Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

You need to give your biometrics.

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

Find out who needs to give biometrics and how the new application process works.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and  where to give your biometrics .

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

Some biometrics collection sites are closed. If the site closest to you is closed, we’ll extend your deadline to give your biometrics. Find out how COVID-19 is affecting biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Find out more about inadmissibility .

Permanent residents of Canada

We do not issue temporary resident visas (TRV) to permanent residents (PR). If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you must apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) instead. If you meet the requirements for a PRTD, you can return to Canada as a PR.

If you no longer want to be a PR, or if you know you do not meet the requirements to keep your PR status, you can voluntarily give up (renounce) your PR status to apply for a TRV.

What visas you need to come to Canada for conferences and conventions

canada visit visa nairaland 2022

Event organizers are already planning to hold conferences and conventions in-person in 2022, pending the ongoing pandemic. Some have already gone back to in-person programming for the fall.

It is already possible to come to Canada as a tourist for U.S. citizens and permanent residents . By September 7, the border is expected to open to fully vaccinated tourists from the rest of the world. It will likely be closed to unvaccinated non-essential travellers for a long time, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested.

Public health measures on international travellers are determined by the federal government, and are applied nationwide. However, the provinces set their own public health measures depending on the COVID-19 situation in their region. Before coming to Canada at any time during the pandemic, you will want to check the current measures. Federal policies are available at this government webpage , and provincial restrictions are available here .

Also, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) website offers a checklist for the documents and other considerations you will need to take when crossing the border. As for visitor visas , work permits , and overcoming criminal inadmissibility , here is what you need to know:

Click here to get a free consultation with the Law Firm of Campbell Cohen

Attendees and presenters require different documents

A person who is coming to Canada to attend a conference needs authorization to come to Canada, such as an eTA or visitor’s visa . No work permit is required. U.S. citizens coming from the U.S. can get authorization at the border. Everyone else will need either an eTA or visitor's visa.

eTA : This stands for electronic travel authorization. To get one, you can fill out a form online . It only takes a few minutes to complete. The cost is $7 CAD. Most eTAs are granted within minutes of applying. But, some may take days to process. The eTA lasts for up to five years. It allows multiple entries to Canada, for individual stays of up to six months. Only a U.S. permanent resident or a citizen of a listed country can apply for an eTA. Currently, there are about sixty eligible countries . This group includes the U.K., France, and Australia.

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV): In all other cases, a person has to apply for a visitor visa. This is also sometimes known as a temporary resident visa. Most visitor’s visas last for six months, but their validity can be adjusted. Like the eTA, you can also apply for a visitor visa online .

A person who is coming to Canada to present at a work conference that lasts for five days or less also needs authorization to come to Canada. They do not need a work permit, but will be considered a business visitor . They will still need a visitor visa or eTA, depending on which country they are coming from.

A person who is coming to Canada to present at a work conference that lasts for more than five days needs authorization to enter Canada, and a work permit .

Crossing the border with a criminal record

Having a criminal past will affect your ability to travel to Canada. Each person’s situation will differ. Whether a person is criminally inadmissible to Canada or not will depend on several factors, such as:

  • the type and number of crimes;
  • jail sentence length, if any; and
  • how long it has been since completion of sentence (jail, probation, fine, etc.)

There are three potential solutions to overcome inadmissibility .

Temporary Resident Permit (TRP): If a person is inadmissible due to serious criminality, and less than five years has passed since sentence completion, this will be the only option. A TRP may last for a day, or up to three years. It may be single-use, or allow multiple entries. The applicant will have to show a compelling reason to come to Canada. They should also demonstrate that the benefits of their visit outweigh any risks.

Criminal rehabilitation : This is a process by which a person who was inadmissible becomes admissible again. Unlike a TRP, it is permanent. This means that a person does not have to re-apply for rehabilitation each time they want to visit Canada. In some cases, a person will apply for what is known as individual rehabilitation . This option is available to some people who completed their sentence at least five years prior. There is also deemed rehabilitation . The latter form occurs automatically. It only applies, however, to people who committed less serious crimes and who completed their sentence at least ten years prior.

Legal opinion letter : This is a document a lawyer draws up. It explains the client’s criminal record and its impact. A legal opinion letter can argue why a client is not inadmissible, or why the client deserves a TRP or rehabilitation. The letter can also be helpful to people who have been charged with a crime but not yet convicted. It can explain to officers the client’s situation.

Student Visa Delay

  • Thread starter Nandy6

Hi, I applied for my Student Visa online under SDS on 22nd July 2019. This was my second attempt. In my first attempt, I was missing an SOP and hence, got rejected. Today is 22nd of August, a full month to the date I applied. My biometrics were already submitted from day one since I was applying the second time. The only update I received was on August 1 that I had passed my medical test. After that, there has been no update. My course starts on the 3rd of Sept 2019 (less than two weeks now) and I still haven't even received a passport request. Can anyone help me with the same? Thanks!

Canada opens new visa application centre in Portugal

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Immigration is critical to Canada’s long-term success. Newcomers and visitors fuel our economy and add vibrancy to our communities. As we continue to receive high volumes of visa applications from around the world, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is committed to improving processing efficiency and client service. This includes expanding our international presence when needed.

February 19, 2024 — Ottawa— Immigration is critical to Canada’s long-term success.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today the opening of a new Canada visa application centre (VAC) in Lisbon, Portugal, on February 26, 2024. With this new centre, IRCC’s VAC network will consist of 163 locations in 110 countries around the world.

VACs are managed by private companies that have contracts with the Government of Canada. Their primary role is to accept documents required in the visa application process, securely transmit them to IRCC offices and provide biometric collection services. VAC service agents are available by phone, email or in person to answer questions in local languages and to help make sure that applications are complete.

The people-to-people ties between Canada and Portugal have grown stronger over time and, today these ties are underpinned by a vibrant Canadian community of Portuguese origin. That is why IRCC remains committed to making it easier than ever for Portuguese citizens to travel to Canada. The opening of a new visa application centre in Lisbon will offer them greater flexibility and accessibility to visit, study or work in Canada, and open the door to new opportunities for social, economic and cultural exchange that will benefit both countries.

“The opening of the first-ever Canada visa application centre in Portugal is another example of our commitment to improving visa processing efficiency and client service. Portuguese citizens already enjoy visa-exempt travel to Canada for up to six months, and the new VAC will make it even easier for them to apply to visit longer, study or work in Canada, all while contributing to our economy and deepening the ties between our countries.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

IRCC began opening VACs in the mid 2000s. The first one opened in India, followed by one in China. VACs are not involved in making decisions on files nor are they authorized to provide applicants with advice about their visas or permits.

Portuguese citizens visiting Canada for up to six months typically only need an  electronic travel authorization . Those who plan to visit or study for longer than six months or to work in Canada are required to apply for a visa and a study or work permit.

With the opening of the Lisbon VAC, applicants in Portugal will no longer need to travel outside of the country, which helps reduce costs as well as distance and travel time and improve client service. Non-Portuguese citizens living in Portugal who need a visa to come to Canada can also access services at the Lisbon VAC. Applicants can make an appointment as of February 12, 2024.

Canada and Portugal enjoy strong bilateral relations and celebrated 70 years of formal diplomatic relations in 2022. According to the 2021 Census, roughly 448,000 people of Portuguese origin live in Canada.

Canada and Portugal have a bilateral youth mobility arrangement. Under the arrangement, Portuguese and Canadian youth aged 18 to 35 can work and travel in each other’s country for up to 24 months.
