Often the body removes the wax itself, but in others it may need to be extracted by a health professional.

About earwax removal

A build up of ear wax is a common issue which should always be treated by a qualified hearing expert, and not at home, to prevent damage to the ears. Microsuction is a modern technique in which ear wax can be removed gently with minimal discomfort.

The procedure has revolutionised the way that we can effectively remove a build up of ear wax, and is the preferred method amongst audiologists and ENT specialists. Microsuction delivers better results compared to older, outdated methods of ear wax removal such as syringing.

How microsuction is performed

Ear wax removal using microsuction is performed with the aid of an otoscope and a finely calibrated suction device, without the introduction of any materials or liquids.

The otoscope is used to look into the ear, whilst the suction device works to gently suck the wax from the ear canal.

There is no downtime after the procedure, and once the ear wax has been removed, your hearing quality will be back to normal.

How to keep your ears clean

Tips for cleaning your ears at home.

Although a severe build up of ear wax should only be addressed by a qualified audiologist or ENT specialist, there are some steps that can be taken at home to safely clean your ears of unwanted wax.

Applying olive oil based ear drops will soften and break down the ear wax over time. These should be applied using a spray bottle to spread the drops deep and evenly in the ear canal whilst lying down.

The softened ear wax will eventually make its way from the ear canal to the ear opening, where it will usually dry up and fall out. This is usually encouraged by the movement of chewing and moving your jaw.

This is the safest way to clean your ears at home, but should not be done if your ears are badly blocked and you can't hear anything. In this instance, you should book in for ear wax removal with a professional.

North London Earwax Clinic uses endoscopic microsuction to remove build-up ear wax in the safest and most comfortable way. 

Ear wax is naturally occurring and serves the important purposes of lubricating and protecting our ears against infection. However, excess ear wax build-up can lead to uncomfortable and sometimes painful conditions. 

Our audiologists use a specialised ear suction tube to gently dislodge and remove excess wax from the ear canal. An endoscope camera specifically designed for this procedure provides us with a high-quality, panoramic view of the ear canal and eardrum, ensuring that the procedure is carried out safely and that all ear wax is effectively removed.

More About the Earwax Microsuction Procedure

We use an oto-endoscope specifically designed to provide a clear view of the ear canal while earwax is removed through microsuction. The iCLEARscope® is equipped with a specialised camera, bright light, and designed to attach to an iPod, providing us with an unmatched high-quality, panoramic view of the ear canal and eardrum. To remove the earwax, we use a specialised micro suction device, a low-pressure suction probe tube attached to a suction machine. Other fine, high-precision instruments may also be used by our audiologists to help with the process.

Unlike other methods of earwax removal, which are often carried out blindly or with limited visibility, endoscopic earwax microsuction offers our audiologists full view and control of the procedure, making it a safe and comfortable option for a wide range of patients. Due to the high level of precision offered by the tools we use, the microsuction earwax removal process is generally pain-free and can be completed in under half an hour. 

Is Microsuction Different from Ear Syringing?

Yes. Ear syringing and the more modern process of ear irrigation involve using a pressurised flow of water to flush out earwax from the ear canal. Microsuction, on the other hand, is performed ‘dry’ meaning that water does not need to be flushed into the ear canal, as the wax is removed with the help of a high-precision ear suction instrument. 

Microsuction ear wax removal is a much more modern and safer technique, that offers several benefits when compared to ear syringing and irrigation methods:

Microsuction is safe even if you have a perforated eardrum or ear infection

Endoscopic microsuction removes wax in a controlled manner, with a full view of the ear canal and buildup throughout the process

Unlike syringing, microsuction does not add water to the ear and only removes excess ear wax, making it suitable for those prone to ear infections

What to Expect From Your Microsuction Ear Wax Removal Appointment

We’ll see you in the comfort of your own residence, all we need is a chair and a flat surface to set up our equipment in order to be able to perform the procedure.

Depending on the amount and consistency of the wax, removal can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. Our trained audiologist will use an oto-endoscope and specialised suction tube to gently remove build-up wax from your ear. We’ll be able to provide you with before and after pictures so you can see the result of the procedure.

Yes. Endoscopic microsuction is the safest and most precise method of ear wax removal. The procedure is carried out by a qualified audiologist, who uses an endoscope to gain a full view of the inside of the ear canal and remove the wax in an effective and highly precise manner. The process does not require contact with the ear canal and eardrum, making it less likely to create irritation and infection.

Ear Wax Microsuction is suitable for a wide range of patients, including those that suffer from ear infections, perforated eardrums, and narrow ear canals.

Using an endoscope means that we can target the wax precisely, without irritating or creating pain in the ear canal or eardrum. Should the procedure become uncomfortable, we can stop at any time. We will clean your ears with care and patience, taking the time needed to ensure your comfort.

Sometimes hard wax can be painful to remove, which is why we recommend that you soften the earwax with olive oil beforehand if there are no contraindications to doing so (including infections, and perforated eardrums).

Ear wax naturally drains, dries, and falls out of your ear canal. When buildup occurs, it can quickly lead to discomfort and complications, and therefore needs to be removed. Some of the most common signs of excessive earwax buildup include:

• A sensation of fullness in your ears
• Earache or plugged ears
• Ringing in your ear (tinnitus)
• Itching in the ear

Unremoved earwax build-up can also lead to infections, which present symptoms such as pain, fever, couching, drainage from the ear, odour, and dizziness.

We will always assess the ear before going ahead with treatment. If no wax can be found, you will only be charged a consultation fee.

Ear suction is just another, less common name for the process of microsuction.

As a safe and minimally-irritating process, microsuction can be carried out as often as necessary. Ear wax production varies from person to person, and so does the likelihood of earwax buildup. You can have your ears cleaned through microsuction whenever the symptoms of a blockage appear. Those who develop a lot of earwax and are more prone to blockages may find it necessary to have their ears suctioned as often as every 3 to 6 months.

Does it hurt?

Microsuction ear wax removal is typically painless but can sometimes cause minor discomfort. It’s safe and quick, but some may experience slight sensitivity.

How long does it take?

Microsuction ear wax removal generally takes between 15 to 30 minutes per ear. The exact duration varies depending on the amount and hardness of the wax. Some complex cases may take longer.

Is it messy?

Microsuction ear wax removal is not messy. The procedure uses a vacuum to gently suck out the wax. Unlike syringing or irrigation methods, it does not require water, thus keeping the process clean and tidy.

Are there any side effects?

There can sometimes be side effects but these tend to be minor.

In the event of no-wax being found a £50 consultation fee will still apply.

If you would prefer to be visited at home, earwax removal is available on a Home Visit Basis in the following Postcode areas: N, NW, HA, EN and WD.

The charge is £180 . Outside of these areas, please ask us for a quotation.

In the event of no ear wax being found a £100 consultation fee will still apply.

We follow three simple steps to give your ears the all clear.

Our high precision micro-suction technique is safe, quick and effective. Three straightforward steps – in a treatment process which takes just 15 short minutes – and we’ll have your hearing back to its usual state:

          – You’ll need to complete a short form to confirm that there are no symptoms precluding us from carrying out the procedure

          – We’ll conduct a thorough inspection of your ears

          – Using microsuction equipment, we’ll gently remove the ear wax from your ear canal

As the ear canal remains visible throughout – which is not possible with the messy, uncomfortable and often unsuccessful syringing treatment – one short visit is all it usually takes to remove all the problematic ear wax.

Following a visual examination of the outside of the ear, the ear canal and the eardrum, we perform the hearing sensitivity test - Pure Tone Audiometry. Hearing ability also depends on brain function so, besides the pure tone test of hearing sensitivity, we perform functional hearing tests such as speech tests in noise and speech sensitivity alongside cognitive function tests. This will help us decide how to manage the impact of each aspect of your hearing.

This can be dangerous. Ear wax removal is best left to professionals. Cotton buds, candles, Chinese medicine, 'remedies', implements & machines purchased online can all be harmful and lead to pain, infection, vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus. 

Ear Syringing and Ear Irrigation - now outdated

These are older techniques now. Ear Syringing and Ear Irrigation methods use high-pressured jets of water to wash out wax. Consequently, having excessive ear wax removed via ear syringing or ear irrigation carries slightly more risk and is less comfortable. With some patients, ear syringing can assist in the the ear wax removal process, in combination with microsuction, but it's use is becoming rare now. Indeed, the NHS has also scrapped the use of ear syringing in GP surgeries as part of a general dismantling of ear wax removal services nationwide. Consequently, ear wax removal is now increasingly provided by the private market.

Microsuction - Safest Method - The Gold Standard

We use microsuction, which is safer and has now become healthcare professionals preferred method. Unlike water syringing and irrigation, microsuction is comfortable, painless and quick. The procedure is conducted under loupe magnification, ensuring the procedure is exceptionally safe. A low powered, medical suction probe is placed a short way into the ear canal to remove wax. How long does Microsuction take?

Often, wax can be removed within minutes. Typically it takes 15-30 minutes.

How Does Microsuction Work?

A light, blunt probe is inserted a short way into the ear canal. The probe gently suctions wax out. The procedure is carried out in full view, using loupe magnification to see exactly where to suction excessive wax. Microsuction is safe, comfortable and quick.

Do I need to take drops to soften the wax?

This is usually not necessary with Microsuction. However, we recommend applying olive oil drops or spray (twice a day) from the day you book the appointment, until the day of the appointment. (Always read the label) This may serve to assist in the quick removal of wax.

What are the symptoms of excessive ear wax?

Symptoms can be quite wide-ranging but include the following: hearing loss, tinnitus ('ringing in the ears'), itchiness, blocked feeling, earache, irritability and disorientation.

I am not sure if I have a wax problem. What if it is something else?

We will look into your ear canals and assess if you have excessive ear wax. If there is not any excessive wax then the reason for your symptoms may be something else. We can then refer you to our in-house Audiological Physician without the need for a referral from your GP (We are clinically fully integrated with the in-house Audiological Medicine department but this is run under a separate company entity.) Or, you can return to your GP and seek medical advice from them. For the assessment, without the ear wax removal treatment we charge £25.

What if some wax is too hard to remove first time? Do I need to pay for a follow up appointment?

We nearly always remove excessive wax first time. Occasionally, wax needs softening using olive oil spray / drops for a return visit to remove more wax. There is no charge for repeat visits. The £85 charge covers multiple appointments should you need it.

Can you use the older method of syringe or irrigation?

Occasionally, there my be a need to use ear syringe or irrigation in combination with microsuction. We are able to use these methods but we will always use microsuction as the preferred method and will rarely need to use any other technique.
