Frequently Asked Questions

What is a self guided tour?

A self-guided tour in Japan is a pre-planned travel package that provides you with a detailed itinerary, accommodation, and transportation options for exploring the country at your own pace. Unlike guided tours, you will not be accompanied by a tour guide, allowing you more flexibility and independence during your trip. You will also be handed a travelogue that give you information about all the details you may need while traveling in Japan.

Can I customize my self-guided tour?

You can customize your tour in some way by choosing among the different options, which typically include pre-night and post-night extension, meaning you can add one day before and/or after your trip. However, if you want to create your own itinerary by going to Okinawa Island for example, you can contact our team to create and tailor the perfect itinerary for your Japan experience, that caters to your interests and preferences.

How do I navigate Japan during my self-guided tour?

Japan has an efficient and extensive public transportation system, including trains, buses, and subways. The train is usually the go-to means of transport across cities in Japan. Our self-guided tour packages come with detailed detailed itineraries and Japan Rail Passes to help you navigate your way through Japan with ease. Additionally, most major cities have English signage, making it even more convenient for you to explore the country.

Are meals included in the self-guided tour packages?

Our self-guided tour packages usually include breakfast at your accommodations. Lunch and dinner are often not included, giving you the flexibility to explore Japan's diverse and delicious cuisine at your own pace. Please check the details for each day to know if the meals are included or not. We can also provide recommendations for local restaurants and dining experiences to suit your taste.

Can I extend my self-guided tour?

Yes, you can extend your self-guided tour by adding one extra day to your itinerary by selecting the option. However, if you want to change further the details of your trip, by adding a new destination for example, please contact our team, and we will be happy to help you plan an extended stay in Japan.

Do I need a visa? Do I need vaccinations?

As of October 11, 2022, Japan will open its borders to all Europeans (including the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) and North Americans (Canada and the United States) without requiring a visa.

Only non-triply vaccinated travelers need a negative PCR test performed within 72 hours prior to departure.

Do I still need a visa to travel to Japan as a tourist?

No, no visa is required for blue countries including all European countries (European Union, United Kingdom and Switzerland included) and North American countries (Canada and United States). List of blue countries: https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html . If you have another nationality, please contact the Japanese embassy in your country of residence to obtain this visa.

Do I still need a PCR or antigen test to go to Japan?

No, if you are triple vaccinated with the vaccines approved by Japan (Pfizer, Moderna, ...exhaustive list here : https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page24e_000317.html ) there is no need for any test.

I do not have 3 doses of vaccine or I am not vaccinated against COVID, can I enter Japan?

Proof of Covid vaccines is no longer required for travelers from "blue" countries. Therefore, unvaccinated travelers can enter Japan if they live in blue countries. But a negative PCR test is required at embarkation for travelers who are not vaccinated 3 times.

Is there still a quarantine upon arrival in Japan?

Quarantine and testing on arrival have been eliminated for travelers from blue countries.

Is insurance mandatory?

No, but it is recommended. Japan Experience, as an option of its tours, provides appropriate travel insurance solutions.

What anti-covid measures are still in place in Japan?

The mask must be worn indoors (except in exceptional cases) and in transportation.

What applications should I download before entering Japan?

For tracking the evolution of the coronavirus epidemic, the Japanese government recommends downloading several applications:

MySOS, the health and location tracking app (it will be used to confirm your location, health status and accommodation).

COCOA, the COVID-19 contact confirmation app (this will be used to notify you of possible contact with a COVID-19 positive person).

Driving in Japan: the logistics

By Japan specialist Toby

While public transport makes travel swift around the main island of Honshu, you’ll need to rent a car to see some of Japan’s wilder frontiers. Japan specialist Toby has just returned from a self-drive journey across Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, and we asked him what it’s like to drive in Japan.

What are the cars like?

We do all our car hire through Toyota as, unsurprisingly, they have the best coverage. Generally I’d suggest a five-door saloon (sedan); a Toyota Corolla for example (for larger groups, minivans are available). Even in the most remote corners, the roads are smooth and well maintained so there’s no need for a 4x4.

Which side of the road do the Japanese drive on?

The left. In the late 19th-century, the British arrived in Japan to help build the railway system, which was left-side running. As the railway ran on the left, it was logical that motor traffic followed suit.

Driving through the flower farms of Biei, Hokkaido

How do you navigate?

With ease. As part of your car hire you’ll get a GPS system which is simple to use — although I suggest getting the car rental staff to programme it into English and get it set up for you before you drive off.

Postcodes are so convoluted in Japan that no-one uses them, so you’ll input a telephone number or map code into your GPS instead. Input the telephone number of your hotel and you’ll end up right outside. If there’s a particular waterfall you’d like to visit, you can input a map code — you’ll find most points of interest have one — and be taken to the nearest point on the road.

Is parking a hassle?

You’ll find most hotels have free parking, and there are lots of little stopping places along the country roads where you can pause and admire the views. On Hokkaido you’ll even find roadside hot springs where you can stop for a dip (swimwear optional).

Can filling up with fuel be complicated?

Japanese filling stations all use attendants, so happily it’s a simple process. As you pull up the attendant will confirm if you want a full tank, fill you up, and then take your cash, all within an efficient few minutes. They are dotted liberally across the country so you don’t need to panic about low fuel levels.

Tsunoshima Bridge, Sea of Japan

What’s the traffic like?

Outside the cities, it’s a dream. It’s worth noting that the national speed limit is 50 km/h (31 mph) and 80 km/h (49 mph) on the highways. While the Japanese are usually fastidious when it comes to following rules, some have drawn a line at the speed limit and you’ll notice a few speeding cars. Speed cameras are abundant.

In the cities, traffic is stop-start and travel slow. If you’re heading to a city for a few days, I suggest dropping your car back at a rental hub and picking it up again when you leave.

Any dangers on the road?

Road travel, mainly thanks to the slow speed limits, is considered safe although it’s worth noting that in rural areas look out for deer or foxes on the road.

Are there places to eat along the way?

Most little towns will have a convenience store where you can pick up a bento lunchbox full of rice, vegetables and umeboshi (pickled fruit). You’ll often find small restaurants that serve just one or two dishes — there’s rarely a picture menu so this can sometimes be a gamble, but I’ve always found the dishes delicious.

Do you need any specific documentation to drive in Japan?

To drive in Japan you need an International Driving Permit. You will need to apply from your home country before travel and there’s usually a small fee. The permit is then valid worldwide for 12 months.

Suggested itinerary

After touching down at the airport, you'll continue to the city centre.

Tokyo, Japan's capital, is a city unlike any other, home to innovative, cutting-edge design and traditional culture. Immerse yourself in cultural experiences, visit exquisitely landscaped gardens, and admire the city's high-tech side; there is something for everyone. For the foodie, there's plenty to indulge in whether you visit the Michelin star-rated restaurants or cosy hidden izakayas (food pubs) in your local neighbourhood.

During your stay in Tokyo, you'll be living central, allowing for quick access to all of Tokyo's sights and attractions. You can also find countless bars, restaurants, shopping malls, game halls, and cafes to explore in your local area.

We recommend visiting the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observatory in Shinjuku as an easy afternoon activity on your arrival day. You can learn everything there is to know about the beloved city while taking in the breathtaking views of the cityscape. After, grab dinner at a local ramen store or izakaya.

Kick-off your first full day by exploring Tokyo's bustling streets. Due to its size, we recommend deciding on specific areas to explore; ideally, two to three neighbourhoods are sufficient for a day's worth of sightseeing.   Recommended must-see sights include the Imperial Palace Plaza, Senso-ji temple (the oldest in Tokyo), Tokyo Skytree, the Tsukiji fish market, and the fashionable Ginza district with its grand boulevards and top-notch department stores.

For lunch, there are plenty of options to choose from; experience the joys of a tasty bowl of local ramen or soba (buckwheat noodles), or try a Japanese set lunch known as teishoku. These set deals typically include rice, miso soup, one or two main dishes, and tea.

To end your day on a high note, we recommend dining in Roppongi Hills at one of the many stylish restaurants. For a late-night activity, head to Tokyo Skytree with its 360-degree view of Tokyo.

Tokyo – Day Trip to Nikko

If you are looking for a day trip out of the city, Nikko is a must-have on your travel list. Two and a half hours north of Tokyo, Nikko is just a direct train away from Tokyo's Asakusa station.

Among the many attractions of Nikko is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Toshogu Shrine. This unique destination serves as a mausoleum for shogun (political leader) Tokugawa Ieyasu, the great military leader of the early 17th century. After, explore the beautiful national park complete with expansive lakes and picturesque waterfalls surrounding the shrine.

If you have time, a visit to the Tamozawa Imperial Villa is worthwhile. The villa, which was erected in 1899, uses parts of a previous building that stood in Tokyo.

Before being moved to Nikko, the building had previously served as the Tokyo residence of the Tokugawa family and temporarily as the Imperial Palace. Once relocated, the building became a summer residence and retreat for the Imperial Family. Before taking the train back to Tokyo, try Nikko's high-quality wagyu beef at the Nikko Kanaya Hotel restaurant.

For your final day in Tokyo, we suggest a visit to the neighbourhood of Harajuku, the birthplace of Tokyo's most eccentric fashion movements. Down Takeshita Dori, you can find trendy fashion boutiques, uniquely themed cafes, alluring speciality stores and people-watch the stylish characters of Harajuku.

After Harajuku, visit the relaxing Yoyogi Park located right next to Harajuku Station, and take a little stroll through the park and visit the tranquil Meiji Jingu shrine - one of Japan's most famous shrines.

If classical Japanese paintings pique your interest, the Ota Memorial Museum of Art is a close walk away. The museum carries a small but impressive collection of Ukiyo-e works, including woodblock prints and paintings, dating back to Japan's Edo period (1600-1868).

To end the day off with a bang, check out the neighbouring city of Shibuya, visit Shibuya Scramble Square for excellent city views and end the day with some kaiten (revolving) sushi.

Tokyo – Memanbetsu – Shiretoko National Park and Utoro Onsen

Today you'll leave the hustle and bustle of Tokyo for the tranquillity and wild nature of Hokkaido. It's a two-hour domestic flight from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to reach Memanbetsu Airport, located on Hokkaido's northeast coast.

At Memanbetsu, you'll pick up your rental car and set off on your drive to the Shiretoko Peninsula and the small town of Utoro Onsen. The drive is approximately 90 kilometres along the coast and full of excellent ocean views.

Utoro is located on Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO Natural Heritage-listed national park. It's primarily known for its hot springs ('onsen' in Japanese), many of which are connected to the various ryokan (Japanese inn) around town, where you will also be spending the night. Try and arrive in advance to take full advantage of the relaxing baths with breathtaking views of unspoiled nature before the traditional dinner usually served around 6.00 pm.

Shiretoko National Park and Utoro Onsen

Today is dedicated to the many wonders of the Shiretoko Peninsula. Shiretoko National Park contains some of the most pristine nature in Japan and an abundance of rare animal species.

Shiretoko Peninsula is home to opportunities to embark on thrilling whale and bear watching cruises. During the chilly winter months, early morning cruises depart from Rausu, where you can witness the majestic bird species that northern Japan has to offer, like the striking Steller's sea eagle.

Make sure you don't miss the chance to visit the Shiretoko Park Nature Centre located at the National Park entrance. The centre serves as a rest stop, complete with a restaurant and gift shop and includes excellent information on the local area.

Utoro Onsen - Akan Mashu National Park and Lake Akan

Continuing your Hokkaido car journey southwest, you will reach Akan Mashu National Park, another stunning forest only a two and a half journey away. The park's extraordinary landscape has been shaped by thousands of years of volcanic activity, and it is also renowned for its pristine volcanic lakes, including Lake Akan, home to the unique and vibrant green moss-like balls known as marimo.

After exploring the national park, arrive at your ryokan with plenty of time to explore what the lakeside has to offer. Heading back to the ryokan, take a well-deserved bath in the hot springs absorbing the beautiful lakeside views and end the day dining in style with the superb traditional dishes the ryokan has to offer.

Lake Mashu, Lake Kussharo and/or Kushiro Marshland

Today you will have a full day in the Lake Akan area, where we recommend also visiting the two other impressive crater lakes in the National Park, Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo.

Lake Mashu is one of the best lake views in all of northern Japan. Surrounded by steep crater walls 200 metres (660 feet) high, it is one of the clearest lakes in the world and one of Japan's deepest.

Lake Kussharo, located 30 minutes from Lake Mashu, is another lovely caldera lake with a circumference of 57 kilometres, making it the largest lake in Akan Mashu National Park. Fishing, hiking, kayaking, and cycling are just a few of the outdoor activities available in the area. For those interested in bird watching, you can also drive nearby to Kushiro Marshland National Park to spot Japanese cranes.

Lake Akan - Daisetsuzan National Park and Asahidake Onsen

Today you will travel to Asahidake Onsen located in Daisetsuzan National Park. Enjoy the scenic four and a half hour journey through sloped landscapes, meadows, valleys, and gorges. Daisetsuzan National Park is Hokkaido's largest national park, preserving a mountainous area of virtually untouched wilderness larger than some of Japan's smaller prefectures. It's a hiker and outdoor enthusiast's dream!

Your base will be the small town of Asahidake Onsen, located at the foot of Mount Asahidake, Hokkaido's highest mountain (2290 meters). From here, you can take a ride on the Asahidake Ropeway cable car up the mountain. Daisetsuzan National Park has many hiking trails and is well-known for being one of the first places in Japan to see autumn colours as early as September.

Daisetsuzan National Park or Sounkyo

Today is a day of exploring the natural beauty of Hokkaido, either going deep into the Daisetsuzan National Park and hiking trails near Asahidake Onsen.

Alternatively, relaxing in Sounkyo, a hot spring town northwest of Daisetsuzan, is another excellent option. Bask in the renowned hot springs amidst pristine nature in a region comprising of gorges and 100-metre-high cliffs. The scenic resort town of Sounkyo is one of Hokkaido's top hot spring resorts, with the cosy village centre offering both modern and traditional onsen bath options, beautiful waterfalls with hiking opportunities and a plethora of dining options with restaurants nearby. Additionally, take the chance to witness a different perspective of Hokkaido's natural beauty with a mile-long cable lift ride accessible nearby Sounkyo to Mount Kurodake.

From here, you can choose to add a four-day extension program to your Hokkaido trip, including visits to the scenic volcanic Lake Toya (Shikotsu-Toya National Park) and the port city of Hakodate!

Asahidake Onsen - Shikotsu-Toya National Park - Lake Toya

Your extended excursion begins with a scenic 318-kilometre drive from Asahidake Onsen to Shikotsu-Toya National Park. To divide the trip, the towns of Biei and Furano are great resting spots.

The town of Biei is known for its captivating Aoi-ike (Blue Pond), while Furano is noted for its expansive lavender fields that blossom in June and July.

As you reach the shores of Lake Toya, you will arrive at your ryokan, where you will be spending two nights. As previously mentioned, arriving earlier will give you time to soak in the baths before enjoying the delectable dinner on offer.

Lake Toya or Lake Shikotsu

Day 2 of the extension trip consists of a full day in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Here you can roam around the volcanic Lake Toya and take a visit to Noboribetsu Onsen, Hokkaido's most famous spa town.

Above the town of Noboribetsu Onsen is Jigokudani (地獄谷), also known as Hell Valley, which is the main source of Noboribetsu's hot spring waters. Although a picturesque and exciting destination, watch out for the hot steam vents, sulfurous streams and other volcanic activity!

Those who can't get enough of Hokkaido's long scenic car rides can take a drive to Lake Shikotsu, a small town on the lake's eastern shore that has a visitor centre and a few lodging options. Here you will be able to rent boats, bicycles and scuba gear or join a sightseeing cruise on the lake in glass-bottomed boats.

Lake Toya - Hakodate

Wake up early to enjoy breakfast and a final onsen dip before heading off to the port city of Hakodate, only a two-hour drive away. Hakodate is a well-kept local secret and home to amazing panoramic city views, best admired from Mount Hakodate.

The city was one of the first Japanese ports to open to foreign trade in the 19th century, after 250 years of international isolation. Here you can explore unique buildings such as the Russian Orthodox Church, an Old British Consulate, a Chinese Memorial Hall and the old Hakodate Public Hall.

Hakodate - Matsumae

The last day of the extended excursion is a full day in Hakodate and the nearby town of Matsumae.

Start the day off with a visit to Fort Goryokaku, built in the final years of the Edo Period (mid-nineteenth century) to protect Hakodate from the imperialist threat posed by Western powers.

After you explore Fort Goryokaku, head to the town of Matsumae. Home to the only Japanese style castle to have been built in Hokkaido, the town is located one and a half to two hours from Hakodate. In the springtime, you will be able to witness the stunning blossoming of the ten thousand cherry trees surrounding the castle grounds.

Lastly, while visiting Hakodate, we recommend taking the opportunity to taste some of the delicious, fresh seafood for which the city is known.

Asahidake Onsen - Sapporo

Your final drive of this exciting Hokkaido exploration tour will be to Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido and Japan's fifth-largest city.

If you booked the optional package, the trip is four hours from Hakodate. If you didn't book the optional package, your trip is about three and a half hours from Asahidake.

After arriving in Sapporo, you drop off your car near your hotel. The final stay of your Hokkaido holiday will be two days and nights in this bustling northern city. In Sapporo, you will find a good mix of Japanese culture and foreign influences, with plenty of scenic sights, both natural and man-made.

The annual Sapporo Snow Festival (held in early February) draws more than two million tourists from abroad. Other places worth sites include the Sapporo Beer Museum and the Sapporo TV Tower located in Odori Park.

Today is one final day of leisure in Sapporo and an excellent opportunity to go shopping and make the last purchases before you head home. Finally, try some of the local delicacies like Sapporo's miso ramen, soup curry, and grilled lamb known as jingisukan, best enjoyed with a glass of Sapporo beer.

Return flight

It's time to say 'sayonara' (goodbye) or maybe 'matanee' (see you again) to Japan. You'll transfer from your hotel to Sapporo's New Chitose Airport. We hope you've enjoyed your adventure through Hokkaido, Japan's truly undiscovered gem!

Japan 8 days self drive in central region – summary itinerary.

Japan 8 days self drive in Central Region – Summary Itinerary

Japan Central Region / Chubu Road Map

Why do the self drive with rental car in japan.

  • Freedom to explore anywhere and anytime.
  • Do any impromptu stop and visit the places local go and shop.
  • Driving is not difficult in Japan at all if you can manage Malaysia and Singapore road trip as most Japanese drivers and pedestrians are well-behaved and follow the rules like the ‘sheep’.
  • Enjoy more privacy – Having family bonding time with 3 generations together in the car, if you have grandparents and young children on the road trip. You don’t have to worry grandparents and young children can’t cope with the fast pace of the big group tour as this is your own private tour with car rental.
  • Enjoy more comfort – No need to carry your big luggage up and down stairs in the train station if you drive a rental car.
  • Enjoy more option where to stay – You can choose to stay in the hotel that is far away from the city with cheaper price but offer better values, eg with mountain view and luxury onsen/hot springs facilities & big space in the room (you don’t even realize you are actually in Japan as Japan city hotel is usually very small). You don’t have to choose to stay near the train station as the hotel in the train station is usually very narrow and small.
  • Cost saving with pax of 2 and above.  Of course, if you have a pax of 5, you will enjoy the most value from renting a car.
  • Japan is one of the best destinations to do self-drive in Asia.

Central Japan also Known as Chubu Japan

We like to self-drive within Japan outskirt cities, driving within major big cities is not recommended due to the heavy traffic and extremely narrow roads.  Most signs are posted in “Romaji”- in English which is readable for the foreigner. If you read Kanji/Chinese Character, you have the advantage of reading both in the signboard.  I strongly recommend getting in a car and driving around the outskirt of Japan, this is the way to see the beautiful “inaka”/countryside of Japan.  It is also more economical than buying expensive “shinkansen”/bullet train tickets or normal train tickets if you have pax of 4.  Furthermore, taxi cost a bomb in Japan.

Central Japan/日本中部/Chubu Japan are :

1. Aichi Prefecture-Nagoya 2.Gifu Prefecture-Takayama, Shirakawa-go 3.Toyama Prefecture-Tateyama & Kurobe Alpine & Tonami 4.Nagano Prefecture-Matsumoto 5.Yamanashi Prefecture-Mt Fuji 6.Kanagawa Prefecture (not in Central Japan) -Hakone

How to book a car?

Our rental car with 1500-1800cc cost about SGD$  100 per day including insurance protection.  Please use Rentalcars.com  to choose your favorite car.

If you book car rental online, it is important for you to  print out a hard copy of the insurance protection  you have paid for. That way, the staff in the car rental will not ask you to purchase again. Some car rental insists you purchase car insurance even you have told them you have already purchased online because they don’t believe you have already done as they can’t see it from their system. (We experience that in Japan & UK). Rentalcars.com is an online agent not the car rental company, just like Agoda is an online agent for hotels booking. Remember to print out the copy to show them as proof. Or you can opt out for car protection insurance when you book online but make sure you purchase with the staff when you pick up the car . Either way is ok. The key is to have car protection insurance and also don’t need to purchase twice.

Driving license:

An international driving permit is needed, do apply from your home country before departure.  Click the above link to see how to apply for an international driving permit if you are in Singapore.

  • Shopping:   Odawara & Matsumoto city

Food Guide in Chubu Japan/Central Japan :

  • Takayama Ramen (Takayama Prefecture) – Common toppings for Takayama ramen include char siu pork, bamboo shoots, and scallions.
  • Hida Beef (Hida)- High-quality breed of wagyu black-haired cattle raised in Gifu, tender and juicy.
  • Tatami Iwashi  (Tokai )- A thin, cracker-like sheet of baby sardines that has been sun-dried, cut into smaller pieces. Good to have it with beer or sake.

  • Miso-katsu (Aichi Prefecture) – Crispy fried tonkatsu with miso paste.
  • Houtou (Yamanashi Prefecture) – Wheat flour noodles cooked with pumpkin or other vegetables in miso soup. Noodle is wider and flatter than regular noodles.

Day 1 – Itinerary Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture

  • Arrived at Nagoya Airport – 8 am
  • Togokusan Fruits Park/東谷山フルーツパーク
  • Hotel Route Inn Nakatsugawa /中津川 in Gifu/岐阜

On the first day when we arrived in Nagoya Airport, we picked up the rental car then drove straight to Togokusan Fruit Park, away from the city area to avoid traffic.  We didn’t even drive into Nagoya city as you know city area is always full of traffic.

Togokusan Fruit Park is a nice fruit farm which has 15 orchards and 15 types of fruits. Depend on which season you choose and there are always different kind of fruits waiting for you there.  Do join the fruit picking activities offered in the park.

Magome/馬籠  is a small post town which served travelers connecting the major route from Tokyo and Kyoto in the Edo period, 300-400 years ago.  The town or I should say the village is built uphill and very pleasant to walk up to check on the photogenic view.  There are plenty of eateries and souvenirs where you could enjoy along the way.

Day 2 – Itinerary – Takayama in Gifu Prefecture

  • Yatai Kaikan Takayama
  • Takayama city
  • Route Inn Grantia Hidatakayama

Takayama/高山 as the name suggest is a city in the mountain area in Gifu Prefecture. There are a few things you could do in this town, one is the old town and the other you may want to explore is the Takayama Yatai Kaikan which is used for festivals. In the Takayama Yatai Kaikan, you learn a lot of different floats used in the Japanese ‘Matsuri’/festivals. Takayama is best known for their festival in the whole of Japan.

Day 3 – Itinerary – Takayama & Shirakawa Go in Gifu Prefecture

  • Takayama city – Nakabashi Bridge
  • Shirakawa-go, Ogimachi Village (UNESCO world heritage site)
  • Tonami Royal Hotel in Toyama

Before we left Takayama city, we went to check out the Nakabashi Bridge, the well-known RED bridge also symbol of Takayama. Strongly recommended to pay a little visit and take some photos with the RED bridge as it is very picturesque, especially during cherry blossom season.

Shirakawa Go/ 白川郷 is one of the highlights in Central Japan once this village has obtained the Unesco World Heritage. The view is stunning especially in the winter as the whole village is cover in snow.  I don’t like winter so choose a warmer season to go.  It is really up to you.

Day 4 – Itinerary – Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture

  • Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
  • Hotel Morinokaze Tateyama

Kurobe Alpine Route is the unique and interesting route which you will experience different means of transportation. You need a whole day to do Kurobe Alpine route and you will be in the cable cars, trolley buses and ropeway. No doubt, stunning view along the way. The best time to see snow walls is by early spring mid-April to May.  I was here in November so there are no snow walls (too bad) and a certain period is closed and visitors are not able to go up.  Do check out the availability.

DAY 5 – Itinerary – Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture

  • Matsumoto Art museum in Matsumoto City
  • Shopping in Matsumoto City
  • Hotel Montagne Matsumoto

When you are in Matsumoto city, the one thing you need to check out is the Matsumoto Castle .  And if you know Yayoi Kusama, the polka dots artists then you may want to visit some of her work in the Art Museum in Matsumoto city.  Matsumoto city is Yayoi Kusama’s hometown.  It was a raining day so I went to the Art  Museum and glad it did not disappoint me at all.

Day 6 – Itinerary – Mt Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture

  • Matsumoto Castle
  • Lake Yamanaka
  • Hotel Mt.Fuji , Yamanashi

You can see Mt Fuji from almost everywhere, even in Central Japan.  You can include Yamanaka Lake then choose to stay in Mt Fuji Hotel in Yamanashi, the view is stunning as you get to see the unblocked view of Mt Fuji from the balcony of your hotel room.

Day 7 – Itinerary – Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture

  • Mt Fuji Station 5 ( Gotemba Trail)
  • Hakone Hotel Kowakien

Hakone is not in Central Japan but in Kanagawa Prefecture, quite near to Tokyo, only slightly more than an hour away from Tokyo.  Hakone is famous for its hot springs and you are still able to see Mt Fuji from here. There are several things to do in Hakone and we choose to do a train ride to Odawara.

Day 8 – Itinerary- Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture

  • Toyota museum in Nagoya
  • Meitetsu Inn Chitahandaeki

If you love cars, then the Toyota Museum is the place to spend for a few hours.  In this huge museum, you are not only seeing Toyota cars from vintage to modern, but you also see all the fun and sporty cars from manufacturers around the world.  I am not really into cars but I have to be honest, I enjoy this car museum so much!

Day 9 – Itinerary Nagoya Airport

  • Nagoya Airport

My Budget for 3  Pax:

  • Air ticket from Singapore to Nagoya – SGD 600-700 per pax with SIA promotion. Total: SGD 2100 for 3 pax
  • Hotel for 3 pax inclusive breakfast & onsen (hot springs) 3-5 stars : SGD $150-$220 per night. Roughly SGD $1600
  • Car Rental plus insurance for 8 days: SGD $1,000
  • Misc & petrol & food: SGD $1,000 – $2,000 (We usually have our meals in family restaurants along the highway and it cost about SGD $10-20 dollars per person.)
  • Total spent for 3 pax for 9 days 8 nights in Central Japan: SGD $6700 so SGD$2300 per pax.

Additional Note

This is only my budget and it works as a guideline for you.  It really depends on what kind of hotel you stay in.  If you choose to stay in Airbnb (click on my Airbnb link to get discount) which can accommodate with more people and prepare your own breakfast & dinner, you can save quite a bit too. Most of my hotel stay in the Central Region are with luxury onsen/hot springs so the prices of the hotel cost a little more.  If you choose a hotel without onsen/hot spring, the price can be even lower.

Another way to save money is you may want to get your breakfast in the convenient store such as “Lawson”  or “7 Eleven” which can be found almost every 500m and open 24 hours. Food in the convenience store are cheap and affordable and plenty of variety to choose from.  Please check out their bento set, Oden & Japanese dessert in the convenient stores.

“Family restaurant” is casual dining in Japan which has a free parking area and food are cheap and in a bigger portion. Some of the famous chains are called Royal Host, Denny’s, Joyful, Gusto and many more. The family restaurant usually serves a combination of Japanese & Western cuisine & Chinese.  Don’t hesitate to drive in and try out their meal in the Japanese “Family Restaurant” as it provides a good value meal.

This is so awesome! I believe that to get to know a place, it’s better to drive around it… you see way more. I also like to see smaller towns that show the culture than big cities full of tourists.

' src=

Road trip and self drive will enable to discover many hidden gems!

' src=

Wow! This is a beautiful place. What an exciting adventure!

' src=

Road trips are the best. They give you the opportunity to really see and experience the various places. You look like you had a wonderful time.

Dear Benita,

Now more and more people started to drive in Japan with the help of technologies such as google map, we won’t easily get lost. Even if we do, we can also ask google translator to help us to ask around to the local.

' src=

Road trip with amazing views, looks real real fun

' src=

It looks like you had a great time, I love a road trip where you can drive yourself, the freedom is second to none.

Dear Elizabeth,

Yes, one thing with self drive on road trip is freedom to explore anywhere and stop anywhere you wish. At least you don’t have to run to catch the train or buses. Catching the train with big luggage can be very challenging as some of the train station in Japan do not have lift up and down the station.

' src=

Love your photos! The scenery (and your outfits) are so beautiful! Japan is on my bucket list, and I hope to be able to visit someday!

Dear Amber,

Thanks for your comment. Japan is a beautiful country, it is clean and full of traditional elements in most of the old town. The shopping is greet fun too.

' src=

It looks like you had an amazing itinerary. I will surely add this to my bucket lists it looks so exciting.

Dear Shubhada,

Central Japan is a great place to do a road trip with rental car, there are not many traffic compared to big cities like Osaka and Tokyo area. If you have family with young children and grandparents, this is truly a highly recommended way to see Japan. All sit in the car rental and enjoy great bonding while sightseeing Central Japan. And , the most important thing is, cost saving.

' src=

Love a road trip would love to do one next weekend. Looks like you had a great time

Dear Taslyn,

Glad to hear that you are doing a raod trip soon and I hope you have a great time too.

' src=

Road trips can be so fun, too! What a great way to see more of a country and on your schedule, too!

Dear Ayana,

I totally agree! We can choose our own schedule and do any impromptu stop at any scenic area along the way.

' src=

I love a nice roadtrip! All the pictures you show are stunning, the landscape and you! All your outfits are so lovely 🙂

The road trip in Central Japan is really beautiful, especially places where you can see the iconic Mt Fuji.

' src=

Wow, I’ve never been to Japan and I will definitely need to learn driving before I can think of a roadtrip. But Japan definitely seems like a great place to start with!

Dear Tiffany,

If you have not been to Japan, you should go as it is one of the best place to visit. The country is both old and new element to see. Some places and city are very ancient which is hard to find these days. You can always go with friends who know how to drive and you can help read the google map or help feeding the driver to make sure he/she is awake. Lol

' src=

I love a road trip, it is probably the best way to visit and enjoy the beauty of any place. I am glad that you had a great time!

Dear Vaundhra,

You are right, self drive on the road trip is one of the best way to explore Central Japan. You have the freedom to go anywhere you like and stop anytime you feel like.

Thanks very much for sharing your experience with us. I’m planning a trip to Nagoya then Takayama and Shirakawago on 28th Nov. Appreciate your kind advice if it is better to drive from Nagoya to Takayama and then from Takayama, do a day trip drive to Shirakawago or should I take public bus from Nagoya to Takayama and register for a half day tour trip to Shirakawago? We’re a family of 3. Is it easy to drive from Nagoya to Takayama as I understand that it’s a 2 hours drive? Will there be snow on the road? Fyi, I’ve driven in long distance drive in South of New Zealand, Japan Hokkaido, Yamanakako & Karuizawa and Santorini Greece before.

Dear Maybel, Thanks for your comment. If you have some self-drive experiences in other countries, then driving in Central Japan Nagoya Takayama Shiragawa-go should not be an issue. Your concern on the snow would highly depend on the weather forecast. Japanese weather forecast is 99% accurate. You can check two weeks before your departure. If the snow is not heavy you are still able to drive up. The drive to Takayama mountain was not too hard for us in the mid of Nov. No snow but two days later there was huge snow. So it is really depending on the weather forecast. Please arrive at Shirakawa-Go as early as possible else the car park will be full and your car has to queue outside the carpark. We arrive before 10 am.

I have a write up on car rental in Japan in details and you may want to find out more about renting car and road trip condition in Japan.

I hope my answer helps a bit. Please feel free to ask further if you have other doubts. I would love to share my experience with you.

Sorry for the late reply as I am on the Australia road trip now.

Hello, I heard that the highway tolls in Japan are very expensive but you have not mention any tolls in your post. Did you have a pass or the roads that you drive along do not have tolls? Also, I am curious whether is it difficult to find parking and whether is the parking expensive?

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for your questions.

I have written a more recent blog on Hiroshima Shikoku and Kansai road trip which includes how much I paid for toll roads and other information regarding self-drive in Japan. It has about 40 blogs and you can learn about the tips and what to expect, eat and stay in Japan.

http://thinkerten.com/wordpress/2019/04/hiroshima-shikoku-kansai-japan-self-drive-itinerary-a-complete-guide/

“How to rent a Car in Japan”, will tell all the details about car rental and highway and parking condition in Japan. http://thinkerten.com/wordpress/2019/03/how-to-rent-a-car-in-japan-touchdown-from-hiroshima-airport/

You asked if there are other roads that are not charged in Japan? The answer is YES. When you key in the destination in the GPS in the car, (rental car usually comes with a GPS), it will display few options to choose from. One is without toll and it also tells you how long to arrive in each route. Please refer to the above blog “how to rent a car”, it has the picture of the GPS and routes to choose. Toll road routes do not necessarily always the fastest to arrive at your destination. I have tried non-toll road too, it has a lot of traffic lights and the speed is only at 60-80kmph, but you get to see the local neighborhood and the daily’s life look like. Sometimes, you can just stop at the supermarket and shop like the locals. Most of the supermarket has huge parking lots outside the building to attract customers to come in. The supermarket has very good ready-made food, most importantly very cheap. You can have lunch there as some also provide tables and chairs for you to have their ready-made bento.

For Parking in Japan, it really depends on which part of Japan. Anywhere outside the Tokyo area is not that hard to get parking. Say if you are planning a road trip to Central Japan. Most parking areas are not charged, especially if you are at outskirt visiting shrines. Most of the hotel that I booked also provide free and easy parking for Central Japan. I remembered I did not pay so much for parking for the Central Japan road trip. For Shirakawa-go (one of the important sites in Central Japan), there is a huge parking area but it is charged at a reasonable price. Shirakawa-Go parking is always crowded because it is a Unesco Site and very popular among tourists local and overseas. One tip I can give you is driving there before 10 am, else you have to wait outside the carpark when the carpark is full. (For Shiragawa-Go site I mean)

As for other parts of Central Japan, the parking was not too hard as compared to my recent Kansai (Osaka)’s road trip. If you have your itinerary plan made, please also include the nearest spot to park your car in your itinerary plan. Research where to park your car near the attraction that you want to visit first. (FYI, anywhere outside Tokyo do not have so many people, the population and cars are way lesser and that make Japan (except Tokyo) is so easy to do self-drive) Furthermore, Japanese people behave and drive politely.

I hope I have answered your questions but if you still have further queries, please do not hesitate to ask. I am more than willing to share my experience with you.

Do check on my latest self-drive guide for Hiroshima Shikoku Kansai(Kyoto-Osaka-Nara), it tells you about Japan highway condition & Highway rest area, petrol station, convenient stores, supermarket (how to save), onsen etiquette, Japanese style hotel/ryokan style vs Japanese western-style hotel, Japanese Food and many more.

Hi, am very impressed with your self drive trip in Japan. Am planning one in autumn next year. I just wish to know if parking are expensive and also about the tolls. Would appreciate your advise. My itinerary would cover Tokyo, Nikko, Hakone, Mt. Fuji, Alpine Route, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka.

Dear Violet,

Thanks for your comment.

I was pretty impressed with your itinerary which covers so many places and how long are you planning to stay?

Renting a car is a good choice as driving is really easy and no traffic anywhere out of Tokyo. About the toll charges, it does not cost a lot if you are not including Shikoku island as for my recent trip, Hiroshima-Shikoku-Kyoto-Nara-Osaka, it cost more because Shikoku Island has many bridges (Shimanami Kaido) connecting those little islands. Those stunning bridges cost more to cross over.

Please ask for ETC (Electronic Toll Charge) from the car rental counter as ETC will help you to save 20-30% than paying cash. It is postpaid so you can pay after you return your car and every toll roads you used is itemized.

You may want to find out about car rental, highway road condition and other tips from the below link. The GPS in the car will tell you a few routes to choose from. It shows you how long, how far, how much each route is going to cost you. Charges route doesn’t mean it is the fastest to reach your destination. Click the link and there are few pictures to show the GPS machine.

This is the summary itinerary for my recent trip to Japan, it has all the budget on how much I spent and where to stay. It may work as a reference for you.

As for parking, anywhere outside the big city, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto are basically free. Compared to my UK self-drive, Japan cost less on parking.

Please don’t hesitate to ask more questions as I am very happy to share my experience with you. Happy planning:)

hi, i know this is an old post but wonder if you can advise. 1. You drove from tokyo to nagoya on your last leg..did u do a stopover ? How long is this route ? 2. Did u stay in tokyo city or outskirt of tokyo?

thanks alot.

Dear Veronica,

1 We didn’t drive to Tokyo to Nagoya. Tokyo is never a good place to drive, so please avoid driving into Tokyo.

2. We always drive outskirt of Tokyo. We flew to Nagoya and do Central Japan self drive, not Tokyo area.

The 10 most spectacular road trips for exploring Japan

With a set of four wheels, you can explore more remote areas like the national parks of Tōhoku © Ippei Naoi / Getty Images

Whether you're swerving along the asphalt in the wild and expansive north, skirting the towering bluffs and wave-battered coasts of western Honshu, or winding through the archipelago of the Inland Sea, you can’t beat the freedom of being behind the wheel. And as an island nation with nearly three-quarters of its terrain covered by mountains, Japan seems custom-built for scenic road trips.

So buckle up for our 10 favorite road trips in Japan.

Aerial view of the curves of a scenic mountain road in Fuji-Hakone Izu National Park in autumn, Japan.

1. Izu Peninsula to Hakone

Best drive from oceanside to Mt Fuji highs Minamiizu – Hakone; 115km (71 miles), 1-2 days

The epic route from Izu Peninsula to Hakone is a favorite among driving enthusiasts. From the Izu Peninsula ’s southern tip, the coastal highway passes through Shimoda, a surfers’ haunt and historic port town, and Higashiizu, site of the fabled moon road power spot where waxing moons trace a beam of light across the Pacific, supposedly imbuing any witness with a divine energy. Further north, the road hugs the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone , from where you’ll get scintillating views of Mt Fuji on a clear day.

Finish this road trip in style on the Hakone Skyline, a famously twisty  tōge (mountain road) that served as an inspiration for the Hollywood movie  The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (though the actual mountain drift race scenes in the film were shot in LA).

Local tip: The driftway is one of 30-plus “Melody Roads” in Japan – so named for the tactile grooves that emit musical notes as tires roll over them.

2. The Seto Inland Sea along the Shimanami Kaidō

Best for scenic island-hopping via suspension bridges   Onomichi – Imabari; 70km (43 miles), allow one day

A popular cycling and scenic driving route, the Shimanami Kaidō traces lazy "S" shapes along the Seto Inland Sea via wind-whipped suspension bridges and island villages lost in time. Drivers who move at a leisurely pace will be rewarded with watercolor views of the Inland Sea haze silhouetting the many humpbacked islands contained within it.

Detour: For a detour you won’t forget, check out Kōsan-ji , a singularly kitschy temple on the island of Ikuchi-jima. This garish religious monument fuses a litany of architectural styles, from Italian marble foundations to ancient Chinese iconography.

3. The Noto Peninsula drive

Best for dramatic coastal seascapes Takaoka – Kanazawa; 236km (147 miles), 1-2 days

From the picture-perfect sunrise of Amaharashi Beach to the bracing coastline of Ishikawa Prefecture, this road trip throws down some of Japan’s finest coastal scenery.

The route centers around Noto, a dark, rugged peninsula home to solemn shrines and dramatic seascapes. In west Noto, you’ll also find the Shiroyone Senmaida rice terraces tumbling down toward the sea, and the port city Wajima with its 1000-year-old morning market. Finish the journey in Kanazawa , a former samurai stronghold and custodian of Japan’s traditional arts and crafts.

Planning tip: The city is home to a number of enlightening museums, including the impressive 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art .

Hikers on the trail around the ropeway's upper station at Asahi-dake Mountain (Mt. Asahidake)

4. Coast-to-coast Hokkaidō

Best for gorgeous northern countryside Rausu – Hakodate; 700km (435 miles), 3-4 days

Hokkaidō , Japan’s northernmost island, is a driver’s dream: vast, untamed, sparsely populated and veined with quality roads (though they’re best avoided in the snow-dumped winter). The recommended coast-to-coast drive traverses over 400 miles (644km) of open road from the UNESCO-recognized Shiretoko Peninsula in the east to the old colonial port town of Hakodate in the west.

It's a journey best savored, given the wealth of natural scenery and worthwhile diversions: the 17-mile (27km) pencil-straight “Road to Heaven” highway  (天に続く道); the calderas and primeval forests of Akan-Mashū National Park; the Roller Coaster Road zigzagging vertically through the pastoral farmlands of Biei; and Sapporo , a lively entertainment hub and the largest metropolis north of Tokyo .

5. Central Western Japan: Shimane to Kyōtango

Best for cool geology, chill coastline and an ancient shrine Iino-Ura – Ine; 355km (22o miles), 2-3 days

The scenic drive from Iino-Ura (Shimane) to Ine (Kyōtango) snakes between dense forests and a sparsely populated, green-swept coastline. Along the way, you’ll hit Izumo, home to one of Japan’s oldest shrines ( Izumo Taisha ), the sparkling bay of Lake Shinji in Matsue City, and Japan’s only large dune system at Tottori’s San’in Kaigan Geopark.

In the Kyōtango region, rolling hills and crystal blue waters set the scene for your final destination: Ine, a picture-book village famed for its funaya (fishing boat houses) built on stilts above the shore.

A lone road runs through scenic countryside to the towering Mount Aso in Japan.

6. Kyūshū: Mt. Aso to Cape Sata

Best for soaking up subtropical volcanic vibes Mt. Aso – Cape Sata; 322km (200 miles), 2-3 days

Drive through the rolling grasslands of Kumamoto to find Japan’s largest caldera and active volcano, Mt. Aso. The Aso Panorama Line offers the best course, weaving along the caldera’s outer rim and perpetually casting its gaze toward the belching volcano in the middle. From Aso, head south along the spine of Kyūshū  toward the most southern tip of Japan’s four main islands, Cape Sata.

Planning tip: Before you arrive at the observatory pinned to the Pacific coast, consider a night at one of the many onsen towns en route, or an overnight stay in the laidback subtropical city of Kagoshima  to enjoy some black pork, sweet-potato shōchū (distilled liquor) and views of volcano Sakurajima seemingly floating on the bay.

Best for exploring Japan's rural backroads Fukushima City – Aomori City; 335km (208 miles), 2-3 days

Tōhoku , a region whose name means “northeast,” is webbed in immaculate driving roads that carve through its national parks, virgin forests, and the towns and cities still recovering from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

The journey from Fukushima to Aomori swerves past the green-coated islets of Matsushima Bay – said to have put the 17th-century father of Japan’s haiku poetry, Matsuo Bashō, at a loss for words – and the foamy seascapes and knobbly sea stacks of the 1000km-long (621km) Michinoku Coastal Trail.

Detour: Top detours include the winding road to the large volcanic crater lake at Mt Zaō in Miyagi Prefecture, and the road circumnavigating Aomori's pristine Lake Towada, whose serene waters you can paddle by kayak.

Kamikura Shrine is a traditional Shinto shrine built into a hillside in rural Japan.

8. Coastal Wakayama

Best for a castle, onsen and sacred trails Wakayama City – Shingu; 180km (112 miles), allow one day

Wakayama Prefecture sits on the bulbous Kii Peninsula south of the Osaka-Kyoto conurbation and is the gateway to the misty forests of the Kumano Kodō pilgrimage trail.

The 100-plus-mile (160km) coastal road skirts Wakayama’s 16th-century feudal castle and the onsen (hot spring) resort town of Shirahama, where evening suns set behind the moon-shaped hole of Engetsu-tō Island. The toothy rock features and soaring cliffs of Kushimoto in the south will equally vie for your attention before the route culminates in Shingu on the Mie Prefecture border, where Kamikura Shrine marks the spot upon which Japan’s Shinto gods are said to have first descended to the earth.

9. Shikoku’s 88 Temples Pilgrimage

Best for meditative magic, secret surf spots and solitude Naruto – Sanuki; 1200km (745 miles), two weeks

It may seem antithetical to embark upon a pilgrimage on four wheels. But with 88 individual temples to discover along 1200 kilometers of terrain on the Shikoku Henro (Pilgrimage) – dedicated to the founder of Shingon Buddhism, Kōbō Daishi – you’re going to want all the help you can get.

Entering from Kōbe along the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, the world’s longest suspension bridge with a main span of two kilometers, is recommended for jaw-dropping sea-to-coast vistas. The temple route traverses all four Shikoku prefectures, passes through its most bustling port cities, and encourages plenty of stops for bucolic forest walks, onsen soaks and short temple sojourns.

Local tip: If you get lost, keep your eyes peeled for white-clothed pilgrims replete with bamboo walking sticks trudging along the roadsides.

10. Tsushima

Best for remote historic sites and isolated beauty Cape Tsutsu – Kankoku Observatory; 70km (43 miles), 1-2 days

Limited access to public transport and an abundance of lush coastal scenery make Tsushima perfect for exploring on a road trip. The titular island set the scene for the critically acclaimed 2020 PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima .

Though only 43 miles (70km) north-to-south, the small island bisecting the Korea Strait is teeming with natural and manmade wonders: the Kaneda Fortress ruins, the lonely Watatsumi Shrine, islet-littered Asō Bay, and the Korean-style Kankoku Observatory on the island’s northern tip, which, on a clear day, provides views of Busan in South Korea . Day hikers can summit one of Tsushima's forested peaks, while its rivers and beaches offer plenty of inviting spots to relax along your island drive.

Explanation of tour not detailed effectively. TOKYO Tickets for Hakone from Tokyo. (Romance train). Unclear of necessary tickets and no information relayed. ie a freepass was required for platform entry. A representative was expected for information re transport difficulties due to language barriers and an insight into the tour. We only got a package delivered to the hotel and never saw a representative. TRAIN JRP information not clear. ie could not book tickets from other stations and ticket sale needed to be from the actual departure station. Wasted time queuing twice for two hours. Name spelled wrong on one persons JRP. Ticket office were not going to issue the JRP and we had to argue it was a misspelling. Another delay. We appreciate it was a semi independent tour but could have done it ourselves. We joined a tour purposely to be more organised for us with clearer instructions. Tour guides for 2 half days only although it stated 1 full day and a half day. Only visited the Golden Temple and castle. Guide left us at the palace. If we had not purchased a remote WIFI at the airport for maps and translating we would have struggled to get around. Price did not match tour inadequacy. As you were informed prior to the tour, we were not staying overnight in Osaka. Was this reflected in the price? POSITIVES Previous Touradour TOURS I booked were excellent with efficient organisation and support. However, this was lacking the guidance. Tour guides were lovely people. If you fancy great views of Mt Fuji on your road trip, the Izu Skyline in Shizuoka may be just what you are looking for. This 40.6 km long toll road leads from hot spring city Atami in the north of the Izu Peninsula to the highlands of Amagi Kogen in the middle of the peninsula. Besides Mt Fuji, you will have nice views of the ocean on the eastern side, and the route is especially nice in spring with the blossoms and during the fall foliage season .

The best way to enjoy the fertile volcanic landscape surrounding Mt. Aso on the southern island Kyushu is to drive the Milk Road slowly while taking in the nice vistas. With grassy plains that stretch into the distance, there are multiple parking areas where you can stop to admire the views from up close. Make sure to go all the way up to the Daikanbo lookout, which is the highlight of the drive. Please note that the road may be closed due to icy conditions in the winter and that the crater of the volcano is only accessible when it is not too active.

Nikko is a very popular destination for local as well as international tourists. Only 1.5 hours away from the north of Tokyo , visitors flock there to see the impressive Toshogu shrine and temples surrounding the shrine area. The nature around Nikko is also very beautiful boasting waterfalls , forests, and a large lake , and the road that you can’t miss on your trip is called the Irohazaka Winding Road. Named after the Japanese alphabet that consists of 48 syllables, this curvy road has 48 hairpin turns and offers amazing views on the way up and down. At the top, don’t forget to visit the scenic Kegon Falls that you can go down to with an elevator.

Ehime prefecture on pilgrim’s island of Shikoku is especially famous for Dogo Onsen , one of the most picturesque onsen towns in Japan. Driving in Shikoku is also a pleasure, as it is the least populated island of the 4 main islands of Japan, the roads tend to be fairly quiet. To get there you can either depart from Kochi or Matsuyama, and the drive will take around 2 hours. The karst is a geological formation with wide grasslands interspersed with white limestone mounds and sinkholes. The area is surrounded by mountains and is located at an elevation of around 1400 meters. There are various hiking trails, and every season there is something to enjoy. If you stick around until nightfall, you can see starry skies undisturbed by any artificial light.

Nagano is one of Japan’s most mountainous regions, so it is no wonder that there are some scenic routes in this prefecture in the middle of Japan’s Honshu island. The Venus Line that runs between Chino and Ueda is a mountain road that leads you past highlands where there are various wildflowers blooming, two scenic lakes, and a plateau at a nearly 2 km altitude that offers sprawling views over the area including Mt Fuji. Many drivers like to stay the night in one of the onsen hotels in the area, which is a perfect way to relax at the end of the day. Please note that parts of the road are closed when there is snow, so it is best to drive the Venus Line between the late spring and early autumn .

The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge that spans between Kobe and Awaji Island near Shikoku is the second longest suspension bridge in the world at 4 km long. Besides driving over this bridge to enjoy the view, it is fun to stop at the Kobe side and walk the Maiko Marine Platform that offers you views from the inside and the ocean and the Bridge Information Center where you can learn more about suspension bridges. Goshiki Beach on Awaji Island is also worth a stop, especially around sunset time. If you continue on until Shikoku you can see the famous Naruto whirlpools , a rare natural phenomenon that is especially pronounced at this location.

If you are in the mood for a long road trip between late spring and late autumn, the Bandai-Azuma Skyline in Fukushima is a perfect destination. As the name Skyline already suggests, the road is located at a higher altitude of up to 1622 meters. You will sometimes drive through the clouds and will pass by various landscapes that include forests that are especially spectacular in autumn, as well as volcanic landscapes. The Fudosawa Bridge has amazing views, and if you want to hike near an active volcano you should make a stop at Mt. Issai Kyosan.

The northern island Hokkaido is famous for its wild natural beauty, and is therefore a much-loved destination for nature photographers. One of the best and easiest ways to get around the island is by car, and if you are looking for cool road trip destinations from Sapporo , Roller Coast Road and Patchwork Road are some of the best. Rollercoaster Road in the famous Furano and Biei area is a 2.5 km stretch of straight road that goes up and down like a rollercoaster. The wide views with the Tokachi-dake mountain range in the distance make it a thrilling ride! The Patchwork Road between National Routes 237 and 452 is also located in Biei and features country roads divided by colorful fields.

On the southwestern coast of Honshu in Yamaguchi prefecture you can find the Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge that leads to the small but scenic island Tsunoshima . The views of the cobalt-blue and emerald green ocean are not unlike those in Okinawa , and on the other side of the bridge you can enjoy several white sandy beaches. The bridge is 1.5 km long so you will have plenty of time to admire the beautiful views.

Only a little over one hour away from Tokyo is hot spring resort town Hakone that is also famous for its lake views with Mt. Fuji in the background. The Hakone Hill Turnpike is a favorite among drivers of sports cars because of the many sharp turns and the very nice views of Mt. Fuji and Sagami Bay. You can even see marks on the road to show you what is the best line to take. The road ascends more than 1000 meters, and it will take you past forests, tunnels and bridges so there is plenty to take in while enjoying the drive.

Nissan plans self-driving taxi service in Japan

Nissan

Nissan is planning to launch a self-driving taxi service in Japan in the financial year starting April 2027, the auto giant said Wednesday.

The company said it will begin trials of the commercial service in the upcoming financial year from April, using minivans in an area of Yokohama, south of Tokyo.

"Local communities have been facing several mobility challenges, such as driver shortages, which are a result of an ageing population," Nissan said in a statement.

It plans to work with local authorities and transport operators on the venture to "provide a broad range of new services that enable free movement".

Japan is far from the only place with autonomous vehicles on the roads, but its government has set acceleration of the technology as a key priority as it faces labour shortages and an ageing population in need of transport.

Since last year, road traffic laws have allowed "Level 4" self-driving vehicles to operate on public roads in certain circumstances. Vehicle autonomy is classified along a scale from 0-5, with 5 indicating essentially total autonomy.

Nissan says it has been "testing business models for self-driving mobility services in Japan and abroad since 2017".

Last year, its rival Honda, US auto giant General Motors and GM's autonomous driving unit Cruise announced they will establish a joint venture which will begin a driverless ride service in Japan in early 2026.

Toyota is also planning a pilot project using automated vehicles in the Odaiba area of Tokyo from July, a spokesman told AFP.

From 2025 Toyota plans to launch a paid service and expand it to other districts of central Tokyo, in what will be likely be Japan's first automated driving service on public roads with other vehicles, the Yomiuri daily reported this month.

"We are working with related stakeholders to discuss various aspects of future automated driving (including the level of automated driving), but details have not yet been finalised," the spokesman said.

Host to the Winter Olympics in 1998, the ski resorts in Japanese alps compares favourably with the best resorts in Europe and North America. With a staggering 11m of snowfall annually (almost 4 times snowfall of leading resorts in the French Alps) there are more fresh tracks to be had and more bumper powder days to enjoy that most could resorts dream of. Only its competitor resort Niseko in the north Island of Japan can beat Hakuba in terms of regular powder snowfall. But, whilst Niseko may get heavier snowfall, the 10 resorts side by side in the Hakuba valley (sharing a common All-Mountain lift pass and with free shuttle buses between each) offer a more compelling range of terrain and slopes to explore.

Nissan plans self-driving mobility service in Japan from FY 2027

KYODO NEWS

Nissan Motor Co. said Wednesday it plans to offer mobility services using Level 4 self-driving vehicles from fiscal 2027 in Japan, including rural areas where providing financially sustainable public transportation is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Japanese automaker will begin a trial service in Yokohama, where the company is based, during the fiscal year from April and expand it in stages using 20 or so vehicles before the start of commercial services, it said.

In the trials, Nissan will use Serena minivans equipped with self-driving technologies, with a driver aboard to respond to any emergencies. Those wishing to use the service will be able to reserve in advance through a smartphone app.

"We want to support Japan's future mobility needs using Japanese technologies. We are aiming for sustainable services," Kazuhiro Doi, vice president of research, told reporters.

Honda Motor Co. and General Motors Co. said in October they will launch a driverless taxi service joint venture that will be operational by early 2026 in Tokyo.

Kyushu Hot Springs and Nature Self-Drive Tour

7 nights | 8 days.

Kyushu is Japan’s third largest island, famous for its hot springs, active volcanoes, lush greenery, delicious food, relaxed lifestyle and friendly people.

Kyushu is a land of energy, from its vibrant people to its famous volcanoes. Rich volcanic soil and regular rainfall have contributed to the region’s reputation as a gourmet destination, famous for its citrus fruits, seafood, and rich, pork-based ramen.

The people of Kyushu live in harmony with nature’s power. It’s an exciting landscape that exists nowhere else, of wide plains, relaxing beaches, active volcanoes, dramatic calderas and abundant hot springs.

Thanks to Kyushu’s warm climate, bountiful seas and rich soil, this is an island of abundance, famous for its food.

The beauty of driving in Kyushu – not only is it easy – you drive on the left, most road signs are in English as well as Japanese, but Japanese drivers are ridiculously courteous and it’s less populated than other parts of Japan

Day 1: Hakata Arrival

Hakata is the biggest city in Kyushu, the final station of Shinkansen from Tokyo. This huge port city was the main gate of Japan for people from other countries since the ancient era. Temples and shrines that enshrine the gods of the sea and the safety of sail are popular destinations. Also, people in Japan appreciate Hakata as a Mecca of food, ramen, Motsunabe hotpot, and yakitori are all local specialties of this city. We recommend you try as many of these as you can.

Accommodation in Hakata

Day 2: Dazaifu-Tenmangu Shrine & Ureshino Onsen (Saga)

After picking up your car hire, we’ll drive for 30 minutes to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. This biggest shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture is worshiped by people as a shrine of study. Before the entrance exams of universities or high schools, many students visit the god of learning enshrined in Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine to make a wish to pass their exams. In addition, around the temple is a traditional shopping street, you’ll enjoy the traditional sweets and goods there.

Afternoon will drive for around one hour to Ureshino Onsen town. Ureshino, one of the largest onsen towns in Kyushu, has some local specialties such as food or ceramics work, and the onsen is known as one of the top three onsen for beautiful skin because of the chemicals contained in these hot springs.

Accommodation in Ureshino Onsen

Day 3: Mt. Unzen & Unzen Onsen

Today will travel to a large volcano and onsen (1hr). In Unzen City, you’ll experience of power of volcanic nature with your body. The ropeway or observatory will make you see the spectacular nature of the mountain, Unzen Jigoku, the springs gushing onsen water, will show you the dynamics of natural hot springs, and you can also enjoy the local food making use of this onsen hot water, onsen tamago which is a soft boiled egg with the onsen steam. Other than the onsen attractions, Unzen has some traditional handiworks. Crafts of glass or pottery in this city have been loved by people since the techniques arrived from overseas.

Accommodation in Unzen

Day 4: Kumamoto Castle & Mt. Aso

Take a car ferry to Kumamoto City (30 mins). The Kumomoto’s must-see is obviously Kumamoto Castle. This castle is classified as one of the three castles in Japan because of its functions of defence and the beauty of the main tower. The high stone wall preventing the castle from invasion and secret tunnels are one of the interesting functions of defence. The highlight of the castle would be the golden hall called Shokun no Ma in the main palace. The walls of the main palace are filled with golden paintings depicting Wang Zhaojun, a court lady of the Han dynasty in China.

In the afternoon, we’ll drive to one of the biggest calderas in the world, Mt. Aso. It is the only mountain where we can see the volcanic crater with the marks of eruption.

Accommodation in Aso

self driving tour japan

Day 5: Takachiho & Kurokawa Onsen

Today, we’ll go for a village of myth (1.5 hrs). The reasons why Takachiho is called so are the shrines and the surrounding nature where many Japanese mythologies developed. The gorge and the shrines are the most popular attractions for tourists. Ancient people thought that the gods existed in nature with sacred atmospheres and built shrines among the sacred nature to enshrine those gods. This is why most of shrines in Japan are located in steep mountains or deep in gorges. This area is probably quite difficult to reach with public transportation.

After being empowered by sacred nature and the gods, take a further drive to another onsen town. Approximately 1 hour driving will take you to Kurokawa Onsen. This onsen town has a unique style and idea that “this whole town is the one hotel”. You can soak in three different baths out of 28 with each feature and function.

Accommodation in Kurokawa Onsen

self driving tour japan

Day 6: Yufuin Onsen

Until the last day, we’ll visit a lot of hot springs. Many onsen fans in Japan travel on this route. About 1-hour drive from Kurokawa onsen, Yufuin is one of the most well-known onsen towns in the island of the onsen kingdom, Kyushu. The outstanding feature of Yufuin among numerous hot spring villages is the traditional Japanese townscape. The sightseeing hansom cab in this town is popular among tourists, you can see around the Japanese gardens and architecture.

Accommodation in Yufuin Onsen

self driving tour japan

Day 7: Beppu Onsen

We’ll drive 1 hour from Yufuin Onsen Town to one of the most popular onsen resorts in Japan, Beppu Onsen Town. The way you enjoy the onsen in Beppu is not only soaking in the bath. Jigoku Meguri, which is a 7-onsen sightseeing tour, is a highly recommended attraction to experience in Beppu. You can visit the seven hot springs with each story and uniqueness, one is beautiful cobalt blue, and another one is mud hot spring, for instance. Other than the onsen tour, you can experience cooking with onsen steam, pudding, pork bun, or seafood. Of course you can also stay in a hotel with a hot spring, and soak in the onsen until you get satisfied with Japanese hot spring culture.

Accommodation in Beppu Onsen

Day 8: Return to Hakata & Transfer to Tokyo

Go back to Hakata on your self-drive and return the car hire at Hakata Station, and transfer back to Tokyo or your next destination. Of course you can stay a night if there remain some foods to try in Hakata. Tempura, udon noodles, and seafood are also recommended in Hakata.

Uber Eats starts robot deliveries in Tokyo

"Caution: robot!" chirps the green self-driving delivery vehicle as it trundles down the street to a pork cutlet restaurant in Tokyo to pick up a meal ordered on Uber Eats.

Starting Wednesday, robot deliveries will be offered in a small area of the city by the U.S.-based food app, which hopes to eventually roll out the service more widely in Japan.

The country, facing growing labor shortages, changed traffic laws last year to allow delivery robots on public streets, and other companies including Panasonic are also trialling cute new machines to transport goods.

Uber Eats' boxy robots have square headlights for eyes and three wheels on each side to navigate kerbs as they calculate routes on their own, using sensors to avoid pedestrians and other obstacles.

Moving at up to 5.4 kilometers an hour and with flashing lights around the lid, there's a human operator on standby in case of trouble.

Like self-driving delivery services launched by the company in North America, the Tokyo robots will be limited in scope at first, said Uber Eats executive Alvin Oo.

App users must wait outside for the robot to arrive, but one day it could come to their door, he told AFP on Tuesday.

"Going all the way to the office floor, to the exact apartment... could be useful in somewhere like high-rise Tokyo," said Oo, market operations director at Uber Eats Japan.

The service could also one day come to rural areas, where many residents are elderly and drivers are scarce, he added.

Current drivers "do not need to worry", Oo said, because "even in five, 10 years' time, there will always be work for the human delivery partners on the platform".

Uber Eats and similar apps faced strikes last month, and rideshare giant Uber has long been criticized for dodging minimum wage and holiday pay rules by arguing its workers are not employees but independent contractors.

The Uber Eats robots, developed with Mitsubishi Electric and U.S. start-up Cartken, will deliver food from just a few restaurants in the busy Nihonbashi district at first.

Users cannot choose robot delivery, and if it is selected for them they can accept or decline the offer.

At a demonstration on Tuesday, the robot nearly collided with a pedestrian, but also attracted lots of attention.

It's "so cute, so eye-catching", said passer-by Akemi Hayakawa. "I thought it might bump into people's feet, but people give way to it," the 60-year-old said.

"Japan has an aging, dwindling population, with a serious labour shortage. So this is a very good idea for Japan too."

The uneven road surface and uneven crowded footpaths will provide a major challenge for these robots! Then also some idiot human will do crazy things to these robots and the food inside and upload it on social media thinking that they’ve achieved such a big thing…assholes losers and their social media uploads!

This old chestnut again.

Or could it be that the many deliverers were agitating for better working conditions, many of whom as you could see around Tokyo were foreigners looking for side hustles with their own precarious contract labor?

It is not only Tokyo though, the old stomping grounds of Fairfax VA are also getting a rollout.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/tech/uber-eats-to-roll-out-self-driving-robot-chefs-in-tokyo/articleshow/107889521.cms?from=mdr

Probably will do well in Tokyo and their will be no robot harassment and theft.

Many deliverers are in vulnerable situations and will be feeling the pinch, but that is your late stage capitalism.

This is great, we're slowly inching towards those unmanned aerial taxis that can transport cargo and even humans from point a to point b quicker. I was sick recently and decided to try uber eats to avoid going outside. Two simple meals and a side were going to cost 6000 yen after all the fees and mark ups. The workers are underpaid, the customers are price gouged and the food is usually cold and sweaty. Why do people use it? It's not even like it's a good treat to have once in a while, it's always cold garbage. I don't see how this could possibly help with the aging population as the article suggests as I'd imagine 6000 yen would be equal to or more than the weekly food budget of most elderly pensioners.

Me think that do not work well.

At a demonstration on Tuesday, the robot nearly collided with a pedestrian [...] "I thought it might bump into people's feet, but people give way to it,"

According to the article it does not seems people choosing to accept robot delivery will get a discount. I so love all the thing to face the supposedly labor shortage (in Tokyo, sure) result in increasing pressure on collectivity/customer but income for company. At least this one is honest in the fact that addressing the actual labor shortage issue in remote area is just going to be a potential after thought :

The service could also one day come to rural areas, where many residents are elderly and drivers are scarce,

Most likely will never come if not heavily subsided by government as not profitable enough. It could be good if government actually play their card the other way round.

I have started to see some of these automated drones in central downtown areas of certain major cities in the US. The did not all appear to be delivering food. The radius according to the information provided to me was small. Also, the pace is slow. If it is delivering supplies or special printouts from and office store, then time will not be a major factor, but the deliveries need to be near buy or Uber will need to have stations setup everywhere. This may mean that the price for these stations will be passed on to the customer. Therefore, no discounts with option to increase prices in the future depending changing costs.

I believe the accidents will mostly involve bicycles. They may be intentional or unintentional. Next, elderly, drunks, the mentally ill, the financially strapped, and Youtubers will also target these bots.
