1. Dark Sky

2. Bend it like a local

The Banana Bender Pub is one quirky location that you have to stop for a cold one on the Bruce Highway Palmview and if you time it right you can witness the dunny races each year in winter on the Sunshine Coast. You can just tell it is going to be quirky!

Why is it called the Banana Bender?

The term derives from the joking notion (as perceived from the southern states of Australia) that Queenslanders spend their time putting bends into bananas. An article from 15 July 1937 in the Queenslander provides a forerunner to the term when a man is asked by the Queen what his occupation is: “I’m a banana-bender”.

3. Sunshine Coast Ballooning

Sunshine Coast Ballooning fly daily over the amazing Noosa and Sunshine Coast hinterland and is a highlight on on our Sunshine Coast Experiences page.  Up early before daylight, the team will transfer you to the launch site to experience the amazing sensation of filling the hotair balloon and then a lighter than air flight, as the sunrises.  Drifting and hearing only bird calls and the rush of air to lift the craft it is all quite surreal and one to remember for a lifetime. Included is a fantastic A La Carte breakfast and the traditional post-flight champagne to cheers your morning on high!

5. Eumundi Markets

On a Saturday and Wednesday make your way to Eumundi Markets for the regions largest artisan Market and one of the most famous Sunshine Coast Experiences in all the land. For a wander and a little grazing this is one to pop onto your list as well as a stroll through the township of Eumundi and maybe a cold beverage at the iconic hotel across the road.

6. The Ginger Factory

The Ginger Factory is a great experience to combine with a market trip being in Yandina just before Eumundi going north. It is a venue full of colour and fun especially for the kids and lovers of all things ginger. The Ginger Flower and Food Weekend is usually each January on the Sunshine Coast. It is also home to explore The Zog Trail Journey through our free rainforest and follow the trail in search of Princess Pearl, Madam Dragon, Zog and his friends with this new augmented reality app.

We got to experience this adventure from Montville Mountain Inn on the Main St of Montville, to Flamehill Winery. There were hoots of laughter all along the way! This is a perfect team or family experience, you can take in Mountain View Rd and The Maleny Botanic Gardens on tour. Or ride along the coastal paths that wind for miles from Alexandra Headland to Noosa. Or if you are based in Caloundra for a stay the bikes are a perfect way to beach hop along our coastal paths.

10.Ricks Garage – Palmwoods

Number 10 Experiences Sunshine Coast, is all about cruising and keeping it cool in Palmwoods. A great destination if you love taking the motorbike, classic car or the Ferrari on the circuit from Maleny to Montville and down the Hunchy, for a drive on one of Australia’s most scenic roadways. Iconic retro rocks feels every day of the week with burgers and that little bit more at Ricks Garage

We love the whiskey bar, they will climb the whiskey library ladder to your special selection of the day.

11. Creative Tours

12. Kite Thrills – Learn something new!

Have you ever watched the kite surfers and wondered how you can get involved?

Kitethrills is the Sunshine Coasts only council approved school, you can holiday and learn a new adventure sport if you are not one for just chilling all day. Caloundra is a most beautiful part of the world and only 40 minutes from Maleny. We can sit and watch them for hours scooting across the waves

13.Bills Boat Hire

Discover Golden Beach and the Pumicestone Passage, you can hire a boat or kayak and drift down the passage between Caloundra and Bribie with Bills Boat Hire Service .

With the new split in Bribie Island you can land on the Northern Tip of Bribie, with calm, blue lagoon waters and an expanse of isolated beach to explore.  Or drive over to get a closer look at the new Bribie Island Breakthrough and enjoy the native bush setting on the Western side of the Island.

A BBQ Pontoon boat is really popular in summer for the whole family and those sunsets are pretty amazing from the water. Or you may love the idea of doing a spot of fishing in a tinny or hire a standup paddle board for the morning and cruise along looking at rays, fish, sand crabs or the black swans and birdlife of the passage.

You have a choice of BBQ Pontoon Boats with luxury seating and clear drops blinds, Half Cabin, Tinnie Fishing Boats, Double and Single Kayaks, Stand Up Paddle Boards or the 4 Wheeler Family Bike.

Bills Boat Hire was established in 1956 and know this area like the back of their hands they can advise you on everything you need and the best times to venture out.

14. Big Kart Track

This one has been a favourite for many years and always adds a little friendly rivalry to your stay with some time spent at the Big Kart Track . Drive on out to Landsborough right opposite the Ewan Maddock Dam and get ready to race on the largest commercial go karting track in Australia.

15. Coastal Cruises Mooloolaba

Coastal Cruises have created an entertaining cruising experience that offers fresh local seafood, served onboard direct from the seafood market. Enjoy a selection of hot or cold seafood local reef fish or a seafood platter for two . The seafood is sensational and the views and waterways magic!

See the sights along Mooloolaba Beach and the Esplanade on land. And then splash down into the water to experience the beauty of Mooloolah River, the wharf and canals.

17. Tree Top Challenge Sunshine Coast

Located at the Big Pineapple the Tree Top Challenge is the highest, largest and most thrilling high ropes adventure park in Australia!!!

With 120 epic challenges, 12 massive flying foxes(ziplines), stretching between 20 and 140m and one across water! With heights for everybody from 3m to 35m off the ground. Suspended in 10acres of stunning rainforest there are 6 courses to tackle, from easy first time courses, to the Black Diamond extreme course.

18. Sunshine Coast Afloat

If you are celebrating a milestone event this could be perfect for you and your group, offering a variety of marine activities out of Mooloolaba – ranging from private & public cruises, whale watching, celebrations, intimate weddings, corporate day cruises and other activities.

Sunshine Coast Afloat is a large 55 ft open deck vessel so you can drift into the coastal vibe and views or head up onto the bow and enjoy relaxing on the bean bags with a cocktail in hand. 

When it comes to exclusive whale watching everyone gets up close to the rail as we only take a maximum of 23 passengers.  We pride ourselves on making these trips a very personal and memerable experience.

19. Caloundra Jetski

Caloundra Jetski in the heart of Pumicestone Passage and Morton Bay Marine Parks, Caloundra Jetski offers exhilarating fast paced tours of waterways with a little education and nature on the side. It is amazing how much you can lean when you are having fun! It is an eco adventure where you get to do the driving.

The guide and instructor  will show you how to ride and then take you on the trip of your choice – anything from a gentle 50 minute ride, through to a half day Epic. There’s a 60 minute adrenalin infused Bribie Blast and a 90 minute Glasshouse Twister which takes you deep into the marine park – home to turtles, dolphins, dugongs and over 300 different types of migratory and wading birds.

Caloundra Jetski is a bit like having a friend who can teach you to ride, who knows Pumicestone Passage, knows where the sand bars are and if you’re curious, can tell you all about the marine park along the way.

Over 30 rides and attractions! Spin, soar, soak and laugh the day away with this classic theme park experience. This is one for family fun and adventure that the kids will love for a change of pace to your holiday.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland: One-Day Self-Drive Itinerary

See the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in one day with this nature-filled road trip taking you to national parks, refreshing swimming holes, quaint country towns, foodie delights, and magical mountains.

Best Time to Visit the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Eumundi markets, dulong lookout and the big pineapple, mapleton falls national park, kondalilla national park, montville markets and main street, brouhaha brewery, maleny, mary cairncross scenic reserve, gardner falls, sunshine coast hinterland accommodation.

One of the most marvellous characteristics of the Sunshine Coast is the contrast between its golden beaches and crisp hinterland. It’s these complimentary landscapes that make the Sunshine Coast such a desirable destination to stay and play in Queensland.

As a former Brisbanite, I’ve taken many day trips to small sections of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland over the years. Then, while recently based in Maroochydore and Buderim, I planned the ultimate one day on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

This Sunshine Coast Hinterland itinerary can be completed in a loop, starting from the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane. From Maroochydore driving west, it took us 30 minutes to get to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

For those visitors from Brisbane, keep in mind that it’s around one hour of driving to reach the southern point of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland region and around two hours to the northern point (not including the driving time between attractions). If that sounds like too much driving for one day, see our recommendations for Sunshine Coast Hinterland accommodation at the bottom of the article.

The Jinibara People are the Traditional Owners and determined Native Titleholders of the western section of the Sunshine Coast region, including parts of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

There’s no wrong season to visit the Sunshine Coast with hot summers averaging a high of 29C and mild winters averaging a low of 9C. Even in the middle of winter, you’ll find sunny and pleasant days as high as 22C. If you decide to visit in the warmer months, you’ll have the bonus of wet weather filling up the waterfalls and swimming holes in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

To avoid the crowds, book your trip outside of the Queensland school holidays .

One-Day Itinerary for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Finally, we started at the northern point of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, however, you could also choose to do this itinerary in reverse if you prefer to start south.

Start your Sunshine Coast Hinterland day trip with Australia’s biggest arts and crafts market. The Eumundi Markets are a splash of colour and activity within a small country town.

Local tip: After wandering around the Eumundi Market, wet your whistle at the Eumundi Brewery, across the road within the Imperial Hotel . People flock from all over to mingle at this market, snacking on fresh street food and shopping for handmade goods.

Location: 80 Memorial Dr, Eumundi QLD 4562 Best Time to Visit: Open Wednesdays 8 am – 2 pm and Saturdays 7 am – 2 pm How much: The market is free to enter. Parking is $7

From Eumundi heading south into the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, there are a few points of interest you may wish to visit. The first is The Ginger Factory in Yandina with tasting tours and rides for kids.

Next, is the iconic Big Pineapple in Nambour. Its park and its attractions are sadly closed, however, you can still pull over to look at the oversized pineapple.

Third, is Dulong Lookout, reached after a short uphill drive from Nambour. This spectacular photo spot overlooks the Sunshine Coast towards Maroochydore.

Location: Dulong Lookout, Burnside QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: Anytime from sunrise to sunset.

If you drive from Eumundi Markets stopping at Dulong Lookout, it’s approximately 35 minutes to Maple Falls National Park . The 58-kilometre Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk runs through Maple Falls National Park, providing shorter walking tracks for day visitors.

• Maple Falls Lookout: A 25-meter path connects the car park with a breathtaking view of the Obi Obi Valley. Both the lookout and picnic areas are wheelchairs accessible.
• Woompoo Circuit: Stretch your legs on this 1.3-kilometre return walk through the dense rainforest. For the best views of Maple Falls, check out the Peregrine Lookout.

Location: Maple Falls Viewing Point, Mapleton QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: Anytime from sunrise to sunset.

At the next set of waterfalls in Kondalilla National Park, you’ll have the opportunity to cool off. It’s a quick 15-minute drive from Mapleton Falls National Park. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk also connects the Mapleton Falls Lookout with the Kondalilla picnic area where you’ll be starting your visit.

Here there are four short walks, with the most popular being the 4.7-kilometre Kondalilla Falls Circuit. This trail requires a reasonable level of fitness with 300 steps. However, you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the rock pools.

Location: Kondalilla Falls Rd, Flaxton QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: Plan ahead to ensure you have enough time to return during daylight hours. The best time to see the falls is during the wetter months (December to June).

You’ll likely feel famished after your hike and swim at Kondalilla National Park. We recommend heading five minutes down the road to Montville for lunch. This picturesque small town has a charming main street dotted with cafes, art, and antique stores. After taking a stroll around town, we planted ourselves in the Russell Family Park for a picnic.

For local produce and eats, plan to arrive when the Montville Markets are on. The various stalls sell fresh fruit, locally grown vegetables, baked treats, and fair trade coffee.

Location: Village Hall on Memorial Close, off, Main St, Montville QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: The Montville Markets run from 7.30 am to 12 pm on the second Saturday morning of each month.

Maleny is another 16-minute drive from its sister town of Montville. There’s an abundance of activities in Maleny, depending on your taste and interests. We dropped in at the Brouhaha Brewery, which now has a second Sunshine Coast location in Baringa. This brewpub sources local, seasonal fruits and sends discarded grain to feed the cows at Maleny Wagyu farms. Brouhaha then buys back those cows to use nose-to-tail in the restaurant.

Other Maleny attractions include:

• Maleny Botanic Gardens : Privately owned garden and wildlife park open 7 days a week
• Maleny Cheese : Sample award-winning cheese and yogurt in their cafe next to a working cheese factory
• Maleny Dairies : Visit Queensland’s first carbon-neutral dairy business with tours and taste testing
• Platypus Viewing Platform: This platypus viewing spot is on Porters Lane in North Maleny. Early morning or late afternoon are usually the best times to spot a platypus.

Location: Brouhaha Maleny is at Shop 5 on 39 Coral St, Maleny QLD 4552 Best Time to Visit: Open Friday to Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm.

The namesake of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve was a devoted environmentalist whose land was used to create a 100-acre reserve. The project began in 1959 by the Rotary Club of Maleny in collaboration with Mary’s daughter and the Landsborough Shire Council.

Now the Marcy Cairncross Scenic Reserve is home to over 200 species of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals such as the pademelon. For a gold coin donation, you’ll be able to explore the reserve and its facilities such as the Rainforest Discovery Centre and Glass House Mountains viewing platform. Eating options are available with the Mountain View Cafe or picnic tables and BBQs in the public picnic area.

Location: 148 Mountain View Rd, Maleny QLD 4552 Best Time to Visit: Open daily from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm

Gardner Falls was the last stop on our one-day itinerary for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. These falls in Maleny, close to the other attractions and a popular swimming hole for locals.

We found going in the late afternoon to be a perfect time, as many people were leaving. The waterfalls aren’t are impressive as at Mapleton Falls and Kondalilla National Park, however, this is a fun place to take a dip and relax.

Location: Obi Ln S, Maleny QLD 4552 Best Time to Visit: Anytime from sunrise to sunset.

We planned our trip to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in a day, but you could easily spread out these activities over a weekend or longer. To help you plan your trip and book accommodation, we’ve listed some of the best places to stay in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland:

• Glass House Mountains Ecolodge (from $129 per night): Affordable and sustainable accommodation near the majestic Glass House Mountains National Park. There are options for all group sizes, whether travelling solo, with friends or family. You could even sleep in a 19th-century church or restored train carriage.
• The Guesthouse Maleny (from $144 per night): A quaint and comfortable guesthouse walking distance to Maleny’s main street and attractions such as the Maleny Botanic Gardens.
• Hunchy Hideaway (from $304 per night): Treat yourself to a gorgeous villa or cottage tucked away in Montville. Each accommodation option is self-contained with a spa bath and log fire.

We have a feeling you’ll be leaving the Sunshine Coast Hinterland completely rejuvenated, yet yearning for the next visit.

Meet the founder of Coast to Hinterland Tours

I am a consummate organiser with a passion for tourism and travel. I’ve not only studied tourism but I’ve also lived it, having visited over 80 countries. Leaving Zimbabwe with my family at age 9, we settled in South Africa before migrating to Australia. After a brief stay in Perth, we settled in Townsville, where I finished school before completing an Associate Diploma of Business in Travel and Tourism. I began working for a local travel agency, before taking over its management. 

Taking a break from the travel industry I ventured into selling print media advertising, developing further my customer service skills. My passion for adventure ignited with the prospect of a working holiday; the UK opened its arms and welcomed me to its shores. I was immersed in travel, visiting over 50 countries during my time away. New jobs allowed me to further develop my organisational and leadership skills, and learn new skills that have become integral to Coast to Hinterland Tours.

Not content to stay in one location or one industry, an impulse decision saw me land in Shetland on the working side of the bar, sharing stories with locals and visitors, before returning to London in a new leadership role. This was another stepping stone, a chapter in a longer story. With my finger pointed the globe turned once more, this time stopping at Slovenia.

Soon work led me back to tourism; I became a Sales & Customer Relations Manager for an online company selling travel packages throughout Europe. 4+ years later, I was back in London, planning my return to Australia.

Settling on the Sunshine Coast despite never having been here before was another challenge to be met. I had lived in 6 countries, one of them where I didn’t have the language, so how hard could it be? I found my feet before I had taken off my shoes, this was my new home; paradise.

Starting a business was the only thing to do. I had found paradise and wanted to share it with as many people as I could, and what better way to do that than to utilise all of my skills and experience to create a company that would allow me to do just that? So I created Coast to Hinterland Tours. My passion for adventure, my love of food, of nature, of where I live, this place was too good not to share.

My life has always been an adventure and I will continue to make adventure my life. The rest, well, it’s still happening.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland & Noosa Tour Itinerary

The Sunshine Coast ‘s Hinterland is filled with vibrant markets, stunning views, and incredible mountain ranges imbued with a heady mix of culture and history. On this one-day adventure, you’ll get to experience everything it has to offer and more as we take you around the Eumundi Markets , through the Blackall Ranges, and to the world’s largest operating ginger factory.

The tour begins in Brisbane , but we’ll quickly leave the city and head into the picturesque clutches of the Blackall Ranges. Here, you’ll have ample opportunity to marvel at the incredible views over the Hinterland and enjoy panoramic views across the Queensland coastline. On the way, we’ll weave through historic towns and past charming farmland to give you an insight into local life in this part of the country.

We’ll kick things off by visiting the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and Lookout, where you can soak up views of the Glass House Mountains and refuel with a mid-morning cup of tea. For the more adventurous travellers, there’s the chance to take a tree-top walk. Afterwards, we’ll move onto Gerrard’s Lookout which boasts breath-taking views across Coolum, Caloundra, and Bribie Island.

Next, it’s on to Montville, a charming town home to plenty of art galleries and boutique shops for you to explore before we go to Australia’s premier artisan destination, the Eumundi Markets. Here, you can browse stalls piled high with local art, food, homeware, and everything in between.

Afterwards, we’ll move on to one of Australia’s most popular beach spots, Noosa. You’ll have time to explore the exclusive town before we take you along the southern coast past the sprawling beaches of Sunshine, Marcus, Peregian, and Coolum on our way to Yandina.

When we’re in Yandina, we’ll head straight to the largest operating ginger factory in the world where you can try all sorts of delicious ginger flavoured goods before we make our way back to Brisbane.

Full Day Explore

Visiting Flame Hill Vineyard, with a private wine tasting. Enjoy beautiful views of the estate, then on to Montville to explore. We then take in the beautiful views of the Sunshine Coast and Glass House Mountains from the range tops as we head to the town of Maleny. 

Choose the Maleny Cheese Factory OR Maleny Chocolate Co.  Onto Brouhaha Brewery for a tasting paddle of craft beer or a glass of wine. Enjoy a delicious two-course lunch, before  The Barrel at Clouds Vineyard visit.
