2024 season
Our new ranking of every PGA Tour course—from best to worst
There are plenty of reasons why a course is selected to host a PGA Tour event beyond its architectural merits. Of course, the layout must sufficiently test the best players in the world, but the regional market, logistics and history all play important roles in landing a tour event as well.
That said, it’s no secret the tour travels to many of our country’s finest courses. Of the 32 events played in the United States during the 2024 PGA Tour season, 16 are currently ranked on at least one of Golf Digest's national rankings— America's 100 Greatest , Second 100 Greatest and 100 Greatest Public .
In this guide, we rank the 32 U.S. courses that will host a PGA Tour event or major championship this season, based on the scores from our 1,800 course-ranking panelists. (This list only includes events played in the U.S.—there are five international events scheduled this season. Also note that we only rank the primary course at multi-course events such as Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach.)
More From Golf Digest
You might be surprised how the architectural merits of a layout don’t always align with the prestige of the tour event played there. Our panelists evaluate courses on seven scoring criteria, ranging from Shot Options and Layout Variety to Conditioning and Aesthetics .
Scroll on for the complete ranking, and be sure to click through to each individual course page for bonus photography and reviews from our course panelists. We also encourage you to leave your own ratings on the courses you’ve played … so you can make your case for why a course should be higher or lower on our rankings.
1. Augusta National Golf Club (Masters Tournament)
Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta, ga.
- 100 Greatest
- Best In State
There will be no surprise with the No. 1 course on this list. Augusta National has been ranked first, second or third on our biennial America's 100 Greatest Courses ranking in each edition. The club made a significant change in the fall of 2022, lengthening the par-5 13th hole by about 30 yards . No club has tinkered with its golf course as often or as effectively over the decades as has Augusta National Golf Club, mainly to keep it competitive for the annual Masters Tournament, an event it has conducted since 1934, with time off during WWII. All that tinkering has resulted in an amalgamation of design ideas, with a routing by Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones, some Perry Maxwell greens, some Trent Jones water hazards, some Jack Nicklaus mounds and swales and, most recently, extensive rebunkering and tree planting by Tom Fazio. The tinkering continued in the summer of 2018 as the club lengthened the par-4 fifth by extending its back tee on newly acquired land. Soon to come, the lengthening of the famed par-5 13th.

10. Kapalua: Plantation (The Sentry)
Kapalua: Plantation
Lahaina, hi.
From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten: Most golf fans are familiar with Kapalua Golf Club’s Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour's opening event each year. Located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Plantation was built from open, windswept pineapple fields on the pronounced slope of a volcano and is irrigated by sprinklers pressured solely by gravity. As the first design collaboration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it unveiled their joint admiration for old-style courses. The blind drive on the fourth, the cut-the-corner drives on the fifth and sixth are all based on tee shots found at National Golf Links. So, too, are its punchbowl green and strings of diagonal bunkers. It's also a massive course, built on a huge scale, Coore says, to accommodate the wind and the slope and the fact that it gets mostly resort play.

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Challenger/Champion
Orlando, fl.
From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten: I've always been fascinated by the design of Bay Hill, Arnold Palmer's home course for over 45 years (although Tiger Woods owns it, competitively-speaking, as he's won there eight times.) For one thing, it's rather hilly, a rarity in Florida (although not in the Orlando market) and dotted with sinkhole ponds incorporated in the design in dramatic ways.
I always thought the wrap-around-a-lake par-5 sixth was Dick Wilson's version of Robert Trent Jones's decade-older 13th at The Dunes Club at Myrtle Beach. Each of the two rivals had claimed the other was always stealing his ideas. But the hole I like best at Bay Hill is the par-4 eighth, a lovely dogleg-right with a diagonal green perched above a small circular pond. OK, I admit that it reminds me of the sixth at Hazeltine National, another Trent Jones product, but I don't think Wilson picked Trent's pocket on this one, as both courses were built about the same time, in the early 1960s.

Innisbrook Resort: Copperhead

PGA National Resort: Champion
Palm beach gardens, fl.
One of five courses at PGA National, the Champion Course has hosted the Honda Classic since 2007. (The event dates back to 1972, though with Honda pulling out as a tournament sponsor, the event is in question going forward.) Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for tournament play, Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 2014, creating the infamous three-hole stretch aptly named "The Bear Trap." Routinely one of the toughest courses on tour, The Champion is a true ball-striking test that plays a lot differently than most courses, where winning scores push over 20 under par.

Rory mcilroy doesn’t see pga tour-liv golf divide as sustainable: ‘need to be a correction’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Rory Mcllroy expressed concern for the health of the game of golf as the split between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf continued.
In an interview with Golf Week, Mcllroy viewed the situation as unsustainable and described things as not benefiting anyone while explaining how unfortunate it is that the best golfers play on separate tours for a good portion of the year.
“There needs to be a correction. I think what’s happening is not sustainable right now, so something needs to happen to try to bring it all back together so we can all move forward so we don’t have this division that’s sort of ongoing,” McIlroy told the outlet, per Reuters . “They keep going down those different paths and I just don’t see how that benefits anyone in the long run. … I think [it’s] a shame for the overall game of golf.”
Merger talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been ongoing, but there have been little in any substantive updates from either side regarding those plans.
The PGA Tour did secure a $3 billion investment deal with Strategic Sports Group (SSG), a consortium of U.S sports team owners, which includes Mets owner Steve Cohen, in January.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan told reporters last month that the PGA Tour would be willing to move forward with just SSG if the LIV deal isn’t able to be figured out.
And any hope of getting something secured between the two sides still seems far off to Mcllroy.
”We’re probably still quite a long ways from it, but I would hope that in the future that we can get there, unify the game and get the best players back together again,” he said.
Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley didn’t sound too optimistic about a merger deal getting done quickly either, he said during an interview on RTE Radio 1.
“Don’t hold your breath,” he said during the interview, according to The Daily Mirror . “I think both parties are still wide away from each other in terms of where the common ground is.”

How to livestream PGA Tour golf: Your options, explained (plus 2024 schedule)
By Meredith Gordon
March 6, 2024 / 3:18 PM EST / Essentials
CBS Essentials is created independently of the CBS News editorial staff. We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms.
The 2024 PGA Tour is in full bloom, as the top male golfers compete on some of the world's most storied golf courses. Early in the season, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy have already established themselves at the top of the leaderboard , with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland nipping at their cleats.
Figuring out how to watch and stream each tournament can prove as difficult as trying to outshoot Scheffler. While we can't help you with your golf game, we can take the guesswork out of finding out how to watch every golf tournament on the 2024 PGA Tour.
What network carries the 2024 PGA Tour
The 2024 PGA Tour will broadcast live on Golf Channel, CBS, NBC and ESPN. The PGA Tour will stream on ESPN+ and the live TV streaming services listed below. Not every channel will air every event.
CBS broadcasts an average of 20 weekend events per PGA Tour season, while NBC broadcasts weekend coverage of the PGA Tour for an average of 10 events each season. Golf Channel broadcasts early-round and morning weekend coverage of all PGA Tour events -- as well as weekend events not covered on broadcast TV. Golf Channel also carries primetime replays of all PGA Tour events.
The final three tournaments of the FedEx Cup playoffs alternate each year between CBS and NBC.
How to watch the 2024 PGA Tour without cable
If you don't have a cable subscription, or your cable coverage doesn't include NBC or CBS, ESPN+ streams every PGA Tour event of the 2024 season. You can also stream NBC-aired tournaments on Peacock and CBS-aired tournaments on Paramount+, or catch the live feed of network coverage through one of the live TV streaming platforms featured below.
Watch the PGA Tour free with Fubo
You can also catch all network-aired PGA Tour events (both CBS and NBC), plus Golf Channel-aired events, on Fubo . Fubo is a sports-centric streaming service that offers access to every PGA Tour event in 2024, every network-aired NBA and MLB game and almost every NFL game next season. Packages include CBS, CBS Sports Network, Fox, NBC, ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, NFL Network and more, so you'll be able to watch more than just PGA Tour golf this season, all without a cable subscription.
Sports fans will want to consider adding on the $7.99 per month Fubo Extra package, which includes MLB Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, Tennis Channel, SEC Network and more channels. Or upgrade to the Fubo Elite tier and get all the Fubo Extra channels, plus the ability to stream in 4K.
To watch the 2024 PGA Tour without cable, start a seven-day free trial of Fubo. You can begin watching immediately on your TV, phone, tablet or computer. Fubo's Pro Tier is priced at $80 per month after your free seven-day trial while Fubo Elite is $90, though the streamer is currently offering $20 off your first month of service on any tier.
Top features of Fubo Pro Tier:
- There are no contracts with Fubo -- you can cancel at any time.
- The Pro tier has 185 channels, including the Golf Channel.
- The Fubo lookback feature allows you to watch sporting events up to 72 hours after they air live.
- Fubo includes all the channels you'll need to watch college and pro football, including CBS (not available through Sling TV).
- All tiers come with 1,000 hours of cloud-based DVR recording.
- Stream on your TV, phone, and other devices.
Stream CBS-aired PGA Tour events on Paramount+
If you don't have a cable TV package that includes CBS, one of the easiest ways to catch all PGA Tour events broadcast on CBS is through a subscription to Paramount+ with Showtime. The streamer offers access to PGA golf tournaments, plus all NFL games locally and nationally televised on CBS. In addition, you can watch top-tier soccer like the Champions League live and SEC college football games as well, plus popular shows such as "Survivor" and "NCIS."
A subscription to Paramount + with Showtime is $11.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. You won't be able to catch live PGA Golf with a Paramount+ Essential subscription, but you can catch live CBS-aired NFL games with the Paramount+ lower tier.
Note: CBS Essentials and Paramount+ are both subsidiaries of Paramount.
Start watching Paramount+ free on Amazon Prime Video
Paramount+ content, including live sports, is available to stream on Amazon Prime via a Paramount+ with Showtime on Prime Video add-on subscription. Prime Video also carries some of the best sports docs, including "Kelce," which documents Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce's (assumed) last season in the league.
Amazon is offering a seven-day free trial of Paramount+ with Showtime . Tap the button below to start your trial and start streaming now for free. After the free trial period ends, a subscription to the Paramount+ with Showtime tier is $11.99 per month.
Watch every 2024 PGA Tour event with Hulu+ Live TV
You can watch the 2024 PGA Tour, plus NFL football in 2024 including the NFL Network, with Hulu + Live TV . The bundle features access to 90 channels, including both NBC and CBS. Unlimited DVR storage is also included. Watch every tournament on each network with Hulu + Live TV, plus catch live 2024 NFL preseason games, exclusive live regular season games, popular studio shows (including NFL Total Access and the Emmy-nominated show Good Morning Football) and lots more.
Hulu + Live TV comes bundled with ESPN+ and Disney+ for $77 monthly.
Stream the 2024 PGA Tour on Sling TV for half price
If you don't have cable TV that includes NBC and CBS, one of the most cost-effective ways to stream live PGA golf this year is through a subscription to Sling TV . The streamer also offers access to the NFL Network, local NBC, Fox and ABC affiliates (where available) and ESPN with its Orange + Blue Tier plan. Also worth noting: Sling TV comes with 50 hours of cloud-based DVR recording space included, perfect for recording all the season's top golf tournaments.
Sling TV does not carry CBS-aired content. To use your Sling TV subscription to watch the entire 2024 PGA Tour, you can upgrade your subscription to get the Golf Channel, which carries nearly every 2024 PGA Tour tournament.
The Orange + Blue Tier plan normally costs $60 per month, but the streamer is currently offering a 50% off promotion for your first month, so you'll pay just $30. You can add the Golf Channel, NBA TV, NHL Network, NFL RedZone, MLB Network, Tennis Channel and more sports-oriented channels (25 in total) via the Sling TV Sports Extra add-on. These channels will cost you an additional $15 per month. You can learn more by tapping the button below.
Top features of Sling TV Orange + Blue tier:
- There are 46 channels to watch in total, including local NBC, Fox and ABC affiliates (where available).
- You get access to most local NFL games and nationally broadcast games at the lowest price.
- All subscription tiers include 50 hours of cloud-based DVR storage.
Watch NBC-aired 2024 PGA Tour events on Peacock
Peacock offers its subscribers live-streaming access to PGA Tour events that air on NBC, while also giving access to NFL games airing on NBC and Peacock-exclusive NFL games next season. The streaming service has plenty more live sports to offer, including Big Ten football, Premier League soccer and WWE wrestling (including formerly PPV-only events such as Wrestlemania). There are 80,000 hours worth of recorded content to watch as well, including hit movies and TV series such as "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation."
A Peacock subscription costs $6 per month. An annual plan is available for $60 per year. You can cancel anytime.
Top features of Peacock:
- If you want to watch the entire 2024 PGA Tour, there are better choices featured in this article, giving you more access to more PGA golf this year.
- Peacock features plenty of current and classic NBC and Bravo TV shows.
Stream every 2024 PGA Tour event on ESPN+
ESPN+ is ESPN's subscription streaming platform , which offers exclusive live events, original studio shows and top-tier series that aren't accessible on the ESPN networks. ESPN+ subscribers may purchase UFC PPV events and access the platform's vast archive of on-demand content, including the entire 30 For 30 catalog, game replays and select ESPN films.
It is important to note that ESPN+ does not include access to the ESPN network. It is a separate sports-centric service, with separate sports programming.
Top features of ESPN+ :
- The PGA Tour and the Masters.
- Exclusive fantasy sports tools and content from some of the sports world's most respected voices in sports.
- Every Fight Night UFC event UFC PPV event (PPV events are subject to an additional charge).

Watch the 2024 PGA Tour with an HDTV digital antenna
You can also watch the 2024 PGA Tour on TV with an affordable indoor antenna, which pulls in local over-the-air HDTV channels such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS, Univision and more. Here's the kicker: There's no monthly charge.
For anyone living in partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or first-floor apartments), a digital TV antenna may not pick up a good signal -- or any signal at all. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna provides a seriously inexpensive way to watch the 2024 PGA Tour without paying a cable company. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable.
This amplified digital antenna with a 300-mile range can receive hundreds of HD TV channels, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, FOX, Univision and can filter out cellular and FM signals. It delivers a high-quality picture in 1080p HDTV, top-tier sound and features an 18-foot digital coax cable.

A total solar eclipse will cross a large section of the U.S. on April 8, and up to 4 million people are expected to travel to be in the “path of totality” for the rare event. It will pump an estimated $1 billion into local economies.
Best places to see the April 8 solar eclipse in the totality path
The total solar eclipse will be visible along a 2,500-mile path. Meteorologists are closely monitoring the latest models, but historical data suggests those hoping to view the corona and see a fully darkened midday sky may find themselves dodging clouds due to April weather patterns.

The shotlink system is a revolutionary platform for collecting and disseminating scoring and statistical data on every shot by every player in real-time., the vision of the system is to:.
"Turn data into information, information into knowledge, and knowledge into entertainment."
The TOUR implemented its first electronic scoreboard system in 1983. This initial program provided 19 electronic scoreboards on-site at each PGA TOUR event. The system was supported by a proprietary data collection device and two mini-computers.
The scoreboard system was upgraded in 1987 to use a wireless device for data collection and an official record keeping system was introduced at the tournament site to record the scoring for historical purposes.

The future of shotlink: more tours, more stats, more videos and fans in control, share this article.
Collin Morikawa was not walking the fairways at the Albany Golf Club or hanging out at the beach the Monday before the Hero World Challenge, Tiger Woods’ event in the Bahamas. He was 15 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Strip at TPC Summerlin, along with Michelle Wie West, Max Homa, Danielle Kang, Harry Higgs, David Duval, Graeme McDowell and a host of other PGA Tour and LPGA Tour players.
Caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay was there, too, as the emcee of the first AWS Golf Invitational, a corporate pro-am for Amazon Web Services and Deloitte VIPs in town for a massive conference. And all of them were about to become guinea pigs for new technology that potentially could change how golf fans watch and interact with the sport and data on multiple tours.
The PGA Tour is king of the mountain when it comes to collecting data from all the shots players hit during most Tour events. Using ShotLink, developed in 2003, the Tour can provide fans with detailed information about where players hit the ball, all in or close to real time. It’s an expensive system that requires a lot of boots on the ground to produce, and currently, ShotLink is out of reach for the PGA Tour Champions, Korn Ferry Tour and the LPGA Tour.

To make similar data available beyond the PGA Tour, the Tour is working to develop a lighter, less-expensive shot-tracking and statistics platform for the Korn Ferry Tour and Champions Tour while simultaneously developing the next generation of ShotLink.
Enter Amazon Web Services and those pros and pro-am guests at TPC Summerlin — site of the PGA Tour’s Shriners Children’s Open — all there on behalf of AWS. They were part of a beta test of the new system, and I was the only reporter on-site to get a first look at a system that might revolutionize how golf fans are able to interact with the sport on multiple tours.
It’s all part of a plan to help the PGA Tour and other tours attract new viewers through enhanced engagement, something fans have already received a taste of, using a combination of ShotLink and Amazon’s vast computing network, and through a new alternative system that might best be described as ShotLink Lite.
In March the PGA Tour announced it was entering a new partnership with AWS and gave golf lovers a preview. During the 2021 Players Championship – while another Tour partner, CDW, helped it gather data on the course – AWS powered Every Shot Live, an OTT platform that gave fans the ability to see every shot hit by each player in a tournament. That was more than 32,000 shots in real time, a massively complex data and computing job. AWS’ powerful cloud-based tools and infrastructure helped make it possible.
Coming soon to more tours
A golfer wearing the PGA Tour’s new wearable device (David Dusek/Golfweek)
Ken Lovell, the PGA Tour’s senior vice president of golf technology, has been thinking about how to shrink the demands of ShotLink and make it easier to gather data. Ideally, he wants to use fewer people, make the system easier to set up and deliver it all at a cost that makes it viable for organizations that do not have the PGA Tour’s deep pockets.
At the AWS Golf Invitational pro-am, every player, including the pros, wore a small black device clipped to his or her belt or waistband. The 3D-printed box contained a GPS sensor and other electronic components. Using data collected by the device and information collected by a walking scorer and TrackMan launch monitors, the goal was to see if TourCast-style information could be gathered.
Each pro in a Korn Ferry or Champions Tour event would need to wear one of the new sensors for the system to work. Would the numbers be as to-the-inch accurate as the PGA Tour’s ShotLink system? No. But according to Lovell, the system could determine a player’s position within one club length, which is more than what is currently collected.
The team already had used this system to gather data using a handful of Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Champions players. Those small tests went well. This pro-am test would see if the system could track 90 golfers at once in a scramble format with a shot-gun start, without the vast infrastructure needed for a typical Tour event.
I had a chance to try the next generation of ShotLink in Las Vegas last week alongside @david59duval and @HV3_Golf . Some very cool stuff is coming soon. pic.twitter.com/h0dwYbNuR9 — David Dusek (@Golfweek_Dusek) December 9, 2021
As the morning progressed, drinks and laughter flowed. No one had a problem wearing the sensor. The sensor was no issue for me, but with major winners Duval and Jimmy Walker watching me on the 10th tee (my first hole of the day), I was so nervous I topped my opening tee shot. However, I redeemed myself with my wedge play and, as the system verified, my putter was hot.
Making a 19-foot birdie putt helped the author overcome a humiliating opening tee shot. (PGA Tour)
Like most beta tests, some hiccups and issues arose throughout the day, but Lovell and his team were pleased with how things went.
The PGA Tour hopes to make the wearable sensor smaller and have this system fully operational and in use by mid-summer on the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour Champions. That means that for the first time those tours would have statistics that go beyond counting metrics like fairways hit, greens in regulation and putting average.
If Lovell and his team can make this work, they could also be on the verge of making it feasible for tours like the LPGA to provide stats and shot-tracking to players and fans.
The not-to-distant future
The PGA Tour’s ShotLink system was created in the early 2000s. (Chris Cox/Getty Images)
As for the future of the PGA Tour’s ShotLink, this is what should get PGA Tour fans most excited.
The current ShotLink system was developed nearly 20 years ago, and while some improvements have been made, the world of technology has evolved and fan expectations have changed. Golf lovers want video, stats and control – all in real time.
As Lovell puts it, the challenge is that he and his team must create the next ShotLink system that can deliver all that while simultaneously maintaining the current system. It’s akin to building a plane mid-flight while not tinkering with a system that has served fans well since its creation.
The goal is to have the Every Shot Live experience that golf lovers experienced during the 2021 Players Championship become the standard. Right now, ShotLink only captures data on one course during multi-course tournaments, but the Tour aspires to collect data on each at events such as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Farmers Insurance Open. All that will take streamlined logistics, enhanced software and telecommunications networks, as well as more cameras, new sensors and lots of expensive, high-tech equipment.
Francessca Vasquez is the vice president of technology for AWS. Her company’s machine-learning capabilities and analytics tools are being used by several sports leagues, including Formula One and the National Football League, which uses AWS to develop next-generation statistics like those in the company’s commercials.
“We are in an evolution right now regarding how content gets created and how it gets distributed and what the experience is like,” said Vasquez, who not only plays golf but happily will tell you she plays the same pink Ping driver that Bubba Watson uses. “I think for the PGA Tour, they are trying to get that experience to their existing fan base, but there is an entire population that is not in the fan base right now that they want to be able to go out and acquire.
“To me, it is not one pillar that we are focused on. We are focused on engagement and who we have today, but we are also looking at how we can make the fan experience more enhanced, and in the process, how do we attract and acquire more fans who might not traditionally be into golf.”
To do that, AWS and the PGA Tour are creating a massive data repository that contains petabytes of previously shot footage and data. To give that figure some reference, a modern smartphone might have 128 or 256 gigabytes of storage, which is enough to hold about 50 Hollywood films. It takes 1,000 gigabytes to create a terabyte, and one thousand terabytes equals one petabyte. Added all together, it is years of video, audio and other data.
As it gets sorted and added to the system to make it accessible to all AWS’ systems and tools, the PGA Tour can start using it in new and better ways, with an aim for it to flow into the system. That will allow the Tour to focus on developing new, fan-focused ways of seeing the game.
For example, in the not-too-distant future, the Tour could use AWS’ facial recognition tools to help cameras recognize players. So, whenever a camera spots Jordan Spieth, the AWS-enabled system could add the footage to a Spieth collection of content, tag it with a location and searchable keywords, then make it available to fans. Want to see all of Spieth’s putts from between 10 and 15 feet? Easy. All of his tee shots on par 3s? No problem. Every eagle, here you go. And all of it can be done faster and with fewer people involved in the process.
The system is not there yet, but according to Vasquez and Lovell, those are the kinds of things AWS and the PGA Tour want to deliver.
“The biggest area that I think the Tour wants to focus on is the all-around experience,” Vasquez said. “There will be new capabilities for things like StatCast and leaderboards, but the real value beyond just the data is creating an experience where end users feel like they are there.”
So while the PGA Tour works to bring data gathering and more stats to more tours in the weeks and months ahead, the future of how golf fans experience the game looks to have an even brighter future ahead.
(Editor’s note: This article has been updated to better illustrate the relationship between Tour partners CDW and AWS.)

PGA Tour completes $3B deal amid LIV merger talks

The PGA Tour has reached a deal with Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of billionaire sports team owners, to infuse up to $3 billion into a new for-profit entity, PGA Tour Enterprises, that was officially launched Wednesday, the tour announced.
Under the terms of the deal, Strategic Sports Group, which is being led by Fenway Sports Group, would make an initial investment of $1.5 billion with the possibility of another $1.5 billion coming later. The PGA Tour will control the for-profit company.
The tour said in a news release that the deal with SSG allows for a co-investment from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, subject to all necessary regulatory approvals.
The PGA Tour said nearly 200 of its members would have access to a "first-of-its-kind" program that would allow them to become equity holders in PGA Tour Enterprises. The members would collectively have access to more than $1.5 billion in equity grants, which will vest over time. The size of grants will be determined by a tiered system based on "career accomplishments, recent achievements, future participation and services and PGA Tour membership status."
The equity program would be available only to qualified PGA Tour players.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan provided details of the deal with members of the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Champions in a conference call Wednesday.
"Today marks an important moment for the PGA Tour and fans of golf across the world," Monahan said in a statement. "By making PGA Tour members owners of their league, we strengthen the collective investment of our players in the success of the PGA Tour. Fans win when we all work to deliver the best in sports entertainment and return the focus to the incredible -- and unmatched -- competitive atmosphere created by our players, tournaments and partners.
"And partnering with SSG -- a group with extensive experience and investment across sports, media and entertainment -- will enhance our organization's ability to make the sport more rewarding for players, tournaments, fans and partners."
Monahan will serve as CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises, according to the release.
The PGA Tour policy board unanimously approved the deal, according to the release, including player directors Patrick Cantlay , Peter Malnati , Adam Scott , Webb Simpson , Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods .
"We were proud to vote in unanimous support of this historic partnership between PGA Tour Enterprises and SSG," the player directors said in a joint statement. "It was incredibly important for us to create opportunities for the players of today and in the future to be more invested in their organization, both financially and strategically. This not only further strengthens the Tour from a business perspective, but it also encourages the players to be fully invested in continuing to deliver -- and further enhance -- the best in golf to our fans."
The SSG consortium of owners includes Tom Werner and John Henry of the Boston Red Sox , Mark Attanasio ( Milwaukee Brewers ), Arthur Blank ( Atlanta Falcons ), Wyc Grousbeck ( Boston Celtics ) and Steve Cohen ( New York Mets ). SSG will provide "strategic focus on maximizing revenue generation for the benefit of the players and on finding opportunities to enhance the game of golf across the world."
"Our enthusiasm for this new venture stems from a very deep respect for this remarkable game and a firm belief in the expansive growth potential of the PGA Tour," Henry, principal owner of the Fenway Sports Group, said in a statement. "We are proud to partner with this historic institution and are eager to work with the PGA Tour and its many members to grow and strengthen the game of golf globally."
Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Red Sox, Liverpool FC and Pittsburgh Penguins , will serve as a commercial adviser to PGA Tour Enterprises.
The PGA Tour is continuing its negotiations to finalize an agreement with the Public Investment Fund and the DP World Tour, which would potentially inject additional billions of dollars into PGA Tour Enterprises, sources said. The tour said it is making progress in its ongoing negotiations with PIF on a "potential future investment and both parties are working towards an ultimate agreement."
The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and PIF signed a framework agreement in June to combine their commercial assets, including the LIV Golf League. The agreement had a Dec. 31 deadline, which was extended as the sides continued to hammer out final details. Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan reportedly met in Saudi Arabia last week.
The proposed alliance with the PIF and DP World Tour has already drawn the scrutiny of Congress and the U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division.
The future of LIV Golf, which has continued to poach PGA Tour players in recent months, including Masters champion Jon Rahm and England's Tyrrell Hatton , is one of the sticking points in the negotiations with the PIF. The Saudis have been insistent that team golf remain a part of the sport's future, sources said.
