More on Jabalpur Travel

The marble empire, arts and culture, history of jabalpur - a journey back in time.

The city of Jabalpur has witnessed several historical events, memoirs in which transports a tourist back in time and is sure to fuel the explorer within. Jabalpur is said to be named after saint Jabali Rishi. In Arabic, the word Jabal means mountains. So there is a possibility that the name of the city is also derived from here. This city was the capital of Tripura Kingdom in the 10th century and was ruled by the Hayahya. Many relics from the reign of King Ashoka were discovered in here.

In the 16th century, the city was ruled by the Gonds and then taken over by the Marathas in the 17th century. The British defeated the Marathas in the 19th century and made Jabalpur the headquarter of Nerbudda territories. It also became the capital of Saugor which is the present-day Sagar District and Nerbudda District. After Independence, the cantonment in the city was dedicated to army training and a vehicle factory and a gun carriage factory were also established.

Once a part of the Gond empire, the history of Jabalpur, inspired by figures like Rani Durgavati, is strong evidence of the strength of Indian women. Jabalpur not only mesmerizes us through the beauty of the Kalachuri art and unique constructions like the Madan Mahal Fort but also reminds of the sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi whose remains were immersed in the Narmada in Tilwara Ghat amidst pure marble on both sides.

According to the most popular legend, the meaning of the name "Jabalpur" is said to have been named after the sage Jabali, who is thought to have meditated on the banks of the Narmada. In Arabic, Jabal refers to a rocky landscape.

PLACES TO VISIT IN JABALPUR

Here are some of the most visited and famous places in Jabalpur that should be on your list while visiting the heart of India.

Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat

The sacred Banganga-Narmada confluence is located in the small village of Bhedaghat. The name Bhedaghat comes from the word "bheda" which the local people associate with the existence of sangam (confluence).

For many years, the location served as a sacred site for various rites. It was formerly called Bhairava ghati and served as a tantrik peeth. According to legend, this is where the well-known sage Bhrigu spent many years worshipping Lord Shiva.

The Marble Rocks of Bhedaghat soar high in sparkling splendor, rising to 100 feet on both sides of the river Narmada. The bright whiteness occasionally has pink, blue, and azure veins running across it. The river here flows silently between the tall cliffs of magnesium limestone, which the Imperial Gazetteer refers to as "the tortuous gorge of white marble." The natural beauty of this place can move anyone with the serene views, sun gleaming on the marble-white pinnacles and its dappled shadows on the clear waters.

Chausath Yogini Temple

The Chausath Yogini Temple is built on the hilltop and is approached by a wide flight of steps formed from the remains that were here before the Yogini Temple was built.

The temple is a circular building partially open to the sky, with eighty-one peripheral chapels housing images of the sixty-four yoginis and other deities. It was constructed by the Kalachuri king Yuvarajadeva I in the 10th century.

A tall, circular wall encircles the temple which emphasizes its grandeur making it one of the most visited tourist places in Jabalpur. It is the largest yogini temple in India, with an exterior circumference of 41m.

Balancing Rock Formation

The Balancing Rock formations in Jabalpur are essentially eroded from volcanic rock formations and have also withstood earthquakes of a Richter scale magnitude of up to 6.5. As per locals, nothing can disturb the equilibrium of these rocks. The area is surrounded by picturesque hillocks and makes great natural retreat for visitors. The rocks lie very close to the Madan Mahal Fort in Deotal. It is a popular selfie point among the tourists with backgrounds of these interesting rock formations.

Madan Mahal

On top of a hill, Madan Mahal or Rani Durgavati Fort served as one of the military strongholds till the 11th century. This fort has a significant architecture and is often visited by local tourists. You should make this one of your stops while exploring Jabalpur and take your time admiring the magnificent architecture.

Kachnar City Shiva Temple

One of the tallest statues of Lord Shiva, this temple has made Kachnar City a popular tourist and religious destination. The statue is 23 metres (76 feet) tall and sits on top of a cavern housing replicas of Shiva Lingams, or "Jyotirlingas." The 12 Jyotirlinga can be found in the caverns below Lord Shiva's statue. Regular ritual of evening Aarti is performed before the statue, however one should not miss to visit the place during Makar Sankranti.

Dumna Nature Park

Dumna Nature Reserve Park is a place to get in the lap of nature in Jabalpur. The Khandari Dam, located 10 km from Jabalpur, is close to the nature reserve, and spreads over an area of 1058 hectares.

Travellers adore spending time in the area to see wild creatures in their natural surroundings. Dumna National Reserve Park continues to flourish throughout the year, but you can preferably visit during monsoon season to witness lush green surroundings.

Waterfalls near Jabalpur

Dhuandhar fall.

The word "Dhuandhar" means stream of smoke. Here, the Narmada River departs its broad course and plunges spectacularly into the valley below, dropping from a height of 30 feet (9 metres). The name, "Dhuandhar," derives from the strength of the plummet, which causes water droplets to ascend in a concentrated mass that gives the appearance of smoke or vapour.

The amount of water is such that it gushes down with a roar even in winter when monsoons have passed. The best viewpoint is from the three lookouts constructed just atop the falls. It's an experience unlike any other to be standing next to the falls, seeing the water pour down, and hearing it roar. You can drive up to the falls or descend from the closest bridge. A ropeway to the falls has been built, offering a magnificent view from the top making it one of the best waterfalls near Jabalpur.

Bhadbhada Waterfalls

A stunning place, Bhadbhada Waterfall is located in Jamtara hamlet, 17 km east of Jabalpur. Reaching the waterfall typically takes 43 minutes and it is also quite close to Bhopal. It is a wonderful location for photography and cinematography. It is a popular tourist destination and has beautiful scenery.

You can plan your stay at Kalchuri Residency   (Contact: 0761 - 2678491/92). The fall is situated at a distance of approximately 10 km from the hotel, which can be reached with a rented can from the property itself.

Nidan Falls

The Nidan waterfall trickles down on the rocks from a high altitude and it is located 30 km from Jabalpur. The waterfall is a beautiful sight to behold because of the way the rocks are naturally arranged to obstruct the water's harsh flow. You can walk to the falls, which are about a km from the main road. Although it is excellent year-round, the monsoon season offers the most beautiful scenery (July to September). It is approx. 43 km away from Kalchuri Residency and can be reached within an hour.

Ghughra Fall

The Ghughra falls is situated on the banks of the River Narmada, almost 17 km from Jabalpur city. The waterfall is situated in shallow water, and the water gushes through the rocks while flowing quickly. As the water gathers in a central area, the waterfall's shape becomes slightly arched inside, giving the water's flow an attractive look.

There are many offbeat places in and around Jabalpur to explore. Here are some of them.

The Madhya Pradesh government established it in 1983 for the purpose of displaying and preserving the fossils, which were found in remains of several prehistoric species discovered in the state's numerous excavations. Despite its small size, the park is covered in floral fossils that date from roughly 40 to 150 million years ago making it an interesting place to visit near Jabalpur. These fossils are scattered across the park's seven villages in the Mandla District (Ghuguwa, Umaria, Deorakhurd, Barbaspur, Chanti-hills, Chargaon and Deori Kohani).

Jabalpur city is the administrative headquarters of Jabalpur district, the second-most-populous district in the state. Jabalpur is famous for the marble rocks found on the banks of the Narmada in Bhedaghat. The city is also regarded as a major education centre in India and home to the terracotta cottage industry and Chanderi silk industry.

The Narmada River forms an important part of the city’s geography. It is also the primary source of water for the city and its neighbouring areas. Apart from Narmada, the Vanganga and Hiran rivers also flow through the city, adding to its natural beauty. The region is a treasure trove of naturally occurring rich mineral deposits like limestone, iron ore, bauxite, manganese. The rugged landscape with craggy hills and cliffs also gives rise to a host of torrential waterfalls that make for a stunning view.

Jabalpur

Legends say that the town is named after the sage Jabali, who was said to meditate on the banks of the Narmada. There is also a belief that the name of the city comes from the Arabic word, Jabal, meaning huge boulders, due to the huge marble rocks found on the river banks.

The earliest historical records of Jabalpur date back to the time of Ashoka, owing to relics found in Rupnath, about 48KM from the present city location. Jabalpur has been ruled by many dynasties including, but not limited to the Satavahana dynasty, Kalachuri dynasty, Gondwana rulers, Marathas, Mughals, and finally, the British East India Company, before the country’s independence. In the colonial era, the city was referred to as Jubbulpore. In 2006, the city’s municipal corporation renamed the city Jabalpur.

Situated atop the hills, this 10 th century Chausath Yogini Temple is a glowing example of ancient architecture. Circular in shape with a diameter of 125-feet, the temple attracts worshippers in abundance. Images placed on its pedestals can be associated to three different periods – a particular type of images belongs to the Kushana Period, the other to post-Gupta Period, and the third set belongs to Kalachuri style that existed between 10 th century and 13 th century. Also, one needs to climb a whopping 108steep steps to reach the temple.

Chausath means the digit sixty-four in English and the name has a direct relation to the structure of the temple. There are exactly 64 carved figures of Yoginis, each one in her own designated shrine, skirting the interiors of the circular premises of the temple. As a bonus, the panoramic view of the mighty Narmada from the high open courtyard presents to you an endearing scene to be captured in the camera as well as to be remembered in the mind.

Once you reach the premises of the temple, you will realize the immense significance of the Yoga tantric beliefs. This is also the only place where you will find the grandest couple of Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati riding the symbolic Nandi Bull. The idols of Shiv-Parvati stand in the Gauri-Shankar Temple, which is in the centre of the temple. This is believed to have been built at a later time than the original temple with Yoginis.

From temples to marble mountains to lakes and dams, Jabalpur has a lot to offer to the discerning tourist. So, make sure you boom your stay in advance and plan a trip when the weather is pleasant.

Situated at a height of 500 meters, the fort offers an excellent view of Jabalpur.

4. Balancing Rocks

Balancing Rock

On your way up to the fort, you will come across the Balancing Rock , which is a huge rock on a small base. The precarious position of the rock makes you doubt your eyes. The rock had not shifted even when there was an earthquake of 6.5 magnitudes. Geologists state that the rocks are one and not two. It is said that it was one sandstone rock dating back to millions of years. With the passage of time, it has weathered to look like two. The theory apart, Balancing Rocks is worth the visit.

chausat-yogini-temple

You need to climb 108 steep steps to reach the temple.

9. Pisanhari Ki Madiya

Pisanhari Ki Madiya is an important pilgrim center of followers of Jainism. It is said that the temple was built about 500 years ago by a poor lady after hearing the preaches of Jain monks. The lady earned her living by grinding wheat flour using grinding stones. Since the lady did not have the money for placing gold pots on temple tower, she placed her grinding stones on top. The act of sacrificing the only income source she had made people call the temple Pisanhari Ki Madiya. Pisanhari means woman who prepares wheat flour using manually operated stone mill.

10. Bastar Palace

Bastar Palace , also called as Jagdalpur Palace is one of the most frequented tourist destinations in Jabalpur. The carvings on the walls and ceilings are exquisite. In the district of Jabalpur lies the magnificent Dhuandhar Falls, an immense attraction that draws countless tourists. These stunning falls cascade down a height of 30 meters, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The renowned Narmada River gracefully flows past the marble-like falls, narrowing and then plunging forcefully, giving birth to the majestic Dhuandhar Falls. Sighting platforms have been thoughtfully constructed along the side to offer optimal viewpoints, but it is important to heed the guardrails and not cross them. Beneath the water’s surface lies a bed of white and grey marble rocks, intensifying the ethereal pale hue of the waterfall. Just grab some delectable food, gather your loved ones or friends, and savor a memorable experience amidst the scenic splendor.
