Know more about the island of kauai.

Kauai is the fourth largest island of Hawaii and driving it around for one day is not possible. However, you can still enjoy the island even when you have limited time. You’ll only need to create an itinerary that will enable you to go to various places. To ensure that you make the most of your time while you are in Kauai, you can call me to arrange a tour for you.

I offer 6-hour tours of the North and Southwest sides of Kauai. The Waimea Canyon tour allows you to explore southwest Kauai with its breathtaking scenery. Or, see the lush green areas on the North Shore tour as well as famous Kauai waterfalls and some of Hawaii’s best beaches.

Kauai has a special place in the hearts and minds of many visitors because it is one of the oldest Hawaiian islands. It also is the greenest among the islands of Hawaii, covered by mountains and forest. It is not surprising that Kauai has become a popular destination for tourists.

My tours are perfect for passengers on a cruise ship with limited time at port or tourists who only have half a day on the island. If you are thinking of visiting the island, I can help make your stay more memorable and hassle-free with my tours. You will enjoy the ultimate experience in this beautiful place. Also, learn about some amazing hidden gems while you explore this paradise.

Only if you think he went above and beyond your expectations. In America, tipping is a way of acknowledging a job well done. In general any person in a hotel, a cab/taxi/uber, airport, a dining table will be working for tips and they are greatly appreciated. I think of a tip like applause. You pay to go see a performance and your tip is the applause, and who doesn’t love a standing ovation? You can google appropriate tipping but for me a $20 tip per person, per day would be a suggested tip for me or any guide you use anywhere for a personally guided tour like I give, if you are so inclined.

The island of Kauai has many beautiful sights and natural wonders that will suit any taste. You can either relax, explore or dive into adventures while you’re here. There are a wide variety of Hawaiian activities on the Island, the best one will depend on what you enjoy the most. Surely, you’ll get to experience it in Kauai!

Kauai is the ideal place for people of all ages. Adults will love the natural wonders, and kids will enjoy exploring mountains and beaches alike. From relaxing to new adventures, Kauai has much to offer every visitor.

The North Shore is a great place to see natural waterfalls and enjoy all that Kauai has to offer from the shoreline as well as some good food. The Waimea Canyon offers you a chance to experience a majestic view of Kauai waterfalls, like the beautiful Waipo’o Falls. You will also be able to see what it feels like on top of a mountain with breathtaking views stretching out into infinity before your eyes.

On Kauai, there are innumerable unforgettable activities and attractions. The wonderful culture, people, and foods are a great bonus! You may be wondering if there is one particular place that you must visit while on the island. It all depends on your personal preferences and desires.

Below are 7 things you should not miss in Kauai according to Travel Channel .

1. Waimea Canyon

Visit Waimea Canyon Drive for many wonderful lookout points. You’ll get your picture-perfect moments from the overlook. If you’re looking for something even more impressive, take one of the trails that wind throughout the valley offering even bigger views.

2. Allerton Garden and Lawai Bay

If you want to get beautiful views of the south, consider Law Beach. The beach backs up to Allerton Garden and features great sunsets.

3. Na Pali Coast

The fifteen-mile Cliffs coast offers awe-inspiring views sprawled out along the coastline. You may also see whales while you view this natural wonder.

4. Hanalei Bay

If you’re visiting Kauai, a must-see is the Hanalei Bay on the northern coast. The beach provides ample space for day-trippers, snorkelers, and sometimes even surfers.

5. Farmers’ Markets

Farmers’ markets are abundant on the island and great for a fun walk from town. Sheets of fresh fruit like local pineapple await you there.

6. Acai Bowls

Make sure to try the perfect tropical treat that will make your mouth water. It’s a fruit-filled bowl that is Instagram-worthy.

7. Trying Poke

Poke is a traditional Hawaiian meal. It’s a bit like Sushi in a bowl. The number of poke varieties available is overwhelming, but you can choose by how you prefer your ahi.

The best way to experience things with your Kauai tour is by talking with me about your interests so we can plan a tour for you .

There are many activities on the island of Kauai. The number one activity is just exploring this beautiful place. You’ll get to see a variety of natural wonders, experience incredible adventures, enjoy delicious food and culture and so much more while you explore this paradise.

Other popular activities include hiking (with or without waterfalls), watching dolphins, helicopter tours over Napali Coast, scuba diving, or snorkeling at any of the amazing beaches on the east side like Tunnels Beach or Ke’e beach. If you want something different from your typical tropical vacation then try paddle boarding in Anini Beach Park. The place is suitable for beginners attempting to do this for the first time. You can even do this while enjoying the views and spotting tropical reef fish, eels, seahorses, eagle rays, green sea turtles, and different types of fish.

Another great activity is a visit to any farmers market, where they sell fresh produce, flowers, honey, and homemade items like jams & jellies, pickles & relish, and locally made crafts. These markets are open daily and are great places to explore the culture while enjoying fresh fruit usually source by locals directly from the region.

That is a question that I always get from clients. The answer to how many days in Kauai depends on what you want to do and see while you are here. You will probably need at least two full, consecutive days if your plan includes exploring the Napali Coast by boat or helicopter tour. You would also need more than one day if your plan includes taking in the sights and enjoying more than one activity or adventure on this big island.

I recommend a minimum of three days for any first-time visitor to Kauai. As for me, it’s best to try to stay a week on Kauai as it gives you time to get out and explore things at your own pace without rushing around too much from one place to another. That is my personal preference though! Your mileage may vary depending upon what exactly are your plans when you visit.

When you have limited time though, know that I offer tours where you can still enjoy Kauai in just six hours . We will maximize your stay and make sure that it will still be remarkable. Kauai is an amazing place for anyone looking for outdoor adventure, relaxation or even just time catching up with family and friends. So enjoy yourself while experiencing what Kauai has to offer.

The best time to visit Kauai is from April to June and September to November. In the off-peak months, the weather is still very comfortable without as many tourists around. The weather from September to November is equally beautiful with fewer tourists and more events and festivals. Since it’s the low season airfare and hotel rates drop during this time. Prices are slightly more expensive during the peak season, they become cheaper after the peak season ends and before families begin their summer travels. But any time of year can be a great time to go as long as you plan ahead and pick your activities wisely based on weather conditions for a given month or day.

It’s also important to check out weather conditions before your island adventure. This is for you to know what type of activities you can do and what clothing to bring with you. You don’t want to get caught off guard without the proper gear, especially if it is raining! Places to bookmark in your weather app would be Waimea, Poipu, Kapaa and Princeville.

Only on the tours originating from the cruise ships do I combine the tours but I do offer a premium private tour for those wanting the privacy and attention not found on the motor coaches from the ships.(See Kauai cruise ship passenger tour) . I also go where the motorcoaches don’t go on the Waimea Canyon State Park tours.

Warm sunshine and gentle rains are ideal conditions for a healthy green environment. While Hawaii is well known for its sunny, dry weather, Kauai’s climate includes periodic showers that provide the island with the necessary moisture.

Whether you are visiting during the winter or summer, sun exposure should be a consideration when planning your Kauai vacation. Poipu and Waimea on the Southside are ideal for sunny days. The driest areas on Kauai are the southern part of the island, like Poipu or Waimea and Kekaha. But even if rain showers pop up from time to time – these tend to pass quickly through with sunshine returning soon after.

However, it’s always best to check the forecast or ask locals for advice. Spending hours taking safety measures like researching the weather is all worth it. Even if there is rain on one side, it can be dry and sunny just a few miles away! So do your research in advance to ensure that weather conditions are perfect for what you plan to do while visiting Kauai.

Kauai has relatively mild weather year-round with warm temperatures, trade winds, and little seasonal temperature variation. But there is a rainy season that runs from November to March which can sometimes extend into April depending on how the seasons progress in Hawaii.

Rain is beneficial to the island environment by providing moisture for growth and replenishing groundwater. The rain in Kauai provides various benefits that tourists also enjoy. The rain makes the beautiful waterfalls flow and refreshes the flowers to make them bloom. Also, a rainbow may also appear after some showers.

The best way to tour around Kauai is by car . Driving through all four corners of the island will give easy access to different locations. It is also a great sightseeing opportunity.

There are many public buses on Kauai and they are affordable. However, they don’t always go to most of the tourists’ destinations. Buses stop near hotels and the airport, but attractions, such as Napali Coast, can be difficult to reach without a car. You can also check the public transportation schedule if you wish to try this option. They have detailed info included with per adult fee, seniors and kids get a discounted rate. It is surely another level of experience to explore a place with its public transportation.

Another way to get around Kauai is by booking guided tours with companies like mine. I understand that a lot of tourists do not have much time to do all the research on where to go or where to rent a car. That’s why I started my company, to make sure everyone can still have the chance to explore the beauty of Kauai even with a limited time. I want everyone to feel what I did and why I moved here. Everyone deserves the chance to experience what Kauai has to offer.

I’ll bring you to the spectacular places on the Island while giving insights about Kauai with interesting stories. Kauai Tour Guy is all about convenience and enjoyment. If you are looking for the best way to get around Kauai, then book a tour with us right away!

Hiring a tour guide is beneficial in many ways. With limited time, you will not have to spend it checking where to go or how to get there. You can sit back and relax while I drive you around the island showing what Kauai has to offer at its best. If you are the driver you do not want to miss out on the beautiful scenery because your eyes should be on the road.

Below are just a few of the reasons why you should hire me:

Flexibility Since I offer private tours , you can choose the places you want to go to, and which ones not to. I do have pre pre-arranged itineraries for Waimea Canyon and the North Shore , but you can let me know if there is a special request. I’ll surely give my best to accommodate it whenever possible.

Affordable tours at a reasonable price point You may be thinking that doing the tour on your own and renting a car is much cheaper than hiring a tour guide. Truth is, considering the convenience a tour guide offers, the expense is much less. You surely don’t want to end up finishing your limited time in the island trying to figure out the routes around the island or researching where to go, much less getting lost.

Saves Time When you hire me, you’ll save so much of your time. Time is important, not only do I arrive on time but I also make sure your tour is convenient and packed with great destinations. You also don’t need to spend time learning or figuring things out on your own. You can always let me know what interests you and I can always give sound advice or arrange it when needed.

Useful Insights All places have distinct traditions, having me as a tour guide ensures that you know these. It’s always best to learn and pay respect to the culture of the locals. This way you’ll be able to value the experience even more.

The best area for your stay while in Kauai will always depend on your purpose of stay and the activities you wish to do. You’ll have to identify below to make sure you get the accommodation that suits your needs:

  • Budget Knowing your budget will help you filter out your searches. There’s no need to check on accommodations that are out of the budget. It’s either a waste of time or ending up booking something that is out of your allotted budget.
  • Travel Destination This is very important as it will save you a lot. You surely don’t want to book a room that is far from public transportations when you don’t have a car with you. You’ll end up wasting a lot of your time and money. Also, if you wish to spend more time in a certain city then it’s only reasonable to book a stay there than to the next city.
  • Number of Companions If you are traveling with a family, you might want to book an apartment or hostel where you’ll have access to the kitchen. However, if it’s just you or if you are a couple with a few days’ stay then paying for a hotel can be worth it.
  • Activities Of course staying in a place where your activities are, is always the best way to go. You will not have to think about getting around and it’s more cost-efficient this way as well. This can be helpful especially when you are going on an adventure or if there’s something that requires physical exertion like hiking trails.
  • Accommodation Expectation It’s important to check on your preferences. If you are the type who likes a certain comfort then make sure that whatever accommodations you book have everything as per your expectations. Budget and expectations usually do not match, sometimes you have to compromise one.

Once you have all these details with you, then you can start your search. You can also check on  Kauai’s Hotel reviews prior to booking your stay.

15 Best Tours in Kauai, Hawaii

Nicknamed ‘The Garden Isle’ due to the dense tropical rainforest that blankets most of the island, Kauai is a natural wonderland that draws tourists from all over the world.

It’s part of the larger Hawaiian archipelago, and not surprisingly, has been the shooting site for hundreds of movies and television shows, some of which date back many decades.

The Nā Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon are among the most dramatic and often-visited of the island’s sights, but with so much else to do and see, you’ll likely have trouble fitting it all into your busy schedule.

Below are 15 of the best tours in Kauai.

1. Traditional Luau and Sunset Dinner Package

Kauai Luau And Sunset Dinner

For those looking to kick off their Hawaiian adventure with an unforgettable evening of food, dance and music, this traditional sunset luau and dinner deal is a great choice.

It’s family-friendly fun that you won’t likely forget, but be warned, due to its popularity, spots fill up quickly, so it’s best to book in advance if possible.

Dinner includes island-style roast pig and plenty of fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables.

Everything is included except door-to-door transportation and gratuities, but because it’s so well-known, finding your own ride won’t be a problem. Ask for assistance at your hotel’s reception desk.

2. Sightseeing Flight to Nā Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon

Kauai - Sightseeing Flight Over Napali Coast & Waimea Canyon

The majestic sights you’ll see on your trip to Kauai will be second to none, but when viewed from thousands of feet above, they’ll be especially breathtaking.

Your pilot-guide will give you an interesting narration of the area’s history and geology and how it relates to the things you’ll be viewing. Sites include the stunning and pristine Nā Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon.

Round trip transportation is available for guests who’ve signed up for the tour aboard their cruise ship. Although the flight lasts a little less than an hour, you’ll feel like you’ve gotten great value for your money.

View Prices & Reviews

3. Full-Day Fern Grotto River Cruise and Tour

Wailua River, Kauai

This seven-hour tour is the perfect way to take in as much of Kauai’s beauty as possible on its eastern and northern shores.

The tour’s highlights include a scenic drive in an air-conditioned van, a boat cruise to famous Fern Grotto and the nearby lighthouse, and for those who’d like to see more from above, an optional guided flight is available too.

Everything is included except food, so bring a few bucks because you’ll get hungry.

It’s also wise to bring a few layers of clothing, a hat, and sunglasses; the weather can change quickly and when the clouds aren’t out the sun can be brutal.

4. Kauai South Shore Picnic, Snorkel and Whale Watch Combo

Kauai Whale

Considered by many former guests to be the best snorkel tour on Kauai’s south shore, this four-hour tour packs a lot of unforgettable activities into a half-day.

You’ll get up close and personal with some of the area’s most popular and beautiful marine animals, including sea turtles, dolphins and the humpback whales who frequent the clear waters at certain times of the year.

All the training and equipment you’ll need are provided by the staff, but this tour is only open to participants that are at least eight-years-old.

Getting so close to these natural wonders is something you won’t soon forget, so book in advance to reserve your spot.

5. Half-Day Morning Bus Tour to Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon

Half-day tours are great ways to see and do lots of great things while leaving a good portion of the day open for other adventures.

Majestic Waimea Canyon is often referred to as the Pacific’s Grand Canyon. It was formed eons ago during the island’s volcanically active past.

Though the canyon is the tour’s main attraction, you’ll also see the Spouting Horn and other amazing natural features for which the area is known.

You’ll see most of the sites via bus, but there will be ample opportunity to get outside, stretch those legs and get some fresh air too.

6. Catamaran Snorkeling Cruise with Lunch to the Nā Pali Coast

Na Pali Coast Catamaran Snorkeling Cruise With Lunch

Catamarans are exotic boats that slide through the water with ease, seemingly defying the laws of nature. As luck would have it, there’s no better way to see the Nā Pali Coast than from the deck of one of these multi-hulled cruisers.

Your ocean vantage point will give you and your travel companions unrestricted views of the picturesque beaches, dense jungles and magnificent geologic formations for which the area is known.

Swimming and snorkeling are also offered if you’d like to dive into the crystal waters, but if you’re content lounging on deck with a cocktail that’s okay too.

7. Luau Kalamaku with Buffet Dinner

Luau Kalamaku

A perennial island favorite due to its amazing scenery, traditional music and dance, and the amazing buffet dinner, Luau Kalamaku is one of those popular tourist activities that really shouldn’t be passed up on your island trip.

The luau takes place on the Kilohana Plantation, which is a focal point of much of the area’s history.

The tour includes food and drink, an amazing show, and even a ride on the plantation’s train, from which you’ll enjoy a narration on the area’s history and see some arts and crafts made by the locals.

8. Eco-Friendly Zip-Line Adventure in Poipu

Eco-Friendly 8-Line Zipline Adventure In Poipu

Kauai’s dramatic topography was seemingly made with zip-liners in mind. If soaring hundreds of feet over jungles, gorges and volcanic rock peaks suspended by only a thin wire sounds like a good way to spend a few hours, then this tour is for you.

Featuring eight distinct lines that crisscross over the area, you’ll get a healthy dose of adrenaline and see Kauai’s scenery from a birds-eye-view that few get to experience.

The tour lasts 2 ½ hours and includes all the equipment and instruction you’ll need to have a safe and unforgettable time.

Dress accordingly and don’t forget a few bottles of water and some sunblock.

9. Nā Pali Sea Cliff Kayak Tour

Pali Sea Cliff Kayak Tour

Due to the physical nature of this tour, it’s only recommended for the relatively young and those that are of above average fitness.

At five hours, the tour will cover nearly four miles of scenic coastline, including views of towering cliffs and most likely visits from a few of the area’s marine creatures – like dolphins, stingrays, and even whales if you go during the right season.

You’ll have plenty of time to relax and swim in a few of the area’s clear water coves that’ll remind you of the cover of a glossy tourism brochure.

The tour comes with a deli-style picnic lunch on a secluded beach, which will give you enough energy for the long but scenic paddle home.

10. Full-Day Waimea Canyon and Wailua River Tour

Waimea Canyon

After you’ve taken in the majestic scenery of Waimea Canyon and the Wailua River, you won’t be surprised to learn that they’ve been popular filming sites for Hollywood movies and television shows dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.

This full-day tour from Kauai will include portions on the road and the river itself.

The Wailua River and canyon are often referred to as ‘the Grand Canyon of the Pacific,’ due to their dramatic majesty and the amazingly colored, stratified rock cliffs that loom over them.

The resorts at Poipu, Queen Victoria’s profile, and Nawiliwili Harbor are also on the schedule.

The tour lasts between nine and ten hours and includes everything except food and drink.

11. Hana Day-Tour

Road to Hana

Starting in Lahaina, this 9 ½-hour guided tour will lead you down the Road to Hana, which is perhaps the most scenic and visited road in Maui.

You’ll snake through the twists and turns in your air-conditioned bus while your guide points out historically and geologically significant areas.

The road is especially known for the dozens of one-lane bridges that cross many rock and jungle-filled gorges; you’ll get some amazing photo ops at some of the many waterfalls that dot the area.

Door-to-door transportation is included, as are breakfast and lunch.

Make sure your phone is charged and your camera has plenty of film before setting off.

12. Kauai Waterfall Picnic Tour and Off-Road Adventure

Kauai Waterfall Picnic Tour And Off-Road Adventure

If you’re a movie buff, this off-road adventure tour is for you; it includes stops at a few of the filming locations used for modern classics like Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Some of the roads are a bit on the rough side. Since you’ll need to do some hiking in order to get to some of the gorgeous swimming spots you’ll visit, this tour is best enjoyed by the relatively young, fit and fearless.

Lunch is included and consists of a sandwich buffet with all the fixings, which will replenish those calories you expended.

13. Nā Pali Sightseeing Sunset Dinner Cruise

Nā Pali Sightseeing Sunset Dinner Cruise

Though you’ve already heard about the Nā Pali Coast and maybe even experienced it, there’s something extra special about it when viewed from the deck of a gently swaying boat as the sun fades behind the western sky.

If you’re a guy who’s looking to make it up to his significant other for putting up with you leaving the toilet seat up for all these years, this romantic evening cruise with dinner is the perfect way to say, “thank you” and “I’m sorry” all at once.

The four-hour tour will take your breath away; even though the boat is capable of carrying nearly 100 passengers, the tour is restricted to 49 to give guests a more intimate feel.

14. Zip-Line, Kayak and Hiking Tour

Zipline - Kayak - Hiking Tour

For nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and those just looking to do a bit of communing with Mother Nature, this adventure-packed tour would be a wise addition to your itinerary.

Due to the physical exertion required, guests must be pretty darn fit; the tour includes a two-mile walk, 90-minute kayak, and multiple trips down a zip-line or two.

You’ll also get to ride in a wagon and eat lunch in a tree house high in the jungle canopy, after which you’ll hike to a waterfall and enjoy some swimming and relaxation.

Before you book, make sure you and your travel companions meet the age and weight restrictions for this tour.

15. All-Inclusive Kauai to Pearl Harbor and Oahu North Shore

Pearl Harbor

If all you’ve got to spare is a day and you’d like to make the most of it, this all-inclusive Pearl Harbor and Oahu North Shore trip from Kauai will give you a great bang for your hard-earned buck.

All transportation is included, as are meals, drinks and entry tickets to the Pearl Harbor Arizona Memorial and nearby museum.

Your tickets also include skip-the-line features, so waiting won’t be an issue, thereby enabling you to see many of the sites that usually take more than a day.

You’ll be accompanied on each leg of your journey by a professional guide whose insight will add a lot of value to your tour.

"Chris was our tour guide, get him if you can! We honestly had the best 4 days going from the Na Pali coast, Polihale State Park, Waimea Canyon plus much much more. We didn't need to think at all, everything was organised perfectly from locations to meals to camping gear... You name it they had it covered! My boyfriend and I would HIGHLY recommend booking through these guys. You'll have an unforgettable trip!"

"We set up the private custom tour because we wanted to do two shorter hikes. We are not in the best of shape but we wanted to see a part of Kauai that was different than the mainstream. Jeremiah did not disappoint. He was fabulous. He knew a lot about the plant life, some of the myths and he helped us sight animal life. We spent the day hiking in two ecosystems, coastal and jungle, both were interesting and had great views. Jeremiah also accommodated us to do some geocaching along the way."

"My family did a demanding yet amazing hike with Patrick above the Na Pali coast. I think it was supposed to take 3.5 to 4 hours but because of my less toned physique we had to slow the pace way down. Patrick was great. I felt safe and cared for, and incredibly grateful that he brought extra water and banana slices for when I got a leg cramp on the way back. His enthusiasm for island history and the natural environment is infectious. We had a wonderful experience, and I could not be more pleased."

"We took a five-hour tour of the Waimea Canyon, waterfalls, and NaPali cliffs with Megan and it was perfect. Meghan asked us what we wanted to see at the outset, we told her about our walking limitations, and she designed the perfect tour for us. Along the way we saw exactly what we wanted, learned a lot about the island's history, culture, natural beauty, and language. Highly, highly recommend tours with this company, and we hope next time we're a little more mobile and can have some more adventures."

"What a fantastic hike with Patrick. He was incredibly knowledgeable and very personable. We hiked the back side of the Sleeping Giant and it was absolutely perfect. He made the hike exactly what we wanted it to be and then some. He even took us to some hidden places on the Sleeping Giant that were amazing to see! Mahalo for a fantastic experience! We will be back and will do another hike with you...hopefully sooner rather than later. A hui hou and aloha plenty...Erin and Darron."

"I had an amazing day in Kauai with Jeremiah and the group. I highly recommend his tours! As a solo female traveler, hiking with Jeremiah and the group made the experience stress free and seamless so I could enjoy the experience. Jeremiah took care of the driving, leading off-the-beaten-path hikes, and all the items needed (sticks, snacks, taking pictures). You can tell he loves his job! I will always remember this day in Kauai. Many thanks!"

"My husband and I went to Kauai for our honeymoon and our hike with Jeremiah along a portion of the Napali Coast was hands-down one of the highlights of the trip. Not only did he know everything about Hawaii and the wildlife/plants of the particular region, he was extremely knowledgeable about the people who lived and inhabited those regions. There wasn’t a question he couldn’t answer. He was extremely prepared with snacks and a first aid kit, as well as additional hiking poles that we used that were very helpful. This excursion was 100% worth it and I highly recommend booking a hike with Jeremiah! You won’t regret it!"

"We booked a custom tour and the person on the phone asked plenty of questions regarding what we were looking for. We are an active family and wanted something unique and educational (being teachers). We got Jeremiah who besides being the owner and building his company from the ground up, was just the guide we needed. We ran into some unexpected weather and when talking about hobbies, we learned about his ability to instruct on primitive skills, and that was right up our alley! He whipped out his primitive survival skills which we all loved and we took home a new skill as well! Jeremiah is professional, very smart, level-headed, and in very genuine. He earned our respect and we wish him and this guiding service the best for the future! Thanks, Jeremiah! We will never forget this awesome tour!"

"If you are on the fence about whether to hire a guide to take you on the hike of a lifetime, go for it!! We had the best day hiking with Meghan. She was a wealth of knowledge, kind, and listened to us and our needs. She helped us decide where to hike based on our athletic capability, feeling about heights, and the current weather. Meghan drove us there and back and brought waters and snacks so it was a very easy kind of day! And we learned so much about the actual hike and about Hawaiian mythology and culture. We both were overwhelmed at how happy we were with our decision to hire Kauai Hiking Tours. Even if you are athletic and capable (like we are!) hire this guide to take you places you wouldn’t have gone on your own. We knew we were in good hands the whole time!"

"Words cannot adequately describe the hike we experienced on the Na Pali Coast with Jenny. However, we sent pictures to friends and family who couldn't believe the perfect weather we experienced and incredible views - most people told us they experienced clouds and fog during their hikes. If we return for another hike, we will ask for Jenny as our tour guide. I usually have a fear of heights and am hesitant to embark on such hikes. Jenny coached me during the entire hike and gave me confidence. Additionally, in all our years of hiking, we never met a guide who demonstrated the level of knowledge and experience as Jenny relative to Hawaiian culture and history, terrain, wildlife, what to do in case of injury and ability to inspire confidence in her followers. Thank you, Jenny, for creating such a memorable experience."

"I and my mom did two hikes with KHT while visiting Kaua’i this June and had a great time. Our guide was Jeremiah. As we had no car, I was looking for a private guide to take us to Waimea Canyon and other places. After researching Tripadvisor and contacting another guide based on guidebook recommendation ( who was unresponsive and overpriced), I found someone’s trip report describing their great experience with KHT. I contacted the reviewer who provided further advice and recommended KHT to me. I contacted KHT and received immediate responses with answers to my initial inquiries. After exchanging several emails I spoke to Andrew and Jeremiah and was able to set up two private hikes with them with pick ups from hotel and geared to our interests and abilities. For our first hike, Jeremiah picked us up from Grand Hyatt and took us to Waimea Canyon, stopping at various overlooks, including some hidden ones, where we were able to enjoy the wondrous beauty of Waimea Canyon in private."

To say this was a highlight of our trip is an understatement. Our guide, Jenny, was amazing. Born and raised on Kauai, she loves this land and knows it inside and out. Her insight into the area and culture was an invaluable part of the tour and she was just downright fun! The 6 hours together flew by - the kids loved the experience - hiking in the Canyon, swimming in a water hole, getting muddy and loving it!!! Thank you Jenny for an incredible day and experience.

16 Best Things to Do in Kauai

16 Best Things to Do in Kauai

Before visiting Kauai the only thing I knew about it was that it’s known as Jurassic Park Island . While many scenes from Jurassic Park and Jurassic World were filmed at Kualoa Ranch in Oahu , the original Jurassic Park was filmed mostly in Kauai, Hawaii.

Remember the stunning coastal views when Hammond brings Alan and Ellie to Isla Nublar by helicopter and then they land at a waterfall? That’s Na Pali Coast in Kauai.

The first dinosaur, Brachiosaurus (yes, the one that was left behind in Fallen Kingdom), was walking around Jurassic Ranch in eastern Kauai!

That being said, there are so many exciting things to do in Kauai so let’s get into the list.

day tours kauai

1. Taste Koloa Rum

Kauai is more than the mystic land of dinosaurs. Koloa Rum, a company producing Hawaiian Rum, is also Kauaian and their rum has been produced in vintage copper-pot stills since 2009.

We had a chance to visit their tasting room and try all the different kinds of rum they produce. If you’re ever in Lihue, stop by and try some – warning: you might want to buy a bottle of rum after you try it. My favorite ones were coffee and coconut-flavored rum.

If you’re there, stop by Gaylord’s Restaurant for lunch. They’re a 67-acre sustainable farm that uses their own produce in dishes and cocktails. I had a great rib and fresh fish there

2. Take a Movie Location Tour

As I have already mentioned, this iconic island has graced the screen in many blockbusters such as “Jurassic Park” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

If you are a movie buff, you simply have to take a movie location tour where you can walk in the footsteps of your favorite actors and relive iconic scenes in real life.

These tours do more than just showcase Kauai’s natural beauty , they reveal the mysteries and myths behind the films. Plus, it’s a unique way to explore the island’s diverse landscapes!

3. Visit Waimea Canyon State Park

Known as the “ Grand Canyon of the Pacific ,” Waimea Canyon State Park stands as a true natural wonder with its majestic, colorful hills and breathtaking landscapes.

The park has several viewing areas , each offering a different view of the canyon and there is a scenic drive that passes through offering great opportunities for easy sightseeing.

If you’re up for a hike, make sure to pack your hiking boots as there are many trails that allow you to explore this amazing land in depth.

4. Enjoy a Helicopter Tour

If you really want to appreciate the absolute beauty of Kauai, why not get the ultimate view from a helicopter tour?

You’ll get unbeatable panoramas as you fly over rainforests, waterfalls, jagged cliffs, and hidden beaches .

Guided by a knowledgeable pilot, you will explore the island’s history, geography, and hidden gems in a truly unforgettable way. Plus, you’ll get to see inaccessible landscapes such as the famous Manawaiopuna Falls that was featured in Jurassic Park.

5. Swim in the Queen’s Bath

Tucked away in a rocky alcove, Queen’s Bath is a beautiful natural tidal pool that is carved into the lava rock near Princeville. The rockpool provides a unique place to swim or simply a great spot to take some epic pictures.

To reach this hidden gem, you’ll need to do a short hike but once there you’ll be surrounded by incredible rugged lava rock formations and a beautiful natural pool that’s filled with crystal-clear seawater.

Make sure you check the tides and local conditions before going as sometimes unpredictable waves can make the pools quite dangerous

6. Hike the Kalalau Trail

If you love the outdoors, the Kalalau Trail is an absolute dream. This incredible traverses from Keʻe Beach to Kalalau Beach , offering some of the most awe-inspiring views of the Nāpali Coast which is inaccessible any other way.

Steep cliffs, huge valleys, and the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean are your constant companions. However, be prepared for a tough hike that is definitely not for the faint of heart .

The hike is 11 miles each way and requires quite a bit of planning so make sure to check out the Kalalau Trail website before setting off.

7. Explore a Botanical Garden (or two)

When it comes to botanical gardens, Kauai boasts c ountless options for you to enjoy manicured gardens and picturesque picnic settings.

The best botanical gardens in Kauai are The Na ‘Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Garden , the National Tropical Botanical Garden , and the Allerton-McBryde Botanical Garden , each offering something a little different to explore.

Be prepared to be completely enchanted as these botanical sanctuaries provide an immersive experience with an array of native and exotic plants plus some beautiful sculptures perfectly harmonizing with nature.

Recommended Tours: Allerton Garden Guided Group Walking Tour Allerton Garden and Estate Tour with Sunset Dinner

8. See Wailua Falls

With its twin cascades that stand at a whopping 173 ft high , the Wailua Falls stands as a symbol of Kauai’s natural beauty and is absolutely a must-visit when exploring the island. You might even recognize them from the opening of the “Fantasy Island” TV show.

The falls are easily accessible as you can drive all the way to the first viewpoint , making them a must-visit for all travelers. For the adventurous souls, a short hike leads to alternative viewpoints offering breathtaking views of the cascades or even to the base where you can take a dip in the cool waters .

9. Try Surfing

When most people think of Hawaii, surfing often comes to mind and Kauai is no exception. Whether you’re an experienced surfer or a complete beginner, there are plenty of opportunities to try surfing.

If you’ve never tried before, it’s always best to take a lesson, so make sure to book a spot with one of the surf schools that line the coastline. They welcome enthusiasts of all skill levels!

From the gentle swells of Hanalei Bay to the more challenging breaks along the south shore, Kauai’s diverse surf spots cater to surfers of every persuasion. So, don your swimsuit, wax up your board, and let the Pacific Ocean become your playground.

10. Go Kayaking

Visiting Kauai is all about getting out in nature to enjoy its spectacular beauty in as many ways as possible. Another great way to do that is to go kayaking and explore hidden coves, tranquil rivers, or dramatic coastlines.

The Garden Island offers an array of kayaking experiences, each more enchanting than the last. Paddle along the Wailua River , where you’ll be serenaded by the sounds of nature as you venture toward the secret Fern Grotto.

Alternatively, embark on a sea kayaking journey along the Na Pali Coast , where colossal sea cliffs meet the endless expanse of the ocean.

Secret Falls and Hanalei Bay are two more popular spots to check out by kayak and if you aren’t confident in going alone, you can easily join a tour where you’ll be guided through the whole experience.

11. Get Your Heart Pumping on a Zipline

If you’re seeking an adrenaline rush amidst Kauai’s verdant landscapes, look no further than this Zipline adventure . Suspended in harnesses, you’ll soar through the canopy of lush forests across 3 beautiful valleys.

Depending on your thirst for adventure, you can choose between a 5 or 8-zipline packag e which includes Hawaii’s only plank-launch zipline.

Note that children must be at least 10 years old to participate and will need to have a waiver signed by their parents.

12. Join a Boat Tour

The island’s coastline is adorned with sea caves, hidden beaches, and dramatic cliffs that can only be accessed by water so taking a boat tour should absolutely be a high priority for you in Kauai.

While you’re gliding through crystal-clear waters with the most dramatic background of your life, you may even be accompanied by curious dolphins and, if you’re lucky, majestic humpback whales during the winter months .

Whether you choose a catamaran cruise or a traditional Hawaiian outrigger, these boat tours offer an incredible experience not to be missed.

Recommended Tours: Niihau and Na Pali Coast Full-Day Boat Tour Napali Coast Sunset Sail with Dinner

13. Relax at a Beach

What’s an island getaway without some beach time? Unsurprisingly, the beaches of Kauai are simply perfect, and two of the best for visitors to experience are Poipu Beach Park and Tunnels Beach.

Poipu Beach Park has pristine golden sands and gentle waves making it a prime spot for sunbathing and swimming. But what sets it apart is the resident Hawaiian monk seals that are often seen basking in the sun.

Tunnels Beach, on the other hand, is a snorkeler’s paradise . The underwater wonderland is teeming with marine life, vibrant corals, and underwater caves.

14. Take a Picture of the Spouting Horn Blowhole

Located on Kauai’s south shore, this natural wonder showcases the ocean’s raw power. As the waves crash into an underwater lava tube, a huge plume of water and mist erupts that looks just like a whale’s blowhole.

The Spouting Horn is a mesmerizing sight and a photographer’s dream, especially at sunset!

Make sure to listen out to the hissing sound that accompanies the blowhole as this is what inspired the Hawaiian legend of the giant lizard that once guarded this coastline .

15. See the Fern Grotto

Nestled along the Wailua River, the Fern Grotto is a natural lava rock amphitheater filled with beautiful lush ferns and tropical flora accessible only by water.

Many boat tours make a stop here and the journey up the river to reach this incredible spot is simply enchanting. The combination of the lush grotto and the picturesque river journey makes it a must-see attraction for anyone seeking a serene escape in Kauai.

16. Experience the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail

Traversing rugged terrain and pristine beaches as you hike along windswept cliffs with panoramic ocean views, the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail is a beautiful journey through Kauai’s history and raw beauty.

At just 2 miles long (each way), this coastal trail is easy to walk with unbeatable views and periodic signs with photos and descriptions along the way, giving you a lot of value without too much effort.

The trail starts at Shipwreck Beach and ends on Punahoa Point , generally taking around 2 hours to complete. But there are plenty of stops you can make along the way if you want to add in a beach trip or quick drink at the Grand Hyatt.

Where to Stay in Kauai

Grand hyatt kauai resort and spa.

During our stay in Kauai, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa. The staff made us feel special from the moment we arrived , greeting us with giant drinks served in real pineapples.

The lazy river and their pool complex are open 24 hours , and on top of that, I could rent a floatie so of course I opted for an inflatable whale!

We had a chance to eat at their Tidewaters restaurant and the food was exceptional. Remember to order a Lava Flow cocktail.

Can’t Miss Kauai Shore Excursions

Want to make the most out of your time on Kauai? Here are our short list of can’t miss Kauai shore excursions to add to your bucket list. If you are on Norwegian’s Pride of America then you will be able to stay late on the first day. Perfect for a luau or a sunset sail on the Napali Coast.

  • Napali Coast Tour: Explore one of the island’s most remote and most beautiful landscapes! Our favorite is the snorkel and sail tour , but you can also book a helicopter , airplane , or hiking tour.

Kauai Shore Excursion Tips

If you’re arriving in Kauai on the Norwegian’s Pride of America, you’ll have practically two full days to explore this beautiful island. This gives you plenty of time to take part in multiple excursions and do a late-night excursion like a luau or sunset sail.

Thankfully, ships dock at Nawiliwili Harbor, which is centrally located next to many of Kauai’s top attractions. Click here for directions to Nawiliwili Harbor .

Because you have extra time, Kauai is a great place to do things you can’t do at other ports of call. For example, you can take a full-day tour, stay on land to watch the sunset, or go on a long hiking adventure. You can also go to a luau (the three we recommend are a 10 to 30-minute drive), as they tend to be more traditional and intimate compared to the other islands.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Hawaii cruise ports so you know what to expect at each stop. Some ports are central to a downtown area where you could spend all day ( Kailua Pier ) and others are far from anything you’ll want to do ( Kahului Harbor ).

Kauai shore excursions luau

For travelers who’d rather see the island on their own, we highly recommend booking a rental car for your stay. This will be much cheaper than relying on taxis or Ubers to take you to the different sights. We have a few recommendations for discount rental car companies if you choose to go down this route.

Having a rental car gives you a lot of flexibility – which can be a blessing or a curse! If you need help narrowing down your options of what to do, then check out our Cruising Hawaii Guide for a detailed self-guided itinerary.

There’s a lot to see on the island, but these are a few spots that you won’t want to miss. Click the location name for Google Map directions.

  • Lihue : 5 minutes from the harbor
  • Waimea Canyon : 1 hour from the harbor
  • Poipu on Kauai’s South Shore: 20 minutes from the harbor
  • Hanalei on Kauai’s North Shore: 50 minutes from the harbor

Cruising Hawaii Guide

Booking a cruise to Hawaii is the easy part (in our opinion). The hard part is finding the best shore excursions, planning self-guided itinerary days, and how to get around the island.

Where to Book Kauai Shore Excursions

Booking kauai shore excursions with the ship.

If you decide to book an excursion, then you have the possibility to do so with the cruise ship. Here are a few benefits of booking a tour with the cruise line:

  • Guaranteed Return: Tours organized by the ship are scheduled to bring you back before departure. While this isn’t a big deal on the first day, it is a nice guarantee if you’re planning to explore the second day.
  • Transportation: These excursions usually include transportation to and from the dock, so there’s no need to worry about arranging your own taxi or ride share.
  • Cost: Kauai excursions aren’t cheap, especially if you book through the cruise line. But since they include transportation and a guaranteed return, we think this extra cost is justifiable!
  • Refunds: The weather and ocean conditions around Kauai can change in an instant. If the ship is not allowed to dock, then they’ll refund the cost of the excursion.
  • Booking Flexibility: Not sure if you want to do an organized tour? Don’t worry! You can book this online before the ship sets sail or once you’re aboard. Just know they can fill up fast through the ship.

Kauai shore excursions lush jungle waterfalls

Booking Kauai Shore Excursions with the Tour Operator

There are some huge benefits to booking your tour directly with the local tour operator on Kauai. However, one of the biggest disadvantages is not having a guaranteed return back to the ship. If you are running late, it is crucial to call the cruise to let them know you’re on your way!

But don’t let the fear of missing the ship deter you! Here are some reasons why we recommend booking with the tour operator:

  • Supporting Local Businesses: Unlike booking a tour with the ship (where the cruise line takes a commission), arranging a tour on land means the company keeps all the profits. This is great for supporting the local community in Kauai!
  • Cost Savings: Tours are generally more affordable when not booked through the middleman. If you are on a budget, then booking with the tour operator is going to be the more affordable option.
  • Availability: Cruise ship tours are limited and can sell out. If your favorite excursion is booked, you can find more tour options on land.
  • Small Groups: These tours usually have much smaller groups than the ones organized by the tour. In our experience, there are usually no more than 12 people on the excursion.
  • Cancellation Policy: One thing to keep in mind is the company’s cancellation policy. Depending on the operator, most tours will allow you to cancel anywhere from 72 to 24 hours in advance.

If you’re traveling with mobility or accessibility needs, rest easy knowing Hawaii has you in mind. We have a complete guide to Hawaii Handicap Accessible Trip Planning so you know what to expect (a whole lot of aloha).

The Best Kauai Shore Excursions

When it comes to the different types of Kauai shore excursions, the options are seemingly endless. To help point you in the right direction, we will be sharing trusted and reputable tour operators, most of whom we’ve been out with ourselves.

Remember, if you’re on Norwegian’s Pride of America, you’ll have two days on Kauai. That means you can take advantage of sunset or late tours on your first day and early morning or all-day tours on your second day.

Click the links below to learn more about the tour and to book directly with the local, Kauai tour operator.

Napali + Ni’ihau Snorkel Tour

Explore two of Kauai’s most sought-after destinations in one day! Your tour starts with a cruise up the striking Napali Coast before making your way to Ni’ihau, the Forbidden Island, a private invite-only island where you’ll stop to go snorkeling just offshore Ni’ihau at a volcanic crater.

You won’t be allowed on the island, but it’s a really cool experience to get close to a place that hasn’t been touched by modern conveniences like power, plumbing, phones, or paved roads.

This tour can only be done if you’re docked on Kauai overnight, as it starts bright and early at 6:00 am. Unfortunately, no transportation is included, so you’ll need to make sure you give yourself at least 30 minutes to make your way there.

Napali Coast Sunset and Dinner Cruise

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion (or just celebrating the fact that you’re in Hawaii!), this Napalia Coast sunset cruise is guaranteed to be a memorable experience. On this 3.5-hour journey, you’ll get to soak in the spectacular views while enjoying appetizers, dinner, and drinks.

The boat leaves from Port Allen (30 minutes from the cruise terminal) at 2:30pm, and you’ll be required to arrange your own transportation.

Helicopter Tour of the Napali Coast

Roughly 80% of Kauai is inaccessible by foot or car, leaving stretches of wilderness completely untouched by tourism. You’ll be able to see parts of the island that few tourists ever do on this 1-hour helicopter ride of the Napali Coast !

When you book this private helicopter tour, you can choose whether you want to have the doors on or off (if you’re feeling extra adventurous)! All flights leave from the Lihue Airport, which is just a short 5-minute drive away from the cruise ship harbor.

Flight over Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon

Another option to see the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon from the air is by plane. This scenic flight lasts 1-hour and takes you over the iconic cliffs, beaches, and jungles that Kauai is famous for. It’s also more affordable compared to the helicopter tour, as it’s a group flight with up to 6 passengers.

There are multiple tour times to choose from, and all of them leave from the nearby Lihue Airport.

Napali Coast Snorkel and Sail

For a fun family day out, the Napali Coast Snorkel and Sail tour is an awesome way to spend your day on Kauai. Departing from Port Allen, your catamaran will travel up to the Napali Coast where you’ll get to snorkel in the ocean for 50 minutes. After lunch and drinks (which are included), you’ll continue your sailing journey until the early afternoon.

Transportation is not included with this tour so make sure to arrange for a ride ahead of time. Because of the 7:30 am start time, this trip can only be done on the second day if your cruise is docked overnight.

We share the 5 Best Napali Coast boat tours here .

Perhaps the main item on your Kauai shore excursion’s list is surf lessons. Kauai is a great place to learn how to surf, and we know the best instructors to help you!

Ideal for beginner or intermediate surfers, Kauai Surf School offers private or group lessons. All lessons are 1.5 hours long, which gives you lots of time to hit the waves of Poipu Beach (30 minutes away by car)!

FAQ on Kauai Shore Excursions

Where do cruise ships dock for kauai shore excursions.

Cruise ships arrive at Kauai’s Nawiliwili Harbor, located in the town of Lihue (southeastern coast near the airport).

kauai shore excursions nawiliwili harbor cruise dock

Can I get picked up by taxi, Uber, or Lyft from the dock for my Kauai shore excursions?

Since most of these tours do not include transportation, you will need to take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to the excursion meeting point. You also have the option to rent a car from the Lihue Airport or from a rental car satellite office near the harbor.

We have more detailed information about rental car companies and other transportation options in our Cruising Hawaii Guide .

Do tour operators offer pickup at the dock?

Depending on your excursion, pick up and drop off at the cruise terminal may or may not be offered. If you don’t see this option listed on the website, you can always call the company to confirm.

What should I know about booking tours in Hawaii?

Before you book your excursion on Kauai (or anywhere else in Hawaii, for that matter), keep these tips in mind:

  • It’s customary to tip your tour guides anywhere from $10 to $20 per person. However, this can be more or less depending on the level of service you received.
  • Kauai is the rainiest island in Hawaii, and it’s possible that tours may be canceled due to bad or dangerous weather. Since variable weather is the norm on Kauai, many tours run rain or shine as long as it’s safe. Feel free to call the company or check with your cruise line to confirm if you’re worried about the weather.
  • If you’re prone to seasickness, make sure to stock up on anti-nausea medication. This can be helpful on the cruise and on the smaller tour boats if you’re going out on the water!
  • Many tours have age restrictions (usually guests need to be over 5 years old). Double-check this before booking your Kauai shore excursion if you have little ones with you.
