Trek Domane+ LT 7 review

Plush endurance bike with an e-kick

Russell Burton / Immediate Media

Warren Rossiter

Glorious Domane comfort; unobtrusive assistance; great range potential

High price; doesn’t include the down-tube cover for non-ebike use

Trek’s latest e-road bike is similar to its first Bosch mid-motor-equipped bike based around the Domane. Here, however, it has turned to an alternative German-made motor system. Out goes the heavyweight Bosch system and in comes the lightweight Fazua Evation, making this most modern of e-road bikes drop to just 13.8kg (58cm).

And that’s not the full tale: the Fazua system is removable, so if you shell out for the optional down-tube cover (around £70), you’re left with a ‘standard’ bike just shy of 11kg.

The Trek Domane LT 7 has IsoSpeed technology, which helps dampen vibrations

Trek Domane LT 7 spec

The Domane is the ideal choice for e-assistance because the chassis is highly versatile. Its on-road manners impress, while plush IsoSpeed front and rear design means it can hold its own with the best electric gravel bikes on light gravel. The big-volume tubeless tyres play their part, too.

As a reminder, IsoSpeed is essentially a pivot (or ‘decoupler’, as Trek terms it) that replaces a traditional join between top and seat tubes, and provides a suspension-like softness to the bike’s rear without compromising bottom-bracket stiffness.

Up front, the IsoSpeed takes a different form, where a traditional headset is replaced with a rocker cup. This design locks in the steerer tube laterally, but allows the steerer to flex fore-and-aft as you ride over bumps.

The LT 7 comes with the superb Ultegra Di2, featuring a gear range of 50/34, 11-34 that’ll suit most riders and ease you up any slope, even without the Fazua assistance.

Trek’s component partner, Bontrager, provides every other element of the bike. The Aeolus Pro 3V wheels have great build quality and an excellent modern shape, with a 25.2mm internal rim width that plumps up the tubeless 32c tyres to near 35mm.

trek domane lt 2022

Then there’s the slick cockpit that includes ‘Blendr’ accessories. We’re talking an integrated GPS/light mount with the carbon IsoCore drop bar that was designed for the Domane chassis and offers vibration-killing technology. Finally, there’s the slender but well-padded and comfortable Arvada saddle.

Trek Domane LT 7 geometry

Trek domane lt 7 motor assistance.

Comfort is what the Domane is all about in its ‘standard’ trim and Trek has mirrored it here, even accounting for the extra 2.9kg of motor system.

You enjoy the same smooth ride over rougher surfaces, and same assured and swift cornering. Its rough-crushing abilities did result in me taking it beyond its edge, however; a 30 mph gravelly descent ended in a torn sidewall. So beware: if you take it way off the beaten track, you may want to beef up its boots.

trek domane lt 2022

As for assistance, the Evation system delivers a maximum of 250W (unboosted). You access this power via a neat control unit that’s flush-mounted into the top tube. It has an on/off switch, /- switches and five LED coloured lights to notify you of charge level.

With the Fazua software and app, you can switch modes between Eco, Moderate and Performance. In Moderate mode, the settings are green for low power (providing 100W and called ‘Breeze’ mode), blue puts in 210W (‘River’), and red 250W is ‘Rocket’. The Eco mode drops the power to extend the range, while Performance mode reaches a peak of 300W (Rocket/red).

The Fazua is a clever system, closely matching your pedalling input so that power delivery is a gently rising, unobtrusive assist rather than a big dump of torque-fuelled e-power.

It feels almost natural. Fazua claims a class-leading 60Nm of torque from the motor. I'm sceptical about that because it doesn’t feel as powerful as a system like the Bosch Active Line Plus, which I tested recently. Then again, maybe it’s because it’s so subtly delivered.

The Fazua Evation 1.0 motor system on the Trek Domane LT 7 is situated in the down tube

Trek Domane LT 7 ride impressions

I'm impressed with this system’s best range of 109.43km and 2,205m climbing. It compares well with the range-extending battery equipped to the S-Works Turbo Creo SL ’s figures of 172.168km and 1,324m of ascent, and Cannondale’s SuperSix EVO Neo at 122km and 1,124m.

Obviously, your riding style and speed, weight, weather conditions, topography and how you use the system all have an impact. With the Fazua, I tended to use the system almost like gears.

trek domane lt 2022

On the flat, I had the system off (it stops assisting above 15.7mph); on climbs, I used it to get up to speed before stepping down to the most economic setting to extract the max out of the range.

This Domane LT 7 is another brilliant e-road bike that’s up there with the Scott Addict eRIDE , Cannondale’s SuperSix EVO Neo and the Specialized S-Works Creo SL.

trek domane lt 2022

It combines the smooth ride quality of the standard Domane with handling that’s the epitome of endurance stability and big-volume tyres that open up more than the road.

This latest, updated Fazua system works well and it’s simply an impressive bike. The downside is the price. If, like most of us, it’s prohibitive, I’d suggest you take a serious look at the lower models from Trek, such as the carbon Domane LT+ at £6,000 or the aluminium Domane+ ALR at £3,750 / $4,600 (prices correct at time of test).

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 in review

trek domane lt 2022

For our group test, Trek put stock in an ebike with a mid-motor drive and trust that the Domane+ LT 9 will be the best road bike of the 2021 season. With the additional power of the FAZUA Ride 50 Evation system, how does it compare to 14 of the most exciting bikes of the 2021 season? Find out here.

For an overview of the test fleet head to the group test: The best road bike of 2021 – 15 models in review

trek domane lt 2022

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 draws looks inexorably. To begin with, that’s because of the Gloss Purple Flip finish #colorporn! Once you’re done ogling the paint job, you’ll notice the hefty appearance and it becomes clear that this is an ebike. Trek rely on FAZUA’s Ride 50 Evation system consisting of a gearbox fixed in the bottom bracket and Drivepack. The gearbox incorporates a torque sensor and cadence measurement, letting the system know how much power the rider is producing so that it can deliver appropriate motor support depending on the assistance mode. The Drivepack unit is partly integrated into the down tube, can be completely removed and contains a 250 W, 55 Nm motor together with a 252 Wh battery that can be swapped out. You can switch the system on and select between the three assistance modes, Breeze, River and Rocket via the Bluetooth remote on the top tube. While Breeze will support you with a constant 100 W regardless of your own input, the progressive River mode modulates its output in sync with your power up to a maximum support of 210 W. Rocket then, once again, supports you independently of your input, this time with 250 W. Different modes for different uses. Do you have heavy legs and need a little support? Choose Breeze. Do you want to work hard but be quicker than usual? River is your thing! Shuttle service needed? It’s Rocket time! All this applies to the factory settings but the modes can also be adjusted individually, for example with Rocket providing short-duration peaks of 400 W support. A Shimano DURA-ACE Di2 groupset with 50/34 t chainrings and 11–30 t cassette eschews the standard cranks in favour of the FSA SL-K Light cranks that were developed especially for the FAZUA unit.

The gear range is sufficient for flat sections and hilly tours, but on longer hills without or with limited motor assistance, a 34 t cog at the back wouldn’t hurt. Instead of DURA-ACE rotors, the Domane+ LT 9 comes with 160 mm XTR mountain bike rotors. The cockpit consists of the 100 mm long Bontrager XXX Blendr carbon stem and the 420 mm wide Bontrager Pro IsoCore VR-CF bars. The latter damp vibrations and small bumps effectively thanks to a special carbon layup and, thankfully, let you forget the lack of IsoSpeed system at the front of this Trek. The bike rolls on 700 x 32C Bontrager R3 tires, mounted tubeless on the Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3V TLR wheels, which balloon to 34 mm wide thanks to the impressive 25 mm inner width of the rim – a very well matched wheel and tire combination for this group test and bike concept! The Trek Domane+ LT 9 frame is furnished with mounting points for mudguards and is ready to be fitted with an integrated light system. The Trek Domane+ LT 9 costs € 10,999.

trek domane lt 2022

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 weighs 13.42 kg in size 56 making it the heaviest bike in the test and significantly heavier than the two other E-road bikes. It can’t hide that fact when it comes to the handling, making it the bike that requires the most significant steering input to change direction. As a result of its more imprecise and not particularly direct steering, it feels sluggish and falls behind the SCOTT and Orbea ebikes.

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 might be the heaviest ebike in the test but also offers the widest range of application amongst the E-road bikes. Charge the battery, attach lights and mudguards, and you have an all-round carefree package!

trek domane lt 2022

Nonetheless, it always remains good-natured. That character also fits the moderately stretched position which is well-suited to long distances and offers the best comfort of the three ebikes in the test. The adjustable IsoSpeed system on the seat tube, the wide Bontrager tires and the IsoCore bars do a whole lot of work. The IsoSpeed system decouples the seat mast from the main frame generating lots of comfort. However, the bike loses marks for the seat mast cap, which is very short due to the IsoSpeed system, limiting the range of adjustment. Riders with comparatively long legs won’t be happy here. In addition, you should also be aware that the Trek has a wider Q-factor than traditional bikes as a result of the FAZUA gearbox in the bottom bracket. The stiff frame means the bike responds directly, even above the assistance limit of the motor, though it does miss some sprightliness due to its high overall weight. As such, the Domane+ LT 9 can’t match the SCOTT Addict eRIDE Premium. By contrast, acceleration with motor support is very powerful. The FAZUA motor delivers noticeably more torque than the MAHLE Ebikemotion system, while the throttling of the motor at the 25 km/h assistance limit feels very natural. Having gotten used to the comparatively high inertia of the bike, there’s nothing to complain about regarding ride security. Even on rough ground its sits planted and with its good stability conveys the highest sense of trust of all the ebikes in the test. And this trust is maintained while braking too – there’s plenty of power on tap!

Indended Use

The Trek Domane+ LT 9 expands the definition of road bike very much in the direction of E-SUVs with drop bars but convinces with the best everyday practicality of all the E-road bikes in the test. The mudguard mounts and ready-to-use light mounts make it the ideal bike for all those looking for a powerful cruiser for paths away from asphalt but who also like to push hard on the pedals themselves now and then. What you won’t find is a low weight or a cornering demon.

trek domane lt 2022

No, it’s not about perfect race tracks, it’s about efficiency. Fast, fleet-footed and efficient – those who want to speed along high-speed passages need a defined and spritely bike that accelerates with ease and efficiency. Nevertheless, reliable components are important too. We interpret “Smooth tarmac” bikes as follows: Hard efforts at high speeds with a maximum efficient bike on a consistently well-paved road. Effort-joy ratio: 80:30 (not everything has to be 100%!) ↩

… also known as bike riding. Broken-up roads in the hinterland, deadlocked gravel roads, loose surfaces – sometimes muddy, sometimes bone-dry. For this, it takes bikes with super all-round, handling and wearing qualities uphill and downhill. Effort-joy ratio: 50:50 ↩

If you want to use your bike almost every day, you usually do not need an extremely tuned racing machine. Solid components, which are able to cope with the rigours of continuous usage in any kind of weather, are part of the basic equipment. At the same time, the bike should have practicable details: integrated fenders/assembly options, luggage racks/attachment points and a light system or at least the option of installing bike lights. The position on the bike should be rather relaxed, the overall comfort high, so that the Afterwork Ride becomes a cure and not a curse. Effort-joy ratio: 30:70 ↩

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

trek domane lt 2022

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. This particular build uses top of the line SRAM components with a 1x12 drivetrain, flared drop bar, and 40c wide gravel tires. Alternative builds offer narrower road tires and a 2x12 Shimano drivetrain. SRAM Red electronic shifting and 160mm hydraulic disc brakes.

Hidden fender mounts add utility, integrated top top tube display panel works well and is easy to read, optional smartphone app provides motor tuning settings, optional range extending 160wh bottle shaped battery pack provides 40% more range and off-bike charging.

Excellent control pad button placement on left and right hood. Includes 4 amp fast charger despite having a lower capacity 360wh battery. Main battery not removable for charging and storage. Seat post is a proprietary shape so upgrade options are limited.

"Domane is: Special. A great bike made better. A bike for the modern road rider: Freaking fast, wonderfully comfortable, and oh so practical.” - Bicycling

“The ride is simply sublime. Its balance between smooth, vibration-eliminating comfort, sharp handling, and out-and-out speed combines with an ability to get off the beaten track." - BikeRadar

"It absorbs all road vibrations, operates quietly, and accelerates on flats deceptively quickly… I'll be in for a rude awakening after returning to a road bike without IsoSpeed." - VeloNews

"The most notable transition from road to gravel was the sense of ease. Usually, when you roll from tarmac to stones, the bike can feel skittish and nervous (rider or bike). The Domane feels stable, and instead of holding your breath, you breathe out." - BikeRumor
