12 of the best cruises in Asia
From bali to borneo, the variety of voyages on offer in the world’s most diverse continent is astonishing. our cruise expert helps you navigate the waters.
A sia represents a vast cruising area with any number of itinerary combinations, from the glass towers and neon lights of Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo, to the rainforests of Borneo, the beaches of Bali and the mist-shrouded limestone towers of Vietnam’s Halong Bay. A cruise could last anything from a week to a month — or you could book a sector of a world voyage connecting, say, Australia with India and stringing together a series of the region’s star attractions. Or travel slowly. A Mekong River cruise would carry you through Cambodia and Vietnam at a much gentler pace, stopping for visits to Buddhist temples, floating markets and riverside villages. As for the style of ship, you have endless choice. Voyage in all-inclusive luxury, strike out on an expedition or keep an eye out for cruise deals and save your budget for adventures and shopping ashore. Here are some of the top lines operating in the continent — and what you can expect from each.

1. Seabourn
Seabourn’s small ships offer an extremely comfortable base from which to explore Asia; they’re all-inclusive, with gourmet food, a gorgeous spa and sporty excursions including kayaking, snorkelling and guided hikes. All the most popular ports are covered, from Singapore to Bangkok, Halong Bay to Hong Kong . A series of departures from the latter takes you to the coral beaches of Japan’s tropical islands as well as Taiwan and Shanghai . Meanwhile, other itineraries meander through islands of the Philippines , to explore the coral reefs and islets of the Hundred Islands archipelago and look for sea turtles and dugongs.

2. Royal Caribbean
While Royal Caribbean operates a range of itineraries across Asia, they’re a good option if you want to add a mini cruise from Singapore. This can be a fun way to spend a few days in conjunction with a city stay or a longer, land-based tour. A three or four-night jaunt could take you to Penang and Phuket, for gorgeous beaches, rainforest tours and the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay. Or you could head to Penang and Port Klang, which offers access to Kuala Lumpur. Dining on board ranges from Asian fast food to gourmet fusion dishes, with buzzing nightlife and shopping geared to locals as well as international visitors.

• Best things to do in Vietnam
Cunard’s stately Queens have a strong following in Asia. The elegant Queen Elizabeth operates an annual season from Tokyo, with options to circumnavigate Japan, exploring Tokyo in depth and spending a day in lush, subtropical Kagoshima, as well as taking in the temples and shrines of Fukuoka and the Peace Memorial Park in Nagasaki. There are shorter voyages, too, between Hong Kong and Singapore, via Halong Bay, or between Singapore and Shanghai. Time and budget permitting, you could even join Queen Mary 2’s world voyage and sail all the way from Southampton to Asia, a grand adventure of more than 30 nights.

4. Silversea
The ultra-luxury line Silversea has an extensive line-up of Asia cruises, ranging from week-long forays out of Tokyo, allowing you to explore Japan’s mountains and temples, to longer voyages between Hong Kong and Singapore. On these, you’ll visit ports including Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as Halong Bay, where hundreds of limestone towers are scattered across an emerald sea. Some cruises stop at Tianjin, the port for Beijing, so you can marvel at the Great Wall of China. Others head slowly south, threading their way through the islands of Indonesia, with calls at Bali and Komodo, and along the forested coast of Papua New Guinea, before heading to Australian shores.
5. Princess Cruises
With departures from Singapore, Tokyo, Kobe and Hong Kong, Princess has Asia comprehensively covered. Some trips are short — for example, seven days from Singapore taking in ports such as Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Langkawi — while others whisk you from Singapore down through Indonesia’s islands to Australia . There’s also the possibility of combining ports such as Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City in southeast Asia with Hong Kong and Japan. Expect big, modern ships with plenty of distractions on board; these are port-intensive cruises and you’ll welcome a few lazy hours by the pool.
6. Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity bases one of its smart, contemporary ships in Asia for the winter season, roaming between Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam, with some voyages starting in Yokohama, the port for Tokyo, and circling Japan. You could explore Vietnam in depth on a cruise calling at Hanoi (for Halong Bay), as well as Chan May (for Hue, the ancient capital of the Nguyen dynasty) and the sandy beaches of Nha Trang, before plunging into the chaos of Ho Chi Minh City. Here, discover incense-scented temples, sizzling street food and the poignant history of the Vietnam War, set against a backdrop of futuristic skyscrapers.
7. Holland America Line
With winter itineraries focused mainly on departures from Yokohama/Tokyo and Hong Kong, Holland America Line offers multiple combinations of ports in east Asia. You could opt for an intensive 14 days exploring Japan and Korea, or splash out on a 28-day voyage visiting China, from the bright lights of Shanghai to Tianjin, the gateway to the wonders of Beijing, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall of China. Some cruises take in ports in the Philippines too, from the exquisite white-sand island of Boracay, to Puerto Princesa, known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and caves and underground river system.
8. Viking Cruises
Viking’s Asian itineraries range from a compact 12 nights to extended voyages of three months. Itineraries may take you from Singapore to Tokyo , or Bangkok to Bali. Viking’s Scandi-chic 930-passenger ships are ideally suited to long-distance, port-intensive cruising for several reasons: every cabin has a balcony, while the infinity pool on deck is perfect for cooling off after a busy day ashore. There’s an excursion included in every port too. Viking has a beautiful river cruiser, the Viking Saigon, sailing between Ho Chi Minh City and Kampong Cham, for the Angkor temples near Siem Reap, with add-ons to Halong Bay or Bangkok.

9. Aqua Expeditions
The sleek Aqua Mekong is the closest you’ll get to a cool boutique hotel on the Mekong River, with acclaimed cuisine, a top-deck plunge pool and a private cinema. This is without doubt one of the most stylish ways to sail the Mekong and its tributaries between Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap. Alternatively, explore some of Indonesia’s most beautiful scenery in depth on Aqua Blu, a former Royal Navy motoryacht that has been converted into an ultra-luxurious expedition ship. It visits Komodo, the Spice Islands and the jungly islands and coral reefs of Raja Ampat for hiking, wildlife spotting, and snorkel trips.

Cruising in Asia tends to be more about big ships, long distances and busy cities, but the luxury expedition line Ponant focuses some of its itineraries on smaller, more remote areas. You could explore gargantuan volcanoes such as Krakatoa and Mount Bromo in Indonesia, or snorkel among sea turtles over dazzling coral reefs in the archipelago of Karimunjawa in the Java Sea. A bonus — Ponant’s smart ships are built for tropical expedition cruising, with infinity pools and swimming platforms. Some even have a multisensory underwater viewing lounge playing the sounds of the marine world.

11. Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Regent’s ultra-luxury ships offer more inclusive pricing than pretty much any other cruise line, with everything from excursions in port to gourmet dining, tips, wi-fi, drinks and hotel stays to bookend your voyage part of the package. Regent’s imaginative itineraries focus on maximum time in port; a single itinerary may, for example, feature an overnight in Hanoi, for Halong Bay, as well as two days in each of Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. Here, you can pack in temples and markets and soak up the vibe of these modern, dynamic metropolises.

12. Uniworld
You need a comfortable, soothing base on a voyage along the Mekong, where days ashore are hot, often humid and always packed with new sights, sounds and experiences. Uniworld’s 68-passenger Mekong Jewel is one of the smartest ships on the river, with an inviting pool, spa and two restaurants. Mekong cruises drift through the bucolic countryside of Cambodia and Vietnam, with forays ashore to markets, temples and craft workshops. There is a day in Phnom Penh to learn about the tragic history of Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. Tours include three nights in a hotel in arty Siem Reap; ample time to explore the crumbling temples of Angkor emerging from the rainforest, and to shop for crafts and sample the nightlife.

Top tip for your cruise to Asia
Prepare for the contrast in temperatures. Although cruising across Asia throughout most of the year you will find outdoor temperatures to often top 30 °C, air conditioning inside is cold. Bring a layer or two to wear when visiting inside shopping malls, restaurants and tourist attractions.
Top Asian cruise harbours
When you arrive at Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong, you will get a preview of what this amazing city has to offer. Colourful, full of life and with breath-taking scenery from the moment you arrive, the harbour acts as a gateway, inspiring you to explore the city further.
See Hong Kong from its highest and most picturesque vantage point at Victoria Peak. Take the tram up the steep 1,300 feet climb and save your energy for the Peak Circle Walk at the top, allowing you to appreciate Hong Kong from every angle.
A visit to the Tian Tan Buddha, or ‘Big Buddha’ is another rise above the city that provides spectacular views from the glass-bottomed cable car ride up and as Hong Kong’s most iconic attraction, it is one not to miss. --> Hong Kong cruises

If time allows, step outside the city boundaries and soak up the overwhelming beauty of the Japanese natural landscape. Standing at 3,776 metres, as Japan’s highest mountain, Mount Fuji and its surrounding Fuji Fives Lakes are simply stunning.
The Tokyo Tower, built on the model of the Eiffel Tower, stands 13 metres taller than its inspiration, but is only half the weight, due to advances in steel technology. --> Tokyo cruises

Marina Bay Sands Hotel has gained worldwide notoriety. Walk along the waterfront here to appreciate the elegant city skyline any time of day. --> Singapur cruises
A trip to Singapore’s Night Safari is a unique and eerie opportunity to come face to face with 120 species of nocturnal wildlife and fragrant jungle foliage.
When is the best time to go on an Asia cruise?
Climate and weather patterns can vary quite significantly, even within the same country in Asia, so it is useful to know what to expect, so you can plan accordingly.
Brief guide of the three main ports in our Asia cruise.
Best time to visit hong kong.
As a subtropical location, the best time to visit Hong Kong is either in the Spring (March -April) or Autumn (October – November). Temperatures are moderate, usually around the mid-20°C, sunshine is common and evenings are cool. July and August can get hot and humid and there is the potential for typhoons, however this does encourage great travel and shopping discounts.
Best time to visit Tokyo
The weather is Tokyo mirrors the UK to a large extend, making Spring (March-May) and autumn (September to November) comfortable times to be out and about, exploring. Travelling in May is beautiful, as the parks and gardens are all in bloom.
Best time to visit Singapore
Being closer to the equator, the temperatures in Singapore remain quite consistent; between 30-33°C. The rainy season is between November and December. However, from June to August, it can get humid, so there is the potential for flash thunderstorms. At any time of year, it’s best to get up early and enjoy the cooler temperatures for sightseeing and also to avoid the crowds.
During peak tourist season, top attractions in the cities can get busy. Book in advance or go early to ensure that you can maximise your time in each location.
Top sights in Asia
Asia’s variety of incredible landscapes, fascinating cultures and ancient historical sites is so extensive that the possibilities for adventure are endless. We’ve picked out our three favourite sights, within close vicinity to our top three harbours.
High Island Reservoir East Dam
The spectacular sight of the largest reservoir in Hong Kong makes High Island Reservoir East Dam well worth a visit. It is situated at the most accessible part of the Hong Kong Global Geopark and features hexagonal volcanic rock columns, formed over 140 million years ago, alongside thousands of dolosse blocks (huge cement barriers shaped like jacks) placed along the coast to break the sea waves; a truly surreal and unique sight.
Sensoji, Asakusa
Sensoji, Asakusa is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, built in 628. It’s colourful, five-storied pagoda and 200m long, historic shopping street, selling souvenirs and traditional Japanese snacks, attracts many tourists and is host to several large-scale festivals throughout the year.
Raffles Hotel
Enjoy a Singapore Sling in the place where it was created: Raffle Bar in the Raffles Hotel. This hotel has become iconic in Singapore with its colonial history dating back to 1887. Its list of celebrity guests includes Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson and even Queen Elizabeth II. Aside from its magnificent 103 suites and 18 restaurants, it has an arcade of over 40 designer boutiques and stores; heaven for the shopaholic.
For every 10 people alive in the world, 6 of them live in Asia!
Regional Asian dishes
If you love exciting, varied cuisine, bursting with flavour, then Asia will not disappoint. Although Asian food has become increasingly popular in the U.K., tasting the dishes prepared at their origin takes the experience to a whole new level.
Try the unique flavour of Ramen, a Japanese wheat noodle bowl in a Miso broth. Often garnished with egg, pork, seaweed or onion, the dish is strong in flavour, healthy and filling.
Travel to Hong Kong and you must try Dim Sum. Translated as ‘touch the heart’, Dim Sum is not a singular dish, but more a style of food, being a variety of bite-sized dishes. Think Asian style tapas. Hong Kong is famous for its variety of Dim Sum, so here is the place to sample the best.
For a traditional taste of Singaporean cuisine, Bak Kut The, or Pork Ribs Soup, is the dish to order. Simple and humble, this dish consists of a pork broth, spiced with mild herbs, such as star anise and is often thought to be a tonic to reenergise workers.
Fascinating Facts about Asia
Despite Hong Kong’s reputation for high rise skyscrapers, hiking is one of the nation’s favourite pastimes with 40% of its territory is made of country parks and nature reserves.
Hong Kong has the world’s longest covered escalator. Running for 800m, lined with shops and restaurants, the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator was featured as one of the ‘coolest commutes’ by CNN in 2015.
Japan has the greatest density of vending machines in the world, with one on nearly every street corner. These are reported to total around 5.5 million vending machines across the country, which sell everything form hot coffee to umbrellas and fresh eggs!
Cherry blossoms (sakura) are Japan's national flower. Their colourful bloom can be enjoyed at varying times of the year from January to late May, depending where you are in the country.
Singapore is one of only three city states in the world; the others being Monaco and the Vatican City. This is where a singular city and its dependent territories is politically independent and makes up an entire nation.
If you come across a $1,000 note in Singapore, have a look more closely. On the back you will find the full national anthem, written in microtext.

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts
These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.
Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.
Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises
When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.
For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.
Oceania Cruises
Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."
If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.
Viking Cruises
Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."
Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant
French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.
Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.
Windstar Cruises
Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.
Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours
Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.
Cunard Line
Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line
This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.
Paul Gauguin Cruises
Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises
Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.
Celebrity Cruises
Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.
The Best Southeast Asia Cruises: 4 Great Small Ship Itineraries
By Heidi Sarna
March 11, 2023
I’ve sailed on more than 125 cruises and have always gravitated toward the smaller ships (under 300 passengers) for the uncrowded, up-close-and-personal experience they provide. That’s why I cofounded QuirkyCruise.com to share reviews and news about small-ship cruises around the world, from Europe to North America and Asia.
Based in Singapore for the past 17 years, I’ve done a lot of small ship cruising in the region. Here are four of my favorite small ship cruise itineraries in Southeast Asia.
Upper Mekong River in Laos
The Mekong River winds its way down from China through several countries before emptying into the South China Sea. I recently cruised for 10 days on the section that flows through sparsely populated Laos , between capital city Vientiane and the Thai border near Chiang Rai, enjoying the mountainous terrain and zigzagging route.
In some spots the riverbanks are sandy like a beach. Elsewhere, river levels may be low due to normal seasonal fluctuations as well as dam-building farther upriver, and the exposed rocks create a beautiful lunar tableau—and a challenging obstacle course for ship captains.
Excursions along the way include treks to caves, waterfalls, and mountainside shrines, as well as walks through remote villages. A day or two is spent in the atmospheric city of Luang Prabang at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers to tour the many Buddhist temples and monasteries.

Lower Mekong River in Cambodia and Vietnam
The classic weeklong Mekong itinerary cruises between river points near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam , and Siem Reap, Cambodia , where you should definitely stay for a few days to see the spectacular centuries-old temple ruins at Angkor Wat .
On the Lower Mekong, the riverscape varies from remote and pastoral on the Cambodian side—where you can spot people bathing and slapping laundry against stones at the river’s edge—to the more industrial and bustling Vietnam part of the river. Emerald-green terraced rice fields, shipbuilders, and other businesses cling to the river at many points.
On excursions, you can walk through villages and past picture-perfect rice fields and venture into pungent wet markets and floating fish farms. There are also temples, monasteries, and Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh , a mix of shiny new buildings and French colonial architecture.

Indonesian Archipelago
Small ship cruise itineraries focus on two areas of the Indonesian archipelago in the heart of the Coral Triangle, site of the world’s richest marine biodiversity and therefore some of the world’s best diving and snorkeling, too.
On vessels ranging from motor yachts to modern sailing ships as well as traditional pinisi -style schooners, cruises on the western route typically travel between the islands of Bali and Flores , focusing on the volcanic Komodo island, famous for its huge monitor lizards, aka Komodo dragons.
In the east, meanwhile, voyages in the Raja Ampat archipelago and West Papua province are all about beaches, bays, lagoons, and legendary avian species such as the elusive and beautiful bird of paradise.
Small ship cruise lines that go here : SeaTrek Sailing Adventures , Ponant , Aqua Expeditions , Dewi Nusantara
Red River and Halong Bay in Vietnam
On a 10-day itinerary, a small ship can cover several hundred miles between Halong Bay (pictured at the top of this page) and Hoa Binh in northern Vietnam, spending a few days in the picturesque and otherworldly limestone karst–studded Halong Bay, the dramatic backdrop to films like Indochine (1992) and The Quiet American (2002).
Except for a day in frenetic and fascinating Hanoi (notable for its colonial architecture, war heritage, and foodie culture), the rest of this route is spent on the Red River and its tributaries, which reach into the rural landscapes and small towns of Vietnam’s heartland.
Among the rewarding ways to spend time off the ship: village walks, kayaking in Halong Bay, watching a traditional water puppet show, taking tours of heritage sites, and getting a close-up look at traditional methods for making ceramics, furniture, rice wine, knives, and noodles.

7 Most Affordable Cruise Lines That’ll Make Your Cruising Dreams Come True
Posted: October 2, 2023 | Last updated: October 2, 2023
The cheapest cruise lines
Cruising is often described as the ultimate relaxing vacation. You only unpack once, yet you wake up in a new country or island every morning. You also never have to worry about where to eat, there are nonstop activities onboard that keep everyone entertained—and most everything is included in the price. So you don't have to worry much about overspending once you're on board if you book on one of the most affordable cruise lines.
Of course, everything is more expensive these days, leaving some travelers to wonder if there are still affordable cruises available to meet their vacation budgets. Thankfully, that answer is yes, and there are several brands that still provide exceptional value aboard their floating cities. Many are among the best cruise lines , and some are even frequent cruisers' favorite cruises . In fact, you might be surprised to learn that living on a cruise ship can be cheaper than a mortgage , in case you decide you never want to return from your vacation.
So follow these cruise tips for how to save money on a cruise by booking the most affordable cruise lines. You may even be able to sneak in an extra vacation this year with all your savings. Here's what to pack for a cruise .
How much does a cheap cruise cost?
Cheap cruises usually range in price from $40 to $100 per night per person. To put that deal in perspective, imagine having your accommodations, food and entertainment covered for roughly $50 a day on a traditional land-based trip—you'd be hard-pressed to stay within that budget just for your meals. It's truly impressive that these all-inclusive cruises can charge so little.
But before you get too excited over these low prices, don't forget to factor in the cost of the extras when calculating your total expenses—that's one of the secrets cruise lines won't tell you . Things like drinks, shore excursions, gratuities, spa treatments, specialty dining, airfare, photos, taxes and port fees aren't included and can add up quickly.
Finally, keep in mind that the best deals will always be for an inside cabin, which means you won't have a porthole (let alone a balcony) for natural light. The good news? You'll sleep like a baby in total darkness, especially during an afternoon nap.

When is the cheapest time to book a cruise?
It's important to pay attention to the cheapest times to book a cruise if you want to save even more. Wave season, which is from January to March, is a promotional time of year when cruise lines run their most competitive sales. These sales are designed to encourage bookings for later in the year. You can also keep an eye on sites like MSC's Cruise Deals to find great prices.
There are great deals at other times of the year too. Generally speaking, the further in advance you book, the better prices you'll find. But the opposite is also true, because cruise lines will happily sell unused inventory at a significantly reduced rate in the form of last-minute deals. You'll need a flexible schedule to pull this off, and you may find airfare is too costly at that point.
Beyond wave season, planning far in advance or nabbing last-minute cruise deals, it's also wise to consider booking your cruises for the off-season. For instance, for the Caribbean and Mexico, that would mean summer sailings or during shoulder season (the month before and after high season—for example, in the case of Alaska, this would be in May or September). Just know that you are taking a bit of a risk with the weather during these off-peak times.

While some travelers dream of lounging on a beach in the Caribbean, others might be itching to put on hiking shoes and explore the great outdoors. If glaciers, wildlife and picturesque coastline have long been on your bucket list, consider booking a cruise to Alaska. The northernmost American state offers an activity for everyone's interest and level of adventure. You can take a thrilling helicopter flight to explore a glacier on foot or observe miles of Alaska’s lush scenery and spy whales from a comfortable seat on a boat.
Princess Cruises
A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.
Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.
In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.
Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)
Norwegian Cruise Line
Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.
They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.
The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.
Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line
Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."
On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."
If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.
Departure City: Vancouver Cruise Ship: Disney Wonder
Royal Caribbean International
Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.
Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.
Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)
National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions
For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.
Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”
Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution
Holland America Line
Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.
One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.
Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.
Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam
Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.
Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.
Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge
Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska
✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.
✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.
✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.
✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.
✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.
✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.
