Best Alligator Tours Orlando

I know how amazing an experience it is getting to see alligators in the wild, it’s incredible. But you want to take a good tour. Nothing is worse than taking a tour that leaves you with a bad experience- it can completely ruin a whole day. This list only features the best of the best alligator tours in Orlando that I have taken myself and I can assure you that they will live up to the hype.

1. Florida Everglades Airboat Tour and Wild Florida Admission with Optional Lunch

A picture of an alligator with its head just above the water during an alligator tour fro Orlando.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (1700+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 0.5-1 hour | 🐊 BOOK NOW

The highest-rated and most popular alligator tour Orlando is the Florida Everglades Airboat Tour and Wild Florida Admission with Optional Lunch which has an extremely impressive 1700+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reviews.

Review which says "The captain was awesome and informative. It was great spotting baby alligators and a couple big ones. Loved seeing all the birds and different flowers that grew wild. Definitely a must see, will be back myself. The pulled pork was fabulous and enjoyed the animals park and safari as well."

When taking a tour, no matter what tour it is or where in the world it is, I always like to go with the tried and tested option. No one wants to book a tour that hasn’t got any reviews, right? This tour has more than passed the test of time. You don’t get a 5/5 rating after nearly 2000 reviews by chance – this tour is top quality.

Florida Everglades Airboat Tour and Wild Florida Admission with Optional Lunch is the first alligator tour I took in Orlando, and I’ve re-visited on multiple occasions I enjoyed it so much.

The tour is an airboat tour, which is a type of boat that glides over the water rather than through the water thanks to the huge fan on the back. I’m not too sure how else to explain it.

It’s through the Everglades and leaves you with lots of opportunities to see wild alligators. From my experience, this tour features the highest density of alligators. One time on a 30-minute tour, I saw 6 or 7 gators, maybe even more. That’s so many!

Speaking of the length of the tour, you have the option of a 30-minute or a 60-minute tour. I would recommend the full-hour tour, because the longer you have exploring the Everglades looking for gators, the better.

Getting to see alligators in the wild is a memorable experience and one that not everyone gets to experience.

If you buy this tour, entry to Wild Florida’s gator park is also included. It’s my favourite animal park in Florida, beating Busch Gardens and Gator World. There’s so much on offer. From the drive-thru safari to the personal animal encounters, you’re guaranteed a great time at the park after you’ve taken your alligator airboat tour. There are also alligator shows and the option to feed some gators. It’s not to be missed!

Wild Florida is approximately 40 minutes or so from Orlando, but it’s more than worth the drive. You will find that it’s not really possible to take an alligator tour in the heart of Orlando because it’s a city. Instead, the Everglades is where most tours take place.

I genuinely can’t recommend this tour, and Wild Florida enough. If you’re looking for the best alligator tour in Orlando, you’ve found it. It’s Florida Everglades Airboat Tour and Wild Florida Admission with Optional Lunch .

2. 90-min Everglades Airboat Tour in Central Florida

A picture of an alligator lurking in the water

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (750+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🐊 BOOK NOW

If you are looking for a longer Orlando alligator tour, then 90-min Everglades Airboat Tour in Central Florida is the tour for you.

orlando fl alligator tours

This is the longest tour in this article , lasting a whopping 90 minutes (1 hour and 30 minutes). Taking a tour this long provides you with the opportunity to see so many wild alligators.

Seeing the fascinating creatures in the wild is a completely different experience to seeing alligators in captivity. It’s much more natural and feels more rewarding too. Nothing beats the feeling of spotting an alligator for yourself- especially if you manage to spot one before your tour guide!

90-min Everglades Airboat Tour in Central Florida is also incredibly high-rated, with a rating of 5 out of 5 after over 750 reviews. Just like the last tour, it’s more than passed the test of time. Seeing such a high rating from previous travellers should be enough assurance that this is a good tour.

Aside from seeing the wild alligators, the feeling of riding an airboat is also exhilarating. The thrill of gliding over the water with the wind blowing in your face and the gorgeous Floridian sun shining down is amazing. I’d still take an airboat ride in a boring lake with no alligators!

But honestly, this tour is great too. The offer to see gators in their natural habitat is one not to be missed out on. And taking an airboat tour is the best way to do so. The guides’ commentary is both entertaining and educational with lots of things to learn about, and they will point out any alligators they spot so you don’t miss any.

To have the most time exploring the Everglades and searching for wild alligators, book the 90-min Everglades Airboat Tour in Central Florida which is the longest tour on this list.

3. Orlando: Boggy Creek Airboat Ride with Options

A picture of an alligator in the swaps of the Everglades during an Orlando alligator tour.

⭐ RATING: 4.7 out of 5 Stars (300+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 0.5-1 hour | 🐊 BOOK NOW

Another solid alligator tour in Orlando option is the Orlando: Boggy Creek Airboat Ride with Options which still has a very impressive rating of 4.7/5. The quality across the board of all of these Everglades airboat tours is excellent.

Review which says "The boat ride was really fun. The guide was courteous and informative. We saw gators and several types of birds on our tour. The lunch was good and our two grandsons enjoyed the gem mining activity. We all enjoyed the butterfly enclosure. The butterflies were beautiful and we enjoyed them sitting on our finger eating nectar. It was a fun and low key afternoon well worth the entry price."

As the name suggests, Orlando: Boggy Creek Airboat Ride with Options offers lots of different tour options and add-ons. Firstly, you can choose from a 30-minute or a 60-minute tour. Again, I recommend the longer option.

But you can also pay for a private tour. It’s the most exclusive way of exploring the Everglades and allows for a more personal and luxurious experience. Note that normal airboat rides include up to 15 people usually.

Some tours include lunch, and other options include a sunset tour and a night tour. These are such unique opportunities and an entirely different tour from during the day. The sunset tour is pretty much just the same as the day tour but with a nice scenic sunset during the swamp tours.

But the night tour is where things start to get spicy. Alligators are nocturnal, meaning they are awake during the night. Taking an airboat ride at night allows you to see even more gators than during the day. It’s also quite exciting riding through alligator-infested waters at night when you can’t see much. It’s a true adventure. But seeing the alligators with the shine of a torch is a special feeling.

You can also opt for tours which include access to the rest of Boggy Creek, a lesser-known park, but one that I would consider underrated. There’s a butterfly garden, a Native American village, a fossil and gem mine and more. Some tours include mining for gems which is super fun for kids!

If you’re looking for an alligator tour in Orlando that offers a little bit more, then Orlando: Boggy Creek Airboat Ride with Options is the best choice for you.

4. Central Florida Everglades Airboat Tour from Orlando

A picture of an alligator swimming in open water in the Everglades

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (125+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 5 hours | 🐊 BOOK NOW

If you want a hassle-free alligator tour from Orlando that picks you up from the city and drops you off afterwards, take a look at the Central Florida Everglades Airboat Tour from Orlando .

Review which says "It was incredible! Definitely would do it again! Saw so many amazing animals in the wild! The air boat was so much fun and our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable!"

This tour offers pick-ups from Orlando, Disney and Kissimmee and takes you to the Everglades for your airboat tour and wild gator spotting. Then, afterwards, it drops you right back to where it picked you up. It’s super convenient and avoids all the hassle of making it to the Everglades yourself.

Depending on the day, it will either take you to Wild Florida, or to Boggy Creek , meaning you get to experience all of the amazing things listed above. Note that the 5-hour tour length begins when you are picked up and ends when you are dropped off, it is not the length of the actual airboat tour.

You can choose to book either a half-hour or full-hour airboat tour.

During an airboat ride, as well as being able to spot alligators lurking in the swampy waters, there’s an opportunity to see lots of other incredible wildlife. I’ve been lucky enough to see a bald eagle on a few occasions…it was unreal. Seeing an animal in the wild with such huge symbolic meaning and what the animal represents was special, even for someone like me who isn’t American.

Another common spotting is turtles , which are also pretty fun to see in the wild. As well as so many different species of birds, and lots of other fascinating wildlife. If you love animals, you will love an airboat tour.

Believe it or not, some people actually don’t know there are alligators in Orlando. They’re everywhere in Florida! People also don’t know very often that they’re in Tampa too.

But there’s no better place to see them than in the Everglades!

For an alligator tour from Orlando that brings you to and from the Everglades, definitely book the Central Florida Everglades Airboat Tour from Orlando .

5. Orlando: Wild Florida Everglades Airboat & Wildlife Park

A picture of an alligator swimming during an everglades airboat tour

⭐ RATING: 4.7 out of 5 Stars (335+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 0.5-1 hour | 🐊 BOOK NOW

Last but by no means least of these alligator tours Orlando is Orlando: Wild Florida Everglades Airboat & Wildlife Park . And it really is a case of “last but not least”, with over 300 reviews averaging at 4.7/5 stars.

Review which says "Great Day Out - Easy uber ride from Orlando and took around 30 minutes. The staff were helpful and friendly. We saw lots of wildlife and had fun on the airboat. We saw lots of Alligators as well as amazing bird life including Eagles. Our guide was informative and we felt safe the entire time."

Once again, this airboat tour brings you to Wild Florida. By the way, Wild Florida is worth visiting on its own. As I said, it’s my favourite animal park in Florida, and I like it so much that I actually wrote a full post on a Wild Florida review if you would like more information.

But as much as I love the park itself, it would be a shame to visit without taking an airboat ride, but I imagine that’s what you’re on this article for anyway.

Wild Florida’s airboat tours all but guarantee that you will see wild gators. They have over 4,200 acres of, and I quote, “beautiful lush scenery, including protected swamps, marshes and rivers, at the heart of the Central Florida Everglades”.

This could not be more true. What’s so good about the airboat rides, is that on top of seeing American Alligators in their natural habitats, aside from all of the other wildlife and the thrill of an airboat ride, is that the landscape is incredible.

Florida’s Everglades offer some of the most amazing natural beauty I’ve ever seen. Admiring the greenery around me while travelling at speed gliding over the water through tall reed grass, lily pads and water flowers, surrounded by tall trees is one of my favourite memories from the airboat tours I have taken.

For an unforgettable tour, and the time of your life, book the Orlando: Wild Florida Everglades Airboat & Wildlife Park .

AT EVERGLADES ALLIGATOR FARM

South Florida’s oldest alligator farm, the Everglades Alligator Farm, is located near the entrance of Everglades National Park and contains more than 2,000 alligators.

A trip to the Everglades Alligator Farm includes an exciting airboat tour, an alligator show, and an alligator feeding demonstration! If you are headed to Key Largo or Key West, this is an attraction you absolutely won’t want to miss.

BEST AIRBOAT RIDE IN SOUTH FLORIDA

I went here today with my husband and paid about $60 for both of us, and that is already including airboat show in the package which I highly recommend. This is a great spot to check out when in South Florida. We spent about three hours in the place. Staffs are friendly and shows were very entertaining.

A quick adventure, not too long but enough to get a feel for the land. We loved the 360 turns, even got soaked (or a little wet) depending on where you sit. You can feed an Emu, see the anaconda and fun gift shop too. We loved the baby alligator pen and holding a baby alligator was unforgettable! The alligator feeding and alligator show was great, the gentleman who hosted was even better. Very friendly, patient with kids and informative/educational.

We had a lot of fun here, the animals look like they are taken good care of and Liz was great, she did all the shows on this day (gator, snakes, feeding) and we thought she did an amazing job! The airboat tour was also great, it’s loud but you get ear protection and we saw gators!

As an animal lover, this was just about the best part of our 5 day trip here. I loved the great info from both shows and got to hold a baby alligator too! Over 250 alligators to see of all sizes. If you cant decide whether to add the boat ride, think no more, add it. Very fun, safe and once in a lifetime experience. All so affordable.

Highly recommend visiting this place. It was one of the best experience on our holiday. We booked an animal experience tour which was great, we all loved it and many thanks to our great guide! He was so nice and knowledgeable and made the tour really enjoyable for the kids too. Thank you!

I hadn't had high expectations because the price was lower than other options I had looked into. Tyler was engaging and informative for the alligator feeding and show. Jose was a great tour guide on the fan boat through the everglades. There is a reptile exhibit among other animals to view included with the general admission. My two young kids had a great time as well. It's couple and kid-friendly!

Not just a roadside attraction - but also very educational. The folks who gave the talks where very informative about the reptiles and conservation starts with education. The airboat ride was very fun and VERY wet - too short though. Spent about 3 hours there.

They keep adding to it and it's grown substantially since my last visit. Well worth the admission fee of $27.00 USD which does not include the swamp bait ride. I think it was $32.00 all inclusive. This place does a great job through it's alligator feeding and taming exhibitions. In addition to alligators, they have crocodiles, bobcats, parakeets, large turtles, a snake exhibit, and much more. On this trip, there was no snake show with used to be part of the schedule. I'm not sure if it was discontinued or just not available on the day we went. You are free to bring in your own food and enjoy a nice picnic at one of their many picnic tables. Your entire experience takes about three hours. It's quite educational and I highly recommend it.

You can do the whole thing (feeding demo, airboat ride, show) in around two hours. They have over 400 alligators and a variety of other animals on exhibit. There are several enclosures with baby alligators. The airboat ride is 20 minutes of fun if you get the right guide. Ours was awesome. You actually learn a lot that you may not know about gators.

ECON RIVER ORLANDO ALLIGATOR ENCOUNTER

orlando fl alligator tours

Wildlife Abounds

Come enjoy paddling Orlando’s closest wild river. Have your cameras ready for amazing wildlife including MASSIVE alligators, otters, turtles, wading birds, and the occasional wandering manatees. Your professional guides will get you close and keeps you safe!

We paddle 8.5 miles all downstream through the Econlockhatchee State Forest. We take time stopping at numerous beaches for swim breaks (yes it is safe), rope swings, short hikes on the Florida trail, and a light snack under the remains of the Flagler railroad bridge.

This tour is also wonderful for our birding friends. Swallow Tail Kites, Bald Eagles, Crested Caracara, Limpkins, Ibis, and Roseate Spoonbills all call this river home.

Our founder and owner grew up near this river and still lives beside it. It is no wonder why we love taking people out paddling on it and sharing its beauty.

At the end of the paddle we do what no other tour company in Orlando will, we shuttle you back to your car. We believe having to paddle out and back upstream is a horrible idea and only allows you to experience half of the river.

With Over 10,000 Reviews Online, We’re The Most Talked About Airboat Tour Anywhere In The World!

First trip to Florida and this was one of my things to go too. Awesome place for Swap Tours. Great people at the front office with a smile as you walk in. Captain Jim is the man. Very likable and great personality! We got to see an 8’ alligator which was pretty cool. Great job guys!

This was an absolutely great airboat tour. AJ was our guide, who was informative and humorous too! I had a keen interest in birding and he pointed out about 10+ species of birds including 4 bald eagles. We saw about 5-10 alligators during our visit. Would visit again & highly recommend!

Wild Willys was a great Airboat ride through the marshes. Saw several gators and lots of wildlife. The guide was knowledgable about the area and very friendly. The people inside were also very friendly and knowledgable. Definitely recommend.

The one-hour airboat ride was perfect. We saw a variety of wildlife. The speed of the boat (what I really came for) was good, some fast times, some slow times. I chose the 9am time to avoid the sun and heat, and that was perfect too. I highly recommend Wild Willy's.

It’s 70 years since Owen Godwin opened his first roadside gator attraction for tourists coming down to Central Florida from the North. The good news is they’re still coming, and more than ever before. The self-proclaimed ‘Alligator Capital of The World’, Gatorland is home to hundreds of Florida’s original residents (the long scaly kind!). Although some of the tourist kitch remains, the family-owned park has gotten very serious about conservation of these remarkable animals and their crocodile cousins. Breeding programs are used with great success to ensure the reproduction of not only Florida’s alligators but also endangered species like the ferocious Cuban Crocodile. The focal point of the park is the Breeding Marsh, a natural Cypress swamp, where the main population of swamp dragons resides. A scenic wooden boardwalk gets you within snapping distance of these scaly sunbathers. Be sure to climb the observation tower for an excellent view of the park and surrounding area.

Don’t worry your trainer will keep you safe but you’ll get to learn about and experience these big boys and have some fun doing it. Be prepared for the unexpected with this exclusive Gatorland Trainer-for-a-Day package!

Shows & Encounters

Gatorland offers a unique, Florida cracker-style alligator wrestling show in a shaded 800-seat stadium.  The Gator Wrestlin’ makes you realize just what some people will do for money. Gator wranglers catch a 6 to 8-foot alligator by hand, climb onto its back and point out interesting survival features. After doing stunts that only a few are brave (or foolish) enough to try, the alligator is rolled over and put to sleep – only to be awakened by a tickle! Guests can have their photo taken with one of the participants. Guess which one!

By far the most unique show is the Jumparoo . Hungry gators leap for chicken appetizers encouraged by the cheers of a fascinated audience. Note that the feeder is chained to his podium to avoid becoming dessert! Don’t miss the very unusual White Gator Exhibit – they are NOT albino they are leucistic (go look it up!) – and Panther Spring where you can get up close with Neiko and Lucy, two stunning examples of this beautiful and endangered species.

Make sure you see Upclose Animal Encounters Show , featuring snakes, spiders and lots of toothy grins (that’s just the handlers)! Befriend fascinating creatures from around the globe, including some of the most dangerous snakes alive!

  • Breeding Marsh – it’s very pretty in a ferocious kind of way!
  • White Gators – freaky and fascinating!
  • Up close Animal Encounters Show – as close as you want to get!
  • Jumparoo Show – you can’t escape without seeing this!
  • Gator Wrestling – getting to grips with some of the locals.
  • Stompin Gator Off Road –  rocking and a rolling!
  • Screaming Gator Zipline – you have to do it!
  • If you’re a keen birdwatcher, March through August a large nesting colony of egrets and herons are in residence as the gators protect the nests from raiding raccoons. You can get some great photos.
  • Take 30 minutes and let your kids cool off over at Gator Gully , a gator free water playground.

Is it suitable for kids?

Yes Gatorland is perfect for kids and young children, with the attractions being child-friendly, and the enthusiastic staff always going the extra mile to make your visit special.

Where To See Alligators in Orlando (or nearby)

Sharing is caring!

Asking if you can see alligators in Florida is like asking if the sky is blue. Alligator sightings are frequent, however, you still need to know where to look because these creatures can be illusive.

Contrary to popular belief, they are quite timid and rather like just lazing in the sun. Alligators usually hunt at night, so getting to see them during the day is quite a treat.

Where to see Alligators in Orlando (or nearby)

With all that being said, there are some popular locations in Orlando and the surrounding areas where you can not only see alligators, but feed them.

Most places are protected areas with an entrance fee, but on the rare occasion that you come across an alligator outside of these attractions, don’t get too close and certainly don’t try to feed it.

Best places to see alligators in Orlando

Table of Contents - Click to View

Miniature Golf (or Putt Putt)

The funniest place (in my family’s opinion) to see alligators is at any one of the myriad local miniature golf courses. In my neighborhood alone near Universal Studios and Disney World , we have no less than a half a dozen choices of putt putt, each with opportunities to not only see the alligators in their free range secure area, but then to also buy some of the speciality gator food to toss into the arena.

Gator Golf Adventure Park on International Drive is one of our favorites. There’s the gator lagoon which follows along the first few holes. They have over 200 alligators in their lagoon and they like to spread out.

For under $10 you can grab a bag of gator food so as you wait for your turn to putt on the first few holes, you can toss the large pellets (which look like balls of coal) in for the gators to enjoy.

Among the other locations, Lost Cavern Adventure Golf as well as Congo River Golf are our two favorites in the area.

AirBoat Tours

One of the safest ways to get to see alligators up close is on an airboat tour. Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures  is one of the best in the area. It’s about 40 minutes south east of Orlando. Most of the trek to get there is on back roads.

Along the way you’ll pass a small local farm featuring a petting zoo with some rabbits, horses, and cats. Feel free to stop and say hi (they love visitors!).

Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed into an old mining town. There are a few different areas where you can pan for precious metals, learn about the Seminole Indians (the indigenous tribe to Central Florida), as well as take a break with a nice cool drink and alligator shaped chocolates (among other delicious treats).

Boggy Creek airboat baby alligators, Orlando, Florida

Stop to see the baby alligators and feed them if you wish…

From there, you board the airboat at your specified time for the 30 minute or 1 hour tour. The airboats hold about 25 people plus the driver. It moves on as little as 3 inches of water which allows for safe passage from the dock around the perimeter of the lake.

Each passenger is given a sturdy pair of noise blocking earphones as the fan that powers the boat is very loud and each person is also given a life vest, just in case. We’ve taken the tour a few different times throughout the year and every time we see some of the most incredible sights.

The first few minutes are all about training your eye to look in the right area of the horizon. Eagles can be seen high up in the trees, small birds of all different species can be seen fishing and bathing in the water, and turtles can usually be seen sunbathing on small rocks.

The driver will point out everything they see, their eyes are used to picking out the little details, and they will even slow the boat down when the animals are a little harder to spot. Finally, you’ll, of course, see a plethora of alligators.

Most are no bigger than 3-4 feet, which we learned means they are about 3-4 years old. As the boats get close, the alligators tend to slip into the water and swim away, but some like to just stare at you as you the boat passes by.

Wild Florida

Wild Florida Everglades Airboat & Wildlife Park is another great place to see alligators on an airboat tour but they also feature a walk through gator park as well as a drive through the safari. Located at the head of the Everglades, their website says, “they have been providing unforgettable experiences since 2010”.

This park is located off of Cypress Lake which is the next lake south of where the Boggy Creek Tours are located. Wild Florida not only features their alligators, but they have up close encounters with a sloth, a porcupine, a lemur, and a capybara.

Guests can pay extra to be able to feed not only these docile animals but the gators as well. However, if you want a little bit more space between you and the animals, their drive through safari is the perfect encounter.

Guests stay in their own car while driving through the 170 acres of land which is home to over 150 animals ranging from giraffes to bison. There is plenty to see and do here for a full day’s experience for everyone in the family.

Where To See Captive Alligators in Orlando

Gatorland is one of the most popular parks in Orlando for getting the whole alligator experience. This amusement park was founded in 1949 by a man named Owen Godwin.

Originally it served as a roadside attraction off of Orange Blossom Trail. The park is still privately owned by his family and they strive to preserve the natural habitat of alligators and crocodiles while including exciting experiences for people of all ages.

Gatorland has many types of animals including wild cats, capybaras, birds, snakes, and turtles. And of course, they have alligators and crocodiles; over 2000 of them to be exact.

The park is over 110 acres in which guests can see shows featuring animal training and feeding time with the alligators, zip line over alligator enclosures, as well as being able to jump on board a 12 foot high custom made safari vehicle for an outrageous 15 minute trek through their swamp.

Fun Spot America

You can also see gators at FunSpot. The gator spot area i s included in your ticket price or can be bought separately for $6.

Old Town Fun Spot, Kissimmee, Florida

Gaylord Palms Resort

Alligators at a hotel resort? Yes, at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center . The resort is home to a vast 4.5 acre glass-enclosed Atrium that recreates three distinct Florida environments: the Everglades, Key West, and St. Augustine.

In the Everglades area, you can get up close and personal with non-venomous snakes, baby alligators, and other native wildlife. You can also learn about the Everglades ecosystem from the resort’s knowledgeable staff. Visit on Tuesdays and Saturdays around 6:30 p.m. for feeding time by the staff at Gatorland.

In the Key West area, you can relax on the beach, go fishing, or take a boat tour. You can also see tropical fish and other marine life in the lagoon.

In the St. Augustine area, you can explore a replica of the Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century Spanish fort. You can also see turtles, alligators, and other animals in the Gator Springs habitat.

Alligators in the Wild

With all that said, keep in mind that Florida is mostly swamplands. Even the built up and populated areas are considered swamplands so the chances of seeing an alligator in the wild is fairly high, especially if you know where to look.

Lake Monroe and Lake Kissimmee are two of the top places where people have reported alligator sightings. Lake Monroe is part of the St. John’s River system and is located north of Orlando in Sanford (about 45 minutes north). Lake Kissimmee is about an hour and 20 minutes south of Lake Monroe.

Winter is the best season for alligator watching as they enjoy warming themselves in the sun.

Alligator sightings are best in the morning when it is still cool enough for them to be out. Along the shores of the lake is where they like to keep watch and as the day warms up they slide into the water to keep cool. Hear some growling sounds – that will be the males trying to attract a mate and is common during Spring?

Alligators do like to keep to themselves, however, there are some key things to remember if and when you do see alligators in the wild.

Things To Remember When You See Wild Alligators In Orlando

1. Do not feed alligators (or any other wild animals).

2. Listen for hissing noises. Alligators have a very distinct hiss they make when they feel threatened and this is your warning that they see you and do not want you there.

3. Heed the warning signs posted. There are usually barriers to keep not only you but the animals safe, so follow the rules.

4. If you do come across an alligator, let it pass.

The best advice given (according to  Real Florida Fun ) is to keep still and allow the alligator to cross where they would like to go.

Swimming safety tips for Florida lakes, including one that could be home to 30,000 gators

To swim or not to swim beware of florida's most alligator-infested lakes during alligator mating season, spring break or summer..

Spring break is right around the corner and summer is right behind it, which means more people swimming, tubing, wakeboarding and skiing in Florida lakes — lakes that more than one million alligators call home.

If you live in Florida, you likely know you have to coexist with alligators . So long as you keep your distance and never feed one if it crosses your path, you should be fine.

There are, however, risks, especially when it comes to water. The largest and most alligator-infested lake in the state has more than 9,000 alligators confirmed to be living in it, with another 21,000 estimated to be lurking in the same water.

If there are signs warning about alligators, heed those warnings.

Here is a list of the most alligator-infested lakes in Florida and swimming safety tips to help you avoid a gator encounter this summer (or year-round).

What lake in Florida has the highest population of alligators?

Each year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission takes a census of 50 alligator-infested places in Florida to gauge how many alligators are living in the state. The FWC says it enlists the help of scientists and biologists who go out on airboats at night to count how many glowing sets of red eyes they see floating on the water.

Counting every gator is not possible, so the exact count and some math magic are used to estimate what the total population likely is for some lakes.

When is alligator mating season?

Alligator mating season can start as early as April, but it's typically between May and June.

Top 5 Florida lakes with the most alligators

Here is a list of the five most alligator-infested lakes in Florida, according to A-Z Animals blog :

  • Lake Okeechobee: 9,308 counted alligators with an estimated population of about 30,000. Lake Okeechobee is Florida's largest freshwater lake and borders Palm Beach County, Martin County, Glades County, Okeechobee County, and Hendry County. It's about 30 miles from Lake Okeechobee or "Lake O" to Port St. Lucie, Florida.
  • Orange Lake: 2,732 alligators . Orange Lake is in Alachua County and about 20 miles to Gainesville. Coincidentally, the University of Florida mascot is an alligator, the school is home to the Florida Gators, and its colors are orange and blue.
  • Lake George: 2,660 alligators. Lake George, or Lake Welaka to some, is in Volusia County on the St. Johns River, north of Orlando and south of Jacksonville. It's about 15 miles from Crescent City, Florida.
  • Lake Jesup: 2,414 alligators with an estimated population as high as 13,000. Lake Jesup is in Seminole County and about 12 miles from Orlando Sanford International Airport.
  • Lake Kissimmee: 2,065 alligators. Lake Kissimmee is in Osceola County and Polk County and about 20 miles from Lake Wales, Florida. Though Kissimmee is in its name, Lake Kissimmee is about 55 miles away from Kissimmee, Florida.

Top 10 most alligator-infested lakes in the U.S. Psst, Florida is in there, a lot

In November 2023, A-Z Animals listed the Top 10 lakes in the U.S. that contain alligators and a lot of Florida lakes made the list.

Lake George, Lake Jesup, Alligator Lake, Lake Kissimmee, Lake Okeechobee, Lake Poinsett, Sawgrass Lake

Caddo Lake, Cypress Lake

Lake Lewisville

Swimming safety tips: What to do if you see an alligator ? What are alligator escape tips?

Though Florida residents have learned to coexist with alligators, the potential for conflict always exists, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The wildlife commission recommends people avoid feeding alligators and to keep your distance if you see one. "Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours. And keep pets on a leash and away from the water," FWC's site states.

If you're already swimming and see an alligator while you're in the water, calmly swim in the other direction and get out of the water. Don't splash around, this will attract the alligator.

According to the FWC, "If an alligator bites you, the best thing to do is fight back, providing as much noise and resistance as possible. Hitting or kicking the alligator or poking it in its eyes may cause it to release its grip. When alligators seize prey they cannot easily overpower, they will often let go and retreat."

You can also trigger a gator's gag reflex by shoving objects into the back of its mouth, if you have to. If it gags and tries to reposition its grip on you, that's your window to make an escape.

Serious injuries caused by alligators are rare  here, but if you are concerned about a gator, call the nuisance alligator hot line at 866-392-4286 or visit  myfwc.com .

How do you escape an alligator attack? What is the best way to get away from a gator?

Native Floridians learn as early as preschool to run away in a zig-zag line upon encountering a gator, but this has actually been debunked. Gators can run fast on land, but only in short distances before they get tired. Simply run away in a straight line.

If you find yourself tempted to take a night swim in a lake, river, pond or any natural body of fresh water, just don't. If the sun is down, the gators are out.

If you're walking or relaxing beside a lake, pond or river with your dog or cat, keep them at least 10 feet away from the shore and on a leash.

This should go without saying, but never feed an alligator. You definitely don't want this wild animal to associate you with food.

Can you shoot an alligator in your yard in Florida?

Don't try to "take care" of any gators yourself. If you don't have a permit to be hunting gators, you can't shoot one. And, depending on where you live, just by firing gun you may be breaking other local laws.

Under Florida law, it's a third-degree felony  to "intentionally kill, injure, possess or capture, or attempt to kill, injure, possess or capture an alligator or other crocodilian, or the eggs of an alligator or other crocodilian, unless authorized by rules of the commission."

The Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program trappers relocate gators under 4 feet long and kills nuisance gators that are longer than 4 feet.

"Relocated alligators often try to return to their capture site," according to the SNAP website. "They can create problems for people or other alligators along the way. If an alligator successfully returns, capturing it again would be necessary and likely more difficult the second time."

Watch: massive alligator lunges at golfers along cart path in florida, share this article.

A golf cart driver got the shock of a lifetime when he almost ran over an alligator that instantly expressed its displeasure over the encounter.

A homeowner in the community caught the whole thing on video.

Denise Prues had spotted the alligator walking between two homes toward a pond behind the houses when the encounter took place.

Alligators are no strangers to Florida and have often been spotted in swimming pools and even on porches.

In February 2023, an 85-year-old woman on Florida’s East Coast was killed by an alligator that attacked her and her dog from a community pond not that different from the recent encounter.

Prues heard a noise in her side yard before she spotted an alligator Feb. 16 walking between two homes in Ave Maria, which is near Fort Myers, heading toward a pond behind the homes.

Between the homes and the pond was a path used by golf carts.

One driver apparently never spotted the alligator.

The second wasn’t so lucky.

The video shows the gator picking up speed as it neared the path, right in front of the golf cart. The driver quickly swerved to miss the alligator, which lunged at the cart.

Prues could be heard behind the camera saying, “Oh my god!”

Cheeky? Responses to gator and golf cart video, even from UK

“Heart-stopping moment alligator lunges toward cart on Florida golf course leaving driver heading for a pond as he veers off path,” was the United Kingdom’s Daily Mail’s headline.

“The alligator can be seen cheekily running up to the cart, before taking a snap dangerously close to the passenger as the vehicle makes its way past the stretch of water.”

“Ah, Florida. The land of freedom, tropical vibes … and alligators who won’t hesitate to take a chomp out of you,” said the Daily Caller.

Living with alligators in Florida

Although the exact alligator population is unknown, the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates there are about 1.3 million alligators of every size in Florida.

Alligators can be found in all 67 counties in Florida.

Alligators are opportunistic feeders and will eat any animal that is readily available. They prefer to go after prey they can overpower easily, the FWC said.
