Roads to close for Tour la Nuit and Tour de l'Ile this weekend in Montreal

Cyclists will be in the spotlight and on the streets in Montreal this weekend.

Thousands of them will be taking part in the Tour la Nuit, on Friday, and the Tour de l'Ile, on Sunday, to officially launch the cycling season. Motorists, meanwhile, will have to plan their journeys in the north of the city.

"The Festival Go Vélo is really a celebration where cycling takes centre stage," says Jean-François Rheault, President and CEO of Vélo Québec, which organizes the festival.

The Tour la Nuit is "really a party," added Rheault.

The event starts at 8 p.m. on Friday. Cyclists will be invited to pedal 24 kilometres through streets closed to traffic for the occasion, dressed in their best luminous accessories.

"There's a feeling of happiness to be able to ride through the city without interacting with cars. There's a real feeling of safety and freedom. There's a very peaceful side to the idea of just being able to discover the city," said Rheault.

The Tour la Nuit route will start in Maisonneuve Park at the corner of Rosemont Boulevard. Cyclists will pass through the boroughs of Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie, Saint-Michel, Montréal-Nord and Saint-Léonard.

The Festival Go Vélo used to start at Parc La Fontaine in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough.

The organization decided to move the event this year because of the heavy traffic on the approaches to the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, caused by work on the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel.

Vélo Québec expects around 20,000 people to take part in the Tour la Nuit, and around 18,000 in the Tour de l'Ile.

The 38th Tour de l'Ile de Montréal will be held on Sunday June 4. The emblematic event offers cyclists a 47-kilometre ride through the streets of the city, which will be inaccessible to motorists. The event will also start in Maisonneuve Park at 9:15 a.m.

tour de l'isle map

Tour de l'Ile participants will pass through seven Montreal boroughs: Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie, Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension, Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Montréal-Nord, Rivières-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles, Anjou and Saint-Léonard.

For the more athletic, alternative routes of 53, 75 or 99 kilometres will be available. However, these routes will include streets open to motorized traffic. There will be no official start for these "discovery" routes, and cyclists will set off at their own pace from 7 a.m.

"It's a party, yes, but it allows people to experience the city from a different point of view, and sometimes to surpass themselves," said the Vélo Québec president.

Both activities will also end in Maisonneuve Park. DJs, inflatable games and other activities will entertain young and old alike.

"There will be a return of the Ferris wheel, which we left out during the pandemic. It's really going to be a festive site," said Rheault.

Cyclists wishing to take part in these events can still register on the Vélo Québec website or complete their registration on the day. Children aged 12 and under can take part in the event free of charge.

RESTRICTIONS FOR MOTORISTS

Motorists will need to plan their journeys if they intend to travel in the north of the island of Montreal on Friday evening or Sunday.

Vélo Québec invites the public to consult the map of the cyclists' route, or to use the Waze application, where the cyclists' route will be indicated.

During both events, Autoroute 40 and Sherbrooke Street will be open to traffic, as will Saint-Michel Boulevard, Autoroute 25 and Autoroute 15.

"There really are options for getting around, you just have to be a little better prepared," said Rheault.

In case of rain, we invite you to attach your bib to the handlebars of your bike using tie-wrap fasteners.

Tips and tricks for a more enjoyable ride Before you leave, here are a few tips and a checklist of things to bring on Tour day. Checklist : your bib; some snacks or a picnic; sunscreen; raincoat; ID; your water bottle. Thank you for helping us ride in an environmentally responsible manner.

A bike in good condition

Before setting out, make sure your bike is in good condition: tires well inflated; components well adjusted and well oiled (brakes, chain, derailleur, etc.); accessories well attached to the bike (rack, basket, bottle cage, pump, etc.).

Fuel for the road

Start the day with a good breakfast. During the ride, drink regularly and eat snacks. If you want to have a picnic, plan for it.

Comfortable clothing

Bring rain gear and a windbreaker. Put everything in a plastic bag, to be slipped into a bicycle bag, basket or bag that is securely attached to the luggage rack. Avoid backpacks.

Tips on the road and services provided Riding among many cyclists during the Tour de l’Île de Montréal requires a minimum of caution. Traffic generally flows smoothly, but slowdowns can occur. Cycle at your own pace and watch out for imperfections in the road. In the event that volunteers ask you to yield to pedestrians wishing to cross the streets, or to an emergency vehicle, please be courteous.

Signal your intentions

Using your arm or voice, signal your intention to stop, turn or pass (always from the left). If you want to stop, avoid sudden stops. Clear the way and pull over to the side of the road.

Protect your head

Wearing a helmet is recommended. A well-fitting helmet does not slip on the forehead or neck; the front and rear straps meet and the chin strap is not too tight.

If you ride under the rain

Brake efficiency decreases. Ride slower and allow more distance to stop. If it rains heavily, it’s best to take cover and wait.

If you ride with a child

Is the child in a seat or trailer? Securely fasten the straps and protect the child’s head with a helmet. Stop at serviced access points to stretch their legs. Wear sunscreen, bring a raincoat and don’t leave anything in their hands (bottles, toys, etc.).

Does the child have their own bike? If they are under 14, they must be accompanied by an adult. Make sure they have identification, a snack and the phone number of a parent or friend (on the inside of their bib). Indicate the Infobike booth as a meeting point at the serviced access points.

To plan your route to the start

From the Tour de l’Île Google map below:

1 – Click on the access point at the corner of avenue du Parc and avenue Mont-Royal;

Jean-François Rheault, the president and CEO of event organizer Vélo Québec, said he senses “great enthusiasm” from the public. The event was cancelled in 2020 and the number of participants was limited to 9,000 in 2021.

This year, he said, organizers expect more than 15,000 participants.

The Tour la Nuit, which took place Friday evening, attracted more than 18,000 people, Rheault said.

“People were really happy to be able to do it as a family, grandparents with grandchildren,” he said. “For many people, it’s a tradition.”

Anyone who wants to get around Montreal between 8:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday other than on a bike should plan their route, Rheault said. Vélo Québec has posted a map of street closings on its website at velo.qc.ca . The organization has also partnered with the Waze app to provide real-time information on traffic conditions.

“What is really the most interesting for us with the Tour de l’Île is really the families and the children, the smiles, the people who are happy, who are there to celebrate,” Rheault said.

“It’s really a party … accessible to everyone.”

The event costs $50 for an adult and $10 for teens age 13 to 17 years old. Children 12 years and younger can participate free.

The Tour de l’Île makes it possible to “experience the city on a human scale in a festive atmosphere to reclaim public space” away from the noise of cars, Rheault said.

“All these people in the streets to celebrate cycling, it’s really a unique moment.”

Riding a bike in the city can be intimidating for many, he said, so cycling on a closed circuit can help build confidence.

The Go Bike Montréal Festival included a daytime, one-way, 36-kilometre, no-cars route on Sunday, also known as the Tour de l'Île de Montréal. It drew about 19,000 participants, snarling traffic in the city.

"The event is such a celebration of safe cycling all around the city. Open streets, open for people of all ages," said Jean-François Rheault, president of Vélo-Québec, the organization behind the event.

"Being together, doing it as a group, you know, that's what people have been waiting for."

Roads were closed from about 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Participants needed to register and pay in advance to participate, but the event — which is not a race, but instead a tour of the city — was open to all ages.

Participants were encouraged to complete the loop at their own pace, finishing and starting from the same place. There was no specific starting or finishing point, but instead three access points for participants to enter — La Fontaine, MacDonald or Angrignon parks.

The three parks offered toilets, water, handwashing stations, information and first aid for the cyclists.

As part of the festival, there's also Tour la nuit, a 22-kilometre route through four boroughs, which took place from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m Friday. About 18,000 participants took to the streets.

Along with permanent employees and contractual workers, there were some 1,750 trained volunteers involved in bringing the festival to life.

The Tour de l'Île was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. It was revived in 2021, but later in the season than usual. Traditionally, the event is held in June.

"We're very happy to welcome everyone," said Rheault before the event.

The festival attracts people who may be cycling on Montreal streets for the first time, enjoying the safety of closed streets, he said. It may also be the farthest a participant has ever ridden a bike at one time, he added.

Cycling is often a simple solution to complex problems such as the need to reduce traffic, get exercise and improve the environment, he said.

Montreal has made a lot of progress when it comes to improving bike paths and safety, "but we need better infrastructure to bring this to the next level," said Rheault.

The Biosphère is set proudly in the middle of the St. Lawrence Seaway, on Île Sainte-Hélène, and has been emblematic of Montréal since the 1967 Universal Exhibition. Its geodesic dome stems from the creative mind of famous architect Richard Buckminster Fuller, one of the fathers of contemporary environmental thought. At the time of designing the Biosphère, Fuller already had it in mind to shine human genius as the foundation of a respectful cohabitation with nature on our one and only "spaceship," as he liked to call Earth.

Even today, these themes link all of the museum's activities, whether through a number of exhibitions and artistic installations that invite dialogue between science, culture, social innovation and the environment. As the Biosphère is part of the Espace pour la vie museum complex, curious minds will be able to better understand the major contemporary environmental issues and discover solutions to tackle them.

Erected in a true oasis of nature, Parc Jean-Drapeau, this pioneer building in sustainable architecture offers a breathtaking view of the city centre and the St. Lawrence River. The Biosphère has much more to offer, however, including a panoramic belvedere (could be closed during winter or in bad weather condition), a colourfully illuminated structure at night easily seen from the city and beyond, a green wall, an interior garden and multiple green roofs.

Tour de l'Isle

The tower is the only remaining vestige of Grenoble's medieval fortifications still visible today. They were built from 1374 onwards to protect the old town of Isle.

The Tour de l'Isle, which is part of the museum, is 30 meters high and has machicolations. It was built in 1381. Completed in 1418, it was used as a town hall and then as an arsenal. This massive and rectangular building, topped by machicolations, remains above all a defensive building of rudimentary conception. However, it soon became the venue for meetings of the City Council and the municipal archives, including the famous chain book. This book contained the charters, liberties, privileges and franchises of the city of Grenoble and was attached to the wall with an iron chain to prevent theft. The Isle Tower was thus in a way the first city hall.

As soon as he arrived in Grenoble, in 1591, the Duke of Lesdiguières requisitioned the tower and transformed it into an arsenal while he built a military citadel around it, of which two sections of walls with short loopholes and an elegant watchtower still remain in the immediate vicinity, at the corner of the Jongkind quay and the Place Lavalette. It was at this time that the flat mullioned windows that can still be seen on the tower's facades were built. Since 1994, the tower is linked by a modern footbridge to the Grenoble museum, of which it is an extension.

The lighthouse on Île Sainte-Hélène is a silent witness to Montreal’s evolution since the early 20th century.

It was decommissioned around 1959, I believe, when the Seaway opened. Since then, all of the equipment has been removed, but the tower remains fairly intact. In its abandoned state, however, it is slowly deteriorating.

I propose that it be restored, and that a lighting-design dialogue be created between it and the Clock Tower in the Old Port.
