A lot of people tend to classify the Caribbean as luxurious and expensive. But fewer people know about some of the cheapest Caribbean islands to visit.

The Caribbean is such an amazing place and also somewhere that’s so popular with so many people around the world. However, it’s also a favourite with honeymoons, elaborate cruises and special anniversaries.

Whilst the Caribbean certainly can be both of those things, what if I told you, that you can visit for a lot cheaper than you might expect? Even if you’re not looking to wine and dine, you shouldn’t put off visiting the islands and it’s definitely worth knowing the cheapest Caribbean islands to visit.

Although it doesn’t quite come with a backpacker’s budget associated with Southeast Asia, with a little research you can visit these islands affordably.

What is The Cheapest Caribbean Island to Visit?

So, without further ado, here are some of the best cheap Caribbean destinations to add to your tropical bucket list. Whether you want history, marine life, or simply to relax on a bright white beach, these cheap islands to visit will give you the perfect Caribbean vacation.

Mexico is a country with an incredibly rich history. Ancient Mayan culture dominates a lot of their past and you can also find one of the 7 Wonders of the World near Cancun.

Cozumel is a little island off the coast of Playa del Carmen. It’s fairly undeveloped (one of the reasons it’s one of the cheapest Caribbean islands to visit) so will be a massive hit with anyone who’s not a huge fan of over-touristy destinations.

Famous for its scuba diving, coral reefs, wonderful marine life, Mayan ruins and, super relaxed vibe, you’re sure to have a great time in Cozumel.

Top Tip: Although you can get flights from both the UK and the US, you can save yourself hundreds by getting a flight to Cancun and then taking a bus to Playa del Carmen and a ferry to Cozumel. In total, the journey will take about 2 hours, so it may not work depending on your schedule. but if you have a little time to kill, why not turn it into a multi-destination trip and spend a couple of days in Cancun first? It’s worth doing just to visit Chichen Itza.

Jamaica is my all-time favourite tropical island the place to go if you’re looking for a cultural escape.

The island is mostly known for its chilled-out vibe, reggae music, fiery food, and great nightlife. But you’ll also find that it’s a great destination for eco lovers with plenty of stunning scenery, white sand beaches, waterfalls, and secret coves.

There are plenty of affordable inclusive resorts, especially in Ocho Rio or Negril and you can also find cheap direct flights to Kingston or Montego Bay. Be sure to visit the Bob Marley Museum while you’re there and experience the true Rastafarian culture.

3. Barbados

Barbados is a small island near St Lucia and the Grenadines. It’s a wonderful destination for a relaxing Caribbean break.

An independent British Commonwealth nation, Barbados is an extremely family-friendly island, plus, Crane Beach is said to be one of the best beaches in the Caribbean!

As well as exploring the pristine beaches you can explore stunning limestone caverns and caves, and swim with sea turtles. If you’re interested in history you can see the impressive parliament building and the Nidhe Israel Synagogue, a UNESCO Site and one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere. Of course, you can also simply relax under the palm trees with a cocktail (or 2!).

4. Dominican Republic 

The Dominican Republic is an excellent choice for a cheap island holiday, as it is frequently reported to be the cheapest Caribbean island to visit by other travellers.

There’s a total of 8 airports in the Dominican Republic which makes it an incredibly accessible destination from anywhere in the world. There are some wonderful all-inclusive resorts and it’s also an adventure lover’s paradise.

There’s snorkelling, zip-lining, water sports, ATV buggy adventures through the jungle and cave swimming, as well as colonial history, tropical rainforests and stunning waterfalls.

5. Puerto Rico

There’s so much more to do in Puerto Rica than lazing about on a beautiful beach. Trek stunning mountainous landscapes, explore the colourful street life and go for an adventure in the El Yunque rainforest.

San Juan is the largest city on the island; it’s like a miniature tropical Las Vegas with its hotel strip, bars and casinos and is super popular with younger travellers.

For something a little more sophisticated, there’s also the old town to explore with its gorgeous ocean-view fortress and European-style cobblestone streets.

As well as the soft, sandy beaches that you’d expect from a Caribbean island, you can also visit the Port of Spain and learn about some of the fascinating colonial histories, see a range of colourful birds (such as bright pink herons or tiny hummingbirds) at the wildlife sanctuaries, go island hopping and visit picturesque coves and natural beauty of the hidden bays.

Trinidad and Tobago are also known for their delicious food and it goes without saying, that that’s another great excuse to go!

9. Saint Lucia

St Lucia is a volcanic island with a pair of dramatic mountains called The Pitons (pictured below) on its west coast. You may not think of this place as being one of the cheapest Caribbean islands to visit, but if you know how to plan it, it can be much more affordable than you think.

Home to many all-inclusive resorts (some with incredible mountainous views), gorgeous beaches, volcanic landscapes, including the world’s only drive-through volcano , wonderful marine life, port towns and fishing villages and much more. If you’re looking for the perfect chance to explore the white sand beaches, swim in the clear waters, and attend festivals and events, the dry season is your best bet. As one of the most popular Caribbean cheapest places to travel, Jamaica is surprisingly affordable for many travelers around the world.

Nature-lovers looking for an adventure will find plenty to do in Jamaica, from zip-lining through their gorgeous rainforest to swimming in their bright blue, towering waterfalls. Some special places to discover while in Jamaica are the Bob Marley Museum and Rastafari Indigenous Village. This tropical island offers a perfect escape from everyday life. When you stop in, make sure to check out the world-famous local food trucks, colorful Dutch-inspired architecture, top-secret snorkel spots, and unparalleled hidden beaches. You will not struggle to find a hotel or resort offering competitive nightly rates here in Curaçao. The 10 Cheapest Tourist Destinations In The Caribbean

Everyone deserves a chance to lounge on breathtaking white-sand beaches, sip fruity cocktails while floating in crystal-clear water, and explore palm tree-studded, tropical streets—that’s why we’ve compiled a list of the 10 most affordable tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Keep in mind, the best time to visit these destinations for the lower prices is mid-April to December. Now, grab your sunscreen and your bathing suit and get packing.

Dominican republic.

Although it’s still comparatively cheap to the rest of the Caribbean, costs in the Dominican Republic have recently been on the rise, so now is the best time to go. Thrifty travelers can live on around $40 per day if they live like the locals do. Things like car rentals and outdoor activity tours can rack up large amounts of money, but food and public transportation are very affordable. There are a number of reasonably priced beachfront resorts in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.

Puerto Rico

Trinidad and Tobago

One of your safest bets for a budget vacation is the beautiful coastlines of the dual-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, where you can slide by on around $80 per day. Tobago, though arguably more picturesque, tends to be more expensive than Trinidad. Avoid Carnival season (the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), when accommodation rates jump through the roof, sometimes more than 100 percent, and you’ll also find increased taxi fares, drink prices, and more.

The lovely lush coasts and urban bustle of Curaçao can be explored at a relatively cheap rate. Wander through Willemstad and try some of the local dining options in the Old Market (Marsche Bieuw). Try the fried plantains, polenta, and pumpkin pancakes for just a few dollars each. Amble in the Shete Boka National Park for $5.50, or just lounge on the soft, sandy shoreline under the shade of gently swaying palm trees at the island’s free beaches. To save money, avoid taxis, enjoy a barbecue on the beach, and try renting a room through Airbnb.

Nicknamed the Spice Island, you won’t have to worry about your wallet while you run around the cinnamon and nutmeg-scented air of Grenada. Inns, cottages, and lodges tend to be cheaper alternatives to hotels or resorts, coming in at around $40-70 per day for a room. There’s much to do on this island beyond sunbathing on the beach, though it’s easy to spend a whole day relaxing on Levera Beach. Explore the laid-back, fun city of Georgetown where you’ll find numerous restaurants, hotels, and local businesses.

U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of a group of islands located directly to the west of the British Virgin Islands—St. Croix (the largest), St. John (the most relaxed), St. Thomas (the most populated), and some other minor islands. Traveling between these islands can get pricey, but you can manage it for around $80 per day if you’re careful. Finding cheap hotels is the hardest part of budgeting here, but alternative accommodations like couch surfing, camping, and Airbnbs can bring down those costs considerably. Take shared taxis, cook your own meals, and make sure you don’t miss happy hour. Taking these extra steps means you can splurge on a few pricier activities like a snorkeling trip or a nice meal.

Sparkling turquoise water, a wild nightlife scene, scenic gardens—Barbados has all this and more, and you can easily visit the island on a budget. Stay in one of the guest houses to save on accommodation, and you’ll still be within minutes of the sea. The island’s buses are cheap and tend to be on time, and as for dining, you can always find fried fish and some local rum for a reasonable price. Spend your day frolicking in the cool water and playing in the sand—all of Barbados’ picturesque beaches are free to the public.

Explore the outdoors in St. Lucia. The sharp peaks of the iconic Pitons serve as a scenic, cheap day out (if you’re willing to hike up 2,600 feet). There are plenty of Caribbean Sea views along the way up, as well as wide-ranging plant life and waterfalls to look at. Stay in a guesthouse instead of a resort to save a few bucks, and dine out for lunch and snacks instead of dinner. Most activities on the island, aside from diving, are relatively cheap, and buses are the most affordable way to get around.

Jamaica is by no means an inherently cheap destination, but there are certainly ways to budget-travel your way through the island. Avoid the touristy bars and restaurants located around Kingston, Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios, and you can live on about $100 or less per day. Eat at local restaurants where a plate of jerk will cost around $3.50, take shared taxis or public transport, and negotiate on prices at roadside stalls, markets, taxis, and sometimes at hotels. If you can make do with basic accommodations, there are plenty of relatively cheap places to stay on the island.

The Bahamas

You don’t want to miss the extraordinary Bahamas, and luckily you don’t have to if you’re willing to make a few sacrifices. The beautiful shores are perfect year-round, and there is plenty more to do here than simply enjoying the beaches. Finding accommodations is the biggest hurdle to get around, but guesthouses and budget hotels are available for much less than touristy resorts, though their locations might not be as central. Affordable food can be found if you eat at local restaurants, avoid resort-area dining, and stick to local rum as your drink of choice. Biking is a fantastic alternative mode of transportation, though you may run into some less-desirable road conditions in the Out Islands.

SmaterTravel.com has compiled a list of the least expensive countries to visit in the Caribbean, and Jamaica is included. According to online fare tracker CheapOair, airfares to Kingston, Jamaica in the winter of 2019 average just $366 round trip, making the island nation a great value for travelers seeking a Caribbean holiday. Jamaica is a much-desired destination for eco-adventurers, but there is a wide range of activities and sites of interest for visitors. These include the Bob Marley Museum and the Rastafari Indigenous Village, in addition to its numerous excellent beaches sun-and-surf lovers. Hotel accommodations are affordable as well. Oyster.com, which is affiliated with SmarterTravel, reports that the average hotel rate in Jamaica totals $155 per night, and there are many options for less expensive hotels. The lowest rates are found between May and October, so this period is recommended for budget travelers. One of the accommodations recommended by the site: Marblue Villa Suites. The venue offers clean and colorful rooms in a beachfront location and rates under $125 per night. Another budget venue is the Westender Inn, which features an infinity pool with ocean views.

With dozens of luxurious all-inclusive resorts and some of the most popular attractions in the Caribbean, a trip to Jamaica  can be pricey. But it doesn’t have to be. 

Jamaica offers myriad experiences that don’t put a strain on your wallet, from free street dances to inexpensive concerts and stunning secluded rivers and beaches. Jamaicans have crafted their own cultural experiences and way of life that are both enriching and affordable. 

Here are the top tips on how to enjoy the best of Jamaica without draining your finances. 

Average daily costs in Jamaica

• Guesthouse/motel room: JM$5,000–$8,000
• Basic hotel room for two: JM$8,000–$15,000
• Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): JM$10,000–$25,000
• Public transportation (route taxis and buses): JM$200–300 per ride
• Coffee or tea: JM$200–$400
• Patty: JM$300-$500
• Bottled water: JM$100
• Lunch for two: JM$2,500-$3,500
• Dinner for two: JM$4,000-$5,000
• Beer at a bar: JM$400-$600

Average daily cost: JM$14,000-$23,000 per person for a basic room, plus three meals a day at low-end restaurants and inexpensive entertainment.

1. Stay at a low-budget hotel

Jamaica offers a range of different types of accommodations from luxury resorts to motels. Low-budget hotels are the middle ground: lesser-known, typically two- or three-star accommodations that provide basic amenities. 

Properties such as the Shirley Retreat Hotel in Kingston,  Toby’s Resort in Montego Bay,  Pineapple Court Hotel in Ochi Rios and Lashings Boutique Hotel in Treasure Beach are a step up from guesthouses and motels, but still extremely affordable. At most of these hotels, you’ll also be able to get some meals on the property.

Guesthouse rooms are a cheaper option, but they aren’t always the most comfortable and some have a tainted reputation.

2. Take public transportation

The most affordable option for getting around Jamaica is public transportation. If you’re in or near Kingston, state-owned JUTC yellow buses operate throughout and beyond the city. Payment is by cash upon entry, or you can purchase a JUTC Smartercard  and use it as you travel.

There’s a bus park in every town and a bus stop on almost every main road. Route taxis (with red license plates) and minibuses or coaster buses are also popular methods of transportation, all costing around JM$200 per ride.

If you’re on the west, north or south coasts, you won’t find JUTC buses – route taxis and minibuses are the main way to travel for Jamaicans. For route taxis, you can also pay a little more for drivers to go off their usual route (for example, if your destination is a little further than their final drop-off point).

 If you’re traveling from town to town, consider taking the Knutsford Express bus, which operates in most towns in Jamaica. This is more comfortable (and a bit more expensive) than other forms of public transportation, but still cheaper than getting a private driver or renting a car.

3. Visit cookshops for the best authentic Jamaican meals

If you find yourself craving authentic Jamaican food , don’t think you need to go to an upscale restaurant to get the best – most locals take advantage of the thousands of cookshops on the island. The running joke is there’s one on almost every street in Jamaica.

These small food establishments serve hot meals in styrofoam takeout boxes at the most reasonable prices: traditional favorites, such as oxtail, curry goat, stew peas or fried chicken and rice and peas, for under JM$1,000. Many don’t have a dining area, just a kitchen and window where you order. 

4. Grocery shop at mini-marts or wholesales

If you’re planning to cook and need ingredients, or just want to stock up on groceries, avoid the island's major supermarkets (such as Megamart, Loshusan and Hi-Lo Supermarkets), as they're more expensive. 

You can generally find much of the same selection for a lot less at a small wholesale store (the word is usually in the name, for example, Tiger Wholesale in Kingston) or mini-mart.

Many wholesales don’t have aisles you can browse – only a window to order what you want and pay. Mini-marts will always have aisles, but they are much smaller in comparison to a general supermarket. These stores also tend to have items sold in bulk or special deals.

For fruits and vegetables, again, avoid major supermarkets and get your products in the town markets or from street vendors, who tend not to hold a price.

5. Negotiate your prices

Speaking of not holding a price, don’t be afraid to negotiate! In craft markets, vendors are all about the sale, even if it means selling their products for a little less than what they want to. Don’t be unreasonable, but definitely bargain – you’ll get the best deals.

6. Get a Jamaican SIM card

If you plan on staying in Jamaica for a lengthy period of time, it's best to get a local SIM card. A SIM can be purchased at any outlet of the two mobile networks on the island: Digicel or FLOW .

International plans or minutes for a foreign number can cost a pretty penny. It works out cheaper to get a local SIM card, which costs less than JM$1,000, then buy a data plan or international minutes if you need to.

7. Use local currency

Local businesses and vendors, especially those in tourist areas, will sometimes charge in US dollars using the most expensive rate possible, especially when they recognize that you’re a tourist. Get and use Jamaican currency – that way you won’t be tricked into paying a “foreign price” for goods and services. 

8. Take advantage of free rivers and beaches

There’s lots to see and do in Jamaica. While many of the points of interest and attractions charge a fee, there are also tons of free beaches across the island where you can hang out, unwind or even party. 

Winnifred Beach in Portland, Seven Mile Beach in Negril and Treasure Beach on the south coast are among the popular free spots. 

Jamaicans also take advantage of many secluded rivers and waterfalls (Reggae Falls, Nanny Falls, Old Spanish Bridge and Salt River to name a few) that are mostly free – and rival some of the island’s most famed attractions.

9. Travel outside major local holidays

If you can be flexible with your travel plans, try to visit the island outside of major local holidays (such as Christmas, New Year’s, Easter and National Heroes weekend in October). 

During these holidays, there is a peak in tourist arrivals,  so prices of accommodations, goods and services tend to increase.

10. Find free entertainment galore

Jamaica is never short of entertainment. From massive festivals and concerts to small street parties, there is always something to do.

If you’re  a fan of dancehall , the legendary weekly Weddy Weddy party at the Stone Love Headquarters in Kingston is one of the most popular and inexpensive street parties in Jamaica. The entry fee is only JM$500, and the party usually goes until the wee hours of the morning.

Across the island, usually in small communities, street parties happen on a daily basis. In general, these aren’t widely advertised, so you have to ask around. They are usually free of charge – the only expectation is that you buy a drink. 

For reggae fans, Kingston Dub Club and Dubwise Cafe are the top reggae spots in Kingston. The entry fee for both is around JM$1,500, plus there’s a chance your favorite artist will stop by.

Island-wide, bars, lounges and some restaurants are also sources of great entertainment, either free or with a small entry fee. These spots usually have karaoke and other themed party nights during the week, guaranteed to keep you entertained.

17 Cheapest Caribbean Islands in 2024 For All-Inclusive Resorts

As of late summer 2023 there are around 460 all-inclusive resorts spread around the Caribbean, with more being constructed every year. More than 120 of those are in the Dominican Republic, with nearly 50 others in Jamaica. The Cancun/Playa del Carmen/Cozumel area has more than 160, and the rest are spread among other islands. When researching Caribbean vacations, you’ll find the cheapest all-inclusive deals are clearly on the islands with the most resorts.

If you are looking for a cheap Caribbean all-inclusive or at least one that offers excellent value, it’s best to look in the places that have the most resorts because they have to compete on price in order to fill up most of the year. On the other hand, if you are looking for more of a boutique experience and you have a larger budget, you will probably be happier on one of the smaller islands such as St. Lucia or Barbados.

To make your decision at least a bit easier, we’ve sorted through the entire Caribbean to compare prices of these all-inclusive resorts, and listed the destinations from cheapest to most expensive below. We’ve previously ranked Caribbean islands by price for regular hotels, but the order here is quite different.

Updates for 2024

You can still find amazing bargains and resorts starting well under US$200 per night in high season, but a resort that might have charged US$160 per night in early 2023 will be charging more like US$185 per night in early 2024. The bottom line is you should book as early as possible to lock in the best deals. Most of these places allow free cancellation up until shortly before the dates, so there isn’t much to lose and a lot to gain.

High season vs. Low season

The best-value time of year is from around January 10 through the end of February, because you get perfect weather and smaller crowds than around Christmas and in March.

The list below is ranked based on high season rates because that’s when most people visit the Caribbean, but it’s worth looking closely if you are going in the off season because the order would be somewhat different, and some destinations are far cheaper while others only drop prices a bit. In other words, if your schedule is flexible then cheap all-inclusive trips are even cheaper September through November.

The Best Deals?

Air + hotel packages are often the best deals. The room rates below are obviously for the resort only, with airfare extra. Depending on your departure point, you might find slight differences in the order if you choose an air+hotel package. Regardless of where you are starting, it’s worth checking the prices of the airfare and the hotel separately, and also as a package. Usually the air+hotel package will be cheapest, but certainly not always, so it’s worth a few more minutes to confirm before you buy.

1 – la romana, dominican republic (cheapest).

On the southern shore not far west of Punta Cana in eastern Dominican Republic, La Romana is probably best known to the legendary 5-star resort called Casa de Campo, which remains popular today. There are about a dozen other all-inclusive hotel choices in the region, and most of the others are in the lower to middle price range, some with very appealing off-season prices.

Direct flights into La Romana Airport are available from many larger cities, but the resorts are also close enough to the Punta Cana Airport that flying into that larger and cheaper facility might save both time and money depending on where you are starting. In fact, when you search for Punta Cana resorts you’ll usually see the La Romana resorts mixed in, so it’s really one big market.

On the northern coast of the Dominican Republic you’ll find the district of Puerto Plata, which may not have the country’s nicest beaches, but it does have a great abundance of cheap all-inclusive vacation resorts. Flights into the local airport aren’t as cheap as into many other areas on this list, so flight+hotel packages might not reflect the amazingly low prices of the resorts themselves.

During the high season the deals available at the 25 or so all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Plata are definitely among the best for any Caribbean island, and during the off season (particularly September and October) the prices are so low that some of them look like mistakes. As long as you are clear that this is nothing like St. Barths, then Puerto Plata offers great value and a lot of fun.

If your budget is so low that your options are Puerto Plata or staying home, then Puerto Plata could be perfect. But if you can afford a bit more I think it’s worth checking the deals in Punta Cana, which is listed a bit below.

3 – Cozumel, Mexico

A small Caribbean island just across the channel from Playa del Carmen and just south of Cancun, Cozumel has 14 of its own all-inclusive resorts with rates mostly in the lower end and middle of the pack for Caribbean all-inclusives. On Cozumel you get the benefits of being on an island, but also the convenience of being a short ferry ride from an interesting town and some famous ruins and other sights.

Cozumel has its own airport and if you can get a direct flight into it you can often get a good fare. But the Cancun Airport is much larger and has many more direct destinations, so you might actually save both time and money by flying in and out of that one. To get from Cancun Airport to Cozumel you can take a short (and super scenic) flight or take a shuttle to the ferry in Playa del Carmen and then take the ferry over, which takes about two hours each way in total.

4 – Cancun

While it’s not a Caribbean island like the rest of these on the list, we are including Cancun because it has endless Caribbean beaches, and it’s among the cheapest choices for an all-inclusive holiday when you factor in the flight. The area has over 80 hotels that are fully all inclusive or offer an all-inclusive option, all the way up and down the price range.

As obvious a choice as it may be, Cancun does have a lot going for it, including cheap nonstop flights from all over North American and even Europe. One thing to be careful of is that that there are quite a few disapointing resorts mixed in at the lower price ranges, so it’s important to check the reviews before you commit. Those who book carefully will be getting the best value for money in the Caribbean.

Only about an hour by road south of Cancun and its huge airport, Playa del Carmen is a lively tourist town filled with hotels, shops, and activities. Nearly all of the all-inclusive resorts are on the edges of town or on the beach on the road from Cancun, so guests at these resorts will need to make special trips to enjoy the town itself. This is part of an area now known as the Riviera Maya, which runs from just south of Cancun to just south of Tulum, so sometimes you’ll see resorts listed with Riviera Maya as their location if they aren’t in Playa del Carmen itself.

Room rates at all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen are very competitive, and package prices are unusually good value because they come with a flight into Cancun, which is known for bargain flights. This isn’t an island, but being out of the Yucatan Peninsula it feels a lot like one. The nightlife in Playa del Carmen isn’t as famous as that of Cancun, though the town far more interesting in most other ways.

It’s also worth noting that the most expensive all-inclusive resort in this area are stunning overwater bungalows at the El Dorado Maroma Resort . These are the only true honeymoon-style overwater bungalows in Mexico and they are very popular.

6 – Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

With over 75 hotels that offer all-inclusive deals, Punta Cana has the greatest concentration of these resorts on any Caribbean island. The resort area occupies the far eastern tip of the Dominican Republic and the hotel beaches can either face northeast or southeast. The busy local airport gets direct flights in from all over North America and Europe, and airfares are reasonable for the Caribbean.

With so many to choose from, Punta Cana has resorts big and small, up and down the price range, though it’s worth noting that a few of the cheapest places tend to get a lot of negative reviews from guests. The vast majority of hotels here are in the same general price range, and most offer very good value for the region. With new highways and an efficient new airport, Punta Cana should probably be the first choice for any value-oriented traveler who appreciates gorgeous beaches. The actual town of Punta Cana doesn’t have much going on, so staying in an all-inclusive resort here is wise and you won’t be distracted by things outside of your resort.

7 – Samaná, Dominican Republic

Facing a peaceful bay on the southern edge of a peninsula, Samaná has only a handful of resorts offering all-inclusive options, but it’s still worth considering for people who prefer a low-key destination compared to most of those mentioned above. There is a new international airport nearby with nonstop flights from many key international cities, so it’s pretty easy to reach for most people.

The high season prices are in the middle to upper levels for the Caribbean, but the low season special rates are among the best anywhere, so it might be worth even a closer look for those willing to risk the tiny possibility of a big storm altering their holiday plans.

8 – Montego Bay, Jamaica

Featuring about 25 hotels that offer all-inclusive options, Montego Bay in Jamaica has a few rather affordable resorts, but most of them are at least a bit up the price ladder, well over US$400 per night in high season. Doing research and checking prices for this 2024 list we noticed that MANY of the Jamaican resorts have been getting unusually bad reviews in the last year or two. It used to be only a couple of the cheapest resorts would fall below the threshold where we wouldn’t even mention or recommend them, but this year it looked like half the Montego Bay resorts are now getting consistently lousy reviews. Be careful before booking here these days.

Being in between Ocho Rios and Negril, and being home to the entire area’s major airport, Montego Bay also has the fastest connections from the plane to your hotel, so it’s also an ideal option for a long weekend trip where every minute counts. The main tourist area of Montego Bay is almost as disappointing as the one in Ocho Rios, so staying in an all-inclusive is your best option. Some resorts here, including some of the most expensive ones like the Sandals Royal Caribbean , are very close to the airport’s runway. Guests do hear planes taking off a few times an hour, but it’s over in 10 seconds or so.

9 – Ocho Rios, Jamaica

With 11 all-inclusive resorts in the area, Ocho Rios offers mostly mid-market all-inclusive resorts, while nearby Montego Bay and Negril have some cheaper and more expensive options. Visitors to all three of Jamaica’s main tourist spots will all fly into the Montego Bay Airport, which has very competitive fares and nonstop flights from all over, so the chances of a cheap nonstop to get here are fairly high.

This is another Caribbean destination that has very appealing prices during high season, and jaw-dropping specials during the off season. And as noted in the Montego Bay section above, we noticed that many of the cheaper Jamaican all-inclusive resorts are getting pretty lousy reviews these days. Unless you are booking at one of the Sandals, you need to pay close attention to recent reviews at the cheaper places now.

By the way, the town of Ocho Rios has very little to offer on its own, aside from being near the wonderful Dunn’s River Falls. So if you want to go to Ocho Rios then an all-inclusive is the best and only good choice. Ocho Rios is also a cruise port, which does affect the town, but won’t have much effect on guests at all-inclusive resorts.

10 – Antigua & Barbuda

Unlike most of the other island groups in the Lesser Antilles, Antigua and Barbuda have many all-inclusive resorts, with more than 15 to choose from, none of which are on Barbuda at this point. Antigua has had some excellent deals for all-inclusive resorts during the off season so it’s worth checking if you are planning a summer trip, but the rates when we checked for this update were looking pretty high for some reason.

For guests who are looking to escape the scene of the huge hotels and mass-market tourism of the DR and Jamaica, this is an excellent option. The downside is that flights tend to be more expensive and the airport is served by far fewer destinations, so packages can seem a little more expensive than the resort prices would indicate.

11 – St. Lucia

More remote and a bit more exotic than most of the choices above, St. Lucia is arguably the most beautiful of all Caribbean islands. The island now has 28 resorts that offer all-inclusive options or are completely all inclusive, and most of those are in the middle to upper range of prices for the Caribbean. They now have more all-inclusive resorts than any of the other small islands, and again, St. Lucia is noted for its beauty, so this is one to consider.

Finding cheap airfare to St. Lucia is often the tricky part of doing it on a budget, so that’s the price you pay for getting off the beaten path a bit, but if you can find an airfare+hotel package that looks good then it’s definitely worth a good look.

By the way, arguably the single most beautiful view in all of the Caribbean is of the Pitons peaks on the southern portion of St. Lucia’s west coast. There are a few resorts with views of the Pitons and if you want to make your friends super jealous you might want to book at one of them. In spite of its remote location at the edge of the Lesser Antilles, Barbados is a large and popular hotspot for winter vacations, with nearly 100 different beach resorts on offer. Of those you’ll over 20 that offer all-inclusive packages, and those tend to be rather expensive compared to elsewhere in the Caribbean, at least during the high season.

Due to its popularity it’s not too difficult to get reasonably priced flights to Barbados, so you might find air+hotel packages that are appealing. Again, if you want an alternative to the DR and Jamaica, this is an option to consider. Barbados is very popular with Europeans and it has a long stretch of mansions and beach houses and exclusive shops and restaurants that make it a favorite with the rich and famous as well.

13 – Negril, Jamaica

Located on Jamaica’s west coast, just southwest of Montego Bay, Negril has nearly 20 resorts that offer all-inclusive options. This popular and long strip of hotels is where you’ll find some of Jamaica’s best bargains for those who prefer to pay for food and drinks separately, but its all-in resorts are more geared for the mid to upper range guest. More specifically, there are two fairly cheap all-inclusive resorts in Negril, and the rest are much more expensive.

You normally wouldn’t find Negril this far down the “expensive” list, but this year it is because most of the cheaper all-inclusives in this area are getting mostly poor reviews so we don’t even include those ones in our range. In other words, pay attention to recent reviews before booking.

As with the others, you’ll fly into Montego Bay and then take a shuttle to your Negril resort, so you can get good airfare and nonstop flights from all over. Quality in Negril is mostly high, but it runs the gamut so the area draws a mix of budget party people up to the luxury crowd. One added benefit of Negril compared to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios is that the 7-Mile Beach area here is actually a fun place loaded with local bars, restaurants, and shops. It’s sort of like the Jamaica that you might have dreamed about visiting decades ago when things were more simple.

14 – St. Maarten/St Martin

• High season: US$448 – $722
• Low season: US$329 – $569

Partly a French territory (in the north) and a Dutch territory (in the south), Saint Maarten/Sint Martin has 5 all-inclusive resorts including a couple of newer ones. There are all-inclusives on both sides of the border and both sides are pretty similar although the French side typically has better food and the Dutch side has casinos and more nightlife.

The all-inclusive resorts here are all in the mid range on the price scale, so each of the five could be considered by almost anyone looking to come here. You’ll get lower prices and better value at the destinations nearer the top of this list, but this island has many fans who come back every year, although it’s also usually crowded with cruise ship passengers during daylight hours.

15 – Nassau, Bahamas

The greater Nassau area and the Paradise Island area in particular are very popular for winter holidays, but they aren’t good places to find affordable all-inclusive resorts. With only about five options, including one cheap and disappointing resort, the Bahamas is not fertile ground for all inclusive deals.

The best thing Nassau has going for it is that it’s very close to Florida and flights are usually quite cheap and frequent, so it’s a good choice for a long weekend when you don’t want to spend most of your coming and going days in transit. But for a week-long trip you’ll get much better value for the money by going to the DR or Jamaica.

Especially outside of peak season it’s worth looking at Atlantis, Paradise Island deals and specials , which can be up to 40% off.

16 – Grenada

Grenada is partly famous for being less developed than many of its Caribbean neighbors. As of late 2019 they were down to a single all-inclusive resort that was also extremely expensive, but since then a few more resorts have come on board and now you’ve got choices up and down the price range. This is an English-speaking island so it mostly appeals to Americans, Canadians, and Brits.

Flights into Grenada aren’t among the cheaper ones compared to some of its neighbors, so this isn’t an ideal destination for those looking for great bargains. However, that also means that it tends to cater to a more thoughtful group of visitors, which will appeal to many.

Just off the coast of Venezuela, the island of Aruba is somewhat different compared to most Caribbean islands, with a dry climate all year round. The island has quite a few good bargains for those interested in traditional beach resorts, but its 10 or so all-inclusive resorts tend to be aimed primarily at the upmarket crowd.

During the autumn months you can get better deals at all-inclusive resorts on Aruba, which is even better considering it still gets almost no rain and is usually clear of the main hurricane zones. The island continues to be popular with Europeans, and airfares are quite reasonable from most major cities.

Sandals is arguably the most famous high-end all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, and Beaches is the company’s family-oriented brand. Curiously enough, those chains DON’T show up on most travel search sites so they aren’t included in the information in this list. Generally speaking, Sandals and Beaches would be among the more expensive all-inclusive resorts on these islands, and they are famous for including more than their competitors in the room rate.

It’s worth mentioning that Sandals now has 3  all-inclusive resorts with overwater bungalows , two in Jamaica and one in St. Lucia. They obviously aren’t cheap, but still they are an extremely popular ‘bucket list’ experience for many romantic couples so they tend to be booked well in advance.

Family of 4.. (kids are 13 & 20 looking for all inclusive resorts (not Jamaica)we been there 4 times already) One “must” is CALM….. clear water like Negril Jamaica. What about Punta Cana? is it even safe to travel there? I have heard the beaches there have rocks and shells and you need to wear beach shoes??? I prefer soft barefeet beaches/water.. lol. Interested in Aruba, Bahamas, St Lucia, Grand Caymen but can not afford a $10,000.00 trip. Any ideas? thanks

As far as I am aware, Punta Cana is still among the safer places to visit in the Caribbean. I’ve been to a few beaches there and they were all white sand, but the area is like 60 miles of beaches so some might be more pristine than others. I think the seaweed is a bigger problem, and it seems like most Caribbean beaches are dealing with that on and off.

If you are looking for really calm water I think your best bet will be to find an island with bays or inlets. I stayed at a Sandals in St. Lucia that was on a very calm bay and the water was amazing, but most St. Lucia resorts are not on bays. Still, there are resorts on calm bays on many islands. So I don’t think it’s a matter of choosing the right island, but of choosing a resort in the right area on many different islands. You might even check out maps online and look at which ones have bays and lagoons. Best of luck! -Roger

Hope you and your family are safe and well during this pandemic. I would love to take my partner on a week vacation (5-8days) to an all inclusive resort with an overwater bungalo. What would be the best choice, in terms of quality and price? Looking for something affordable (I know that’s subjective), and I do not want to say cheap because we also want someplace with quality accommodations and service. Preferably the Caribbean, but anywhere in the world would do if it’s a great and amazing deal, price-wise.

Unfortunately there aren’t too many options for overwater bungalows in the Caribbean , but our sister site on that link keeps track of all of them. There are two in Jamaica and one in St. Lucia, and all of those are Sandals and go for a bit over US$2,000 per night. I’ve been to all three of them and they are amazing, but most of us don’t have that kind of money.

There are a couple in Mexico close to Cancun and I think those are better value as they start closer to US$1,000 per night.

The places in Bora Bora, Moorea, and Tahiti start at around US$600 per night and there are many to choose from, but the flight from Los Angeles to Tahiti is long and pretty expensive so it ends up costing about as much and taking more time. Let me know if you have any questions. -Roger

Strangely enough, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have only a few all-inclusive resorts total and they are kind of pricey. If you are looking for value I’d search in the Punta Cana area for smaller resorts. Most of the resorts there are huge, but they also typically have golf-cart shuttles to take guests wherever they want in the resort, so they can actually be better for those with mobility issues than a smaller resort where you have to walk everywhere. That budget is actually enough in several parts of the Mediterranean , where all-inclusive resorts tend to be shockingly cheap (and also of lower quality). But in the Caribbean the all-inclusive resorts tend to start closer to US$120 per night (per couple) in low season (September and October). If you go alone you might find a rate closer to US$100 per night, but that’s obviously still double what you have in mind.

The cheaper resorts often make a good chunk of their money selling excursions to guests because the food, unlimited drinks, and housekeeping for two people can cost them over US$100 per day. If they can sell a Jet Ski excursion for US$200 per couple, for example, then that is where they can actually profit with a low room rate.

In Punta Cana (which is among the cheaper places) the hotels are mostly huge and they wouldn’t have much incentive to wheel and deal to fill one room for 3 months to a person who probably won’t buy any excursions or top-shelf booze or gifts from the gift shop. I’d say your best chance would be to look for normal hotels rather than all-inclusive places, and especially during the slow months of September through late November. You might find a small hotel with plenty of empty rooms that might do US$1,500 per month including breakfast. Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica are the cheaper options for something like that. You could probably survive on $15 per day for lunch and dinner, and whatever alcohol you’d buy locally at retail prices. I created this website while living on the road in Asia mostly for a few years and it’s much easier to live on a shoestring budget there. I hope this helps. The musical heartbeat of the Caribbean , Jamaica conjures up images of colourful clothes, Bob Marley hits and white sandy beaches . But it’s also home to an array of natural wonders, including the 960-foot tall Dunn’s River waterfall and the Green Grotto Caves, which date back to 1655 and were used to film the 1973 James Bond hit Live and Let Die.

Shoppers and foodies alike can delight in the famous rum, creamy Blue Mountain coffee, fiery jerk chicken patties and intricate artisan handicrafts. All-year sun, glassy waters which lead to hidden mangroves and clear night skies alive with stars mean it’s an island not to be missed. Here’s how to get the most out of your visit.

Consider the season

Jamaica has a tropical climate year-round and rarely dips below 26 degrees during the daytime – even in December . March tends to be a more expensive month, with hoards of American spring break students descending on the island.

Low season is considered to be July to October , with humidity high and the average temperature sitting around 29 degrees. But if you're still keen to visit during peak season, flights with budget airlines such as  Norse  offer affordable flights from December until April. And whilst these months can be a cheaper and less busy time to visit, flights with budget airlines such as Norse are affordable year-around. Founded in 2021, the low-cost, long-haul company has recently introduced direct flights from London Gatwick to Montego Bay, starting at £639 for return flights in January. Their premium economy class is an impressive – and still affordable – option, with some of the most generous legroom (43 inches) and recline measurements (13 inches) in the industry.

Go all-inclusive

Resorts and tourist traps on the island are aplenty, meaning cheap street food isn’t necessarily easy to come by. Look to all-inclusive resorts to cover everything from daily meals and a bottomless mini bar to an action-packed itinerary. Picturesque beach-front hotels such as Couples Resorts include 24 hour dining across multiple restaurants, as well as a coffee shop boasting the island's famous Blue Mountain beans, a juice and cocktail bar, and a snack and ice cream corner. Free activities include dance and yoga classes, non-motorised water sports such as paddle boarding and day excursions are also available.

Save on shopping

Colourful craft markets boasting artisan handicrafts for as little as £5 can be found across the main regions of the island, including at the Ocho Rios Craft Park which offers a glittering selection of handmade jewellery , clothes, pottery and home decor made from an array of natural locally sourced materials including bamboo, mahogany and the dried fruit shells of calabash trees. If you’re looking for a more contemporary shopping experience, head to Negril’s Time Square Shopping Mall for coffee, spices and rum.

It may be among the more westernised of the Caribbean islands – accepting US dollars and offering fast food outlets such as KFC and Pizza Hut – but there are still plenty of iconic, affordable attractions to behold. If you’re visiting Kingston, take a free walk through the recently developed colourful art district in Water Lane, Downtown Kingston. Founded by non-profit organisation Kingston Creative in 2019, it celebrates an array of artists and already boasts 88 murals. And no trip to Jamaica's capital is complete without a visit to the Bob Marley museum, with a tour of the legend’s home costing £20.

For the sun worshippers, Seven Mile Beach, the crown jewel of Negril on the western point of the island, is known for its powdery sands and calm, shallow waters - perfect for families. 1. Cliff jump at Rick’s Cafe

Rick’s Cafe was founded in Negril 1974 by Richard Hershman and is now in the list of Top 10 Bars in the World. This restaurant and bar overlooking the ocean is a popular place for locals and visitors alike with spectacular sunsets and cliff jumping. It’s about 35 feet to the water, so if the height is too much for you, you can just relax and enjoy the view with a drink.

2. Go on a rum tour

Rum, made from fermenting and distilling sugarcane, is one of Jamaica’s biggest exports. If you’re a rum aficionado, this is your chance to get up close with the production and tasting process. Tour Appleton Estate in St. Elizabeth, voted one of the best in the Caribbean, which has been producing rum since 1749 (they produce 10 million liters of rum each year). It’s located in the beautiful Nassau Valley and offers the chance to learn how rum is produced (samples included). Worthy Park and Hampden Estate also offer rum tours.

3. Hang out at the beach

Jamaica is rich with soft, powdery beaches. In Montego Bay, head to Doctor’s Cave Beach on Jamaica’s Hip Strip, one of the country’s finest and most popular beaches with miles of impeccably white sand and sparkling waters that are said to have healing properties. It’s also a great place for snorkeling. If you want something more secluded, choose Cornwall Beach with its chill vibes, lounge chairs, and sunset beach parties on Sundays. In Negril, Seven Mile Beach has a history of pirates and stunning turquoise perfect water with something for everyone including water sports, snorkeling, diving, and more. You can even rent jet skis or kayaks and explore on your own or go horseback riding on the beach. There are many eateries and restaurants for incredible seafood and places to take in the sunset. And past the overpriced hub around Margaritaville, you’ll find quieter stretches of pristine sand.

4. Lose yourself in the clouds

The Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park lies to the east of the island and covers over 100,00 acres. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to many rare and endangered mammals, amphibians, and bird species. The Blue Mountains here are the longest mountain range in Jamaica and offer incredibly lush scenery of 1,300 flowering plants and 530 fern species. It’s a great place to bird watch and hike the Holywell Nature Walks that take you through the rare tropical Cloud Forest. A short drive from Kingston, this park offers hiking, biking, and coffee plantation tours.

5. Explore Montego Bay

Montego Bay is the third largest city in Jamaica and the top place for tourist bars, international restaurants, beautiful beaches, and epic parties. There are tons of things to do here, from chilling and floating down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft, doing eco-adventure tours to the Rockspring Caves, or visiting the 18th-century Rose Hall Great House Georgian mansion. There is the famous Luminous Lagoon, one of the most popular bioluminescent bays in the world that offers a rare chance to see glowing blue waters at night. If you’re a foodie, there are several Jamaican food tours where you can taste delicious jerk chicken and other local favorites.

Other Things to See and Do in Jamaica

1. raft the rio grande.

For a unique look at the landscape, head to the Port Antonio area and take a guided trip down the Rio Grande River on a bamboo raft. This is one of the best ways to see the many caves, waterfalls, and crystal springs that are tucked away throughout the island. A three-hour rafting trip costs 15,500 JMD per person with Rio Grande Rafting Tour.

2. Go snorkeling

On Jamaica’s northern coast, you’ll find a wide array of sea life. Here you can go snorkeling and see coral, stingrays, lionfish, barracuda, and more. Ocho Rios is another exciting place to snorkel, with plentiful scorpionfish, lettuce sea slugs, and nurse sharks. Guided trips start around 5,300 JMD.

3. Explore the Green Grotto

Over 1,000 caves dot the Jamaican landscape. Green Grotto Caves on the north coast is probably the most famous. The caves are made of limestone and the tides have etched the walls with the green algae that have given the cave its name. As you move through the cave, you’ll walk through a forest of stalactites and stalagmites. Fun fact: Spaniards hid here in the 17th century when the English invaded Jamaica. Entry is 3,050 JMD per person.

4. Tour the Sun Valley Plantation

Visit the Sun Valley Plantation in Ocho Rios to learn about the island’s history, from the slave trade to the present day, as well as what life was like living on a plantation growing coffee, bananas, and tropical fruits. It’s an immersive experience, where you’ll get to meet the owners and the hardworking staff. The tour takes 90 minutes and includes samples of the plantation’s tasty fruits. This tour doesn’t gloss over the hard facts that this plantation once used slaves for profit. Tours cost 8,600-12,000 JMD.

5. Explore Kingston

The capital of Jamaica, Kingston, is a rough-and-tumble kind of place. It’s worth a visit for a day or two. Check out some of the important landmarks, like Devon House, built in the Jamaican Georgian style typical of the plantation homes built by colonists during the slave trade. It’s 1,775 JMD to visit and admission includes a snack or beverage of your choice. Also, don’t miss King’s House (the official residence of the Governor-General), the Prime Minister’s house, and the Bob Marley Museum. While you’re here, be sure to head out and listen to some live reggae at the Dub Club, visit the National Gallery of Jamaica, go shopping at the Coronation Market, and chill out in Emancipation Park.

6. Climb the Dunn’s River Falls

Located in Ocho Rios, these falls cascade over plateaus 600 feet above the ground. You can actually climb up them if you’re feeling adventurous or just walk the trail that follows the river and go for a swim in one of the many azure pools at the base of the falls. Entrance is 3,800 JMD. If you enjoy adrenaline activities, you can also zipline here.

7. Birdwatch at Cockpit Country

Jamaica has 150 resident species of birds, with 29 of those species being endemic to the island. Just southeast of Montego Bay lies Cockpit Country, an area rife with nearly 110 of these species. Keep an eye out for Black-billed Parrots, endangered Jamaican Blackbirds, and Blue Mountain Vireos. The area itself is lush and scenic, with sinkholes of dissolved limestone and lots of rivers.

8. Swim the Blue Hole

Blue Hole is one of the less touristy swimming spots on the island. Admission costs 3,800 JMD while a tour that includes hiking to a mini waterfall, cliff jumping, a rope swing, swimming in some blue lagoons, and plenty of stunning scenery costs 7,600 JMD. For an extra fee, you can also go river tubing or bamboo rafting. Just be aware that there’s not anywhere you can store your bags, so if you don’t have in a car to keep your belongings, bring a waterproof bag you can keep your stuff in while you swim. )

9. Take a day trip to Portland

This area is off the tourist trail and a nice alternative to the crowds on the coast. Here, you’ll be rewarded with peaceful beaches, endless natural beauty, and friendly locals who aren’t afraid to chat you up. While you’re here, visit the Blue Lagoon, see Somerset Falls, and sample plenty of jerk chicken in the town of Boston.

10. Visit the Bob Marley Museum

Bob Marley, one of Jamaica’s most famous artists, is often blaring in the background all around the country. Visit his house on Hope Road in Kingston where he lived and worked between 1975-1981. You’ll learn about his life, with glimpses into his recording studio and bedroom. Admission is 3,800 JMD or book a combo “One Love” tour for 6,095 JMD that includes Bob Marley’s “Making of the Music” tour.

Jamaica Travel Costs

Hostel prices – A bed in a 4-6-bed dorm in touristy places like Montego Bay costs about 3,500-3,800 JMD per night. They start from 2,200 JMD in places like Port Antonio. A private room with a shared bathroom costs about 6,500 JMD per night and a room with a private bathroom is around 7,400 JMD. Free Wi-Fi is standard and most hostels also have self-catering facilities.

For those traveling with a tent, there are a few campsites in Jamaica. You can get a plot for a two-person tent without electricity for as little as 300 JMD per night.

Budget hotel prices – Budget two- and three-star hotels start at 6,150 JMD per night in less touristy areas like Port Antonio but are closer to 8,000 JMD near beach resort areas. Expect basic amenities like free Wi-Fi, TV, and occasionally free breakfast.

Airbnb is available everywhere in Jamaica. For a private room, expect to pay from 5,700 JMD per night, while an entire home/apartment averages closer to 10,000-12,000 JMD per night.

Food – Jamaican cuisine is influenced by a mix of Caribbean, African, and European flavors, owing to the numerous countries that have occupied the island over the years. Seafood and tropical fruits are super common here, and popular dishes include goat curry, patties (a savory turnover), saltfish (dried and salted cod), and dumplings.

A casual lunch at an inexpensive restaurant costs around 800 JMD. You’ll find stewed chicken or beef on most menus for about 450 JMD, and jerk chicken is about the same price.

A combo meal at McDonald’s costs about 1000 JMD while a large pizza costs about 2,200 JMD. If you want to splash out, a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant costs around 3,500 JMD with drinks.

Beer is around 400 JMD, and a latte/cappuccino is around 480 JMD. Bottled water is closer to 115 JMD.

If you plan on cooking your own food, expect to pay 7,000 JMD per week for groceries. That includes basic staples like pasta, rice, seasonal produce, and some meat or seafood.

Backpacking Jamaica Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Jamaica, my suggested budget is around 7,000 JMD per day. This assumes you’re staying in a hostel, cooking all your meals, limiting your drinking, taking the bus to get around, and doing mostly free activities like lounging on the beach and swimming. If you plan on drinking, add an extra 500-1,500 JMD to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of 17,000 JMD per day, you can stay in an Airbnb, eat out for a few meals, enjoy a few drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do some paid activities like rafting or snorkeling.

On a “luxury” budget of 34,000 JMD or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink more, rent a car to get around, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you spend more, some days you spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Jamaica Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Although Jamaica is a holiday destination, there’s more to the island than the resorts. Once you step out of the resort bubble, you’ll really lower your costs (and experience a more local version of the country). Here are some ways you can save money in Jamaica:

• Shop around for tours – If you’re going snorkeling, shop around for the best price as equipment and tours can vary widely even along one beach front.
• Avoid spring break – If you visit during the American spring break season in March or April, you’ll pay 25% or more for everything.
• Enjoy nature – Relax on the beach, go for a hike, or take in a sunset. Jamaica’s natural beauty is breathtaking and free, so drink it in!
• Pay in Jamaican dollars – When possible, pay for anything in Jamaican dollars. You’ll often get a better exchange rate.
• Look for deals and discounts – Visit Jamaica has a whole section on their website (visitjamaica.com/travel-deals) dedicated to travel discounts, deals, and bundles. Some are meh, but sometimes there are sizeable discounts on hotels.
• Shop for souvenirs at supermarkets – If you want to purchase souvenirs like coffee, jerk seasoning, or hot sauce, go to a supermarket like Quality Traders rather than a souvenir kiosk.
• Stay with a local – There are a few Couchsurfing hosts in Jamaica so use the app to find free accommodation during your visit. You’ll save money and get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips and advice with you.
• Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is generally safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Jamaica

Jamaica has a fair number of hostels and budget accommodations. Here are my suggested places to stay:

• Jay’s Guest House (Blue Mountains)

How to Get Around Jamaica

Public transportation – Jamaica has an extensive transportation network of buses and minibusses that link almost all the villages and towns — and they’re very affordable. There is often no set timetable though so buses leave when they’re full. For that reason, make sure you’re flexible when taking the bus. Buses and minibusses charge around 150-170 JMD.

Taxi – Taxis have a 225 JMD starting fare and charge 725 JMD per kilometer. While affordable, they add up fast so use them sparingly.

Bus – Coach buses can get you to and from most of Jamaica’s touristy destinations. Knutsford Express is one of the most popular buses, with a two-hour trip between Kingston and Ocho Rios costing about 2,850 JMD. A four-hour trip from Kingston to Montego Bay is about 3,800 JMD.

You can also take minibuses (“coasters”) everywhere. Licensed minibusses have a PPV license plate (public passenger vehicle) or a JUTA sticker (Jamaica Union of Travelers Association) and are exclusively used by tourists. They tend to leave on a pre-set schedule.

Scooter – You can rent a scooter or motorcycle from various places around Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios for about 4,500-9,200 JMD per day, with motorcycles being on the higher end. Remember to always wear a helmet!

Bicycle – The roads here aren’t the safest for cycling, but if you want to rent a bike, rentals start around 2,000 JMD per day.

Car rental – Car rentals can be found for around 4,500- 6,000 JMD per day for a multi-day rental. Renters need to be 21 and have an International Driving Permit (IDP). For the best car rental prices, use Discover Cars .

When to Go to Jamaica

Jamaica has pleasant weather year-round, with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s°C (70s°F) to 30s°C (high 80s°F).

January to March is the peak season for the island, with prices spiking all over the place. This is when the island is at its liveliest.

To beat the crowds, avoid popular breaks like Christmas, Easter, and Spring Break. Otherwise, you’ll be shoulder-to-shoulder with tourists at most resorts and beaches. Prices are much higher too.

Personally, I think October to mid-December is the best time to visit if you want to take advantage of the high temperatures in the shoulder season. Hotel and flight deals are usually the best during this time and the crowds are a little thinner.

How to Stay Safe in Jamaica

Jamaica is a relatively safe place to backpack and travel but crime does happen here, especially at night and around the party areas of the country. Petty theft is very common so keep an eye out for pickpocketing. Never leave your valuables unattended while at the beach.

When out and about, do not flash around any cash or valuables. Keep them at your hotel in a safety deposit box whenever possible. This is especially true in touristy areas like Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril. Keep your hotel/accommodation doors and windows locked at all times as break-ins can occur.

Kingston is, unfortunately, no stranger to violent crime and gang activity. If you want to explore Kingston, do not go out alone at night.

LGBTQ travelers should practice caution here. Homophobia is rampant and there are laws against same-sex relations.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

My biggest piece of advice is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.
