Whale Watching

Just past the Cliff House lies our coastal grasslands extending to the Pacific Ocean. The Coastal Bluff Trail leads you along the edges of this sensitive prairie where whales and other marine mammals can be spotted throughout the year.

The spring migration of the California Gray Whale has these marine mammals putting on quite a show from the bluffs of the Gardens over the past couple of weeks. You can spot them spouting, spy-hopping, and lob-tailing from our bluffs. A group of lucky visitors even reported seeing a gray whale breaching... a rare sight indeed!

California Gray Whales : November - May From November to February, the California Gray Whales can be seen migrating south to Baja. There, the pregnant females give birth. Starting in February and March, the whales migrate back north to Alaska with their newborn calves.

Humpback Whales : April - November Humpback Whales spend most of their time further offshore than the Gray Whale but can be seen fluking, spy-hopping, and breaching!

Blue Whales : June - October Occasionally seen from the shore in summer and early fall, these gentle giants produce a tall spout.

Orcas (Killer Whales) : In recent years, these beautiful predators have been spotted off the Mendocino Coast. Unlike other whales, Orcas are not considered to be predictable migrants.

Laguna Point is an easily accessible wildlife viewing platform. After parking at Laguna Point parking lot follow the level wheelchair accessible boardwalk 1/3 of a mile to the viewing platform where the shore and waters are abundant with marine life. Visit the MacKerricher State Park visitor center to learn more about our coastline.

Laguna Point is a haul out and rookery site for the harbor seal. Occasional Ca. sea lions and Stellar sea lions can also be seen. River otters can be seen in nearby Lake Cleone as well as in the ocean. The gray whale migration can be seen December through May. Humpback whales and blue whales are often seen in the summer as well as numerous dolphins and occasionally, young elephant seals arrive in search of food and to molt. After parking at Laguna Point parking lot, follow the wheelchair accessible boardwalk 1/3 of a mile out to the Laguna Point viewing platform.

Whale Festival takes place the third weekend in March. The festival celebrates the protest and success of the end of whaling along the California coastline. Wildlife and Birdwatching on The Mendocino Coast

From wave-battered headlands and quiet tidepools & estuaries to specatcular redwood forests and valleys, California’s world-famous scenery is a haven for wildlife. The diversity of habitats and wildlife species here are the greatest in the United States.

California WHALES are among the most spectacular natural wonders of Northern California. In March of every year, The Fort Bragg and Mendocino Whale Festivals offer Whale Watching Charters which are enjoyed by many coastal visitors and locals alike. These spectacular Charters are available year-round, and are offered by sea and by air.

California SEA OTTERS can be seen at many locations throughout the coast. This cute, furry, charismatic species, once hunted to near extinction, is now protected and flourishes in pacific waters.

Families of HARBOR SEALS can be seen just offshore, lounging on rocks and sunning themselves in large lumbering groups. Once described as “fins out, belly up and having too much of a good time,” these photogenic creatures are ever a delight to inquisitive groups of coastal visitors. Harbor seals can be seen, of course, at North and South Noyo Harbor, as well as from most other shore locations.

During peak annual migration periods, hundreds of thousands of BIRDS migrating along the Pacific Flyway descend upon our coastal wetlands in search of refuge and food. Birds include gulls, eagles, hawks, owls, peregrine falcon, osprey, and a variety of shore birds and waterfowl along the coast. Among the best of coastal viewing locations is MacKerricker State Park.

About The Whales

The celebration is all about the migration of the Pacific Gray Whale with their newborn calves from the protected lagoons of western Baja to their ancestral feeding grounds in the cold waters of the Bering Sea. The migrating whales, numbering 18,000 - 23,000 individuals, pass by the Mendocino Coast twice each year: once going south between the months of November and February, and again going north between the months of February and June. Since they don't migrate simultaneously, not all the whales make it all the way to Baja. Some linger off shore and observations suggest that these are primarily the younger males. Newly pregnant females lead the northward migration, followed by males.

The California Gray Whale travels the longest distance on migration of any mammal. This species is the only whale whose year-round habits and whereabouts are well known.

Examinations of the stomachs of whales during the whaling days indicated that gray whales eat very little while migrating and while in calving areas. Thus, many whales may go without food for three to five months.

The animals travel south to the three major breeding and calving lagoons on the west coast of Baja California, Mexico: Laguna Ojo de Libre, San Ignacio Lagoon (also known as Scammon's Lagoon), and Magdalena Bay. Captain Charles Scammon charted many of these areas in the mid-1800s as he hunted gray whales.

The northbound migration begins with immature animals (some of which may not have gone all the way to Mexico), adult males, and females without calves. Breeding sometimes is observed at this time.

Calves usually are rambunctious but stay close to their mothers as they become more coordinated and develop an insulating blubber layer. Calves are at least a month old before they migrate north with their mothers. Mothers and calves are the last to leave the lagoons and move somewhat more slowly.

During the spring migration, if the weather is good, you can see whales within a few hundred yards of coastal headlands.

The full round-trip migration from the Baja calving lagoons to the Bering Sea and back is 10,000 miles (16,000 km), the longest known for any mammal. Other whales also are known to migrate between summer high latitude feeding grounds and more temperate low latitude breeding and calving areas. However, researchers know more about the gray whale because it moves so close to shore. This near-shore movement has led to speculation that gray whales navigate by staying in shallow water or keeping the surf noises to one side or the other depending upon their direction of travel.

2/23/24- Captain Tim and his crew James and Josh were all fantastic. Booked a Whale watch tour for our family of six. Beautiful day, high but soft swells, and the whales! OMG! We saw so many, even a synchronized, double whale fluke dive, several single flukes. Two full breaches right in front of us and lots of spouts!!! Can't say enough about the helpful crew James and Josh. Our every need was met. Helpful hands getting from bow to stern. Captain Tim skippered the boat with excellence. Smooth sailing all the way. We felt safe and in very capable hands. We all had a wonderful adventure and highly recommend All Aboard Adventure. We will definitely be returning. Thank you All Aboard Adventures!!!

How much for a two day fishing trip for two men I'm trying to go fishing with my homeboy somewhere.

Absolutely terrible whale watching cruise today. Captain never introduced himself and never apologized for leaving us sitting in the rockiest of waters ever. 12 of 21 people were throwing up and this captain couldn't find a whale until we were finally ending this terrible cruise. Strangely, the captain left the boat between swells for 10 minutes at a time as guests were puking again. It was just mean. This was a 2.5 hour hellish ride. Would never recommend and believe they should give at least a partial refund.

Tim and his crew always do a great job and the boat is comfortable. Easy to book a trip I just called and told him what day I wanted to go and he had plenty of room. We had another great crab/rockfish combo with limits for the whole boat. Can't wait to go again

Happy I booked a last minute crab charter for my son and I. They were very accommodating, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Every other client had fished with them regularly and raved about the combo trip too. The entire crew was friendly which if you've been on enough charters you know this can be rare. First mate Josh was kind and encouraging to my son and we got our limit. We will make sure to book a charter with All Aboard for every visit now.

I took my boyfriend fishing for his 32 birthday! He had a blast! I was sea sick the entire time but the captain and deck hands checked up on me, and honestly everyone was such gentleman! Worth the money, and the captain made sure everyone was able to catch something!! My boyfriend said he would definitely come again, this time I'll just drop him off and do my own thing lol thank you so much to everyone who made his gift so enjoyable! God bless!

This was a great day fishing with my son in law and grandsons. We all got limits but what made the trip was the way the Skipper and deck hands treated my grandsons. This was their first time ever on the ocean. The first thing they asked when we got in was, "When can we go again grandpa." Thank you to the skipper and crew of the Sea Hawk. I will definitely go again

Captin Tim and his crew were amazing. Me and both my boys ages 11 and 13 went out and caught our limit. With help from the captain my youngest son caught a nice Ling. The captain and crew made sure the younger kids on the boat were always being helped and having an awesome time. Could not say enough good things about this outfit. Will be back soon.

Whale Run 5k & 10k and Fun Walk Soroptimist International of Fort Bragg and Noyo Sunrise is proud to sponsor and host the ever-popular run and walk along the coast that includes a Kiddie Race, 10k and 5k runs and a Fun Walk.

Downtown Wine Walk

The Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce and Visit Fort Bragg are thrilled to bring back the Fort Bragg Whale Festival Downtown Wine Walk. On Saturday, March 16 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM over a dozen merchants will host wineries and serve complimentary food to pair with wines.

Fort Bragg Rotary Club’s Beer Fest

Rotary Beer Festival is back. Save the date and join us on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Eagles Hall from 12-4pm for an incredible selection of beer and some great live music. Tickets are $40 and food will be available for purchase. So come taste some ales and watch the whales at this benefit for Fort Bragg Rotary Club with proceeds going to scholarships as well as local and international projects.
