Mean Mary “I’d Rather Be Merry”

Woodrock records, 2023.

If you want festive tunes to go with the presents and mulled wine this is the album to play. Non-cliché Christmas music.

Four originals are included ‘ Cardboard Box’ is a post-break-up song with some wry humour around getting an unexpected gift from an ex. You’ll need to listen to it for the very funny pay off though. In fairness ’Jingle Bells’ is almost impossible to do something new with, but the James’ have succeeded, again by using all the words rather than the couple of verses usually sung. Bluegrass or Country is clearly the medium for cheery festive tunes as again this is more than listenable.

An original instrumental ‘ Snowy ’ is next and shows off Mary James’ considerable Banjo chops. She manages to bring a feel of snowfall to it and winds the tune up with a descending run that Greg Lake would have been proud of. Of the other traditional tunes ‘Deck the Halls’ ‘The Holly and The Ivy’ and ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ are arranged as English folk tunes, with the interaction between David Henry’s Cello and Frank James’ 12-string guitar the standout instrumental sections on the lats of these.

And that points the way to the reason behind making this album. Her goal was to “make a fun, laid-back holiday album” that featured the style of music she and Frank played as children. She says “To be frank, I’d rather be merry is the catchphrase from the title track of the album, a play on their names, and the main theme of the album. Frank has always been the glass-half-empty person and I’ve always been the optimistic, happy one. I think everyone can relate to both personality types during the holidays. But I think most of us will agree, it’s better to be merry!” The words are offered with tongue firmly in cheek, with some gentle teasing of her brother in the verses.

Mary “We could build a snowman? Frank “Is that really necessary? Mary “Let’s make ornaments for the tree.” Frank “Or we could use the old decorations.” Mary “Christmas is a time we all should be happy.” Frank “You have very, very high expectations”.

“ O Holy Night ” is played straight with Mary’s vocals and piano, as is ‘ It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.’ The album closes with the last original ‘ Ding Dong Day’. This is the one they are clearly hoping for airplay from as it as a more commercial country flavour to the tune and the sort of radio-friendly arrangement that would make it stand out from the usual Christmas mush.

Has Mean Mary succeeded in making a holiday album you would actually want to play? Yes, she has. The originals add some humour to proceedings and the traditional tunes are presented with enough of a slant to make then sound fresh.

“The songs are actually painfully relevant. We sing about landlords, about property, about the cost of living in general— and they resonate with younger people… [But equally] some of the songs are about 400 years old,” he explained.

“We touch on a wide range of emotions too… some are funny and some of them are more serious…It’s nice to have people crowd-surfing to Irish music.”

Direct from the West End, Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Group are delighted to announce the spectacular full production of the classic multi-award-winning musical MARY POPPINS will embark on a 2024/2025 UK and Ireland tour.

20 years after the world premiere in Bristol and subsequent, record-breaking productions around the world, Mary Poppins flies back into Bristol Hippodrome on 4 November 2024 where it will run until 30 November 2024 ahead of playing Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin (11 December 2024 – 11 January 2025), Festival Theatre, Edinburgh (22 January 2025 – 15 February 2025), Theatre Royal Plymouth (26 February 2025 – 29 March 2025) and Palace Theatre Manchester (9 April 2025 – 17 May 2025). Further venues to be announced.

Acclaimed Australian stars, Stefanie Jones and Jack Chambers reprise their roles as Mary Poppins and Bert, having both received critical acclaim and nightly standing ovations for their performances in the recent Australian production. The Age hailed Stefanie “a terrific Mary Poppins, who gives an impeccable performance”, and called Jack Chambers “a glorious Bert, with happy feet and a thousand-watt smile.” Further casting to be announced soon.

Based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, the story of the World’s favourite nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane is more magical than ever before featuring dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs.

Producer and Co-creator Cameron Mackintosh said today, “ It is amazingly already 20 years since Mary Poppins first landed onto the stage at the Bristol Hippodrome and started spreading Pamela Travers’ magical stories around the great cities of the world. Mary has soared triumphantly around the globe and our recent Australian production discovered two of the most delightful Mary and Berts ever – Stefanie Jones and Jack Chambers – whom I’m thrilled to be bringing to the United Kingdom and Ireland to star in this spectacular new National tour. They are heading a wonderful cast and I’m sure you will find this the most magical production of Mary Poppins ever, practically perfect in every way! ”

New Mary Poppins UK tour announced

Mary Poppins tour poster

Mary Poppins is to head on a brand new UK tour later in 2024.

Originally opening on the West End in 2004, the Mary Poppins Musical is inspired by both the original 1960s Disney film and the books on which it’s based.

Following the show’s recent revival, which concluded its run in the West End last year, the musical will be heading to venues across the UK.

Stefanie Jones and Jack Chambers will star as Mary Poppins and Bert, with full casting to be announced.

The tour will open at the Bristol Hippodrome on 4 November 2024. Tickets go on sale from 18 March.

Mary Poppins tells the story of the Banks family who live in a big house in London on Cherry Lane. In deed of a new nanny for children, Jane and Michael, they find a mysterious young woman is the answer to their prayers, but in the most peculiar way.

The stage adaption features music and lyrics from Richard M. Sherman, Robert B. Sherman, George Stiles and Anthony Drewe with a book by Julian Fellowes.

A new West End cast recording of the show was released in 2020.

For Liv Lovelace, skating is more than a sport - 'It's life'

Paris 2024

After missing out on qualifying for Tokyo 2020 due to injury, the 20-year-old Australian is well-positioned to secure a spot for Paris 2024. And it would mean the world to someone who lives and breathes skateboarding.

Liv Lovelace of Australia

For some, skateboarding is about having fun, a hobby. For others, it’s a lot more serious - a competition or a job, a career or a way to make ends meet.

For Liv Lovelace , it’s life in itself.

“It's life,” Lovelace told Olympics.com ahead of WST Dubai Street 2024 this week, when asked what skating meant her. “Like, I don't know what my life would be like without it.

“All my friends are around skating and I just like being able to go skating by myself and put headphones in or listen to the world go by and be in my own world.

“It's my happy place.”

  • How to qualify for skateboarding at Paris 2024

Liv Lovelace: 'I just want to do people proud'

Lovelace took up skateboarding when she was eight or nine years old, hanging around with the boys on the streets of her hometown Sydney. She recalls being “instantly hooked”by the borderlessness of the sport.

Lovelace used to play football as well, but it didn’t take long for skateboarding to supplant it as the focal point of her life, serving as a lens for the introspection she needed during her formative years.

“Just the freedom,” she said. “Being able to be a little kid and kind of run away in my own little world and get lost, and I feel like it gave me an outlet to become the person that I am.

“I feel like if I didn't have skateboarding, it would have been a lot harder for me to become who I am and find my own sexuality and like, find my style and find the people that I want to be around.

“I used to play soccer. I was in a little rep soccer team and I would like, do soccer and then go straight from soccer to skating on like one of the days of the week. And every time I'd be like, ‘Oh, I don't want to go to soccer, I just want to go skating.’

“When I started to have that feeling, I was like, I just want to do this.”

Of all the kids Lovelace began skating with, she is the only one still at it - and then some.

The 20-year-old is ranked 18th in the world, third from Australia behind Chloe Covell and Haylie Powell . If Lovelace maintains her position through the Olympic Qualifier Series in June, she will have secured one of three quota allotted to her country in women’s street for Paris 2024 .

The qualifying campaign to Tokyo 2020 was far less smooth sailing for Lovelace, who broke her left humerus in two locations in the build-up to the Games while skating on the iconic Melbourne spot Gold Rails. The injury required three surgeries and 10 months for full recovery, seven of which kept her off a deck.

But Lovelace says she wouldn’t trade the painful experience for anything.

“I feel like that taught me a lot about myself. It gave me a lot of resilience and I wouldn't change it because I feel like now I'm in a much better place and I enjoy the contest skating way more this time around, trying to qualify for Paris than when I was kind of doing it trying to get to Tokyo.

“I, like, crave the feeling of eating concrete. It's really weird to say that. I don’t know, it keeps me humble, it brings me peace and brings me happiness. Like eating s--- actually is a good feeling.”

One of the things Lovelace likes most about skateboarding is that it takes her to different corners of the world where she gains invaluable life experience (see above Instagram post from Tokyo in December). She says she does not want to go to a country and be buried in a stadium for a week and fly home.

Paris would be no different. Although the life experience there would be felt not only by her but also by the people who helped Lovelace reach her first Olympic Games.

“It would mean a lot. I think it would be an achievement that is going to stay with me for the rest of my life. I think would be really cool,” she said.

“I want to do my country proud. But most importantly, it would be sick for my family and even for my grandparents as they're getting on in life. I really want them to hopefully come to Paris as that may be their last big international trip out of Australia.

“But I just want to do people proud. I want to have fun and do people proud and it would mean the world to me.”
