Much of the buildings here date back to the time period between 1820 and 1910.

Many of them are dual buildings, with both commercial and residential purposes true to early merchant success in the district.

Comprising 12 blocks of buildings, the Oregon District is a joy to explore.

It’s quaint, charming, and surprisingly quiet.

As you walk, you’ll see coffee houses, clubs, pubs, shops, and cafes galore.

The hip modernity of the current district doesn’t take away from its obvious history, etched into every structure you see.

Wright Company Factory

Wright Company Factory

25 Best Things to Do in Dayton (Ohio)

Known as the birthplace of aviation, Dayton’s aviation culture is one of its largest draws. However, there are tons of other things to do in this Ohio city, that deserve a spot on your itinerary.

So, if you’re coming from another, larger Ohio destination to check out one of the aviation-related attractions, extend your stay and hang out a while. You may be surprised at all the great things you find!

Let’s explore the best things to do in Dayton :

1. The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center

The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center

Of course, you do have to at least get the main aviation attractions on your itinerary.

Start at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, a National Historic Landmark where the Wright Cycle Company on South Williams Street was located.

Did you know, by the way, that the Wright Brothers weren’t always airmen…they actually were in the printing business? This center shows you their early lives, and also the life of their friend, high school classmate and poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The free attraction is open Wednesday-Sunday, during normal business hours, and features film and exhibits.

2. Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center

Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center

Thought you had to go to Kittyhawk to see where the Wright brothers flew? Not quite! You can stop in at this huge (84 acres) field where the brothers actually started perfecting their flight skills, using the third iteration of their plane, the Wright Flyer III. This was actually the first practical airplane in the world.

This spot is owned by the U.S. Air Force and the National Park Services, so admission is totally free, and it’s also open during the same hours as the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center.

3. The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site

The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site

Okay, let’s take a step back from the aviation history (but only for a second, and not too large of a step) and revisit the Wright brothers’ friend mentioned above, Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Dunbar was the first internationally acclaimed African-American poet, and he had a huge influence on many of the African American writers we know and love today, such as Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou.

Born to former slave parents in 1872, Dunbar catalogues the various challenges facing African Americans in a post-Civil-War world.

Dunbar didn’t live very long, dying at age 33, but during his very short life, he was able to publish more than 400 poems, six novels, some plays, short stories and even lyrics for musicals.

4. John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center

John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center

Now, if you actually want to see the 1905 Wright Flyer III (which, is the only plane to earn status as a National Historic Landmark), then you have to go to the John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center.

In addition to this gorgeous airplane, you’ll also see a replica of the Wright Brothers bicycle shop, one of their actual bicycles and then the various tools they used when they were designing their plane. Plus, you can see the camera that took the iconic photo of the first flight.

5. Hawthorn Hill

Explore Hidden Gems in “Gem City” | 33 Unique Things to Do in Dayton Ohio

Whether you’re planning a staycation or vacation, our comprehensive list of things to do in Dayton Ohio can get you started.

Renowned as the birthplace of aviation, Dayton is the sixth-largest Ohio city. As such, it has dozens of attractions — parks, museums, and entertainment centers. Also, the city is full of fantastic restaurants and a growing craft brewery scene.

If you aren’t a resident, exploring all the things to do in Dayton Ohio that interest you will probably take a few days. Fortunately, there are several lodging options available too, if you’re looking for more than just a day trip from Columbus .

But before we get to the best things to do in Dayton, it doesn’t hurt to get familiar with the city…

A Brief History of Dayton Ohio

In 1796, 12 settlers referred to as the Thompson Party founded Dayton after traveling up the Great Miami River from Cincinnati. The group landed at the now named St. Clair St. where two Native American camps were established. The following year, Mad River Rd. was laid out and was the first overland connection between the city and Cincinnati.

It wasn’t until 1803 that Ohio was admitted into the Union, and Dayton wasn’t incorporated as a village until 1805. Then, it took until 1841 for it to become an official city.

The name of the city came from Jonathan Dayton, an American Revolutionary War captain who signed the Constitution and owned a lot of land in the area. Construction on the Dayton-Cincinnati canal started in 1827 to improve the transport of goods between the cities and boost economic growth.

Dayton Ohio Nickname: Gem City

Most people in the Miami Valley will know that Dayton Ohio’s nickname is “Gem City”, but do you know why Dayton is called the Gem City?

27 Best Spring Things to Do in Ohio

Historians link Dayton’s nickname “Gem City” back to August 1845 when a reporter from the Cincinnati Chronicle gave the city praise for its recent improvements:

“…it can be fairly said that Dayton is the gem of our all interior towns; it possesses wealth, refinement, enterprise and a beautiful country.”

Within a few years of the article’s publication, Dayton businesses began to use the phrase “Gem City” in their names, cementing it as the town’s official nickname.

Dayton Innovations

The manufacturing business started booming in 1884. James Ritty’s National Manufacturing Company made the first mechanical cash registers and helped shape the city’s reputation as a manufacturing epicenter in the early 1900s.

An engineer at the company helped develop the first electric cash register in 1906. Additionally, the company helped develop a code-breaking machine for the U.S. Navy, which assisted with cracking World War II’s Enigma machine cipher.

Furthermore, Dayton has been the home of many other inventions and patents. In particular, it’s where Wilbur and Orville Wright constructed and demonstrated the first powered flight. Even though the first actual flight occurred in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the brothers built and improved the Wright Flyer at Huffman Field near the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Current Growth

Currently, Dayton is continuing to expand its downtown area, which started in the 2000s and has helped encourage growth. For example, Day Air Ballpark is the home of the Dayton Dragons and was built in 2000.

New parks have been added to the Five Rivers MetroParks, the Schuster Center performing arts was opened in 2003, and a large health network has been expanded. The Greater Downtown Dayton Plan focuses and continues to focus on improving collaboration, housing, recreation, infrastructure, and job opportunities.

Now, let’s get to the list of the best things to do in Dayton Ohio. Some of these are unique attractions that aren’t common in other Ohio cities, so don’t miss out!

Sharing is caring!

Most people who are thinking about the best things to do in Dayton, Ohio can come up with one or maybe two top attractions. But as recent Ohio transplants, we’ve been so excited to find great new options in the Miami Valley every time we visit! We have visited all of the Dayton attractions listed in this article since 2019 and look forward to adding more as we return.

At just an hour from Columbus and even closer to Cincinnati , it makes an easy day trip or a fun overnight (we’ve done both, and I also visited family in the area many times as a kid). Hopefully this article will inspire you to explore more fun things to do in Dayton, Ohio!

Best things to do in Dayton, Ohio

If you’re trying to figure out what to do in Dayton, Ohio start with these great options. There’s a wide range of attractions Dayton, Ohio, particularly for those interested in aviation, history and nature. Realistically there’s no way you can visit all of these wonderful things to do in Dayton OH in just a weekend, so pick your favorites and plan accordingly!

National Museum of the US Air Force

places to visit dayton ohio

Every list of the top things to do in Dayton starts with the National Museum of the US Air Force, often simply called the Air Force Museum. It’s the largest military aviation museum in the world. One of my earliest memories from my toddler years is acquiring a red inflatable airplane flown by Snoopy and Woodstock in the Museum gift shop!

More than three decades later, I realize that the museum has plenty to offer beyond the store. We’ve been to several aviation museums around the country, and nothing beats this one. You can easily spend 4 hours at the museum without seeing everything, so allow plenty of time.

Some of the coolest highlights include the collection of Air Force One planes that you can walk through and the newer space-focused installations that have interactive stations. Don’t miss the National Aviation Hall of Fame, which is full of world-class items thanks to Ohio’s prominent role in flight, both close to Earth and in space.

Perhaps the best part is that museum entry is totally free! Add-on experiences like the IMAX theater charge an additional fee, but overall this is by far the best free thing to do in Dayton.

If you’re very interested in military aviation history, be sure to visit the Glenn Curtiss Museum in the Finger Lakes

Carillon Historical Park

places to visit dayton ohio

Carillon Historical Park is part Dayton museum, part living history center and part Ohio aviation museum. Taken together, it can make for a fun outing!

The Carillon Historical Park open air museum covers about 225 years of Dayton history on its 65 acre campus. It’s located south of central Dayton along the Great Miami River.

The largest building is the Kettering Family Education Center. Highlights for us include the massive indoor Dayton-themed carousel, displays of hundreds of beautiful cash registers made by National Cash Register Company and a selection of locally-made antique toys (apparently there’s an entire book about the industry!).

Aviation buffs will want to spend time in the Wright Brothers National Museum. There’s a re-creation of the Wright Cycle Co that includes talking status who tell some Wilbur and Orville Wright stories while visitors check out the old workshop. The museum’s centerpiece is the 1905 Wright Flyer III, which was a critical step toward modern aircraft.

places to visit dayton ohio

Some of the most unique fixtures of Carillon Park are historic buildings from greater Dayton that have been moved to the site. They date back to the Newcom Tavern of 1796, which was fascinating to sit in and learn about! Perhaps the most interesting (in my opinion) is the WAVES cabin that was home to a team of women doing classified code-breaking during World War II. It’s so cool to learn about and honor this very important piece of Dayton history! At some times of the year (at least in “normal times”) you may even find costumed interpreters in the buildings to introduce you to Dayton live in a bygone era!

Pro tip: If you’re planning to visit many of the aviation-related things to do in Dayton Ohio, be sure to pick up the “Wilbear” Wright Aviation Trail Passport !

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

places to visit dayton ohio

The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park has a huge name to go along with its hugely important sites: it encompasses the excellent Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center in downtown Dayton, the adjacent Wright Cycle Shop, Huffman Prairie flying field and visitors center, the Paul Laurence Dunbar house and Carillon Park discussed above.

Whew, that’s a lot! And would you believe that these are (almost) all free things to do in Dayton?

places to visit dayton ohio

These important Dayton historical sites and are spread around the city, so it doesn’t necessarily make sense to visit them all together. We have explored most of them and the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center is a particular favorite. You can check out the park film that recounts the Wright brothers’ history and involvement in aviation, visit a replica Dayton dry good store with talking mannequins conversing about issues of the day, see a full-scale replica of the 1902 Wright flyer and then head next door to check out the historical and interactive exhibits at the Wright Cycle Shop.

places to visit dayton ohio

Note that the Wright Brothers National Museum is part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP, but there’s no way to visit without paying admission at Carillon Park.

If you’re interested in exploring Huffman Prairie, which also has an Interpretive Center, I recommend that you stop by there before going to the Dayton Air Force Museum – they’re just 10 minutes apart, both northeast of downtown Dayton. Paul Laurence Dunbar House, a National Historic Landmark, is right near downtown and just a 10 minute drive from the Boonshoft, SunWatch and Carillon Park.

SunWatch Indian Village/Archeological Park

places to visit dayton ohio

Our most recent sojourn brought us to SunWatch Indian Village and Archeological Park. I’m going to be honest and say that I’m absolutely shocked that most Ohioans don’t know that this National Historic Landmark is here 10 minutes from downtown Dayton. If you haven’t visited, put this Ohio hidden gem on your list ASAP.

places to visit dayton ohio

SunWatch is part archeological excavations site and part reconstruction of the village inhabited by the Fort Ancient people 800 years ago. You’ll be able to see recreations of both family dwellings and the communal “Big House” that was important to both daily village operations as well as annual ceremonies. This reconstructed Native American village is located along the Great Miami River south of central Dayton OH.

places to visit dayton ohio

There is also an excellent museum on site that contextualizes the site within the history of Ohio’s native peoples and teaches visitors some of the important nuts and bolts of how the archeological research is done. A wonderful display showcases cultural elements of the Fort Ancient people.

Most visitors will stay at SunWatch for about an hour. It’s so close to downtown that it’s easy to combine with other top Dayton attractions like Carillon Park and Cox Arboretum.

Aullwood Garden MetroPark

places to visit dayton ohio

Aullwood Garden MetroPark in Englewood is something of a hidden gem, and it’s absolutely lovely. Most visitors start in the parking lot and walk the flat, packed dirt path to get to the park’s centerpiece: the 1920 Arts & Crafts style home of Mary and John Aull.

While you can’t typically enter the home to tour it, the surrounding gardens are incredible in the spring! This is one of the best free things to do in Dayton OH for visitors of all ages. The one mile nature trail is a very easy walks but undeniably charming, with a babbling brook flowing over a small waterfall, blooming flower and towering trees.

Be sure to pack a picnic to enjoy before or after your visit, as there are several nice tables in the parking lot adjacent to the creek.

Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm

places to visit dayton ohio

Not to be confused with Aullwood Garden MetroPark next door, Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm is a private garden that does require an admission fee. It’s still a lovely place to visit! There are frequent programs and educational opportunities, and the opportunity to get up-close with farm animals is a hit with young kids.

The biggest draw to Aullwood Audubon right now is the presence of three massive troll statues built by Danish sculptor Thomas Dambo, part of his global collection using repurposed materials. You’ll meet and learn about Bo, Bodil and Bibbi and their nest as you explore the beautiful forested trails.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

places to visit dayton ohio

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is a sweet little children’s museum in the heart of Dayton. It’s geared mostly to preschool through age 8, with plenty of hands-on interactive exhibits to keep them engaged. There are LEGO tables, imaginative play spaces and light-based sensory activities.

One of the highlights of the Boonshoft is the massive multi-story climbing structure in the middle of the museum. Kids can scramble and slide to their hearts content, which is why this is one of the best things to do in Dayton when it rains. Older kids will appreciate the planetarium shows and “science on a sphere” presentations.

Pro tip: The Boonshoft is a member of ASTC, AZA and ACM so most families can get at least a 50% discount on their admission. They extend that discount to members of COSI and the Cincinnati Museum Center despite being within 90 miles.

Where to stay in Dayton, Ohio

When we’ve stayed in Dayton, we have camped at several of the city’s excellent MetroParks – they offer wonderful sites at reasonable prices! But not everyone is a camper and Dayton has a few nice places to stay.

Fully-loaded 5 bedroom vacation rental

places to visit dayton ohio

Ok, this might just be the best place to stay in Dayton, Ohio – especially for big groups. This vacation rental has basically everything you need for a fun Dayton getaway. There are 5 bedrooms, each with a queen bed and one with a crib to boot, and 2 bathrooms.

This property was actually converted from an office building, so it has plenty of space available. There’s a dedicated theater (with popcorn machine!), game room and an open kitchen/dining room layout to keep your whole group entertained after you come back from a day of sightseeing.

It’s located north of downtown Dayton, very close to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, Aullwood Gardens and Aullwood Audubon. The Wright Cycle Company complex is just a hair further.

Drury Inn & Suites Dayton North

places to visit dayton ohio

If you like the idea of staying north of central Dayton but prefer the amenities of a hotel, check out the Drury Inn & Suites Dayton North . It’s a great family-friendly place to stay in Dayton thanks to the extensive free breakfast and afternoon reception and both indoor and outdoor pools.

Some suites are available with two queen beds in the bedroom and then a separate living room with a sofa bed. Cribs are also available free of charge! You could feed your kids an early dinner from the managers reception and put them to bed while the grown ups enjoy DoorDash and a movie or take turns going to the fitness center.

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Dayton

places to visit dayton ohio

Looking for a place to stay in downtown Dayton? Check out the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Dayton . It’s adjacent to RiverScape MetroPark and across the street from Day Air Park (formerly Fifth Third Field), home of the minor league baseball Dayton Dragons. You can also walk to 2nd Street Market and the bars and restaurants of the historic Oregon District.

The Fairfield Inn is a pretty simple Dayton hotel, but it’s new, clean, well-located for some of the best things to do in Dayton Ohio downtown and includes both breakfast and parking in the rate.

Of course we aren’t done exploring yet! There are plenty more things to do in Dayton Ohio as we plan our return visits. We look forward to visiting the Dayton Art Institute, Huffman Prairie (location of many Wright brothers test flights), more of the gorgeous Dayton MetroParks Gardens, eating our way through the 2nd Street Market, horseback riding at Carriage Hill MetroPark, Cox Arboretum and the funky historic Oregon District.

You’ll also want to take a quick day trip to Yellow Springs, Ohio for beautiful hiking! If you can’t get enough of the outdoors, there are tons of great activities at Kiser Lake in Johnson Township, just 45 minutes north of Dayton.

Dayton, Ohio is the sixth-largest city in Ohio. It is located in the southwest part of the state, about forty-five minutes north of Cincinnati. What to Do in Dayton, Ohio

There are many different things to do in Dayton, Ohio that are included in this ultimate travel guide. From museums and history to bars and sports, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

National United States Airforce Museum

Dayton is the home of Wilber and Orville Wright, the brothers who created the airplane.

There is a large US Airforce base northeast of the city, home to the National Airforce Museum. The museum is HUGE! It has hundreds of airplanes, missiles, and interactive exhibits. There are exhibits on the airplane’s invention, the use of airplanes in wars, and aviation in space.

Outside of the museum, there is a nice park with walking paths, benches, and memorials for important people in the aviation community.

National US Airforce Museum

Dayton Art Institute

Founded in 1919, the Dayton Art Institute is a highly rated art museum located in Downtown Dayton. The building itself is gorgeous. It was built in 1930, and it was modeled after a mansion in Capraola, Italy, and the signature stairs were modeled after the stairs at a famous villa in Rome. The building is a registered U.S. National Historic Place.

The museum is home to works by well-known artists including Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Five Rivers Metroparks

Dayton has 18 Metroparks – parks that are located in the city. Five Rivers Metroparks is named after the five rivers that run through Dayton.

If you are staying downtown or can only visit one Metropark, I would recommend Riverscape. It is located on the Miami River on the north end of downtown. It runs along the river with walking paths, swings, picnic tables, concerts, and ice skating.

Throughout the park, there are statues and informative plaques about the inventions that were created in Dayton.

The parks are scattered all around the city, and each park has different features and activities, so you can find one that suits your interests.

Oregon District

The Oregon District is Dayton’s primary shopping and entertainment area. It stretches two blocks on East 5th Street downtown. There are over fifty businesses, including restaurants, bars, theaters, beauty and tattoo shops, and retail stores.

The area was part of the original city, beginning in the 1820s until the revitalization in the 1960s. As the city expanded, the district was preserved and became a registered historic district in 1974.

Warped Wing Brewery

One block north of the Oregon District is Warped Wing, Dayton’s local brewery. The brewery has six permanent beers and a large variety of seasonal offerings.

The brewery does not have an outdoor area, but the inside tasting room is large. They sell food, and in addition to the beers, they have wine and cider. There are board games and a pinball machine for guests to play while they enjoy the beer.

They offer tours on weekends that come with a free beer to enjoy during the tour and a cute pint glass to take home!

Dayton Dragons Games

The Dayton Dragons are a minor league baseball team in the Cincinnati Reds organization. They play at Day Air Ballpark in downtown Dayton. Tickets to games are cheap, and they have many ticket packages for families. However, games are very popular! In 2011, the Dayton Dragons overtook the Portland Trailblazers record for the most consecutive sold-out games.  The Dragons still hold the record today at 1,315 sold-out games in a row.

College Basketball Game

The University of Dayton and Wright State University are located in Dayton, on the south and north sides, respectively. Both schools have good men’s basketball teams who are in the NCAA Tournament most years.

If you are not a basketball fan, or want to attend a free game, both colleges have a variety of other sports teams with free tickets.

A Dayton Flyers game in Dayton, Ohio

2nd Street Market

Second Street Market is an indoor/outdoor farmers market in downtown Dayton that is open most of the year. The market has a booth for nearly everything. There is fresh, local produce, hot food stands, handmade clothing and jewelry, pet shops, jams, meats, dairy products, and much more! The market is open a few days a week and gets very busy on weekends! For more details on hours and vendors, check the website below.

Schuster Performing Arts Center

The Schuster Center in Dayton is a beautiful downtown performing art center. Constructed in 2003, the center is the heart of Dayton’s fine arts. The Schuster Center theaters host local, national, and international shows and events in a wide range of genres.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum

The Woodland Cemetary is located next to the University of Dayton in the south part of downtown. The Cemetery was founded in 1841. There are over three thousand trees and over one hundred and sixty species of plants. It is one of the oldest rural garden cemeteries in the United States.

The cemetery is open year-round and is home to many famous gravesites. The Wright Brothers (Wilbur and Orville), the inventors of aviation, have a beautiful plot. Other notable people are the poet and author Paul Dunbar, comedian and writer Erma Bombeck, and inventors John Patterson and Charles Kettering.

Where to Stay & Staying Safe in Dayton, Ohio

These are the neighborhoods I recommend staying in when you travel to Dayton, Ohio since they offer good accessibility to the places above, but there are also surrounding suburbs that are a good option if you have a car.

  • Downtown Dayton has many hotels and some modern Airbnb options. The location makes it easy to walk to many central attractions, and you can be close to the rivers for good views and walking paths.
  • South Park is the cutest neighborhood in Dayton. The houses are all old and colorful. Using Airbnb, it is easy to find a place to stay in South Park, and the neighborhood makes it easy to walk downtown, the Oregon District, and the University of Dayton.

Dayton is similar to most cities; there are safe areas, and there are unsafe areas. According to locals and law enforcement in the city, anything east of I-75 (the highway which divides the city in half) is safer than the west side. Of course, this is not an exact divide, as the Art Institute is west of the highway, but it is a safe place to go. Take this with a grain of salt, but from my experience, the east side is safe.

Restaurants in Dayton, Ohio

Tank’s bar and grill.

For some greasy but delicious bar-style food, eat at Tank’s Bar & Grill. Tank’s has an amazing breakfast menu that is served all day, along with an American lunch and dinner menu.

Milano’s Subs

Milano’s has the best subs in Dayton, and possibly in Ohio! They make their own bread in house and bake it fresh everyday.

South Park Tavern

For hot pizza, cold beer, and a good time, check out South Park Tavern. The pizza here is some of the best, and they have a huge variety of classic and specialties pizzas to choose from.

Getting There & Getting Around

Dayton is accessible by many major highways if you are driving from any larger midwest cities. There is also a small international airport north of the city. Cincinnati’s airport is also an option if you rent a car and the drive to Dayton is about an hour.

Bike Sharing!

The City of Dayton has a great bike-sharing program called Link Dayton. You can rent bikes all over the city for a few hours a day or get a membership for long-term access. There are Link stations near all the major attractions mentioned above and in many other locations. If the weather is nice, I would highly recommend using the bikes to get around town.

When to Travel to Dayton, Ohio

Dayton, Ohio is in the Midwestern part of the United States, so the best time to visit weather-wise is between April and September. This is Spring and Summer, so the weather is warm with no snow and little rain. Visiting from October to February is not bad if you do not mind the snow. You will not want to bike or walk very far, so it is best to have a car if you visit during these times.

If you visit between August and May, there will be college students at the universities’ bars and restaurants. There is usually a round of the March Madness basketball tournament held at one of the universities, so part of March will be busy and expensive.

Enjoy Traveling to Dayton, Ohio!

Dayton is a great city for anyone to visit. From the history to the fun restaurants, bars, and activities downtown, visiting Dayton, Ohio has something for everyone. This ultimate travel guide to Dayton, Ohio will help you have a great time when you visit.

More about the eclipse

Timing: The Total Solar Eclipse in Southwest Ohio will be between 3:08-3:17 p.m. with the Southwestern parts of Ohio being first and the Cleveland area being the last as it moves toward Canada. The centerline of the eclipse enters Ohio just after 1:50 p.m.

Locations: According to the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources and NASA, the path of totality, or the most central Southwest Ohio spots to see the total solar eclipse include Darke, Shelby and Auglaize counties. Close to that center, though, are the counties of Montgomery, Miami, Champaign and Preble.
