JUSTIN BIEBER

March 11 | Rogers Arena

VANCOUVER – The one thing that hasn’t changed is the screaming.

It came in a shrill wall of sound, it engulfed everything, and swallowed Rogers Arena whole as soon as the lights went off.

It was predictable, and for Justin Bieber fans there was much cause for celebration on Friday night. And lots to scream about.

Bieber, 22, has upped his game tremendously with his latest album Purpose, showing himself ready to assume his true nature as a born-to-be pop star.

It wasn’t always so.

The couple of years that preceded Bieber’s poised Purpose were made of tumultuous tabloid fodder.

Purpose changed everything: a new image, a new sound, a new pop.

Fans came out in droves Friday for the second concert (and the first Canadian stop) on Bieber’s Purpose Tour, and there were arguably just as many trying to get in than actually set foot inside the arena.

Rogers Arena’s will call area was packed with frustrated fans who had bought tickets that were either fake or missing. You heard the word “StubHub” a lot, or “my friend left them here for me.” Gate attendants confirmed it was a mess.

But that was also predictable, considering the demand for Bieber in these parts.

Those who made it into the arena were treated to a pretty solid show.

“I know what it’s like to fall,” Bieber said in a video intro that had him tumbling down on the screen. Bieber talked about finding his true self and true purpose, about his failings and his redemption.

He entered riding inside a glass cube, writing on the inside of the translucent walls, during Mark My Words.

The bass was earth-shattering as the venue exploded with the sound of Jack U’s Where Are U Now, Bieber catapulted from below the floor as an assortment of dancers pulled out a show worthy of Cirque du Soleil.

It was a high flying, highly entertaining affair.

Bieber glided and skittered around the stage, half-singing into his headset microphone, dressed in a robe-like hoodie and ripped jeans, sporting bleached blonde hair.

A five-piece band, platforms, video cages, rolling ramps, crisp LED screens, pyro, strobes, suspended acrobats, Tron-esque body armour, and even lasers – Bieber’s show was served with everything but the kitchen sink.

This wasn’t about Bieber’s vocal performance (the fans arguably sang more than he did), and the vocals were often either pre-taped or heavily effected.

But it was a soulful show nonetheless, and it was all about delivering a concert experience as spectacular as possible.

“Don’t forget that I’m human, don’t forget that I’m real,” he sang on I’ll Show You, taking a cue from The Weeknd in style and presentation.

It started to feel more “real” on oldie Boyfriend, and it moved away from mechanical choreography on a great acoustic guitar version of Love Yourself that Bieber sang on a red velvet couch (during which he also partially forgot the words).

“Don’t you guys wish you had this guy’s job, eh?” Bieber quipped as a tech helped replace a monitor pack clipped to his backside that wasn’t working properly.

Bieber talked to fans between a few acoustic songs, he pointed at signs and picked up phones from audience members and snapped a couple selfies.

It was charming, unassuming, and the least calculated part of the evening.

You could feel thousands of pairs of jealous eyes boring into a fan named Marissa, who was picked from the audience to be serenaded by Bieber on the couch for One Less Lonely Girl.

There were stunts that pushed the show to ridiculous heights, as on Company, where Bieber and his dancers, dressed in boho grunge style, hopped around on a huge suspended trampoline above the crowd.

It was impossible to – ahem – suspend our disbelief seeing Bieber pull a few back flips without skipping a single word of the song.

But all in all it was entertaining and the songs on Purpose are excellent – smooth and steady, atmospheric and deep.

For 90 minutes Bieber made Rogers Arena his confession booth (Life Is Worth Living), his playground (What Do You Mean), and his club (a revamped Baby), and there was nothing he or his fans had to feel Sorry about on their way out.

Justin Bieber is a popular Canadian teen pop and R&B singer-songwriter. Known for his devoted followers, the “Beliebers,” the teen idol has worked with the who’s who in pop culture.

During elementary and high school, Bieber learned to play the piano, guitar, drums, and the trumpet. At age 12, after placing second in a local talent show singing Ne-Yo’s “So Sick,” Bieber’s mother, Mallette, began to upload the singer’s performances to YouTube.

In mid-2007, marketing executive Scooter Braun accidentally clicked on one of Bieber’s videos, which ultimately resulted in the young singer signing with Braun and R&B singer Usher’s Raymond Braun Media Group. Whilst still recording his full-length debut, the singer issued his first single “One Time” in July 2009. Reaching No. 12 on the Canadian Hot 100 and No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, the single catapulted Bieber to international success at the age of 15.

The EP My World followed in November 2009, spawning the singles “One Less Lonely Girl,” “Love Me,” and “Favorite Girl.” Following a host of high-profile TV appearances, the release was certified platinum in the U.S. and double platinum in Canada and the UK. Toward the tail end of 2009, Justin Bieber performed Stevie Wonder’s “Someday at Christmas” at the White House for President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

Ahead of his album My World 2.0, Bieber released the smash hit single “Baby” featuring rapper Ludacris. Issued in March 2010, My World 2.0 topped the U.S. Billboard 200, making Bieber the youngest person since Stevie Wonder to reach the top spot, as well as the first act since the Beatles to have a debut album reach No. 1.

Spawning the singles “Never Let You Go,” “Eenie Meenie,” “Somebody to Love,” and “U Smile,” the My World 2.0’s R&B style earned positive reviews from critics and later a 2011 Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album. The album’s success was not limited to the U.S. and Canada, and Bieber embarked on his “My World Tour” after the release to reach his international fan base.

The album My World Acoustic arrived in October 2010, featuring several acoustic covers of previous songs, followed by the 3-D music biopic Justin Bieber: Never Say Never in February 2011. Bieber’s Christmas-themed album Under the Mistletoe appeared in November 2011, once again topping the Billboard 200 and generating significant buzz.

Released in June 2012, Bieber’s second full-length album Believe marked a move away from his teen-pop audience and toward a more dance- and R&B-inspired style. With production from Diplo, Darkchild, and Max Martin, the album spawned the Top 10 hit singles “Boyfriend,” “As Long as You Love Me” featuring Big Sean, and “Beauty and a Beat” featuring Nicki Minaj. The album became the singer’s fourth No. 1 album and was followed once again by an acoustic album, entitled Believe Acoustic.

In October of 2013, Bieber announced to his fans that he would release a new track every Monday until Christmas Day, when his new film Justin Bieber’s Believe would come out — a sequel to his first film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. This round of singles kicked off with “Heartbreaker” followed by “All That Matters,” “Hold Tight,” and others.

The final release in the holiday series was “Confident,” with a special feature by Chance the Rapper. That day, Bieber also announced that all 10 songs would appear on an upcoming album Journals, on top of five other unreleased tracks. Those five additional tracks featured big names like Lil Wayne and Future, and the album was released to massive cheers from fans for exclusive purchase on iTunes.

February 2015 saw the release of “Where Are Ü Now,” featuring Jack Ü (a duo including Skrillex and Diplo). The track rose up to the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and even earned Bieber a Grammy. Yet even that success paled in comparison to his announcement of his fourth studio album Purpose, which he teased with a new single called “What Do You Mean?”

“What Do You Mean?” became Bieber’s first number one single in the U.S., and he set a Guinness World Record as the youngest solo male artist to debut at the Hot 100’s number one spot. The song reached the number one spot on iTunes within five minutes of its release. The third single from Purpose, “Love Yourself,” is an acoustic ballad with some of Bieber’s best lyrics and melodies yet. When Purpose came out on November 13, 2015, it debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 — a career-crowning moment for most, but the sixth album of Bieber’s to do so.

April 2017 saw the unexpected release of the remix “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, which featured Bieber singing in Spanish. This remix shook the music industry, rising to the top of charts worldwide and marking a merging of the Spanish- and English-listening markets.

2017 marked some of the most iconic collaborations yet in Bieber’s career, including an appearance on DJ Khaled’s single “I’m The One” with Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne. He also teamed up with BloodPop to release the single “Friends” in August of that year.

In 2019, Bieber surprised everyone at Coachella when he appeared on stage for the first time in two years. Less than a month later, he released a single with Ed Sheeran called “I Don’t Care,” which became a worldwide hit in a short time. On July 11, 2019, he featured on “Bad Guy,” a remix of the breakthrough hit by Billie Eilish.

In 2020, he released the docu-series Justin Bieber: Seasons on YouTube, which documented parts of his life less visible to the public until then: his marriage, his music, and his struggles with Lyme disease. It received over 32 million in the first week alone, breaking YouTube’s all-time records. Bieber followed this by announcing his fifth studio album Changes, which came out on Valentine’s Day 2020.

Since then, Bieber has released singles with Ariana Grande, Drake, and countless others — and also found time to record Freedom, an EP inspired by gospel music that came out on Easter 2021. He continues to break all-time records for Billboard music charts, Spotify, and other platforms worldwide. It’s hard to name a bigger superstar in the world today, and you have a chance to catch him in concert this year — don’t miss the opportunity.

I saw Justin Bieber perform live a few years ago, at the O2 arena in London. It was long before Bieber had begun to cement a rather bad reputation for himself, so I went to the concert with the doe eyed innocence of a young Belieber excited to see her idol. Even now, despite the bad press, there is no doubt that Bieber is an extremely talented artist and that his concerts are one hell of a show- a once in a lifetime experience. Bieber proved that he had real, as opposed to manufactured, talent on stage. He sung all his songs live, and his voice was undeniably good. Even more impressive was his dance moves. Bieber dominated the stage, dancing round and showing off some expert moves with seemingly total ease. Classic such as ‘Baby’ and ‘Boyfriend’ were all obviously performed. When Bieber performed ‘One Less Lonely Girl’, he brought a random audience member on stage with him. He sung to her and presented her with a beautiful bouquet, breaking young hearts everywhere. The girls standing in front of me were actually crying with jealousy at this point (when Bieber had first appeared on stage, it was tears of happiness). The highlight of the show was when mentor Usher appeared to perform ‘Somebody to Love’, the duo’s dancing was off the chain at this point!

Hi Justin Bieber, I wanted to tell you that I have no idea what I'm doing RIGHT now, but anyways I've heard you've went to Philly for a concert. I wish I was there, my heart is broken right now cause I wasn't able to go. I thought I was but I guess my family just didn't have money for me and my twin sister at all. (Even though I'm still belieber and my twin isn't!) We only live a hour and a half away from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia Pennsylvania (PA). Wow!!! Well, I really wanted to tell you that I want you to come back to Philly and perform this year AGAIN. Please. I don't want to rush you but I never went to your performance. I'm only 12 years old, I have a twin, five sisters. My older sister doesn't even act like a sister, and I've never done anything fun, like nothing exciting, fun, in my whole life. And all I want, at least, I want to do is go to your performance In Philadelphia PA. It would be very great and I'll never forget about it and you. Well it would be cool if you came back to Philly again, hopefully I don't miss it, cause this time since my mom don't have money I'll save up money for us four to see you. (If its possible for my broke self.) But see yah Justin Bieber, I don't know how to end this paragraph. Ummmmmm byeeeeeee, luv u! lol :)

Justin seemed kind of out of it during at least the first half of the show. He took two pretty long breaks (at least 5 minutes) where it seemed like the dancers and other people on stage didn't really know what was going on. At one point he just stood on stage in silence for several minutes facing the back, confusing the crew, perfomers, and audience. I think he might be sick because he was coughing a lot and lip-synced quite a bit. He also let the audience sing a lot of his songs. Some highlights were when he played the guitar and sang acoustic versions of some songs, his drum solo, and his performance of upbeat hits like Company, Sorry, and Baby. He didn't interact as much with his audience as I had expected. Unfortunately, he is not doing OLLG during the Purpose tour. He sings really well and the audience is very engaged, possibly more than himself. I recommend going IF, like me, you've been a fan for a while and really want to see him. If you just like his music, it's not worth it because it's not a very captivating performance and it won't be worth the money. Additionally his merchandise definitely isn't that nice, especially considering the cost.

Last night was the best night of my life I think I'm still in shock tbh. Justin looked so happy and healthy last night and that's all I could ever ask for. He may mime for some songs but that doesn't even bother me just breathing the same air and being in the same room as him is a dream come true. Although I fainted just before he performed cold water because I was too claustrophobic I still got straight back up as soon as I heard the start of cold water and carried on having an amazing time even though I was not feeling well. Justin sounded absolutely amazing throughout the whole of the show, his dances were perfect aswell as the dancers. He was having such a good time you could tell by the smile on his face throughout the whole show and the best part was that everyone went silent as soon as he started talked to show him we all respected him and what he had to say. I'll never forget when he made eye contact with me when I put down my phone and put my hands into a heart during purpose. It was the best night of my life and the most amazing 16th birthday present I could ever wish for. I love him so much and I can't wait to see him again. Xxxx

Can anyone who haven't go to a Justin's concert write a comment??

My name is Diana, I'm 22 and I have never going to a Justin's concert!!! I just read all the previous comments and my tears just fell down... because the fact to see and meet Justin personally, is my biggest dream but I BELIEVE, I BELIEVE that one day I'm not going to write ''I haven't go'', the next comment will be ''I went to a Justin's''

Unfortunately, I didn't see Justin growing up during his tours, but I followed his entire life and now, I have among my stuffs a T-shirt of Purpose Tour and his perfume ''Someday''.

It might sound crazy, but I have have times when I speak lonely, just preparing the time when I'll face Justin and imagine all the conversation, because I have to make true this phrase that it's only mine ''I WILL MEET YOU, OR I WILL'' and this will happen, that is a promess. And when that time running, I'll just tell him... my life is very completely now...

I loved all the comments and I just grateful because I know my idol is a very loved person

Seeing Justin Bieber perform live was one of the most fun times of my life. All of the lights, and videos/pictures that they put up on stage are amazing. Being able to be so close to a famous artist and hearing them perform is beyond incredible. Hearing his voice live and seeing him sing through all of his emotions is something that not a lot of people will get to experience. As well as singing Justin also will perform on the drums or piano in some of his songs. Not to mention he is also a great dancer on stage. Justin Bieber is great to see live, because you feel like he connects with every single person in the audience. He tries to make everyone laugh and smile and have a good time. He is very calm on stage, in front of thousands of screaming girls. All concerts, not only Justin Bieber concerts are fun times for anyone, no matter what age! Going to see someone sing and perform live is just incredible. I hope this interests you fans in seeing him live. You will have one of the best nights of your life at a Justin Bieber concert!

The show was fantastic. Great sound, amazing lighting, talented musicians and dancers... even dazzling fireworks.

However, the main character was not up to the show's standards.

Bieber did not engage with his audience, did not smile once, did not put his heart in it.

Screaming girls didn't notice that the object of their desire hardly sang... since they wet the ones singing each song by heart.

His younger fans don't care if he shows that he doesn't enjoy his chosen line of work. Parents who ent with them think he should respect his public.

If he is bored, he should study to be something else.

On the other hand, the organization was pitiful. The guys showing people around did not know their way around. According to one of them a friend's row "did not exist", and to another, mine "was nowhere tocbe found". People were standing on the limpy chairs which made it hard for smaller children to watch the concert.

In short, I would have rather stay home, and the show had no passion, but my kid's enthusiasm was worth it.

Really disappointed in this show, we paid in excess of £700 for 4 tickets to take my two daughters to their first ever concert and I was disgusted how Justin spoke to his fans and threw his mic on the floor and stormed off stage!

I've seen Adele and Coldplay this year who were both very down to earth, humble and appreciated their fans by the bucket load. Justin ought to take some tips from these far superior artists on how to work a crowd and show gratitude.

Also not very impressed that Justin mimed to around 80% of the show, not even attempting to disguise the fact by being bothered to hold his mic to his mouth, as he's not a very energetic dancer out of breath most of the time I didn't see any reason for him to mime so much, the only thing I did notice was him floating around the stage on his massive ego the whole evening.

I won't even be able to listen to his music after this.

He really doesn't deserve his fans.

Sunday, October 2nd I went to the Purpose World Tour Copenhagen in Telia Parken.

I went to the show with my best friend and we had a really good time.

When we arrived to Telia Parken, there was so many Beliebers, it was incredible. Well, we waited in line for the doors to open, and when the doors opened we went inside the Telia Parken. The stadium was huge. There was so many people in there.

After the most people found their seats, the opening band came on. It was a band from UK/Liverpool, they were called Mic Lowkey.

After a while the show finally started. Justin opened his show with his first song from his Purpose Album, Mark My Words. The audience were so turned up - when you looked over the stadium, there were lights from phones everywhere, it looked like stars, it was so beautiful.

Well the show was incredible, Justin was in a good mood and the audience was awesome. So the show was amazing.
