Starfield: How to Visit Your Parents

Gamers can visit their in-game parents in Starfield for some heartwarming conversation - here's where to find them.

The Starfield character creation menu is quite extensive. There are hundreds of appearance customization options and dozens of different traits at the player's disposal. The Kid Stuff trait might stand out for various gamers. Those who choose this trait will have two parents to constantly support them throughout the game and a home to visit at any time.

This guide will show players how they can visit their in-game parents, and it'll even help gamers who want to go back on their decision by telling them how they can get rid of the Kid Stuff trait in Starfield .

Kid Stuff Trait

Gamers can choose three traits when first creating their character in Starfield . If the player chooses the Kid Stuff trait, their character will live in a reality where their parents are alive and doing well. On top of this, they can also visit them and stay at their place whenever they'd like. On the other hand, they will have to send two percent of their credits back home every week .

This trait is perfect for players who don't mind losing a little money in order to be able to receive the support of two very wholesome people and get access to exclusive perks.

Family Apartments Location

visiting pioneer tower family apartments

Players can visit their parents at any time in Starfield . They live on Jemison, in the Alpha Centauri System, as they enjoy life in New Atlantis. The player's parents live in the Pioneer Tower in the Residential District . The district is quite small, so the tower is easy to spot - it's the large white building opposite Apollo Tower.

There is an elevator in the lobby that will take gamers up to the Family Apartments , where their in-game parents live. Players should check in on them from time to time to see what they're up to and how they've been doing. Dad might even let them in on a delicious family secret and show them how to make Grandpa's Meatloaf recipe .

How to Remove the Kid Stuff Trait

Gamers who regret choosing the Kid Stuff trait will be happy to hear that they don't have to take any drastic measures to get rid of it, and the parents are actually very understanding as well.

To remove the Kid Stuff trait, players must talk to their father in the Family Apartments and let him know that they can't keep sending money back home . Since living in New Atlantis is quite expensive, they won't be able to afford it anymore without the player's help and will have to move out.

Players might want to make a separate save file before removing this trait - just in case they change their minds later on.

Another prompt will appear to ensure that the player is set on their decision, and if confirmed, the Kid Stuff trait will be immediately removed. In a few days, the parents will move away, and gamers will no longer be able to visit their apartment.

Starfield is now available for PC and Xbox Series X/S.

Starfield Kid Stuff Trait Explained: How to Visit Your Parents & All Rewards

Post Cover Image

One of the most interesting Traits in Starfield is Kid Stuff, a bonus that allows your parents to be alive and well on New Atlantis. But is it worth the cost of sending Credits home each week?

When you’re creating your custom character, it can be tempting to choose a Trait to boost your stats. But the heart of Starfield lies with its characters, so why not try Kid Stuff and visit your parents?

Well, there’s certainly one drawback: having parents means you’re obligated to send 2% of your total Credits to them each week! But do the pros outweigh the cons?

What Does Kid Stuff Trait Do in Starfield?

The Kid Stuff Trait makes it so that your Starfield character has actual parents to visit , who live in an apartment in New Atlantis. However, it also requires you to send 2% of your total Credits to support them each in-game week (maximum of 500 per week).

It appears that the amount you send your parents each week caps out at 500 Credits. Therefore, if you have over 25,000 Credits, you’ll still only give them 500 a week!

Now that might seem like a steep trade-off just to have a couple of NPCs exist in-game, but it’s worth mentioning that your parents are lovely people who just want what’s best for you.

Your Mom in Starfield

And if you’re sick of paying their upkeep, you can also kick your parents to the curb, which we’ll get into below. But you’ll miss out on some excellent rewards for doing so.

Fun fact: Your parents are actually generated based on what your own character looks like. If you notice the parents in this article looking different from your own versions, it’s because our custom characters don’t look alike!

Your Dad in Starfield

Where to Find Your Parents in Starfield – Kid Stuff Trait

To find your parents in Starfield, you must have the Kid Stuff Trait , which is only attainable during character creation.

Then, head to Pioneer Tower, directly outside the Residential District NAT Stop on New Atlantis and you’ll find Mom and Dad’s apartment waiting for you after using the elevator.

Pioneer Tower in Starfield

As for how early you can begin visiting them, after completing the mission ‘One Small Step’ and officially joining Constellation, you’ll notice a new mission appear under Activities telling you to ‘See Your Parents At Pioneer Tower.’

If you take too long, you’ll even receive a letter from your Dad at The Lodge, AKA Constellation HQ.

All Rewards for Kid Stuff Trait in Starfield

If having living parents to visit wasn’t enough for you, here are all the other perks you get for having the Kid Stuff Trait in Starfield:

  • An apartment full of items to take and space to leave behind your possessions.

  • Gran-Gran’s Spacesuit and Helmet

  • The Wanderwell Ship

You’ll get these rewards periodically from your parents simply for coming to talk to them. Occasionally they’ll send notes via your fellow Constellation members, asking you to come and visit as they’ve got something for you.

But in return, don’t forget that you’ll automatically send your parents 2% of all your Credits each week. However, as we mentioned above, this appears to cap out at a maximum of 500 Credits, so don’t worry about it costing too much.

How to Remove Kid Stuff Trait in Starfield

To remove the Kid Stuff Trait in Starfield and stop paying your parents each week, simply talk to your Dad and select :

  • [Remove Kid Stuff trait] I’m not sure if I can keep sending money back home.

Then, choose:

  • [Remove Kid Stuff permanently] I just can’t afford it any more.

Doing so will cause your parents to have to move out of New Atlantis to more affordable housing. They are, after all, both retired and only manage to pay the rent here with the money you send home.

You won’t be able to visit your parents any longer, meaning that all gifts you’re yet to receive from them are forfeit. And there’s no way to get the Kid Stuff Trait back once it’s gone either.

But don’t worry, they still love you, and they are very understanding about your decision.

Is Kid Stuff Trait Worth it in Starfield?

Yes, the Kid Stuff Trait is absolutely worth taking in Starfield. Not only are your parents fun to visit, but they’ll even give you a variety of items including a brand-new ship!

On top of that, you won’t ever pay more than 500 Credits a week to them (something the game doesn’t tell you). And you’ll also run into Mom and Dad out in the wild too – they don’t just stick around the apartment all the time.

We’ve even run into them in the seedy nightclub, the Astral Lounge, on Neon. They were extremely embarrassed to be caught there.

Looking for your Starfield parents location? In Bethesda Studios’ new space-faring RPG, you can choose to give your character parents visitable NPCs you can interact with for that additional bit of roleplaying. But where are they?

Here, we’re going to walk you through your Starfield parents location, how to find them, and what they can do. This won’t have all the fun or complexity of New Atlantis side quests like Distilling Confidence or Alternating Currents , but the flavour worldbuilding you experience from this slice-of-life feature is nonetheless rewarding.

Starfield parents location: Player speaks to in-game Mom NPC.

Where to find your parents in Starfield

You can find your parents in Starfield on the planet Jemison, in the city of New Atlantis. Follow our steps below for a more direct route.

  • Head to the Residential District in New Atlantis. You can reach it from the NAT transportation network if you haven’t been there yet.
  • Go to Pioneer Tower, which you’ll be able to spot to the left of the NAT station as you disembark.
  • Take the elevator up to Family Apartments.
  • Your parents will be in the first room on this level.

Keep in mind though that in order to meet them, you need to make sure you pick up the ‘Kid Stuff’ Starfield trait during the character creator . If you fail to select this during character creation, there’s unfortunately no way to unlock the trait without starting a new run of the game.

Note that you’ll sometimes run into them elsewhere though. From time to time, your parents can and will pop up in random locations, such as the Constellation faction Headquarters, or even the pleasure city of Neon .

Starfield parents location: Player speaks to in-game Dad NPC.

What can you do with your parents in Starfield?

Your parents act as a friendly presence in Starfield, often appearing on their own accord to cheer you on. You can hold conversations with them both, visit their pretty luxurious apartment for refreshment and relaxation, and even receive gifts for them. These gifts tend to be unique items or objects, often rewarded upon reaching milestones or progressing in the main Starfield story . They’ll also leave notes to your Constellation companions when they want to meet you again.

After finishing the first couple of main story adventures “One Small step” and the “Old Neighborhood” follow-up mission, Noel will inform you about the first of these notes when you return to the Lodge, left by your Dad. This will then assign an Activity to go and visit them. You can always track this Activity if you’re still getting lost. Doing so will provide a waypoint to their location.

Kid Stuff Starfield trait explained

As we mentioned, you’ll need to pick up the Kid Stuff Starfield trait when creating your character in order for you to meet your parents in-game. This trait will send 10% of all the Starfield credits you earn each month to your parents, but in return you’ll be able to visit and interact with them. 10% isn’t a massive deduction, but it’s really up to you whether or not you’ll find the unique interactions you get as a result worth the payment.

That covers everything you should need to know about your Starfield parents location, as well as what they can offer you in-game. Keep in mind that their place doesn’t act as a true residence for you as well. If you want somewhere to call your own and stash all your Starfield weapons and armor , consider establishing an outpost somewhere.

Is the Starfield Kid Stuff trait worth it?

It’s up to players whether or not the Kid Stuff trait is worth it, but the interactions it offers with your parents add some interesting flavour.

Are your Starfield parents always the same NPCs?

Your parents in Starfield are always the same NPCs, and there will be no effect on their appearances based on any choices you make during character creation.

Starfield: How To Find And Meet Your Parents [Location]

The Starfield Parents Location guide will showcase the Kid Stuff location and if your parents are missing or not in the home or apartment.

The Ultimate Starfield Parents Location

Starfield allows players to explore planets upon planets, explore the universe, and embark on a tremendous journey, but often, returning to your parents is all you need. Players might want to know the Starfield Parents Location , therefore a detailed walkthrough of where you can find them, and get your hands on the traits it offers too!

  • Your parents will be your Mom and Dad, and players will be able to meet them.
  • The  Kid Stuff trait lets players visit their apartment and send them 2% of their credit weekly.
  • Locate Parents: Head to Alpha Centauri, take the NAT Transit car to the Residential District and find Pioneer Towers.
  • Conversations: Engage in discussions with your parents about relationships, their roles at Constellation, and more.
  • Optional Action: Remove the Kid Stuff trait by talking to your dad to potentially change your living situation.

Overview Of Your Parents In Starfield

Your Parents

One of the first things that players might want to know in my opinion is their Starfield Parent’s Location , but before doing so, I suggest another thing that you will want to see is whether you are even able to visit them or not.

At the start, you will be able to choose a total of three traits, which, I recommend choosing the Kid Stuff trait, as it will ensure that your parents stay alive and well.

In doing so, you will also be granted the ability to visit your parents at home, but the downside I discovered is that you will need to send 2% of your total credits to Starfield Parents Not Home every week.

Parents’ House Location

Jemison

To locate your parents’ house in Starfield, follow the steps I’ve provided below:

Gravity Jump

  • Clearance for Landing : After the scan is completed and no contraband is found on your ship, you will receive clearance for landing on Alpha Centauri.
  • Exit Your Ship : You can now exit your ship. Head towards the terminal and proceed past the notices to visitors and the arrivals boards displayed on the walls.

Transit Car

Meeting The Parents

Mom

Once you reach their house and find the Starfield Parent’s Location , the next thing to do is interact with them. Head closer to the dad and start talking to him; he will seem extremely surprised to see you here.

  • After he  informs the mother that you have appeared, he tells you that he is thrilled to see you, but then he asks if you are under contract with Argos Extractors .

Catching Up

After catching up with them, I recommend you take a short walk around the home to live out some memories again and knowing that you don’t have to deal with Starfield Parents Not In Apartment and being able to interact with them should help relieve the memories.

From here, you can either choose to say no or yes to the relationship question, and after that, you can ask your parents what they have been up to and what you have been Starfield Parents Missing out on.

Kick Parents Out Of Apartment

Kicking Parents Out

Now, a rather mean thing you can try doing to get rid of the Starfield Parents Kid Stuff Location Trait  is to have them kicked out of the apartment.

  • While talking to your dad, he will ask you if you want to talk about anything, and there will be a  fourth option .
  • The fourth option will discuss removing the Kid Stuff Best Trait and the message that you can no longer send money back home.
  • Your dad does not seem to have a negative reaction to your news, and he tells you that they will move out of the apartment.

After this, your dad asks you to say goodbye to your mother, as they will need to start finding new places immediately.

And that’s just about it! All that players need to know about the Parents Location guide! While interacting with the Parents in Starfield , why not read the Starfield Overdesigned Mission guide? Alongside that, the How To Wait In Starfield guide is a must-read!

With that, the Starfield Store Items On Ship guide is one that you shouldn’t miss out on! Lastly, make sure that you read up on the Starfield Best Faction guide!

How to meet your parents with the Kid Stuff Trait in Starfield

Image of Joey Carr

One of the more intriguing Traits that you can pick up during the character creator portion of Starfield is called “Kid Stuff.” This Trait actually gives you a father and a mother that you can visit at any time during your grand space journey.

The caveat with having parents is that you need to send them 2 percent of all credits you make every single week that you’re alive. I found this to not make a lot of sense, and you’ll see why once you learn where your parents are living. In any case, if you want to go and visit your parents, you will have to wait to do so until you’re around a few hours into the game. Then, you can follow a quest to meet Mom and Dad.

In the guide below, I’ll explain these steps more in-depth so you know exactly how to visit your parents anytime you want in Starfield .

How to visit your parents in Starfield

For starters, if you’re already past the character creator and you did not select the Kid Stuff Trait , it appears that there is no way to change that decision. I have not come across any method to add a new Trait once you’re done with the character creator. This means if you don’t have Kid Stuff, you will likely never be able to see your parents.

The Kid Stuff Trait screen in Starfield

If you did select Kid Stuff, then all you have to do is wait until you complete the Old Neighborhood mission for Constellation . More specifically, you need to make it back to The Lodge, which is the headquarters of Constellation in New Atlantis on Jemison. At The Lodge, speak to Noel, the scientist who has been studying the Artifacts. She will give you a “Note from Dad,” which you can read from the “Notes” tab in your inventory.

Reading the note will start a new quest in the Activities tab of your mission log. Here, you find out your parents are in Pioneer Tower , which is an apartment complex in the Residential District of New Atlantis.

The outside of Pioneer Tower in New Atlantis

To get there, ride the New Atlantis Train (NAT) to the Residential District and then follow the quest marker to reach Pioneer Tower. The building is right in front of a few large trees. You can enter the elevator to reach the “Family Apartments” level of the building and then walk toward your parents’ apartment.

Upon entering the apartment, you will be greeted by both your mom and dad and you can tell them about your new position as a member of Constellation and what you’ve been up to since you last saw them. Some additional conversation topics are also available.

Is the Kid Stuff Trait worth it in Starfield ?

Unless you’re dead set on having parents in Starfield , then I would recommend staying away from this Trait. While it’s not inherently bad, sending 2 percent of your credits every week can really add up over time, especially as you accrue credits and are trying to buy something like a new ship.

Related: Should you join the United Colonies (UC) in Starfield ?

The one upside to having parents is they will send you gifts from time to time. One of the gifts is called Sir Livingstone’s Pistol , which your parents give you after you successfully pay them for the first time. This is a unique pistol that I don’t believe you can get from anywhere else in Starfield . Your parents will also send you other weapons and armor at various times.

Lastly, you will be able to randomly encounter your parents in a few different locations across the galaxy, so it does add a layer of content to your journey. Still, I don’t think it’s worth sending them thousands of credits over your playthrough.

Starfield: How To Visit Your Parents With Kid Stuff Trait

Do you finally want to visit your parents in Starfield? Then this guide is for you.

' src=

In Starfield, you can visit your parents when you enable the Kid Stuff trait. The trait is unique in its own way and has many other benefits besides this one. The description for it is – ” Your parents are alive and well, and you can visit them at their home. But you will automatically send 2% of your credits home to them every week.” Here’s how to find the location of parents in the game.

How to Visit Your Parents in Starfield (Location)

meet your parents starfield

  • Go to the Constellation Lodge after you have chosen the Kid   Stuff from the Traits category. This can be done while selecting your character and its attributes.
  • Next, complete One Small Step and The Old Neighborhood missions.
  • When you are in New Atlantis, you will then receive a Note from your father, asking you to visit them.
  • The location to visit parents in Starfield is the Pioneer Tower in the Residential District in New Atlantis (Planet Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system) . As soon as you reach their residential location you can then, select the kind of relationship you want to build or have with your parents.

Your parents will praise you and give you gifts based on the responses you select. Another fun fact is that your parents are going to look just like you, only an older version of your character.

Then, you will come to the part where you have to discuss shelling out two percent of your credits to your parents because their pension isn’t enough. There is a way to not abide by it, but that will require you to lose your parents in the game. They will move away when you disable this trait or choose another trait. This is why you must rethink whether you want the Kid Stuff trait as a part of your character story.

This was all about meeting or visiting your parents in the game. You can check out more of our guides on Starfield like how to mine Helium or how to take off Spacesuit .

Starfield Kid Stuff Trait Explained: How to Visit Parents

Image of Zhiqing Wan

There are quite a few traits to choose from in Starfield, and they all come with some sort of downside or disadvantage. Because of that, it’s important for you to know just what you’re getting into before committing. Here’s everything you need to know about the Kid Stuff trait in Starfield .

How the Kid Stuff Trait Works in Starfield

It’s pretty self-explanatory, but the main thing you need to know about Starfield ‘s Kid Stuff trait is that each week, you’ll automatically send home 2% of your total Credits . This is one of the traits we recommend going with, simply because 2% isn’t a lot of money, plus you get some fringe benefits from picking this one.

How to Get Sir Livingstone’s Pistol

For starters, you’ll gain access to Sir Livingstone’s Pistol when you visit your parent’s house on Jemison, as pictured below:

sir livingstone's pistol in Starfield

It may not be the best weapon in the game by any means, but ammo for it is easy to come by, and also pretty cheap to purchase from vendors. In addition to that, it’s also one of the better weapons in the early game.

In addition to that, you’ll also get to visit your parents in Jemison. They don’t really provide any tangible gameplay benefits, but it’s nice to check in with them every once in a while, and they help to flesh out your story and character, while also keeping you apprised of what’s going on in town.

Where to Find Your Parents in Jemison

To find your parents, take the NAT to the Residential District, then turn right to find the Pioneer Tower.

visit your parents starfield

Head into the elevator and go up to the family apartments, then turn left and enter the first door you see.

Here, you’ll get to talk to both your parents while also taking anything you may need from the apartment.

visit your parents starfield

It’s worth noting that it is possible to remove the Kid Stuff trait by talking to your dad as well. You can tell him that you don’t think you’ll be able to keep sending money home, and this will allow you to keep that extra 2% with no visible downsides.

That’s all you need to know about how the Kid Stuff trait works in Starfield . Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more tips and information on the game.

How To Visit Your Parents With The Kid Stuff Trait In Starfield

If you want to meet your parents in Starfield, choose the Kid Stuff trait during character creation.

Visit Your Parents with the Kid Stuff Trait in Starfield

It turns out your Starfield character’s parents are alive, and Starfield allows you to meet them at any time. But visiting your Parents is only possible if you choose the Kid Stuff Trait in Starfield.

I will cover everything about seeing your parents with this trait. This will also include your parent’s locations and what they can offer you in Starfield.

How the Kid Stuff Trait works in Starfield

The Kid Stuff is one of the traits, and you can select it during character creation . This trait will allow you to visit your parents in Starfield. You can have a wholesome, warm chat with your parents, which many players find very pleasant.

After selecting this trait, you have to play the game until you are tasked to arrive and join the Constellation . But before you do so, you will get a quest from Noel. This quest requires you to visit your parents.

You can also stay at your parent’s apartment in your room, which you can use as storage. The only drawback of having your parents around with the Kid Stuff trait in Starfield is that you have to pay them 2% of the credits every in-game week.

This is because your parents live in New Atlantis , and the rent there is insane, which will help them stay under the roof.

Parents House location in Pioneer Tower

Your parents live in the New Atlantis so you have to travel there. After you land there, take the metro and transit to the Residential District .

Pioneer Tower Indicator in Starfield

At the Residential District, you will see a board that will indicate the direction of Pioneer Tower. Use the elevator to reach the family apartment. After that, head to the apartment door, and you will meet your parents in Starfield.

After some warm chit-chat, your parents will reveal that the rent in New Atlantis is insane, and their combined pension is still insufficient to afford to live. Your parents will ask you to send them 2% of your credits weekly.

One thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter if you have 100 or a million credits; you will automatically send 2% of your credits weekly. But your parents are alive, and you can meet them anytime to relax so you don’t need to be materialistic here.

If you still want to keep your money, you can choose the Remove Kid’s Stuff Trait option from the dialogues, and it will stop sending credits to your parents. Be advised this is a permanent decision, and you cannot undo it once it is removed.

Your parents in Starfield will move out of New Atlantis, and you will never meet them again.

All encounters with your parents

Aside from the apartment, you will encounter your parents at two more locations in the later game. One encounter will be at the Astral Lounge club at Neon. The other encounter will be at the Akila Petting Zoo , where they will check one of their retirement adventure bucket list.

What you can get from your Parents in Starfield

Aside from the apartment space and love, there are certain items and gear that your parents will give you as a gift.

Sir Livingstone’s Pistol

In the Lodge, Your parents will present Sir Livingstone’s Pistol, a high-velocity weapon with 31 damage and an extended magazine. You can get this after you have sent your parent in Starfield their first payment since you met them.

Gran-Gran’s Spacesuit and Helmet

After five missions in Starfield, Noel will give you a note from your Mom. You have to meet her at the Pioneer Tower Lodge. Your Mom will provide you with the Gran-Gran’s Spacesuit and Helmet.

Wanderwall is a Spaceship that your dad will gift you after he has won a big poker game. You can get this after six missions in which Noel will give you a note from your Parents asking you to meet them at Pioneer Tower in Starfield.

How To Remove Kid Stuff Trait

For players who feel the pinch of sending credits home or those who want to change their gameplay strategy, Starfield offers a way out. By having a conversation with your dad, you can express your inability to continue sending money. Doing so will remove the “Kid Stuff” trait, allowing you to retain that extra 2% of your credits.

How To Visit Your Parents In Starfield (Family Apartments Location)

First things first, you’ll need to make your way to New Atlantis. It’s one of the major cities in Starfield, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble locating it on your star map. Once you’ve landed, head to the Residential District of New Atlantis. This area is a bit quieter than the bustling commercial zones, offering a more homely atmosphere.

Your parents reside in the Pioneer Tower Apartment complex. It’s a noticeable building with a distinct architecture that stands out from the surrounding structures. As you approach, you might even recognize some familiar sights from your character’s childhood.

Note : You must select the Kid Stuff trait during character creation to be able to visit your parents .

These encounters not only add depth to the narrative but also provide players with a sense of continuity and connection to the protagonist’s personal life.

1. Astral Lounge Club at Neon: In a surprising twist, you’ll find your parents enjoying themselves at the Astral Lounge club located in Neon. It’s not every day you see your folks in such a lively setting, and this encounter offers a unique dialogue exchange, shedding light on their life outside the confines of the family home.

You’ll cross paths with them at the Akila Petting Zoo, where they’re ticking off an item from their retirement adventure bucket list. Starfield: How To Make The Most Out Of The Kid Stuff Trait

Quick links, about kid stuff trait, making the most out of the kid stuff trait.

From physical features and personality, to backstory and skills, the customization in Starfield is out of this world, pun intended. You're given the ability to practically create the character of your dreams with minimal limitations . The traits option, however, stands out the most.

RELATED: Starfield: Best Physical Build

You are given 17 traits to choose from, one of which being Kid Stuff. At first glance, this may not seem to be much, however, emotionally it adds a lot to your gameplay and overall story. Each trait has positives and negatives, but the negatives for this one are insignificant .

Basically, the description tells you that you're going to send 2% of your credits home to your parents , who are well and alive, on a weekly basis. You don't realize the depth of this until you actually select it.

While every trait is unique in their own way, this one stands out among the others. You're out there, skipping from system to system with no real attachments. You may have your significant other, if you chose to have one. At first, you enjoy the freedom. However, from time to time, you may miss having a genuine connection or family . It feels as if you're lacking something. Maybe something is missing from your character and their place in the universe. After all, sometimes feeling grounded or connected is a good thing.

If you chose this trait, it adds depth to your character. You can literally go home whenever you want and stay in your old room. When you choose the trait, it will tell you where your parents will be located. They should be in New Atlantis at the Pioneer Tower in the Residential area . You can take the elevator up to the family apartment, and it will be the first door on your right.

The game even generates parents that look similar to you, adding to the immersion into the game. Not only that, but your parents will send you 3 major presents once you've sent a certain amount of credits.

They are also constantly showing their gratitude towards you giving them 2% of your credits weekly. To add to the realism. You can even observe your parents bickering occasionally, as most people do when they've been married for so long.

RELATED: Starfield: Best Side Quests, Ranked

To make the most out of this trait, actually visit your parents . Don't let them be these invisible entities that you're sending money to weekly and receiving gifts from. Actually interact with them and build the nostalgia from your "past" in the game.

Is This Trait Worth It?

Absolutely this trait is worth it. Not only do you get to have your parents alive, you can also live with them . It adds to your backstory and builds the realism of the game. Not to mention the 3 major gifts you're given by your parents. However, if you really feel it's not for you, you can always tell your father you won't be sending any more credits, ultimately removing the trait . If you want to know more about the three gifts, they are as follows:

  • Sir Livingstone's Pistol : Classic 1911 Pistol given to you from your father
  • Gran-Gran's Spacesuit : This spacesuit is from your mother and is surprisingly well-built with a PHYS of 108, ENGY 92, EM 100. Complete with a sensor array to detect enemies. It also comes with a helmet. You'll receive it only after a couple of hundred dollars that you send to your parents.
  • The Wonderwell Spaceship : That's right, they actually gift you a whole spaceship. It has a huge grav drive, a lot of engines, though not as much firepower as other ships like the Razorleaf. It's a lot roomier than other ships, and is essentially considered a spaceship minivan.

How Starfield Filled Its Galaxy with Alien Life

Carl Sagan once said, “Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.” That imagination of what exploring the universe might be like in the future is one of those driving forces behind Starfield , a massive role-playing game where we can visit distant worlds, hit up any number of settlements and, along the way, encounter some truly wild alien life.

From long-necked Cagebrains to adorable Milliwhales to arachnid-like Vuvuzelisks, we’ve come across some extraordinary creatures during our travels throughout Starfield’s vast universe – not to mention those ferocious Terrormorphs.

But how do you go about building an entire galactic ecosystem? That’s a question we wanted to ask the development team responsible for crafting those unique alien creatures, and the logic behind their placement across the galaxy. But to know where life begins, one needs to start at the source and that’s the generation of planets throughout the game’s universe — what are Starfield’s “rules of life?”

Building Planets

“The original rules for planet generation were put together and used to create a massive spreadsheet of all the stars and planets in the game,” explains Senior System Designer Sam Combs. “Data like the distance of planets from the star, the type of atmosphere and magnetosphere, the size of the planet, the presence of water, and the biomes and traits on the planet, [all] determined the likelihood of flora and fauna being found there.”

visit your parents starfield

In the real world, we don’t really know what’s out there in the blackness of space – it’s possible that life is rare; very rare. But that doesn’t make for such an exciting gaming experience. To solve for this, and to ensure players could have fun and interesting encounters with alien life in Starfield , the team worked to have at least one planet with life for every solar system that housed more than a few planets.

“Although not scientific in its distribution, this does at least mirror the only solar system any of us have experience with,” explains Lead Character Artist Ben Carnow. “I do not believe that a true unifying theory for life distribution is a thing that we really touched on in Starfield . I think, as in real life, the origins of life in Starfield are intended to be mysterious. I have always found the theory of Panspermia intriguing, that the building blocks of life (bacteria etc.) are present in many places and have been spread over billions of years by things like comets or other interstellar cataclysms.”

“Creatures are cool, and we wanted lots of them,” Lead Tech Artist Felipe Nogueira shares. “Leadership had an idea of what percentage of planets would need life, and we went from there. In the end, we ended up with upwards of 200 different creature meshes split amongst the different archetypes.”

Finding Balance with Nature

After deciding where alien creatures would live, the team set about finding a way to balance the population difference on these planets. You don’t necessarily want a planet completely crawling with life, but you don’t want it to feel impossible to find these alien creatures either. Combs says that this took some trial and error, resulting in some loose guidelines for how many different types of creatures per planet based on a “calculated abundance.” This broke down to essentially one to three species on primordial planets, and up to ten or more on planets with abundant life.

visit your parents starfield

Some planets also feature multiple biomes to explore, which further complicated things. “We also had to consider which biomes they appeared in – if a creature only appeared in one, less common biome, they would be much harder to find and scan than if they appeared in multiple biomes,” explains Combs. “Having a manageable number of creatures that the player was required to find to complete a planet survey was a consideration. The density of creatures spawned is also controlled by the biome – some have higher density where it makes sense.”

I was curious to know if that placement was based on a lifeform’s evolution trajectory, because by the time we meet these creatures in the game, they’ve already reached their phase of surviving and thriving in a particular hospitable environment.

“We had an amazing variety of creatures created by our artists to choose from — there was not a specific system that determined how creatures evolved,” says Combs. “When placing creatures, there was thought put into which creatures made the most sense for which world: hard armored crabs might make sense for harsh, marshy worlds, for example. A big part of the process was if the creature looked right on a certain planet — ‘does this look like something that would thrive in the savannas of Akila?’ But they are also alien worlds, so sometimes you want a creature that looks alien.”

Piecing it Together

Creating all the creatures in Starfield required a significant amount of thought and effort from the development team. Nogueira shares that, during concepting, they produced dozens of silhouettes to create a diverse pool of alien creatures. Each of these concepts were grounded in realism by studying real creatures from our planet, while taking note of how diverse our own ecosystem is.

visit your parents starfield

“Our next step was to identify archetypes from our visual exploration,” Nogueira details. “Our goal was to select the best variety of body types to fill specific roles in our substantial number of planets and biomes. This led to us selecting setups such as quadrupeds, octopedes, hexapods, flying and floating creatures, and many others. In the end, we created 15 base archetypes to build from.”

Combs shared that the creatures were split into rigs — the shared skeletons and animations that unique skins are built on top of to give the creatures their distinctive appearance. Most of those skins also have different variants to suit the biomes they are found in. What was impressive to learn was that artists concepted and handcrafted each of the creatures — there is no swapping of body parts, meaning everything you find while on your explorations has been designed specifically.

“We considered creating a library of creature parts that could be mixed and matched to produce a variety of life early on in Starfield production,” Carnow explained. “However, we discarded the idea because it could not produce the fidelity of creatures we wanted. A mix and match system can produce some cool and unexpected results, but it tends to work better in more stylized games. So, every one of the close to 200 creatures in Starfield was built as a unique piece of art, and nothing is piecemeal.”

Let Them Fight

With the “rules of life” in place, it was then a matter of creating the behavior of these creatures. How would they respond to a human encroaching on their territory? What would they do with other creatures around? Would they be territorial? These were all considerations the team was contending with when planting these creatures throughout Starfield ’s galaxy.

visit your parents starfield

“ We have different behavior sets, combat styles, and attack and defense mods we assign to each creature. The biggest difference is between predators and prey,” Combs shares. “The body type and visuals were helpful for determining which creature behaviors to assign. For example, an aggressive-looking spider with fangs would make more sense visually as a predator, while a more docile pig-like creature would make more sense as prey. Larger creatures were made tougher, and if they looked like they had natural armor, there was a better chance of them being assigned a higher damage resistance.”

The animators made sure that every one of their rigs could support any potential creature behavior. They wanted to make sure that the behavior of life in each world was surprising, so they worked to avoid in-game behaviors being driven solely by it.

“If every biped the player encounters is an aggressive predator, and every quadruped is a foraging herbivore, it shrinks the player’s expectations and makes the worlds less interesting to explore,” Carnow shares. “We tried to determine the behavior of each creature based on the look of its anatomical structure. There is a lot of wiggle room however, as we did not want everything with pointy teeth to be a predator for example. Nature should be surprising.”

How fauna would respond to the player is also part of that aspect of keeping nature surprising in the game, but also how to determine their difficulty during these encounters when paired with the type of planet they were found on.

visit your parents starfield

“The level of the planet is the main factor in determining difficulty,” explains Combs. “The strength of the creatures can also be adjusted with a challenge rating with a range from Very Easy to Very Hard, that bumps the level of the creature above or below the default level by varying degrees. This lets us vary the difficulty of the creatures encountered, allowing for easier prey and tougher predators. The creatures can also be given certain abilities that give them better damage resistance or ranged attacks that can make them stronger.”

Rising to the Challenge

Combs shared that determining combat behavior was challenging, and took the most time and effort from programmers, animators, artists, and sound designers to make everything feel right. In addition to working with level and quest designers to get the creatures doing what they wanted in their spaces and quests, it became one of the most difficult jobs in adding alien life in the game.

“The immense number of creatures was the largest challenge from the design side, more so than any individual creature,” Combs explains. “Getting them distributed among the planets in a way that made sense, and modular enough that they could be assigned different behaviors on different planets without seeming too similar, was a challenge. The Terrormorph was one of the most complex that got the most screentime, and required a team of artists, animators, programmers, and designers to get the unique behaviors working.”

“Designing flying creatures that feel believable and look alien was (also) a challenge for us,” says Nogueira. “The main difficulty was to make them look different from each other while having to incorporate specific features such as wings, which from a distance can make them all appear the same.”

visit your parents starfield

“We created interesting, engaging, and visually impressive fauna on hundreds of worlds that interact with the player and each other in interesting ways,” says Combs. “I would say we got close to what we wanted. There is always more you wish you could do – I still wish you could tame the creatures and build a zoo or have a pet Ashta follow you around, for example.”

As players, we may take for granted just how much goes into being able to explore and interact with a video game universe that is teeming with life — games themselves feel like tiny miracles as it is. Knowing now the incredible level of care and attention to detail that went into creating these planets, and hand placing each of the alien creatures we discover, has made the entire experience of planet hopping in Starfield that much more enticing to continue.

The implementation of broad game development ideas like, “creatures are cool, and we want lots of them,” as Nogueira shared earlier, is quite the star to reach for. Nonetheless, it has been remarkable to learn about the team’s dedication to their work and the passion that went into crafting and populating Starfield ’s many alien worlds. Paraphrasing Carl Sagan, we have been carried across these worlds by this team’s imagination.

Starfield is available to play today on Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and with Game Pass.
