Summary of NRMA International Comprehensive policy

How does nrma travel insurance cover covid-19, what policies does nrma offer, here's a breakdown of nrma travel insurance features, standard features, optional add-ons, how to make an nrma travel insurance claim, here's the bottom line about nrma travel insurance, frequently asked questions, request travel insurance quotes and compare policies.

Destinations

  • NRMA covers up to $10,000 of your rental car excess, higher than many other brands.
  • NRMA covers up to $45,000 for loss of income. We didn't find another brand that offered more cover in this area.
  • There's no option to add higher-risk activities to your policy, such as outdoor rock-climbing, which might rule NRMA out for some travellers.
  • NRMA offers limited coverage for expenses related to COVID-19.

Travel insurance customer satisfaction finalist

NRMA ranked in second place, with an overall score of 4.24/5. 89% of those surveyed said they'd recommend NMRA travel insurance to a friend. NRMA scored highly for customer service and ease of application, but it wasn't as impressive in the value for money category.

Best Travel Insurance - Comprehensive finalist

NRMA Travel Insurance ranked in second-place for comprehensiveness out of the 28 international policies we analysed. It scored highly for features including hospital cash allowance, COVID cover and rental car excess insurance.

Table updated September 2023

NRMA offers some cover in relation to COVID-19, including:

  • Appropriate overseas medical, emergency, evacuation or repatriation costs if you're diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Additional expenses if you're diagnosed or admitted to hospital with COVID-19.
  • Additional expenses if a relative or your business partner not travelling with you becomes sick as a result of COVID-19.
  • Amendment or cancellation costs if you or your travelling companion are diagnosed with COVID-19 before you leave.
  • Amendment or cancellation costs if your non-travelling relative or business partner becomes sick due to COVID-19.
  • Amendment or cancellation costs if you're are an essential health care worker whose leave is revoked due to COVID-19.
  • Amendment or cancellation costs if you or your travelling companion are diagnosed with COVID-19 on your trip.

There are some scenarios that are not covered by NRMA Travel Insurance, including if your accommodation or tour cancels due to COVID-19 or if you travel knowing you have COVID-19.

NRMA offers six insurance policies to travellers - International Multi-Trip, International Comprehensive, International Essentials, Domestic Multi-Trip, Domestic Comprehensive, and Domestic Cancellation.

These are some of the main insured events that NRMA will cover. These benefits apply across all international policies.

  • Overseas medical treatment
  • Lost, damaged or stolen property
  • Trip cancellation or amendment
  • Additional accommodation and transport
  • Delayed luggage allowance
  • Rental car insurance excess
  • Emergency dental costs
  • Kidnap and hijack
  • Personal liability
  • Accidental death

NRMA also offers opportunities to tailor your cover to suit your needs. It has a specific Cruise Cover option but otherwise you just have to request a quote for your other needs.

  • Cruise cover. Mandatory if you are going on a multi-night cruise, includes extra cover for some cruise-related risks such as cabin confinement and missed ports.
  • Medical Conditions and Pregnancy. NRMA may consider covering your pregnancy or pre-existing condition following a health questionnaire.
  • Increase luggage item limits. You may be able to increase the item limit by paying an additional premium.
  • Motorcycle/moped riding. Extends your insurance policy to cover some motorcycle and moped-related claims, but not personal liability.
  • Snow skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. If you want your policy to cover you while on the slopes, you'll need to pay an additional premium.

cross icon

Unfortunately, travel insurance doesn't cover everything. Generally, NRMA will not pay your claim if it relates to:

  • Unlawful, wreckless or unreasonably unsafe behaviour by you
  • Behaviour while you were drunk or under the influence of drugs
  • Expenses related to a pre-existing medical condition
  • An act of war, invasion or revolution
  • Insolvency of a travel agent , tour operator or accommodation provider
  • Mandatory quarantines or isolations
  • You being unfit to travel or travelling against medical advic
  • Childbirth or pregnancy complications before the 24th week of gestation or if you have had previous pregnancy complications
  • An elective medical or dental treatment , cosmetic procedure or body modification (including tattoos or piercing)
  • Self-inflicted injury or illness, suicide or attempted suicide

Make sure you review the NRMA PDS for a detailed breakdown of what won't be covered, found under its list of general exclusions .

You can claim online via the NRMA website, following these instructions:

  • Describe the incident
  • Enter your expenses or losses
  • Upload any supporting documents
  • Provide your bank details
  • Review and finalise your claim

You can save and return to an incomplete claim for up to 28 days. Once you've lodged your claim, NRMA will update you within 10 working days.

You can also phone NRMA on 1300 135 640 between 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Or you can fill out a claim form and post it to:

NRMA Travel Insurance c/o Cover-More Claims Department Private Bag 913 North Sydney NSW 2059

NRMA offers particularly high benefit limits, so if you're travelling with expensive items or have a high rental car excess, it could be a good option.

However, any travellers keen to take part in risky or high-adrenaline activities may want to look elsewhere as NRMA doesn't offer an opportunity to add an adventure pack to its policies, whereas many other insurance brands do.

If you're still not sure about NRMA, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

What type of documentation do I need when making a claim?

NRMA may ask you to provide a range of documents including receipts, valuation certificates, credit card or bank statements, photos or an emergency services report.

Does NRMA cover pre-existing conditions?

NRMA covers a range of pre-existing conditions as standard, including asthma, coeliac disease, and bunions. Some additional conditions are covered with specific conditions, such as not being hospitalised within a certain time period, while others you will need to apply for specific cover and pay an extra premium..

Important information about this website

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

NRMA Travel Insurance Review

nrma travel partners

Fact checked

The National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) has been around for more than a century, establishing itself as one of the leaders in car, home and travel insurance. It’s a sub-agency of Lloyd’s of London and offers its services to customers across the country.

You can compare NRMA's travel insurance policies with a range of other offers here with Savvy, allowing you to choose the most suitable policy for your next trip.  Consider a range of coverage specifics, such as inclusions and exclusions, when picking the right offer for your situation.

Learn more about NRMA’s offerings on this page before getting a quote with Savvy today.

More about NRMA travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does nrma offer.

NRMA offers a range of travel insurance policies, including:

  • International Platinum Plan: this policy provides coverage for overseas medical and dental expenses, luggage and personal effects, additional pet boarding and funeral expenses. This policy also offers the most generous claim limits of NRMA’s products, including $2. 5 million personal liability cover.
  • International Premium Plan: this policy clips a few of the benefits from NRMA’s comprehensive product but still provides coverage for cancellation, medical expenses, accidental death and personal liability. The claim limits on this policy are slightly lower than the top-tier product.
  • International Essentials Plan: This particular policy covers you for the bare essentials, whether you’re taking an international holiday to Vietnam or Switzerland. This policy covers you for cancellation or rescheduling of your getaway, medical and hospital expenses, some emergency expenses and $1 million in personal liability if you’re involved in an accident or injury.
  • Domestic Plan: taking a trip across Australia or visiting family in another capital city? NRMA offers a domestic travel insurance policy which protects you against cancellation, certain medical expenses, loss or damage of your bags and the excess on a hire car. You’re also afforded $1, 000 in funeral expenses if you die due to a covered incident while you’re on your trip.
  • Cancellation-Only Plan: it’s all in the name. This policy purely covers you for any pre-paid costs if you need to cancel or reschedule your holiday due to a covered event. You get to choose the level of cancellation cover you need as part of this specific policy.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: are you taking many trips this year? Multi-trip insurance can be the best option if you travel often during the year. Multi-Trip, included in both International and Domestic Comprehensive, pays for any number of trips done during a year.

It's important to compare domestic and international insurance options with Savvy before you buy your policy, whether you're going to the Netherlands or simply travelling around Australia.

What optional extras are available through NRMA?

NRMA, like many other travel insurers, provides a range of optional extras for both international and domestic holidays. These include:

  • Ski and winter sports cover: looking to do some snowboarding on holiday ? NRMA offers ski and winter sports coverage which covers cancellation of passes and associated fees, medical expenses, snow ski equipment, piste closure and bad weather or avalanches.
  • Cruise cover: if you have a cruise scheduled, either internationally or domestically, you’ll need to acquire extra coverage if you’re going with NRMA for your travel insurance. Onboard medical expenses, formal cruise attire, emergency expenses and marine rescue diversion are all covered by this policy.
  • Rental vehicle excess cover: planning to hire a rental car to get around your holiday destination? This add-on covers you for the excess on your loan car if you’re involved in an accident or the vehicle is damaged.
  • Specified luggage items cover: with this add-on, you may extend the coverage for any high-priced things you're bringing on your trip. Cameras and other equipment, jewellery, camping gear, and eyewear such as glasses or sunglasses all fit into this category.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through NRMA?

It’s important to remember that even the most extensive product won’t provide you with limitless coverage, with providers still having a list of exclusions on their policies. NRMA’s exclusions include:

  • Stopping a course of treatment while on holiday
  • Travelling against your doctor’s advice
  • Medical expenses due to an uncovered and/or undisclosed medical condition, such as mental illness or a heart condition
  • The birth of a child
  • Any loss due to a dangerous or reckless act
  • Accidents caused by the consumption of alcohol or drugs
  • Breaking the law in your rental car

If you’ve found a policy that draws your eye, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of NRMA travel insurance

What we like, discounts for buying online.

If you simply purchase your policy online through NRMA’s website, you receive a 10% discount off your premium. This only applies if you buy direct, not through a third-party source.

Extensive luggage cover

Unlike many insurance companies on the market, NRMA offers cover for lost or damaged luggage or personal items across most of their policies, including the basic international option.

24/7 support

In the event of an emergency while overseas, you can rest easy knowing that NRMA is there for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What we don't like

Cruise coverage comes at an extra cost.

While some providers automatically include cruise cover as part of their domestic or international travel insurance policies, NRMA makes you pay a higher premium to be covered while you’re sailing the high seas.

Strict pre-existing medical condition requirements

Certain types of diabetes and asthma are included at no extra cost in NRMA's travel insurance policies. However, if you have a major medical condition like heart disease, you must seek a medical evaluation before being covered.

Modest personal liability coverage

If a court rules that you’re personally liable for the damage or injury to another person or property, NRMA allows you to claim up to $2. 5 million, which is lower than other providers.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about NRMA travel insurance

No – NRMA’s website says it doesn’t cover incidents arising from pandemics and won’t reimburse claims made due to border closures, quarantine, flight cancellations or disruptions or other emergency expenses.

If your travel plans hit a speed bump or the unexpected happens and you need to file a claim, NRMA allows you to file it online day or night. Making a claim through the travel insurance company means following these three steps:

  • Complete the claim form with ample information, including what type of travel insurance claim you’re making
  • Gather your relevant documentation such as medical or police reports or receipts
  • Submit your claim via the website or email

Once you’ve submitted your claim, NRMA sends you a confirmation email. Their website says the turnaround time for approvals is about 10 working days.

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to how much travel insurance costs , with the price of premiums determined by a unique set of variables including:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your chosen destination
  • The level of coverage you buy
  • Any optional extras you need
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy

A single-trip policy only covers one outbound journey and one return journey. In contrast, annual multi-trip policies cover you for an unlimited number of travels within a year (often up to 60 travel days per trip). If you’re taking a single flight without the option of returning home, you may get a one-way travel insurance policy that will cover you for the whole length of your stay (up to a year). Many insurance policies allow for an additional year of coverage to be purchased.
