Dudhsagar falls trek, Goa: Train Timings from Castlerock & Kulem

Dudhsagar Falls is situated on the Mandovi river in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary And Mollem National Park. The name Dudhsagar translates to the ‘Sea of Milk’ in English. This waterfall is situated at the altitude of almost 600 meters and falls majestically from there.

Dudhsagar waterfalls are situated at the border of Karnataka and Goa. After the exposure of this waterfalls in the movie Chennai Express, it gained huge popularity in the same year and became very famous among the people of south India. For the recent updates, I will also encourage you to go through the comments at the end of the blog section.

How To Reach Dudhsagar Falls?

As mentioned before, this waterfall got famous among the people of South India, many people still wonder how to reach Dudhsagar falls. There are three ways by which you can reach the Dudhsagar waterfalls:

Reaching Dudhsagar Falls by Train:

If you do not want to experience Dudhsagar and you are short of time, then you can also enjoy seeing the waterfall from the train. The train passes through a lot of tunnels and also it crosses from the Dudhsagar falls. There is also a sharp U-turn near the Dudhsagar falls so you also get to see the full view of the Dudhsagar falls.

You can also reach Dudhsagar by a Jeep from Kulem railway station. However, this facility is not open throughout the year. Just outside the Kulem railway station, a taxi stand is there also known as “ Dudhsagar Jeep taxi stand “. You can go there book a Jeep to the Dudhsagar falls. Also, please note that the Jeep services to Dudhsagar falls are closed during the monsoon because of the flooded river and very muddy jeep trail.

Kulem is around 20 Km from Goa and it also lies in the state of Goa. To reach Kulem, you can book a taxi from Goa and that should not cost you more than Rupees 500 else go for bargaining. You can also reach Kulem by train from Madgao railway. It’s a 45-minute train ride.

Note that no other Jeeps are allowed other than the Jeeps from the taxi stand. So if you are planning to reach Dudhsagar falls in your own four by four, you might have to park your vehicle in the stand and then take a jeep from there.

Jeep can be hired for an entire group or on the individual basis, they charge Rupees 450 per person . A jeep can accommodate around 6-8 persons . You will also have to pay extra costs for the still camera as well as the video camera. For a still camera, the charge is Rupees 50 and Rupees 150 for the video camera .

But do take these cameras because of the Jeep ride worths it. The Jeep ride to Dudhsagar falls is not lesser than a wildlife safari. The jeep ride is a little rough and takes around 40 minutes to reach the waterfalls. The Jeep trail passes through the river stream and deep forest.

If you want you can also take the life jacket if you do not know swimming. A lifejacket costs around Rupees 30 and is available at the jeep stand. There is also a small market there where you can buy extra clothes if you are planning to take a dip in the falls. Since the waterfall is, at some places, around 8 feet deep, it is advisable to take the lifejacket if you do not know swimming. It is also advisable to start early morning around 8-9 so that you can avoid the afternoon sun .

The jeep stops at the Dudhsagar falls for around one hour and then you return by the same Jeep. Forget not to take the number of the Jeep driver, in the case of an emergency.

The best and the most enjoyable way to reach Dudhsagar falls is on foot. This journey is strenuous but still, it is enjoyable. I have dedicated an entire section about reaching Dudhsagar on foot under the Dudhsagar trekking Guide section below.

If you are planning to do Dudhsagar trek (Reaching Dudhsagar on foot), the above route map might be of help to you. In the above map, the black lines are railway tracks on which you walk along to reach the waterfalls. There is also a railway station named ‘Dudhsagar railway station’ but no train stops at this station because this station is purposefully made for the technical breaks and all.

There are two stations from where the trek along the railway track can be attempted:

• Castlerock railway station in Karnataka
• Kulem railway station in Goa

Below is some basic information about the Dudhsagar trek:

• Dudhsagar Trek difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
• Best time for Dudhsagar trek: July to Dec (during Monsoon)
• The distance between Dudhsagar railway station & waterfall : 1 Km

Dudhsagar Trekking Routes:

Castlerock railway station to dudhsagar falls trekking (14 km & 5-6 hours of trekking).

If you are coming from Bangalore side, Castlerock should be your preferred Dudhsagar trek starting point. Castlerock railway station lies in Karnataka. So if you are coming from railway stations like Hubli, Dharwad, Londa, Dandeli etc. then Castlerock railway station should be your ideal railway station to start the trek.  

Castlerock to Dudhsagar trek is the most popular trekking route. However, on weekends, this route is usually crowded. If you are starting from Bangalore, you can catch Madras- Vasco Express on Friday night at 21:35 PM at Yashwantpur railway station and reach Castlerock railway station on Saturday around 09:20 AM. 

I have also mentioned the trains and railway timings from different railway stations to Castlerock railway station in the later section of this article. Besides being a longer trekking route to Kulem-Dudhsagar route, this trekking route also has more tunnels on the way and also has the famous second largest tunnel en route.

There are other two advantages of starting Dudhsagar trek from Castlerock station:

• If you are coming in a hired vehicle like Tempo-traveler or some taxi, you do not enter Goa if you park your vehicle at the Castlerock railway station. This way, you save inter-state road tax also.
• There is also a hotel/ staying place near the Castlerock railway station named Castlerock adventure camp .  They are Karnataka government certified hotel. You can either book the whole package from them (Stay + Trek) or if you are just staying there, you can par your car there and attempt the trek.
• In case you are not staying there at all, you can ask their permission for the car parking. I hope that works. Or park near the railway station.

Kulem railway station to Dudhsagar falls trekking (11 Km & 4-5 Hours of trekking)

In terms of greenery and beauty, Kulem trekking route is not less than the Castlerock trekking route. Kulem is around 20 Km from Goa and can be reached easily by taxi or train from Margao railway station. However, trains are not so frequent from Madgao to Kulem. So please check the railway timings from Madgao to Kulem below.

One of the most important things on this route is, it has the famous Dudhsagar viewpoint (refer the map above). Dudhsagar viewpoint is one Km away from the waterfalls from where a train takes a complete U-turn. One can see the Dudhsagar’s majestic waterfalls view from here which lies on the Kulem route.

Is it safe to walk on the Railway Tracks?

Of course, we know that it is not so safe to walk on the railway tracks. However, this route being not so busy, the frequency of the trains is very less so it makes comfortable to walk. However, in some places, there is nothing to stand when a train comes so be careful.

Also, the rail tracks become very slippery during the monsoon after the rainfall. Have proper shoes which have a nice grip and do not slip on a wet track. My this experience also comes from Sakleshpur railway trek .

Where to camp at Dudhsagar Falls Trek?

The Dudhsagar camping site is nearer to the Dudhsagar waterfalls. Just nearer to the Dudhsagar waterfalls, Dudhsagar railway station is there. You can pitch your tent there.

However, Dudhsagar station is usually crowded on the weekends so it is advisable to start your trek early. There are not any camping charge. Don’t forget to carry tents because it might rain at night if you are planning to camp there.

Other Facilities like Food, Bathroom, Staying facility at Dudhsagar Railway Station/ Falls?

There are no Food facilities available at the Dudhsagar railway station. So, you will have to carry your own food. Finding dry woods during monsoon is tough too. So, if you planning to cook your own food at night, be prepared for that. However, During the day, local vendors sell snacks and drinks at waterfalls but at the costlier prices. 

Also, there is no bathroom facility at the Dudhsagar railway station. You have to use nature for that. If you are going in a group with girls, make sure they know where they are going to. 

Mollem National Park Jeep Safari

I must say your visit to Dudhsagar falls is not complete if you have not planned the mollem park jeep safari. The jeep safari is of about 40 to 45 minutes and it also covers the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. There are also options to pre book your jeep safari online . For everyone along with the nature delights, you may also enjoy some rare animals like barking deer, bonnet macaque as well as some rare plants and birds. The cost of jeep safari per person starts from anywhere near RS.1700 which also includes the entrance fees of the waterfall.

Tips for visiting Dudhsagar Falls

If this is your very first visit to Dudhsagar falls than you need to keep some important points in your mind:

• Not all trains halt at the Dudhsagar railway station so if you are travelling by train then please check that the train you are travelling does have a stop at this station.
• Please avoid walking on the railway tracks as it is not allowed. 
• Planning a jeep safari then please start at the starting point in the morning itself.
• For a jeep safari, you will need at least 7 people in your group so plan accordingly else you will have to wait for the jeep to be filled.
• Please make sure that your start your visit to Dudhsagar falls early as the visit will be closed at sharp 6:00 PM.

How to return from Dudhsagar waterfall to Kulem/Castlerock?

In the worst case, you will have to walk back to Kulem or Castle rock railway station. However, this railway route has a good frequency of goods train. Sometimes, the goods train stops for a while at the Dudhsagar railway station to check their breaks because Dudhsagar railway station onwards, the trail descends along the rails so checking break becomes necessary for them.

In those cases, you can stand at a point where either engine will stop or the guard’s boogie will. Then you can talk with the guards of goods trains to help you out till Kulem or Castlerock depending upon the direction the train is going to.

Sometimes, also, one or two passenger train comes and slows down a bit (does not necessarily stops). In those cases, you have to really quick to get on the train because there will be a lot and lot of people fighting to enter the train. Be careful with the kids and women.

How I get the return tickets at Dudhsagar?

Buy the returning ticket as well at the Kulem or Castlerock railway station because there is no ticket vending counter at the Dudhsagar railway station.

NOTE: If you get into sleeper coaches with general tickets, be prepared to pay heavy fines unless you are lucky enough to escape from the eyes of TTE (Train Ticket Examiner)

What to carry on Dudhsagar falls trek?

• A good walking shoe with good grip because railway tracks get sleepy
• A light backpack
• Sleeping bag (If you are planning to stay overnight and if they are not waterproof wrap them in some plastic to keep them dry)
• Tent (For the same above reason)
• Torch (A must)
• Raincoat (You would love walking under rain)
• An extra pair of clothing
• Toiletries (There are no toilets there)
• Fully charged camera and mobile phone
• Personal medication
• Sufficient eatables (Dudhsagar has no food stalls)
• Sufficient cash

Is Dudhsagar trek Illegal?

Well, it is a difficult question to answer. But, no, Dudhsagar is not an illegal trek . However, due to overcrowding and drowning of a few students in the Dudhsagar falls last year, the police banned the trek for a month or during the monsoon when the water level was very high in the falls. But now the trekking has resumed on this track and people have also started to go for this trek as well.

Dudhsagar trek from Mumbai:

Start from Mumbai by a Train to Margao railway station (Goa) so that you can reach Next morning. Here is a list of the trains (Preferable trains are marked inside an orange box)

Reaching Dudhsagar falls from Margao:

From Margao (Goa), Kulem is the nearest railway station to Dudhsagar falls from North-Eastern side. You can also take a train to Kulem. Since the distance to Kulem is around 40 Kms from Margao, you might not get a booked berth for that and you will have to travel in General class.

Once you reach Kulem in next hours, take an offroad jeep to Dudhsagar falls from there. Visit the falls and return Kulem again.

Best time to visit Dudhsagar falls will be from Septemeber to April when the monsoon is over.

I sucessfully attempted this trek on 29th Nov from Castle rock. If luck favors you can start the trek from CLR if there is no RPF present at the station. Alternatively you can reach DDS via Good train by asking the guard. Both options are purely based on luck and timings. There are no RPF/Police en route to DDS. So if you are lucky enough to escape from on duty RPF in castle rock then most probably you can complete your trek to DDS.

Hey, I read your post and all the comments. And I am a little confused with the current condition of the treck? So just to clarify, 1] the treck from castle rock is also now closed?(by mud way?) (By track way?) 2] is there no way to reach dudhsagar waterfall now? If yes, how? 3] tenting stay is also not allowed on dudhsagar railway station?

Willing to travel there on 8-9th of July. Your advice would be very helpful.

The Trek from castle Rock is closed una all the format. However, through some comments I have come to know that there are some organisations which conduct Trek not totally along the railway tracks but through forests.

To reach the falls you can explore options from kulem. Either by mud way or by jeep. Both of the route are same.

Camping or staying is not allowed near the falls or in the reserve forest.

Trekking is not allowed but you can get a jeep from the Kulem Jeep stand.

Hai guys, Refer to my earlier post on 13, 19 Sep 16 and 21 Oct 16 . I got a VERY good response in my whats app asking about DDS falls trek. I did my best with the available info.

As I said in my last post, I went on trek to DDS falls bottom on 24 Dec 16 (went on mud track and returned on rail track) Latest update is the present water level in falls is moderate. (Declines as months pass by)

DDS falls bottom is officially open for public and I found a lot of rush including those who were going through jeep as well trek. (u can buy tickets in kulem, DDS falls counter)

For trek:- U have two options to trek (KULEM TO DDS FALLS) One is mud route (the jeeps way / kachha rasta). U would find many fellow trekkers in weekends and lots of jeeps moving to and fro. Two is via train track upto sonaulim station and get join back to mud rote (u would save around 2 km but feel uncomfortable walking on tracks, even good brand shoes/ boots might give up sometimes as my woodland gave up).

Choose ur option wisely. Through train track very less people going for trek but via mud route u would find number of fellow trekkers on the way. Safety tip for rail trek :- While u guys trek through rail track u will find one tunnel (aprox 250 mtrs) before the sonalium station so carry a good torch and avoid using ear phones r head phones when opt for rail trek. Carry one visile for communication/ alerting others).

Remember one thing ‘’DDS BRIDGE’’ is not yet open for public. So avoid moving on train track after sonalium station otherwise u have to get back the same way to sonalium and u will find its just a waste of efforts.(but u can have full view of waterfalls after 1 km on track from sonalium to DDS bridge). Those who wish to go by train can alight at sonalium station (both ways via kulem r castle rock) from there its hardly 3km to DDS falls. Don’t think about alighting at DDS railway station (refer my 21 Oct post). Good news for night campers (Sonalium):- No night stay possible in the vicinity of waterfall, because no suitable ground, surrounding and seems not safe too. For night camping one need to come back to sonalium from falls (aprox 3 km ) and u will find a temple and couple lives by and presently Power supply is also restored so u can have fun with friends. If ur luck is good u would find other night campers. In my case, whenever I do night stay no other team was there for night stay. U should carry own tents for better experience. No tents available for rent. If u don’t have tents atleast u should carry a sleeping bag and mosquito net. Presently, its cold in mid nights so carry ur warm clothing. For the best possible way u drop ur extra lugguage on the way to falls at the couples home (couple is so genuine and helpful) and get back to the temple and pitch ur tent. For food and drinks the couple will provide at the reasonable prices (but order well in time because it’s not hotel it’s a normal house). In the morning u can fresh up in a water stream flowing nearby and pack ur luggage and return to ur destination . The temple is just below the sonalium station so u can get train easily with planning. Even ladies too can enjoy night stay no problem. As of now no wild animals spotted nearby and no incident took place. The couples lives by are very helpful so u can take their help. Lot many trekkers had successful trek and night camping after watching my post and took guidance in whats app. So enjoy guys and have a nice trek. I think I hav covered almost all aspects, even if any doubt u can what’s app me for the things which I didn’t cover in my posts. So pls I request everyone, pls go through all my previous posts before whats app me, u would almost find all answers in my post so ask genuine questions only. I keep replying the repeated question which sometimes makes me uneasy (Pls don’t ask about trek from castle rock, actually I don’t know becoz I live in goa). My quarries are 1) In that time trekking path will be opened or not? 2) is it possible to trek from Kulem to Dudhsagar Falls after 1:30pm? 3) If I want to stay near Dudhsagar falls overnight where to stay? 4) If I want to stay in tent overnight there , should I carry tent with myself or rented tent is available there? Hai guys, To my earlier post on 13 and 19 sep 16 i got a VERY good response in my whats app asking about DDS falls trek. I did my best with the available info.

LATEST UPDATE:-

As per one of the fellow trekker (to whom i guided) informed me 2 Weeks before that. They started trek from kulem to DDS falls bottom through Rail track, but they were stopped almost near to tunnel before sonalium by forest/ Railway staff and they told him that railway made a vigil post near to that. when they were tried to sneak through jungle track (mud track/ jeep track) one of the staff informed that going is no use because near to sonalium route on mud track too had made a railway staff post to stop all access to DDS falls bottom, so they made their along the way back to kulem with lot of unhappiness. so present staus about jeep is not yet known (hopefully they might managing them and making trip with extra charge).

To confirm that Last saturday (15 OCT) while i came across from castle rock to Kulem by amaravati express. i did’nt find a single trekker on track through out the belt from castle rock to Kulem. i met a group waiting near DDS station as they were waiting for train to get back to kulem. actually they were alighted at DDs station in the morning to reach falls but unfortunately they were too stopped by railway police near to station and didnt allowed them to proceed to DDS bridge so they returned without reaching falls.

if any trekkers made to reach falls bottom and having fun, they can be seen from bridge, but i find no one in DDs falls bottom too (which can be viewed from moving train ). so it might be correct that some officals stopping near to sonalium in mud track. i find railway police (single person at once) in patrol near to tracks at castle rock station , caranzol, DDS station and Bridge. But i didnt find any police patrol near to sonalium station. and i had noticed that people were alighting and boarding in train (not happened to talk to who were boarding at sonalium) and no railway vigil post has seen from sonalium to kulem (as i said in para 1).

so fellow trekkers its upto u that what u decide. if u dont want to loose your will please go for trek and try to make it up. its 50-50 chances. if u made the trek successfully then please share your time and experience in trekker pedia.

In Dec 3rd week i might go trek and camp. Till then this is my last update. Regards, Giridhar

Still prohibited to roam on the bridge as few Policemen stopped us, but you get amazing view of entire falls from the view point ahead of bridge towards kulem. As of now reaching to the bottom of dudhsagar is close to impossible, because of rise in water level of streams. Waiting for water level to reduce, so as to visit this wonder again

Hai, Dudhsagar (The falls bottom) i went to Dudhsagar on 10 Sep 16 by walk from kulem and stayed overnight in own tents and returned on 11 Sep 16 to kulem. Recommendations:- I was more excited to do Dudhsagar trek but no one has given me the right path except trekkerpedia (Comments and replies on daily basis for about 2 months). Really it has helped me a lot and i thought its my turn to contribute genuine info to our fellow trekkers. Presently Dudhsagar trek is not open through track. However u can go upto sonalium by walk or any train which is passing by. I found that every train passing through sonaulim is halting about 1 r 2 minutes which is enough to alight. and locals in kulem are not so friendly and misguide u to avoid by walk and scare u that vigilance and railway officials will hold u and send back, so that u could use thier transport to reach dudhsagar trek. No jeeps are going directly from kulem to dudhsagar. But Jeep operators offer u to pick and drop three kilometers (by walk on track and jungle) away from kulem and they charge for Rs. 500 for that ride. (however u need to walk for almost 6 km). Bikes are offering directly from kulem to Dudhsagar but very expensive charge around Rs. 1200 (pick and drop).

Hai. Its Giridhar. To my last post on 13 sep 2016. I got a lot of msgs on my what’s app regarding trek. I almost shared my experience with photos too.

Latest update. On 18 Sep 16. I had travelled by Amaravati Express from vasco. This train stopped almost all the stations in between kulem to Dudhsagar ( sonalium, Near to DDS bridge and DDS Station) and found some families got down near DDS bridge but RPF didn’t allow them to reach Bridge. So I advise people don’t go DDS bridge unless its open officially. Best way to trek till the trek is officially open is go by mud walk from sonalium to DDS fall bottom. One of fellow trekker told me that due to heavy down pour in last 2 days. Today 19 sep 16 the streams between the sonalium and DDS fall is heavy and unable to cross. So they are unable to cross and returned back without completed the trek.

So i feel trekkers should wait for a while till the water level in streams to get normal.

Many people asked me that any hotels near by sonalium .

Sadly there is no hotel near by. But there is a temple just below the sonalium station. And a couple lives near to temple. U can sleep in that temple in nights and the couple provides u good food too with reasonable price. At least u carry sleeping bags else tents are recommended. No power supply is restored yet so carry power banks for ur cameras and mobiles. Sonalium is easily accessible by train from kulem as well castle rock and by walk from kulem ( on track r through jungle)

me and my friend are planning to visit dudhsagar water falls on 30th aug from goa (panjim) if we want to reach early morning none other than pvt two wheelers is the option as u said the rail route is completely banned ques 1. from kulem thers direct taxis till the base of dudhsagar waterfall / near of dudhsagar waterfalls 2.can two wheeler reach ds falls 3.whichever is cheapest and is ther any best possible way or plan other than above pls suggest the same

1. taxis are available in the form of Jeep service from Kulem keep stand….

2. Two-wheelers cannot reach the base as the trail is very muddy

3. there is only one option and that’s jeep ride to the base of the fall

Hi, I have few queries…. please make me clear.. I along with my 7 friends are in a plan to trek to dudhsagar waterfalls on aug 27. 1. Will we be allowed to trek to the falls on aug 27th, from kulem? 2. Is the road to falls from kulem is opened now? 3. Are the jeep rides available today? and will it be available till next week? 4. If the jeep rides are not available, and if the trek is also banned, then suggest me the possible options of reaching the falls from kulem?

trekking to Dudhsagar waterfalls is completely banned now. You are not allowed to trek from either Kulem or Castlerock. Yeah, the mud road to the bottom of the Dudhsagar falls is open from Kulem. Jeep services are always available. If both the options are closed then there is no other way, you can reach waterfalls except taking a train ride.

Hey all, just returned from Dudhsagar trek. (dated 19-08-16) Few things I wish to share. 1.Yes-the trek is completely banned. Railway staffs are very vigilant and not let you to sneak through. I have not spotted a single fellow trekker on the Kulem-DDS stretch. 2.The mud path is accessible. Though u have to brave few streams (particularly one having very strong current) enroute. The mud path will take you to the bottom of the falls. I personally never recommend the mud path route as the view from the bottom is not as gorgeous as from the track. 3. Beware of monkeys (if u r not in large group).

I realize u did specify numerous times that it is banned but I want to try again as it is a great place to be. Hi, First of all thank for such informative writing. I have 3 queries. 1. As per news reporting the trek is banned now. ( As on date 7th August, 2016). But some agencies are still taking booking for the trek. Is it worthy to go with them? I mean if there is a ban, how come they are taking such huge groups to the falls? 2. Is it possible to walk despite of the ban? (I ll be traveling alone) 3. Does the ban also cover the camping ?

Trekking is banned on Dudhsagar railway track.. Next best option is to try for Jeep ride from Kulem.

Trekking looks difficult but going near the falls is possible by taking the jeep ride from Kulem.

At Sonalium, no train stops. If you are coming from Madgaon, the nearest station for you will be Kulem. Yes, there is a famous stay there named “Jungle Book” run by official Goa eco-tourism. Going to Castle Rock early November , coming by train from Vasco , is it possible to get a taxi at Castle Rock back to Kulem or Vasco ? Any idea about how much it will cost ?

I do not think there will be a taxi available at castlerock…it is better to catch the train from castlerock to Kulem… the train details are given in the blog.

I think it’s phenomenal that you’ve not only shared your experience in such vivid detail (this is by far the most descriptive and updated post I’ve read) but also take the time to reply to each comment/question even after 2 years! Specific question: on June 17, 2016 at 8:54 am you mentioned there is no restriction on trekking from Castle Rock. Then on June 20, 2016 at 7:13 pm you agreed to another commenter about the trekking prohibition. The last section of your post says trekking is not illegal. Could you clarify (here or within the post) with dates (as of July 2016) what the legal status on trekking is. Also the Goa tourism website suggests taking a train from Kolem to Dudhsagar station in the monsoons, so I guess they’ve made the station functional now? Your comment?

Wel, in that case, I cannot guarantee anything but some of my freinds did this trek a while ago and it was successful… I cant say how police or authority works over there but they said I was allowed

Jeep service depends on monsoon. If it has rained a lot this month and the trail is really muddy then chances are high that the jeep trail is closed. Yeah it is possible to do so in a single day

Here are the answers to your queries:

1. It’s safe to go there but if waterfall is open or not, I am not sure… as per the last comment, waterfall is closed or banned but you better confirm with the Goa/ Karnataka tourism 2. From Kulem, you will have to hire a jeep. There is a dirt trail from Kulem to Dudhsagar. However if due to rain the trail gets muddy, there might not be any other way. Even on Jeep trail, finally you will have to walk almost a km 3. If you go by jeep, you can return by the same jeep. Else trek and total luck while returning 4. Yeah Karnataka Government Adventure Camp is there in Castlerock, they also organize trek. so better you ask them everything and even to organize for you all 5. After monsoon 6. Goa, Jog falls, Gokarna

I have been recently to Goa and now the forest department/railways had totally banned the trekking on railway line from Kulem to Dudhsagar falls. No one is allowef to trek on this route

While trekking from Kulem towards Dudhsagar waterfalls, you will cross the viewpoint. The shortest distance is taking a jeep from Kulem and next shortest is from Kulem to Dudhsagar… there is no alterbative….

I am planning to visit Dudhsagar from Goa in Jan 2016. So Jeep from Kulem will drop us to base of dudhsagar falls. Is there any way to trek from base of dudhsagar falls (the place where Jeep drops) up to the view point? If yes, then how long and difficult is the route? how much time it will take? I am planning to go to dudhsagar by Jeep from Kulem and trek up to the view point and then come back to jeep to reach Kulem. Is this possible? We may plan to take Jeep journey for one side.

Hello, it’s my first visit to goa and that too in last week of December I’ll be staying near calingute beach.. Is it possible to trek one way i.e from kulem to dudhsagar or any other and then get a jeep for return journey..? I have to get back in one day only plus i want to trek at least one way.. Is there any way to do so.. And what if on the way back someone is unable to catch the train.. Then what are the alternatives available.? Please suggest an alternative if you have in mind.. Thanks 🙂

Hi Adarsh, the bst way for you should be, getting down at Kulem and take a jeep from there but his part will skip trekking… and while returning you take the jeep back… because if you trek until dushsagar falls then you cannot take a jeep because jeep will not give seat to people who were not booked from Kulem itself….

or another way will be get down at kulem, trek until the falls and then wait for a train to stop there or atleast slow down there… cathc the train and return to kulem again or go to castleroc and from there catch the next train to goa….

So, jeeps from Kulem will take us to the base of the falls. Is there a way to trek from base of Dudhsagar falls to the Dudhsagar view point? If yes, then how is the condition of this route, is it dangerous than trekking on railway trek? how much is the distance from base to the view point and roughly how much time it may take? Is it ok to trek from view point to the base of the falls or it is ok vice versa or both are ok? Any particular info about trains starting Vasco and stopping at Dudhsagar?

We friends have planned to visit Dudhsagar day after tomorrow (i.e 14th November 2015). I see many comments posting on access ban to the Dudhsagar Sagar waterfalls. Is it still restricted? Please let me know.

We are starting from Mysore(Mysore- CastleRock Railway station- 583KMs) in the evening around 6PM & will be reaching the Goa proximity around 4AM (14th November 2015) the next day. We are preferring to access the falls by Train or by Jeep (2nd option). Please suggest and inform me about the train timings & whether I should head towards Kulem or Castle Rock Railway station to catch the train or preferring Jeep is a better option. We have plans to head towards Arambol in the noon.

Please tell us where the train halts, in dudhsagar or in sonalium? Can we get down at that stop as there is a ban. Please help us and do the needful, thank you so much in advance

Hi kush… the train halts at neither of the two stations… however… the train might slow down enough to get down… you can try that… else you will have to trek from kulem to castle rock in your case.

Is there any other train on Monday morning that may halt at those stations, I have been to dudhsagar two times trekking from castle rock side, but this time I am coming from kulrm and as there are ladies of age 50 in our group I am confused about the train halt though they are ready to walk. We can leave in any passenger or goods from madagoan on Saturday night, we have train to Bangalore on Monday night from castle rock biweekly express. Please guide us to have one trek route

Anyone planning to do the trek please note: as of August 2015, the Indian Railways have unfortunately restricted access to the waterfall, so in case you plan a visit, make sure to check whether access has been restored. We trust (and hope) that this will be a short term measure, as Dudhsagar Waterfall is at it’s best during the rains – and a lot of hiking enthusiasts have been visiting in the rains since decades.

The good news is, there’s plenty of other waterfalls around. And if it has to be Dudhsagar, with or without limitations imposed by railways, the jeep service will recommence in October.

We are running a farmstay close to Kulem, which makes a good ‘basecamp’ for visits to Dudhsagar Falls – find more info here: http://www.dudhsagarplantation.com/farmstay .

We intend to park the bike at Kulem & them walk the rail tracks.

Do you think it is a good idea or is there an easier way.

The trek is open now… it was banned but not any more.. however you never know…. no Trains stop at Sonalium stations.. so in any case you will have to either walk to the castle rock or Kulem.. from there you can get a train towards goa or other side… kindly go through the blog once again about the train timings….

Kulem side is shorter and the famous dudhsagar view comes enroute.. from castlerock side, you will have to trek more but number of tunnels and waterfalls are more… make your choice accordingly

Only case possible is caranzol to Kulem…rest others I dont thinks are possible to trek….

there is no more ban on the trek now… police persons are allowing people to see the waterfalls but bathing or going inside is banned. Or else you can take a trek from castlerock towards kulem, you will cross dudhsagar falls anyway in that case

We are two couples, planning for a one day trek to Dudhsagar on Monday morning. Planning to start the trek by 9am from Kulem and return thru Castle Rock route.

We will reach Kulem by Taxi from Goa and after the trek we need to board a train from Castle rock to Bangalore @ 11pm.

Please let me know whether this is feasible.

I mean starting the trek at 9am and finishing it before evening? Is it possible? Also Is it safe to wait in Castle rock station till 11pm for our return train?

Also please let me know the approx fare charges from Goa to Kulem in a taxi(Indica/small budget cars).

I would also like to know whether food/hotels available in castle rock/kulem railway station.

Hmm tough question though but I try to answer it to my best 🙂

Lets say you start the dudhsagar by 9 am in the morning on monday, I think you should be able to reach the falls by 14:00 comfortably provided your partner can walk on the boulders for 10-12 kms. without much luggage.

Assuming that you reach there comfortably, there is only train you can wait for towards Castlerock is at 17:00 at Dudhsagar. (NOTE: THIS TRAIN ACTUALLY DOESNOT STOP THERE BUT CHANCES ARE THERE THAT IT MIGHT SLOW DOWN @DUDHSAGAR RAILWAY STATION). However, if train slows down and you are not able to catch the train or your partner is unable to catch up (though you will have 30 seconds to a minute and monday presents very lesser crowd) then you might wait for some goods train, which have no particular timings but hopefully one should arrive.

Another option is wait for the 17310 Yaswantpur biweekly express train which will probably arrive at 22:30 at Dudhsagar but since its monday there might not be other people camping there because crowd flock on weekends mostly. and waiting in the night does not sound good to me.

On 6th July(monday)we completed the trek on time:) but the sad part was there was no rain fall for the past 4-5 days, so water level was way too normal. Also we were disappointed a lot because “WE HUMANS” have screwed up the place big time.

1). It was so dirty with lots of plastics and food waste around.

2). Locals in Kulem told us, some MBA graduate student lost his life 4-5 days ago and we witnessed around 20-30 cops for security reasons.

3). JEEP trek was closed(we checked with locals in Kulem).

Overall it was an average place/trek after the above mentioned disappointments.

We would like to visit the place again for the Jeep trek and also wanna visit the origin point.

One of my colleagues also complained about the water level and he also went on for the trek on the same weekend that you went. I think lesser water in the waterfall is not mainly due to not raining for last past a week but due to week monsoon this year. I remember, one of my another friends talking about the garbage dump there last year on 15th august weekend. It’s a huge and massive pile.

Oh, did you know how they unfortunately lost their lives?

And, yeah jeep treks are closed in the monsoon and I was expecting that by now.

I am planning to visit the falls in 2nd week of July 2015. I will be going to Kullem by Car with my wife & 2 daughters [7 Yrs & 3 Yrs] I will be disappointed if Jeep Service is not running on the day I visit due to rain. So planning a alternate by train from Kullem to Dudhsagar and back.

Please Note: With kids, Trekking more than a KM is not an option for me. I guess Bridge to Dudhsagar Falls station is about 1 KM.

Both trains do not run daily, however luckily for me– runs on Monday — the day I am visiting. If I miss these trains — Good Trains are still an option — Am I right?

None of these trains officially stop at Dudhsagar. However, they, sometimes, slow down a bit people catch up the train. Since you are with family, I dont think you will be able to catch the train until helped by someone. Same for the Goods train. Since goods trains are heavier they most of the times, stop there. but I cant say about the rush.. it depends…I think Kulem Jeep should be working.. please give it try.. I am sorry but I dont wanna predict from here about everything….

Just back from Dudhsagar Falls [13-July] with my Family including 2 kids. We were only family with kids there. I reach Kulem on time for 10:30AM train. It took just Rs. 100 for return tickets from Kulem to Castle Rock for 2 Adults + 1 Kid. I learned there as 10:30 AM train [17315-Vaso Velankanni Wkly] do not stop at Dudhsagar Station. So I had to go till Castle Rock Station and catch 11:40 AM Train [18047-Amaravati Express] for Dushsagar and reach at Dushsagar station at 12:45. Then walked to Falls in the heavy rain. Note: trains do slow down a lot at every station while going up to Castle Rock, however with Kids I did not take a risk to jump off at Dudhsagar. After an hour, walked back to Dushsagar station and caught a goods train and reached to Kulem @ 3:30PM. Few points 1. Water level was way too normal. Still the falls is awesome. 2. It was a lot dirty with lots of plastics and food waste around. 3. It was crowed even on Monday 4. JEEP and Motebikes were closed. 5. While boarding on Good Trains, few passengers helped us boarding the break van [Which I felt not necessary] even before the train stops complete. It did stop for a min, however everyone on board before that. Later those passengers turned be to “Guides” with other groups asked Rs 500 for stopping the train and help us boarding, which I disagree completely. I did pay Rs 200 as token, but even after that those Guides were kept arguing. That was the sad part of the travel. Overall Water Falls is very good and must visit for nature enthus. However my wife was not at all happy with travel part of it. I think tracking with friends would be still better. I feel it would be nice if Railways can add couple of bogies to their pushup engines and make a stop at Dudhsagar as the trains are as usual full. Please note: Goa Exp is running on alternate days due to Itarasi Cabin fire. It the only passenger training after noon to reach Castle Rock. Thanks for your tips, it was of great help.

You can either wait for some time at castlerock and start the trek early morning or you can also get down at Kulem and get fresh and start the trek. Kulem route is shorter though. But if you start from Castle rock and you manage to reach there in say 4-5 hours, around 9-10 AM in the morning… Sometimes two of these train stops at Dudhsagar (or at least they slow down sometimes) 11097 Poorna express and 17311 Chennai-vasco express… I am sharing their timings…. http://indiarailinfo.com/train/poorna-express-11097-pune-to-ers/438/76/52 and http://indiarailinfo.com/train/chennai-vasco-express-17311-mas-to-ypr/1732/35/997

Looking at your date in early september, Jeeps’service from Kulem should be closed by then. It depends on the monsoon this year. If it rains hard, biking would also be tough. However, if you bike without a pillion at the back then it might be possible but I doubt. So I better suggest you to postpone the plan by a month when the rainfalls recedes and sun shines a bit

It is possible to go to the falls by the jeep and return same day to the Kulem by afternoon and leave for Goa. Goa is not so far from there. I am not so sure about the vehicle from there but I am sure that from Kulem you might hire some cab or taxi to leave for GOA and that shouls not cost much.

COming to the availability of jeep in the monsoon: Since monsoon has started so it might be possible that jeeps have stopped going there. But there has not been much of rainfall yet so Jeeps might also be plying. You will only get to know about it once you reach there.

SO if you get a jeep there then yeah its possible to return KUlem same day and by evening to Goa but if Jeeps are not avaialable then you can look for trains at Dudhsagar falls which go to Goa. For further enquiries, you can ask at Kulem.

I have been to this Trek on june 15. As of now Jeeps are available once rainfall increases the route is completely closed. If it open then, Yes from kullem going by jeep the complete trip will take (4 Hours Max) timings: 8 am – 3:30 am) this SAFARI JEEP ROUTE OPEn after this you can reach GOA (Panjim 50kms , 2hrs drive)

Hi, thanks for non tiring reply to all questions…but still i have few questions 1. is it good to get down at KULEM or CASTLE ROCK, if coming from Hyd 2. does the jeep from Kulem to dudhsagar -wait only for 1 hr? so cant we pay for 1 way (250) and leave jeep? 3. i think we also have dudhsagar station… which train stops to and fro at this stn and i think all trains stop at various distance from fall for break check.,. so can you tell what all trains pass through this route..preferably with time. i could not find this info on google.

1. It would be better to get down at Kulem. 2. The jeep doesn’t necessarily wait for just an hour. It can wait for even around 2 hours. Like if you are in a group of 7-8 people and you book a jeep, you can ask the driver to wait for the longer times at the falls. However, it might not be possible for one way. Because the jeep has to return empty and that’s not a good business for them. 3. Sorry for the train information… I also do not have much ideas about the train running on that route…..

Please tell if we take a jeep from kulem and reach Dudhsagar view point, from there (view point) is it possible to walk upto the railway bridge which is just at the middle of the fall. How much time would it take to walk from view point to the railway bridge?

You can also cover the same on foot but around 25 kms of walking in a single day would be tough… read the blog in detail you will ideas about… yeah single day is possible:

1. Go by jeep and return by jeep to and fro Kulem 2. Go on foot and find a goods train and return by that 3. In worst case, return on foot

I along with 2 other friends have planned to do this trek in the month of July. We’ll be travelling from Hyderabad and have a short budget, so could you suggest a good itinerary or atleast shed some light on hotels near kulem, mollem or castle rock which provide accomadation below 1K.

Sir,the jeep charge mentioned here (Rs.450),is it one way or two way.( kulem to dudhsagar & back) At which point the jeep takes us….middle of the waterfall where there is the railway track.

It’s two way… check for the jeep charges, they keep on varying the charges but the differenc should not come much… They will drop around 500 mtr to 1 km before the waterfalls and then you can walk upto there….

Planning Dudhsagar trek on the 30th of this month. Can you please suggest me in detail if am opting to take Kulem route and jeep trek.

Suggestions on 1. If i could book jeep trek in advance. 2. I want to start this by morning and finish by evening as i cannot miss getting back to Panjim on the same day. 3. If you can pass on any contact numbers on the same. Thank you 🙂

Since the monsoon is over, I wish for you that Jeep track must be opened for the visitors. So, in my knowledge, there are advance bookings for the Jeep. However, once you reach Kulem, ask for the Kulem to Dudhsagar Jeep stand. You can book your slots in the Jeep and they keep on opening once they are full and I am sure on new years days, there should not be any problem waiting or so.

So yeas, if you reach Kulem, lets say around 10, the Jeep would leave you to the falls in an hour (The you will have walk around half an hour to reach to the falls, there is a proper way but little technical). In the meanwhile, the Jeep driver would wait for you for an hour or so. After you enjoy, you can return by the same jeep in another half an hour.

So, yeah its possible to return on the same day to Panjim. No problems at all. But be reminded that its gonna be really crowded on new year, if my guess is not wrong.

I am not sure of this number but this number belongs to some of the tourist center: 91 – 832 – 224132 you can try them.

Hi manish, trekking in the night would not be a good idea because you wont see anything. however, you can camp at the dushsagar at the night and catch the train next morning.

About Dudhsagar Falls

Dudhsagar Falls (lit. 'Sea of Milk') is a four-tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa. Dudhsagar Falls is amongst India's tallest waterfalls with a height of 310 m (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 metres (100 feet). The falls is located in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park among the Western Ghats. The waterfall is located near Karnataka & Goa Border. The falls is a punctuation mark in the journey of the Mandovi River from the Western Ghats to Panjim where it meets the Arabian sea. Either you launch a trek from Kulem railway station which is the most comfortable option for Mumbai , Pune side people or you start a trek from Castlerock railway station which is a most convenient option for Bangalore side people.

How to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall by train from Mumbai, Pune?

You have to reach Kulem railway station from Mumbai , and there is no direct train to reach Kulem railway station. First, you have to reach Madgaon, Goa railway station and Further, you have take passenger train to Kulem from Madgaon, Goa. the frequency of Madgaon - Kulem passenger is very less.

Best train option To reach Kulem from Mumbai

• Board the Matsyagandha Express - 12619 from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) Mumbai at 3:20 PM and reached Madgaon Junction at 1:25 AM, rest few night hours at the station
• Board Vasco Da Gama – Kulem Passenger 56962 at 8:14 AM and reached Kulem at 9:05 AM and start your trek.

Best train option to reach Dudhsagar from Pune

• There is two trekking option for Pune people. You can trek from Castle Rock and Kulem both. Catch the Goa Express 12780 from Pune at 4:20 PM and reached Castle Rock at 3:05 AM.
• If you want to trek from Kulem, then continue your journey by the same train and reached Kulem at 4:35 AM.

How to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall by train from Bangalore?

There are two trekking options for Bangalore people that are Castle Rock and Kulem. There is a direct train available for both these stations, but these trains run a few days of the week.

Best train option to reach Dudhsagar from Bangalore

• Catch the Chennai Central – Vasco Da Gama Express 17311 from Yesvantpur Junction at 9:35 PM and reached Castle Rock at 9:25 AM.
• If you want to trek from Kulem then continue your journey by the same train and reached Kulem at 11:04 AM.

Dudhsagar Waterfall is one of the most stunning natural attractions in Goa. It is a four-tiered waterfall that plunges from 310 meters (1017 feet) and spans 30 meters (98 feet) in width. But How to Visit Dudhsagar Waterfall, which also as “Sea of Milk” in Hindi, as the fall resembles a stream of milk flowing down from the sky. There are no direct buses to Dudhsagar Waterfall, but you can take a bus from Panaji or Madgaon to Kulem or Mollem, the nearest town to the waterfall. The bus fare is around 100 rupees (1.4 USD) per person. The bus journey takes about two hours. From Kulem or Mollem, you can take a jeep safari or trek to the waterfall (more on later).

If you have your car or rent one, you can drive to Dudhsagar Waterfall from Panaji or Madgaon. The road is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Panaji and 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Madgaon. The road condition is good until Mollem but becomes rough and narrow afterward. You will need a four-wheel drive vehicle to navigate the terrain. You can park your car at Mollem or Kulem and then take a jeep safari or trek to the waterfall (more on that later).

If you feel adventurous, bike to Dudhsagar Waterfall from Panaji or Madgaon. The bike distance is similar to the car distance, but you will need more time and stamina to cover it. You can rent a bike from various places in Goa for around 300 rupees (4 USD) daily. You will also need a helmet and a valid driving license. You can park your bike at Mollem or Kulem and then take a jeep safari or trek to the waterfall (more on that later).

Once you reach Kulem or Mollem, you have two options to access Dudhsagar Waterfall: by jeep safari or by trekking. Both options have advantages and disadvantages so you can choose according to your preference, budget, and fitness level.

Jeep Safari

The jeep safari is the easiest and most convenient way to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall. You can book a jeep safari from Kulem or Mollem for around 400 rupees (5 USD) per person, which includes the entry fee to the national park and a life jacket for swimming at the waterfall. The jeep safari takes about an hour and covers a distance of 12 kilometers (7 miles). 

The jeep ride is bumpy and thrilling as it crosses several streams and rocky patches. You can enjoy the scenic views of the forest and the river as you approach the waterfall. The jeep will drop you at a point near the waterfall, from where you have to walk for about 10 minutes to reach the base of the waterfall. You can spend about an hour swimming, taking photos, and relaxing at the waterfall. The jeep will pick you up and return to Kulem or Mollem.

Get off the train at Castle Rock station. Castle Rock is the last station that lies within the border of Karnataka. There are a series of rail tunnels, the longest one being Tunnel 2, which stretches a distance of 2.4 km.

The trek from Castle Rock to Dudhsagar is 11 km long. Follow the railway track all the way to the waterfall. It passes through dense forests and smaller waterfalls within Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. It takes around 6-7 hours to complete the trek. One can camp at the Dudhsagar Station, as camping is allowed here. It is advisable to carry your tents and sleeping bags along.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls From Goa:

Since the time of the ban, trekking to the waterfalls along the railway tracks is not possible. For people who still want to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls, an alternative way is using Jeeps available at the entrance to the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary

The entrance to Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary lies about a 10-15 minute walk from Kollem Railway station. The fees are as follows

Entry fees  – Rs 20 Camera fees – Rs 300 Videography fees – Rs 5000

Jeep trip to the waterfall – Rs 2500 for an entire jeep. It is usually shared among 5-6 people. So per head cost of Rs 400-50. The ride to the base of the fall takes about 45 minutes through a bumpy off-road trail and hence taking your vehicle is not recommended. Also, there are multiple streams crisscrossing the off-road trail and only sturdy jeeps of 4WD SUVs can navigate them.

Once at the base it’s hardly 5 mins to the waterfall. Your jeep will wait for your there for an hour and a half and thereafter bring you back to the entrance of the sanctuary.

At the time of updating this information, trekking has been banned, but there have been unconfirmed reports of the trekking being allowed starting monsoon of 2019. We strongly advise getting confirmed details before heading for a trek.

Enjoy your travel (monsoon is the Best time)

Carry efficient monsoon gear (raincoat, poncho), shoes, torch and sufficient food. During monsoon, there are many streams to fill your bottles. During other seasons, carry enough water to last you the entire trek. Confirm train tickets.

Respect Nature, do not dirty this beautiful place. In case of an approaching train, walk away from the track to a safe distance. Do not walk in groups inside a tunnel. Walk one behind the other.

Clean and carry your trash at the camping site of Dudhsagar. Dispose of it at the designated disposal provided by the Indian Railways and the Forest Department.

➤ What to Carry for the trek

No, stuffing it all in isn’t the right way to do it  Packing a backpack correctly saves precious time that you might waste trying to find your things later. It is wise to spend some time learning what goes into packing a backpack.

What should I pack?  On a trek, you only get what you take. Something as simple as a forgotten matchbox can cripple your cooking plans throughout the trek. So, it’s essential to prepare early and prepare well. To begin with, make a checklist. While shopping, remember this thumb rule – keep it light. “Every item needs to be light. This ensures that your backpack, on the whole, stays light,” says Sandhya UC, co-founder of Indiahikes. Balancing out heavy items with light ones isn’t going to have the same effect as having all light items. “Always opt for good quality, light items,” says Sandhya.

How much should my bag weigh?

“Your backpack for a weekend trek should weigh between 8 and 10 kg,” explains Arjun Majumdar, co-founder of Indiahikes, “To break it down, your tent should weigh around 2.5 kg, your sleeping bag, around 1.5 kg, and the ration, stove and clothes should constitute the other 5 kg.” The best way to plan is by concentrating on the necessities – food, shelter and clothes. Gather only those things that you’ll need to survive. Do not pack for ‘if’ situations. “That’s one of the common mistakes that people make – packing for ‘if situations’. It only adds to the baggage that you can do without on a trek,” says Sandhya.

Trekking hack

One good way to go about it is to prepare a list of absolute essentials. Start with the most essential and end with the least essential. That way, when you feel you are overshooting the limit, you can start eliminating from the bottom. Another tip is to be smart while packing clothes. Invest in light. wash and wear fabrics. “Replace a sweater with two t-shirts,” adds Sandhya. Layering is  the  mantra when it comes to trekking. Refer to Sandhya’s clothes list to pack smart.

How to pack  The thumb rule for this one is to eliminate air spaces. Make sure that everything is packed tightly, especially clothes and jackets, as they tend to take up maximum air space. Put in all the large items first. Then squeeze in the smaller ones in the gaps. This ensures minimum air space. A good way to pack clothes is by using the Ranger Roll method.

Where to pack  Bottom  Sleeping bag : Make this your base layer. Sleeping bags tend to be voluminous, but do not weigh much. They’re perfect for the bottom of the bag.  Tent : Just like the sleeping bag, even tents are voluminous and light. Keep the tent poles separately and place the fabric at the bottom of the backpack. Middle  Heavy jacket : Roll up the jacket in a tight ball and place it in the middle of the backpack, close to your back. The middle region of the backpack should always have the heaviest items. You can store other things like rations or mini stoves in the middle.  Other clothes : Roll other clothes and place them in the remaining space, to fill air gaps.

Backpack essentials

Top  Water : Water, although heavy, needs to be easily accessible. So put it in the topmost region of your backpack.  Medicine box : This is another component that you wouldn’t want to be scavenging for when in need.  Poncho : It could rain at any time in the mountains. So, ponchos should be accessible easily. Also, having a waterproof poncho at the top of the backpack provides additional waterproofing to items in the bag.

➤ How to Get Fit for the trek

Cardiovascular endurance

The secret to ascending any trail lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging every day. Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace every day. Swimming, cycling, and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too. Strength This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set. Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your workout.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises – stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles, and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however, light can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek. Working out indoors

About Dudhsagar

Dudhsagar Falls (lit. 'Sea of Milk') is a four-tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa. Dudhsagar Falls is amongst India's tallest waterfalls with a height of 310 m (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 metres (100 feet). The falls is located in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park among the Western Ghats. The waterfall is located near Karnataka & Goa Border.

The falls is a punctuation mark in the journey of the Mandovi River from the Western Ghats to Panjim where it meets the Arabian sea. The area is surrounded by deciduous forests with rich biodiversity. The falls are not particularly spectacular during the dry season but during the monsoon season, however, the falls are fed by rains and form a huge force of water.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls Trek, Tambdi Surla | Hyderabad

The  Sea of Milk  as they call it, Dudhsagar, is a trek to savor. The waterfall located in the middle of majestic Western Ghats is surrounded by lush greenery. Dudhsagar is the  fourth largest waterfall  in India at a height of more than  1000 feet . 

The trek starts at Kulem railway station, adjacent to the railway track and through the forest sometimes. The  22 km up and down trek  of Dudhsagar falls usually takes  6 to 7 hours  to finish in a leisurely way. The muddy trails, sticky paths, dense forest , streams  to cross – we have it all during this amazing trek.

There is a natural pool at the bottom of the falls where we are allowed to take a dip with  life jackets  when the flow is not high. Dudhsagar is so huge that a moving  Train  passing on a railway bridge across the backdrop of waterfalls  appears like a toy !

Dudhsagar is a place where one can truly experience  nature in all its glory.  A relaxing train journey back home is what you exactly need to cherish the  unforgettable image  of Dudhsagar on your mind.

We will also go on a guided trek to the offbeat and untouched  Tambdi Surla waterfalls . An ancient  Shiva temple  with the same name – Tambdi Surla – nestled amidst dense jungle, with the backdrop of rolling western ghats is an added attraction, especially for peace lovers.

Day 0 - Schedule

• Start from Hyderabad, an overnight journey by sleeper train to Hubli.

Day 1 - Schedule

• Switch to a hired private vehicle, take the journey to Mollem – in the heart of Mahavir wildlife sanctuary.
• Have Breakfast on our way at a local restaurant.
• Check in to our stay. For now, we shall give 1 or 2 rooms based on group size just to freshen up and put luggage. Later in the evening, we will assign more rooms for sleeping.
• Grab your packed lunch and get set for an easy trek to the offbeat Tamdi Surla Waterfalls located in the deep jungle.
• Explore beautiful Tambdi Surla Temple and the Surla River before the trek. It usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours of trek to reach waterfalls.
• Initial part of the trek is easy. We need to cross many small streams to move ahead. Last 1 Km of trek is steep.
• Play in the ice-cold water, get wet, get muddy, take a lot of pictures.
• Have your lunch overlooking the beautiful waterfalls surrounded by thick greenery.
• Trek back to the starting point, journey back to the homestay by evening.
• Spend some leisurely time chitchatting and playing some group games. Our trek leader will organize lots of fun activities among the group.
• Finish your dinner and retire for the day early.

Day 2 - Schedule

• Wake up call at 4:45 AM by our trek leader.
• Quick freshen up and get set for the mighty Dudhsagar Trek with trekking shoes, raincoat, armed with hand sanitizer to fight leeches.
• Safely put your luggage at our homestay, take the bumpy offroad jeep ride to the trek starting point in Collem.
• Trek through the muddy trails, dense forest, along railway track, cross river streams to reach the big daddy of waterfalls The Dudhsagar. Finish breakfast en route.
• Enjoy the view of the majestic falls almost dipping down from another world.
• From the bottom of the falls, watch as a Train passes by on the railway bridge at the top.
• Play in the water if allowed at the time.
• After spending a good amount of time appreciating the natural wonder, Dudhsagar, trek back to Collem by early afternoon.
• You can have quick Lunch at a local restaurant after the trek.
• Get back to rooms, grab your luggage, start the journey back towards Hubli.
• It takes 3.5 hours journey to reach Hubli from our stay. So you have to be on time as per your Trek Leader’s instructions.
• Catch your return train in the evening.

• Reach home in the morning.
• Share your thrilling Dudhsagar trek story with your friends and family

What to Expect

• This trip involves  basic facilities  in terms of food, travel, and stay without any luxury, whatsoever.
• This is a group trip with shared model. It may not suit everyone – especially for those expecting privacy and comfort. It best suits for people who wish to  socialize .
• Please do not book this trip if you are not okay with above points.

Special Notes:

• To enter Goa border, you will need to carry a COVID negative RTPCR test report taken within 72 hours.
• Otherwise, a Rapid Antigen Test will be done at Goa border at a cost of 270 INR per person
• There is no luxury involved in this entire trip. This is a backpacking trip with basic facilities.

Seasonal variations:

• June to Sept (monsoon months): Thick clouds, persistent rains, leeches, plenty of water in Dudhsagar falls. We may not be allowed to take a dip in the natural pool because of the fierce force of water. Trekking is allowed in these 3 months only, as Jeeps which are operated by the local tourist boards, cannot pass by the streams. 
• Oct to Dec (winter): As rains reduce, Jeeps take the turn of ferrying people to Dudhsagar. Trekking is banned at Dudhsagar once Jeep path clears. However, another waterfall called Tambdi Surla is good to trek in these months. You may refer to another trip itinerary named: “Dudhsagar Jeep Trails with Tambdi Surla Waterfalls trek.”
• Jan to May (winter, summer): As Dushsagar is a seasonal waterfall, water levels would have considerably reduced. Better to avoid Dushsagar in these months.

• A lightweight large Backpack for the trip (no suitcase, no trolley)
• A small backpack for the trek (to carry Lunch packet, water bottle, snacks, etc)
• Photo identity proof with address (Aadhar/Passport/Voter ID)
• Poncho or rainproof jacket with a hood (from June to September)
• Track pants, full sleeve T-shirt for the trek
• Cap/Hat (to avoid getting tanned)
• Sunglasses (to keep your eyes fresh)
• Power bank, charger, camera, binoculars (if you wish to)
• Proper water bottle for your trip. You may fill at our homestay
• Disposable garbage covers (To separate used/unused, dry/wet clothes)
• Good grip trekking shoes or sandals
• Your personal medications, if any
• Pair of water wear to take a dip in the waterfalls
• Carrying a handwash/sanitizer/tissues will help during the trip
• Carry your jerkin/sweater – it can get cold at night
• Carry a lil bit of cash for Sunday Lunch, Dinner and misc. Expenses
• Don’t carry expensive items. You are responsible for your own belongings.

What's next after booking your trip?

• A Whatsapp group shall be created on the trip day and Vehicle & Trip Leader details will be shared.
• It is mandatory to share your personal information with the team along with a copy of your government approved ID card.
• You will need to share your co-traveler(s) details if you have booked more than one seat.
• Live location of the vehicle will be sent in the group once it starts at the first point.

Terms & Conditions

• The itinerary is fixed. No special requests to change itinerary/schedule shall be entertained. Do not give advice(s) to the Trip Leader(s) to change the itinerary.
• Cooperate with the organizer(s) in following the schedule set for the day (especially getting up and getting ready in the morning). This will ensure travelers won’t miss out on the real fun part that is traveling.
• Every traveler is responsible for his/her for your own safety. Don’t indulge in any illegal or silly activity that causes harm to you or fellow travelers.
• Do not wander into the forest away from the designated trail for treks. There may be snakes, scorpions, and dangerous animals.
• Unexpected situations: It may happen we do not cover all the places mentioned in the itinerary because of unpredictable reasons like bad weather, landslides, wild animal presence, abrupt blocking of sites by the police/forest department, delay in travel because of an issue with our group itself, traffic conditions, etc. In most cases, if the time permits, the organizer(s) will take travelers to an alternative place. But in some cases, we may have to skip a place altogether.
• Absolutely no littering. We swear to protect our environment.
• No alcohol & smoking during travel, treks, and other outdoor activities. There would be a separate window and space (usually at night) to have these at the campsite/homestay for interested people.
• Travelers are expected to respect each other and help each other. Avoid discussing sensitive matters like sex, politics, and religion/caste/race.
• Using foul or abusive language, eve-teasing, arguing with fellow travelers/organizer(s), and/or involving in the physical assault will not be accepted and will stand a chance of being deserted by the group then and there.
• The event will stand canceled if less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek which will be informed 24 hours before the trip start time.
• Every traveler is expected to sign a liability/waiver form given by the organizer(s) after boarding the vehicle. This liability form will discharge Muddie Trails of any unexpected incident like injury/death/theft etc.

Cancellation & Refund

Cancellation by traveler.

• 50% refund shall be done if you inform us about your cancellation before 48 hours of the event start time. An email has to be sent to [email protected] to raise a cancellation request.
• No refund/postponing is allowed within 48 hours of the event start time whatever is the reason (Health, Accident, Covid, Family crisis, Office issue, or anything else).
• No refund/postponing is allowed for partial payment – booking fee – which is done to book your slot.
• No refund during/after the event.

Cancellation by Muddie Trails

Muddie Trails may decide to cancel the event if there are less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek.

What if we don’t get the minimum number of people for the trip? We have 2 options in this case: Option 1: Complete refund. Option 2: Switch to any other trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.

Cancellation due to external factors

Muddie Trails may have to cancel the event in case of external factors that are beyond our control like Natural Disasters, Extreme Weather Conditions, Red Alerts, Political Disturbances, Bandh/Curfews, Local Issues, Road Blocks, Train cancellations, Covid-19 or any other disease outbreaks etc.

In these scenarios:

• No Refund is allowed.
• 100% trip amount can be used for any other new trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.
• Once you confirm your participation on the new trip, all the above Cancellation policies will apply for the same.

How difficult is Dudhsagar Trek?

It falls under a moderate difficulty level. Even first-timers may attempt this trek. It gives a great experience of trekking in the wet and wild environment of dense rainforest.

How long is Dudhsagar Trek?

It’s about 10 to 11 Km one way. However, it’s not really a steep trek. Anyone with little stamina will be able to do Dudhsagar trek.

Which is the best time to trek Dudhsagar?

The trek is only open from June to Aug (3 months of the year). After this, Jeeps will start operation and trekking will be banned till the end of the season (December).

The mighty hills of western ghats have always been a heaven for nature lovers and trekkers owing to its abundance of water bodies and flora & fauna. The Dudhsagar waterfalls located about 28kms from Goa near the borders of Karnataka are no exception either. At a height of 1017 ft and an average width of a100 ft, it is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with an 11km long trek trail known as the Dudhsagar trek trail leading to the falls.

The word Dudhsagar means ‘sea of milk’ indicating the way the water looks when it falls down the hill – massive and foamy white. The Dudhsagar trek is well known all over the country and it is visited by hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists daily during the trekking season.

Dudhsagar Trek – How to reach the base?

The nearest railway station to the falls is the Dudhsagar railway station, which is just a kilometer away from it. However, if you want to reach the place you need to take the train to either the Kulem station or Castlerock station as there aren’t any trains that stop by Dudhsagar station now.

Kulem station in Goa is about 10 km away from the falls while the Castlerock railway station in Karnataka is about 45kms away. As for which station to drop by, it depends on where you are coming from. If you are coming from the Southside, it will be convenient for you to choose the Castlerock station and if you are from Mumbai, Pune, or any other city north to the falls it will be easier if you drop by the Kulem station in Goa.

If you wish to come by road, you need to take National Highway 4-A, to Mollem, and then travel to Kulem from there.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls – How to get there?

There are mainly two ways to reach the falls – one by foot via the Dudhsagar trek trail or by jeeps which will take you all the way down to the lake.

Dudhsagar Trek Trail

If you are visiting the place to enjoy trekking , the 11km long trekking path through the Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary awaits you. The most special aspect of this trail is an old railway track amidst the dense forest that leads to the falls making Dudhsagar trek a lot more interesting for trekkers. They can traverse along this track to reach the falls, which will be a lifetime experience for many.

Many factors make this track favored by trekkers. One is that it leads their way to the falls. Also, the whole 4-6hrs walk through the track is a treat to the eyes and renders a next-level experience to the trekkers. It is sided by the lush greenery of the western ghats and if you are lucky enough you can spot some exotic wildlife of the ghats. Another attraction of the trail is a 200m long railway tunnel that falls along the path. You can also see a few small waterfalls along the way.

If you prefer to take the trekking trail, make sure it is open during the time of your visit as it is not open throughout the year and had also been shut for some time during normal open days due to Covid. So, before your visit just check with the local authorities or your tour operator whether the trail is open or not.

In Jeep via the Sanctuary

Even though the trekking trail is the most mesmerizing one, it may not be favored by every tourist as you need to walk 4-6 hrs straight with your backpack and raingear. So, there is an option for a jeep safari through the dense jungle and alongside small streams.

More than 400 jeeps operate in the place to take tourists to and from the falls. You have to reach Kulem and from there these jeeps will take you to the waterfall.  For a single person, it will cost you around 500-600 INR for the jeep safari with each jeep accommodating around 6-7 people. They will take you downhill through the forest, traversing muddy terrain and streams on the way. At the foot of the falls, they will drop you and will wait for 1.5 hrs for you there. If you need to stay for another hour, you can by paying an additional 500 INR as waiting charges.

When you take the jeep safari, at the entrance of the sanctuary, you need to pay entry fees and additional camera fees if you are carrying any with you. Also, tourists must rent life jackets to keep them safe in the lake downhill. So, the total cost will be around 800 per person excluding the camera fee. If you don’t want to get to the waterfalls via the Dudhsagar trek trail, but still want to enjoy the forest and the Fall, a jeep safari is the best option for you.

Things to do in Dudhsagar

Trekking & camping.

The trek trail including the old railway track to the Dudhsagar falls is frequented by trekkers except for heavy rains, when the trail will be closed as there are chances of heavy landslides and at that time the fall overflows to the railway bridge in the path. Hence considering the safety of the tourists, entry to the trail is denied at that time. All other times, trekkers with their camping gears packed at their back are a regular sight in the tracks.

The camping sites near the falls are the best place to enjoy nature at its best and get away from the hustle & bustle of your daily life.

When choosing to trek the Dudhsagar trail many are confused on whether they should go alone or have a guide with them. Will the authorities allow trekking without a guide? Of course, they do.

But whether to go with or without a guide depends on your trekking expertise. If you are a frequent trekker or you have walked through the Dudhsagar trail before and are quite familiar with the track, you can surely go alone. But if you are new to this sport and trail, we recommend you have a guide hired to take you there. Also, make sure you have your raingear as it can rain at any time in the hills.

Also, if you intend to camp, make sure you are fully equipped for the activity. Make a checklist of all the things you need to pack before your journey and be sure to take them all. By taking them all what is meant is ONLY and MUST take what is necessary. It is very important to keep the weight of your backpack low to ease your struggle during the trek. Also, you shouldn’t omit the necessities either, be it your food or light or things as small as a matchbox.

Dudhsagar Devi Temple

The temple is located en route to the falls along the jungle route you take during the jeep safari. Hence it is visited by tourists who go to the waterfall. If you want to make a separate visit to the temple, cabs are available at cheaper rates to take you there.

Dudhsagar Lake

Dipping yourself in the lake down the waterfall is a must activity during your visit. With shiny pebbles and clear waters, the lake is indeed worth your time. As the waters are crystal clear, you can see the fishes swimming around. Also, from the lake, you can get a full view of the fall and the railway bridge. It is indeed a mesmerizing experience to play along with the fishes in the lake while taking a glimpse of the 300m high waterfalls.

Jeep Safari

Jeep safari is meant for those who do not want to take long walks through the trail. It can safely take you downhill within 45 minutes. The jeep route is through the dense forests of the Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary within which the waterfall is located.

The path to the Falls is through damped midways and many jungle streams which is indeed a mesmerizing experience. Also, since the safari is through the forest you get to see the rich vegetation of the sanctuary along with a few species of fauna if you are keen and lucky enough.

Final Words

Goa is always known to its visitors for its beaches, pubs, and nightlife. But what many do not know is that being occupied by the majestic hills of the Western Ghats, the part of Goa near its Karnataka border is dotted with many waterfalls and trails like the Dudhsagar trek trail. Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls By Train

To reach the Dudhsagar Waterfall, you need to head to the Kulem station, which is adjacent to the waterfall. To catch the train, you can board it either at Vasco De Gama or Madgaon station in Margao. The train fare is economical, typically under 50 rupees per ticket.

Along this route, there is a train that runs frequently throughout the day, similar to an electric train. Alternatively, the regular train that travels from Goa to Delhi also makes a stop at Kulem station. It’s recommended that you check the schedule and confirm the availability of the Kulem stop for this particular train.

It’s advisable to check the return train schedules in advance, as they may vary with the seasons.

Reach Dudhsagar Goa By Road

From Colem, visitors have the option to hop on a shared jeep, costing approximately INR 500 per person for a group of seven. The 45-minute jeep ride goes through a rugged yet scenic jungle trail. Following this ride, a 10-minute trek over the rocky terrain leads to the majestic Dudhsagar Falls.

Only 300 jeeps are allowed to enter the area each day to ensure the preservation of the environment. This occasionally leads to extended wait times and queues for getting tickets.

Reach Dudhsagar Falls By Air

Goa International Airport, also known as Dabolim Airport, is where you need to land before hiring a cab to reach the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. You will be covering a distance of about 60 km to reach the sanctuary.

Trekking – The Most Immersive Way to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls in Goa

The most immersive (and adventurous) way to reach Dudhsagar Falls is to trek your way to the main attraction. There are three main treks to the waterfall, namely, Castle Rock, Sonaulim, and Kulem. For safety reasons, the state government sometimes imposes a temporary ban on trekking in the area. Visitors must ensure that they comply with any such measures that are in place during their visit.

You need to get down at the Castle Rock railway station and follow the scenic trail to the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary.

The trail takes you through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, and it’s advisable to go with a local guide who knows the route well. The trek offers a more immersive experience of the lush wilderness but can be physically demanding, so be prepared for a moderate level of difficulty.

Dudhsagar Waterfall trek – One day adventurous trek near Goa

I remember in no particular order what I loved the most about my journey to Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek . Was it the air? Was it the foggy weather? Or, was it just the vibe and zest of witnessing something so magical? “Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station”!! Abhi!! Aren’t you getting too poetic? Ha-ha!!

Located in the Sanguem Taluka of Goa , and also popular among the locals by Tambdi Surla, Dudhsagar Waterfall is one of India’s tallest waterfalls falling from a spectacular height of 310 meters. Originating at the Deccan Plateau in the state of Karnataka and winding its way through the Western Ghats, the river Mandovi plummets over the highest peaks thus forming the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Doing justice to its name, Dudhsagar which means the Sea of Milk , when cascades from such height create an illusion as if someone is pouring gallons of milk from the top of a mountain. The milky water that flow with gush is a treat to eyes. The Dudhsagar Waterfall can definitely be counted in the list of the most beautiful Waterfalls in India.

The waterfall gained even more popularity among people after it got featured in scenes of the blockbuster Bollywood film ‘ Chennai Express ‘. The falls are at their zenith during the monsoon months of July to September, although they are a popular tourist attraction all year round.

How to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek base village

The cheapest and the most convenient way to reach Dudhsagar waterfall trek base village (Kulem) is via railways. Kulem railway station is very well connected to major Indian cities like New Delhi, Madgaon, Chennai, Pune, Howrah, Bhubaneswar, and Bhopal directly via railways. Catch a train from any of these cities which reaches Kulem in the early morning time. For train bookings, visit IRCTC .

If you are already in Goa, you can take Vasco – Kulem passenger train that runs every day or the VSG Howrah express to reach Kulem early morning. Don’t confuse Kulem by Kalem as they are different stations. Those who prefer bus journey over railways can take a bus to Kulem from Panaji / Madgaon .

Trekking and road routes options to witness the beauty of Dudhsagar Waterfall

Owing to the tragic incidents in the recent past, there are various restrictions which have been implemented in the trekking routes of Dudhsagar waterfalls. Castle Rock trekking route to reach the Dudhsagar Waterfall has been permanently closed . One would be heavily fined if found trekking through this route along the railway tracks.

The only allowed trekking route is the Kulem- Dudhsagar route which is 12 kms one way. And, one needs to hire a compulsory guide if looking to trek through this route. The same can be hired from the Kulem village. Charges are around INR 3000 per guide which can take a group of 7-10 people. Also, no one is allowed on the bridge where exactly the Dudhsagar waterfall is located.

Trekking routes for Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek

The other option to witness the beauty of Dudhsagar waterfall is taking the Jeep Safari from Kulem which is organized by the Goa Forest Department. The jeeps cover a distance of around 8-9 kms and drop you a few meters before the base of the waterfall. The jeep charges are INR 3500 for a maximum of 7 people and the camera charges are 50 INR.

Note : The jeep safari is closed in the monsoon months of June to September. It starts somewhere in the first week of October depending on rains.

If you have no plans to visit the Dudhsagar falls separately, you can still experience the breathtaking views of this majestic waterfall from the train. You can put Dudhsagar Waterfall Camp Site on Gmaps to track how near your train is to the waterfall.

Difficulty level of Dudhsagar Waterfall Trek

In terms of difficulty, I would rate Dudhsagar waterfall trek somewhere between easy to moderate level trek . The total distance between Kulem and Dudhsagar falls is around 12 kms and takes around 3-4 hours to reach the same. The trail is mostly flat with just a few uphill patches.

My Journey to Dudhsagar Waterfall

To be frank, on all my three visits to the touristy state of Goa before August 2013, I had never heard about the Dudhsagar waterfall. It was only when the famous Bollywood movie Chennai express was released that I came to know about this breathtaking waterfall. One of the scenes of the movie was shot with Dudhsagar Waterfall in the background. Looking at the beauty of the fall, I decided that it won’t be too long before I make a visit to this nature’s gift.

Finally, a year later in the month of September, I booked my tickets to reach Dudhsagar Waterfall base village. I boarded the Goa express from Pune which reaches Castle rock station around 3:00 am. I had planned to trek all along the railway track starting from Castle rock to Dudhsagar Fall and then toward Kulem to end the trek.

Note : There were no restrictions at all when I did my trek. Ban to trek through Castle rock station route has been implemented recently due to the mishaps in recent years.

The trek distance between the Castle rock station and Dudhsagar Waterfall is around 14 kms and takes around 5 hours one way to cover the distance. I decided to wait for the daylight to begin with my trek. The moment I started with my trek, it started raining very heavily. As I had a waterproof bag and a raincoat with me, I decided not to wait and carry on with the trek.

Within a few minutes, I was walking on the tracks surrounded by dense forest. Hiking along the tracks is not as easy as it seems. There are almost 11 tunnels which one need to cross before making it to the waterfall. Walking in those dark tunnels is enjoyable but one needs to be very careful as a train may pass by anytime.

The views of the surroundings all along the way to Dudhsagar waterfall were just fabulous. I never felt like that it had almost been 4 hours since I was walking along the tracks. Finally, after crossing the 11 th tunnel, I made it to the Dudhsagar Waterfall. There were literally tears in my eyes. Tear of watching something that magical. Due to ongoing heavy rains, the Dudhsagar fall was gushing with a full flow and everything seemed foggy.

After witnessing this beauty from every possible angle, I started my journey towards Kulem. Once you pass the 12 th and the 13 th tunnel, there is a viewpoint of Dudhsagar waterfall. The view of the entire falls from this point is just spectacular. After walking for around 4 hours, I made it to the Kulem Station. I was tired after almost walking for around 10 hours  on the railway tracks but the overall experience of the trek kept my energy levels high.

With all the delightful memories of the trek to Dudhsagar Waterfall two years ago, I was back here again in the year 2016. I combined it with my journey to Goa as I wanted to experience the taxi ride which takes to the base of the waterfall. The taxi ride which passes through dense jungle and few river crossings is an amazing experience in itself. One needs to walk a few meters to reach the base of the fall from where the taxi drops.

As the water from fall splash on your face, you will get a feeling that heaven is preaching you. That great heaven where one wishes to go after death is teaching its folk about kindness. It gives us an example of how even the great of greatest thing have to bow down to show and gain respect. With all the beautiful memories of the falls yet again, I left for Pune.

Best time to visit Dudhsagar waterfall Trek

I would recommend one to avoid visiting the waterfalls in the monsoon months of July- September as lots of incidents have occurred during this span. Months of October to November is what I would highly recommend as the rains have just gone by leaving behind the lushest green surroundings and a moderate water flow level at the Dudhsagar Waterfall.

Stay and Food Options at Dudhsagar Waterfall trek

The stay options in the Dudhsagar region are limited and are mostly expensive. What I would recommend is to take a stay somewhere in Goa and plan to visit the falls on a day tour. For stay options in Goa, you can refer my earlier post: The Undiluted Essence of South Goa Soil.

This journey was a mesmerizing one. You know I realized Goa was calling me, not for its beach, cuisine or night bazaar but to witness something eternally beautiful, something known as Dudhsagar Waterfall. My eyes smiled and I breathe with the feeling of being content. And as I inhaled the fragrance of that place for last time, heaven whispered ‘Do come again’.

Very nice to see the pics and the “less crowded” trek. Do also visit Tambdi Surla waterfalls which may not be as big as Dudhsagar but its worth a visit. There is also a Mahadev Temple at the base of the Trek.

The gushing water from the streams creates an illusion of milk flowing through the hill slopes. Well, to put it straight, ‘Dudhsagar’ literally translates to  Sea of Milk  describing the milky white water trickling down  a height of 1,050m . The  5th highest waterfall  in India is one of those picturesque falls that give you goosebumps just by looking at the tremendous force of the gushing water.

If you’ve always thought that  Goa  is just about beer and beaches, then it’s time that you put on your adventurous boots and join us, as we head off to explore these breathtaking falls. Also included in this trip is a mystery beach, that is bound to leave you awestruck with its raw beauty and picturesque landscapes. We were impressed by these beauties, so we put this itinerary together to let you enjoy these hidden gems on a laid-back holiday to Goa.

• Wake up to the chirps of birds and the roar of the Mandovi river beside the camp
• Have breakfast, pack your stuff, and board the bus
• Visit the lesser-known beaches of Karwar
• Head back to Bangalore after Lunch
• Reach Bangalore by 6 AM ( approx ) on Day 3

Our trek to Dudhsagar Falls begins promptly at 8:30 AM in adherence to stringent guidelines. Access will be restricted beyond 9 AM.

Our journey from Bangalore necessitates an early start, commencing at 5 PM from the initial pickup point. We kindly urge all participants to proactively plan their schedules.

Upon the bus's arrival at each boarding point, we maintain a precise 10-minute waiting period. We kindly request punctual attendance.

As stipulated by the Goa Forest Department, entry to the waterfall is prohibited.

A forest department guide will be allocated for every group of 8 individuals.

Our accommodations will only be accessible after completing the trek. Basic arrangements for refreshment are available at Kulem Village, allowing us to commence the trek at the earliest convenience.

We begin our journey on Friday evening. We’ll start early compared to the usual trek as we have over 560 KMs to cover. Reaching on time is very essential as the trek is a long one.  So, once we get out of the iconic Bangalore traffic and hit the Mumbai- Bangalore highway, our energetic trek leads will take over. Armed with fun activities & ice-breaking sessions, you’ll soon feel at home after knowing about everyone else on the bus. The trek leads will brief the itinerary of the trip ahead and leave you to catch some much-needed sleep.

Multiple sharing basis separate for men and women Doms / Rooms / Tents

If you look outside, you should be on the narrow country roads of Goa, surrounded by vast lands of untouched wilderness. Embrace the untouched Goa while we slowly drive into Kulem through winding roads & picturesque landscapes.

The stay is one of the best you can find in Kulem and is only a minute’s walk from where the bus will be parked. Get your luggage, check into the designated rooms & freshen up quickly. Grab breakfast from the buffet table, pick up your packed lunch and start the trek. It is mandatory to have a guide and life jackets along with you. Without these, entry into the national park will be prohibited. The initial walk is along the train tracks. This portion of the trek is about 4 KMs but is the most daunting one of all. It truly tests your patience and endurance while you’re taking baby steps. Watch out for the odd train and get off the tracks. You will be accompanied by chirps of birds, running streams, some hidden waterfalls & of course your new-found family.

No need to rush on this track as we have ample time to cover the rest of the trek, more so because of the slippery rocks on the tracks. After about 4 KMs of walking on the tracks, we enter the jeep trail.

The trail from here is pretty flat and is filled with running water streams and dense evergreen forest stretches. After about 40 minutes of walking, you will reach the village of Sonaulim, which is marked by a shack selling refreshments and a Hindu temple on your right-hand side.

The trail gets narrow from here, as you take a shortcut to avoid a longer jeep trail. The falls are only a 30 Mins walk from here.Once you take the shortcut, you will get to see the adjoining mountain ranges. These ranges are the physical boundaries between Karnataka & Goa. After a walk through the muddy trail, you will encounter a hanging bridge. The bridge is slightly inclined, so be sure to hold onto the rope and walk slowly.

Once on the other side of the bridge, the narrow trail continues until we hit the jeep trail again. You can get the first glimpse of the mighty Waterfall on this trail. And soon after getting a glimpse of the falls, you will see the entrance to Dudhsagar falls. There are changing rooms and a police outpost as well. After crossing a river stream filled with slippery rocks, and water flowing with incredible force, we’ll reach the foot of the fall. We’ll stop here for lunch and refresh ourselves with a jump into the pool at the foot of the fall.

We’ll head back to basecamp on the same way back and take a refreshing bath.

Policy and Terms

Refund/cancellation policy  – weekend trips from bangalore, in the event that  you cancel your trek, this is the cancellation policy we follow:.

*Intimation Period means the number of days before the tour is scheduled to start **Cancellation Fee is the amount of money that will be deducted from the total billing amount before offering the refund. Refund/Cancellation requests are accepted only by email at [email protected]  and not via call or Whatsapp.

Cancellations on the day of departure or a day prior due to work/family emergencies, health issues, etc. would not be entertained, and no refund or transfer to further dates shall be allowed for the same. 

If you are wanting to cancel on the day of departure or a day prior to departure and move the trek to a future date an additional charge of RS 1500 would have to be incurred to make the movement to a future date. This can be availed only within 3 months from the date of the actual trip departure.

Additional charges would be deducted (based on where you booked) if you cancel the trek at any given date (along with the scenario described above), as payment gateway/event listing charges.

Transfer of Dates Policy

If you wish to shift your date of booking due to any unforeseen circumstances, the same should be intimated to us not less than 72 hours before the date of the event. (Not valid for group or corporate bookings)

Only one transfer per booking shall be permitted. Your booking shall stand canceled if you fail to join the event on the transferred dates.

Once the option of data transfer is made, the booking amount shall be held as credits with us, and in no case will a refund be made further on.

Transfer of Dates is not valid for Bhutan, Meghalaya, Himalayan Treks, Spiti or any other event worth above 5000/- INR.

For all the above choices, you can transfer your tickets to your friends. We would be more than happy to have them on board and you could save your hard-earned money.

Terms and Conditions

The purchase of any travel services offered by  PLAN THE UNPLANNED  (hereinafter referred as ‘PTU’) constitutes a contractual arrangement between PTU (‘First Party’) and Client (hereinafter referred as ‘You’) (‘Second Party’). Booking of services with PTU represents your  unconditional acceptance of the terms & conditions  set out herein. These terms and conditions shall be binding on you and all the travel companions booked by you.

Trekking and other outdoor activities provided by the PTU depend on various factors and have inherent risks associated with life. PTU does its best to reduce all types of risks, discomfort, and hazard to the best of its ability (within financial constraints), yet there are chances of accidents, mishaps, and deficiency in service.

Please ensure that you read carefully and understand these terms prior to confirming your booking.

Pictures used on the website and collateral are meant for marketing purposes. These do not imply the inclusion of the pictorial content to be a part of your vacation or any guarantee that you will experience, encounter or view whatever is depicted through the pictures.

Fitness Responsibility

PTU offers trip(s) and trek(s) that require varying levels of fitness. The level of difficulty can be based on the extent of physical stress, the terrain, weather, and/or climate. The degree of difficulty for some trips can be physically demanding. To enable you to choose appropriately and prepare accordingly, carefully review the level of difficulty of each trip before booking the same.

PTU doesn’t have any medical expert(s) and it is your responsibility to obtain medical advice, latest health requirements including inoculations and vaccines before you join a trip. PTU takes no responsibility for your inability to cope with the level of difficulty on a trip. While there is no age limitation on any PTU trips, any disability, pregnancy, mental or physical, or any other medical condition that may affect your fitness to complete the trek must be revealed at the time of booking the trip to PTU. You also undertake that you and Your travel companions, for whom You have signed up, do not suffer from any condition or disability that could create a hazard to Your own wellbeing or to others on a trip.

Program Dates

You are solely responsible for verifying the correct dates mentioned on the travel documents.

PTU reserves the right to modify or cancel the trip or part of the trip under circumstances, including but not limiting to Acts of God, road blockage, political unrest, sickness, accidents, events beyond PTU’s control etc. Any extra cost arising from such circumstances shall be borne by you on the spot. Wherever possible, PTU shall intimate you of such changes in advance or while on the trip.

Luggage Responsibility

Baggage and personal effects are at your risk throughout the trip. You are solely responsible for your personal belongings while on the trip. PTU is not responsible for the loss of baggage, goods, air tickets, passport, cash, traveler’s cheques, or any other travel document or item owned by you while on tour, whatever the cause.

On-trip Behaviour

You are required to behave in a manner that is acceptable and conducive to group travel. PTU reserves the right to terminate your trip (if you are found to be causing distress/annoyance to co-travelers, endanger/damage property of any supplier or of other traveling companions), without assigning any reason whatsoever. No refund for unused services is possible in such cases.

You also agree to abide by the authority of the group leader designated by PTU. The decision of the tour leader is binding on all participants on matters that affect the safety or well-being of any person participating in the trip. Behavior that causes danger, distress, or annoyance to others, or interferes with the mobility of the group can result in the group leader terminating your participation from the trip, with no right to refund for missed or unused services.

Protect The Environment

The entire trip/ trek would be through natural trails and we would spend most of the time in eerie forests, serene valleys, soothing hillsides, or at golden beaches. You should know that it’s your duty to protect the environment and not create nuisances on the way by throwing your plastic materials and other wastes like packets of chips or wrappers of chocolates. PTU shall not consider any such behavior towards nature. We expect you to be responsible and aware adults.

No Smoking Or Alcohol Consumption

PTU doesn’t support smoking or any sort of alcohol consumption during the journey and as a team, we earnestly request you to not indulge in those practices while you are with us. Smoking is not only injurious to your health but also equally bad for nature. We should ensure that there’s sustainable natural conservation and our acts, in no way, hampers that. Also, alcohol consumption might ruin your experience as well as cause discomfort to your fellow mates. No action of smoking or drinking shall be tolerated by PTU during the trip/trek.

PTU makes every effort to ensure the comfort of our guests, but PTU requests you to understand that the amenities around the trekking region may not be the same as the ones you are accustomed to, at home. Weather is another factor that will have a direct impact on your journey. Hence, you are requested to have patience, enthusiasm and be prepared for compromising, before you choose to undertake this journey.

You accept that the very nature of active, adventure travel requires a degree of personal risk. You are likely to visit places where political, cultural, and geographical attributes might pose certain risks, dangers, and physical challenges. By booking a tour with PTU, you accept that you are aware of the personal risks, dangers, and challenges that might arise and that you are aware of the risks involved. You hereby assume all such risk and release PTU from all claims and causes of action arising from such damages or injuries or death resulting from these inherent risks. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with customs, weather conditions, physical challenges, and laws in effect as well as your local embassy contacts in each destination.

Emergency Situations

In the event you fall ill or suffer an accident during the trip, all hospital expenses, doctor fees, repatriation expenses, evacuation from road or mountain, any other charges incurred as a direct or indirect result of your illness/accident are your responsibility.

Photography Rights

PTU reserves the right to take photographs of you during the trip and to use them for promotional purposes. By booking a trip with us, you automatically grant us a royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide, and irrevocable license for using your images in photographs and videos that may be used for promotional material, website, social media, collateral, and any other marketing and publicity materials.

Q: I have booked the trek when will I get further updates regarding the trek? A: Well, most of our treks are usually confirmed by Thursday and you would receive a EVENTS HEADSUP mail that would contain details as regards Pickup Points ( Location and Timings ), Outdoor Leader ( Point of Contact ), Do’s and Don’ts. You’ll be added to Whatsapp Group for all the further updates.

Q: Would I be added to a WhatsApp Group once the trek is confirmed? A: Yes, the Events heads mail would contain a link for Whatsapp Group through which one can join and interact with fellow travelers and outdoor leaders.

Q: I'm a solo traveller, Can I join? A: The interesting thing about travelling alone is that you get to meet new people from diverse backgrounds, and towards the end, you are no longer strangers. Q: Is it safe for Women/Girls? A: Safety and security are our priority at all times. Hence it is safe for women/girls to join us on our treks and travels. Our trek leaders accompany the team at all times, and our campsites are secured and safe for accommodation. We also have female trek leaders who accompany us on most of our treks.

Q: Do I have to carry luggage all the way during trekking? A: Not at all. You could keep all the extra luggage back at the campsite/homestay and carry only the necessary stuff for the trek (Raincoats, Torchlight, Waterbottle, lunchbox, and your valuable)

Q: Do you have Washrooms during the trek? A: Well, you are in the mountains and none of our trails have a washroom facility during the trek.

Q: Do I have any other boarding points apart from the ones mentioned? Q: I've never gone on a hike before, so can I do this one? A: The Doodhsagar trek is somewhat moderate and difficult. For those who live a sedentary lifestyle, the trip might be challenging. We encourage some preparation before tackling a hike for persons who live a very sedentary lifestyle.

Q: Is it necessary for me to hire a guide to trek Dudhsagar? A: Yes, you must hire a guide to trek Doodhsagar.

Q: What about the Dudhsagar trek's cellphone network and connectivity? A: There will be no cellphone connectivity for Airtel subscribers as soon as you reach Mollem town. Jio, BSNL, and Vodafone customers would get signals.

Q: Can we leave the luggage at the homestay? A: Yes, it is possible to leave your luggage at the homestay and carry the necessary things on your trek.

Q: Is the trail filled with leeches? A: Yes, you might encounter leeches along the trail.

Q: What is the best time to visit Dudhsagar falls? Due A: It is recommended to see Dudhsagar Falls just after the monsoon. During the rainy season, the waterfall will be closed to the public. As a result, individuals strive to find illegal methods to witness the waterfall while risking their lives.

Q: Is it possible to camp anywhere along the trail? A: No. Camping is allowed only at the Dudhsagar waterfall campsite.

Q: Is it possible to trek to Dudhsagar falls during the monsoon season? A: No, it is not possible to trek during the monsoon season.

Q: Are there restrooms at Dudhsagar falls? A: Yes, there are separate restrooms for men and women in the sanctuary. The restrooms are located on the approach to the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

Q: What about changing to dry clothes after going to the waterfalls? A: There is currently no room maid for both genders to change the linen. While males change on the spot, it is recommended that ladies change exclusively in the restrooms.

Dudhsagar trek

This board is at Kulem railway station. From both side i.e Castle rock(Karnataka) and Kulem(Goa) side its banned. From Castle rock side ban is followed strictly. Few trekkers still trekking from Kulem side using mud route  (To check their luck 🙂  ). you can find mud route details below.

How to reach from Bangalore :  

Train is best option to reach trek starting point. Train number 17311 (MAS VASCO EXP) is best option which runs on friday only.

Dudhsagar Trek Route Options :

Route -1: castle rock to dudhsagar route :.

• Castel Rock is last railway station from Karnataka side. 
• This is most popular trek route. Hence crowded in week ends 
• Tunel number-2 is longest tunnel on this route(Tunnel distance : 409 Mts)
•  You will cross Karnataka-Goa route.
•  Dudhsagar station comes 1KMS before Dudhsagar falls

Route -2:  Kulem to Dudhsagar route on track

• First station after crossing Karnataka- Goa border where train stops. 
• On this route you will get view of falls multiple times. You will see track bridge in front of Dudhsagar falls   

Route -3 : Kulem to Dudhsagar route on mud road

•     This trek route also starts from Kulem. 
•     On this route you required to trek first 4KMS on track
•     Then required to trek next 7KMS on wide mud road. 
•     Last stretch you required to do ascend for .5 KM, this trail will join tack again near to Dudhsagar falls

Trek Distance : 

• Castle rock – 13KMS – Dudhsagar station – 1KMS –  Dudhsagar falls Total distance : 14 KMS ( Of-course one side) 
•  Kulem route on trek -11 KMS
•  Kulem to Dudhsagar route on mud road: 12KMS  

Camping Sites:

You can camp near to  Dudhsagar station. Carrying tents is must if you want to stay back(only Sleeping bags may not be sufficient).

Food availability :

You wont get good food there, You will get only tea and snacks. Better to carry your food or Maggie   

Must Carry : 

• Torch: You must carry torch which is required very much while crossing tunnels
• Jerkin/Rain coat : If you are trekking in monsoon then its better carry raincoat as it rains heavily in this region
• Salt : Just after monsoon leeches will be there, Better to carry salt.

Dudhsagar Falls - An exhilarating rail trek in the picturesque Western Ghats

Usually the trips we do gets finalized at the last moment - making all the bookings a day or two before the trip. But, For this trip we just changed the usual way. This was a well-planned one. We had booked train tickets and stay almost a month in advance.

We boarded the train from Bangalore City station. We had our reservation in Rani Chennamma Express till Londa Junction. We reached Londa Junction at around 8:30 AM. We had breakfast at the station - Vada Pav and Idli Vada - were only things available there. Then, we bought General tickets and boarded Chennai Vasco Express at around 9:00 AM. We reached Castle Rock at around 10:00 AM.

We started our expedition From Castle Rock at around 10:30 AM. Weather was awesome - drizzling with cool breeze. View was awesome all the way - full of Jungles, Mountains, small and big waterfalls. The rail trek was an ultimate experience amidst the beautiful Western Ghats.

Dudhsagar Falls

The rail trek is full of stones from the start till the end, So my suggestion would be to wear a good trekking shoe if you are going for this trek. We reached Dudhsagar Waterfalls at around 4:00 PM. It's about 14 KM from Castle Rock to Dudhsagar, but you will never feel tired if the weather is good and It was good for us. After reaching to the waterfall you have to trek around a kilometre to reach the view-point.

We continued our trek even after the view-point instead of returning to Dudhsagar. We trekked till the Sonaulim Station and then boarded another train and reached Kulem . That's another interesting story how we boarded the train in Sonaulim. We had booking in Dudhsagar Spa Resort which is around 6 KM from Kulem. Then, we booked a cab from Kulem Station and reached there.

It's a nice place to stay. We stayed in tents. Tents were good & well maintained. Food was good, they had a dancing floor as well along with the bar/restaurant. Overall our stay was good at the resort. They had Spa and other activities as well but, with extra charges. We didn't had much time to check them out.

Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple

Next Day, we went to Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple, which is around 20 KMs from the Dudhsagar Spa Resort. We returned Bangalore in the same train which we boarded from Londa Junction at 8:00 PM.

We all enjoyed the trip and the rail trek was an awesome experience.

Dudhsagar Trek - A Four tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa on Goa's border with Karnataka. The waterfall is located in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wild Life Sanctuary at Collem in South Goa in the western ghats. is one of the world's most exquisite falls. It lies high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and so are not particularly spectacular during the dry season. During the monsoon season however, the falls are transformed into one of the most powerful falls in India. Dudhsagar Falls is listed as India's fifth tallest waterfall and is 227th in the world at 310 m.[1] The water plummets hundreds of metres (over a thousand feet) in large volumes during the rainy monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa. It is a major part of the Goa ecosystem. It is a four-tiered waterfall with a total height of 310 metres (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 metres (100 feet).  The area is surrounded by a deciduous forest and many species of birds, insects, plants and animal abound here.

IMPORTANT NOTE:   

• Participants are not allowed to carry any liquor purchased from Goa to Karnataka.
• There are chance of (1-2 hours) delay  in Arrival at Bangalore on Sunday night.
• Carry a raincoat. The weather is volatile and can change drastically on short notice.
• Torch is mandatory.
• Pack light. Carry only what is necessary.
