summer months.

Cons : If you aren’t a Spring Break fan, then this might not be the best month to sail. Cruises — especially shorter trips (3-5 days) — will have a younger crowd and more of a party atmosphere. You’ll also see a spike in prices starting in mid-March as cruise lines raise prices for trips that coincide with Spring Break.

Taking a Cruise in April

weather on cruise to mexico in november

Pros : April represents one of your last chances to get a deal on a cruise before the busy summer sailing season. Discounts and deals are still available up until about mid-May, giving you the chance to save a bundle on a trip compared to sailing just a month or two later. As well, the threat of snow is diminished in northern parts of the United States and hurricane season isn’t here yet for port cities. It’s hard to find better weather than what you get in April.

Cons : After Spring Break, it’s back to school and work for most people. That means many have a tough time taking a trip at this time a year. That’s unfortunate because April is the “Goldilocks” of cruise months for the Caribbean — it features affordable prices, good weather, and is before hurricane season gets cranked up, which always adds a wildcard to travel in the Caribbean.

Taking a Cruise in May

Pros : Heading into May, cruisers hitting the Caribbean can start to experience some warmer weather both at home and on their cruise. While the water and beach are typically warm enough for swimming and laying out even during the coldest winter months, it is a few degrees warmer in May, which can make it more inviting to hit the beach. For example, Cozumel’s average high in January is 83, compared to 91 degrees in May. If you’re the type who loves warm water, May is when things start to heat up.

Cons : If you wait until too late in the month, you’ll start to see higher prices for your cruise. The end of May marks the start of the summer cruising season, and fares start to jump up. One place where you can save? Cruises to Alaska typically start their season in May, and it’s the cheapest month to sail to that region . We’ve sailed Alaska this time of year and highly recommend it.

Taking a Cruise in June

Pros : If you want a summer getaway with warm weather and water, June is a great choice. Hurricane season starts June 1st, but it’s still rare that you’ll have a chance of a hurricane this early. Meanwhile, the Caribbean is starting to heat up so you can have a true beach summer vacation without worrying about it being too chilly either on the ship or in port. Also, with the kids out of school, you can take them on your trip without worrying about absences.

Cons : With schools out of session and the popular summer vacation season, fares spike for June and through the rest of summer. You’ll usually be paying more for the same cruise compared to taking it earlier in the year. As well, if you aren’t the type that likes to cruise with families on the ship, then keep in mind that summer months typically see an influx of kids.

Taking a Cruise in July

Cruise in July

Pros : Like June, you’ll find warm and sunny days filling July. And with the kids out of classes, you’ll have the opportunity to sail without missing school, making it an ideal time to cruise if you are traveling with kids. While it is warm in the Caribbean, regular afternoon “pop-up” showers can help cool things off during the heat of the afternoon. This also represents the height of the Alaskan cruise season, offering the most options (albeit at higher prices) of the year.

Cons : The biggest negative with sailing in July is hot weather. On sunny days, it can get downright hot in many Caribbean ports. If you aren’t used to the heat and humidity, it can be draining. As well, you should start to look out for hurricanes and tropical storms during July — especially if traveling later in the month. While cruise ships will avoid any storms, they can be unpredictable and cause changes to your itinerary.

Also, just keep in mind that you should expect the highest cruise fares of the year during this time.

Taking a Cruise in August

Pros : Consider August the last hurrah if you want to be able to cruise with the kids out of school. While the weather is hot, being able to travel as a family without missing school days is the biggest draw of sailing in this month. If the kids don’t start back until September, then you can sometimes find deals late in the month that can save you considerably on your cruise fare.

Cons : Similar to July, you can run into weather issues in August. Specifically, the heat and humidity is at its worst in the Caribbean during August. While afternoon showers can cool things off, they are not a guarantee. You also have to start worrying seriously about hurricanes. Late August is reaching the peak of hurricane season. While the chances are low that your specific cruise will be hit by a storm (cruise lines steer clears of storms as much as possible), it could disrupt your trip if a hurricane hits a port of call.

Taking a Cruise in September

Pros : With the busy summer cruise season past, students back to school, and summer vacations in the rear view mirror, September offers a “shoulder” season of sorts. While the Caribbean is still warm — perfect for those that want to hit the beach and the water — cruise fares are heavily discounted versus the expensive summer months. In other words, you get the warm weather of the summer with the lower prices of the fall. As well, your cruise is likely to have fewer kids onboard. It’s also the last chance to sail Alaska for the season, when crowds are fewer and fares are generally cheaper.

Cons : September actually marks the peak of hurricane season. Historically, the first week of the month is the busiest for storms and then activity quickly drops off later in the month. Still, even if your ship isn’t directly impacted by a storm, it can cause issues at Caribbean ports.

Taking a Cruise in October

Cruise in October

Pros : If you’re not wanting to deal with heat, then October is a great time to visit the Caribbean. While the humidity is always a factor, October sees the start of a cooling trend in the weather. As well, while hurricanes can occur in October, the season is largely over so you don’t have to worry about them disrupting your trip as much. Finally, cruise prices also fall during this time of year, meaning you can book a solid deal without spending a bundle.

Cons : It shouldn’t be a surprise that April and October are two months that we consider great times to sail. Like April, the biggest con is that it can be difficult for people with kids to travel without taking their children out of school for a few days. Apart from that, the month sees good weather and cheaper fares, and it’s before the harsh winter hits many places in the U.S. and Canada, disrupting air travel to the port or the weather in the port city.

Taking a Cruise in November

Pros : By the time November rolls around, people are starting to think of warmer weather, especially if you live in a cold area. Taking a trip during this month can lead you away from the cold and gray to the warm and blue. It’s also a great time to find cheap cruises, apart from trips that sail during the Thanksgiving holiday (which are more expensive).

Cons : Scheduling around the Thanksgiving holiday can be tough, and if you have to fly to your cruise during the busiest travel time in the United States, it can mean dealing with long lines and delays at airports. Apart from that, November is a great time to book a cruise with cheap deals and nice weather in the Caribbean and The Bahamas.

Taking a Cruise in December

Pros : The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the absolute cheapest times to sail. With many people not looking to travel between these two major holidays, cruise lines slash fares. It’s not unusual to see a trip costing 50% less than a comparable trip during the summer. Needless to say, cruising in December is also a big draw for people wanting to get away from the snow and cold of many places in the north.

Cons : Trying to fit a cruise between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be tough for many schedules. And while many people take a cruise during Christmas itself, those trips are more expensive. If you are traveling by air, be ready for the possibility of delays due to weather and holiday travel crowds.

What Are the Least Expensive Months to Sail?

If you want to sail for cheap, then we suggest looking at months like January, February, April, May, September and October . We find that rates during these months tend to be less expensive than for the same cruise if headed to the Caribbean. During these times fewer people are traveling, leading to generally lower cruise fare.

If headed to Alaska, then the months are more limited. The season runs largely from May through September. In this case the ‘shoulder’ months of May and September offer the lowest prices.

So Which Month Is Best to Cruise?

As mentioned above, there is no “bad” time to sail. However, if we had our pick, we would suggest either April or October if you need to fly into a cruise port . The generally good weather and low prices combine to make it a cheap and easy time to sail.

If you are within driving distance of a port, then you can expand these months to include early winter months and later fall months. Wondering what it’s like to visit Mexico in November? Read on to learn all the best destinations, events, and things to do in Mexico in November!

weather on cruise to mexico in november

If you’re wondering if November is a good time to visit Mexico, my answer is YES!

Of course, I’m not very objective because I think the best time to visit Mexico is any chance you get (and the country really is a year-round destination)… but that aside, November does offer some seasonal perks.

November is shoulder season in Mexico, especially in beach destinations. It’s the perfect time to enjoy great weather in Mexico without the boisterous crowds and elevated prices that come with the peak tourist season, which begins in December. In fact, November is the ideal time to enjoy popular destinations such as Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta , and the Yucatán peninsula with fewer crowds.

If you’re planning to visit Mexico in November, this guide will help you identify the best areas to see, what kind of weather to expect, and how to pack accordingly.

We’ll also go over some of the best things to do in Mexico during the month of November, including events, holidays, and more!

Weather in Mexico in November

Chances are, if you’re planning a Mexico trip in November, it’s because you’re craving sunny days. Because, let’s be honest, in many places, November is the worst month of the year weather-wise.

Fortunately for you, in Mexico, it’s actually the best month!

November marks the end of the rainy season in Mexico and the end of hurricane season in the Yucatan peninsula. October is typically the wettest month in Mexico, but when November hits, the skies clear, the humidity (and tropical storm threats) decreases, and the comfortable winter weather settles in!

On the coasts, the November temperatures are warm but not excruciatingly hot, and humidity levels drop significantly, making it more comfortable still.

In the Riviera Maya on the Caribbean coast, the daily high averages around 85°F with a low of 75°F overnight. In the nearby state of Yucatan, daily highs average around 89°F with lows of 69°F. Over on the Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta temperatures average about 88°F during the day, with lows around 70°F overnight.

In central Mexico and Mexico City, daytime brings comfortable temperatures , around 70°F, with lots of sunshine and low humidity. However, when the sun sinks, a chill settles in, and the average temperature falls to 48°F overnight.

On the Baja Peninsula, November temperatures average around 86°F during the day and 65°F overnight.

As you can see, there are regional fluctuations, but overall, Mexico’s weather in November is mild, with minimal precipitation.

Traveling soon? Don’t forget to buy travel insurance for Mexico. Insurance gives you peace of mind, knowing you can get the help you need if anything goes wrong. SafetyWing is the provider that I recommend.

November Events & Holidays in Mexico

There are all kinds of enjoyable Mexican holidays and events that take place during November. This list is far from exhaustive, but here are a few of the main events you might be interested in checking out.

Dia de Muertos (Nov 1 – 2)

Dia de Muertos is an annual holiday during which families gather to celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. The holiday takes place over two days, from November first to November 2nd.

Though the main celebrations happen on these two days, there are festivities to experience in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Town squares and other public spaces will come alive with artwork and floral arrangements featuring bright orange cempasuchil flowers (we know them as Marigolds), an iconic symbol of this event.

You will see public ofrendas (altars) decorated with prized items, favorite foods, and photos of the departed individuals. Many towns and cities create public ofrendas honoring historical figures or simply celebrating the region they represent. Businesses and organizations will sometimes create their own ofrendas featuring their branding and products.

Where to celebrate:

Day of the Dead is celebrated all over Mexico, but some places have more elaborate festivities than others. Mexico City hosts a massive Day of the Dead parade along Avenida Reforma. Oaxaca , Merida , and Guanajuato are each known for hosting many public events and art exhibitions in the days surrounding the holiday.

In the Riviera Maya , XCARET park hosts a Festival de Tradiciones de Vida y Muerte (Oct 30 – Nov 2) , which highlights the rituals and traditions of Dia de Muertos through art, entertainment, and educational exhibitions. Click here to book your ticket!

Dia de la Revolución (Nov 20)

Mexico’s Revolution Day honors the Mexican Revolution, which was a movement to remove President Porfirio Diaz, who had been in power for over 30 years. The revolution started in 1910 and went on for about ten years.

Each year, the revolution is commemorated with parades and celebrations. This day is a national holiday, and you can expect to see festivities of some sort throughout Mexico. Mexico City usually hosts a large event and parade in the Zocalo.

Feria Yucatan, Merida

The Feria Yucatan takes place each year in Merida. This festival celebrates Yucatan culture and pride and features all kinds of awesome performances and exhibitions. You can expect to partake in carnival games, ride a Ferris wheel, and witness lots of music and dance performances! The Feria Yucatan usually goes on for two or three weeks during November. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for up-to-date information regarding the event.

The San Miguel Jazz & Blues Festival takes place in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, in November each year. This event seeks to highlight national and international musicians and attracts an audience from across Mexico and the world. Performances take place in venues throughout San Miguel, offering the opportunity to enjoy different areas of the city, including bars, theatres, and vineyards!

Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, Playa del Carmen (Nov 25 – 27)

The Riviera Maya Jazz Festival is a widely renowned event held on the beaches of Playa del Carmen each year. This festival began in 2003 and has welcomed many well-known musicians from around the world, including icons like Chick Corea, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Marcus Miller and Armando Manzanero. The festival takes place at Mamitas Beach Club in the heart of Playa del Carmen , an idyllic location for an outdoor festival.

Festival del Vino Mexicano, Guadalajara (late Nov)

The Festival del Vino Mexicano , colloquially known as FEVINO, is a festival celebrating Mexican wine that takes place in Guadalajara each year. At this festival, you can sample vintages from over 50 vendors representing wines from different regions throughout Mexico. There will also be several food vendors, music, and other entertainment as part of the event!

What to Pack for Mexico in November

You’re exact Mexico packing list will vary depending on where you go and which activities you plan to participate in, but here are a few suggestions that are applicable throughout Mexico.

  • Layers: Some areas in Mexico, particularly those with elevation (such as Mexico City), can be pretty chilly in November. Pack some light layers to ensure you don’t suffer. I swear by my light puffer jacket , but a merino base layer , or a light pullover are also good options, depending on your preferences. For beach areas that tend to be much warmer, a pullover or cardigan will suffice.
  • Scarf: A light scarf or pashmina is a clever way to add a little extra warmth to an outfit. Best of all, they go with just about anything. An anti-theft scarf is a clever way to stash your valuables when you’re out and about while also staying warm. Otherwise, any pashmina will do. If you don’t have one, pick one up at a market in Mexico!
  • Anti-theft purse: I cannot overstate how handy an anti-theft purse is in Mexico. Even though you’re unlikely to get pickpocketed, just knowing you’ve taken precautions against it offers a lot of peace of mind. There are all kinds of different anti-theft purses out there, so you just have to find one that suits your style.
  • Sunglasses: Sunnies are essential, there’s no way around it. Splurge for a pair with polarized lenses to cut glare, especially if you’re going to be by the water.
  • Sunscreen: You can purchase sunscreen in Mexico, but it’s harder to find biodegradable brands. In many places, especially in the Riviera Maya, you aren’t even permitted to enter the water in cenotes or coral reefs when you’re wearing traditional sunscreen, so pick up a bottle of reef-safe sunscreen before your trip; here are some recommendations.

Los Cabos is a fantastic Mexico resort destination during November

Best Places to go in Mexico in November

November is one of the best times to visit Mexico, and it’s really hard to go wrong when choosing a destination. That said, here are a few suggestions of where to go in Mexico in November to help get you started with your trip planning.

Puerto Vallarta

November is one of the best months to visit Puerto Vallarta as the weather is really good, and the peak tourism season doesn’t really pick up until after American Thanksgiving at the end of the month. During November, you can expect low precipitation and warm weather. While whale watching season doesn’t pick up until December, November still offers excellent beach weather, affordable prices, and fewer crowds. Check out these awesome things to do in Puerto Vallarta ! [coming soon]

Oaxaca City

Oaxaca City is a popular spot to enjoy the festivities surrounding Dia de Muertos, which takes place at the beginning of the month. On top of that, Oaxaca is a gorgeous, artistic city brimming with exceptional dining experiences, artisan markets, fascinating museums, and several noteworthy historical sites. During November, the weather in Oaxaca is mild and dry, making it perpetually comfortable (and easy to pack). Check out this Oaxaca City itinerary for more ideas on how to spend your time there!

Los Cabos offers incredible scenery, beautiful beaches, and fantastic all-inclusive resorts (and yes, it’s safe! ). November is a fantastic time to enjoy the beginning of the dry season in this region without dealing with crowds and high-season prices. If you’re dreaming of a budget-friendly all-inclusive escape, Los Cabos is a great option during November. There may be a few cool days (but you’ll still be fine in a t-shirt, don’t worry), but they’re a worthwhile compromise if you can beat the crowds.

Riviera Maya

The winter is a fantastic time to enjoy pristine beaches in the Riviera Maya, as the horrible sargassum seaweed usually offers a reprieve at this time. (Though, thanks to climate change, there are no guarantees). This area is less crowded than usual during November while still offering all kinds of exciting activities to enjoy. From the Riviera Maya Jazz Fest to standard attractions like ruins, cenotes , and snorkeling excursions, you’ll love spending time here with room to breathe. Check out these awesome things to do in the area!

Mexico City

Mexico’s capital city is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, but November is no exception. While the average temperatures can be quite nippy in CDMX due to the high altitude, packing thoughtfully will ensure you’re comfortable no matter what the weather does. My Mexico City packing guide will help!

Mexico City is often busy in early November, thanks to the festivities around the Day of the Dead which takes place on November 1st and 2nd (definitely make hotel reservations in advance if you plan to be in the city at this time). You’ll see Dia de Muertos decorations throughout the city, and you can catch the impressive parade along Avenida Reforma held in honor of the holiday!

Day of the Dead aside, Mexico City always has a lot to offer travelers. Explore the Historic Center , browse the museums in Chapultepec Park, take a day trip to the Teotihuacan Ruins, and eat your fill of incredible food! For more ideas, check out my recommended Mexico City itinerary .

Surfing beach in Mexico

Best Things to do in Mexico in November

There are endless activities to enjoy as Mexico’s dry season commences in November. Following are a few top suggestions for your Mexico bucket list if you find yourself in the country at this time of year.

There are great waves to be found in Mexico all year round, but certain spots perform better at certain times of year (which you already know if you know anything about surfing). November is an excellent time for beginner surfers in Mexico because many spots typically known for heavy surf are more mellow at this time of year.

Barra de la Cruz and Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca are good places to look for waves in November . Breaks in Guerrero, Michoacan, and Colima are also good in November, as are some spots on the Baja Peninsula.

Woman crouched on a barren mountain overlooking a lake in Mexico, called Nevado de Toluca

Thanks to the limited precipitation and reprieve from the heat, November is a fantastic time to do some hiking. There are fantastic hikes to be found all over Mexico, whether you want to scale a mountain, trek through the jungle in search of beaches, or simply enjoy an elevated viewpoint.

Head to central Mexico and explore the Itza-Popo National Park , Nevado de Toluca , or Desierto de los Leones . Scout for native birds and exotic plant species in Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve in Veracruz, or trek along the coast near Puerto Vallarta in search of fabulous beaches… The list goes on and on, but the point is there are lots of great hikes in Mexico!

Hit the beach

Mexico’s high season doesn’t kick off until December, so November is a great time to squeeze in a visit to one of Mexico’s beautiful beach towns . If you’re curious about an all-inclusive experience, you can usually score great rates in November since it’s still shoulder season. However, if you’re looking to party, the venues might be a little on the empty side. But, for anyone looking for a laidback, peaceful escape, November is a perfect time!

The best time to go on a cruise

Gwen Pratesi

Sorry to disappoint you, but the best time to go on a cruise is not a fixed week or month, as you might hope. The best time to take a cruise varies based on your travel preferences, including where you wish to travel.

First, you'll need to consider the weather at your destination. The best time of year to visit is typically when warm, sunny days are plentiful and rain is scarce.

If you're not a fan of crowds, you'll want to pass on traveling when everyone else is going during popular vacation weeks. That might mean embracing cooler weather and a little precipitation.

If price is a major factor in choosing the perfect cruise travel date, you'll also want to look at cruises in the shoulder season, when fewer people are traveling and fares are typically lower. However, don't rule out prime travel dates. You might be able to find cheaper cruises on older ships or in less desirable cabin categories, especially if an abundance of ships sails to your preferred destination.

In the end, the best time to cruise may come down to where you can go for the right price when your schedule allows a vacation. We've compiled the best times to cruise to the most popular cruise destinations based on the weather, lowest prices and fewer crowds. However, the decision of when to travel is ultimately up to you.

Best time to cruise Alaska: June-August

weather on cruise to mexico in november

The cruise season in Alaska runs from mid-April to September, with a few cruise lines extending the season into early October. Nearly every month has something to recommend it, depending on what you're looking for.

When to cruise to Alaska for the best weather

If you want to avoid rain, May is typically the driest month, with plenty of sunshine and highs in the 50s. It's a great month for nature lovers to cruise to Alaska because May is when you'll see much of the wildlife emerging, including migrating gray whales, Dall sheep, moose and migratory birds.

If you want to travel to Alaska a little earlier in the season in April, the weather is cool but pleasant, and the nights are still long enough that you may be able to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

July is the height of peak season, with the warmest weather of the year and long daylight hours. It's also the best month for wildlife viewing, especially for humpback whales, brown and black bears and migrating shorebirds and puffins. However, you should know that you'll have to deal with pesky mosquitos in late June and July, especially in the interior part of the state.

Best time to cruise Alaska for low prices

You can usually find the best prices for an Alaska cruise during the shoulder season months of April, May, September and October. For example, starting rates are as low as $603 per person for a seven-night Inside Passage cruise sailing round-trip from Seattle with Royal Caribbean in May 2024. In mid-September, the same itinerary starts at $631 per person. However, by the peak summer season in late June and July, the starting price is $921 per person.

Best time to cruise Alaska to avoid crowds

The shoulder season months are also the least crowded times to visit Alaska because kids are in school and fewer families are vacationing. Just be aware that if you head to Alaska early in the spring, some of the stores may not have opened yet. Arrive in the fall, and you may find that tour operators and shops have begun to cut back hours or have closed.

The advantage of traveling in the shoulder season is that you can experience the towns without the summer crowds and with cooler temperatures. Shoppers can take advantage of end-of-season sales on souvenirs.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas: December-May

weather on cruise to mexico in november

Almost any time of year is a good time to sail to the Caribbean or Bahamas , with year-round sunny skies, warm temperatures and glistening turquoise blue waters.

When to cruise to the Caribbean and Bahamas for the best weather

Some of the Caribbean's nicest weather is in May, at the start of shoulder season. The weather is particularly pleasant in the Southern Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominique, Grenada and St. Vincent, with highs in the 80s and just slightly cooler evenings in the 70s.

January through March also offers picture-perfect weather. January is the beginning of the dry season, so the humidity is lower, and the temperatures are in the 70s and 80s.

Related: Best time to cruise the Caribbean

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas for low prices

Shoulder season in the Caribbean is May through November, the months just before peak season, which is December through April. This is the time when you'll typically find better deals on pricing, especially in May and September to November.

Fares for seven-night cruises in May 2024 are as low as $499 per person on an MSC cruise sailing round-trip from Miami and even less expensive at $399 per person come September.

The official Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to Nov. 30, falls within shoulder season, so you may need to weigh low prices with the risk of a storm affecting your trip. Also, some fares in the summer months can be higher with many families taking vacations. Prices for similar cruises with MSC between June and August range from $649 to $799.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas to avoid crowds

The best time to cruise to the Caribbean without all the tourists is typically in late fall and between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. You can also avoid the crowds in late April and early May after the spring break rush but before school lets out and summer vacations begin.

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean: April-May, September-October

weather on cruise to mexico in november

The cruise season in the Mediterranean usually begins in April and ends in November, with peak season falling between June and September. Some cruise lines also offer sailings into the winter months to southern Mediterranean destinations, such as Egypt, Israel, Morocco, southern Spain and the Canary Islands, because they have warm weather during that time.

When to cruise the Mediterranean for the best weather

The spring (April and May) and the fall (September and October) afford some of the best weather in the Mediterranean, with sunny days and comfortable temperatures. Though the busiest season for Mediterranean cruises is typically July and August, the temperatures can be unbearably hot (85 degrees and higher).

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean for low prices

Look to the shoulder season to find the best deals on Mediterranean cruises. During April and May and September to November, the combination of cooler temperatures, a higher chance of rain and a lack of family vacations leads to more availability and lower prices for cruises.

For example, in May 2023, you can sail on a seven-night Western Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona to Rome with Princess Cruises starting at $699 per person. If you prefer to travel in the fall, you can still find a good deal on the same itinerary for $848 per person in September. In mid-June, the same voyage costs $1,132. Since you'll have the greatest choice of ships midsummer, you might luck out and find a one-off deal if you can be flexible about ship and sail date.

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean to avoid crowds

Lower prices also mean fewer crowds. The height of summer is incredibly busy in the Mediterranean, especially in smaller destinations, including the port towns in the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos and in popular cities in Italy, France and Croatia. The spring and fall are the optimal times to visit, with fewer tourists, cooler temperatures and lower prices. You'll also find that most everything is open during that time and easier to see without battling the crowds.

Best time to cruise Hawaii: June-August

weather on cruise to mexico in november

Hawaii is a year-round destination, but you'll only find one ship that sails the islands throughout the entire year: Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. Other ships sail one-way or round-trip itineraries to the Hawaiian Islands from the U.S. West Coast, typically between September and April.

When to cruise to Hawaii for the best weather

Hawaii has just two seasons due to its tropical climate. Summer is from May to October, and winter falls between November and April. There's not much variation in temperature between the two seasons, with daytime temperatures hovering around 80 degrees in the summer and not falling much more than that into the high 70s in the winter. Since the temperatures are similar during both seasons, the best time to cruise the islands is when there's less chance of precipitation, which is during the summer months of June, July and August.

Best time to cruise Hawaii for low prices

Cruises to Hawaii will be less expensive in the fall when school is in session.

Summer is peak season with family vacations and honeymooners, so prices will be higher then. Expect a lift during spring break weeks, as well. Even though January, February and March bring more rain, the winter months are also peak season for tourists … and whales.

For example, a seven-night round-trip cruise in November or early December 2024 with Norwegian Cruise Line starts at $1,649. The highest fares are in June, at $2,149. January and February fares are as high as $1,949.

If your heart is set on traveling to Hawaii in the summer, or you want to escape the winter's snow at home in February, look for deals with an early booking. You can also take a chance and wait for last-minute specials if you're flexible.

Best time to cruise Hawaii to avoid crowds

Springtime will be the quietest time to visit the Aloha State, although you might find an uptick of families traveling for spring break during March and April. The summer is the busiest time for vacationers, and the winter months bring whale-watching enthusiasts and surfers. There are also two major sporting events in January, so you'll want to avoid the crowds on Oahu and Maui during that month.

Best time to cruise Northern Europe: June-August

weather on cruise to mexico in november

The cruise season is short if you want to sail to Northern Europe, the Baltic or the Scandinavian fjords; itineraries run from April through October. However, if you love the cold and want to chase the aurora borealis in Norway, several lines offer northern lights itineraries in the winter months.

When to cruise Northern Europe for the best weather

The warmest months in Northern Europe are mid-June to August, making the height of the summer season the most desirable time to cruise Scandinavia and the Baltic region. This is also the Land of the Midnight Sun, where you'll have nearly 24 hours of sunlight in places like northern Norway from early June to mid-July.

The two shoulder seasons – from April to early June and September to October – offer comfortable temperatures, but you'll need to dress in layers.

Best time to cruise Northern Europe for low prices

The shoulder seasons may not be the warmest, but they typically offer better pricing than summer cruises. For example, a 14-night sailing to the Baltic with Holland America is $949 in early May 2023 but $1,329 in mid-June.

Best time to cruise Northern Europe to avoid crowds

The shoulder seasons will also have fewer passengers and tourists — and you may even have some attractions to yourself in the cities and towns.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal: December-March

weather on cruise to mexico in november

Transiting the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean is a bucket-list trip for many travelers. Panama and the bordering countries in Central America have a tropical climate with lush landscapes and rainforests, so you can expect wet weather at certain times of the year. The height of the Panama Canal cruise season is between October and April.

When to cruise the Panama Canal for the best weather

You'll find moderate temperatures (in the mid-70s to low 80s) and drier weather in January and February. During those months, it's more pleasant to engage in outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking, which are a highlight when visiting places like Panama and Costa Rica.

December, March and April also offer nice weather, although the rainy season sometimes starts as early as mid-March before continuing through the fall.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal for low prices

It's hard to determine the best time to cruise the Panama Canal at the lowest prices. Many cruise lines offer short seasons or mix up itineraries, so there's not much grounds for comparison. However, if you want a deal, the one thing that's certain is you should not sail over the holidays.

For example, Windstar Cruises ' seven-night Costa Rica and Panama Canal sailings mostly start at $2,299 in February and March 2024 and $2,399 in January. However, its New Year's sailing starts at $2,799 per person.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal to avoid crowds

The Panama Canal cruise season picks up at the end of the rainy season, so you'll find fewer tourists during October and November when the weather is still wet.

To avoid crowds in port, try not to cruise during the Panamanian festivals that take place in early spring and from November into the winter. These festivals can also affect the opening of attractions, restaurants, banks and other venues you might want to visit ashore.

Best time to cruise Mexico: November-May

weather on cruise to mexico in november

The Mexican Riviera (i.e., the Pacific coast of Mexico) is a year-round cruise destination. Most ships sail the itinerary in the fall, winter and spring because those same ships head to Alaska for the summer.

When to cruise to Mexico for the best weather

For the best weather, book your cruise during the dry season, between November and May. The weather can be cool at times along the Pacific coast, so if you're looking for warmer temperatures, you'll need to head to cities located farther south, such as Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.

Best time to cruise Mexico for low prices

The summer months and early fall will have some of the best rates, but you'll need to take into consideration the hotter temperatures in the summer that can reach into the 90s – and with high humidity. It's also the rainy season, and it's possible to have hurricanes during these months.

For example, a seven-night round-trip voyage from Long Beach, California, along Mexico's Pacific coast with Carnival Cruise Line starts at $629 in June. The same cruise is even less expensive in October at $464 per person.

Best time to cruise Mexico to avoid crowds

The dry season is also the quietest time to cruise to Mexico. Family vacations are over, and the kids are back in school. You will, however, want to avoid booking a cruise around the holidays at the end of the year and during spring break (March and early April).

Best time to cruise Canada and New England: September-October

weather on cruise to mexico in november

The cruise season in Canada and New England begins in May and ends in October, with a few ships even making the voyage in April. You'll find more ships in this region between August and October as it gets closer to peak leaf-peeping season.

When to cruise to Canada and New England for the best weather

The summer offers some of the nicest weather, with daytime highs in Boston and New York between 80 and 90 degrees. Along the coastal areas in Maine and Canada, you'll find highs in the 70s in July. Be prepared for cooler evenings.

The summer months are also the best time to see several species of whales off the coast of Newfoundland, including humpback whales.

However, many travelers choose to cruise to Canada and New England specifically for the fall foliage. Peak leaf season begins around mid-September and runs through October. If fall colors are your goal, resign yourself to cooler temperatures on your sailing, especially in the evenings.

Best time to cruise Canada and New England for low prices

For the best cruise deals, look at voyages sailing before August. A seven-night sailing from Boston to Montreal in May 2024 with Holland America starts at $779 per person. A similar seven-night itinerary from Boston to Quebec City in late September starts at $1,279 per person.

Best time to cruise New England and Canada to avoid crowds

You'll have fewer crowds on shore and in the port towns during the shoulder season in the spring when kids are in school and before mid-September, which is the beginning of peak foliage season in Canada.

Summertime is busy in Canada and New England because of the optimal weather and family vacations. You can also expect more ships and crowds in town during late September and October at the height of the leaf-peeping season.

Best time to cruise Bermuda: April-June

weather on cruise to mexico in november

Bermuda's cruise season runs between April and November, with a few ships calling on Royal Naval Dockyard in December. While the pink-sand beaches and glistening, turquoise waters offer a slice of paradise, the archipelago in the western North Atlantic Ocean does not stay warm year-round. The subtropical climate of these British islands has winter temperatures that dip down into the low 60s and high 50s.

When to cruise to Bermuda for the best weather

April is one of the best months to sail to Bermuda as the temperatures are pleasant and in the 70s, and it's one of the driest months of the year, along with May. May and early June are great options for cruises to the archipelago, and you can expect highs in the low 80s by June.

July and August are the hottest months with high humidity, but it's a great time to hit the beach with water temperatures around 81 degrees.

Best time to cruise Bermuda for low prices

April through early June and September to November are typically when you'll find the cheapest prices. Norwegian Cruise Line has a seven-night itinerary sailing round-trip from Boston in April that starts at $779 per person. The same itinerary is $979 in June and $1,019 per person in July.

Best time to cruise Bermuda to avoid crowds

If you want the beaches to yourself, book a cruise in April. Even though there are festivities during the month (including Easter and the Peppercorn Ceremony), it's still early in the tourist season.

By late spring, summer and fall, there are more festivals, sporting events and golf tournaments that bring visitors to the islands. In the summertime, you'll have family vacations and people with vacation homes in Bermuda returning for the season and warmer weather.

Best time to cruise Australia and New Zealand: December-February

weather on cruise to mexico in november

The height of the cruise season in Australia and New Zealand begins in early October and runs through the end of April because these months are spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere. You will find a few lines sailing an extended season Down Under.

When to cruise to Australia and New Zealand for the best weather

The summer months of December through February offer some of the best weather for cruising in Australia and New Zealand. Major cities will have high temperatures in the 70s and 80s during that time.

In Australia, summer is the perfect season to enjoy the country's beautiful beaches, especially in the south near Sydney. However, if you plan to head north to destinations like northern Queensland, know that summer is that region's wet season. Most days are sunny, but you'll likely encounter an afternoon or evening storm.

In New Zealand, summer brings long, sunny days with mild evenings. New Zealand's beaches are also a top attraction in the summer, along with outdoor activities and water sports.

Best time to cruise Australia and New Zealand for low prices

Look for the best prices during the shoulder seasons, from September to November (spring) and from March to May (fall). Avoid the December holidays when prices can be high.

For example, Celebrity Cruises has an 11-night cruise sailing round-trip from Sydney in March for $1,320. As you get closer to the holidays in December, a 13-night round-trip itinerary from Sydney with the line costs $2,231.

Best time to cruise Australia and New Zealand to avoid crowds

The shoulder seasons, when temperatures are warming up or cooling off, are a less busy time to cruise Australia and New Zealand and offer slightly lower fares.

If you don't enjoy big crowds with lots of partying, avoid a cruise to Australia during the New Year's Eve festivities, as it's one of the busiest times of year for tourists, especially in Sydney. Australia Day celebrations can also draw crowds, so be aware if your itinerary includes that January holiday.

Norwegian Cruise Line passengers were stranded on a small African island after missing a deadline to re-embark

  • A couple says they were stranded on an island after missing their cruise ship's boarding time.
  • They were on a tour of São Tomé and Príncipe with six others, per US local media. It overran.
  • The stranded group flew to Gambia on Sunday, hoping to catch the ship at another port.

Insider Today

A couple says they were stranded on a small African island after they missed a cruise ship 's boarding deadline, according to local media.

Jay and Jill Campbell, from Garden City, South Carolina, described their ordeal with a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in an interview with WPDE, their local ABC affiliate.

Norwegian confirmed to Business Insider that they were denied boarding, saying it was their responsibility to be on time.

The Campbells said they were frequent cruisers, embarking on Norwegian Dawn on March 20 for their third voyage with the cruise line in a year.

However, an excursion last Wednesday with six other people to São Tomé and Príncipe , an island nation of some 220,000 people off West Africa, took an unfortunate turn.

The couple says the tour overran, and its operator informed the captain that eight passengers were running late.

They were refused entry to the ship upon their return, according to WPDE, even though they could still see the ship from the shore.

The ship was anchored, Jay Campbell said, but the captain refused to let them board despite repeated calls and emails by the passengers to the ship and the cruise line's emergency hotline.

The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard even took the passengers to the ship, but they weren't able to get on and had to turn back, WPDE reported.

In total, WPDE said that nine passengers were not allowed to reenter the ship, including four elderly people and one person who is a paraplegic.

The Campbells told the news outlet that the ninth passenger was late for another reason — an 80-year-old woman who got a concussion on the island and was hospitalized there.

Related stories

Most of the stranded passengers didn't have their medication or working credit cards, WPDE said.

The Campbells, who had a working card, said they covered $5,000 worth of expenses for the group in food, toiletries, and hotel bills.

"We have never had an experience like this before," Jill Campbell told WPDE.

The Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement provided to BI by email that eight guests on the tour missed the last tender back to the vessel.

The cruise line said the passengers missed the "all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time." It said it was a "very unfortunate situation" but that passengers were responsible for being on time.

It added that the deadline to return was "communicated broadly" over the ship's intercom, in printed communications, and on posts shown at the exits of the ship.

The elderly passenger who was concussed was returned to the US, where she has made a "safe return," a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said.

According to WPDE, the group flew to Gambia on Sunday, hoping to rejoin the ship at another port.

A spokesperson for the cruise line said that the ship could not safely dock in Gambia due to adverse weather conditions, adding that efforts are being made for the guests to rejoin the ship in Senegal on Tuesday.

Though cruise ships need to stay punctual, ruined-vacation stories like this are a reputational risk and might put people off.

For instance, two MSC Splendida passengers were stranded last summer at an Italian port after arriving too late for departure.

A TikTok video showed the couple waving and begging the crew to wait for them, even though the gangway appeared to have already been removed.

Other passengers may face the stress of becoming stranded in remote locations through no fault of their own. Last September, more than 200 people got stuck in a remote part of Greenland after their cruise ship ran aground.

And last November, passengers were stranded at a Brisbane port after a Royal Caribbean ship was overbooked.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.
