What is a Home Office Travel Document?

A Home Office travel document is a document that allows non-UK nationals to travel outside the UK if they cannot use or obtain a passport from their own country. A person can only apply for a Home Office travel document in certain special circumstances.

Who is eligible?

In order to be eligible to apply for a Home Office travel document, a person must be living in the UK for one of the following reasons:

(i) they have permission to stay as a refugee or stateless person; (ii) they have humanitarian protection for a limited time after a failed asylum application; (iii) they have discretionary leave for a limited time after a failed asylum application; or (iv) they have indefinite leave to remain.

What are the different types of travel documents?

There are four different types of travel documents that a person can apply for, depending on their circumstances and their status in the UK:

1) If a person is a refugee, they can apply for a convention travel document; 2) If a person is stateless, they can apply for a stateless person’s document; 3) If a person is a non-UK citizen that wants to leave the UK and not come back, they can apply for a one-way document (also known as an IS137); 4) If a person has been refused a passport by their own country’s national authorities, they can apply for a certificate of travel.

It is important to note that a person must show that they have formally applied for and been unreasonably refused a passport by authorities in their country. People who have permission to be in the UK as a refugee or stateless person are exempt from this condition.

Applying for a Travel Document:

A person can apply for a travel document online or by post. If a person chooses to apply by post, they must fill in form TD112 BRP and send it to the Home Office. The form states that certain documents must be submitted alongside the application. All submitted documents must be original documents, not photocopies. Failure to provide the original documents will delay the application and may result in its refusal.

The applicant will also need to apply for a biometric residence permit (BRP) if they don’t already have one that’s up to date, as it is part of the travel document application. This is not required if a person is applying for a one-way document. Additionally, all existing non-biometric travel documents can continue to be used until they expire.

It is important to note that some countries will not accept a travel document if a person has less than 6 months’ leave to remain in the UK on the date they travel. The applicant should check that they meet the requirements of the country they are travelling to.

If an applicant’s family is applying at the same time, all postal applications should be sent in one envelope so that they can be dealt with together. A separate application and payment must be made for each person, whether it is online or by post. A person can also apply for a new travel document using form TD112 BRP if their previous document has filled up or expired.

If you live in the UK but aren't a British citizen and can't get a passport from your home country, you might be able to get travel documents from the British Home Office if you need to travel outside the country. Generally, you're only eligible for travel documents if you're staying in the UK as a refugee or stateless person, or if you're settled in the UK permanently (what the Home Office calls "indefinite leave to remain"). You can apply for travel documents online through the Home Office, but you have to mail the completed application along with supporting documentation. If you don't have a biometric residence permit (BRP), you'll need to apply for one of those when you apply for your travel document. Choosing the Right Travel Document

Step 1 Apply for a 1951 UN Convention travel document if you are a refugee.

  • This travel document is typically valid for up to 10 years, depending on the validity of your biometric residence permit (BRP). You can travel to any country except your country of origin.

Step 2 Use a 1954 UN Convention travel document if you are

  • Stateless travel documents are usually valid for 10 years, although they might be issued with a shorter validity depending on your situation. You can typically travel to any and all countries.
  • You're only considered stateless if you are not recognized as a citizen of any country. Some refugees are stateless, but not all. If you're not sure if you've been officially recognized as stateless, you probably haven't. Fewer than 100 people in the UK have been recognized as stateless since the official determination procedure was started in 2014. [4] X Research source

Step 3 Try a Certificate of Travel (COT) if you aren't a refugee or stateless person.

  • To get this documentation, apply for a passport using your home country's usual process. When your application is denied, save the original letter you get back from your home country.
  • You also need to show why the denial was unreasonable. The Home Office considers a denial reasonable if, for example, you have a criminal record in your home country or did not provide enough evidence to confirm your identity.
  • If you are granted a COT, it will typically have 5 years of validity. You can travel to any country with this document except for your country of origin.

Step 4 Get a one-way travel document if you want to leave the UK permanently.

  • While you do need to provide documentation to confirm your identity, you don't need to apply for a BRP to use this type of travel document.
  • This document is issued to any non-British citizen in the UK who doesn't have a passport and wants to leave the country. It can only be used for one journey out of the country and is valid for a year, although it's generally intended to be used immediately. [7] X Research source
  • One-way travel documents are typically issued for travel to a specified country. If you have to travel through one country to get to your destination country, that country will also be listed on your document.

Filling out Your Application

Step 1 Visit the Visas and Immigration website to start your application.

  • After you provide your location, you'll be asked to select which type of travel document you want to apply for. If you're not sure, click on the question so see who qualifies for each type.

Step 2 Enter your answers to the questions on the application.

  • If you're applying for a one-way travel document, your document will only be valid for travel to the country you specified. However, all other travel documents are typically valid for travel to any country, except your country of origin or the country from which you sought asylum.
  • If you're applying for a COT, you'll also need to discuss your process of applying for a passport from your country of origin and the reason your application for a passport was denied.

Tip: If members of your family are also applying for travel documents at the same time, you each have to apply online and pay your fees separately.

Step 3 Fill out the BRP portion of the application if you don't have a BRP.

  • The online application will ask you if you have a BRP. If you do, simply answer "yes." If you answer "no," the BRP application will come up for you to fill out.
  • You will have to provide a digital photo and digital fingerprints along with your signature for your BRP. You can get these done at any government service and support center or post office branch. As of January 2020, the fee is £19.20 for biometrics. Warning: If you already have a BRP but need to amend or replace it, you must do this before you apply for your travel document. You can't use the application included with the travel document application.

Step 4 Pay your application fees online to complete your application.

  • Refugee and stateless person's travel documents are £75 for adults, £49 for children under 15, and £0 if you were born before September 1, 1929.
  • One-way travel documents are £75 for all adults (regardless of age) and £49 for children under 15.
  • A COT is £280 for all adults (regardless of age) and £141 for children under 15.

Submitting Your Application

Step 1 Gather original documents to support your application.

  • If you're applying for a travel document as a refugee or stateless person, you'll need the British court order or certificate that shows you've been officially recognized as a refugee or stateless person, as well as your BRP.
  • If you're applying for a COT, you need documents that prove that you applied for a passport from your home country and that application was unreasonably denied. This might include a letter from your home country's immigration authority or a copy of your passport application. A COT typically requires the most documentation.

Tip: Make a photocopy of your BRP to send with your application — do not send your original BRP. All other documents must be originals.

Step 2 Get documents translated if they aren't in English.

  • There are many translation companies in the UK that offer professional translation services. You can find these companies with a quick internet search. You might also use the search engine provided by the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, a professional association of translators. Go to https://www.iti.org.uk/component/itisearch/?view=translators to find a translator who is a member of the association.

Step 3 Print your application and sign the declaration in black ink.

  • Your signature will be scanned and digitally included on your travel documents.
  • After you've signed your declaration page, make a photocopy of your entire application so you have it for your records.

Step 4 Email or fax evidence to support a priority request.

  • Scan the document and email it to [email protected] or fax it to 020 8196 0109.
  • You still must include the paper originals of any documents you fax or email in your package that you send to the Home Office.

Step 5 Send your package using Royal Mail Signed For service.

  • Send your documents to: Travel Documents Section UK Visas and Immigration Lunar House 40 Wellesley Road Croydon CR9 2BY
  • After verifying the information in your application, the Home Office returns documents that don't need to be kept with your application. If you want these documents returned to you by Special Delivery, include a prepaid Special Delivery envelope with your package.
  • If you realize after you've sent your package that you left out a document, don't send it separately. Instead, wait to hear back from the Home Office. They will send you a letter to request any documents that are missing from your application package.

Step 6 Wait for your travel document to arrive.

  • It typically takes 3 to 4 months for the Home Office to process an application for a travel document. [19] X Research source

However, some people cannot obtain a passport whilst they are living in the United Kingdom for a variety of reasons, such as refugees and stateless people. These individuals may be eligible to apply for a Home Office Travel Document, allowing them to travel outside the UK.

In this guide, we explain what the UK travel document is, who is eligible, and how to apply. We’ll also answer some frequently asked questions from Home Office rravel document applicants.

What is a UK travel document?

A UK Travel Document, also known as a Home Office Travel Document, is an alternative form of identification that provides the ability to cross international borders for travel. Whilst it looks like a UK passport, it does not confer the same rights granted to British nationals. Rather, a UK Home Office Travel Document provides a mechanism to permit travel and serves as identification. Holders of UK Home Office Travel Documents must note that they cannot access visa-free international travel in the same way as British citizens and will be subject to the visa arrangements outlined for nationals of their country of origin.

Why is a UK travel document important?

UK Home Office Travel Documents are important as they provide the ability to travel to individuals currently in the United Kingdom who may otherwise incur difficulties obtaining a national passport. For some people, obtaining a national passport can be impossible due to factors such as war, civil unrest, or persecution in their country of nationality. Obtaining a UK Home Office Travel Document also provides a widely recognised form of identification that will be accepted within the United Kingdom for future immigration applications and in daily life.

Who needs a UK travel document?

You will need a UK Home Office Travel Document if you want to have a form of UK identification and seek to travel internationally. You can only apply for a UK Home Office Travel Document from within the United Kingdom. You cannot be a British citizen and you must not be able to obtain a passport from your country of nationality. One of the following must also be true:

  • You have Leave to Remain or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the United Kingdom as a refugee
  • You have Leave to Remain or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the United Kingdom as a stateless person
  • You have Leave to Remain or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the United Kingdom as an individual with humanitarian protection status
  • You have Leave to Remain or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the United Kingdom but cannot obtain a passport from your country of nationality

What are the different types of UK travel documents?

There are four different types of UK Home Office Travel Documents. You will need to apply for the correct type of UK Home Office Travel Document for your circumstances. These include the Refugee Travel Document, Stateless Person’s Travel Document, One-Way Travel Document, and Certificate of Travel.

Refugee Travel Document – This type of UK Home Office Travel Document is intended for people who have been granted refugee status in the United Kingdom as well as people who came to the United Kingdom via Family Reunion to join a family member who has refugee status. Refugees are eligible for UK Home Office Travel Documents as per the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees. The Refugee Travel Document is valid for up to 5 years for individuals with Leave to Remain and expires in line with your immigration permission. If you have Indefinite Leave to Remain as a refugee, your Refugee Travel Document is valid for up to 10 years. If you are under the age of 15, your Refugee Travel Document is valid for up to 5 years. You can travel anywhere in the world on a Refugee Travel Document except for your country of nationality and/or any country you’ve sought asylum from. Please note that you will still be liable to apply for visa(s) before travelling internationally as you are not considered a UK national with this document. You will also need to be sure that the countries you travel to accept Refugee Travel Documents as a valid form of identification.

Stateless Person’s Travel Document

This type of UK Home Office Travel Document is intended for individuals who have been recognised by the UK Government as being stateless. Stateless persons are those who lack an officially recognised nationality from any country around the world and therefore are not eligible for the passport of any country. The Stateless Person’s Travel Document is valid for up to 5 years for individuals with Leave to Remain and expires in line with your immigration permission. If you have Indefinite Leave to Remain as a stateless person, your Stateless Person’s Travel Document is valid for up to 10 years. If you are under the age of 15, your Stateless Person’s Travel Document is valid for up to 5 years. You can generally travel anywhere in the world on a Stateless Person’s Travel Document issued by the UK Home Office. Please note that you will still be liable to apply for visa(s) before travelling internationally as you are not considered a UK national with this document. You will also need to be sure that the countries you travel to accept Stateless Person’s Travel Documents as a valid form of identification.

One-Way Travel Document

This type of UK Home Office Travel Document is intended for individuals who are not British, do not have a valid passport from their country of nationality, and seek to leave the United Kingdom permanently. It allows a one-way right of travel out of the United Kingdom to a country of destination. You will not be able to return to the United Kingdom on a One-Way Travel Document, so you will want to apply for a full passport once you leave the UK. The One-Way Travel Document is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Please note that you will still be liable to apply for visa(s) before travelling internationally as you are not considered a UK national with this document. You will also need to be sure that the countries you travel to accept One-Way Travel Documents as a valid form of identification.

Certificate of Travel

This type of UK Home Office Travel Document is intended for individuals who fall under one of the following situations:

  • If you have Leave to Remain or Indefinite Leave to Remain and have been refused a passport by your country of nationality
  • If you have humanitarian protection status in the United Kingdom with officially recognised fear of the authorities from your country of nationality
  • If you are on a Family Reunion visa in the United Kingdom after joining your family member who has humanitarian protection status in the United Kingdom
  • If you were born in the United Kingdom to an individual who has refugee status in the UK but you have not been granted refugee status in your own right
  • If you have a critical reason to travel and cannot receive a passport from your country of nationality quickly enough
  • If you fall under any of the above situations, you may be eligible for a Certificate of Travel. If you are applying for a Certificate of Travel due to a critical and imminent need to travel, you will need to provide details about why you need to travel soon.

What is the application process like for a UK travel document?

The application process for a UK Travel Document is not complex, but you must ensure that you meet the requirements and eligibility criteria before beginning the online application form. If you do not meet all requirements and eligibility criteria for a UK Home Office Travel Document, your application will be refused. You will need to submit a separate Travel Document application for every individual in your family, if you are applying as a family unit.

First, you will need to select the Travel Document application form on the UK Home Office website. You will need to identify if you are inside or outside the United Kingdom and then select the type of Travel Document for which you seek to apply – One-Way Travel Document, Certificate of Travel, Stateless Person’s Travel Document, or Refugee Travel Document. You will then need to provide an email address to the Home Office and click through the email verification link.

Next, you will provide all required personal details for your Travel Document application such as the following:

  • Your email address
  • Your phone number
  • Your home address
  • Your sex and relationship status
  • Your country of nationality, date of birth, country of birth, and place of birth
  • Information about your current Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
  • Your National Insurance Number (NIN)

You will also need to provide details about any criminal convictions, driving penalties, arrests, charges, cautions warnings, reprimands or other out-of-court penalties, civil court judgments, or civil penalties under UK immigration law that have been issued in the United Kingdom or any other country. You must also provide details if you have ever been involved in war crimes, crimes against humanity, genoide, terrorist activities, terrorist organisations, held terrorist views, or any other activities that would indicate you are not a person of good character. You must truthfully provide this information or face rejection of your application.

You will then provide details about your immigration and travel history, such as the length of time you have lived in the United Kingdom, any Home Office reference numbers you have been issued, past immigration applications in the UK and abroad. You will also need to provide details about places you plan to travel once you receive your new UK Home Office Travel Document, if you have these details.

Finally, you will need to consent to provide supporting documents. You will be required to send two passport-sized photographs in the post with your name and date of birth written on the back of each photograph. You will also need to send any previous Travel Documents to the Home Office before they will issue your new Travel Document. You will then confirm all information on the Travel Document application and pay the relevant application fee. Once you have paid the application fee, your online application form is complete. You should download and print the Document Checklist to send with your supporting documents in the post.

After you have submitted the online Travel Document application form, you will need to collect all supporting documents. At minimum, you will be required to send two passport-sized photographs and your Document Checklist. If you are submitting an application on behalf of a minor, you will need to provide a consent letter declaring that you agree to apply for your child’s Travel Document. You may be asked to provide additional documents depending on your circumstances, such as:

  • Your Leave to Remain grant letter
  • Any current or expired Home Office Travel Documents
  • Any current or expired national passports
  • Any current or expired foreign national identity cards

The Document Checklist will identify if you need to send original copies of these documents or if you can send copies of these documents. If any of these documents are not originally in English, Welsh, or Scottish Gaelic, you will need to include a certified translation alongside the original language.

How much does it cost to apply for a UK travel document?

The cost of your new UK Home Office Travel Document will depend on the type of Travel Document you require and how old you are. Here are the associated costs for the four types of UK Home Office Travel Documents:

You will need to pay the full Travel Document fee at the end of the online application form. If you do not pay the associated fee for your Travel Document, your application will be considered null and void.

How long does it take to receive a decision on my UK travel document application?

Once you have submitted the online application form for a UK Home Office Travel Document and submitted your two passport-size photographs in the post, you will need to wait for your Travel Document to process. Typically, you could wait 3 months to receive your new Travel Document to arrive. However, due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Home Office advises that it could take up to 6 months for your new Travel Document to arrive. As such, the Home Office strongly advises that you should not plan or book any travel arrangements until you have received your new UK Travel Document.

Under current UK rules, certain foreign nationals can use a biometric residence permit (BRP) as proof of their UK immigration status.

BRPs are set to be phased out as the UK government progresses with plans to digitise the immigration system. From 1 January 2025, the Home Office will no longer issue BRPs. Instead, visa holders will rely on their eVisa digital status.

What are biometrics?

Biometrics refer to information about the external physical characteristics of a visa-holder, including a digital facial photograph and a scan of their fingerprints.

What is a biometric residence permit?

An individual must usually enrol their biometrics when applying for a visa of more than 6 months, which are then used in a biometric residence permit (BRP).

A BRP is a physical polycarbonate card issued by the Home Office containing both this biometric information and immigration status in a tamperproof embedded chip. The permit has a unique document number.

The BRP is designed to provide a secure and easily-verified proof of identity and a person’s permission to be in the UK.

It is an easy way of reliably identifying a foreign national, and is designed to help combat illegal working and reduce illegal immigration to the UK.

It shows your biographic details, ie; your name, date and place of birth, as well as your biometric information, ie; fingerprints and facial image. The BRP also includes their conditions of leave, such as if someone is eligible for benefits.

As the holder of a BRP, this will allow you to prove your identity safely and quickly, when required, and provide official proof of your lawful status in the UK.

You are not required to carry your BRP at all times, but you must show this with your passport at the UK border, if required, when travelling in and out of the UK.

Who needs a BRP?

You will be issued with a BRP if you:

  • Apply to come to the UK for longer than 6 months
  • Extend your visa to longer than 6 months
  • Apply to settle in the UK
  • Transfer your visa to a new passport
  • Apply for certain Home Office travel documents

You will not be able to get a BRP if you used the UK Immigration: ID Check app when applying to remain in the UK. In these circumstances, you can only prove your immigration status online.

Why do I need a biometric residence permit?

The biometric residence permit can be used to confirm your immigration status in the UK, as well as your right to any public services or benefits you may be entitled to. It can also be used as a form of identification, for example, if you wish to open a UK bank account.

You are not required to carry your biometric residence permit at all times, but you must show it at the UK border, together with your passport, when travelling outside of, and when returning to, the UK. The card will confirm the date when your leave expires, and any other restrictions placed on your right to stay. As such, your permit will be valid for the duration of your leave.

Is a BRP the same as a BRC?

No, a BRP is a biometrics residence permit, while a BRC is a biometric residence card. While both documents relate to immigration status in the UK, they differ as follows:

BRPs are issued to foreign nationals who have received permission to stay in the UK for more than 6 months, such as on a visa or gaining indefinite leave to remain, whereas BRCs were oreviously issued to family members of EEA nationals resident in the UK.

What they are for

The BRP serves as proof of your immigration status and entitlement to access public services in the UK. It contains your biometric information (photo and fingerprints).

The BRC is primarily a document to prove residence rights for family members of EEA nationals, similar to a BRP but with “Residence Card” printed on it.

BRCs were discontinued in December 2020 and are no longer issued, although existing BRCs remain valid until their expiry date.

If you hold a BRC, you would not need to apply for a BRP unless your BRC expires and you wish to remain in the UK. However, you may need to obtain a different type of visa or status depending on your circumstances.

BRPs are also being phased out but remain in use for individuals holding certain visas or granted indefinite leave to remain until 2025. All new BRPs are now bring issued with an expiry date of 31 December 2024, regardless of the holder’s authorised period of leave. From 1 January 2025, UK immigration status must be proven using the eVisa system.

How do I apply for a biometric residence permit?

You do not have to apply separately for a biometric residence permit, rather you will get one automatically if your visa or immigration application is approved, or you are replacing an older document.

That said, as part of your visa or immigration application you will need to enrol your biometric information, namely, a scan of your fingerprints and a digital photograph of your face. You will also need to provide your signature.

The process is quick, taking between 5-10 minutes and does not involve any ink or mess. You will also not need to take off your head covering if you wear one for either religious or medical reasons.

Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, although a child under the age of 5 does not need to give their fingerprints when they apply.

You do not have to apply separately for a BRP, where registering your biometric information forms part of the application process for a visa of more than 6 months. You will be told by the Home Office when you apply whether you will be required to enrol your biometrics and where this should be done – either a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point or a Service and Support Centre (SSC).

Applying for a BRP from within the UK

If you’re applying from within the UK, you’ll go to either a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point , a service and support centre or a post office branch. There will be a fee of £19.20.

If you are making a visa application from inside the UK, your BRP will be sent to the postal address you gave in your application form, where you will not be required to collect it. Your BRP should arrive within 10 working days of getting your Home Office decision letter saying that you can stay in the UK. However, it may take longer for your BRP to arrive if this is being delivered to either the Isle of Man, Isles of Scilly or the Scottish Highlands or islands. You will get a text and/or email from the delivery company (TNT) notifying you when your BRP is due to arrive and how to change the delivery date/time.

Someone aged 18 or over must be present at the delivery address to receive your BRP, where they will need proof of their identity, such as a driving licence or passport.

Applying for a BRP from overseas (outside the UK)

If you are applying for a visa from outside the UK, where enrolling your biometric information again forms part of that application process, you will be asked to enrol your biometrics at an overseas VIsa Application Centre (VAC).

Having provided your biometrics at a VAC, you will be required to collect your BRP once your are in the UK. You must usually do this before expiry of the vignette sticker in your travel document or within 10 days of arriving the UK, whichever is later.

You should check your decision letter, where this will tell you to collect your BRP from a named Post Office branch or your sponsor, if you chose this option. When collecting your BRP, you will need to bring in your passport with your vignette sticker. You will get your sticker when your visa application is approved. You can opt to pick up your BRP from a different branch, but you will need to arrange this at the Post Office branch you want to use and pay a fee, provided the branch you want to use offers a BRP collection service.

You can nominate somebody else to collect your BRP, but only if you have a serious illness or disability preventing you from collecting it in person, where the Home Office may email you for evidence of this, such as a doctor’s letter. Your nominated person will not be allowed to collect your BRP if you cannot show proof if asked. The nominated person collecting your BRP must also provide your passport to show that you have entered the UK. Having nominated a person using the online link at GOV.UK, you will be notified within 5 working days if that person has been approved to collect your BRP.

You must be nominated to collect a child’s BRP, even if you are the child’s parent or legal guardian, unless you are named on their vignette sticker and also collecting your own BRP at the same time. Having made an online request to collect their BRP, where needed, the Home Office will tell you within 5 working days if you have been approved to do this.

How much does a BRP cost?

In addition to your visa application fee, it costs £19.20 to give your biometrics or to re-use this information if you have provided it before. You will be told if you need to pay this fee when you apply to extend your stay or to switch to a different visa from within the UK.

If you apply for a visa from outside the UK, the cost of enrolling your biometrics at a VAC appointment will be included in your visa application fee.

How long are BRPs valid for?

BRPs were previously valid for the duration of a person’s limited leave, or for up to a maximum of 10 years, or 5 years if under 16. However, BRPs are being incrementally replaced, where the Home Office aims to phase out physical documents before the end of 2024. For this reason, all newly issued BRPs expire no later than 31 December 2024.

After this date, instead of a visa applicant being given a physical BRP, a vignette containing a facial image will be issued in the form of an eVisa.

Why does my BRP say December 2024 expiry for my BRP – my permission is longer than this?

BRPs have been endorsed with an expiry date of 31 December 2024 for some time now, even where the individual’s permission to enter or remain in the UK has been granted beyond this date. This is because those with a BRP now have digital status. From 1 January 2025, you will be able to prove your UK immigration status online, without needing a BRP.

If you have a BRP with an expiry date of 31 December 2024, your rights and entitlements are unaffected if you have permission to stay in the UK that ends after that date, and you do not need to tell the Home Office if your BRP expires on that date.

Do children need to provide biometric information?

Applicants under the age of 18 are still required to provide biometric information, although the nature of this information will depend on their age bracket. Further, any child under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or someone aged 18 or over who has legal responsibility for them.

Under 16’s will be required to provide a scan of their fingerprints and a photograph of their face, but they will not need to give a signature. If the child is under the age of 6 they will not need to give their fingerprints either.

For those aged 16 and over, they will need to provide the same biometric information as an adult, namely a scan of their fingerprints, a digital photograph of their face and a signature.  

How long does it take to process a biometric residence permit?

How you get your biometric residence permit will depend on where you made your visa or immigration application. If you applied from inside the UK, your permit will be sent to you by courier, to the address you gave in your application, within 7 to 10 days of getting your decision letter from the Home Office saying that you can remain in the UK.

If you applied from outside the UK, you will need to collect your biometric residence permit once you are in the UK. You must do this before the vignette sticker in your travel document expires, or within 10 days of arriving in the UK, whichever is later.

You will be told in your decision letter where to collect the permit from, either a named post office branch, or your sponsor, if you chose this option when you applied. You may be liable to a fine if you fail to collect your permit within the permitted timeframe.

You must be aged 18 or over to collect a biometric residence permit. You must also be nominated to collect a child’s permit, even if you’re the child’s parent.

What happens if my BRP card has not arrived?

You should contact TNT, the delivery company, if your BRP has not arrived within 10 working days of receiving your Home Office decision letter. You will need the postcode of the address you gave in your visa application and the 9-number consignment number that can be found in emails from TNT and the Home Office BRP courier team.

If you missed the BRP delivery, you should contact TNT to arrange re-delivery within 30 days or it will be returned to the Home Office. However, if you have not got a consignment number, TNT is unable to help with your query or it has been more than 30 days since missing the delivery, you will need to tell the Home Office that your BRP has not arrived. If your BRP is being delivered to the Isle of Man, Isles of Scilly, or the Scottish Highlands or islands, your delivery will be arranged by TNT but carried out by Royal Mail. To track your BRP delivery, contact TNT to get the Royal Mail tracking number.

You can contact the Home Office about your BRP if your decision letter saying that you can remain in the UK arrived more than 10 working days ago. However, you should only contact the Home Office if any of the following apply:

  • you have not got a consignment number to track your delivery with the delivery company
  • you have already contacted the delivery company and they were not able to help you
  • you missed the delivery of your BRP more than 30 days ago.

You can contact the Home Office using its online form. You will need to provide your full name, date of birth and nationality, together with an email or postal address. You will also need your decision letter. The Home Office will email you to advise you on what to do next, where you will usually get a response within 5 working days, although this will take longer if you do not give an email address. You must not use this service if delivery has been attempted and you were left a card, or sent a text message or email. In these circumstances, you should contact the delivery company to rearrange delivery.

What do you need to do if your BRP is expiring?

The way in which you replace an expired BRP will depend on whether you are in the UK and what type of leave you have. If you have indefinite leave to be in the UK, you can use the BRP replacement service from within the UK, where you will usually get a decision on your application and sent a replacement BRP within 6 months of applying online.

If your visa is about to expire, you cannot use the BRP replacement service. You will need to apply to extend your visa or apply for a new visa instead. If approved, you will automatically get a new BRP. If you are applying to extend your stay or switch to another visa route, you must be in the UK to re-enrol your biometric information, although you may be told that your previously enrolled biometrics can be re-used.

If you are outside the UK, you cannot apply for a replacement BRP if it expires overseas. Instead, you will need to apply for a replacement BRP visa which will let you re-enter the UK only once. You will need to prove your identity at a VAC to complete your application, where you will usually get a decision on your application within 3 weeks. If your application is approved, your BRP will be sent to you with your decision letter. You can apply for a replacement BRP within 3 months of its expiry on your return, unless you have a good reason, for example, you were unable to return to the UK within that timeframe.

How do I renew or replace a biometric residence permit?

Once you receive your biometric residence permit, if there is a mistake in the length or conditions of your visa and you made your application from within the UK you can ask for an administrative review.

You can also report other problems online, for example, if your permit was damaged when it arrived or your name contains a spelling mistake. You will need to report any problems within 10 days, otherwise you may have to pay for a replacement. You must also report changes to any personal details.

If your biometric residence permit is lost or stolen, and it was valid for 3 or more months, you are again legally obligated to report this and to apply for a replacement from within the UK. You can face a financial penalty and be made to leave the UK if you do not apply for a replacement within a period of 3 months.

If your permit was valid for 3 months or less, you must still report it as lost or stolen, even if you do not intend to remain in the UK after its expiry date. Alternatively, if you plan to leave and re-enter the UK within 3 months of its expiry date you can apply for a replacement, or apply to extend your visa if you want to stay in the UK after its expiry date. If granted, you will automatically be provided with a new permit.

If your biometric residence permit is lost while you are outside the UK, you must still report this, but you will need to apply for a “replacement BRP visa”, which lets you re-enter the UK once only at a cost of £154. You can then apply for a replacement permit when you return to the UK.

How do you change address on your BRP?

If you have applied for a visa from inside the UK and want your BRP to be sent to a different postal address than the one you gave in your application, you will need to update your address details. If you do not have your decision letter yet, you will need to let the Home Office know that your address has changed. If your decision letter has already arrived, you will additionally need to tell the delivery company (TNT) that your address has changed, where you will get an email or text from TNT explaining how to do this.

As a BRP may take longer to arrive following a change of address, you must tell the Home Office and TNT as soon as your address changes. If your BRP is delivered to the wrong address because you did not update it, you will need to report a problem with your BRP.

Can you use your BRP to prove your right to work?

No, BRPs have been removed from the list of acceptable documents used by employers to conduct a manual right to work check, although a retrospective check will not be required if you used a physical document to demonstrate your right to work before 6 April 2022.

Apply for a Home Office Travel Document

You can apply for a document to travel outside the UK if:

  • you are not British 
  • you cannot use or get a passport from your country's national authorities 
  • your country's national authorities cannot give you a new passport  

It may take longer than usual to get a decision on your application. This is because of the home invasion of Ukraine. Do not book travel until you get your travel document.

Eligibility 

To apply you must be living in the UK because of one of the following:

  • you have permission to stay as a refugee (external link)
  • you have humanitarian protection and it has been officially accepted that you have a fear of your country's national authorities  
  • you are not recognised as a citizen of any country (a 'stateless person') and you have permission to stay (known as 'leave to remain') or are settled in the UK (known as 'indefinite leave to remain') 
  • you have permission to stay (known as 'leave to remain') or are settled in the UK (known as 'indefinite leave to remain'), but you cannot get a passport or travel document from your country's national authorities

Like millions of people in the U.S., you may be fortunate to work from home. ( Data show that the number of people working from home nearly tripled over the past few years). That may make you wonder whether you can claim a home office tax deduction on your federal income tax return. After all, you likely have some unreimbursed expenses. For example, you might pay for printer paper, ink, and other office supplies. Plus, your electric and utility bills are likely higher since you're home during the day. 

But the reality is not every taxpayer can claim the home office deduction. Here's what you should know about the home office tax deduction before you file your 2023 tax return.

Home office tax deduction: Who qualifies?

Some people who work from home can deduct their business-related expenses, and there is also something called the "home office tax deduction" that lets you write off expenses for the business use of your home. However, whether you can claim those tax breaks depends on your employment status.

Employees miss out. If you're a regular employee working from home, you can't deduct any of your related expenses on your tax return.

In the past, you could claim an itemized deduction for unreimbursed business expenses, including expenses for the business use of part of your home if they exceeded 2% of your adjusted gross income. However, that deduction was temporarily suspended. It's scheduled to go back into effect in 2026.

Home office tax deduction for self-employed people

Self-employed people can generally deduct office expenses on Schedule C (Form 1040) whether or not they work from home. This write-off covers office supplies, postage, computers, printers, and all the other ordinary and necessary things you need to run a home office.

The home office tax deduction is an often overlooked tax break for the self-employed that covers expenses for the business use of your home, including mortgage interest, rent, insurance, utilities, repairs, and depreciation. 

It doesn't matter what type of home you have (e.g., single family, townhouse, apartment, condo, mobile home, or boat.) You can also claim the home office tax deduction if you worked in an outbuilding on your property, such as an unattached garage, studio, barn, or greenhouse. 

Note: You cannot claim the home office tax deduction for any part of your home or property used exclusively as a hotel, motel, inn, or the like.

Claiming the home office tax deduction might lower your tax bill , but to qualify, you must use part of your home "regularly and exclusively" as your principal place of business. If you only work from home for part of the year, you can only claim the deduction for the period that you can satisfy the "regularly and exclusively" requirements.

"Regular use" means you use a specific area of your home (e.g., a room or other separately identifiable space) for business regularly. Incidental or occasional use of the space for business doesn't count.

"Exclusive use" means you use a specific area of your home only for your trade or business. The space doesn't have to be marked off by a permanent partition. You can't claim the home office deduction if you use the space for business and personal purposes. However, the exclusive use requirement might not apply if you use part of your home:

  • For the storage of inventory or product samples; or
  • As a daycare facility.

The space must also be used:

  • As your principal place of business for your trade or business;
  • To meet or deal with your patients, clients, or customers in the normal course of your trade or business; or
  • In connection with your trade or business if it's a separate structure that's not attached to your home.

How to calculate the home office deduction

If you qualify, there are two ways to calculate the home office deduction. 

  • Under the actual expense" method , you essentially multiply the expenses of operating your home by the percentage of your home devoted to business use. If you work from home for part of the year, only include expenses incurred during that time. 
  • Under the simplified method , you deduct $5 for every square foot of space in your home used for a qualified business purpose. Again, you can only claim the deduction for the time you work from home. 

For example, if you have a 300-square-foot home office (the maximum size allowed for this method), and you work from home for three months (25% of the year), your deduction is $375 ((300 x $5) x 0.25).

Tax Tip: If you use the simplified method, you can't depreciate the part of your home used for business. However, to the extent you qualify, you can still claim itemized deductions for mortgage interest, real property taxes, and casualty losses for your home without allocating them between personal and business use.

The deduction is claimed on Line 30 of Schedule C (Form 1040) . If you use your home for more than one business, file a separate Schedule C for each business. Don't combine your deductions for each business on a single Schedule C.

If you use the actual expense method to calculate the tax break, also complete Form 8829 and file it with the rest of your tax return. If you use more than one home for business, you can file a Form 8829 for each home or use the simplified method for one home and Form 8829 for others. Combine all amounts calculated using the simplified method and amounts calculated using Form 8829, and then enter the total on Line 30 of the Schedule C you file for the business.

Employees with a side business

If you're an employee at a "regular" job, but you also have your own side hustle, you can claim deductions for business expenses and the home office deduction for your own business — if you meet all the requirements. Being an employee doesn't mean you can't also claim the deductions you're entitled to as a self-employed person.

There is no direct line to the Home Office for a BRP application, but the process of contacting their outsourced company is outlined below:

If you intend to come to the UK for period of longer than six months, you may be required to hold a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) as proof of your immigration status.

You must collect your BRP within ten days of arriving in the UK (if you applied outside the UK). However, this timeline may be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you applied inside the UK, your BRP will be delivered by a courier service (TNT). If you need to contact BRP delivery team, you can call the below number:

  • TNT (Courier Service delivering the BRP) : +44 (0) 345 608 0630

It is recommended to contact TNT about your BRP if it has not arrived within ten days of receiving your decision letter, or if you wish to track or rearrange the delivery of the permit.

You should only contact the Home Office about your BRP if the following applies:

  • You have already contacted TNT and they were unable to help
  • You cannot track your delivery with a consignment number

Use the BRP service page to speak to the Home Office if the above situations apply to your case.

If you applied outside the UK and you intend to collect your BRP at a post office, you can use the post office general enquiries page if you need to speak with a customer service representative.

Once you have submitted an application for British citizenship to UKVI, you can expect to wait for between three and four months for a decision.

When you submit your citizenship application, you may be asked to submit your biometric information and supporting documents via the UK Visa and Citizenship Application Service (UKVCAS) website.

You should not contact UKVCAS about your citizenship application. You can contact UKVI using the general contact number inside the UK or outside the UK.

You can use your UKVCAS account to do the following:

  • Book an appointment to enrol your biometric information
  • Submit your supporting documents to be verified
  • Purchase additional visa application services
